Welcome to the Nuggets Podcast with your host, David Sammel. Each week, we dive into enlightening discussions designed to provide you with valuable insights and food for thought on your personal and professional journey. Join us as we explore a range of topics, from overcoming adversity to unlocking the secrets of success, all aimed at empowering you to reach your full potential. In this episode, host David Samuel reflects on memories and experiences from his past growing up in South Africa, going to college in the U.S. on a tennis scholarship, and his long career as a tennis coach. He contemplates how some of his memories from pivotal times in his life now seem almost dreamlike, with factual details blurred and perhaps distorted by time and his own biases. David wonders if he truly remembers his past accurately or if some recollections have been "stitched together" over the years to fit a narrative he created. He notes how going back to visit his old universities recently felt surreal, as if those formative years were more like a dream than actual lived experience. The intensity of firsts, like college tennis matches, fraternity parties and first girlfriends, left stronger imprints. However, David recognizes his memories and perspectives likely differ from friends who were there too. Ultimately, David finds peace in knowing his rich life experience, however imperfectly recalled, is what led him to where he is now. He suggests trying not to get overly caught up in the intensity of the present moment, since everything is fleeting. The past lives on inside us through the emotions and learning it imprinted, which over time allows wisdom to take root. Join us as we explore a range of topics, from overcoming adversity to unlocking the secrets of success, all aimed at empowering you to reach your full potential. In this episode, David tackles the bombardment of self-help tools and advice we face today. He argues that trying to follow even a fraction of all this advice would consume our entire life, leaving no time for human relationships or self-understanding. David suggests that simple decisions like whether to drink coffee involve weighing compromises based on our priorities. He urges us not to blindly follow gurus but to be our own guru, periodically examining how to live life based on our evolving authentic self, not how it looks to others. Balancing priorities like work, family, and friends is impossible, David acknowledges, but nurturing more than one priority prevents us from becoming unbalanced. Making decisions amid so much pressure is difficult, but focusing on what feels right can help guide our path. | #140: Be authentic | 29 Jan 2024 | 00:07:28
Never believe what anyone says about you, good or bad. Do not believe the bad stuff and certainly do not believe the good stuff. Draw your own conclusions about yourself. Listen to your own counsel. Nobody knows you better than you”. – Steve Jobs Welcome to the Nuggets Podcast with your host, David Sammel. Each week, we dive into enlightening discussions designed to provide you with valuable insights and food for thought on your personal and professional journey. Join us as we explore a range of topics, from overcoming adversity to unlocking the secrets of success, all aimed at empowering you to reach your full potential. In this episode, host David emphasizes the importance of being your authentic self rather than just copying others. He explains that while we can learn from others, if we simply parrot what they're saying without interpreting it through our own lens, then there's no reason for anyone to listen to us over the original source. David cautions against thinking something is inherently wrong with you that the self-help industry can "fix." He asserts that no one can be the expert on how you should live your life - each person's path is unique based on different experiences. Using meditation as an example, David has accepted it's just not his personal practice even though it works for others. He's learned to embrace his own authentic practices that make him happy, like running, without any guilt. The key message is that how you choose to live and find happiness should be your own free choice without feelings of guilt or imposition from others' notions of the "right" way. | #139: How To Choose What To Integrate Into Your Life! | 22 Jan 2024 | 00:04:38
David loves to explore new ideas related to personal growth and productivity. His curiosity knows no bounds when it comes to listening to podcasts, taking online courses, attending workshops - you name it! However, David has learned that his appetite for consuming interesting information far exceeds his capacity to actually implement changes in his life. Our brains have limits in terms of adopting new behaviors, even when we're motivated. True lifestyle habits require time, commitment and repetition before they stick. This explains the failure of so many diets or exercise regimes that never get integrated. So David is careful not to jump on too many self-improvement bandwagons at once these days. He questions whether he's willing to put in 4-5 times the effort he estimates a new skill will require before adopting it. He thinks through the specific actions needed to make it a habit. If David's exploration leads to short-lived enthusiasm rather than mastery, he knows his reach has exceeded his grasp. At this point in life, David prefers going deep on just a few meaningful goals aligned with his values rather than broadly skimming the surface. He sometimes says no to intriguing ideas in favor of maintaining focus. David now knows practical knowledge is very different than consuming more information. The key is committing to lifestyle changes, not just learning theories. Don't miss this opportunity to learn the secrets of unwavering self-belief. | #138: How well and high does your ball bounce? | 15 Jan 2024 | 00:04:46
Liam Brody played extremely well in a recent tournament in Hong Kong, pushing the #5 ranked player in the world to the limit. He came into the Australian Open with great confidence and form after qualifying and making the second round in Hong Kong. However, during that tournament he developed a bone stress injury in his ankle. An MRI showed that if he played in the Australian Open, the injury could worsen or possibly lead to a fracture, which you definitely want to avoid. So the brave decision was made for Liam to withdraw from the Australian Open tournament, which was a major disappointment. David compares disappointments like this to a bouncing rubber ball - the speed and height of the first bounce back determines eventually how high you can rebound. In other words, how quickly you recover and bounce back from a letdown is key. The longer you wait before bouncing back, sinking into depression and disappointment, the harder it gets. If you wallow on the floor too long it's like starting from scratch all over again. You can't realistically stay at a peak high point forever in anything you pursue. Setbacks and disappointments are a normal part of any journey to success. Think of them as the ball bouncing off the ground - you just need to keep bouncing back. The best thing you can do is take action quickly after you face a disappointment, just like taking a tennis player straight back out on the court to practice after a tough loss. This will help you start feeling better and get excited about improving again faster. Keep the setbacks as short as possible by bouncing back immediately. Remember that disappointments are just part of the long journey to eventual success. Don't miss this opportunity to learn the secrets of unwavering self-belief. | #137: The Power of Words | 08 Jan 2024 | 00:05:46
In this thought-provoking episode, the host explores how deeply impactful language can be, for better or worse. He dispels the old adage "sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me," arguing that words do indeed have incredible power. Our internal monologues and beliefs about money, work, relationships and more often stem from childhood influences which imprinted unintentionally. The host advocates auditing our habitual language patterns and inherited assumptions to assess if they serve and empower us as adults. He uses money as an example, countering notions of scarcity by highlighting how banks continuously increase global monetary supply. He makes the case that money itself is neutral - it is merely an enabling token of exchange. However, he balances this by affirming the importance of working hard ethically. Additionally, the host cautions against generalizing isolated painful experiences across entire groups, or allowing them to dominate our worldviews long-term. He advocates continuous self-assessment to maintain balanced perspectives, rather than reactionary or cynical ones rooted in past hurts. In this way, we can shift from negative cognitive patterns towards more constructive, nuanced thought habits. Our outlooks become self-fulfilling prophecies, hence the immense power language has in filtering our realities. Don't miss this opportunity to learn the secrets of unwavering self-belief. | #130 Talk a problem don't think a problem | 13 Nov 2023 | 00:03:19
When a colleague and I got stuck with a problem, we would literally just talk about it, and we'd talk about it, and talk about it. I remember at one point saying to him, "It's kind of a waste of time just talking about it all the time. We should do something about it." He said, "No, no, let's just talk a bit more, because we don't really know what to do." The more we talked about a problem, suddenly we'd almost have that light bulb moment when we'd go, "Ah, now that's the next step."

