A Thankfulness Mindset Sees Beauty in the Messiness of Life24 Nov 202500:14:05

In this special Thanksgiving week episode, host Bernie Borges explores the transformative power of thankfulness, not just as a reaction to good fortune, but as a daily mindset. Bernie shares how cultivating thankfulness can shift your perspective, help you find meaning in life’s struggles, and deepen your sense of fulfillment. Through personal reflection and practical insight, Bernie invites you to look beyond the surface of your experiences and discover the beauty in the messy, imperfect moments that shape our lives.

Three Key Takeaways:

1️⃣ Thankfulness Is a Choice, Not a Reaction
While gratitude often follows a positive event, thankfulness is a proactive mindset that helps you appreciate life, even in its most difficult seasons.

2️⃣ Fulfillment Is Found in the Journey, Not Just the Milestones
Bernie shares a personal story of sacrifice and perseverance, revealing how moments of struggle can become the most deeply fulfilling chapters of your life.

3️⃣ Daily Thankfulness Enhances Emotional and Physical Wellbeing
Research supports that consistent thankfulness leads to better health, stronger relationships, and greater life satisfaction, making it a key to a fulfilled life.

Main Takeaway
Thankfulness is a mindset that empowers you to find meaning and fulfillment in every stage of life, even during setbacks. By choosing to see beauty in the messiness, you shift from scarcity to abundance, from striving to appreciating. This daily posture of thankfulness becomes a powerful foundation for living a truly fulfilled life, rooted not in perfection but in presence and perspective.

The Untold Leadership Crisis: 85 Percent Lack Self Awareness17 Nov 202500:13:07

In the latest episode, host Bernie Borges invites you into a crucial conversation about self-awareness, why it's vital for effective leadership, and how you can develop this skill for more fulfillment in every area of your life.

Three key discussion points from the episode:

1️⃣ The Surprising Self-Awareness Gap Among Leaders
According to a Harvard Business Publishing study, only 10–15% of people are sufficiently self-aware, with less than a 30% correlation between actual and self-perceived competence. This gap negatively impacts decision-making, collaboration, and conflict management, whether at work, at home, or in your community.

2️⃣ The Values and Fulfillment Alignment Guide
Bernie shares his own journey, revealing that even when external life looked successful, he felt “off.” This led him to create the Values and Fulfillment Alignment Guide, a framework to help you rate fulfillment across health, fitness, career, relationships, and legacy, and align these with your personal values. The guide is free and designed to bring life-changing clarity, often in less than an hour.

3️⃣ Action Steps for Lasting Impact
The five-step guide asks you to:

  • Rate your fulfillment in the five life pillars
  • Identify your top values
  • Assess your alignment with those values
  • Reflect on insights gained
  • Commit to one actionable change

By embracing self-reflection with structure, leaders can foster meaningful change not just for themselves, but also for their teams, families, and broader communities.

Main Takeaway:
Becoming a self-aware leader isn’t reserved for CEOs or those with psychology degrees. It’s available to anyone willing to reflect and realign with their values. Start your journey to clarity with the Values and Fulfillment Alignment Guide.

Seagate Technology's Rebound Story through Connection, Trust and Transparency15 Sep 202500:28:55

This episode features Kristin Pascual, VP of Communications, Culture, and Community at Seagate Technology. Kristin shares the story of how Seagate faced a massive market downturn, losing 50% of revenue and 35% of its workforce, yet emerged stronger, with a renewed sense of purpose and record-high employee engagement.

Here are 3 key takeaways from our conversation:

1️⃣ Authentic, Transparent Communication Builds Trust: Even when news was tough, Seagate’s leadership prioritized in-person “Connect Sessions,” open dialogue, and myth-busting dashboards, forging trust through transparency. Leaders showed up with empathy, even admitting when they didn’t have all the answers.

2️⃣ Fulfillment Grows from Connection and Recognition: Fulfillment isn’t just a buzzword; it’s fueled by creating spaces where every employee feels seen and valued, from engineers to supporting staff. Seagate’s new recognition platform celebrated 15,000+ “moments that matter” in its first month, reinforcing community and belonging even in challenging times.

3️⃣ Human Skills are Leadership Skills: Connection, trust, and transparency aren’t “soft skills,” they’re essential leadership capabilities. Real impact comes from meeting employees where they are, actively listening, and ensuring managers recognize achievements at every level.

💡 Main takeaway: Fulfillment at work is not a destination; it's a journey shaped by struggle, growth, ownership, and shared purpose. Seagate’s experience shows that when organizations lead with empathy and genuine connection, both people and performance thrive.

Ep 161 Embrace Your Faith Journey in The Midlife Relationship Pillar29 Feb 202400:19:03

In this takeaway episode of the Midlife Fulfilled podcast, I share my key takeaway from my conversation with James Early on episode 160.

