Over the course of the next five weeks, North Carolina will host at least eight high school basketball players from the class of 2025 on an official visit. It all starts this weekend (September 6) with Derek Dixon and Nik Khamenia. The other targets scheduled to visit over the next five weeks are Brayon Mullins, AJ Dybantsa, Eric Reibe, Isaiah Denis, Acaden Lewis, and Niko Bundalo. Will UNC be able to secure a commitment from any of these young men? It would be their first in the class of 2025. 

As has been well documented, Carolina didn’t release a depth chart ahead of the first game because Minnesota didn’t either. But now – we finally have the Tar Heel depth chart to play with and dissect. As expected, Conner Harrell sits atop the quarterback chart, ahead of Jacolby Criswell. Also, what’s going on with the ACC early? It’s a big opportunity for Carolina.

It’s Labor Day and that means it’s time to consider the question: Who’s doing work for UNC this season – both men’s basketball-wise and football-wise? For basketball, Drake Powell will need to do work in terms of bringing his varied capabilities to the team. Elliot Cadeau needs to do work with his leadership. Additionally, the frontcourt trio of Ven-Allen Lubin, Jae’lyn Withers, and Tyzhaun Claude need to do work to show that Carolina is physical. On the football field, first and foremost, Conner Harrell has to do work, now that the team is presumptively in his control. Additionally, the D-Line needs to do work, as do their counterparts in the secondary. Early returns on the defense are encouraging, but it will take more than just a week. The win over Minnesota helps set a winning tone throughout the season. It’s time for the Heels to build on that and figure out just exactly what they’ve got.

The North Carolina Tar Heels come into the 2024-25 college basketball season with strong certainty at both point guard and shooting guard – Elliot Cadeau and RJ Davis. But for the first time in the Hubert Davis era, there are big questions marks all over the rest of the starting lineup. Coach Davis could employ a multitude of trios to fill out his starting five. Is Jalen Washington the five? Will one of the freshmen, Ian Jackson or Drake Powell, slot in at the three? Will Cade Tyson’s floor-stretching ability earn him the start at the four?

The 2024 Maui Invitational bracket is set for what will be a great three days of basketball leading to Thanksgiving. North Carolina starts off with Dayton on ESPN2 on Monday, November 25 at 11:30pm ET. In the earlier games of the day Memphis will face two-time defending national champion UConn at 2:30pm ET, followed by Colorado vs. Michigan State (5pm ET), and the best game of round 1: Auburn vs. Iowa St (9pm ET). On Tuesday, November 26, UNC will either play Auburn or Iowa State. The game will either be at 8:30pm ET (loser’s bracket) or 11pm ET (winner’s bracket). Regardless of the three opponents Hubert Davis’ club will get three quality games in this tournament before heading home to host Alabama.

It’s week 8 of the 2024-25 UNC Basketball Summer Roster Preview Series. In the first three installments, we discussed the incoming freshmen: James Brown, Ian Jackson, and Drake Powell. We then moved to the two-man sophomore class of Zayden High and Elliot Cadeau. Next up was the junior transfers, Ven-Allen Lubin (Vanderbilt) and Cade Tyson (Belmont). This week we turn our attention to the first of two returning juniors, Jalen Washington. JWash projects to start at the five for Carolina – which means a massive jump in minutes and opportunity. A year after a devastating fire forced the Maui Invitational to move from Maui and the Lahaina Civic Center, the great Thanksgiving week MTE is back to its usual location and the Tar Heels are part of the eight-team field along with Auburn, Colorado, Dayton, Iowa State, Memphis, Michigan State & UConn. We learned on Monday from Jon Rothstein’s reporting that the Tar Heels will play Dayton in the first round. While the full bracket hasn’t been released, it appears that the Tar Heels will either play Iowa State or Auburn in the second game. 

Jasper Johnson, one of Carolina’s guard targets in the class of 2025, is set to make his college decision next week, seemingly choosing between the Tar Heels, Alabama, and Kentucky.

Class of 2025 F Nik Khamenia is down to a final five schools that he’s considering to play for in college. The Californian has Arizona, UCLA, Gonzaga, UNC, and Duke as part of his final quintet. While the Tar Heels and Blue Devils are clear on the other side of the country, we all know better than to count out either university. North Carolina has landed in the final list for multiple recruits, can they finally seal the deal with one of them?

Georgia Tech transfer Tyzhaun Claude committed to North Carolina on Wednesday for the 2024-25 season. Claude has one year of eligibility remaining after receiving a waiver from the NCAA last week. He is the 12th scholarship player for the Tar Heels for this season and the third transfer, joining Belmont’s Cade Tyson and Vanderbilt’s Ven-Allen Lubin. How will Hubert Davis and staff utilize Claude? Will he be part of the rotation? Or get limited “mop-up” minutes similar to James Okonkwo last season?

Class of 2025 targets AJ Dybantsa and Eric Reibe have scheduled Official Visits to multiple schools, including UNC. In fact they will visit the same weekend (September 20-22). 

UNC Football is unranked in the preseason and has work to do to prove to voters that they are more than just Drake Maye.
