216. Mother's Day Without Your Mom: An Conversation About Grief, Healing & Moving Through It06 May 202601:01:32

Drop me a message or voice note!

Mother's Day can be one of the most painful days of the year when you're missing your mom. And if you're dreading it, this episode is for you.

In this special panel episode of the Life With Grief Podcast, I'm joined by three incredible women—Liz Quinn, Sara Rian, and Chelsea Ohlemiller—for an honest, heartfelt conversation about what it's really like to grieve your mother, navigate Mother's Day without her, and find your way forward without losing the love you carry for her.

Each of us shares our own story of loss:
💔 Tara's mom, Lori, passed away from esophageal cancer in 2019
💔 Sara's mom, Susan, died by suicide in 2018
💔 Chelsea's mom, Rita, passed away in 2017
💔 Liz's mom, Colleen, died in 2020 following an Alzheimer's diagnosis

Four different losses, four different journeys, one shared truth: grief doesn't follow a timeline, and you don't have to face Mother's Day alone.

In this episode, we cover:
✨ The early days of grief: silence, trauma, confusion, and those overwhelming "never again" thoughts
✨ How grief shifts over time: identity changes, finding community, writing as healing, and reaching new life milestones without her
✨ Experiencing motherhood without your own mom by your side
✨ The duality of joy and grief, holding happiness and heartache at the same time
✨ Practical ways to approach Mother's Day that actually help
✨ Why grief is deeply personal, and why every loss, every relationship, and every timeline is valid

Whether you lost your mom recently or years ago, whether this is your first Mother's Day without her or your tenth, this conversation will remind you that what you're feeling makes complete sense, and that you are not alone in it.

🎙️ Listen now and share this episode with someone who needs to hear it this Mother's Day.

215. Podcast Update! + The Sacred Pause: Giving Yourself Permission to Pivot After Loss04 May 202600:52:45

Drop me a message or voice note!

Have you ever found yourself doing all the things, showing up, checking the boxes, keeping the pace, but quietly wondering if something needs to give? If you've been feeling that pull to pause, pivot, or finally make room for the thing that's been calling to you... this episode is for you.

This week, I'm getting really real with you. I'm sharing a personal update about Mourning Sips & Soul Shifts—and more importantly, the why behind it. Because the honest truth is, this decision didn't come from nowhere.

It came from a lot of self-reflection, some really vulnerable conversations with myself, and the three key reasons I made this decision and how I got here that I think you're going to deeply relate to—grief journey or not.

Here's what we're getting into:
✨ The announcement: what's changing with this podcast and why
✨ Burnout in grief: what it actually looks like (hint: it's not always a breakdown)
✨ The pressure to keep producing, and why consistent output means nothing when you're running on empty
✨ Embracing slowness in a culture that glorifies busy. and what grief has taught me about truly living vs. just moving through life
✨ Fear disguised as logic: how many of us stay stuck in things that no longer serve us because change feels scary
✨ The exciting things I'm making room for, including a book I am no longer putting off
✨ A gentle invitation for you to ask yourself: do you need to take a sacred pause somewhere in your life, too? Where does your energy need to be reallocated?

This episode is for the person who has been going, going, going... not because they love the pace, but because slowing down feels terrifying. The one who has been holding on tight to everything they can control after loss took so much from them. The one who knows something needs to shift, but hasn't quite given themselves permission yet. If you see yourself in this, I know you'll get so much from this episode.

Drop me a message or voice note!

Grief doesn't always come just once, and for some of us, it comes in waves that feel impossible to survive. In this episode, I sit down with grief advocate and host of The Healing Hearts Podcast Liz Quinn, who has walked through some of the most profound losses a person can experience: the death of her firstborn daughter, and both of her parents.

Liz's story is one of raw honesty, deep love, and the kind of grace that only comes from truly living with grief. Whether you're navigating the loss of a child, a parent, or multiple losses at once, this conversation will make you feel less alone and remind you that carrying your loved ones forward is one of the most beautiful things you can do.

In this episode, we talk about:
✨ Liz's early experiences with grief after losing her grandmother and how that shaped her relationship with loss
✨ The heartbreaking loss of her firstborn daughter, Alivia
✨ The rituals and visits that helped Liz honor her daughter's life
✨ How Liz and her husband grieved differently after losing Alivia
✨ Losing her father in 2018 to stage-four esophageal cancer while navigating her mother's Alzheimer's decline
✨ The loss of her mother
✨ What it means to continue bonds with those we've lost
✨ Parenting without your own parents, and how to find your footing when your biggest support system is gone
✨ Giving yourself grace in grief, and why taking it one day at a time isn't just a cliché... it's survival

104. The Silent Sorrow: Navigating Disenfranchised Loss & Grief27 Mar 202500:58:27

Drop me a message or voice note!

