| Yes, the Lakers are Watching the Standings, and Why the Offense Can Still Improve | 02 Apr 2025 | 00:31:42 | |
At this time of year, you'll often hear players talk about how they don't pay attention to what's happening around them in the standings. We just focus on ourselves. We keep it tight, inside the building. We're controlling what we control. And, yeah, sure. Control what you control. That's always sound strategy. But the idea these guys don't pay attention to the standings? To how teams around them are doing? It is, and has always been, a crock of... well, you get it. The Lakers aren't playing that game. Following Monday's win against Houston, everyone in the locker room asked about the Western Conference standings made it very clear that they know what's going on. Why? Because it would be insane not to. The West is insanely competitive, and every possible advantage matters when it comes to maximizing the team's potential. Along those lines, the Lakers are still seeking the type of consistent performance you'd expect (at least on the surface) from an offense featuring Luka, LeBron and Austin Reaves. We're starting to get clues as to how that might change, thanks to LeBron's newly re-launched podcast, of all things. Talking to new host Steve Nash (former Laker!), the Hall of Fame point guard marveled at the acceptance of roles since Luka arrived, and the possibilities available to Lakers with LeBron starting so many possessions away from the ball. LeBron, Nash said, is screening. Running the short roll. Spacing. Cutting. All the stuff guys can do when they don't have the ball in their hands. Some examples of how LeBron responded:
When the Lakers acquired Luka, more than a few voices who figured it wouldn't/couldn't work because LeBron and Luka wouldn't be work together. It would just be "your turn, my turn" because neither guy would take a step back. Of course, they were really talking about LeBron, essentially saying his ego wouldn't let him cede control of LA's offense to its new superstar. None of it made sense. He's been looking for someone to help carry this burden for a few seasons. It's part of why the Lakers traded for Russell Westbrook. (Just because it should have been really obvious that wasn't going to work doesn't mean the purpose was to make things easier for James.) This season, LeBron had already given up some responsibility to Reaves. If he was willing to do it for AR, why on earth wouldn't he make concessions for Luka Freaking Dončić? The path hasn't been smooth, and there will continue to be bumps along the way. But the ups and downs are because NBA basketball is really hard. Some nights things won't work the way you want. But broadly speaking, the Lakers are all pulling in the same direction, and more than that, LeBron seems to really enjoy this new style. He's not always drawing the best defender. He gets to attack closeouts, or cut because defenses aren't watching him. This is all stuff that has almost never happened over the course of his 22 years in the league. And because there's no power struggle, the Lakers are more likely to hit this season's ceiling... which still has the potential to be very, very high.

| The Lakers Get a KEY VICTORY Over Houston, Behind... Dorian Finney-Smith and Gabe Vincent?!?!?! | 01 Apr 2025 | 00:34:45 | |
The Lakers showed a lot Monday night in their 104-98, even while the game was, to say the least, not a ton of fun to look at. Two teams, both playing extremely hard, both playing solid defense. But everyone knows at this point that, good as they are, the Rockets really can't score at an elite level. The Lakers, however, have Luka! They've got LeBron! Austin Reaves has been insanely good over the last 15 games! Points is their thing, right? Regular watchers of the team know that while that sort of potential is there, the Lakers haven't figured out how to make it happen every night. So Monday, they got into a game that was probably as close to ideal as Houston coach Ime Odoka could get. Dončić, James and Reaves combined for 48 points on 39 shots. Not exactly high end efficiency. But all three of them made critical defensive plays, and Luka's nine dimes helped provide a lot of the grease lubricating LA's offense. And the rest was provided through huge games from Dorian Finney-Smith (20 points, 6-11 from 3-point range) and Gabe Vincent (20 points, 6-13 from 3). Both of those guys shot a ton (for them) and shot the lights out because the Rockets stuck to a plan of forcing anyone but the stars to beat them. And they did! For teams to advance in the playoffs, they need to be able to win in a variety of ways. One dimensional squads, even when really good, can only hide for so long in the postseason because at some point, the matchups won't be in their favor, or a clever opposing coach will find a way to mitigate that one (really good!) dimension. Monday, the Lakers beat Houston playing Houston's style of basketball. They've won other games by running effectively, and plenty by defending well beyond what people expected. The Big Three didn't force the issue, they instead put faith in open players to make shots, and eventually it began to happen. The Lakers are still working to find their ceiling. They might not have enough time to get there. But they continue to uncover capabilities that will make them a harder out in the spring.

| Lakers vs. Rockets: Will Luka Dončić's Dominance of Houston Continue With the Lakers? | 31 Mar 2025 | 00:36:20 | |
It wasn't long ago the Lakers had reached the 2nd spot in the Western Conference playoff race (by percentage points, but still second). Having fallen off that pace, if they have any hope of getting there again, the Lakers absolutely must beat the visiting Houston Rockets on Monday night, and then do it again on April 11 when Houston returns to town. The Lakers are yet to play the Rockets in the Luka Dončić Is a Laker Era, but certainly hope his career success against the Rockets carries over. Luka has averaged over 31 points and 10 rebounds in 18 career games against Houston, with nearly eight assists per night, as well. In three games last season, he lit them up for 41/10/9.3. Certainly the Lakers would happily accept that level of production. (Hopefully he has a grudge against someone in that organization.) But for LA, while the prospect of moving back up the playoff ladder is exciting, the big priorities remain first, stay out of the play in, and then try to earn home court for the first round. For the former, the enter Monday's game with a 2.5 game cushion over 7th place Minnesota, and with the latter, a one game lead (two, functionally, given the tiebreaker) on Memphis. Given the remaining schedule—the Lakers play Golden State on Thursday, have two games on the road against an OKC team still playing hard despite wrapping up the top seed in the conference, a Dallas squad getting healthier and the aforementioned second game against Houston. Even sprinkling in New Orleans and Portland in the regular season finale, there's just not much fluff in that slate. With that in mind, the excitement around tonight's game is about the clash of two teams that (for very different reasons) are sitting in a seed that wasn't expected earlier in the year. Plenty of people wonder if the Lakers and Rockets (especially the Rockets) really are true contenders this season, or if the records might be a mirage. It's exciting because it's the first look at how the new-look Lakers match up against Houston. But it's meaningful first and foremost because a win would give the Lakers that much more breathing room to absorb a loss or two down the stretch.

