Surprising Spice Benefits That Help Fight Diseases | Kanchan Koya28 Aug 202401:05:25

Spices as medicine? Today I chat with Kanchan Koya, a Harvard-trained molecular biologist who traded the lab for the kitchen, and now runs Spice Spice Baby and has a cookbook packed with vibrant spice-filled recipes.

We dig into the science behind spices - from fighting inflammation to boosting gut health. Did you know a dash of cinnamon could help blood sugar? Or that chilli might extend your lifespan? It could also be our way to fight against chronic diseases.

Kanchan shares easy ways to sprinkle more spices into your meals. We talk about building a "food pharmacy" and making cooking joyful.

This conversation got me dreaming of how I can explore more recipes with my spice rack.

I hope it inspires you to see spices differently, and maybe you'll start your own delicious health experiments in the kitchen after today.

Kanchan Koya is a Harvard-trained molecular biologist turned author, podcast host, and nutrition coach. With a PhD from Harvard Medical School, she leverages her scientific expertise to champion the health benefits of ancient spices. Kanchan founded Spice Spice Baby, authored a bestselling cookbook, and hosts the Radical Vitality podcast, blending cutting-edge science with ancient wisdom for vibrant living.

Let me know if you try anything new!

The Science for Real Life Happiness with Professor Paul Dolan 22 Nov 202201:07:34

Being happy, is surely what most of us want, right? We’re all on our own journeys to achieve it, but is there a real science behind it that we could all follow?

That’s what we discuss with Paul a behavioural scientist at LSE, who has been called the Professor of Happiness having written books including Happiness by Design” and “Happy Ever After”.  Paul’s work focuses on the measurement of happiness, its causes and consequences  and the implications for public policy. He was appointed Chief Academic Advisor to the UK Government Economic Service on Economic appraisal aka he advises governments on behavioural science and wrote the questions that are being used to monitor happiness in the UK.

We explore how finding the one, having more money, education and career success is in fact not the route to happiness and why. How single, childfree women are happiest and actually how it is the balance of purpose and pleasure is of utmost importance, when it comes to happiness.

Topics we cover:

  • What is happiness?
  • How is it measured?
  • Is happiness a choice?
  • Social Narratives
  • Is happiness subjective?
  • Four common myths of happiness
  • Past experiences
  • Purpose vs pleasure
  • How can we design our environment to impact happiness?
  • How can we retrain our mindset around happiness?
  • What does LWBW mean to Paul?

Are we sweet enough? Sugar, sweeteners, and our health with Dr Tim Spector & Dr Sarah Berry15 Nov 202201:23:18

Welcome to this week’s slice of your wellbeing!

This week is National Sugar Awareness Week. Check these stats out.

56% of the UK diet comes from ultra-processed foods. 62% of the sugar we eat is found in the ultra-processed category. With sugar rising in our diets, today we shine the spotlight on sugar, for good or for worse, we find out the facts.

We’re joined by two guests who we had on last season separately - Dr Tim Spector & Dr Sarah Berry. Tim is professor of Epidemiology at King’s College London whose current work focuses on the microbiome and nutrition. He is co-founder of ZOE and the lead researcher behind the world's biggest citizen science health project - the ZOE Health Study. Sarah is a Reader in Nutritional Sciences at King’s College London and is the Chief Scientist at ZOE.

There is a lot of information around sugar and how it can affect us which can be overwhelming, so we’ve got Tim & Sarah on the show to help break down some of that information as well as debunking some myths. They explain what sugar is, how to spot it in your foods, the impact it has on our blood glucose and wider health. We also discuss sweeteners, whether natural is better than artificial, intermittent fasting, the Big IF Study undertaken by ZOE which looks at intermittent fasting and how you can get involved.

Earth Health, Reinvention & Climate Activism - Arizona Muse08 Nov 202200:57:20

Climate change is happening, and it can feel frightening when we read about it, but in today’s conversation Arizona helps us all understand that we have the power to take action and just how we can do it!

