093. Pet Loss, Finding Fulfillment and Transformational Growth with Christine Passo17 Jan 202501:07:35

Send us a text

Join me in welcoming Christine Passo to the podcast, who is certified in Life Purpose Coaching, Life Transformation Coaching, and Cognitive Behavior Therapy.

Today we’re sharing her really powerful journey through various forms of grief and loss. From coping with death to financial loss, to relationship loss and the devastating loss of her 8-year-old Sheltie, Maya Ray, they have all significantly changed her.

After 20+ years in marketing and advertising, she went through the transformation of changing everything in her life to focus on what mattered most to her—impact and purpose. Christine's ambition is to change the world by redefining how we think about compassion, grief, and our life’s purpose.

We finish up this chat by talking about the need to recognize overlooked types of grief, and the importance of mourning non-traditional losses. I have no doubt this episode will offer you valuable, inspiring insights and practical tools for coping with your own grief.

092. Los Angeles Fires & Natural Disaster Loss and Grief13 Jan 202500:34:04

Send us a text

In light of the devastating fires in Los Angeles, I couldn’t help but acknowledge this with special episode of the Life With Grief Podcast.

As a Northern Californian who’s no stranger to fires and other natural disasters, this episode is not only about acknowledging the tragedy that continues unfolding and showing love to the thousands upon thousands of people affected, but to address the overwhelming grief, loss, and trauma that come with such natural disasters.

As encouraging as it is to see people coming together to provide relief, I also see a lack of empathy and quick judgments in many cases. It’s more than just losing material items. Things that, on paper, could be easily replaced. It’s livelihoods, communities, schools, homes, sentimental items, and places of comfort that are gone within a matter of hours.

Today is all about the importance of compassion, the need to acknowledge the depth of this tragedy, and understanding how grief like this runs so much deeper than we realize.

How to support fire relief efforts:

091. Creating Purpose from Pain & Loss with Zachariah Thompson of The Scatter Joy Project09 Jan 202501:13:51

Send us a text

Frieds, I’m beyond honored and excited to share the story of Zachariah Thompson of The Scatter Joy Project with you today.

Without giving away too much of his story, Zach's first experience with grief was when he lost his beloved uncle, Joe, when he was in 7th grade. That, and a very frightening health scare with his mom when he was 22.

Aside from having countless commonalities and a really special bond with his uncle, Zach also inherited ARVC—a hereditary heart condition that would alter his life as he knew it.

In this episode, Zach and I are digging into not only his profound story, but the dual nature of grief—grieving for lost versions of oneself, and this paradoxical grief of receiving a second chance at life. This, on top of losing dear loved ones as we both have.

Zach elaborates on the emotional spectrum we can feel as we’re grieving, ranging from anger and resentment to gratitude, all while emphasizing how these experiences have transformed his life into a profound purpose in his work within mental health with The Scatter Joy Project.

I first became familiar with The Scatter Joy Project through Instagram, ended up sharing a bunch of their content because it’s SO good, and from there I just knew I had to have Zach on with us. I know you'll love this episode as much as I do.

The angel day of my dad, Greg Jordan, is coming up on July 13th, so I’m reflecting on the last four years since his death.I wanted to have an open, vulnerable conversation and share some thoughts and feelings that I'm having around approaching this (unfortunate) milestone. I did this last year with my mom on her for your angel day as well, and I think it's so important to take a moment to process and reflect on days like these. So, I’m sharing what I'm feeling and thinking with this day approaching, but also some things I'm reflecting on and things I've learned in the last several years. My goal is for really anyone here listening to glean something from this episode, and take something away from this conversation that you can apply to your grieving and healing journey.Work with me:- 14-Day Relief in Your Grief Challenge: https://lossesbecomegains.com/relief-in-grief- Explore my Intentional Life After Loss membership: https://lossesbecomegains.com/membership- Work with me one-on-one: https://lossesbecomegains.com/work-with-tara

062. How to Cope with a Loss of Identity as we Grieve04 Jul 202400:36:52

Send us a text

“Wife”“Mother”“Father”“Sibling”“Friend”“Cousin”“Boyfriend”“Girlfriend”“Partner”“Dog mom” or “dog dad” … the list goes on. How do you identify? What identity do you feel has changed since you’ve suffered your loss? Has it evolved? Do you still identify as whatever your “title” is? Perhaps not sure yet and trying to figure it out? Maybe figuring out what this new shift in your reality actually means for you now? So relatable, my friend. When we suffer a loss, we’re left to wonder… where does this leave us? What now? For many, sadly, they find themselves asking if they deserve these titles still. In this episode this week, we're digging into that! We'll talk about how to understand the complexities of coping with feeling a loss of identity after you’ve been through a loss, and how this affects the grieving process. Read the blog post: https://lossesbecomegains.com/coping-with-lost-identity/