| Lakers Get CRITICAL WIN Over Grizzlies, Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves Combine for 60 Points | 30 Mar 2025 | 00:22:35 | |
The Lakers needed a win on Sunday in Memphis, and they got it. 134-127 over the Grizzlies, giving LA a key tiebreaker in the Western Conference playoff race, and keeping them in fourth place (in position to host a first round matchup). The big three were huge, with Luka Dončić, LeBron James and Austin Reaves combining for 85 points and 25 assists, as the Lakers moved the ball very well as a team and generated a lot of high quality shots. Reaves in particular made a ton of critical plays, many based on raw hustle. His 31 points led the team, and big picture continues to raise the level of his play. Given how many games the Lakers have played over the last month, and how motivated the Grizzlies were after the organization fired Taylor Jenkins Friday, this was a very impressive win.

| CATASTROPHE! Lakers, LeBron Stumble In Closing Seconds, Lose 119-117 to Bulls. | 28 Mar 2025 | 00:34:50 | |
The Lakers have lost games this season that they should have won. Every team does over the course of an 82-game season. They all count. So technically speaking, Thursday's 119-117 loss to the Bulls in Chicago is just one game on the calendar, like all the others. Except this late in the year, when there are so few games remaining, the impact of these terrible losses is far higher. So given that they were up by double digits with under five minutes to play, up by five with 12 seconds to play, and up by one with three seconds remaining... yeah, this one's gonna bruise. Especially when LeBron James, who is as smart a player the game has ever seen, was part of two plays that helped turn a win into a loss. First, on an inbounds pass with 12.6 seconds remaining, James got caught in no man's land, rotating too high towards Bulls center Nikola Vucevic, who swung the ball to Pat Williams in the corner. LeBron couldn't close fast enough, and Williams buried the triple. Then, with a timeout available, LeBron dropped a horrible inbound pass in the direction of Austin Reaves that was easily picked off by Bulls guard Josh Giddey, who kicked it to Coby White for another three. Five point lead? Try one point deficit. You could watch LeBron play 100 more games before seeing a play that bad. And then James, like everyone else on the Lakers, let Giddey move unobstructed up the floor for his buzzer beating heave from halfcourt. LeBron wasn't the only culprit, to be sure. Luka Dončić got off to a terrible start, got hot in the second half, but took a few questionable shots down the stretch. LA also caught some bad luck, as Chicago went nuclear in the fourth quarter, hitting 11-14 3-point attempts. That, as JJ Redick noted after the game, would be considered good work even in an empty gym. And it still took a 47-footer for the Bulls to win. But that's kind of the point. The Lakers did so much good stuff to overcome a slow start and put what seemed like a stranglehold on the game. But a little organic bad luck combined with a lot of the type the Lakers created for themselves means they lost out on an opportunity to stick closer to the Nuggets for the 3-seed, and missed a chance to move ahead of Memphis and give themselves a better grip on the fourth spot. It's fair to wonder how they'll react heading into a critical game Saturday against the Grizzlies. Redick said they don't have time to feel sorry for themselves, and the staff won't let them, anyway. So while it's easy to wonder about the emotional impact and any potential for carryover into the weekend, the more immediate hit is practical. This hurts the Lakers in the standings. It almost certainly eliminates a shot at the 2-seed, even with two games remaining against Houston, unless the Rockets totally collapse. It hurts their efforts to keep home court in the first round, and it keeps the threat of dropping to 7th and the play-in tournament alive. In short, it's bad, and the way it happened, with so many moments where it seemed the Lakers would walk away with a win, literally until the end? Certainly makes it feel worse.

| LAKERS POSTCAST Josh Giddey is too much for the Lakers | 28 Mar 2025 | 00:18:22 | |
Josh Giddey’s half court three-pointer at the buzzer erased a 16-point Lakers lead to hand Los Angeles a 119-117 loss. Austin Reaves led the Lakers in the defeat with 30 points and Luka Doncic added 25 points, 10 rebounds, and 7 assists; it wasn’t enough as the Lakers have lost two of their first three games on this 4-game road trip. The Bulls were led by Josh Giddey’s triple-double, who had 25 points, 14 rebounds, and 11 assists.

