Satyajit Ray made a film Shatranj Ke Khiladi based on a short story by Munshi Premchand in 1977. Amrit Rai the son of Munshi Premchand has got numerous stories of that era. Here he was talking some of them in his very characteristic style.

Amrit Rai (3 September 1921 – 14 August 1996) was an Indian writer, poet, translator and biographer in both the Hindi and Urdu styles of the Hindustani language. He was the son of Munshi Premchand, a pioneer of modern Urdu literature and of Hindi literature. A prolific writer, Rai made his literary debut with novel Beej in 1952 and went on to write an acclaimed biography of his father, Premchand, Kalam ka Sipahi (1970), which later won him the Sahitya Akademi award for 1963.

He also co-edited Chitthi Patri (1962), a two-volume book on the letters of Premchand along with his biographer, Madan Gopal. In 1982, he donated a collection of his father's 236 letters to the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) at Teen Murti House, Delhi. His A House Divided is an influential account of how the shared Hindi/Hindvī linguistic tradition became differentiated into Modern Standard Hindi and Urdu.

Rai died in Allahabad, in August 1996 at the age of 75. He had suffered a paralytic stroke earlier in March.

सुबह-सुबह

बच्चे काम पर जा रहे हैं

हमारे समय की सबसे भयानक पंक्ति है यह

भयानक है इसे विवरण की तरह लिखा जाना

लिखा जाना चाहिए इसे सवाल की तरह

काम पर क्यों जा रहे हैं बच्चे?

क्या अंतरिक्ष में गिर गई हैं सारी गेंदें

क्या दीमकों ने खा लिया है

सारी रंग-बिरंगी किताबों को

क्या काले पहाड़ के नीचे दब गए हैं सारे खिलौने

क्या किसी भूकंप में ढह गई हैं

सारे मदरसों की इमारतें

क्या सारे मैदान, सारे बग़ीचे और घरों के आँगन

तो फिर बचा ही क्या है इस दुनिया में?

इस तरह जो था उसे मैंने

जी भरकर प्यार किया

और जो नहीं था

उसका इंतज़ार किया।

मैंने इंतज़ार किया–

अब कोई बच्चा

भूखा रहकर स्कूल नहीं जायेगा

अब कोई छत बारिश में

नहीं टपकेगी।

अब कोई आदमी कपड़ों की लाचारी में

अपना नंगा चेहरा नहीं पहनेगा

अब कोई दवा के अभाव में

घुट-घुटकर नहीं मरेगा

अब कोई किसी की रोटी नहीं छीनेगा

कोई किसी को नंगा नहीं करेगा

अब यह ज़मीन अपनी है

आसमान अपना है

जैसा पहले हुआ करता था…

सूर्य,हमारा सपना है

मैं इन्तजा़र करता रहा..

इन्तजा़र करता रहा…

इन्तजा़र करता रहा…

जनतन्त्र,त्याग,स्वतन्त्रता…

संस्कृति,शान्ति,मनुष्यता…

ये सारे शब्द थे

सुनहरे वादे थे

खुशफ़हम इरादे थे

सुन्दर थे

मौलिक थे

मुखर थे

मैं सुनता रहा…

सुनता रहा…

सुनता रहा…

मतदान होते रहे

मैं अपनी सम्मोहित बुद्धि के नीचे

उसी लोकनायक को

बार-बार चुनता रहा

जिसके पास हर शंका और

हर सवाल का

एक ही जवाब था

यानी कि कोट के बटन-होल में

महकता हुआ एक फूल

गुलाब का।

वह हमें विश्वशान्ति के और पंचशील के सूत्र

समझाता रहा। मैं खुद को

समझाता रहा-’जो मैं चाहता हूँ-

वही होगा। होगा-आज नहीं तो कल

मगर सब कुछ सही होगा।

मैं अपनी सम्मोहित बुद्धि के नीचे

उसी लोकनायक को

बार-बार चुनता रहा

जिसके पास हर शंका और

हर सवाल का

एक ही जवाब था

यानी कि कोट के बटन-होल में

महकता हुआ एक फूल

गुलाब की भीड़ बढ़ती रही।

चौराहे चौड़े होते रहे।

लोग अपने-अपने हिस्से का अनाज

खाकर-निरापद भाव से

बच्चे जनते रहे।

योजनायेँ चलती रहीं

बन्दूकों के कारखानों में

जूते बनते रहे।

और जब कभी मौसम

उतार पर होता था।

हमारा संशय

हमें कोंचता था।

हम उत्तेजित होकर

पूछते थे

यह क्या है?

