From Connections to Jellyfish (yes really)25 Aug 202500:32:08

When Equiteam's Liz Daniels saw a post on Facebook about a groundbreaking study by neuroscientist Gregory Berns, revealing that dogs may love their humans more than food or other dogs—it sparked a deep conversation with fellow horse lover and co-host, Louise Gillings, about the power of connection in the horse world.

Connections are essential because they support our overall well-being by increasing happiness and reducing stress, loneliness, and the risk of mental health issues.

As usual the pair go off piste as their conversations go to mute giraffes, jellyfish with no brains (or nerves) and what it means to truly feel part of a supportive equestrian community.

The Marmite of the Horse World - Clipping17 Oct 202300:41:55

Whether you love it or loathe it, clipping season is here once again and it is a subject that EquiTeam's Liz Daniels could chat for hours about!

While Liz Somerville is trying to rein Liz D in, the pair chat about their clipping experiences including Liz D being a clipping demonstrator for many years at Your Horse Live.

We've tried to condense it so in this episode you will find lots of helpful tips on everything from preparation to achieving the perfect clip and of course safety and whether we should be wearing hard hats, their favourite clippers and their pet hates.

BE90 to 3* - In Two Years!19 Sep 202300:23:13

Just how does someone go from doing their first BE90 to competing at 3* in just two years?

George Bartlett did!

EquiTeam's Liz Daniels chats to event rider George about his incredible journey and the pinnacle of his career so far – an impressive third place in George's first 3*L at Blair International Horse Trials.

Based at Caunton Manor Stud with Victoria Wright and her team, George first got spotted on the hunting field by Mrs Wright who invited him to the yard to do some hacking out.
George continued to work part time at the yard whilst at university and on completing his degree he was offered a full time position and thought 'Why not?!'

Incredibly grounded and grateful for the opportunities, George attributes his success to Victoria and the team around him who have believed in him from the start.

In this podcast George shares his journey and which controversial guests he would have at his dinner party!

Setbacks, Lost Mojos and Learning Days05 Sep 202300:27:41

Most of us will suffer setbacks, a crisis of confidence or loose our mojo at some point and whether it's because we are in the thick of the competition season or at the end of a busy summer with the kids off school, or trying to juggle work, life and holidays, there are plenty of people going through it right now.

Both of EquiTeam's Lizs' have experienced this over the last few weeks in different ways, so sat down to catch up and chat about some good lessons learnt at Blair Horse Trials, how taking the pressure off and being kind to yourself can actually be really beneficial and most of all how important it is to surround yourself with positive and supportive people.

Burghley Horse Trials also features as Liz S is just back from supporting Wills Oakden Eventing who had the most incredible week finishing 5th and 8th on his two horses. But not everyone's Burghley went to plan and it was a good reminder that even the professionals have setbacks and learning days. Make sure you listen to the end to find out which horse they would both like to take home…!

An EquiTeam Catch Up29 Aug 202300:30:39

There has been so much going on in EquiTeam over the last few months that Liz Daniels and Louise Gillings thought that a catch up podcast was in order!

The duo discuss all things EquiTeam including some highlights from the EquiTeam Connected group, as well as chatting about some of the content including the value of time blog, the Alan Davies Grooming and Turnout Series, as well as the new lunging series.

And we can't mention the content without chatting about superb workouts and plans from Lauren from Equestrian Fitness Scotland which is included weekly in the EquiTeam Connected membership.

The Value of Time22 Aug 202300:33:07

When our recent Equiteam blog about the value of time sparked an incredible conversation within our EquiTeam Connected Facebook group, we knew that we needed to continue the conversation and open it up to the wider equestrian community.

Time is, without doubt, our most precious commodity and once it's gone, it's gone. In this episode we chat about what we can achieve when we allow ourselves and our horses more time, what we can learn and how time allows us to make memories with friends and family and our horses and how to appreciate what's important in life.

Scroll less, say no more often, make memories and remember that work can (sometimes) wait!

Coach, Trainer, Rider & Producer: James Oakden15 Aug 202300:48:46

Coach, trainer, event rider, dressage rider, and producer of young horses, James Oakden joins us on the podcast to share his journey. Based in Fife, Scotland at Team Oakden, James runs and juggles a big operation along side his wife and fellow trainer and rider Sarah. Coaching and supporting clients across mulitple disciplines and levels, backing and producing the stars of the future and riding his own event and dressage horses, James has a wealth of experience to share.

