In a highly anticipated Big 12 clash, the No. 2 Iowa State Cyclones dominated the No. 9 Kansas Jayhawks 74-57 at Hilton Coliseum on January 15, 2025. The Cyclones extended their winning streak to 12 games, fueled by a strong defensive performance and efficient offense.  

Iowa State jumped out to an early lead, taking a 40-30 advantage into halftime. Kansas struggled with turnovers, committing 10 in the first half alone. While the Jayhawks mounted a brief comeback early in the second half, cutting the deficit to three, Iowa State quickly regained control.  

The Cyclones' defense stifled Kansas throughout the game, forcing tough shots and capitalizing on turnovers. Offensively, Iowa State shared the ball effectively, with multiple players contributing to the scoring effort. A 16-2 run in the final five minutes sealed the victory for the Cyclones.

With this win, Iowa State solidified their position as a top contender in the Big 12, while Kansas suffered their second conference loss.

United Supermarkets Arena was the site of a Big 12 battle for the ages on Saturday night as the Iowa State Cyclones faced off against the Texas Tech Red Raiders. The atmosphere was intense, with the home crowd roaring in support of the Red Raiders. However, the Cyclones had other plans. The Cyclones faced a daunting 13-point deficit, a tough hill to climb in any opponent's arena, let alone in the raucous environment of Lubbock. But they refused to back down. Led by the explosive Curtis Jones, who finished with a game-high 26 points, Iowa State began to chip away at the lead, silencing the once-boisterous crowd with each basket. The tension in the arena was thick as the clock ticked down. With seconds remaining, it was Joshua Jefferson who emerged as the hero, driving to the basket and converting a clutch layup to force overtime. The stunned silence from the home fans was palpable, replaced only by the cheers of the traveling Cyclone faithful. Overtime was a microcosm of the entire game – a back-and-forth battle with neither team willing to concede. But in the end, it was Jefferson once again who sealed the deal, calmly sinking two free throws to secure the 85-84 victory for the Cyclones. This thrilling road win was a testament to the team's grit and determination, and it sent a clear message to the rest of the Big 12: the Iowa State Cyclones are a force to be reckoned with, even on the road.

The Iowa State Cyclones are poised to have a strong defensive showing in the 2025 season, thanks in part to the addition of Yale transfer, Tamatoa McDonough. The Chicago Bears head coaching position is a perennial hot seat, and with recent struggles, speculation swirls around potential replacements. Could Iowa State’s Matt Campbell be a contender? Campbell's impressive tenure in Ames has turned the Cyclones into a consistent Big 12 competitor. Since 2016, he’s led them to six bowl games, a feat unheard of in recent program history. This success has made him a coveted coaching commodity.

The Bears, however, have a history of coaching instability. Looking at recent hires, the Bears have struggled to find long term success. While recent coaches have had varying levels of success, none have achieved sustained dominance. This pattern of turnover could make a program builder like Campbell an attractive option. He’s proven his ability to build a program from the ground up at Iowa State, a skill desperately needed in Chicago. While there's no concrete evidence linking Campbell to the Bears, his consistent success at Iowa State makes him a name to watch if the Bears decide to make a change.

The Iowa State Cyclones dominated the Utah Utes in an 82-59 victory, marking their 10th straight win. Iowa State's offense was firing on all cylinders, shooting 44.3% from the field compared to Utah's 36.1%. This efficient shooting, coupled with a strong defensive presence, proved to be the winning formula.  

Curtis Jones led the charge for the Cyclones with 23 points, shooting an impressive 10-of-17 from the field. Tamin Lipsey contributed 20 points, while Joshua Jefferson added 17 points and 7 rebounds. Iowa State's balanced scoring attack overwhelmed the Utes.

The Iowa State Cyclones suffered a disappointing 69-52 loss to the Kansas Jayhawks at Allen Fieldhouse, a venue notoriously difficult for visiting teams. The Cyclones struggled mightily on the offensive end, their shooting woes plaguing them throughout the game. They couldn't find a consistent offensive flow, resulting in a low shooting percentage from the field and a general lack of offensive rhythm. Turnovers also proved costly, disrupting any chance for the Cyclones to build momentum.  

Kansas's defense was a force to be reckoned with. They effectively disrupted Iowa State's passing lanes, forcing errant passes and creating numerous steals. The Jayhawks capitalized on these opportunities, converting turnovers into quick points and extending their lead. While Iowa State showed glimpses of potential, particularly in short spurts, they were unable to maintain any sustained pressure against a disciplined and determined Kansas team. The Jayhawks' ability to control the tempo of the game and limit the Cyclones' offensive opportunities proved to be the deciding factor.

This loss marks the third consecutive defeat for the Cyclones, raising concerns about their standing in the highly competitive Big 12 conference. The team will need to address their offensive struggles and find a way to generate more consistent scoring if they hope to turn their season around. For Kansas, this victory solidifies their position as a top contender in the conference. Their dominant performance showcased their defensive strength and offensive efficiency, sending a clear message to the rest of the Big 12 that they are a force to be reckoned with.

Hilton Coliseum witnessed a stunning upset on February 1st, 2025, as the Kansas State Wildcats dismantled the No. 3 Iowa State Cyclones 80-61. This stunning victory not only snapped a 15-game road losing streak for the Wildcats but also marked their first win in Ames since 2022.

The Cyclones, boasting a formidable 17-3 record, were heavily favored. However, the Wildcats had other plans. Their balanced attack saw all five starters scoring in double figures, with guard Dug McDaniel leading the charge with 20 points.  

Kansas State's suffocating defense forced 18 turnovers and limited Iowa State to just 29 rebounds, a testament to their grit and determination. The Wildcats' victory was a historic one, marking the first time a sub-.500 team had defeated a top-five opponent on the road by such a significant margin.

This loss serves as a humbling reminder for the Cyclones that no victory can be taken for granted in the fiercely competitive Big 12 conference. While the loss is undoubtedly a setback, it presents an opportunity for the Cyclones to regroup and refocus their efforts as they continue their push towards the NCAA tournament.

Iowa State has announced they will be playing Miami in the Pop-Tart bowl on December 28th 2024.