This week’s slice of wellbeing is with activist, model and founder of Dirt charity, Arizona Muse. She’s one of the fashion sectors most highly regarded champions for sustainability. DIRT works to regenerate soil by supporting the Biodynamic Farming movement, and has already partnered with brands such as Vrai, Anya Hindmarch and Weleda on projects around the world.

Soil isn’t really thought of as a particularly interesting or sexy topic, however, you might change your mind after this week’s episode of The Live Well Be Well Podcast.

Alongside this we cover Arizona’s childhood, the moment that sparked her interest in activism, and what biodynamic farming and greenwashing are.  After this you’ll feel a huge leap into becoming more conscious consumers.

A really interesting episode, one not to be missed.

Going beyond our 5 senses with Ari Peralta25 Oct 202201:03:01

Have you heard the term Sensory Wellness? Do you know how to connect to your inverse? How many senses other than sight, smell, sound, touch and taste do you know?

Ari Peralta is a neuroscientist, a Forbes recognised innovator and award-winning sensory designer. Ari transitioned into neuroscience after his own trauma lead him to pivot his whole career to where he’s at now - working alongside others to create wellness-led sensory initiatives across a wide range of industries.

What is sensory wellness, you might ask? It’s going beyond the usual 5 senses and looking at how we can create healthier and happier environments,  enrich experiences and also promote self-awareness in the real world and web3 aka the Metaverse. Research shows that engaging the senses can help strengthen patients emotional wellbeing and support healing, including easing feelings of depression and anxiety.

In this episode we discuss how we can go beyond our usual 5 senses to improve our own wellbeing, what a sensory reset is and how we can create it for ourselves. Ari shares how he and his team created personalised art installations of people’s genes in relation to chronotypes, how we can reframe our brains to be more creative, Ari also gives us tools to help us navigate stress and anxiety by changing the frame around a situation you not only change your perception of it, but it's meaning to you.

This is a seriously interesting conversation, one not to be missed!

Sarah Ann's Reflections for Season 802 Aug 202200:49:53

As we come to the end of a very exciting season eight, I wanted to personally share all the learnings I’ve learned from the last 12 episodes.

I feel incredibly honoured as the host of this podcast to sit down and have inspiring, emotional conversations with such a diverse range of people.

I’ve learned so much after eight seasons, but even more especially after these 12 episodes because this season we took a real, drive focus by increasing our production and going to every single guest’s house all over the country.

And through that, being in their homes, connecting to them more personally, not only do I remember all of those conversations, but I really felt a sense that they opened up to me more as well.

I feel really privileged and honoured.

And for that reason, I wanted to end the series with a solo episode with all the things I’ve learned personally.

We spoke with people from Professor David Nutt who looks at psychedelics and how we can actually wire our brain, to how the epicentre of our health is our gut health, and through entrepreneurial women such as Liz Earle, she taught me how we can engineer our own serendipity.

So all of my findings and learnings, I am going to bring to you today to end series 8.

If there’s anything you learned personally, please do let me know - I always love hearing from everyone who listens to the podcast.

Send me an email or send me a DM.

Why You Need to Care About Your Gut Health - with Dr. Federica Amati26 Jul 202201:01:47

How can you supercharge your gut?

Dr Federica Amati is a registered nutritionist with a PhD in clinical medicine research, who specialises in achieving optimal nutrition through evidence-based, personalised nutrition plans.

Federica works as a nutritional scientist and consultant for ZOE Nutrition. The ZOE app launched in the US and the ZOE covid study uses the technology in place that is now the largest live study with 4 million registered participants logging into the app. But there’s more on that later because today we explore what the gut microbiome is and how it links with an individual’s diet and metabolic health. We look at our gut health and avoiding food-driven inflammation, and ask: could this be the key to achieving a healthy weight, maximising your energy, and overall optimal health?

Your Diet Probably Isn't Working In the Way You Think It Is - with Dr. Sarah Berry19 Jul 202200:51:12

In today's episode, I interview Dr. Sarah Berry, a Reader in Nutritional Sciences at King's College London and the lead nutritional scientist on the ZOE Predict study, which you may remember if you listened to Tim Spector's episode from a few weeks ago.