His experience of riding round some of the biggest tracks in the world and the lessons he has learnt from his own coaches over the years has shaped how he now coaches and trains. One particular lesson with the great Mark Phillips transformed the way he thinks, rides and coaches. When asked what made that one lesson stand out, the response was simply the clarity and simplicity in the explanation of how to ride cross country.

Listening to James talk it's clear that his desire to learn hasn't changed over the years, from reading text books and watching videos of the best in the world as a young rider, to today when he has found his own coaches that work for him ... the coach is still being coached.

Celebrating the real wins18 Aug 202500:27:10

EquiTeam's Liz and Lou discuss how to focus on the real wins in the face of disappointment. The journey with horses is never linear, and we certainly can't win all of the time, but when you have worked really hard and not quite reached the mark you hoped for it is easy to focus on the downside.

One of our EquiTeam members experienced this at the weekend, but reframed her experience brilliantly and instead focused on the fabulous experience that her horse had and how far they have come to even qualify for the Area Festivals.

The pair talk about Never Give Up day and discuss when in fact it is a good idea to give a negative habit.

When Should I Call the Vet?11 Jul 202300:31:01

This week Liz Somerville is joined by husband, Hugh Somerville from Loch Leven Equine Practice, for the second episode in our 'Ask the Vet' series. One of the most common questions the practice gets asked is 'how do I know when to call the vet?' So Liz puts this question to Hugh, and specifically asks about some of the more common emergencies that the vets get called to see.

Covering colic, laminitis, high temperatures, wounds, sore eyes, choke, foot abscesses and penetrations and coughs and snotty noses Hugh explains not only about when to call the vet but also shares some top tips that owners can do whilst they are awaiting for the vet to arrive.    The take-home message was overwhelmingly to always call and ask for advice. Technology makes it much easier for the vets to triage a call and make a plan about whether the horse should be seen as an emergency or whether it can wait until normal working hours, so if in doubt pick up the phone as soon as you are worried.

Why the world needs more Alan Davies02 May 202300:23:01

When the world's most famous super groom agrees to come to Scotland to coach for EquiTeam Confidence Camps and film some grooming and turnout videos for our EquiTeam members, we knew we were in for a fun few days.

What we didn't realise was just what an absolute privilege it would be to spend time with the man who has travelled the world looking after, amongst others, Valegro, Utophia and Gio and who has been part of numerous Olympic, World and European medal winning teams.

In this episode we reflect on our time with Alan, what we learnt, what we still want to ask him, and just how kind and generous he was with his time, knowledge and experience. It is fantastic to see how his hard work, dedication and support from Carl and Charlotte have given him a platform to promote the role the super grooms play in keeping our horses fit, healthy and at the top of their game.

Let's Talk Dressage Judging with Gillian Peters21 Mar 202300:28:34

Are judges really as scary as we sometimes think?

This is just one of the questions that EquiTeam's Liz Daniels put to British Dressage Judge Gillian Peters, on this week's podcast.

Gillian is a BD List 1 judge, the Scottish Judge Regional representative, a coach and has also competed to advanced level, an accolade of achievements she has juggled around a job and family life.

Gillian shares where the motivation for her inspiring journey to become a List 1 judge came from, and why she drove 1,000 miles to judge ten horses.

Adding a brilliant perspective from inside the judge's box, Gillian shares why sometimes the judges might be as apprehensive as the riders trotting down the centre line, and why she thinks getting a nine is achievable.

With a clear passion for the sport and training, Gillian delves into why she thinks test riding training is invaluable, and why training to be a judge is now more accessible than ever before.

Whether you're interested in becoming a judge, or are a rider yourself, this is a must-listen episode to dispel the myths of being a judge.

One Woman, a Cob and a Connie Dancing at PSG07 Feb 202300:32:27

Imagine being told that you were in the wrong warm up ring just because you were riding a native pony. This is what happened to Sarah Vousden as she warmed up for her Advanced Medium test on her traditional cob. Many of us would let this scare and intimidate us but not Sarah who thrives on feeling like the under-dog.

So what does it take to train a hairy traditional cob called Harley and a sharp and very spooky connie called George to PSG level? According to Sarah, determination, the right mindset and the tenacity to keep going. After feeling disappointed with consistently low marks at elementary, Sarah recognised that she had to change her mindset and not be disappointed with the scores, because the horses were doing the best that they could.

But that didn't mean that they couldn't progress up the levels and after a conversation with her coach Tom Graham they decided to focus on training the movements and see where they got too. And that's how Sarah found herself wearing tails and dancing her way down the centre line at PSG level.

Happy listening, we hope you come away feeling as inspired as we did!
