| Episode 299: House Of Blues, Chicago, IL - 10/5/2005 | 28 Aug 2024 | 01:54:10 | |
As Pearl Jam is preparing for another memorable weekend at Wrigley Field this week, we were put in a somewhat difficult spot as to what we should cover to get you guys excited for the show. The dilemma was that we had already covered all five Wrigley shows back in the summer of 2020, so what would we do? Well, there's a little show that took place in Chicago in 2005 that doesn't get discussed as much as it should. To raise money for Hurricane Katrina relief funds, Robert Plant and Pearl Jam combined forces to create an out of this world all-star show. Our friend Jason Brown was lucky enough to be there that night, and he'll join us to tell the stories of how it all went down.
To get into this show that took place in an intimate venue that has a capacity of less than 2,000, you had to make a $1,000 donation in order to get in. Jason made that donation, but you'll want to hear the wild story of how it happened. As legendary Led Zeppelin front man Robert Plant and his band The Strange Sensation opened up the night, the place was abuzz of whether the two rock 'n' roll titans would combine forces. Lo and behold, they did! The set they played with Plant was pretty remarkable, a combination of Given To Fly and Going To California as a wink wink to the song's influence kicked things off, followed by a few standard 1960s songs such as Little Sister and Money (That's What I Want). And then the band truly breaks out the Zeppelin heavy hitters - Fool In The Rain and Thank You. We'll have a very interesting discussion on Fool In The Rain featuring facts that may surprise you.
The Gear Guru also joins us for this show and while we spend some time talking Zeppelin with him, we'll dig into Save You, Porch and Rearviewmirror that may or may not have sounded like other Pearl Jam songs.

| Episode 298: Indianapolis, IN - 5/7/2010 | 21 Aug 2024 | 01:31:34 | |
With the new tour firing up this week in Montana, on Monday Pearl Jam will be heading to Indianapolis to take care of some unfinished business. Last year was set to be the band's first appearance in the city in 13 years until illness took over and caused a postponement. As they make good on their promise to return, this episode covers the last instance where they visited Indiana's capital back in 2010. We'll get you hyped up for the return of the tour and answer some of the questions that you guys posed to us via social media!
With a new show on the horizon, is it fair to say that Indianapolis doesn't have a Pearl Jam show that's considered an all-timer? While neighboring places like Detroit, Pittsburgh, St. Louis and Milwaukee have all laid claim to have hosted shows that people hold in very high regard, this year may be Indianapolis's year. 2010 is not by any means a bad show, but does it stand out among a very good slate from that US run that year? With the conditions not going the way of a typical concert, marred with a 90 minute delay due to thunderstorms, the band came out and played a very efficient set that took two hours and ten minutes to play an impressive 29 songs. Most of these songs are of the shorter, pop-rock variety to keep the mood of what may have been an anxious crowd after a rain delay lighthearted and fun. The positive outlook of the Backspacer era tunes helped that cause with songs like Unthought Known and Supersonic flourishing in this spotlight.
We'll spend our time talking about some big moments that include a fantastic rendition of Off He Goes, Force Of Nature, Wishlist and a nod to hometown heroes, the Jackson 5.

| Episode 290: Hyde Park - 7/8/2022 | 26 Jun 2024 | 01:43:01 | |
Pearl Jam loves to play in legendary venues. They've conquered the two oldest baseball parks in America, massive stadium venues in South America and plenty of the most famous arenas throughout the world. In London, the absolute cream of the crop when it comes to concert venues is Hyde Park. Back in 2020, Pearl Jam was scheduled to play Hyde Park alongside the Pixies, but after Covid cancelled all plans, they decided to add an extra date due to the demand. This episode covers the first night of a memorable two-night stay.
With massive screens erected for the 65k people to all witness this band from far and near, they came out firing right away. Better Man as an opener sets and amazing tone, Breath was a big surprise played early, Quick Escape featured a little Sex Pistols on the backend and a heartfelt dedication to a fan for Light Years really built up this show to feel as massive as the park. We'll talk about all of the big moments, as well as focusing on the ticket situation which is currently going happening for the show in London this coming weekend.

| Pearl Jam Stories w/ Richard Stuverud | 19 Dec 2022 | 00:42:03 | |
We had a very special guest attend our annual Live On 4 Legs Holiday Party this year - Mr. Richard Stuverud joined us to talk about his dream moment playing in Pearl Jam on the live stage. It was the largest crowds that he'd ever performed in front of. We got to have a very open conversation with him about the experience and all that's happened after, especially if his own solo career has changed since it went down.

| Episode 212: Frankfurt, DEU - 6/28/2022 | 14 Dec 2022 | 01:34:32 | |
After Pearl Jam had to cancel the final two shows of the west coast run in May, there was a bit of a concern as to the state of the band when the European tour started in June. There were a few shows at the beginning of the tour that felt like pretty average, safe setlists. So on the fifth night of the leg, the band opened up the vault a bit and led way to fans experiencing some deeper cuts in Frankfurt. Thanks everybody for voting this in as the episode representing the Europe tour as we finish off the year recapping some of the best from 2022!
A beautiful 100+ year old building with amazing acoustics is where the band set camp for their first show in the city in 30 years. As mentioned, the big crowd moments were spread all throughout this night, and one of the biggest opened the show in Inside Job. That made way for more fan service performances such as Last Exit (being played for the first time in 2022), Fatal and In My Tree. The crowd did their part to give love back to the band as they treated this show like a big celebration. We'll talk more about Gigaton songs, the Ukraine war and some of the songs that had an important run this year.
Question of the Week: When Pearl Jam goes with a set filled with songs more uncommon to hear than others, what songs make you gravitate to that set?

| 2022 Pearl Jam Fantasy Setlist Draft: Tournament Edition - Round 4 | 09 Dec 2022 | 01:16:26 | |
Welcome to round four of our first bracket in the 2022 Fantasy Setlist Draft! We now have three winners who made it to the finals, and we're looking for our final competitor here. For round 4, we go to battle with Mike, Kieran, Amy and Jeremy to see who has the setlist to garner the most votes!
If you missed the past three episodes, here is the basic foundation for the rules:
- Everyone is drafting a set in order of where they want their songs to be played. So opener would be the first pick, closer would be the last. Once a song is taken, it's no longer available to draft.
- Everyone gets a 24-song setlist to curate, 18 main set tracks and 6 encore. The song options for the draft are based solely off of the songs that were played during the 2022 tour this year. The only other restriction is within the first 5 songs that must consist of songs done in the sitdown section as they did on this tour. Drafter can choose to pick 5, or pick and Ed pre-set song to begin and pick 4.
- There's a lot of chaos happening! Especially So when we're done here, head to our social media pages to check out the voting, because YOU pick the winner!

