All humans go through transitions, and many of us experience challenges that cause us to question who we are and evolve into a more authentic version of ourselves.

The Unseen Leader: the Power of Understated Leadership with Martin Gutmann Ph.D.20 Mar 202400:34:20

Leadership is one of the most hyped topics in business today. But are the historical archetypes of Leadership really the inspiration we should be drawing on?

In this episode we’re unpacking the recent book of Martin Gutmann Ph.D., The Unseen Leader which is an exploration of leadership through the lens of historical scholarship, offering a less sensationalized and stereotypical protagonist's tale of leadership.

Martin’s research focuses on leaders who largely remained unseen and unwritten about through the pages of history. Martin Gutmann Ph.D., is a Swiss-American historian, author, and professor at the Lucerne School of Business, Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Switzerland. He has published three books, most recently (as co-editor with Dan Gorman) Before the UN Sustainable Development Goals: A Historical Companion (Oxford University Press). Play On: How Purposeful Play Unlocks Human Potential At Work with Dara Simkin31 May 202300:41:56
Many of us tend to think of work and play as two separate concepts. We banish play to outside work hours, or as busy working adults some of us barely play at all. Today, Alexis Zahner and I are speaking with a woman who will change how you think about play. Dara Simkin shares how these restrictive, rigid ideas about play do us, our leadership and our business a massive disservice. She unpacks how play is actually an essential component of our humanity, and what we stand to gain when we welcome play into our worklives and beyond.

She empowers professionals to embrace the beauty of discomfort, while challenging them to consider the consequences of a life void of play. She has shared the stage with world-renowned play researcher Dr Stuart Brown and IDEO Play Lab founder Brendan Boyle when she created and hosted the 2018 and 2019 Break Out play conferences in Melbourne. She’s also presented to organisations like AGL, PWC, McKinsey, MYOB, MediBank and IAG. Her unique energy and enthusiasm is contagious. The Impact of Grief on Humans at Work with George Kohlrieser02 Nov 202200:53:42
Welcome to the We Are Human Leaders podcast. What do hostage negotiators and CEOs have in common?
Which skills serve you when your life is being threatened, but also when you’re relating to your colleagues in an everyday meeting?
On this episode of We Are Human Leaders we’re talking to someone who has vast experience with both situations: George Kohlrieser. In this conversation, we are talking about grief. We explore how grief - especially unresolved grief - impacts us as humans and as leaders. And how we can start to bring awareness to grief so it becomes a powerful tool for connection and even creativity in the workplace and beyond.

George is a clinical and organizational psychologist, author, speaker and consultant. He is Professor of Leadership and Organizational Behavior at the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) business school based in Lausanne Switzerland and the author of the award-winning book Hostage at the Table: How Leaders Can Overcome Conflict, Influence Others and Raise Performance and co-author of Care to Dare: Unleashing Astonishing Performance through Secure Base Leadership.
George shares his personal experiences of grief as well as his professional experience as a hostage negotiator. He gives us powerful takeaway tips that we can use today as leaders, and as humans, to open up this important topic.
A strong content warning for this episode, we discuss issues of mental health, violence, trauma, death and suicide, which may be distressing or triggering for some listeners.

After our episode recording with George, Alexis and Sally chatted for probably another hour on the insights we’d each gained. There is no escaping grief. It is part of the human experience. By owning our own grief, and being present to the grief of those around us, we grow as humans, and leaders.
And as George mentions, we cannot grieve alone. If you’re experiencing grief we encourage you to reach out for support.
We hope George’s experience, kindness and wisdom touches you as much as it did us.

Overcoming Self-Sabotage to Embrace Your Power with Iman Oubou24 Aug 202200:53:36
In this episode of We Are Human Leaders we explore the all-to-common struggle for women in business, the issue of Self-Sabotage and stepping into our authentic power.