| Lakers Convert Jordan Goodwin's Two-Way Contract, Waive Cam Reddish | 27 Mar 2025 | 00:08:24 | |
In what should come as no surprise to anybody, Jordan Goodwin's two-way contract was converted by the Lakers as soon it his days were up, allowing him to remain on the roster for the remainder of the season and, most importantly, the playoffs. Cam Reddish was also, unsurprisingly, waived to create the roster space for Goodwin. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. | Luka Dončić Drops 34, LeBron James Hits Buzzer Beater, Lakers Win 120-119 | 27 Mar 2025 | 00:33:45 | |
They figured it out. After looking like they couldn't lose, the Lakers looked like they couldn't win. But in the end, they found a way, staging a fourth quarter comeback to beat the Indiana Pacers on the road, 120-119. Luka Donćić led the way among scorers with 34. Austin Reaves was on fire in the second quarter, and finished with 24 points. LeBron James entered the fourth quarter with three (3) points. Not a typo. He went on a personal run to quickly get up to 11, but saved his best for last. As a potential Luka game-winner trickled off the front of the rim with barely a second to play, LeBron was there to tip it in and beat the buzzer. In the end, it's a huge win for a Lakers team that had to have it. They worked hard—JJ Redick noted that going in, the staff said this would be a game won on multiple effort plays, which turned out to be true. They weathered a lot of storm, and beat back the nervous vibes that can creep in with a team that's not in a great spot. And while the offense periodically lost its way, down the stretch when the Lakers needed points, they generated them consistently, and generally converted. Especially Rui Hachimura, who had a pair of massive triples down the stretch, despite barely having touched the ball to that point. That level of execution (including some adjustments in how they got into the offense) was great to see It looks a lot different than it might had the Lakers lost by a point instead of winning by one, no question. But the way the Lakers were able to celebrate as a team while they waited for the official ruling of a made basket that was very obviously coming, it felt like a major weight being lifted. It's risky to say one game snaps them out of the funk they've been in over the last couple of games, but it's certainly possible for a win like this to change the vibes in important ways. We'll find out fast, because the Lakers are back in action Thursday in Chicago.

| Can Adversity Ultimately Help the Lakers? Maybe! Plus, Reaves Off the Bench? | 26 Mar 2025 | 00:32:53 | |
Following Monday's disappointing loss in Orlando, Dorian Finney-Smith made a very solid point about the Lakers, where they are now, and where they want to go. Ultimately, he says, adversity helps a team with championship aspirations. You have to go through it (to use JJ Redick's phrasing) in order to truly see the flaws and fix them. Coming through adversity is the hard thing. Great teams must be able to do hard things. So while professional athletes have a remarkable capacity to believe that whatever situation they're in is the one that they need at that moment, DFS is speaking truth, here. (And, side note, it reinforces why the guy is so universally popular with every teammate and coach he's ever had.) Obviously players need to be accountable, and on that front Luka Dončić took some responsibility for the second half drop in communication Monday, noting he has to do better. He and LeBron, Luka said, have to set the tone and the example for the group. That's a great start, but the list of things the Lakers need to get right extends past the players. Yes, they need to pull their weight, but the team is also being schemed against in different ways—fewer double teams against Luka, for example, which has caused the team to get stagnant as possessions get iso heavyand have to make the appropriate adjustments. That, to be sure, puts a burden on the coaching staff to counter the counters. So everyone from the stars to the role guys to the coaching staff has work to do in order to get this thing aligned. If they can't, the playoff run won't be nearly as fun or as long as fans have come to hope. But the good news? Lets say the Lakers can find a way to create better space and movement while everyone is being single covered. Let's say they start generating that same volume of high quality shots and assisted baskets as during the best runs of the season. Now they're even more dangerous, because it's one less tool in the opposing coach's tool box. The Lakers don't have a ton of time to figure it out, and no matter what happens, the summer will provide an opportunity to fill some holes the roster obviously has. But there's enough time, and the Lakers are led by a couple of basketball supercomputers in Dončić and James. So ultimately, there are still more reasons to be excited than despair.

| Luka Stays Cold, Lakers Punished on the Glass, Lose to Golden State, 123-116 | 04 Apr 2025 | 00:35:40 | |
The Lakers had a big opportunity Thursday to put themselves in prime position for (at worst) a 3rd seed in the Western Conference with a win over the visiting Golden State Warriors. Lose, and things would get a lot more interesting. Well, things are a lot more interesting. Golden State punished the Lakers on the glass, racking up second chance points to fuel a 123-116 win over the purple and gold. As a result, the Lakers are now packed into a group of six teams separated by 2.5 games, ranging from the 3rd to the 8th seed. Given their tough closing schedule (two games in OKC, one in Dallas, one vs. Houston) it's reasonable to be nervous. One thing that would help the Lakers finish strong? Luka Dončić needs to break out of his shooting slump, and fast. Luka finished without a triple in Thursday's loss (0-6). Over his last three games, Luka is 3-22 from 3-point range. Overall, he's 22-56, inefficiency that's putting a drag on the offense, both because of the empty possessions, and because there are definitely trips where Luka is (understandably) trying to get him self untracked. It's no secret that the Lakers, for a variety of reasons, haven't been able to get the best Dončić has to offer. Over his last 10 games, Luka has two where he's been over 50% from the floor. In five, he's been under 40%. He's also produced over eight rebounds and eight assists over that stretch, so it's not like Luka's just failing left and right. But at a time when you hope to see the team rounding into form, a significant part of Luka's game is still offline. It's easy enough to speculate as to why (he's banged up) but regardless, the fully realized version of the Lakers includes a fully realized Dončić, and also includes the Lakers staying out of the play-in... an effort that would certainly benefit from Luka playing better. He said after the game Thursday that his performance was unacceptable, so it's not like Luka isn't aware, or is playing it casual. It would have been helpful to beat the Warriors for a variety of reasons, but one of the sneaky ones is it would've given the Lakers a little more wiggle room to rest guys (Luka included) Friday against the Pelicans. Instead, everyone who can play likely will. At least a run against a bad New Orleans team gives Luka a chance to find a groove.