| Episode 211: Fresno, CA - 5/16/2022 | 07 Dec 2022 | 01:48:35 | |
With a full year of touring finally under their belt, the last three episodes of 2022 will feature a few of the best from each leg. We start off with an interesting one that took place on the west coast leg emanating from Fresno, CA. The band was in a tough spot with Matt Cameron still being sidelined due to Covid, but sometimes unfortunate situations can breed special moments. With Josh Klinghoffer and Richard Stuverud still back behind the kit to help out, they also recruited their original drummer, Dave Krusen, to take the stage for ten (double meaning there) songs for the first time at a Pearl Jam show since 1991. This performance was like comfort food for the old time fan who loved Dave's groove off of Ten from the time they were a teenager. They played nearly every song from the record and gave Dave his moment to shine, something that he always deserved as a founder of the band.
Drummer drama isn't the only hurdle they had to jump in Fresno. Ed was dealing with a bout of food poisoning that he claimed to be one of the worst he's had aside from the infamous Polo Grounds show from 1995 where Neil Young replaced him in the set. Most of the songs prove to be a challenge for Ed vocally leading to some clunky performances in the beginning. But there is a certain movie character we compare him to once Krusen steps in and Ed suddenly seems much better. Can you guess who?
Question of the week we ask here is what songs do you think that Krusen could have been a good fit on if he had stuck around for later records.

| Episode 210: Detroit, MI - 10/16/2014 | 30 Nov 2022 | 01:40:52 | |
In this episode, we put a Stranglehold on Detroit Rock City as it's time to Kick Out The Jams on this Elephant of a show with tons of Raw Power that emanated from Detroit in 2014. A 32-song set with an excellent crowd that took place in the middle of their Heartland Tour during the Lightning Bolt era, this show was dominated by Motor City Easter eggs, local sports legends and some things you've never witnessed before. Big thanks to long-time Horizon Leg Patron, Fred Blood, for requesting this as he'll get to tell his story in the episode.
Though it was the show that preceded the wildly popular Moline No Code performance, people still talk about this one eight years later. There's no shadow hanging over it, and it's because it was an excellent mix of fan favorites, rarities and tons of memorable speeches. It was the sixth all-time performance of Black Red Yellow, the first instance where Release and Oceans opened up a show back-to-back and includes a highly emotional version of Light Years dedicated to Ikey Owens from Jack White's band who had recently passed away.
Listen in if you want to find out what happens when you challenge Chris Chelios to a fight, and discover the reason as to why Get Right hasn't been played in nearly 20 years. But stay until the end if you want to know which 2022 shows we'll be covering during the month of December!

Welcome to round three of our first bracket in the 2022 Fantasy Setlist Draft! We now have two winners who made it to the finals, but who will be the third to join them? For round 3, we go to battle with Jim, Chris, Mike and Jeff to see who has the setlist to garner the most votes!

| Episode 209: Sao Paulo, BRA - 12/3/2005 | 23 Nov 2022 | 01:29:50 | |
It's been quite a long time since we've covered something from down in South America, but thankfully we rectify our mistake in this episode. We're going down to São Paulo, Brazil to cover a show from Pearl Jam's first tour in the continent that took place back in 2005. This was a Patreon requested episode from Mike Radtke, and we'll tell his story about how he came across this when collecting official boots and why it's stuck with him ever since.
As it goes for shows in Brazil, the crowd is the big highlight. Now the crowd wasn't fully developed into the traditional Brazilian crowds where everybody sings along to the melody of a verse or chorus, but they certainly did their part to stand out. Crazy Mary is a full fledge sing-along, Black has a powerful moment that leaves Ed mesmerized, and during Daughter the crowd takes it open themselves to start an It's OK tag. All of this from the very active crowd, along with an incident dealt with by security during Alive.
In our question of the week, we asked our Facebook and Twitter followers how often they go back to South American bootlegs, we run through every answer before taking a dive into the set!

| Episode 208: Newcastle, AUS - 11/19/2006 | 16 Nov 2022 | 01:34:47 | |
In this episode we're talking about one of the wildest sets in Pearl Jam's catalog coming out of Newcastle, Australia in 2006. This is a one and done city at the point of this release, they'd never played Newcastle before then and haven't played there since. There are two key factors as to why they played there in the first place. For one, world champion surfer Mark Richards made a push for them to play, as well as a fan made petition featuring 2,277 signatures of the locals. Since this was such a unique situation, the band gave Richards the important duty to put pen to paper on this set, and boy oh boy he didn't disappoint.
If you like to listen and go to shows where Pearl Jam does something completely out of the ordinary, you may be sold on this show from the first note. For only the second time in history, Alive was played as the opener of the show. This is the true definition of the phrase 'anything can happen at a Pearl Jam show' and is why this show over time has been elevated to legendary status. We'll take about the memorable moments from this version and how the song gave this show a very strong momentum that stayed consistently high the entire night.
And how about the other rarities? For only the second time in their history, the band broke out Undone for a performance, one of five all-time. Leatherman, Down, Masters Of War, Crown Of Thorns and Alone are more surprises that pop in to make this show stand out, as well as Even Flow closing the first encore and Corduroy beginning the second encore. Lest we forget, there is an incredible 9-song run with no stops to begin this night. This show takes you on a ride, so take a listen and come celebrate it with us!

| Episode 289: Dublin, IRE - 10/26/1996 | 19 Jun 2024 | 01:28:58 | |
It's time for Pearl Jam to take the Dark Matter tour over to Europe! For the next month, we'll be doing the same thing as we did in May - focusing on past shows from locations they're about to embark on. First stop is Dublin, Ireland. It's been 14 years since the band has been back there, and strangely enough, they've only played there six times in total! This episode covers a show from Dublin in 1996 during the No Code tour that marks first of three appearances at The Point Theatre.
This episode will lean heavily on the coverage of No Code tracks as we get in depth with Hail, Hail, In My Tree, Mankind and Who You Are. Of course with this being a Jack Irons show, he'll dominate much of the conversation. We'll dig into why some of the Ten songs may not have been his specialty as we touch up on tracks such as Release, Even Flow and Alive. We'll also spend some time preparing you for the upcoming tour leg and try our hand at coming up with some ideas that could end up being huge surprises this month!