I begin with a re-introduction of James Early and his journey from stay-at-home dad to a Bible teacher and podcaster. I highlight James' point that he doesn't thump people over the head with the Bible in his teachings, and why this resonates with me.

I also share my own faith journey, how it evolved, and how studying the Bible has profoundly impacted my life.

Most of all, I explain that whatever your faith journey is, including atheism, it is part of your relationship pillar.  And, you should embrace it.

As a reminder, the five pillars of fulfillment in midlife are:
Health | Fitness | Career | Relationships | Legacy

My challenge to you is to be self-aware of this aspect of your relationship pillar, which includes your relationship with your faith journey. Embracing your faith journey as part of the relationship pillar can lead to profound fulfillment as you navigate through your forties, fifties, sixties, and beyond.

Ep 157 Level Up As an Ambassador and Fill Your Legacy Fulfillment Pillar15 Feb 202400:13:48

I'm excited to share the latest takeaway from the Midlife Fulfilled podcast in episode 157. In this episode, I dive into my conversation with Denise Gable, where we discussed the power of the "can do" mindset and the concept of "can-do-ology™.

Here are the 3 key discussion points from this conversation:

1️⃣ Embrace a Can Do Mindset.
2️⃣ Assess Your Joy Meter.
3️⃣ The Impact of Teamwork and Collaboration

Ready to level up from being a can-doer to a can-do-ologist?

A can-do-ologist is the next level up from a can-doer. This is someone who wants others to have a can-do mindset and they actively work toward spreading the can-do mindset.
They are ambassadors for the principle of a can-do mindset.

Can-do-ologists want others to have a can-do mindset because they are aware of the power of this approach to work, play, collaboration, and everyday communication.

My challenge to you is to level up from a can-doer to a can-do-ologist to bring more "can" to this world!

1️⃣ Be intentional with your money: Ashley emphasizes the importance of creating a plan for your money and being intentional with your spending.

2️⃣ Embrace accountability and community support: In her group coaching program, Ashley fosters accountability and community support, helping over 150 women create a positive impact on their finances.

3️⃣ Start small, make incremental progress: Ashley encourages people to take small steps towards financial freedom, emphasizing that incremental progress, not perfection, is the goal.

The concept that Ashley speaks of is actually a thing. It is known as the study of incremental progress. And, you can apply this principle in each of the five pillars of your life for potentially life-changing personal growth. Tune in to discover how.

My challenge to you:
In which of the five pillars do you need to remind yourself of the power of incremental progress? Are you giving yourself enough credit for the incremental progress you’re making? Maybe, you’re further along than you give yourself credit for and you can cut yourself some slack!

Ep 153 Why I Have Age Pride and You Should Too01 Feb 202400:16:18

In this takeaway episode, I discuss the takeaways from the previous episode with Carl Honoré on episode 152.

The three key discussion points from this podcast episode include:

1️⃣ The slow movement advocates for quality over quantity and emphasizes choosing the right pace for each moment, resulting in increased fulfillment.

2️⃣ The joy of missing out (JOMO) emphasizes the importance of prioritizing and doing fewer things, but doing them better. Embracing the joy of missing out allows individuals to focus on what truly matters and leads to increased productivity and fulfillment.

3️⃣ Embracing age pride: Reframing aging and embracing age pride in a culture focused on youth. The discussion addressed the significance of valuing the wisdom and experience of older individuals and the benefits of intergenerational mixing in the workplace.

My takeaway:
I have age pride and so should you. The advantages of age diversity in the workplace are huge! Varied perspectives, knowledge transfer, mentorship opportunities, enhanced collaboration, customer understanding, and reduced turnover, to name a few. Age diversity isn't just good for business; it's beneficial for all.

My challenge to you:
Let's bring the benefits of age diversity to our workplaces and communities. Whether it's a book club, sports group, or any organization, leverage the collective wisdom and fresh ideas from different generations for a more inclusive and innovative environment. Join the movement to embrace age diversity!

Building a Culture of Trust as the Foundation for Workplace Fulfillment08 Sep 202500:28:26

This week features the leadership and organizational development experts from Global Ascent Consulting Corporation (GACC). This episode explores the powerful synergy shared between GACC and the host's Fulfilled@Work Academy in bringing best practices and solutions for cultivating fulfillment in the workplace.

Joined by CEO and Founder Fredrick Smith, President Amber Heckert, Senior Consultant Loretta Monroe Calvin, and Senior Business Optimizer Billie Welchman, this episode dives into how leaders can cultivate fulfillment in their teams amidst uncertainty, focusing on the critical balance between the need for agility and the human need for stability.