| Austin Reaves for MOST IMPROVED PLAYER? Plus, Lakers Vs. Warriors... Huge Game! | 03 Apr 2025 | 00:35:34 | |
Wednesday in El Segundo, JJ Redick was given a chance to hype up Austin Reaves for this year's NBA Most Improved Player award. In his weird way, he advocated for Reaves by saying essentially that he can't/won't win because people just don't know what that award is supposed to be. By rejecting the plausibility of the premise, his implication was strong that Reaves is deserving. And is he a more worthy candidate than Cade Cunningham or Dyson Daniels (to name the two guys leading the betting odds for MIP)? Dunno. Those guys have had great seasons. But whether or not Reaves actually wins (which he very likely won't) is secondary to the viability of his candidacy. He deserves it, much more than some guys who find themselves in the running for MIP because they've finally gotten a chance to play, or went from crappy to pretty good! in ways that were unexpected. What Reaves has done this year is really, really hard. It's hard to go from solid player to All Star adjacent. It's really hard to make the transition from role player to franchise pillar. One of the guys who is expected to put up high quality numbers (and add quality leadership) on a night in, night out basis. The Lakers have a Big Three model. And even if Luka Dončić and LeBron James are tiers above Reaves overall, Reaves is still the third most important Laker, and it's really not close. The fact it's no longer debatable is a big reason the Lakers are winning as much as they are. (Last year, AR was third in name, but not in consistency. It wasn't always easy to definitively identify the team's third best player.) ' Now, he's a tremendous weapon, slotted into a great role in which to continue nurturing that growth. While Reaves has shown the ability to be the main man in games where LA's other stars have been missing, most of his floor time now is with either James, Luka or both. He can move and attack knowing the team's best defender isn't likely to be on him. He's empowered to use his creativity as a ball handler, passer and scorer, and when things are going well gets to do all three from positions of advantage. Does this make him an MIP? To the Lakers, surely, and their vote matters most, even if it doesn't come with at trophy.

| Ejection of Luka Dončić Ruins Great Game, Lakers lose to Thunder in OKC | 09 Apr 2025 | 00:33:14 | |
With 7:40 left in the fourth quarter, Luka Dončić made a basket and talked trash to a courtside fan. Referee JT Orr, presumably, thought he was yelling at him (or, perhaps, that this sort of exchange is off limits), and T'd Luka up. Dončić, who had been hit with at tech earlier in the game, was done. At that point, OKC went on an extended run and ended up winning 136-120. Had the officials not intervened so actively in the game, would the Lakers have won? We'll never know... and that's the point! It's not a matter of the game being stolen—thought certainly an opportunity was taken from the Lakers—but another example of officials refusing to avoid making themselves the story. The Lakers lost the game, and it was an important one. But basketball fans lost as well, which sucks, too. The Lakers still need two wins in the final three games to lock down the 3-seed out West.

| Luka Dončić Scores 45 Points in his Return to Dallas, Lakers Win, Clinch Top 6 Seed | 10 Apr 2025 | 00:35:28 | |
That was impressive. In a highly emotional return to Dallas on Wednesday, Luka Dončić came out hot, scoring 14 first quarter points, 31 by halftime and finishing with 45, to go along with eight rebounds, six assists and four steals. Particularly impressive (especially to his teammates and coach) was how Luka was able to put on that type of performance after absorbing huge ovation from the crowd and an incredibly well done tribute video during pregame introductions. For the Lakers, 112-97 win, which featured a great fourth quarter push to regain control of the game and put it out of reach, has huge implications. They're now one win away from clinching the 3rd seed in the West, guaranteeing they'll host at least one playoff round, and at the least, they will finish in the top 6, meaning while teams are competing in the Play-In tournament, the Lakers will be resting. Just a remarkable night for the Luka, for the Lakers and their potential for a deep playoff run.

| Jazz Expected to Listen to Offers for Walker Kessler. Could the Lakers Make a deal? | 10 Jun 2025 | 00:34:13 | |
The Lakers badly need a center. Everyone knows it. Walker Kessler is a very good young pivot who rebounds, can catch a lob and has fantastic defensive metrics. He's the kind of player a team could build around. Buuuuuuuuut, reports out of Utah say they're listening to everything this offseason. Some guys (Jordan Clarkson, Collin Sexton, John Collins) might be available, but someone like Kessler? For the right deal, they'd listen. Of course, the "right" deal in this context would mean the proverbial Godfather offer. Something Utah can't refuse. Can the Lakers even assemble a deal like that, whether for Kessler or anyone else? It's the bind LA is in. The best they could do would be Austin Reaves, Dalton Knecht, Rui Hachimura a pick and some swaps. That's obviously more than you'd want to give up for Kessler, but the question becomes relevant when trying to figure out how the Lakers compete with other teams putting together their best offer. The Lakers and Utah would be interesting trade partners, and if they're trying to get better (as the Lakers are) Reaves could be a fit. But then again, if they're trying to win, why would Utah trade Kessler? And if they're not trying to win and decide to continue stockpiling assets, then Reaves feels less logical, given that he's already 27 and about to get paid. LA's biggest trade chip is Reaves, but he might not have a universal market. It's tricky! So if the Lakers can't get Kessler, and they likely can't, there's a good chance they have to settle for a player that doesn't tick all the boxes. If that's the case, which boxes are most important?

| Will the Lakers have to Pay Extra in Trade as "Punishment" for getting Luka? | 09 Jun 2025 | 00:32:23 | |
The Lakers have some work to do this summer to improve the team enough to realistically compete for a title, but multiple reports indicate that might not be so easy. Why? Not just because the price for certain players (namely centers) might be steep, but because the rest of the league might be in the mood to punish them for being gifted Luka Dončić at the trade deadline. The Athletic's Jovan Buha (among others) reports that the "Lakers Tax" might be in play this offseason, as teams are at the very least sensitive to the idea of making a team that was just gifted Luka Doncic better. So if the Lakers want Daniel Gafford, the Mavs might insist not just on Dalton Knecht, but also a first rounder (and balancing salary). That's a lot for a guy who has never been able to establish himself as a starting center in the NBA. Plus, the Lakers are going to have to pay him next offseason. Do they like him that much? Broadly, how much can/should the Lakers overpay for a center, if at all? Are they in position to overpay at all? Meanwhile, Giannis is reportedly staying in Milwaukee. How does that impact the Lakers? Plus, we open the mailbag to talk LeBron.