| Episode 207: Chicago, IL - 6/18/2003 | 09 Nov 2022 | 01:35:06 | |
There are many big cities that Pearl Jam has touched down in that have historically held some of their best shows of all-time. Chicago is near the top of that very important list. Being the birthplace of Eddie Vedder, every time they play there there is an emotional, homecoming aspect to the show that brings out the absolute best of the crowd. In 2003, with Ed's grandmother on hand to watch, they put together one of those big all-timer shows with a bootleg that still circulates on SiriusXM's Pearl Jam Radio.
Nearly every song from this show was a nearly flawless performance ranging everywhere from your crowd favorites, to brand new Riot Act songs, emotional moments and songs that soar. We'll talk about powerful performances from songs such as Release, Present Tense and Light Years, and we'll get to praise this Chicago crowd for their hard work on Better Man and Daughter featuring a notable tag. We'll also go over some listener answers talking about their favorite Chicago arena shows.
This episode is a Patreon request from Joey Goodsir who joins us to share his story of being a Gen Z Pearl Jam fan who found this bootleg on Apple Music where it molded his fandom to what it is today. He'll chat about some of his favorite performances and focus on the big moments that he'll speak fondly of.

| Episode 206: Hamburg, DEU - 11/4/1996 | 02 Nov 2022 | 01:30:52 | |
The night after playing a notable show in Berlin that was broadcast on FM stations all over the world, the band played a show in Hamburg and made allusions to it being better than the night before. The crowd of 7,000, who had been dying to see them ever since they last played in 1992, brought their a-game to the Sportshalle. Nearly every song had a major crowd response, clapping sections in spots where we usually don't hear them, especially for new songs that only had very few plays under their belt. It allowed the band to elevate their game and gave them a nice little spark of motivation that made the songs soar and excel.
This episode is very important to all of our German listeners out there, but it's also important to us as a podcast. We were able to make a few different setlist discoveries that some of the other fansites may have missed. Listen to check out what we found! We'll also hear from some of our European fans on Twitter about how Pearl Jam's popularity in 1996 mirrored what was happening to them in the United States.
Performances to look out for in this show: Last Exit, Who You Are, Corduroy, Whipping, Sometimes, Rearviewmirror, Not For You, Daughter and State Of Love And Trust.

| Episode 205: Boston, MA - 5/24/2006 | 27 Oct 2022 | 01:40:43 | |
Pearl Jam has such a rich history in the city of Boston and it's surrounding parts. Between there, plus Mansfield and Worcester, they've played the area a total of 24 times in their 32 year history. From the famous Ten Club show at The Orpheum in 1994, to the three night stay where they made the attempt to play every song in their catalog at Mansfield in 2003, to more recently when Fenway Park has become the crown jewel venue for them to play, there are a lot of absolute classics to take away from this region. In this episode, we won't be talking about a show that was considered a classic. If there was consideration for one, it would probably be the follow up night 2 show in 2006. But as a night 1 show that didn't have a set topping moment like Leash did the next night, it's easy to misplace it within that massive group previously mentioned. Is it time to get this show back on some people's minds?
We invite in our Patron, Joe Ierachi, who requested this show for us to do as an episode. He joins us here to tell his story featuring his memory from what was an unforgettable crowd, being at a show with his sister and friend who has since passed away, and a story about a fantasy football bet and how it pertains to Even Flow! It's Joe's pick, and he'll tell you why night 1 is more meaningful to him than night 2.
As mentioned, this crowd had an excellent night. We'll talk about their impact on songs such as Release, Love Boat Captain, Jeremy, Why Go and Crazy Mary. This is also a big night for Mike solos, but Stone has a big moment towards the end of the night as well when an orange shirt gets tossed on stage bearing his name.

| Episode 204: Milwaukee, WI - 10/20/2014 | 19 Oct 2022 | 01:56:35 | |
This is a show that I'm sure you're all familiar with. On a midwestern run in 2014, Pearl Jam did something that can be consider unprecedented. It all started in Moline, Illinois where for the first time, they played No Code in its entirety. Three days later, they decide to test out another album in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where Yield is played front to back. That's what we'll be covering today, the last full album show that we needed to cover in the modern era!
Returning to the show is the author of new Pearl Jam book, Long Road: Pearl Jam and the Soundtrack of a Generation, Steven Hyden. He'll talk about his experience from that night and what it was like to witness what went down in real time. However, this isn't the only artist that he's been in the crowd to see pull out a surprise full album show. It's a classic album by an all-time legend, find out which one during his interview!
As for the show itself, some might've been a little suspicious when they took the stage to Red Dot, but for others that heard rumors swirling round on Twitter, it was a sign that something big was set to go down. The band may have called for a bit of a misdirection early when they invited Cheap Trick's Rick Nielson on stage to do Baba O'Riley as the fifth song in, but once Brain Of J. hit it was off to the races. We'll talk about the entire Yield portion of the set, how they presented it rather close to the album renditions (no Wishlist tag, no Untitled before MFC), when and how the fans figured it out and we'll also come up with what the definitive performance from this set is.
| The Pearl Jam Backstage Experience Feat. Rich and Dermott Berg | 14 Oct 2022 | 01:01:03 | |
The chances of winning the lottery are nearly impossible, but most people make an attempt because the reward is so enticing. During the early part of the pandemic, Pearl Jam was helping to raise money for the All-In Challenge that battled food insecurity for kids that no longer had access to food due to schools being closed. Eddie had offered up a once in a life time experience to get to go to a show, head backstage, meet the band and help Ed pick the setlist. The band raised over a million dollars just from donations through their prize package, and the winners were Rich Berg and his son Dermott that got to live out this dream.
We invite Rich and Dermott onto the pod to discuss the story of how it all went down. From finding out that they were the winners, to heading in to Camden to meet Ed and get to join them on stage, we go through every gritty detail of the encounter. Find out what its like for Ed to prepare for every show from what type of pen Ed writes his setlists with to how many shirts Stone has in his dressing room!