ऐसा क्यों है?

फिर बहसें होतीं थीं

शब्दों के जंगल में

हम एक-दूसरे को काटते थे

भाषा की खाई को

जुबान से कम जूतों से

ज्यादा पाटते थे

कभी वह हारता रहा…

कभी हम जीतते रहे…

इसी तरह नोक-झोंक चलती रही

दिन बीतते रहे…

मगर एक दिन मैं स्तब्ध रह गया।

मेरा सारा धीरज

युद्ध की आग से पिघलती हुयी बर्फ में

बह गया।

मैंने देखा कि मैदानों में

नदियों की जगह

मरे हुये साँपों की केंचुलें बिछी हैं

पेड़-टूटे हुये रडार की तरह खड़े हैं

दूर-दूर तक

कोई मौसम नहीं है

लोग-

घरों के भीतर नंगे हो गये हैं

और बाहर मुर्दे पड़े हैं

विधवायें तमगा लूट रहीं हैं

सधवायें मंगल गा रहीं हैं

वन-महोत्सव से लौटी हुई कार्यप्रणालियाँ

अकाल का लंगर चला रही हैं

जगह-जगह तख्तियाँ लटक रहीं हैं-

‘यह श्मशान है,यहाँ की तश्वीर लेना

सख्त मना है।’

क्योंकि शब्द और स्वाद के बीच

अपनी भूख को ज़िन्दा रखना

जीभ और जाँघ के स्थानिक भूगोल की

वाजिब मजबूरी है।

फिर भी उस उजाड़ में

कहीं-कहीं घास का हरा कोना

कितना डरावना है

मैंने अचरज से देखा कि दुनिया का

सबसे बड़ा बौद्ध- मठ

बारूद का सबसे बड़ा गोदाम है

अखबार के मटमैले हासिये पर

लेटे हुये ,एक तटस्थ और कोढ़ी देवता का

शांतिवाद ,नाम है

यह मेरा देश है…

यह मेरा देश है…

हिमालय से लेकर हिंद महासागर तक

फैला हुआ

जली हुई मिट्टी का ढेर है

जहाँ हर तीसरी जुबान का मतलब-

नफ़रत है।

साज़िश है।

अन्धेर है।

यह मेरा देश है

और यह मेरे देश की जनता है

जनता क्या है?

एक शब्द…सिर्फ एक शब्द है:

कुहरा,कीचड़ और कांच से

बना हुआ…

एक भेड़ है

जो दूसरों की ठण्ड के लिये

अपनी पीठ पर

ऊन की फसल ढो रही है।

जनता क्या है?

एक शब्द…

सिर्फ एक शब्द है

कुहरा,कीचड़ और कांच से

बना हुआ…

एक भेड़ है

जो दूसरों की ठण्ड के लिये

अपनी पीठ पर

ऊन की फसल ढो रही है

एक पेड़ है

जो ढलान पर

हर आती-जाती हवा की जुबान में

हाँऽऽ..हाँऽऽ करता है

क्योंकि अपनी हरियाली से

डरता है।

गाँवों में गन्दे पनालों से लेकर

शहर के शिवालों तक फैली हुई

‘कथाकलि’ की अंमूर्त मुद्रा है

यह जनता…

उसकी श्रद्धा अटूट है

उसको समझा दिया गया है कि यहाँ

ऐसा जनतन्त्र है जिसमें

घोड़े और घास को

हर तरफ कुआँ है

हर तरफ खाई है

यहाँ,सिर्फ ,वह आदमी,देश के करीब है

जो या तो मूर्ख है

या फिर गरीब है...

• 1977 में आई गोधूलि और 1984 में आई उत्सव, जैसी फिल्मों में राम गोपाल बजाज ने बतौर सहायक निर्देशक काम किया।
• मासूम, चांदनी, परजानिया और मिर्च मसाला जैसी फिल्मों में राम गोपाल बजाज छोटी लेकिन असरदार भूमिकाओं में नज़र आये।
• 2005 में आई जैकी चेन की फ़िल्म द मिथ में रामगोपाल बजाज ने एक मार्शल आर्ट्स टीचर का किरदार निभाया जिसके बाद वो विश्व पटल पर पहचाने गए।
• फ़िल्म जॉली एलएलबी में रामगोपाल बजाज  ने advocate रिज़वी की भूमिका निभाई है।
• रामगोपाल बजाज को थिएटर में उनके योगदान के लिए पद्मश्री और साल संगीत नाटक अकादमी पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया जा चुका है।
• रामगोपाल बजाज आज भी फ़िल्म, थिएटर और ओटीटी की दुनिया में सक्रिय हैं. उनकी अगली webseries फ़ितरत पार्ट 2 जल्द ही आनेवाली है।

