Marcus Nuccio (Wrong Numbers, Pet Symmetry, Ratboys)03 Jul 202501:03:26

Marcus Joins the show for a fantastic conversation about his new album Take A Beat from his project Wrong Numbers. You may know Marcus from his drumming in the highly adored Pet Symmetry and the fast-growing Ratboys. Wrong Numbers contains fun flourishes and invigorating musical moments that I've come to expect from Marcus' other projects.

In this episode we get into Marcus' history within the Chicago music scene, meeting the people he would end knowing to this day, an insane mixed bill show from 2013 getting into electronic music hardware, developing his solo songwriting process, collecting musical ideas for the Wrong Numbers project, lots of production talk (cool), abandoning sp*tify, mindfully listening to music, modding old ipods, and more (if you can believe it)

Grace Notary (16 on Center)01 May 202501:06:53

Grace Notary is currently the brand marketing & partnerships manager at 16 On Center, a hospitality group that produces local festivals and represents Chicago’s most iconic independent music venues -  Salt Shed, Empty Bottle, Thalia Hall, The Promontory, and SPACE.

This was a wonderful conversation breaking out LWYL's usual artist interviews branching into the wider music industry. I was intrigued to learn about the ins and outs of Grace's work at some of Chicago's most prominent independent venues. I hope you learn something new!

Will Lindsay (Buying Fireworks In Indiana, Caracara, Steady Hands)24 Apr 202502:03:22

Will Lindsay joins the show to talk about his new project Buying Fireworks In Indiana. I originally met Will through interviewing his other project Caracara back in 2022 while they were on tour in Chicago. Through some circumstances of fate Will found himself living in Chicago and since him and I have become fast friends. This chat encompassess Will’s journey of founding Buying Fireworks In Indiana, the creative challenges that have fueled it, how current and past experiences have helped from a new venture, tackling the abstract challenge of making art on social media, and of course the music that helped inspire it.

Will Lindsay is a musician and storyteller who’s spent the past decade chasing songs and dodging algorithms. He fronts the critically acclaimed Philadelphia indie-punk band Caracara, and before that, made noisy, joyful chaos as W.C. Lindsay. He’s toured the world, lost sleep in vans, and somehow managed to make music that people actually felt.
Now, he’s pouring all of that into Buying Fireworks in Indiana—a solo project that blends indie electronic music, cinematic video essays, and longform writing into something you can’t quite describe at parties. The project is a search—for feeling, for meaning, for stories that don’t disappear into the void of infinite scroll.
Shaped by years of DIY shows, overnight drives, and conversations in strange corners of the world, Buying Fireworks in Indiana is part travelogue, part love letter to subculture. It’s a living archive of underground music, fleeting moments, and people chasing something just out of frame.
Musically, the project lives between genres—in a space Lindsay calls “drum & bliss”—a blend of indie electronic, future garage, post-punk, and melodic drum & bass. It’s emotionally charged and built for movement: dancing, driving, drifting, disappearing.
The rest of the story unfolds in essays and videos—dispatches from the road, meditations on art and impermanence, and quiet glimpses of the collaborations that become the songs.
Buying Fireworks in Indiana is a listener-reader-supported project. If the music hits, if the stories get under your skin—becoming a paid subscriber is how you keep it alive. Premium supporters help ensure the next chapter is not only possible, but honest, wild, and worth doing.
In a digital landscape that can amplify and erase with the same swipe, Lindsay leans into the contradiction—making art that holds tension between nostalgia and progress, tradition and invention. Buying Fireworks in Indiana isn’t just his journey; it’s an open invitation to hop in and come along.

Stream Rare Bird now!

Blake's Recommendation at the end of the episode is for the new Djo album The Crux

Cold Gawd #225 Jan 202301:26:12

I am excited to debut the first-ever full band Interview with Cold Gawd. I caught up with the band hours before their showcase at The Belasco in Downtown Los Angeles, California celebrating Dais Records 15 year anniversary. It is exciting to see the growth in the project since my first interview with Matt back in March of 2021. Since signing to Dais Cold Gawd released their sophomore record, played numerous west-coast shows, and played alongside Deftones, Freddie Gibbs and Turnstile at the annual Dios De Los Deftones - All while holding the shoegaze torch high.

Cold Gawd's Sophomore record "Got Get Me The Fuck Out Of Here" has a controversial reputation within the online shoegaze community, namely the r/shoegaze. The band's controversy is not lost on Matt and the band, in some ways they revel in it. Despite detractors GGMTFOOH has found critical acclaim and excitement on sites like Revolver, Cvltnation and New Noise Mag. Matt and his bandmates share a mutual love for shoegaze and their collective vision to be the biggest shoegaze band ever. Cold Gawd's ambitions don't end there... Listen to my interview with Cold Gawd to find out what is next.

Harper Boyhtari (Greet Death)12 Jun 202501:00:41

Harper Boyhtari joins the show to talk about Greet Death's new record Die In Love arriving June 27th via Deathwish Inc. I am very excited to bring this conversation with one of my favorite bands going. Harper and I get into the start of her and Gaval's songwriting partnership, her connection to Chicago, finding your voice and choosing the right words as a songwriter, Neil Young, Blink-182, Death Cab for Cutie, Jason Molina, and much more

From the jump when I discovered 2019's New Hell I was hooked with Greet Death's depressive distortion brought deeper with the vocal tag team of Harper Boyhtari and Logan Gaval. Greet Death knows how to take the listener on a journey, opting for asymmetrical song structures rather than repeating hooks. Three records in and Greet Death is taking their love for folk rockers like Neil Young to the next level, remaining noisy and heartfelt. Die In Love is a record of contrasts, its bright moments help to define the light from the dark. It might be their happiest record yet, but Greet Death is only giving a smirk.