| Episode 203: Dublin, IRE - 6/22/2010 | 12 Oct 2022 | 01:34:04 | |
This episode focuses on the last show to date that Pearl Jam has played in Ireland, taking us to Dublin for a performance from 2010. We thank our Patron, Clare O'Leary, for pitching a request from her one and only Pearl Jam show, and we'll tell her story on the episode. This show is widely known for one massive moment that takes precedent - the debut of a song called Of The Earth. Of The Earth is an epic, almost cinematic song that the band never seemed to figure out how to get it done in the studio. But the song's legacy mirrors something similar to Falling Down, a very rare track to be utilized solely for the live stage. We're gonna talk about why this song is so important, what makes this version special and why we may never see something like this again.
As a tour leg opener, the band came out with the songs they were most familiarized with. Aside from two debuts and Long Road, every song played in this set was played at either the first or second night of MSG, the last shows of the US leg. The other pretty notable debut on this night was Arms Aloft, a song from late era Joe Strummer project, The Mescaleros. We'll get to hear a story about Strummer's connection with Pearl Jam, and how before he passed, some big plans were in motion for a tour with the two bands.

| Episode 202: Austin City Limits - 10/4/2009 | 05 Oct 2022 | 01:33:51 | |
We're hitting the festival circuit in this episode as we take a Patron request from Dan Greenberg to cover the non-televised Austin City Limits show from 2009. This episode could potentially seem as a bit contentious as there were things that Randy and John weren't quite moved by. Mainly, the idea that this set felt like a time crunch in the way that they ran through it made it difficult to find an overall flow for this show. But there are no lack of good moments here! In 2009, the band went on a nice little run with Ben Harper inviting him out to play Red Mosquito on slide guitar almost every night. The performance and duel with McCready is a sight to behold, and something that we were itching to discuss on the pod for a long time. The other big moment? Inviting Perry Farrell out to sing Mountain Song. We'll get into a deep discussion about both Jane's Addiction and Perry's influence on the band.
And, Ashley Moon is in the room! You may remember from last month's Ottawa show that a woman who was sitting all the way in the back was invited to the front and got a lengthy and heartfelt dedication from the band. She writes in to the show to tell her story about the entire experience, with a part of the story connecting to our story from Erin Mackay last week.

| Long Road: Pearl Jam And The Soundtrack Of A Generation w/ Steven Hyden | 03 Oct 2022 | 01:05:54 | |
We welcome Steven Hyden back to the show to discuss his brand new book, Long Road: Pearl Jam and the Soundtrack of a Generation. We'll break down much of the subject matter brought up in the book such as writing with the intention to appeal to both the hardcore fan and casual fan, providing stories to give perspective on the band's history. For anyone that perceives Pearl Jam for the material they put out on Ten without context for the rest of their history, this will allow the reader to fully explain what this band's purpose is - something that we're no stranger to on this podcast - their live act.
Along with those themes, we discuss topics such as the strength of the fan community, what makes them always want to come back for more and Steven's own up and down history as a fan.

| Episode 201: Las Cruces, NM - 9/14/1995 | 28 Sep 2022 | 01:31:09 | |
Thanks to a request from our Patron Joe Kolbenschlag, we get to focus on a show from 1995 that occurred during a small window of shows in that September. This one is Las Cruces, New Mexico, which may not be one of the many jaw dropping shows from 1995, but is still damn good in it's own right. We get to talk about lots from the Vitalogy era - a random rare appearance from Satan's Bed, a fully explosive I Got Shit (ok, noticed how bad that was two seconds after typing it. It's staying in.) and a killer Immortality that reigned king of the era with it's incredible, jammy outro.
We'll also get to see a rare tag off of Daughter, The Who's "I'm One", a 10 minute Porch that ranges from bluesy to jammy all inclusive, and stunning versions of Corduroy, Not For You, Rearviewmirror and Blood.
Also in this episode we'll talk about some end of the tour topics featuring a few things we can't wait to hear on bootleg, and some of our favorite moments from our travels. We'll also hear a story from Erin Mackay who had the version of Other Side that was played in Quebec City dedicated to her for her brother. Caution: story has themes of mental illness and suicide involved. If you wish not to listen to that part, skip over it at 9 minutes in and jump to 13 minutes in.

| Episode 288: Hershey, PA - 7/12/2003 | 12 Jun 2024 | 01:32:45 | |
There are countless Pearl Jam shows where all you need to do is mention a location by name and the majority of Pearl Jam fans know exactly what you're talking about. For one lone night at a chocolate factory, when you mention this Hershey show from 2003, everyone knows that it's remembered for one thing - mosquito bites! No, this outdoor venue wasn't invested with mosquitos. The band was greeted by a flasher at this show who had taken her top off in order for the band to recognize her. But what she didn't realize was that they were coming off of one of the longest shows in their history in Mansfield, MA, meaning a six hour drive to Pennsylvania in the same night potentially left Ed a little sleep deprived. It leads to an all-time rant where he comments on the size of her breasts, a quote that has gone down as one of the most memorable things he's ever said.
With that being said, the band faced the challenge of following up the experiment by putting together a fun show with a lot of energy. They made up for two songs that were left out of the experiment in Last Exit and Glorified G, dug into some of the deeper Riot Act cuts with Help Help and one of the last versions of Get Right to date, and we get a random appearance of a harmonica on... State Of Love And Trust? Yeah, you read that right. Also, we'll uncover the true story about a friend of Stone's who guested on Rockin In The Free World at this show. Where is he now? The answer may surprise you... really surprise you.
Javier makes his return in this episode and will talk about the unique tuning of Daughter, and how that helps transforms the song to make it sound acoustic, even on an electric guitar.

| Episode 200: Sea.Hear.Now Festival - 9/18/2021 | 22 Sep 2022 | 02:14:02 | |
This is our 200th episode! After four years of this podcast journey, we've reached a wonderful milestone that we'd like to celebrate with you all, and we're going to do that by covering the show that (finally) introduced us into the Gigaton era from the Sea.Hear.Now festival shortly after it's one-year anniversary.
We'll talk a lot about the podcast milestone and what it means to us and kind of tie a nice bow on it surrounding what happened at this show, which was the first show that we attending representing the pod when fully established. But it's also about everything that led up to that weekend too. The lingering postponements carried over from 2020 left everyone asking a lot of questions - what kind of band would this be? How would the Gigaton songs translate live? What older songs will still be in the mix? The answers we received were a gateway into a new era of Pearl Jam where setlists would be constructed unlike anything we've seen before.
We'll have a lot of discussion on the Gigaton songs, which will be tied into some things we've heard on this more recent tour run. But there are many memorable performances from this night including Present Tense, Wishlist with a Waiting On A Friend tag, Red Mosquito featuring Danny Clinch on harmonica, Better Man with a People Have The Power tag and a cover of Springsteen's My City Of Ruins.

