A Little Night Music is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler. Inspired by the 1955 Ingmar Bergman film Smiles of a Summer Night, it involves the romantic lives of several couples. Its title is a literal English translation of the German name for Mozart's Serenade No. 13, K.

A discussion with the cast and production team about Artform's  production of The Last Five Years performed at the Broadway Studios Theatre in SE London.

The story explores a five-year relationship between Jamie Wellerstein, a rising novelist, and Cathy Hiatt, a struggling actress. The show uses a form of storytelling in which Jamie's story is told in chronological order (starting just after the couple have first met) and Cathy's story is told in reverse chronological order (beginning the show at the end of the marriage). The characters do not directly interact except for a wedding song in the middle as their timelines intersect.

A discussion with the cast and production team about Artform's  production of  Merrily We Roll along performed at the Broadway Studios Theatre in SE London

SYNOPSIS
Based on George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart’s 1934 play of the same name, Merrily We Roll Along follows the successful career of Broadway composer turned Hollywood producer Franklin Shepard backward in time. Throughout the course of the show, during which time regresses from 1976 to 1957, we learn how Frank accomplished this - with the help of his best friends Charley (who writes the books and lyrics) and Mary (who is a writer in her own right and is always around for support and guidance). The trio of friends are inspired to become big players in American musical theatre and book writing and to “change the world” after witnessing the Russian Sputnik, the first artificial satellite, orbiting the earth on a cold October night. However, over time, Franklin learns what the cost of fame and fortune is, losing and alienating his beloved friends and family along the way and giving up his original dreams for ones with more financial and fewer emotional benefits. Those who began the journey with him do not end up at the end of it with him, and though Franklin has fame, fortune, and success, he ultimately realizes that he has left himself with nothing of any value.

A discussion with the cast and production team about Artform's  production of  Blood Brothers the Play performed at the Broadway Studios Theatre in SE London.

Blood Brothers play with book, lyrics, and music by Willy Russell. The story is a contemporary nature versus nurture plot, revolving around fraternal twins Mickey and Eddie, who were separated at birth, one subsequently being raised in a wealthy family, the other in a poor family. The different environments take the twins to opposite ends of the social spectrum, one becoming a councillor, and the other unemployed and in prison. They both fall in love with the same girl, causing a rift in their friendship and leading to the tragic death of both brothers. Russell says that his work was based on a one-act play that he read as a child "about two babies switched at birth ... it became the seed for Blood Brothers."

Synopsis

• In 19th Century Victorian England, Dr. Frederick Treves wanders through an urban carnival in search of freak shows. He happens on a hideously deformed creature called The Elephant Man, and pays the owner Mr. Bytes to examine it. Treves purpose is to present a paper to the Pathological Society and enhance his medical reputation.
  
  The Elephant Man returns from the seminar to Bytes and is beaten severely for wondering off. The man's injuries, as well as an attack from bronchitis, leads Treves to admit him to the hospital. In an attempt to convince the authorities to allow the man to stay, Treves endeavors to communicate with the person. During a meeting, Treves discovers that the man can talk and is educated. The Elephant Man's name is John Merrick and he reveals that he has had this strange disease since he was 14 which benign tumors grow all over his body, face and hands, in which he must sleep sitting up or he will die from suffocation. Merrick is given a room to live in and gradually becomes accepted by most members of the hospital staff. But one hospital night porter sees a money spinner and each evening gathers a drunken crowd of people who will pay any price to see the freak.
  
  Treves attempts to introduce Merrick to London society and brings him over to meet with his wife, who hides her shock at Merricks appearance. Soon the local newspapers run articles on Merrick. One is read by actress Mrs. Kendal who visits Merrick, tells him about her life in the theatre and gives him a copy of Shakespeares plays.
  