054. 7 Reasons Why Alone Time is Important for Healing09 May 202400:37:47

Send us a text

Today I wanted to have a quick conversation about why alone time is important in our grieving journey, and in our healing journey. We're going to talk about seven reasons I feel this way, both as a Grief and Transformational Life Coach and a fellow griever.I know we can sometimes want to be surrounded by people as we're grieving, and I always encourage that! Having a solid support system is critical. But the thing is, the practice of embracing alone time can lead to self-reflection, introspection, and thinking about where our life was, where it is, and where we see it going. We can't always do that if we're inundated with other people, right? All I want you to do today—no matter where you fall on this spectrum of wanting people around you—is to hear me out on this topic. I think there is so much peace to be found when we have that time alone, and here we’ll talk about why!Work with me:

053. Navigating the Lifelong Journey of Grief with Michele DeVille02 May 202401:00:56

Send us a text

I am incredibly honored to share today's guest with you guys. I’ve been a fan of hers for a LONG time now, y’all! I connected with her through Instagram, back when I first started following her early in the days of Losses Become Gains. I absolutely fell in love with her content and her beautiful writing, and now I have the privilege of sharing her with YOU today!I have no doubt you are going to love her as well. Today, we are chatting with Michelle DeVille. She is a grief specialist, educator, coach, end of life doula (we get into what this is in this episode!), speaker, and writer. Here, she shares her profound story with us—and let me tell you, she has suffered a lot of loss of different kinds. But really, her message is so beautiful. Like most of us, she knows how paralyzing grief and loss can be. It's because of her own painful life experiences that she is dedicated to helping others, just like you, who are struggling and facing some of their most difficult season ever. She and I share the belief that we can't escape loss and grief, but we CAN choose how we live and love every single day. It all comes down to how we navigate it, how we cope, and how we can shift our perspective. This is such an empowering conversation. Get excited, my friends!Connect with Michele:Email: grief@micheledeville.com Website: www.micheledeville.com Instagram: @micheledeville

052. How to Cope with Insensitive Comments in Grief25 Apr 202400:52:52

Send us a text

As if grief isn't difficult enough, insensitive, ignorant, and unnecessary comments are, sadly, a common occurrence for so many of us. These kinds of remarks will likely come our way at some point as we're grieving.Things like…

  • You should be doing [fill in the blank].
  • You need to let it go.
  • People speaking on behalf of our loved one who has died, like putting words in their mouth about what they would be thinking, feeling, or saying.
  • Why are you dwelling on it?
  • You should get over it by now.
  • You should be moved on… why aren’t you moved on?
  • Do you think it’s healthy to think or talk about it this much?

And SO many more! So, I wanted to cover this topic because there are so many complexities to it. And the thing is, comments like this can really hurt, right?! They can even set us back in our grieving and healing journey.I want us to have a very open, honest, and raw conversation about it. And, of course, equip you with some tools and guidance on how to cope with this—and how to manage these comments—if this comes up as you’re trying to navigate your grief, life after loss, and everything in between.Work with me:Explore my Life With Grief membership: https://lossesbecomegains.com/membershipWork with me one-on-one: https://lossesbecomegains.com/work-with-tara

050. Our Traumatic Birth Story & A Lesson In Listening to Your Intuition11 Apr 202401:08:33

Send us a text

I can’t believe we’ve reached 50 EPISODES of the Life With Grief Podcast, my friends! To commemorate this in a big way, I’m sharing a personal story that is close to my heart—the (very traumatic) birth story of our daughter, Audrey, in January 2024. I have to be honest, I was really going back and forth on sharing this. There was definitely a time in the last two or three months where I didn’t want to relive this experience and wasn’t sure if I would ever feel comfortable talking about it. But, I think it's an important story to share. Not only because I want to be very open and vulnerable with you and my grief journey, but this birth was such an important lesson in intuition for me. I've always felt like I was a fairly intuitive person, but honestly, since the deaths of my parents and as I've continued to grow and become more introspective, I felt like this was such a beautiful example of that. I couldn’t not share it. Had I not listened to my intuition, the outcome of our daughter's life would have been very different (in other words, she would not have survived). So, I’m honored and humbled to share this experience with you today…