| Episode 199: Atlanta, GA - 9/1/1998 | 14 Sep 2022 | 01:55:57 | |
Believe it or not, this is episode 199! We're one away from our 200th episode! So for this one we are going to celebrate the birthday of one John Farrar by going back in time all the way to the first show he ever attended back in 1998 on the Yield tour. To everyone's surprise, yes... it's an Atlanta show. John has a good story as he'll talk about Pearl Jam being in sort of the downswing of his life after joining a punk band and moving on to other influences. Going to this show was essentially a way for him to say that he went and got to witness it, but it wouldn't be for another 14 years that he'd see them again.
This show marked some semi-notable moments for the Yield album which, as we'll discuss, did not give enough love to it's deeper cuts on this tour. A soundcheck was played before this show that would have certainly been the stuff of legends had we owned a recording. They played Low Light, a song that they never played on this tour, Parting Ways, which was two years away from being on an album, Dead Man with drums and a slowed down version of Blood. The band opted to play No Way for only the 2nd time out of 12 overall in the 24 years since thanks to a guy who kept bringing a sign to every show. They also tagged All Those Yesterdays off of Daughter which saw just a marginal amount more of playing time. It's a small sample size, but this show incorporated a side of Yield that went untouched for most of the early time that Cameron was in this band.
Oh yeah, there's also the Yeastie Girlz! We'll talk about how Ed's extremely obscure rap was something that John actually knew about and made him super excited both at the show, and during the episode.

| Episode 198: Hamilton, ONT, CA - 9/13/2005 | 07 Sep 2022 | 01:38:36 | |
It's the final week of tour preparation as Pearl Jam finishes up the last of the Canadian dates, and I guess because the 2022 Hamilton show took place a day before this was released, it's not quite a part of the preparation? But as you'll hear many times in this spectacular Hamilton show from 2005, there is a lot to celebrate with this one.
We couldn't do another Canadian show and not talk about 2005. This was the first time that the band got to experience Canada from end to end, hitting up all of the big towns like Toronto and Montreal, but also making pit stops in places like Thunder Bay, Kitchener and Halifax. The band expresses their admiration for the country, and they do it by raising a toast nearly every time that Ed speaks. It'll be a running theme that all culminates in Go sounding like he did one too many.
This setlist on paper is mind blowing, and on stage it absolutely meets that expectation. We get the very rare appearance of Porch as the opening song in the set that kicks off some of the craziness, then an injection of Lost Dogs such as Sad and U. But there are so many show stealers in this that it's hard to pick just one from Present Tense, Untitled/MFC, Harvest Moon and a hybrid of the normal and alternative takes from In My Tree.

| Episode 197: Quebec City, QC, CA - 5/5/2016 | 31 Aug 2022 | 01:33:25 | |
Ahh, we're finally at tour week! Quebec City is going to kick off the September run, and that's exactly what we've decided to cover this week - the show from the last time that they were there in 2016. In preparation of the Toronto Binaural album show, they ended up playing four songs off of that record, and a nice array of rarities alongside them as well. The Binaural representation featured Of The Girl, God's Dice, Light Years and Nothing As It Seems, while the other rare stuff spliced in included Pilate, I'm Open, Thumbing My Way and Wash.
But this show has a pretty unforgettable moment that exceeds everything above. Ed invites a ten-year old kid named Noah onto the stage to play Sad after seeing a video of him and his father playing it. It's one of those once in a lifetime moments, something that every kid dreams of, but is nearly an impossibility to actually happen. Pearl Jam made it possible, and we'll talk all about it in this episode!

We have opened up the vault for all listeners for anyone who has wanted to join our Patreon, but has not pulled the trigger yet. This is exactly what's in store. To join for as low as $1 a month, head over to patreon.com/liveon4legs, or the Patreon app, or Liveon4legs.com and click the orange 'become a Patron' button to subscribe and enjoy the extra content! There's plenty to go around!
It's time to emancipate! In our 10th installment of our live song evolution series we'll discuss the 11th most played song in the band's catalog - Rearviewmirror! We'll talk about this song's humble origins, going from a little random jingle that Ed has in his pocket for some time to being Ed's first major musical writing contribution to the band, and it being a pivotal track for Vs. The live evolution is interesting, because of course it all begins with Dave A. (who infamously throws his sticks at the end of the recording) and shows some struggle in the very early stages before this song revs its engine and finds its power. We'll talk in thorough detail about the Atlanta 94 and SNL versions that are among the best, the spacey and lengthy bridges that were started with Jack and polished by Matt, and an absolutely epic version from Buenos Aires in 2005 that takes the song in so many different directions. Don't give thanks or apologize, just enjoy the episode!
| Episode 196: Denver, CO - 3/7/1994 | 24 Aug 2022 | 01:31:31 | |
The final show of the 2022 (unless additional shows are added later) will emanate from Denver, CO, the same place where they closed out a tour the last time they were there in 2014. This episode will focus on being in Denver at the beginning of a tour, and that happened by in 1994. The third show of a three night stint in 1993 playing CU Boulder was canceled due to security issues. So vowing to never play the university again and wanting to make it up to those kids who missed out, the band played two shows in Denver to kick off the 1994 run.
Both nights were filled with surprises, mostly involving never before heard Vitalogy songs. As night one featured the Spin The Black Circle live debut, we're going to talk about the debut of Not For You that took place on night 2. This was the beginning of a relationship with the song that would define a lot of what they were going through in 1994 and 1995. We'll discuss it's origin and inspiration for writing it. We'll also cover the live debut of Street Fighting Man, a W.M.A. tag off of Porch, a Rats tag off of Daughter, and not one, but TWO band members losing their pants!