We’re diving into the concept of disenfranchised grief—the “silent sorrow”, as I sometimes call it. This is grief that’s often not openly acknowledged, socially validated or publicly mourned, which makes it especially challenging to navigate.

In this conversation we’re chatting about various examples of disenfranchised grief that are long overdue for some validation—think: the loss of an ex-partner or estranged family member, unrecognized or invalidated relationships, losses that are considered “less significant” than a death, stigmatized losses, losses of a job or sense of identity, major life transitions, and more.

This is truly such an underrated yet incredibly important type of grief to acknowledge, so I’m also offering some insight into how to cope and navigate this. And, as always, giving you some practical coping strategies along the way.

My mission with this topic is to validate your experience and loss, and provide you tools, support, and mindset shifts to help you navigate this complex form of grief.

101. Navigating Grief and Healing Through Fiction with Author Lauren Evans06 Mar 202500:59:34

Drop me a message or voice note!

Today we’re joined by Lauren Evans, author of the highly relatable fictional novel, “Casket Case”.

I serendipitously found this novel in an airport and was immediately drawn to it, then proceeded to finish it very quickly because it was THAT good!

In this episode we're talking all about Lauren's book, which intertwines themes of love and grief—two things I know will speak to so many grievers here. Her book follows Nora, a young woman who returns to her hometown after her parents' death to run their casket store, who eventually meets Garrett, a logistics coordinator for death. And yes, it's as juicy as it sounds!

In our conversation we explore how grief shapes the characters' lives, and how it reflects real-life grieving experiences that we all go through—ones I have no doubt you can relate to. We touch on the challenges Lauren faced while writing about grief and loss in this way, and how writing served as a cathartic process for her.

The episode highlights the importance of acknowledging grief, giving ourselves permission to feel it, and finding ways to integrate and transform this profound and deeply painful experience.

Jordan shares super valuable insights about creating a culture of support, the importance of community during difficult times, how many different ways support can be shown, and discovering what our “support language” is (similar to love languages!).

Most importantly, this conversation is all about how we can grieve in a more effective, peaceful, supported way.

098. Parent Loss, Non-Traditional Loss and Grief as Our Guide with Travel Expert & TV Host, Kathy McCabe13 Feb 202501:18:15

Drop me a message or voice note!

I’m so thrilled to welcome travel expert, host, and executive producer of Dream of Italy and Dream of Europe on PBS, Kathy McCabe.

Kathy is so incredibly talented, and when you’re watching one of her shows, you’d never know some of the trials and tribulations she’s endured. I think this is such a beautiful example of never really knowing what someone is going through just based off of seeing them on social media or TV, or even in person.

After unexpectedly losing both of her parents, she found herself on a journey of self-discovery and healing through her adventures across Italy.

Reconnecting with her Italian heritage, building a successful career, and choosing a path that doesn’t follow traditional societal norms for Gen X women of marriage or motherhood has been transformative for her. Now, she hopes to encourage others who may feel like they don’t fit into these molds to find fulfillment in their own way.

Today’s conversation is all about embracing an unconventional path in life, and how travel helped her cope with the grief of losing both her parents.

Kathy’s perspective comes from her personal experiences and 22+ years of travel storytelling through her award-winning series, and we have a really beautiful and vulnerable conversation that I have no doubt you’ll resonate with.

Drop me a message or voice note!

In today’s episode, I’m sitting down with Ben Forman to talk about a kind of grief that often goes unseen—losing a sibling, and what it means to navigate life as the “forgotten griever.”

Ben shares the story of losing his younger brother, Sam, in a sudden skiing accident at just 25 years old, and how that loss reshaped his identity, his family, and the way he moves through the world.

We talk about the quiet complexities of sibling grief, the guilt and dark thought patterns that can surface, and the tension between surviving loss and growing through it.

We explore:
✨ What it feels like to lose your only sibling and become part of a “family of three”
✨ The identity shift that comes with sibling loss
✨ The “forgotten griever” experience and why sibling grief is often overlooked
✨ Navigating guilt, intrusive thoughts, and emotional spirals after loss
✨ The difference between post-traumatic stress and post-traumatic growth
✨ Finding connection through community
✨ Coping tools and using physical/tactile reminders
✨ How grief can shape the choices you make in your life moving forward
✨ Ben’s documentary Higher Calling and the healing journey behind it
✨ Riding motorcycles through the Himalayas as a way to honor loss and seek meaning

This episode is for anyone navigating sibling loss, complicated grief, or the quiet, often unspoken layers of life after losing someone deeply woven into your identity.