And before you hit play, I want to ask you a few questions and just take a moment to actually look at the complexity of your own diet.

  • Do you analyse calories?
  • Do you look at macros?
  • Or do you follow a specific diet to optimise your health?

As a nutritionist, I am always interested in what inspires people to make choices around their diet.

As individuals, we are complex, but in today's episode, we break down how complex the food we consume is too, and how this impacts our own health.

And you may be surprised that the type of diet style you have adopted may not be having as much of an impact as you wished.

We delve into:

  • the complexity of food versus the complexity of us and how this affects our own health outcomes
  • the food matrix to help us learn even more around the complexity which lies in our own responses to food
  • the concept of how and when we eat is going to have a dramatic health outcome on our health markers
  • Plus social jet lag and time restricted eating.

This is a really interesting episode which I personally have learned a lot from. I think you’ll enjoy it too.

The Psychology of Trauma and How to Find Your True Voice with Emmy Brunner12 Jul 202200:43:32

Emmy Brunner is a psychotherapist, author and personal empowerment coach. Author of The Trauma Redefined, and Find Your True Voice, Emmy is an expert on trauma, and I sat down with her at her beautiful home in Brighton to discuss dealing with shame and finding your highest self.

Emmy believes we’ve all experienced trauma in our lives. What we now refer to as mental illness is actually our response to those traumas. When we cultivate a compassionate relationship with ourselves, we are able to step into our power, creating a mindset that expects and generates success. When we learn to listen to, and love, ourselves we unlock this ability.

This was such a powerful episode to record and I’m so excited to share it with you. As always please do let me know your thoughts on the episode, share it with friends and subscribe if you haven’t already.

Why Everyone Should Have Therapy with photographer royality Rankin05 Jul 202200:51:59

John Rankin Waddell, better known as Rankin, is photography royalty. I’ve been lucky enough to know Rankin since the beginning of my career, and after all these years it’s an honour to be the one behind the lens, shining a spotlight on his glittering career.

Rankin is one of the best-known and sought-after portrait photographers around; he’s shot everyone from Kate Moss, to Miley Cyrus, to Madonna and to the Queen of England. He's also made a name for himself in publishing by launching ground-breaking magazines such as Dazed and Confused, AnOther and Hunger.

On the podcast today, we go beyond the photography. We explore the sacrifices Rankin has made, the worries and struggles of a life behind the camera, and how he coped with the increasing demands in his life. We discuss how to maintain a work-life balance when the work is non-stop, and why everyone should get therapy.

OTO’s premium range of wellness and sleep products harness the power of the most pure and potent CBD and plant extracts to rebalance mind, body and skin.

Not only do they look chic, but their two tinctures, the Power and Sleep Drops, I personally love! They really help me feel grounded and calmer. In the morning to help steady my focus. I use their power drops which contain a zesty orange flavour, cacao husk and vitamins C, D3 and E. I can find mornings quite stressful without my morning rituals of exercise, breathwork and OTO. Having Power Drops in my morning ritual helps me feel ready for whatever the day throws at me.

If you struggle with switching off and sleep, do check out their Sleep Drops for a more peaceful night's sleep. They have a light minty taste, perfect for after you’ve brushed your teeth.  Sleep, we know, is the foundation of a calmer and more focused mind, and better health, and I would advocate sleep is the route to your health success.

How to rewire your brain with Professor David Nutt 21 Jun 202201:14:07

Today’s episode is a very special one.

My guest for this episode was fired in 2009 by the Home Secretary for his inconvenient views on drug policy, famously stating that ‘taking the drug ecstasy is no more dangerous than riding a horse.’ He really does stand up for what he believes in, and I’m fascinated by, and in awe of, his brilliant mind.

Professor David Nutt is a neuropharmacologist, and Director of the Centre for Psychedelic Research at Imperial College London. He has published over 500 original research papers, 8 government reports, 35 books and his latest book on cannabis came out last month.

I felt so honoured to speak with Professor Nutt today. Expect conversations around psychedelics, how psychedelic treatment can lead to breakthroughs in mental health, and the impact of drugs such as cannabis and alcohol.