आवाज़ें: नाथूराम अहिरवार और साथी

जब मैं वैशाली (Delhi NCR) में रहने आया तो यहां आबादी बहुत कम थी. नये मकान बन रहे थे. ऐसी ही एक इमारत जब ठीक हमारे घर के सामने बननी शुरू हुई तो उसके बेसमेंट में शाम को कुछ गाने-बजाने की आवाज़ें सुनाई देती थीं.  दो-तीन शामें गुज़री होंगी कि मुझसे रहा नहीं गया और मैंने एक शाम वो महफ़िल ज्वाएन की.

असल में मुझे अपने बचपन की शामें याद हो आई थीं जो बहुत पीछे कहीं छूट गयी हैं और उन तक अब पहुंचना असंभव है क्योंकि अब वह एक विस्थापित हो चुका सांकृतिक संसार है. बहरहाल वहां थोड़ी कोशिश के बाद अनौपचारिक संबंध बना सका और गोल बनाकर धुआं-पत्ती करते इन बुंदेलखंडी मज़दूरों की मस्ती का साझीदार बना. बहुत मामूली वाद्य यंत्रों और श्रम की मिठास से बना संगीत, जिसमें फ़लसफ़ा है और एक बेलौसपन भी. 

इन्हीं स्वरों से कहीं मालवा में पंडित कुमार गंधर्व भी कभी बंध गये होंगे और फिर उनका संगीत कभी वह हो सका जिसकी एक रॊयल फ़ैन फ़ॊलोविंग है.

बड़े भाग से ये तन पाये बोललियो रे मीठी बानी 

जग में आके गरब ना करियो थोरे दिन की जिंदगानी...

इस शहर का नाम क्या है ?

एक बेकार सी दोपहर के वक़्त पलंग के आखिरी छोर पर बैठे हुए लड़की ने कहा. वह मुझे पसंद है. ही इज़ सो केयरिंग ऐंड वैरी हम्बल. मालूम है, मेरी पहली रिंग पर वह फोन पिक करता है, जब मैं कहती हूँ अभी आओ तो वह उसी समय आता है. मेरे लिए रात भर जाग सकता है. उसने कई दिनों से अपनी जींस नहीं बदली क्योंकि वो मैंने उसे दिलवाई है. अभी वह क्रिकेट खेल रहा है मगर खेलते हुए भी मुझसे बात करता है. वो मेरे साथ रहना चाहता है.

इसके बाद एक लम्बी चुप्पी दोनों के बीच आकर बैठ गयी. उनके बीच कुछ खास बचा नहीं था. जिसे वे प्रेम समझते थे वह वास्तव में एक दूसरे के होने से एकांत को हरा देने का प्रयोजन मात्र था. एक तरल अजनबीपन बढ़ने लगा तो उसके पहलू से उठते हुए लड़की ने आखिरी बात कही. तुम्हारे साथ सिर्फ़ रो सकती हूँ और उसके साथ जी सकती हूँ.

उसके चले जाने के बाद कई सालों तक उस लड़के को कुछ खास इल्म न था कि किधर खड़ा है और किस झोंके के इंतज़ार में है. धुंधली तस्वीरों में उस शहर की सड़कें वीरान हो गई थी. घंटाघर के पास वाली चाय की थड़ी पर वह चुप सोचता रहता था. इस शहर का नाम क्या है ?

नदी के किनारे बैठे हुए
या वादियों को सूंघते, तनहा रास्तों के मोड़ पर
या कभी किसी सूनी सी बेंच पर
या शायद किसी पुराने पेड़ की छाँव में
एक तिकना था उसके हाथ में और अचानक छूट गया.

जैसे किसी ने पढ़ लिया हो स्मृतियों में बचा प्रेम...

ऐसा सोचते हुए मुझे ज़िन्दगी कुछ आसान लगती है
कुछ रूह को दीवानेपन की कैद में सुकून आता है.

जब अचानक बच्चे दौड़ते हुए आते हैं, कमरे में
मेरे हाथ से भी कोई पन्ना अक्सर छूट जाता है
जैसे पकड़ी गयी हो दोशीज़ा, चिट्ठी लिखते हुए महबूब को
कि बातें बेवजह हैं और बहुत सी हैं...