| Skinny Luka? Dončić Looking Good in Photos. Plus, Austin Reaves' Agent Weighs in on Rumors | 27 May 2025 | 00:30:13 | |
Last week, early reports of Luka Dončić dedicating himself more seriously to fitness were giving Lakers fans some encouragement. This weekend, things looked even better. In the form of pictures! From Luka's Insta page, and from pictures taken of him in the crowd at Real Madrid and even food pics from his wife's social media. We saw a thinner looking player, and what appeared to be a healthy, delicious meal! So only a few weeks after the season ended, at the very least, Dončić -- who is not stupid and knows full well that pictures of him will be dissected to no end -- appears to have put himself on a solid path to begin a critical offseason. ONe that doesn't just matter for the Lakers this year, but as as a sign of what might be to come. Because remember, Nico Harrison bet that Luka was a bad long-term gamble for the Mavs. And as much as Harrison's logic (or his skill executing trades) might come into question, it's certainly true that long term, Luka needs to take better care of himself. All athletes do as they start to get older. Meanwhile, Austin Reaves's agent is setting expectations for this season, and he's setting them high. Meanwhile, there's a number out there for what Reaves might look for assuming he hits free agency after next season. Is it a good one for the Lakers?

| Is Luka Dončić Already Focused More on Conditioning? Plus, Lessons for the Lakers. | 23 May 2025 | 00:31:23 | |
There is virtually no limit to the level of scrutiny Luka Dončić is set to receive this summer around his fitness. So when anyone says anything on the subject that provides some potential insight, it'll get attention. That's the case with Jason Gallagher, a producer of JJ Redick's "Old Man and the Three" Podcast, as well as the "Mind the Game" pod hosted (formerly) by Redick and then and now by LeBron James, appeared on a Dallas sports pod, "The Dumb Zone." “I’ve heard from folks that are pretty honest about the conditioning stuff or whatever that Luka has already like begun to clean slate, like starting anew. He’s already like in this mindset of changing a lot about himself. Now, I’ve heard it before, but not from specific people that have been critical of him," Gallagher said. Obviously that doesn't relay concrete plans or things he's been doing, but if what Gallagher is being told is true, it is an indication that Luka at the very least gets the criticism and understands he can, and needs, to do better in this area than he has over the course of his career. It's critical for his rep, and obviously for the Lakers. Redick ended the season talking about the need for the Lakers to have championship level fitness, and certainly didn't exclude Luka from that, or imply that he's met the bar. Meanwhile, what can the Lakers learn from teams still in the playoffs?

| LeBron Finishes 6th In MVP Voting! Plus, the Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Foul Debate. | 22 May 2025 | 00:34:45 | |
LeBron James is now the oldest player in NBA history to garner MVP votes. Wednesday, when the league announced the results, not surprisingly Shai Gilgeous-Alexander walked away with his first trophy, with Nikola Jokic the runner up. But down there in sixth was LeBron James. His first MVP votes came as a 19-year old with the Cavs in his rookie season. And now, he's finished 6th. Pretty remarkable, and well-deserved after a season where he averaged over 24 points, and almost eight assists and rebounds per game. So what does this mean going forward? LeBron has now played 141 games over the last two seasons, putting at least some of the durability and health questions to bed... except he's going to turn 41 this year so really, do those questions ever go away? Is it reasonable to expect more of the same from LBJ, especially knowing the team will be built around Luka Dončić, who will be assigned most of the heavy lifting offensively? Plus, the debate about Shai and foul-hunting consumed NBA social media after the Thunder beat Minnesota in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals. Is "the discourse" on to something? Or does everyone need to get offline a little more?

| Does Dalton Knecht Have More Value to the Lakers or as a Trade Piece? | 21 May 2025 | 00:35:28 | |
The NBA announced its All Rookie squads, and (not surprisingly) Dalton Knecht wasn't among the 10 honored first year players. To his credit, Knecht was relatively close, finishing in a tie for 13th in vote total. It's a fair result for a guy who had a lot of highs and lows over the course of the season. His strong suits were clear (shooting, offense, athleticism) and his weaknesses (defense) equally so. Now the Lakers, who have already shown a willingness to trade him, have to make a decision this offseason. Is the guy more valuable to them? Or as a lure to fill holes around the roster? The goal for LA is to build a team that works for Luka Dončić. Knecht fits that profile. He can shoot, he can get to the rim, he can finish above it. On the other hand, he's one of about 2.5 human beings on the roster who have genuine value as players (as opposed to an expiring contract) in a trade (the others being Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura). So Rob Pelinka, just as he does with Reaves, is going to be confronted with some tough choices about Knecht, too. Plus... could LeBron actually leave? There's one at least semi-plausible scenario.

