Cam Ward threw for 321 yards and three touchdown passes in his Miami debut, leading the 19th ranked Hurricanes to a statement-making 41-17 road win over the Florida Gators. 

The blowout win put an emphatic end to the Gators' 33-game win streak in their home openers, dating all the way back to 1991. 

The 41 points put up by Miami is the most the Gators have allowed in a home opener in the history of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, aka The Swamp. 

The Hurricanes put up 500+ yards of offense. Ward, the senior transfer QB from Washington St, completed 26-35 passes for 385 yards, including scoring tosses to Cam McCormick, (9 yds) Xavier Restrepo, (24 yds) and Jacolby George. (23 yds) 

Ward is so good and has such a great command on the field that he is making Hurricanes fans so much hope that they might (finally) have another great QB at Quarterback U. They might be right. 

Restrepo led Miami with 7 catches for 112 yards and the TD. 

Damien Martinez, who transferred from Oregon St, ran for 65 yards on 15 carries for Miami. Mark Fletcher, Jr added two rushing touchdowns.

The Hurricanes dominated up front, with both the offensive and defensive lines asserting their will against the Gators all afternoon. 

Miami safety Mishael Powell picked off Mertz and ran it back 67 yards to set up another score. 

Mertz, a preseason awards contender, finished with just 91 yards passing before being knocked out of the game on a hit when he threw an interception.

Montrell Johnson Jr ran for 106 yards for the Gators, but most of that came on his 71-yard TD scamper in the second quarter. 

The Miami defense was outstanding for the entire game, holding the gators to 17 points and just 261 yards of offense. 

The Hurricanes got the ball to start the second half, and went right down the field to score a touchdown and make it 31-10. 

The six-play, yard drive was a thing of beauty, with Ward hitting big passes to Restrepo and Fletcher, Jr, who took it in from a yard out for his 2nd score of the day. 

Miami will definitely be a problem for teams this season. The Canes are looking to make the twelve-team playoff and compete for their first national championship since 2001.

The Miami Hurricanes are looking to build championship level depth. Miami is expected to boast one of the top defensive lines and offensive lines in America. Freshman defensive tackle Justin Scott was recently named to the On3 Sports Preseason Freshman All-American Team. The running back room is well stocked with playmakers like Damien Martinez, Mark Fletcher and Chris Johnson. Jordan Lyle was also named to the On3 preseason freshman team. The Hurricanes are the only team in the ACC returning three wide receivers with at least 800 receiving yards last season.

Miami Hurricanes running back commit Girard Pringle started his senior season of high school on a strong note. The Class of 2025 tailback fueled his Armwood HS team to a dominant victory over Miami Norland. Pringle rushed for well over 100 yards with 2 touchdowns and was named MVP of the game. The 8th rated running back in the class will be arriving at the University of Miami in 2025. He offered his verbal pledge to the Hurricanes back in March. Another Miami verbal commit, Dereon Coleman, had an equally strong 2024 high school football debut. The Class of 2026 quarterback threw four touchdowns for Orlando Jones in their victory over Seminole.

The Miami Hurricanes have just beaten rivals Florida State for the verbal commitment of four star safety Bryce Fitzgerald. The Miami Columbus standout seemed to be trending to FSU mid-week but the Hurricanes were able to make a strong surge. Fitzgerald is the 12th ranked safety in the Class of 2025 according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. Fitzgerald recorded 10 interceptions last season as a high school junior. The Miami Hurricanes have just FLIPPED three star defensive lineman Mykah Newton from the NC State Wolfpack. The Newberry, Florida standout visited Miami in late July and recently earned his Hurricanes offer. The opportunity to be coached by Pro Football Hall of Famer Jason Taylor weighed heavily on Newton, who ultimately decided joining the Hurricanes was his best move. Newton has been a force at Newberry, recorded 13 sacks and 3 forced fumbles last year. He’s been putting on quality weight, now 263 pounds, and will likely play on the interior of Miami’s defensive line.

Is the National Media setting the bar too high when it comes to the Miami Hurricanes preseason hype? ESPN’s Paul Finebaum says the Hurricanes are underrated at number 19. Joel Klatt from Fox Sports, Josh Pate from 247Sports and JD PicKell from On3 Sports are all predicting the Hurricanes to go 11-1. Some Miami fans feel that the “offseason champs” narratives set them up for disappointment. In reality, these analysts are recognizing the talent of Miami’s roster, their strengths in the trenches, and understanding that the Hurricanes have a manageable schedule. Adding quarterback Cam Ward has created extra, understandable hype.

If the Miami Hurricanes want to turn their College Football Playoff dream into a reality, they must clean up these critical statistics this season. The Hurricanes were 93rd in America in turnover margin at -0.3. Miami ranked 81st in America in penalties at a whopping 6.1 per game. They ranked 95th in penalty yards at 57 yards per game. If Miami can drastically cut down on turnovers and penalties, they can dramatically improve on their seven wins from a season ago. On a positive note, the Hurricanes ranked 22nd in America with 35 sacks last year. The defensive line is even better on paper, so they could very likely become a top ten team in sacks. Pressuring Florida quarterback Graham Mertz week one will be critical. Reports out of Gators training camp indicate that the offensive line has not been performing well.