097. How Travel & Exploration Can Help Us Grieve, Grow, and Transform06 Feb 202500:39:51

Drop me a message or voice note!

In case you didn’t already hear, I co-host another podcast called Taste Toast Travel with my husband, John, and I'm so excited to bring you an episode that bridges grief and travel in the most beautiful way.

We're digging into healing through travel, and how the act of travel and exploration can help us grieve, heal, and transform.

Needless to say, travel has become a transformative and healing experience in my own life, and it’s something I feel is so beneficial for anyone grieving. In this episode we explore the dualities of using travel both as a way to process grief, and as a means of emotional escapism.

You’ll hear some practical advice as a griever considering travel, and we chat about the importance of choosing the right destination, pacing ourselves, and leaning into small moments of joy.

We also dig into the therapeutic benefits of travel, how exploring new environments can help us reconnect with ourselves and the world around us, and how it offers a path to healing and personal growth.

So, I hope you enjoy this episode as I much as I did creating it! Also, I hope you have the chance to check out the Taste Toast Travel Podcast, if you feel so inclined, because we have some really fun conversations over there. If you love all things food, drink, and travel, you’re going to love it!

096. Empowering Your Legacy and Simplifying Estate & End-of-Life Planning with Adam Zuckerman of Buried in Work30 Jan 202500:53:41

Drop me a message or voice note!

Today we’re chatting with Adam Zuckerman of Buried in Work, an incredible resource that simplifies estate planning, end-of-life tasks, and estate transitions.

Might not sound like the sexiest topic in the world, right? I totally get it. But this is IMPORTANT stuff here. I speak from my own experience of going through a three year probate process after my parents died. And let me tell you, that hands down made my grieving experience worse. There were things that came up that I never wanted to deal with—or never thought I would have to. But that’s the nature of grief, and the consequences of estate planning that wasn’t at the level it should have been.

In this episode, Adam shares his emotional journey of the passing of his father that led him to create Buried in Work, and shares poignant advice and wisdom about the non-linear progress of grief.

And of course, we dig into the importance of estate planning, end-of-life tasks, and estate transitions in a way that’s actually fun and interesting. This episode will leave you with so many resources and easy ways to implement these things in your own life, or the life of a loved one.

092. Los Angeles Fires & Natural Disaster Loss and Grief13 Jan 202500:33:14

Drop me a message or voice note!

In light of the devastating fires in Los Angeles, I couldn’t help but acknowledge this with special episode of the Life With Grief Podcast.

As a Northern Californian who’s no stranger to fires and other natural disasters, this episode is not only about acknowledging the tragedy that continues unfolding and showing love to the thousands upon thousands of people affected, but to address the overwhelming grief, loss, and trauma that come with such natural disasters.

As encouraging as it is to see people coming together to provide relief, I also see a lack of empathy and quick judgments in many cases. It’s more than just losing material items. Things that, on paper, could be easily replaced. It’s livelihoods, communities, schools, homes, sentimental items, and places of comfort that are gone within a matter of hours.

Today is all about the importance of compassion, the need to acknowledge the depth of this tragedy, and understanding how grief like this runs so much deeper than we realize.

091. Creating Purpose from Pain & Loss with Zachariah Thompson of The Scatter Joy Project09 Jan 202501:12:33

Drop me a message or voice note!

Frieds, I’m beyond honored and excited to share the story of Zachariah Thompson of The Scatter Joy Project with you today.

Without giving away too much of his story, Zach's first experience with grief was when he lost his beloved uncle, Joe, when he was in 7th grade. That, and a very frightening health scare with his mom when he was 22.

Aside from having countless commonalities and a really special bond with his uncle, Zach also inherited ARVC—a hereditary heart condition that would alter his life as he knew it.

In this episode, Zach and I are digging into not only his profound story, but the dual nature of grief—grieving for lost versions of oneself, and this paradoxical grief of receiving a second chance at life. This, on top of losing dear loved ones as we both have.

Zach elaborates on the emotional spectrum we can feel as we’re grieving, ranging from anger and resentment to gratitude, all while emphasizing how these experiences have transformed his life into a profound purpose in his work within mental health with The Scatter Joy Project.

I first became familiar with The Scatter Joy Project through Instagram, ended up sharing a bunch of their content because it’s SO good, and from there I just knew I had to have Zach on with us. I know you'll love this episode as much as I do.

203. Feeling Overwhelmed by Grief? Try This Simple Practice & Unlock Healing23 Mar 202600:10:40

Drop me a message or voice note!