| Is a "Foundational Piece" the Only Option for Lakers in an Austin Reaves Trade? | 20 May 2025 | 00:34:02 | |
There was a lot of feedback to Monday's show running down the league's (mostly) starting centers and judging whether they qualify as a "foundational piece," i.e. the level of player the Lakers reportedly would have to receive in order to send out Austin Reaves in a trade. In the process, we saw a variety of opinions on:
And obviously, for the highest level players on the list of guys we decided were even theoretically possible, it might cost Reaves plus more. Maybe Dalton Knecht, maybe draft capital, maybe both. But what about going the other way? Brooklyn's Nic Claxton is broadly believed to be gettable without sacrificing Reaves. But what about Claxton and someone like Cam Johnson, who could fill some needs for LA? Would that (type of deal, playing for depth) be worth AR? Plus... lots of former Lakers are playing big roles for conference finalists. Is it generating any nostalgia for Lakers fans?

| What Centers are Good Enough to Make it Worth Trading Austin Reaves? | 19 May 2025 | 00:34:33 | |
The Lakers, it is reported, would trade Austin Reaves for a "foundational piece." That doesn't have to be a center, necessarily, but certainly the five is LA's biggest need, and as LA's best trade chip, people are going to at least make those connections. But practically speaking, who exactly would that mean? Like, sure, the Lakers would trade Austin for Nikola Jokic or Wemby... but that's not a world we live in. So what names out there are even remotely possible? And of the guys that are even more possible, would any of them actually be worth sacrificing Reaves? It's a tricky place, for sure. Because the list of names worthy of Reaves isn't long, and the list of gettable centers includes many where Reaves would be too high a price to pay. It's a tough needle for Rob Pelinka to thread. Meanwhile, the league may get some clarity on the Giannis situation, as he and the Bucks are expected to meet this week to talk about his future in Milwaukee. A resolution to this doesn't mean he's coming to the Lakers - he's not - but would help keep offseason movement robust, which does favor the Lakers. If everyone is waiting around to figure out Giannis's future, that hurts LA. The Lakers need action.

| The Lakers Have Good (and Bad) Reasons to Not Trade Austin Reaves. Plus, Jakob Poeltl a Center Target? | 16 May 2025 | 00:33:42 | |
The Austin Reaves Conversation is definitely a real thing. In his Thursday newsletter, Dan Woike of the LA Times relays how the Lakers are looking at things. First things first, Reaves is not untouchable. But to move him, the Lakers (quite rightly) will want a foundational piece in return, not some rental or a transitional player. Reaves is a very good player, and they'd need a very good player in return. That's how it should be. On the other hand, the Lakers are also (and this isn't new) very attached to Reaves, in part because they value his story. He's one of their guys, signed, developed in the G-League, and now good enough to be in that class of fringe, near All-Star caliber players. They like the win for themselves, and they recognize the popularity of Reaves with the fan base. Those are not good reasons to keep him. Reaves is a feather in the front office's cap no matter what happens, and fans want a winning roster. If they make a good trade that includes Reaves, the fans will be on board. One name that popped up this week as potentially available at a position of need? Jakob Poeltl, Toronto's starting center, coming off his best season as a pro. Is he on the same level as a guy like Reaves? Does he tick enough boxes for the Lakers to use their limited capital to make a run at him?

| What Assets Do the Lakers Have To Build Around Luka Dončić This Summer? | 15 May 2025 | 00:33:46 | |
The assignment for Rob Pelinka is clear: Build a winning roster around Luka Dončić. In the short term, that (likely) includes LeBron James. In the long run, it won't. Is Austin Reaves part of the equation? It seems like it, but is that set in stone? The Lakers have a lot of needs—center, rebounding and wing depth at the top of the list—without a lot of assets to make it happen. Pelinka has some expiring contracts (Rui Hachimura, Gabe Vincent most notably), some potentially appealing players (Hachimura, Dalton Knecht) and a few draft assets (a first rounder in '31 or '32, a second rounder, a handful of pick swaps). That's not much. Hopefully there's a lot of activity, which could help the Lakers pick off prized targets with less competition, but without question, Pelinka is going to have to choose carefully and make sure every player he acquires is a good fit around Luka.

| Tatum's Injury Shakes Up the NBA Offseason, Plus LeBron's Place as an All-Time Laker | 14 May 2025 | 00:36:16 | |
Lakers fans love wallowing in the misery of the Celtics, but even Lakers fans don't wish for this sort of thing. Monday in Game 4 against the Knicks, Boston star Jayson Tatum went down with a ruptured Achilles. He'll miss much of/most of/all of next season (the exact recovery is TBD, but even with modern surgery and treatment, it's a months-long recovery). So now Boston, a team that would have had major decisions to make even if they'd managed to repeat as champions, are looking at a potential down year without its star. So do you add the C's to the list of teams that could be active? On top of what Dallas does to reform its Cooper Flagg-having squad, or San Antonio leveraging it's gift of a 2nd pick to try and get Giannis? Will another Eastern Conference team smell opportunity and get super aggressive to try and try to take advantage of some weakness among traditional powers? All of this can impact the Lakers, who have some major improvements to make and could very well benefit from a very active summer around the league. More trades and more movement mean more opportunities for Rob Pelinka to do what's required. Meanwhile, we open the mailbag to answer a couple LeBron related questions. Could LeBron leave the Lakers to sign a low money deal with Cleveland or Golden State? And whether this summer or a couple summers from now, when LeBron finally walks away from the Lakers, how will he rank among Lakers greats? It's a different question than where he fits in among all time NBA greats.

