Let me ask you a question: How much time are you spending creating posts for Facebook and Instagram that are forgotten a few days—or even a few hours—later?
If you’re a local business owner, you may be spending a lot of time trying to “stay active” on social media.
But here’s what I tell my clients at LocalInternetPresence.com:
There’s a big difference between creating content and building an online presence.
Facebook and Instagram are great for staying connected with people who already know you. But if your goal is to get found by new customers, blog posts and podcasts can be much more powerful long-term marketing tools.
Why?
Because people search.
When someone goes to Google and types, “best plumber in Nashville,” “how do I choose a realtor,” or “best place to buy local honey,” they’re not casually scrolling. They’re looking for an answer.
And that’s where your website content can become a customer-generating asset.
Your Blog Posts Keep Working
When you publish a useful, well-optimized blog post on your website, it doesn’t disappear tomorrow.
It can continue to be discovered by people searching for the information you wrote about.
One good article can potentially bring traffic to your website for months or years.
Compare that with a Facebook post. It may get some attention today, but tomorrow it’s already buried underneath hundreds of newer posts.
Your website is your digital real estate.
You own it. You control it. And you can keep building on it.
Podcasts Are Content Machines
I’m also a big believer in podcasts.
Why?
Because one good conversation can become a tremendous amount of content.
A 30-minute podcast can become a podcast episode, a blog article, a transcript, several social media posts, short videos, frequently asked questions, and more.
Instead of constantly asking, “What should I post today?” you can have a real conversation about your business, your expertise and the problems your customers are trying to solve.
Then turn that conversation into content people can actually find.
Social Media Still Has a Place
I’m not saying you should abandon Facebook or Instagram.
Use them!
But use them strategically.
Create the valuable content on your website first. Then use social media to distribute and promote it.
Don’t build your entire marketing strategy on rented real estate.
Build your own online library and use social media to send people there.
That’s a much smarter long-term strategy.
Build Something That Gets More Valuable
At Local Internet Presence in Nashville, my focus is helping local businesses get found online and turn that visibility into customers.
I believe your content should do more than collect likes.
It should answer questions.
Demonstrate your expertise.
Build trust.
Attract search traffic.
And ultimately help generate phone calls, leads and sales.
So the next time you’re thinking about what to post on Facebook or Instagram, ask yourself a different question:
“What can I create today that will still be working for my business a year from now?”
That’s the difference between posting and building an online presence.