| Hallucinogenic Recipe Episode 4 - Orpheum Theater | 22 Aug 2022 | 01:01:58 | |
This episode was released back in April on Patreon, but due to ignorance, I never ended up putting this on the main platform. So now's the time!
Welcome to another edition of Hallucinogenic Recipe!
Patrick and Brian are back and invite guest and Patron Dan Leehr into the conversation to talk about the background of the Orpheum Theater‘s release on both bootleg and video. This is a fascinating conversation, Dan was vital in the digitizing process of the video you’ve mostly likely seen on YouTube.
He’ll talk about how he got access to this show and the whole process of putting it together. If you ever wanted to know how the sausage was made in the bootlegging world, this is fantastic insight!
| Episode 195: St. Louis, MO - 10/3/2014 | 17 Aug 2022 | 01:31:09 | |
Let's focus on more September show locations for this episode! In this one, we're gonna discuss a St. Louis show that happened on the 2014 US tour leg thanks to a Patreon requested episode from David Ruthman. This show's story centers around a few themes. This night happened to be the same night that the playoffs started for the Cardinals that year, so we receive many scoreboard updates and references. We also get to see a lot of dedications and mentions of fans who made it out to see them, some against all odds. That will bring us into a good conversation about how the band's propensity to acknowledge fans who are going through a rough patch draws this community closer together.
It being a Lightning Bolt tour show, we'll get a few songs from the record, some heavily played and others rarely. It's mostly a greatest hits set with a few nice surprises including the live debut of Imagine, great versions of Not For You, Footsteps, Given To Fly, Better Man and a chilling version of Daughter performed in the wake of Michael Brown's death in Ferguson, MO.

| Episode 194: Camden, NJ - 5/28/2006 | 10 Aug 2022 | 01:28:39 | |
With September right around the corner, we're back to covering cities that Pearl Jam will be visiting on tour this year! First stop is Camden, a city that the band had never planned to be in back in 2020, but it just so happens to be on of the most frequent venues that Pearl Jam has ever played. This show we're covering is the second night of the two show run in 2006.
Lots of good performances to discuss here, from the brand new at the time Avocado tracks, Gone and Severed Hand are two that stand out from this one. Most of this set features songs with blazing speed such as Save You, Grievance and Whipping, but on the flip side the first encore was a complete change of pace bringing in the more emotional tracks such as Man Of The Hour, Black and the second all-time performance of Parachutes. But this show we'll also have a big finish on encore 2 as well!
Tune in to check out the set, some discussion on Ed singing with The Strokes and a New Jersey tailgate fit for kings!

| Episode 287: Salt Lake City, UT - 11/1/1995 | 05 Jun 2024 | 01:33:49 | |
As the west coast leg of the Dark Matter tour has come to a close, now is a great opportunity for us to dig into a few great Pearl Jam shows without covering upcoming tour locations. That takes us to November of 1995. A five-show run featuring shows that were postponed from earlier in the tour year that have gone down in history as some of the best of the era. After being forced to postpone a June Salt Lake City show due to weather conditions, the promise Ed had made was that the band would come back and play twice as long. Which means they came back and played two shows instead of one for their make up. This run will always be most known as hosting the live debuts for both Red Mosquito and Brain Of J, the former of which we'll talk about in this episode.
Ed would make a quip on night two that it was like the crowd's parents came to night one. While this show may not reach the excitement of night two, that quote has given this show an undeserved stigma that we're out to prove is inaccurate. Some great performances go down on this night including ones from Corduroy, Deep, RVM, Immortality and what amounts to probably the longest version of Blood in the catalog. We'll also dig into an improv titled Seven Years Waiting and a Porch closer that got a little bit weird in the solo.
We're also only a week out from the Seattle shows, so we'll chat about the experience and some of the best performances that held up from that night.

| Pearl Jam 2022 Mid-Tour Analysis with Jonathan Cohen | 08 Aug 2022 | 00:51:45 | |
We're now approaching act three of Pearl Jam's slate of shows for the 2022 tour. There has been discussion about all that has happened - the great performances, the surprises and the unfortunate cancelations, but in this episode, we get the privilege to speak with Variety and SPIN contributor, as well as the author of PJ20, Jonathan Cohen. Cohen has had his eye on the band throughout the year giving him a unique perspective on the band's approach. We speak to him about the ins and outs of it all, as well as get a little information on what to possibly expect in September, as well as a little bit of info on how Pearl Jam has been proceeding with the new album they've been working in studio on. | Episode 193: Saskatoon, SK, CA - 9/19/2011 | 03 Aug 2022 | 01:35:17
Moosejaw, Broadview, Moosamin too! We're running back to Saskatoon! After covering the 2005 show in Saskatchewan over a year and a half ago, just like The Guess Who, we're running back. This time thanks to a request from long time Patron, Danielle Tatlow, who lives up near those parts in a town of 350. We'll tell her story on this episode to prep you for the last show they've played up in these parts up north. While this song has a great mix of album representation and rare songs such as God's Dice, In My Tree, Untitled/MFC, In The Moonlight and more, it's primarily remembered for one big moment. In 2005, the band did a rough take on Running Back To Saskatoon by The Guess Who, and while the results pleased the locals, it did not go over smoothly. Take two, and yet again the rendition is filled with flubs and forgotten lyrics. Ed doesn't like how the performance went, so he invites a fan on stage to help them sing it and finally, the song gets played properly.
We'll also talk about the 2011 tour and how it sometimes gets lost in the mix within the other tour years, especially 2005 which is a very similar, albeit longer Canadian leg.

| Episode 192: Telluride, CO - 7/9/2016 | 27 Jul 2022 | 01:44:46 | |
Red Rocks, Mansfield, Santa Barbara, The Gorge, Telluride... and now Amsterdam. These six shows have something special in common that no other Pearl Jam show can claim. The band walks out and takes a seat to start the show, warming up with a collection of slower tracks and easing into a set more than the typical night. In the beautiful, mountainous evening sky up in a ski resort town in Colorado, the band took their seats in a fantastic mood thanks to these surroundings and started the night with 10 tracks played acoustically.
All of the shows mentioned above have a few things in common. They've been to go to spot for the band to break out debuts, rarities or songs that went completely into hiding. Take Angel for example. A Dave Abbruzzese song that was released as an A-side on the 1994 fan club Xmas Singles that had only been played four prior times in their history. Not once since 1994. It took them a record setting 699 times in between shows before they'd play it again at this show! Also, for all of the Into The Wild fans, Society was debuted directly after Angel and it was one of two performances of it in their history. Later in the show, we'd receive another Xmas Single rarity from 2008, Santa Cruz, which lyrics were changed to fit their current location.
A great show with lots of memorable speeches from Ed, and a cameo from a young woman standing stage side who wanted her 15 second of fame. Joining us to tell her stories is Horizon Leg Patron Jenni Gee!