| Chris Paul to LA, Again? Plus, NBA Finals Game 1 Highlighted Lakers Weaknesses | 06 Jun 2025 | 00:33:38 | |
Many tried to sell this NBA Finals between Oklahoma City and Indiana as a clunker. Two small market teams without the league's biggest stars (even though it does have, you know, it's MVP). Well, Game 1 showed how much potential for sheer entertainment this series contains. A jumper from Tyrese Haliburton won the game for the Pacers with .3 seconds left on the clock. Indiana's depth was on display, something the Lakers could certainly use. Moreover, Indiana's consistent ability (driven by Haliburton) to execute late in games has been a presence throughout the postseason. That is an area in which the Lakers have fallen short every series after reaching the Western Conference Finals a couple seasons ago. Twice against Denver, this year against Minnesota. Leads or close games in crunch time that they can't hold on to. And finally, Chris Paul reportedly wants to finish his career in Los Angeles, which means he has two choices. Lakers or Clippers. He's been on both teams (though not for very long as a Laker, and could certainly help the roster overall. But he's also over 40, can't defend like he used to doesn't score a ton anymore. He does pass the ball incredibly well, still. He orchestrates well. He's a pretty good 3-point shooter. So if the rumor is true, should the Lakers pull the trigger?

| How the NBA Draft Lottery Impacts the Lakers: Mavs Gets #1 Pick, Spurs #2 | 13 May 2025 | 00:36:19 | |
The Lakers weren't part of Monday's NBA Draft Lottery, but they were definitely impacted by it. An already challenging Western Conference is set to get even harder, with the Dallas Mavericks overcoming incredibly long odds (1.8%) to win the top pick in this year's draft, otherwise known as the Cooper Flagg Sweepstakes. This is a remarkable turn of events for a team far better equipped to compete and win than your typical lottery squad. And then the San Antonio Spurs, already on the rise with Victor Wembanyama and a host of draft capital, jumped six spots to #2, giving themselves yet another asset either to use or to trade. Perhaps as part of a Giannis deal? All of this is to say, the West just got even better. And it was already great. So the pressure for the Lakers to fill the cracks in the roster has increased. The landscape of the summer could be changed, completely. Are teams active, if it really does look like Giannis is ready to go? Or does action shut down and potentially limit how the Lakers can do business? What about Daniel Gafford? There were already rumors the Mavs would move him, because soon he'll be in line for a big pay raise. How does landing Flagg impact decisions like that one? And how does all of this fit into the Austin Reaves discussion? If nothing else, it emphasizes that everyone not named Luka or with a no-trade clause (i.e. LeBron) has to be on the table.

| Is It Time for the Lakers to Trade Austin Reaves? | 12 May 2025 | 00:35:35 | |
The Lakers have a lot of thinking to do this offseason about how to improve the roster. In theory, the idea would be to fill in areas of need—starting with center but not ending there—around the core of Luka Dončić, LeBron James and Austin Reaves. But the challenge comes in getting players good enough to meaningfully improve the team without having to give up ... well, it's not going to be Luka, and they can't trade LeBron. So is Austin Reaves on the trade block? Should he be? After all, he's coming off a horrendous playoff series against Minnesota where he was, relative to expectations and need, the most significant underperformer on the team. There's an argument to be made (one that's been made by some) that the postseason revealed lasting shortcomings for Reaves as an individual, and more broadly for the Reaves/Dončić defensive combination, in the playoffs specifically. What makes it complicated? Reaves was really good this year. He was one of only 12 players to average more than 20 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5.8 assists. He's improved every year, and is still not fully in his prime. And in the regular season, the two-man combo with him and Luka was well above water (+6.5 net rating). So the idea that he has to go? Maybe that's extreme. But the idea he could go? It would be dereliction of duty not to consider it for the right players.

| How Should the Lakers Build Around Luka Dončić? Plus, LeBron Discusses His Future | 09 May 2025 | 00:33:54 | |
Most people assume that LeBron James will be back for another season—at least—but nobody actually knows for sure at this point. And that apparently includes LeBron, who said on his Mind the Game podcast that he hasn't actually sat down to discuss next season with his family at this point. Hasn't thought about whether he wants to go through the grind again, or whether he's mentally up for it. Now, that's probably not entirely true—he hasn't thought about any of this at all?—but even having played well this year it's reasonable for any athlete who's over 40 and well into his third decade of professional hoops to at least have the conversation. It's reasonable to want a farewell tour, and lord knows the NBA wants to throw him one. So all the signs point to a return, but what the Lakers would love is a little clarity on how long he thinks the run will last. Meanwhile, the Lakers have to figure out how to put a team together around Luka Dončić. That's the big lesson of the Giannis Antetokounmpo rumors that have been percolating. Giannis himself is almost surely not going to be a possibility, but with limited assets the Lakers have to be very thoughtful about how they go about roster construction.

| Giannis Antetokounmpo, Future Laker? (Spoiler Alert: It's Highly Unlikely) | 08 May 2025 | 00:34:06 | |
The rumors are already percolating! Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bucks superstar, NBA champion, is thought to, perhaps, be on the trade block. And, of course, should he decide he wants out of Milwaukee, there are reports that the Lakers would be among his desired locations. So let's start with the first part, first. Is it really possible Giannis could actually leave Milwaukee? Yes, it is. The Bucks are in deep, deep trouble around their roster, the salary cap/luxury tax and trade assets. They were going to be in a very tough spot even before Damian Lillard, well into his 30s, tore his Achilles in the first round of the playoffs. So it actually does make sense that Giannis might see the writing on the wall and ask to leave, and for the Bucks to decide it really is in the best interests of the franchise to oblige him. As for the "play for the Lakers" part? That's a lot more complicated. Like, damn near impossible unless the Lakers somehow figure out how to morph Bucks GM Jon Horst into NIco Harrison. Meanwhile, is there anything JJ Redick can learn from watching how Steve Kerr handled Game 1 for the Warriors against Minnesota?
HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Giannis, leaving Milwaukee? SEGMENT 2: Why Giannis to LA is a no-go. SEGMENT 3: JJ and subs and trust.