We are in a mental health crisis, and opening our eyes to new fields of research and treatments can be so beneficial for us. Keep an open mind, and enjoy my discussion with Professor Nutt.

Professor Tim Spector OBE is an expert on nutrition and gut health. He has been ranked in the top 1% globally for most-cited scientists, and in March 2020 he launched what is now the world’s largest ongoing study: the ZOE covid symptom study app. Since then he has gained more than 4 million users recording their daily symptoms and helped millions improve their health.

Diving deep into the world of gut health this week, Tim and I discuss how the foods we eat play a key role in our health. We talk about personalised nutrition and how you can optimise your health.  We cover how our nutrition can help increase our longevity and what drugs are on the horizon here too. I’m so honoured to speak to Tim in this episode, as he is one of the world’s top scientists in his field.

Grab a pen and get ready to make some notes! We explore how the ZOE data can inform our treatment of chronic disease, the foods that Tim swears by, and how we can all improve our gut health with nutrition.

From Premier League to premier health: Thomas 'Hal' Robson-Kanu's route to success24 May 202201:08:45
The food we eat isn’t always the magic bullet, but if we don’t eat correctly it can cause destructive effects. Signed at the age of 15 to a professional football contract, Thomas ‘Hal’ Robson-Kanu struggled with persistent injuries in the subsequent years. Robson-Kanu played in the premier league, and internationally for Wales. He battled with continuous injuries, while he watched other players his age progress. After two years of being in and out of hospital, battling serious injuries and hitting dead ends with the healing process, he and his father decided to tackle it themselves.

As a nutritionist, I’m forever amazed by the lack of awareness and education around nutrition in the sporting world. Nutrition is one of the main foundation and pillars of performance.

In today’s episode: we explore just how far nutrition can go in its healing power.

How Liz Earle built one of the UK's biggest independent beauty brands17 May 202201:03:06

Liz Earle has revolutionised the wellbeing sector. Her brand has forever changed the connection between beauty and health.

I had the privilege of sitting down with Liz to discuss her journey to becoming an entrepeneur in the early days, juggling motherhood, and coming full circle to focusing on her brand and the wellbeing side.

I remember growing up with my Mum using Liz Earle products, and I always remember the emphasis on natural beauty care that they brought, for the first time, to the centre stage.

For more than thirty years, Liz has remained a respected and award-winning authority in the world of beauty, natural nutrition, health and wellbeing. She is dedicated to sharing her knowledge as a broadcaster (having started her TV career on ITV’s This Morning in 1989, she’s still a contributor to the show), writer and trusted household name, as well as being a best-selling author with a range of lifestyle titles and a multi-brand founder.

Liz opens up about the trials and the tribulations of building a beauty empire, and how she got to where she is today.

Liz Earle is a champion of women’s health, media influencer, author of 36 books, TV presenter, podcast host and charity-founder. She is also on a mission to help women celebrate every stage of their lives – especially that all-important second half.

How can you be your most authentic self with Samantha Clarke 05 Apr 202200:44:25
Everyone wants to be authentic. You want to be true to yourself, not a slavish follower of social expectations. You want to “live your best life,” pursuing your particular desires, rather than falling in line with whatever everyone else thinks happiness requires. Studies have even shown that feelings of authenticity can go hand in hand with numerous psychological and social benefits: higher self-esteem, greater well-being, better romantic relationships and enhanced work performance. In today's episode I speak to changemaker and happiness consultant Samantha Clarke, who is on a mission to build robust changemakers out of the next generation of leaders. Her philosophies and neuroscience, therapeutic and positive psychology led processes instil resilience, deep wellbeing and strength to give her clients the power, intentionality and courage to do important work in the world. The power of plant based eating with Dr Gemma Newman 29 Mar 202200:57:12

One of the top questions I am asked as a nutritionist is, ‘what does the perfect diet look like?” My answer is, there is not a perfect diet but there will be elements of a balanced approach which will work for you as an individual.