The Miami Hurricanes have completed their first scrimmage of training camp. Head coach Mario Cristobal said the day “belonged to the offense.” The offense was able to create air and separation. Cristobal said they converted a big third down early on and it sparked their momentum the rest of the way. The offensive line is reportedly doing very well. This response from the offense is a very good sign after the defense had won the majority of the reps over the first week. Cristobal said the offense has adjusted to the speed of the defense.

Donno imagines who special Cam Ward can be this season with protection. His offensive line was not good at Washington State last year. The pads have come on and the physicality has increased at Miami Hurricanes training camp. Who have been the top performers? The Hurricanes will play their first scrimmage of camp on Saturday. Miami Hurricanes offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson made headlines on Tuesday when he said Miami’s offense is “not anywhere close to where it needs to be.” Dawson also noted that they are only five practices in, but his disclaimer didn’t stop trolls and aggregators from taking his comments out of context in order to portray Miami’s offense as “lost.” Dawson was using his high standards of where he wants Miami’s offense to be, and what it will take to get them there. He wants more communication, urgency and consistency. Miami is loaded with talent like quarterback Cam Ward, running backs Damien Martinez and Mark Fletcher, and one of the best offensive lines in the country.

The Miami Hurricanes tight end room is poised to break out this season. Junior Elijah Arroyo is healthy and looking great in practice. True freshman Elija Lofton has been one of the top stories in camp, and sophomore Riley Williams continues to improve. What are the early trends developing at Miami Hurricanes’ fall training camp? The competition and roster depth are reaching a point similar to what Mario Cristobal had in Oregon. The entire quarterback room is showing strides, but starter Cam Ward clearly stands out with his accuracy and quick, effortless release. The Miami Hurricanes have just FLIPPED defensive tackle Donta Simpson from his commitment to the Maryland Terrapins. Simpson verbally commits to The U after receiving an offer over the weekend. He grew up a Miami fan and didn’t waste more than five days before offering his verbal pledge. Simpson is a twitchy, explosive playmaker from the interior defensive line. He recorded 19.5 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks last season as a high school junior at Chaminade-Madonna. He even had a pick six last year.

The ACC media has predicted Miami to fall short of an important goal in the upcoming 2024 football season. Miami has been picked to finish third in the conference behind Florida State and Clemson. Finishing third would mean Miami misses out on the ACC Championship game this December in Charlotte. Most Hurricanes fans have the expectation that their team should finish with a top two record in the conference.

The Miami Hurricanes have just wrapped up their second practice of fall training camp. The Hurricanes are getting ready to face the Florida Gators in Gainesville on August 31st. Defensive backs took center stage today with interception drills, and they also made some good plays in 7 on 7. Sophomore cornerback Damari Brown is showing excellent physical development and has good hands in interception drills. He did well in coverage today against Miami’s star receiver, Xavier Restrepo. 

Host Alex Donno recaps what he saw today in the second practice. Donno notes that the competition between Samson Okunlola and Matt McCoy is continuing for the starting left guard job. They will both get ample opportunity to compete before one of them lines up on August 31st. Donno notes continued progress from true freshman quarterback Judd Anderson. Miami will enjoy Friday off but will practice again on Saturday and Sunday. Sunday’s practice, CanesFest at Hard Rock Stadium, will be open to fans.

The Miami Hurricanes defense got the better of the offense on the first day of fall football training camp. Quarterback Cam Ward said his offense was not consistent enough throughout practice and they were not as explosive as they should be. Defensive end Rueben Bain agreed the assessment that the D got it done in day one. Bain pointed out several disruptive plays made on his side of the football. However, he noted that he expects the offense to counter strongly on day two. Head coach Mario Cristobal was satisfied with the first day and the intensity levels on the field. 

Host Alex Donno recaps the first day of football practice with Peter Ariz from CanesInsight. Peter explains why he was so impressed by transfer defensive end Tyler Baron. The guys noted that transfer defensive tackle Simeon Barrow also looks impressive. Young receivers Nathaniel “Ray Ray” Joseph and Joshisa Trader made some strong moments. Ariz discusses what a dangerous combination Damien Martinez and Mark Fletcher will be at running back. Martinez, a transfer from Oregon State, just practiced with Miami for the first time. The Miami Hurricanes can break the narrative of “offseason champs” or “underachievers” in this upcoming college football season. Who will have the quarterback edge between Miami’s Cam Ward and Florida’s Graham Mertz? Mertz will be playing his second season with the Gators after transferring from Wisconsin in 2023. The Miami Hurricanes just hosted some of the top recruits in America at their annual July cookout. The Hurricanes are making a move for five star wide receiver Jaime Ffrench. Five star cornerback DJ Pickett shocked the college football world on Wednesday night by picking LSU over Oregon and Miami. For the past two weeks, top recruiting analysts had considered this a Ducks vs Hurricanes battle, with LSU in third. The narrative flipped very quickly when Pickett put on the purple and gold hat. Mario Cristobal is working to fix an area that failed Miami last season. Cristobal revealed in his weekly news conference that he has hired a time management coach to ensure they follow their process late in games. Last season, Miami neglected to take a knee to run out the clock against Georgia Tech. Cristobal did not reveal who the time management coach will be, but says he will help them “over harp” to make sure their process is followed properly.