इधर कई दिनों से बादलों का फेरा है. हवा अचानक रुक जाती है. शहर की सड़कें और घर अजनबी लोगों से भर गए हैं. डॉलर की पदचाप से उडती हुई धूल पेशानी की मुबारक लकीरों को और गहरा कर रही है. अब ये रेगिस्तान मुझे रास नहीं आ रहा. बैडरूम में एक हाथ की दूरी पर प्रीमियम स्कॉच विस्की की तीन बोतलें रखी है मगर रूस की घटिया देसी शराब वोदका पीता हुआ शाम बुझा देता हूँ. तुम होती तो इसे भी डेस्टिनी कहते हुए मुंह फेर कर सो जाती...

Baune Ka Bum Pakoda

बौने का बम पकौड़ा

हिमालय टॉकीज सड़क से सटा हुआ था। उसके प्रवेश द्वार से लगाकर खड़े किए गए एक ठेलानुमा  खोखे में रामनगर का मशहूर बम पकौड़ा मिलता था।

एक कलूटा और गंजा बौना इस खोखे का संचालक था। खोखा बंद रहता तो वह साइकिल पर सारे शहर का चक्कर लगाता दिखता था। बौना होने के बावजूद वह हमेशा बड़ों की साइकिल चलाता था। गद्दी पर नहीं बैठ पाता था इसलिए सामर्थ्य भर तेज तेज कैंची चलाया करता। बाद के दिनों में उसने गद्दी हटवा ही दी।

साइकिल के कैरियर पर कभी आलू की बोरी लदी होती तो कभी उसी के जैसे उसके दो बच्चे बैठे होते। क्रिकेट की बॉल जितना होता था मसालेदार आलू और बेसन से बनाया जाने वाला बौने का बम पकौड़ा यानी दुनिया का सबसे लजीज व्यंजन। बौना एक दूसरा व्यापार भी चलाता था। लकड़ी से बना हिमालय टॉकीज का चौड़ा प्रवेश द्वार जमीन पर पहुंचने पर करीब एक इंच पहले खत्म हो जाता था। नतीजतन फर्श और गेट के बीच एक झिरी थी। अपना गाल फ़र्श से चिपकाकर श्रमपूर्वक उस पर आंख लगाने से पूरा पर्दा नजर आता था।

बौना स्कूल गोल करके आए बच्चों और स्कूल न जाने वाले पिक्चर प्रेमी बच्चों को पांच पैसे प्रति पंद्रह मिनट के हिसाब से इस झिरी के रास्ते पिक्चर देखने देता था।

एक बार में पांच बच्चे इसका मजा लूट सकते थे। दर्शक को एक बमपकौड़ा भी खरीदना होता था। मशहूर था कि यह सब करने से बौना लखपति बन चुका था। यानी उसके पास हमारे पिताओं से ज्यादा संपत्ति थी। ...

Bhisham Sahni was an iconic writer, playwright and actor, born on 8 August 1915.

Bhisham Sahni was one of the most well known and celebrated writers of post-independent India. While he was also known for being a professor, an essayist, translator, editor, dramatist, theatre Director, actor, social and political activist, it is his fiction that has made the most significant contribution to Hindi literature.

One of the most gifted writers of his time, a man whose humanity ran like a deep river through his life and work, a man who lived with quiet dignity and gentle kindness, Bhisham Sahni wrote some of the finest books of his time, books imbued with humanity, compassion, gentle humour and delicate nuances.

Proficient in Punjabi, Hindi, Sanskrit, Urdu and English, Bhisham Sahni started writing short stories at the age of 16. He wrote in Hindi more than a hundred short stories, compiled in ten volumes; seven novels, six plays, stories for children, a biography of his brother, Balraj Sahni, an autobiography and his Literary Journey (MeriSahitYatra) in Punjabi. BhishamSahni’s last unpublished novel on Gautama Buddha was written in English.

Sahni's screen acting debut came after he had turned 69 and new wave filmmaker Saeed Akhtar Mirza offered him the lead in Mohan Joshi Hazir Ho (1984). In 1986, the Indian neo-realist filmmaker Govind Nihalani turned Sahni's novel 'Tamas' into a landmark television film. It was also the high point of Sahni's acting career. He played an old Sikh on the run with his wife from the riot-torn areas. Watched, and loved, all over India, the film triggered violence from Hindu militants, including threats to Nihalani. He was last seen in Aparna Sen's critically acclaimed film Mr And Mrs Iyer (2002).

He received numerous awards for his excellence as a writer.

He died in Delhi on 11 July 2003.