048. Navigating Grief & Loss in the Workplace28 Mar 202400:45:46

Send us a text

Grieving and coping with a loss while still having to work do NOT mix, amirite? This can be so, so difficult, so we’re getting into it and talking about it today.Having to continue showing up at our job as we’re going through a loss is by far one of the most physically and emotionally taxing things that someone grieving has to go through. We might not have the option to stop working as we need to support ourselves or our family, but trying to do our work effectively and be a (somewhat) fully functioning human being can be one of the most uncomfortable, distracting, and overwhelming things we must endure. Meanwhile, your world is crumbling around you. In this episode, we will:

  • Chat about and validate how difficult it can be to continue working while grieving a loss (whether we’re in the process of loss, or it already happened)
  • What this experience can look and feel like.
  • Chat about ways to cope as you journey through this emotionally taxing time.

NOTE: Even if coping with a loss at work isn’t relevant to you right now, I hope you tune in because you might be able to apply some of this episode to your grieving journey—especially if you’re feeling overwhelmed with balancing your grief and daily demands, whatever they may be. Episode 47 mentioned in this week's episode: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/047-navigating-job-loss-self-worth-finding-your-purpose/id1688812587?i=1000650023765

047. Navigating Job Loss, Self-Worth & Finding Your Purpose21 Mar 202400:37:43

Send us a text

I wanted to hold a special space on the podcast for a loss that’s very important to recognize: the loss of a job.   Losing a job is HARD! And let’s be real, whether it’s one you genuinely enjoy or one you’re sort of “meh” about, the shock, discomfort, anxiety, and worry this can cause is undeniable. The most stress-inducing aspect of losing a job for many of us is probably the need for a stable income to support yourself or your family. But there’s so much more to this type of loss, too. We might attach a lot of our identity to our job, treasure our colleagues, deeply enjoy the work we do, love the company… the list goes on. The approach I wanted to take with this episode is not only to validate and acknowledge how difficult this is, but to talk about ways to cope with this loss the best we can. That said, I wanted to take it a step further and touch on how this grief can affect our psyche and self-worth. And to build on that, we’ll finish it out with how we can reframe our mindset if this does happen to us, and how we can move forward from there with a renewed sense of hope and purpose.

Let’s bust some common grief myths today, my friend! We’re chatting with Shay Wingate. She’s a Licensed Therapist and Grief Coach, and a fellow griever just like me (and probably you!). She has actually graced the podcast in the past, and I’m super excited to have her back for this little series that we're doing on grief myths we constantly hear about as Grief Educators, and grievers ourselves. We wanted to make these episodes as bite-sized for you as possible, so this little series is going to be split into three parts. Today is part one of three—stay tuned for more coming soon!Shea created this awesome Grief Myths Mini Series (details are linked below!), but with that in mind, we thought this would be an awesome opportunity to come together and dispel some of these. We’re having like a fun, light-hearted, high level conversation and covering these myths today:

  • Everything happens for a reason
  • Time heals all wounds
  • There are 5 stages of grief
  • Your loved one wouldn't want you to be sad

045. Feeling Like We’re Moving Backwards in Our Grief (and How to Cope!)07 Mar 202400:34:42

Send us a text

Do you ever feel like you're moving backward in your grief? Worry not, my friend. You're not, and we're going to chat about why in this episode!I’ve had countless people come to me with feeling like they’re moving backward in their grief journey, and this is a legitimate concern! Why? 1) It’s stressful! We worry that there’s something wrong with us or we're "grieving wrong". 2) There's concern this is going to be a permanent state and that we won't "get through it". 3) We might worry this negativity will always haunt us, and this moving backward feeling will always be on our toes. But what if I told you there’s just no such thing? We'll talk about this, why this happens, and ways to cope. Because grieving is a unique and non-linear process, and as something that comes and goes in intensity, experiencing setbacks is a normal part of the journey. So, let's dig into this together! 044. Understanding and Coping with Emotions as we Grieve29 Feb 202400:35:58