| Rob Pelinka Gets Votes for Executive of the Year. Are You Feeling More Confident In Him? | 07 May 2025 | 00:35:21 | |
JJ Redick finished sixth in Coach of the Year voting, and now the guy who hired him matched it in Executive of the Year voting. Lakers GM Rob Pelinka had his highest finish since joining the team, after a notable year that started with zero action in the summer (like, seriously, nothing) and finished with a significant trade for Dorian Finney-Smith and then the NBA-altering deal for Luka Dončić. So when you put it all together, did Pelinka deserve the recognition that came with the voting? (For the record, OKC's Sam Presti rightly won the thing.) Did he have a good year? How much credit does Pelinka deserve for the Dončić trade? And, critically, how much more confidence should Lakers fans have in him to do the very, very hard work of putting a championship team around Luka? Pelinka has been given two gifts - first in a generational superstar entering his prime - and second for the clarity that converting to a Luka-centric organization provides. But that doesn't mean building a winner will be easy.

| Are Lakers Fans Ready for the LeBron Era to End in LA? Plus, a Horrible Trade Idea! | 06 May 2025 | 00:31:56 | |
Monday, we broke down the potential options in front of the Lakers and LeBron James this summer. He's expected to return to the team, but the "how" of it all is important. The reaction? A surprising (or maybe not that surprising) number of fans who for one reason or another, are just ready for the LeBron Era to end in LA. For some, it's because they still don't quite understand the salary mechanics, and think $50 million the Lakers don't pay LeBron is $50 million that could go to a younger star, or younger players. Others appreciate James, but think the Lakers just shouldn't be paying someone as old as he is, even in slow decline, that much of the salary cap. And then there are those who have never warmed up to LeBron, and have only begrudgingly accepted his presence on the team, if at all. (There's some overlap in these Venn diagrams, by the way.) So why hasn't LeBron built up the same type of loyalty from fans as other stars have? Meanwhile, JJ Redick gets some Coach of the Year love, and Bill Simmons is trying to destroy the Lakers. Again.

| LeBron James Has Decisions to Make With His Contract. What's Best for the Lakers? | 05 May 2025 | 00:32:07 | |
We learned heading into the weekend that even if the Lakers managed to push through Game 5 and extend their series with Minnesota, they'd likely finish whatever playoff run remained without LeBron James, who suffered a strained MCL in Wednesday's loss. Now, of course, it's on to the business of the offseason. And while the team doesn't belong to James anymore, his choices are likely to be most impactful in the near term for LA. (Luka Dončić is expected to choose whatever type of contact extension structure he wants, and the Lakers will happily provide it.) LeBron heads into this season with a player option, and what comes next will have a big influence on how the Lakers built what they hope to be a championship caliber squad in both the near and long term. LeBron could opt in to the last deal of his contract, and essentially make himself an unrestricted free agent next season. He could opt out, and sign a deal that leaves money on the table, allowing the Lakers to get a better class of free agent—a full mid-level exception rather than a taxpayer mid-level. He could opt out and sign a one year deal for the max. He could also continue with the pattern of one-and-ones, where he signs a two year deal where only the first year is guaranteed, and the second would be a player option. So which one is best for the Lakers?

| Lakers Eliminated by Timberwolves, Dominated by Gobert in 103-96 Game 5 Loss | 01 May 2025 | 00:36:27 | |
A postseason that began with so much optimism ended far, far faster than virtually anyone expected. The Lakers lose Game 5 to the Wolves Wednesday at the Crypt, final score 103-96. Minnesota left the door wide open for the Lakers, but they couldn't push through. They came out incredibly tight, seemingly unsure of what they wanted to do on the floor. Little breaks that didn't go their way seemed to frustrate them (think airballs landing in the arms of a waiting Wolves player). Luka Dončić took a shot to his back late in the first half, and had to go back to the locker room. It was an open question whether he'd return, emerging from the tunnel only moments before the third quarter started. Still, the Lakers fought back, and again had a chance to win heading into the fourth quarter. And again, they couldn't score enough to get it done. 16 points in the fourth is a fitting final 12 minutes, given how that was a problem all series. The Lakers didn't average 20 points across the five Q4s in the series, a remarkable bit of futility. There are plenty of questions to ask. Austin Reaves had a horrible series. Luka faced a lot of adversity, but wasn't everything the Lakers needed. LeBron put in a heroic effort in many ways, but the Lakers needed a bigger presence in fourth quarters throughout the series. DFS? The bench? Centers? Not much there, either. And then there's JJ Redick, and his decision making. It's going to be a fascinating offseason, following what was one of the most incredible, unpredictable and transformational Lakers seasons in history.

| How Can JJ Redick Build a Long Career With the Lakers? Plus, New All-Star Game Format! | 05 Jun 2025 | 00:35:52 | |
The NBA has become a wasteland for coaches over the last few months. This week, the Knicks canned Tom Thibodeau, despite just having made the Eastern Conference Finals. Why? The reasons are still emerging, but it's reasonable to say that Thibs is someone who tends to wear on players and organizations over time. The same can be said for Michael Malone, who did last a decade in Denver but clearly wore through his welcome despite having a successful team and a very recent title. Taylor Jenkins in Memphis? Fired. Mike Brown? Mike Budenholzer? All fired. Many had just received contract extensions. All had, on one level or another, been successful, either in that gig, or in others. All gone. So how does JJ Redick, who showed real promise in his first season on LA's sideline but also some shortcomings (particularly in the playoffs) parlay his best qualities into the type of long career the Lakers say they were hoping for when they hired him? How do ownership and management play into the equation? If he can't make it happen, what aspects of his coaching are personality are most likely to be his undoing?