| Episode 191: Heineken Open'er Festival, Gdynia, POL - 7/1/2010 | 20 Jul 2022 | 01:30:15 | |
After a memorable show in Krakow on the 2022 European tour, we're set to go back to Poland to cover the Heineken Open'er Festival show from 2010. The show was a day after the Berlin show from that year, which had a touching tribute to the Roskilde victims being the 10th anniversary of the tragedy. That theme was on their minds at this show as Ed has to deal with some early crowd rambunctiousness that he had nearly no patience for.
This was in the middle of touring for Backspacer, so we'll be able to catch up on songs from that album for the first time in about 6 months. This is including The Fixer, where we try to make sense of the recent infatuation that blew us away after it was crossed off a setlist earlier in this tour. Great versions of Hail, Hail, Even Flow, Amongst The Waves and Rearviewmirror are all discussed, but perhaps most importantly, we get a version of Just Breathe with bass!
Joining us to tell her story is our Patron Anita Stelmasiuk who had a long journey before making it to her first show. Get to hear her stories about joining the Ten Club at an early age, the challenges she faced in order to get to this show and some of the moments that impacted her that night.

| Episode 190: Mudfest, Gimli, MB, CAN - 8/14/1993 | 13 Jul 2022 | 01:33:28 | |
This show has been on our radar for quite a while and we're happy to finally get it out to you in this episode! In the summer of 1993 prior to the release of Vs., Pearl Jam was doing some touring opening up for U2 and Neil Young getting at most around 45-60 minutes of set time. That was until they hit the middle of the prairies in Manitoba, Canada to headline Sunfest. However, nobody knows this show under that name. This show has properly been dubbed, Mudfest. A rainy evening up in Gimli caused for slippery conditions and a misty drizzle that followed the band around the whole night. But the legend of the show doesn't end there. We got a racous, inebriated Eddie Vedder at his absolute best firing up the crowd and letting his voice growl and shred the entire night. The early performances of six Vs. songs are eye opening, especially Go, Animal and Indifference, which had the same show closing vibe that we are known to see nowadays.
Come for the mud, stay for the belittling of SetlistFm.

| Episode 189: Lollapalooza Mountain View, CA - 7/19/1992 | 06 Jul 2022 | 00:56:25 | |
In this month we're going to be touching up on some of Pearl Jam's past festival dates, starting with the first touring festival that helped make the band at Lollapalooza in 1992. Two shows at the Shoreline Amphitheater kicked off this tour, and we're gonna cover the second night because it's the only one that has a bootleg attached. We'll share a clip from our Horizon Profile episode with Amy Wynn, who was at the first night of the two-day kick-off. We'll also get to talk about an entertaining interview that exists on the internet featuring Stone and Jeff on MTV's 120 Minutes. They discuss how they met, how they felt about touring at the time, and a word that you can say on TV that absolutely caught the attention of Stone. That's probably the big moment to tune in for!

| Episode 188: Fargo, ND - 6/15/2003 | 29 Jun 2022 | 01:38:57 | |
Is this gonna be a good episode? You're darned tootin! With many Cohn Brothers movie quotes aside, this is our final episode of our OTOTO states month emanating from Fargo, North Dakota in 2003. This is the first instance in 188 official episodes and 224 shows in total that we've covered that we get to talk about Arc. Arc is one of their more fascinating songs due to the weight that it holds being the tribute written for the Roskilde victims. The band would go on to play this nine times, the same number of victims from the tragedy, and none of the official bootlegs include any performance of this. We'll get into the unique presentation that it had live and how impactful it was, even as a show opener, in it's short stay that year.
Another big point of conversation from this one is a version of In My Tree being played for the first time in 69 shows. This song having not been played for that long mixed in with an illness from Ed meant it was never going to be as crisp of a version that we would've heard in 1996. This became a little bit of an improv where the lyrics and music weren't exactly linear. Ed has some things on his mind and comes up with some beautiful improved lyrics for the end. We'll talk about how this set the tone for other versions of In My Tree that year, especially the version that everyone remembers from Madison Square Garden.
All this and good discussion on 1/2 Full, I Am Mine, Better Man, Thumbing My Way, Rearviewmirror, I Am A Patriot and Crazy Mary.

| Episode 187: Boise, ID - 11/3/2000 | 22 Jun 2022 | 01:37:05 | |
This episode is about promises. Promises broken, promises kept, and promises broken yet again. The band has had a bit of a rocky relationship with Idaho's state capital, and while this episode will focus on all of the above, it will mainly be dedicated to the positive memories. If you go back to the beginning of their relationship, it began with disappointment as Pearl Jam had to cancel a date on the 1995 Vitalogy tour. They would finally set foot there in 2000 experiencing an unforgettable show that we'll go into in full detail here. As Ed states multiple times during this show, it was an amazing crowd and one that he promised to return to. Alas, as sequel was initially planned for the Riot Act tour in 2003, but due to circumstances that we aren't quite sure of, they had to cancel this show as well. The band has never been back to Idaho, and that's why it's a part of our OTOTO States Series!
This show was given the high honor of being an "apeman" bootleg, which meant it was one of 18 shows in 2000 that the band thought very highly of. It's easy to tell why. The energy is palpable at this show, the band played extremely tight on a consistent high-tempo pace and the crowd ate it up the whole way. We'll talk about great renditions of Go, Grievance, Small Town, Better Man with the Romanza intro, Daughter, Rearviewmirror and Parting Ways. How high will this one be rated? You may want to tune in to find out!

| Episode 186: Rapid City, SD - 6/24/1998 | 15 Jun 2022 | 01:33:27 | |
Our fourth OTOTO state this month has us heading to South Dakota early on the first leg of the Yield run. It was only the sixth appearance that Matt Cameron was making for the band at the time as a replacement drummer. Of course, no lack of confidence with playing this hefty catalog. Cameron throws in all of his patented flourishes and unmatched speed to create performances that at the time was a major change with some of these songs that have become major staples of the Pearl Jam set. We'll run through it all and focus on some of the moments that Matt made special.
Speaking of special, this show features the debut of a grouping of songs that have become a rare instance that people chase from show to show. This night in South Dakota was the first time that they ever performed the "man trilogy" songs back-to-back-to-back. We'll dig into how special this trio has become and how the grouping elevated Nothing Man to become one of the best singalongs in their catalog.
We'll also preview the upcoming European tour, and find a way to get off topic a bit with in reference to wedding songs.

