The Who, How and What of Christian Leadership (Love Your Leaders, Part 1)12 Oct 202300:25:41

October is Pastor/Minister/Clergy Appreciation Month, so starting this month our episodes will take a slightly different approach to normal. Across October (and into early November) we will be sharing a 4-part series on what the Bible has to say about loving our leaders. We are releasing the first two today, with the others to follow fortnightly.

Whilst this series may be most aimed at those who are led by others, we also hope it will be a help to leaders themselves as they think about how we encourage church cultures where people love their leaders well, and as we consider topics like how leaders should be appointed, supported and, if necessary, removed (Part 2); what attitude we should have towards our leaders (part 3); and what right actions are towards leaders (Part 4).

Today we are kicking off by thinking through the who, how and what of Christian leadership.

Glory Shone Around08 Dec 202200:12:08

This is the final of three episodes as part of our early Advent series for busy ministers/church leaders.

Ministers generally begin to think about the true meaning of Christmas at least as early as decorations start festooning shops. They need to plan Christmas activities and prepare talks. Getting started is easier than normal service planning sermon prep – the dates are fixed and the texts are obvious. Bringing plans to completion can be harder. The planning phase comes at a busy time in church life, when programmes are in full swing and few others are thinking about Christmas, and an emotionally tough time for all of us, when days are shortening and temperatures are falling. The passages and carols can seem overly familiar and it is not easy to scrape away the cultural accretions of materialism and niceness to get to the reality of the incarnation.

So, as ministers prepare and plan to lead others in their appreciation of Christmas, we in Living Leadership want to help them enjoy its wonder and apply its significance to leadership.

Summer Break28 Jul 202200:38:38

In this episode, Jess gives an update on our summer plans and shares a prayer Paul Coulter has written which seeks to recapture the original meaning of the words we use for breaks from work and which echoes well-known words from Psalm 51:10-12. We invite you to make it part of your daily prayers during your summer break, however big or small.

Here it is:

Father, You are the giver of every good gift and I am your finite creation and beloved child. I receive the gift of days without work as a good gift from you. Free me from false guilt and help me to make the most of this time. May my ‘holiday’ be a sequence of holy days, encountering and enjoying you. In my ‘leave’, may I abandon burdens I was not made to carry and rejoice in you and your creation. In my ‘vacation’, help me to be unoccupied with work and its stresses. In my ‘break’, fracture the grip of unhealthy attitudes and patterns in my life. May my ‘days off’ be unhurried days of delight in those closest to me. Recreate in me a clean heart during this time. Refashion my rhythms in tune with your heart. Restore my joy in your salvation. Renew a right spirit in me that honours you in rest and in work. Refresh my love for you and others. May I live each day without work aware of your presence and alive by your Holy Spirit, Through Jesus Christ, my Lord, Amen.