The Miami Hurricanes have landed a verbal commitment from four star wide receiver Daylyn Upshaw. The four star prospect from Phenix City, Alabama chose the Hurricanes despite interest from Auburn, FSU, Georgia, Texas and others. Upshaw put up huge numbers for Central HS last season with 59 catches for 1,185 yards and 15 touchdowns. He becomes the first committed receiver in Miami’s Class of 2025.

The Miami Hurricanes have received two new predictions for blue chip prospects in the Class of 2025, including a consensus five star defensive lineman. Gary Ferman from CaneSport On3 logged an RPM Prediction for Miami to land Iose Epenesa, the third ranked defensive lineman in the class. Another top Miami Hurricanes recruiting target has scheduled the announcement date for his verbal commitment. Four star cornerback Jaboree Antoine will decide between Miami, Florida State and LSU on July 20th. The Westgate HS (New Iberia, LA) standout was previously verbally committed to LSU before backing off his pledge in late June. Miami is believed to be in a good position for Antoine, but can they get things over the finish line later this month? The Hurricanes have already done very well at defensive back in this cycle. Miami has landed pledges from four star prospects Hylton “Drake” Stubbs, Amari Wallace, and Chris Ewald. They’ve landed three star Timothy Merritt.

The Miami Hurricanes and Oregon Ducks are battling it out for five star cornerback DJ Pickett. He’s the top recruit in the State of Florida and will be announcing his decision on July 17th. Pickett’s father said in an interview that no matter which school he picks, he will likely shut his recruitment down and focus on that choice before National Signing Day in December. LSU is also in the mix for Pickett, but Steve Wiltfong from On3 Sports believes Miami and the Ducks are in a better position. Most of the buzz currently points to Oregon. Can Miami convince Pickett to follow in the footsteps of his cousin, Booker Pickett Jr, who just enrolled at Miami?

The Miami Hurricanes have just landed a verbal commitment from four star interior offensive lineman Seuseu “SJ” Alofaituli! The Miami Hurricanes have just landed a verbal commitment from blue chip safety Hylton “Drake” Stubbs. The four star prospect out of Mandarin HS in Jacksonville chose the Hurricanes over the Florida Gators. Stubbs had been committed to the USC Trojans but decomitted in late June. Stubbs put up incredible stats in his junior season, including 97 total tackles, 6 interceptions, 2 and a half sacks and 2 forced fumbles. The newest Miami Hurricanes verbal commit, four star linebacker Gavin Nix, explains why he chose the Miami Hurricanes. Nix, a standout from IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL, announced his pledge to Miami over Oregon and FSU on Monday evening. Nix opens up on what made his recruitment by Miami so special and how Miami coaches like linebackers coach Derek Nicholson and head coach Mario Cristobal were instrumental in his process. Nix played at IMG with current Hurricanes Antonio Tripp Jr, Riley Williams and Francis Mauigoa. Francis’ older brother, linebacker Kiko Mauigoa, hosted Nix on his UM visit. 

Nix joined host Alex Donno to talk about his high school career and what Miami fans can expect from him starting in 2025. Nix confirmed he will be an early enrollee at Miami next January. Nix discussed the opportunity he has to come to Miami with fellow 2025 linebackers Elijah Melendez and Ezekiel Marcelin. Nix is already friendly with both of them. The Miami Hurricanes have become the trending leaders in recruiting for four star linebacker Gavin Nix and four star safety Hylton “Drake” Stubbs. They are both scheduled to make announcements this week. Nix will announce his verbal pledge on July 1st, while Stubbs will announce on Independence Day. Will Miami get good news for both? Stubbs recently decommitted from the USC Trojans and Miami has been battling with the Florida Gators for him. The Hurricanes might also get some good news this week for standout class of 2026 quarterback Dereon Coleman. Coleman is set to announce on Wednesday and the Hurricanes have been his trending leader. 

Host Alex Donno talks with Locked On Network recruiting expert Brian Smith about where the Hurricanes stand with these top targets. The Hurricanes have also been trending for four star interior offensive lineman Seuseu “SJ” Alofaituli. He hasn’t scheduled a date for his announcement, but Miami recently earned an RPM prediction from top On3 Sports expert Steve Wiltfong. Smith was just out at Under Armour Future 50, covering the top class of 2026 prospects. He gives Donno the scoop on top athlete Derrek Cooper and other players Miami is in the mix for. Donno and Smith react to a report from PFF College on how Miami is one of the top five programs “under pressure” for this coming football season.