| Episode 185: Augusta, ME - 9/26/1996 | 08 Jun 2022 | 01:29:11 | |
Let's dive into another episode in our OTOTO States Month Series! In 1996, Pearl Jam was still dealing with their Ticketmaster strike, so they found that options for venues on the east coast were limited. Big cities such as Philadelphia and Boston couldn't provide a proper place for the band to play without the usage of Ticketmaster, so they had to get creative in finding locations to play. One spot happened to be Augusta, Maine - a state they hadn't played before nor after. While it may seem as though this is just another bump on the road, something special happened in Maine's capital that the fans who were there still talk about today.
Leaving his cozy vacation spot on the Mediterranean, Dennis Rodman took a flight out to the America's north most state to witness a band and a front man that meant the world to him. Rodman and Vedder had become friendly around that time. Ed was seen joining Dennis in the locker room during the Chicago Bulls 1996 Championship win, and there's a story passed around that they sporadically took a flight from Seattle to Vegas in order to go see Jane's Addiction. Rodman got to celebrate with the band on stage for the first of many times throughout the years. We'll talk about Ed's relationship with Rodman as well as the visual of Ed taking a ride on the 6'7" basketball player's shoulders during Alive.
Also in this episode, we'll talk about two moments that take place during this show that weren't definitive of the 1996 era, but have been cornerstones of Pearl Jam's live set in the past decade.

| Episode 286: Groundwork Benefit Concert - 10/22/2001 | 29 May 2024 | 01:34:46 | |
We've made it near the end of the first leg of the Dark Matter tour! With the last stop in Seattle happening as this episode airs, we thought it would obviously be appropriate to cover a show that took place in Pearl Jam's hometown. Since we've covered many of the well known Seattle shows in past episodes (check out the archive to listen, lots of good ones!) we're turning to a benefit show from 2001 in which the band didn't go out and tour on. The Groundwork Benefit was put together to help the Food and Agriculture Organization to solve world hunger. This night featured acts like Alanis Morrisette and R.E.M. as the headliners alongside Pearl Jam.
It's only a 10-song set, and since it's still in the shadow of Binaural, the album has a heavy presence at this show. No Ten or Vs. songs were played, but we do get an early version of a Riot Act song over a year before the album release. We'll talk about John Lennon song Gimme Some Truth and how Ed initially wanted to play that during the Tribute To Heroes performance after 9/11, but it became a staple of Pearl Jam's touring circuit during the Iraq War. But the song that's going to resonate the most is a rare closing set performance of Long Road. It's a ten minute version that features Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, the nephew of Nusrat who recorded a version of Long Road with Ed for the Dead Man Walking soundtrack. One of the most heartfelt versions of Long Road that you'll ever hear.
Along with that, we'll talk about Ed making a guest appearance during R.E.M.'s set to sing People Have The Power and It's The End Of The World As We Know It, and also a little bit of the Athens alternative legends teasing Better Man. Javier joins in for this one, and we'll spend a lot of time talking about our upcoming trip to see the band in Seattle!
Just to note, in this episode I may have made some small but rare mistakes regarding facts that I do apologize for. We'll also mention the audio from the YouTube video mixing the guitars really low, but the bootleg that we play in the episode sounds completely normal. A lot of 4am bedtimes in the last month, I'm sure you all understand!

| Episode 184: Casper, WY - 6/16/1995 | 01 Jun 2022 | 01:30:38 | |
For the entire month of June, we are digging in to a collection of shows that may have gotten lost throughout the shuffle over the years. Why? Because it is the only time that Pearl Jam had ever played in the states we're covering. First up is Casper, Wyoming. Not at all a hot bed for music fans. But Pearl Jam on their quest to reject Ticketmaster venues had a limited amount of options to turn to. With the original show being set up in Boise, Idaho, another OTOTO state, Wyoming ended up being the home to the kick off of an incredibly memorable 1995 tour.
We'll have some fun with this one. On the YouTube video for this show, there is a section where a guy named James Lane is seen in a van and explains that after the show they're going to be broadcasting a show on pirate radio. This of course is Monkeywrench Radio, something that Ed broadcasted for the entirety of the 1995 tour on the road. We'll talk about that era and why this caused a divide within the band. We'll also get into some of the performances including the live debut of Long Road, Corduroy, Why Go, Not For You, Immortality and Blood.

| Episode 183: Burlington, VT - 11/2/1991 | 30 May 2022 | 00:42:41 | |
Surprise! It’s a bonus episode to kick off a new series for June, we’re covering shows in states that Pearl Jam has only played one time, one time only. Randy gets a break for this one, as John is joined by Hallucinogenic Recipe host Brian Horwitz to discuss the band’s only show in Vermont, Burlington 11/2/91. Brian talks about going to college in Vermont in the mid-90’s and some shows he attended in this historical venue. The show itself is only 7 songs, but there’s plenty to talk about, including a Wash opener and all of the side A Ten rockers. Stick around to find out what gift Eddie brought for the crowd!

| Episode 182: Missoula, MT- 8/29/2005 | 27 May 2022 | 01:35:29 | |
To finish our Vault series, we turn to the final Vault on our list - the Missoula 2005 show. This comes at an unfortunately opportune time a week after Jeff tested positive for Covid-19 forcing Pearl Jam to cancel the rest of their tour, but also we take the time to honor him and send our best wishes while covering a show in his home state. This was the first of a few Montana shows that doubled up as a campaign for US Senator John Tester, who in 2005 was looking to win the seat.
This was the first show of the 2005 tour featuring legs in Canada and South America, so it could be seen as kind of a tune up in a way. But this was also a good indicator for some things that would happen during that tour year. There were some rarities broken out on this night that hadn't been played since the mid-90's. Bee Girl made an appearance for the first time since 1994 thanks to Jeff's song writing prowess on it, and Black, Red, Yellow is played for the first time since 1996 thanks to Phil Jackson being in the crowd. This show also gets highly political with the climax happening in Daughter getting some aggression out against Fox News.