If your grief has been feeling especially heavy lately, I wanted to give you something real to hold onto this week.

In today’s episode of Mourning Sips & Soul Shifts on Life With Grief, I’m sharing Day 1 of my 14-Day Relief in Your Grief Experience—completely free—so you can gently step into what it feels like to be supported, grounded, and guided through your grief in a more intentional way.

This isn’t about fixing your grief or rushing your healing. It’s about creating small, consistent moments where you can come back to yourself… even when everything feels overwhelming.

Inside this episode, I walk you through one of the most important starting points in grief work: your “why.” Your why becomes your anchor: the thing you return to when emotions like anxiety, sadness, anger, or longing start to take over.

Together, we explore:
✨ How to identify your personal “why” for moving through grief
✨ Simple ways to stay accountable and supported in your healing
✨ How to build a sustainable 5–10 minute daily grief practice
✨ Creating intentional space for your emotions (without feeling consumed by them)
✨ A powerful stress + grief check-in to understand where you are today

I also guide you through a gentle meditation for grief relief, where you’ll:
💛 Focus on your breath and body awareness
💛 Allow emotions to move through you like waves
💛 Soften resistance and create space for release
💛 Connect with spiritual support—whether that’s your loved one, guides, or something bigger than you

If you’ve been feeling stuck, disconnected, or unsure of how to move forward… this is your invitation to start small.

And if this resonates with you, the full 14-Day Relief in Your Grief Experience is there to support you more deeply: https://lossesbecomegains.com/relief-in-grief

085. Why Grief Has No Timeline and Reflecting on 5 Years Without My Mom09 Dec 202400:44:32

Drop me a message or voice note!

I wasn’t planning on doing this episode this year, but frankly, I’m feeling griefy… so here we are!

The more I reflect on it being five years since my mom died, the more I realized how much my grief has truly changed in that time, how the loss of my mom was affected me short and long term, and why I’m more convinced than ever there is NO timeline on grief… and I’m spilling on why.

I’m getting REALLY raw and real here as I share the thoughts and feelings I have as I approach my mom’s “angel day”. In this episode I reflect on how my grief has evolved over the years, particularly with the arrival of my daughter this year--which has been the greatest gift, but has certainly complicated that.

Today is all about validating the myriad of emotions felt by those of us who are grieving, and how time alone truly doesn’t “heal”. I also dig into navigating this during the holiday season, especially if you’ve lost someone around this time of year, too.

Finally, we’ll chat about not adhering to a timeline or feeling pressure to move on as we acknowledge the enduring impact of grief and loss.

202. Navigating Grief, Loneliness, and Losing the People We Love with Dr. Jody Carrington19 Mar 202600:58:31

Drop me a message or voice note!

In this episode of Life With Grief, I’m joined by Psychologist, bestselling author, and globally recognized speaker Dr. Jody Carrington for an honest, raw (and funny!) conversation about grief, loneliness, and the healing power of community.

Dr. Jody sheds light on a powerful distinction between grief and mourning—two experiences that often get lumped together but play very different roles in our healing.

She shares several deeply personal losses that have shaped her own understanding of grief, including the death of her best friend, the recent passing of her father after living with vascular dementia, and the emotional complexities of caregiving and legacy at the end of life. She also shares the remarkable story of discovering at age 36 that she had a sister who had been placed for adoption.

We dig into:
✨ The difference between grief and mourning
✨ Why grief can feel more isolating in today’s world
✨ How loneliness and overwhelm intensify the grief experience
✨ Why community is essential to healing after loss
✨ Moving beyond “I’m sorry for your loss”
✨ How to support someone who is grieving
✨ The impact of caregiving and end-of-life experiences
✨ Nervous system regulation and resilience in grief
✨ Why storytelling keeps our loved ones present

If you’ve ever felt isolated in your grief, struggled to support someone you love, or wondered why loss can feel so disorienting in today’s world, this conversation will remind you that you’re not alone in your grief.

076. Minisode: The ONE Thing No One Says About Grieving07 Nov 202400:28:15

Drop me a message or voice note!

In this minisode, we’re tackling one of the most—if not THE most—overlooked aspects of grieving that I see as a Grief Coach and Educator. I can’t give it away here… you’ll just have to listen in to see what it is!But, I CAN say we’ll dig into an aspect of societal misconceptions about grieving, and of course I’ll offer up some practical tips for coping with prolonged grief. This topic is something about the grieving experience that I’m always (desperately) trying to normalize.A big takeaway today is to encourage you to integrate your loss into your life in the most meaningful, impactful way that works for YOU.