  However the night porter is still in business in displaying Merrick. One evening, Bytes joins the throng and after a particularly humiliating brawl, kidnaps Merrick and takes him to France. Severely neglected and very ill, Merrick is once more put on display as the Elephant Man for the local crowds. Bytes' son tells his father that he can take no more of seeing him humiliate a human being, but Bytes tells his son to mind his own business. That night, Bytes' son, with the help of other carnival freaks, releases Merrick and assists his escape back to England.
  
  Reunited with Treves, it appears that Merrick does not have long to live. Merrick visits the theater with Treves and his wife where Mrs. Kendal has her performance dedicated to him. Back at the hospital, Merrick thanks Treves for a splendid evening and afterwards discards all pillows from his bed, determined to lie down like everyone else. Merrick lies down and sleeps one final time before quietly passing away, where his late mother welcomes him to the bright glory of Heave.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart.

Inspired by the farces of the ancient Roman playwright Plautus (254–184 BC), specifically Pseudolus, Miles Gloriosus, and Mostellaria, the musical tells the bawdy story of a slave named Pseudolus and his attempts to win his freedom by helping his young master woo the girl next door. The plot displays many classic elements of farce, including puns, the slamming of doors, cases of mistaken identity (frequently involving characters disguising themselves as one another), and satirical comments on social class. The title derives from a line often used by vaudeville comedians to begin a story: "A funny thing happened on the way to the theatre"

 Production - Into The Woods performed at the Broadway Studios Theatre in SE London.

Into the Woods is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and a book by James Lapine.

The musical intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales, exploring the consequences of the characters' wishes and quests. The main characters are taken from "Little Red Riding Hood" (spelled "Ridinghood" in the published vocal score), "Jack and the Beanstalk", "Rapunzel", and "Cinderella", as well as several others. The musical is tied together by a story involving a childless baker and his wife and their quest to begin a family (the original beginning of the Grimm Brothers' "Rapunzel"), their interaction with a witch who has placed a curse on them, and their interaction with other storybook characters during their journey.

Note Is 10 years since Artform performed Inter the Woods at the Broadway Theatre. Artform will be at the Bob Hope Theatre 2nd April 2025 with a new performance of Inter the Woods as part of Artform's 40th anniversary calibrations.

 production of OH! What A Lovely War performed at the Broadway Studios Theatre in SE London.

Oh! What a Lovely War summarises and comments on the events of World War I using popular songs of the time, many of which were parodies of older popular songs, and using allegorical settings such as Brighton's West Pier to criticise the manner in which the eventual victory was won.

The diplomatic maneuvering and events involving those in authority are set in a fantasy location inside the pierhead pavilion, far from the trenches. In the opening scene, various foreign ministers, generals and heads of state walk over a huge map of Europe, reciting actual words spoken by these figures at the time.

Songs once sung by men in the trenches helped audiences to think of the war from the point of view of ordinary soldiers rather than officers.

Pantomime - A British theatrical tradition

Booing and hissing the villain, cheering and heckling the cast, throwing sweets and candy back at the audience and a theatre sing along. An awful trip to the theatre you ask? ‘Oh yes it is!’ Well actually… ‘Oh no it isn’t!’ Pantomime is as British as Fish and Chips, a love of queuing and a Sunday Roast but if you live in another part of the globe you may never have heard of, let alone seen, one. Keeping Matthew company this week are guests who will be able to tell you all about it. From how to write and direct the genre to choreography and choosing the best music to fit the show. All from their experiences of working with The Bob Hope theatre in South East London for a local family audience. So settle in and forget your theatrical troubles because after all remember, ‘It’s behind you!’

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead
Artform are thrilled to welcome another company to chat about their next production.  This time we delve into Tom Stoppard’s absurdist, existential tragicomedy which is being performed at the Edward Alderton Theatre.  We are joined by the director alongside cast members and Shakespeare fans who delve into the untold story of these minor characters from Hamlet.  With echoes of Waiting for Godot, intermixing of reality and illusion this incredibly funny and yet poignant piece is a must see for any theatrical fan.