One thing we can be certain of is that a balanced and whole food approach to nutrition can help reduce and prevent non-communicable diseases such as heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes.

A movement towards plant based eating continues to grow, with record breaking numbers of 605,000 individuals taking part in Veganuary this year.

The power of plants is starting to take centre stage and to help me explore this conversation futher I speak to Dr Gemma Newman, author of Plant Power Doctor - a prescription for a healthier you.

How to unwire perfectionism with flexible thinking with Poppy Jamie22 Mar 202200:59:28
Why do we need to think differently? How are our thinking styles harming our health? We can set the illusion with ourselves that everything is fine with material success, but this illusion can come at a high cost in our mental health, resulting in low self-esteem, insecurity and anxiety.

We are often most terrified of the thing that makes us the most human, the ability to feel. We’ve created our own patterns through learnt behaviours of how we should perform, think and feel, yet is this pattern really making us happy?

To help me delve into this conversation a little further, I speak with Poppy Jamie who is one of the world’s leading entrepreneurs, podcast hosts and speakers in the mental wellbeing and mindfulness space.

Poppy is on a mission to democratise conversation and tools for emotional and mental health and she shares more on this in today’s episode.

Psychedelic Renaissance: the emerging drug boom in mental health28 Feb 202201:05:41
Psychedelic therapy is understood to harness a therapeutic window opened up by the brain effects of the drugs to facilitate insight and emotional release and, with psychotherapeutic support, a subsequent healthy revision of outlook and lifestyle.

In America, Oregon is legalizing mushrooms. Ketamine can be delivered to your home and people are micro dosing LSD to treat pandemic-related anxiety.

Dr Martin Williams is a research fellow formerly in pharmaceutical sciences and now in psychology at Monash University. His interests in psychology and pharmacology have led him towards the multidisciplinary study of psychoactive compounds and their roles in contemporary society.

In today’s episode, we explore the psychedelic renaissance and how we can harness these to treat and support  mental health.

Is vaping the healthier option to a smoke free nation with Dr Cother Hajat21 Feb 202200:42:51

What is the future of tobacco use?

Do you remember the days when we could smoke indoors, restaurants and even hospitals? When smoking was a status symbol of being cool. Our mindsets to what is acceptable around smoking has shifted, yet what are your thoughts on a smoke free nation?

Smoking remains the leading preventable cause of illness and premature death, responsible for more than eight million deaths a year globally.

Dr Cother works in public health and epidemiology, working on preventing risk factors for chronic disease including; diet, smoking, alcohol, exercise and mental health. New Zealand plans to outlaw tobacco for anyone born post 2008, and the UK are planning to prescribe e-cigarettes to help smokers quit.

What is Eco-Anxiety with, psychoanalyst Anouchka Grose14 Feb 202200:48:29

Climate change is the greatest threat to global health in the 21st century, so much so, that some people are making the decision to not have any children for the fear of where our world is heading. Well known celebrities such as Cate Blanchett speaks openly about suffering with Eco-Anxiety and has even launched a podcast surrounding it. So what is Eco-Anxiety? To help me explore this I speak to Anouchka Grose, who is a psychoanalyst who has written a book on exactly this.

Are your teeth ageing you with Dr Richard Marques07 Feb 202200:38:12

In 2020, the UK women’s skincare market was worth £1.4bn – a sure sign of our eagerness to stop the effects of ageing. Yet when it comes to our teeth, are we taking as much care?

Tooth decay is one of the most common health problems in the UK. Over half of adults in the UK have one or more decayed or damaged teeth. Over half (nearly ¾ of) children aged 8 to 15 years have some tooth decay in their teeth.

To help us navigate the do's and don'ts, I speak to Harley St Dr Richard Marques.

It is time to break up with diet culture and stop trying to chase the ideal cure.

Diet companies and influencers capitalise on our system beliefs that there is a quick fix.

With the diet industry thought to be worth $60 billion, alongside an 80% failure rate, there is a lot of misinformed information.

To help you navigate the truth in what will help you lose weight and optimise your health, I speak to Cambridge geneticist and obesity expert, Dr Giles Yeo.