| #129 Delegation | 06 Nov 2023 | 00:07:00 | |
On this week's episode of David Sammel's Nugget's - Delegation, Trust, and Anxiety When delegating tasks we often think that checking up on the people we delegate to is good management when often it is only to alleviate our own anxiety and lack of trust. True delegation is allowing others to do the job how they want and accepting the outcome before diving in to “save”! Stop feeling that you can do the job better and trust that another way may well be very different but that does not necessarily mean less good. Overseeing is not delegation it is micro-management. True delegation is freedom. | #128 Your Inner Peace - Part 2 | 30 Oct 2023 | 00:09:25
1. Life is a problem machine and humans love to solve problems. If we don’t have problems we invent them in the form of games. Therefore I’ve learned there is no difference between solving a massive problem to a small problem if your attitude is the same - happy to solve problems. 2. We never know enough to be sure of the outcome of our life, so really we never know enough to be pessimistic. 3. We don’t control what happens to us we can only control how we respond and I promise you the calmer and more accepting you are of a situation or problem the healthier your attitude to it will be Follow David on Social Media Mindset College Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/mindset_college/?hl=en Davis Sammel Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/david_sammel/?hl=en

| #127 Your Inner Peace - Part 1 | 23 Oct 2023 | 00:08:59 | |
For this week's episode, we discuss your "Inner Peace": 1.. It is not called inner peace for no reason. How you feel about yourself should never be outsourced- in other words know yourself and work out how you measure your effort, your success and how wish to live. 2. Think about it - how often are we fine and totally satisfied until someone says “Do you know how much so and so is earning?” Or “I Can’t you believe that you are happy with how they are treating you?” Anything that you were totally content with until someone stirs up discontent in you is saying you need to adopt their ideas of what is fair or unfair. 3. When you have lost or something hasn’t worked out I ask one question “If I had a magic genie what is the one thing I would have wanted from the genie to help me during that match, exam, job, deal etc?” Follow David on Social Media Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/david_sammel/?hl=en Mindset College - https://www.instagram.com/mindset_college/?hl=en

| #115 Do we pretend that things are important rather than admit they are distractions? | 30 Jul 2023 | 00:07:29 | |
Today's nugget is about the inconvenience of both listening to people who are close to us, because often they know us best but also because they are closest, they are often the hardest to listen to and easiest to dismiss and how dismissing them can make them feel like an inconvenience. As a tennis coach on tour my life is very busy with a huge amount of travel which can get very tiring. Additionally, through my choice I have a thriving private client business mentoring and coaching on mindset around the world, this podcast, my Locker Room Power group helping parents and coaches, newsletter and currently writing a new book called “Tennis Tough” for sports publishers Human Kinetics. WhatsApp and email are my two major ways of communicating and of course messages and emails come in non-stop, so it is easy to get caught up in the game of looking at every new WhatsApp message that comes in. I feel like I have email under control and will only check three to four times a day. But WhatsApp, because of clients' needs, often includes messages that require a quick response, especially from competing athletes, which makes it difficult to ignore for too long. However, most messages can wait and I'm still not good enough at letting these messages sit until there is an appropriate time to answer them. My wife Joy is very patient, but rightly so, she will periodically get annoyed when I get distracted if I'm alone with her or when we are with the grandkids.

| #114 Life is messy | 23 Jul 2023 | 00:06:40 | |
In today's episode, the nugget I'm going to talk about is the fact that life is messy. It's very easy when you look at social media, Instagram and listen to high performers, being interviewed, to think that they have it all together, and that their lives are so well organised, and that they're amazingly disciplined. The reality is everyone has their struggles and whilst there is an enormous amount of sophistication and slickness to high performers trust me when I say it is never as plain sailing or close to perfect as it seems.

| After French Open loss, what next for Liam Broady | 30 May 2023 | 00:15:55 | |
I discuss what happened at the French Open and what comes next. Bouncing back is how anyone succeeds because "moping" or feeling sorry for oneself never helps. It feels cosy in the short term but is devastating to a winning mindset.