Send us a text

There are a lot of misconceptions about how we feel and process our emotions, but this is a massive key to coping with our grief and unlocking this full, intentional life we want to live that I’m always going on about!I wanted this quick conversation to be about why we grieve the way we do. Why it’s so emotional, why we can feel stuck, why it can feel irrational. We’re not just validating your feelings here, we’re digging deeper about WHY exactly grief hurts so bad.Why it burns and aches in places we didn’t know we had within us, why that’s sometimes hard to understand, and why it can be so difficult to navigate on a day-to-day basis. But when we can better understand the “why” behind this, we can better understand the emotions we’re feeling and why they’re coming up so strong. That, my friend, is when we can start feeling unstuck, more patient with our grief, and even hopeful that this process will evolve and shift with time and the right grief work.Work with me:Explore my Intentional Life After Loss membership: https://lossesbecomegains.com/membershipWork with me one-on-one: https://lossesbecomegains.com/work-with-taraConnect with me further: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lossesbecomegains/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/losses.become.gainsWebsite: https://lossesbecomegains.com/Shop the LBG Daily Journal: https://lossesbecomegains.com/journalBy accessing this Podcast, I acknowledge that the entire contents are the property of Tara Accardo, or used by Tara Accardo with permission. 043. Making Decisions While Grieving a Loved One22 Feb 202400:33:14

Send us a text

Having to make decisions when a loved one’s health is declining, or even after they've died, is not only difficult but is something we can question over and over again. We can question whether our decisions about things are the right ones through the fog of our grief, and not even want the weight of that responsibility, right? So, if we’re faced with decisions like this, what do we do? What do we do if we HAVE to make decisions, be it about their health, their estate, legal issues, decisions that affect our family, etc.?Your gain from this episode will be to join me in identifying how and why making decisions around our loved ones can be one of the most confounding parts of the process before they die, and even after they die. You know I’m all about coping tools, so we’ll also get into some ways to better cope with this, feel a little better about it, and find some peace with it all.Work with me:Explore my Intentional Life After Loss membership: https://lossesbecomegains.com/membershipWork with me one-on-one: https://lossesbecomegains.com/work-with-taraConnect with me further: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lossesbecomegains/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/losses.become.gainsWebsite: https://lossesbecomegains.com/Shop the LBG Daily Journal: https://lossesbecomegains.com/journalBy accessing this Podcast, I acknowledge that the entire contents are the property of Tara Accardo, or used by Tara Accardo with permission. 042. Meeting Our Grief Where It’s At with Grant Garry15 Feb 202400:49:46

I’m thrilled to share the stage today with Filmmaker, Actor, Singer, and Certified Grief Educator, Grant Garry.Grant is the director of the documentary "Meet Me Where I Am”, which explores the topic of grief through individual stories of loss, love, and hope.It also focuses on how to "be there" for grievers, and what to do/say and what not to do/say. It features some really incredible people and voices in the grief space, and even some famous faces you would recognize that are being brutally honest and open with their grief which is SO refreshing! I was lucky enough to get a little sneak preview, and I genuinely loved this documentary so, so much. I might have shed a happy tear... or five! This film addresses topics and situations that truly need to be recognized and discussed more, and I am so here for it.It’s so encouraging to see what Grant is doing here in directing this highly-needed film to help normalize grief. This conversation today is so needed in my opinion, and I think Grant has such a unique perspective on grief having been a part of this filmmaking process. I hope you enjoy it and that it resonates with you! 041. 3 Things I’ve Learned at 33 Years Old08 Feb 202400:51:12

Send us a text

I'm so excited to bring you a special episode this week in honor of me turning 33 on February 2nd: 3 Things I've Learned at 33 Years Old. Truthfully, there are a lot of things I've learned in my 33 years here Earthside so far. But, given I can't talk your ear off for too long, I narrowed it down to three major life lessons that I can't wait to share with you.  Without giving too much away up front, we're digging into topics like:
  • The timing of things in life and “shoulda, woulda, couldas”.
  • Understanding hustle culture.
  • Moving “forward” vs. moving “on”.
  • Tapping into and owning our unique magic that we bring.
  • The value of being open-minded and open to change.
  • How we're not guaranteed anything in life, and how we cope with adversity in terms of growth and personal development.
I think it's important to do a reflection every now and again to see how far we've come, what we're learning along the way, and the ways we've grown with the beauty of age.  Because truly, as unsettling as getting older can be at times, the wisdom we can gain from more time and life experiences is second to none.