Iman Oubou is a Moroccan American self-made entrepreneur, former beauty queen, and published scientist on a mission to change the women's media landscape. Through her diverse experience with business, pageantry, and STEM, Iman noticed gender disparities in the workforce and an omnipresent bias across printed and digital media. She founded SWAAY, an all-in-one publishing platform for women, to champion the voices of female change-makers through the power of storytelling. She is author of the 2022 book “The Glass Ledge: How to Break Through Self-Sabotage, Embrace Your Power, and Create Your Success.”
This conversations explores the personal, professional and practical elements of self-sabotage, how it may lead to burnout in our professional lives and how we recognise, acknowledge and overcome it with strategic behaviour changes which we each have the power to take ownership of.

Iman Oubou's latest book The Glass Ledge: How to Break Through Self-Sabotage, Embrace Your Power, and Create Your Success is now available internationally.

With THE GLASS LEDGE, Oubou offers a disruptive guide to help women explore and resolve the internalized oppression and self-sabotaging beliefs that rob them of realizing their true potential. Rather than prompting women to break the glass ceiling and ask how society needs to change to empower women, this book helps them reclaim their power by asking themselves, “What can I do differently?” Oubou explores the 10 most common themes around which women tend to derail themselves, including power, likability, authenticity, conflict, and more. They are organized according to when women are most likely to face them head- on, as some issues present earlier in one’s career while others tend to appear later. Each chapter focuses on one of these nuanced themes, incorporating counterintuitive and eye-opening information, including:
• Anecdotes from Oubou’s personal journey from beauty pageant queen to medical missionary and scientist to entrepreneur
• Stories from other high-profile successful women in a variety of industries
• Academic and scientific research
• Lessons and tips to overcome negative self-perception and avoid slipping off the ledge while working
your way toward your own definition of success
• Exercises that will help women turn the teachings into self-reflections and actionable next steps

Welcome to the We are Human Leaders Podcast, In today's episode we're diving into a topic that every single human being on earth has experience with - stress. In our wide ranging conversation with Dr Delia McCabe, we explore how to navigate stress using nutrition and neuroscience and the intersection of the two.

Stress is a natural occurrence in everyday life, however its impact can be detrimental to ourselves, and how we lead others. Dr McCabe helps us understand the relationship between our nutrition and its impact on our brain and our ability to manage stress. This session is incredibly insightful and sheds light on the power of nutritional neuroscience and how we can take practical steps in managing our stress just through what we eat.

Delia McCabe (PhD) shifted her research focus from clinical psychology to nutritional neuroscience upon discovering nutrition’s critical role in mental wellbeing while completing her Masters. Delia’s research into the neurological effect of specific nutrients on female stress has been published in several peer-reviewed journals, she is a regular featured expert in the media and her two internationally available books are available in four languages. Using her background in psychology, combined with evidence-based nutritional neuroscience and neurological perspectives, Delia supports behaviour change and stress resiliency within corporates, and for individuals who want to optimize their brain health, via online courses, workshops and tailored events internationally.

Dissent and Defy: Insubordination Done Effectively with Dr Todd Kashdan11 Jun 202400:41:55

Who do you think of when I say the words rebel or insubordination? Perhaps someone who’s disagreeable, maybe even aggressive, someone who sits outside society or the popular norm? What if I told you that insubordination, when done well, isn’t just useful – but should be encouraged?

In this episode we’re learning how to dissent and defy effectively with Dr. Todd B. Kashdan, Professor of Psychology at George Mason University and author of The Art of Insubordination: How to dissent and defy effectively.

This conversation is one we wish we’d had at the beginning of our careers. Todd's wisdom has given us the language and the tools to not only understand how to challenge norms in our workplaces, societies and even political structures ourselves, but support and amplify the voices of others doing the same.

Todd is a leading authority on well-being, curiosity, psychological flexibility, and resilience. He has published over 225 peer-reviewed articles and is in the top 1% of cited scientists in the world (over 48,000 times). Todd has received the American Psychological Association Award for Distinguished Scientific Early Career Contributions to Psychology. He is the author of several books including Curious? Discover the Missing Ingredient to a Fulfilling Life, The Upside of Your Dark Side, and his latest The Art of Insubordination: How to Dissent and Defy Effectively which we unpack today.

To us Todd is a shining example of divergent thinking, both through his research and the incredible way he articles these important concepts. This conversation is an absolute must listen for anyone who is ready and feeling the urge to drive change in the world around them.