Key Takeaways:

1️⃣ Cultivating Trust and Psychological Safety as Core Foundations: The experts at GACC emphasize that establishing trust and transparency is the "first and most important thing" in building resilient teams. This foundation leads directly to psychological safety, empowering individuals to be "open" and "willing to try new things to innovate."

2️⃣ Balancing Agility with Human Well-being and Stability: GACC underscores that focusing on employee well-being and helping organizations stabilize the people part of the business is paramount. Forgetting the human element leads to unsustainable growth, burnout, and attrition. People cannot "innovate, adapt, or thrive if they are constantly bracing for the next wave of disruption without a foundation to stand on.

3️⃣ Fulfillment: An Integral Part of Organizational DNA Both GACC and the Fulfilled@Work Academy strongly emphasize that fulfillment is not a perk, but is "part of the DNA of the organization." Their shared mission and approach center on "human well-being" and building "a culture where everybody feels valued." This combined effort aims to cultivate "discretionary effort" where employees go the extra mile because they are in a culture that embraces them as individuals, not just members of a herd.

Summary of the Conversation:

The experts from GACC highlight that establishing trust and transparency is paramount, creating the psychological safety necessary for teams to innovate and thrive. The conversation underscores that when employees feel valued, it leads to increased engagement, discretionary effort, and ultimately, sustainable business results.

Ep 152 Discover Carl Honoré's Insights on the Slow Movement and Overcoming Ageism29 Jan 202400:28:56

Carl Honoré is an award-winning writer, broadcaster, and TED speaker. He is the voice of the global Slow Movement. The three key discussion points from episode 152 are:

1️⃣ The slow movement is about quality over quantity. It's the art of choosing the right pace, rhythm, and tempo for each moment, ensuring that we do things not just as fast as possible, but as well as possible. As Carl describes, it's a culture quake about relearning the lost art of shifting gears, with relevance at every stage of life.

2️⃣ Embracing age pride and reframing aging is crucial in our culture of youth. Carl's latest book, "Bolder: Making the Most of Our Longer Lives," offers a spirited manifesto against ageism and reframes the narrative about growing older in the 21st century. Through mixing with different generations and assembling personal aging role models, legacy takes on new meaning, with a shift towards being of service and giving back.

3️⃣ The joy of missing out (JOMO) is a concept that underscores the importance of prioritizing and doing fewer things, but doing them better. By practicing the polite but firm brush-off and embracing the joy of missing out, we grant ourselves the freedom to focus on what truly matters, resulting in increased productivity and fulfillment.

In this episode, you'll discover the meaning of the slow movement, the power of age pride, and finding joy in missing out!

Ep 151 Embracing Unexpected Events Can Lead to Finding Purpose in Midlife25 Jan 202400:12:00

In this takeaway episode, I discuss the takeaways from the previous episode with Joe Hoye on episode 150.

Here are the key discussion points with Joe:
1️⃣ Science-based Experience.
2️⃣ The Challenges of Midlife Women.
3️⃣ Personalized Coaching.

Joe's initial plan was to offer fitness coaching to anyone interested in discovering how he lost weight and got fit. To his surprise, only women over 40 showed up. He realized that the science-based experience he received in the OBGYN hospital unit where he worked happened for a reason. He was very qualified to help midlife women lose weight and get fit.

When we reflect on life's unexpected moments, even when they are deeply disappointing and contrary to our plans, it often turns out that these moments can ultimately lead to finding purpose.

My challenge to you is to embrace these moments, even if they may seem unpleasant or unsettling at first, as they could be meant to be. Those moments might be what you need to find purpose.

Ep 150 This 29-Year-Old Man Empowers Midlife Women through Fitness22 Jan 202400:31:39

Ep 149 How Unconscious Fulfillment Can Lead to a Joyful Life18 Jan 202400:11:17

In this takeaway episode, I discuss the takeaways from the previous episode with Tim Delaney on episode 148.

Here are the key discussion points with Tim:

🔸 Chasing Fulfillment

🔸 Embracing New Opportunities

🔸 The Power of Nonprofits

Tim discovered that he was unconsciously chasing fulfillment because he didn't consider the label "fulfillment" as he pursued a life of paying it forward as gratitude for those who invested in him when he was just getting started in his career.

My challenge to you is to reflect on this question: Are you consciously or unconsciously chasing fulfillment? Repeat this question for each pillar of your midlife—health, fitness, career, relationships, and legacy.

How you answer this question can offer a compass for how you want to spend your life doing the things that fulfill you in each of these areas.

Your midlife journey is a time of maturity and transformation, and understanding what brings you fulfillment is key to thriving in this season of life.

Ep 147 You've Reached The Pinnacle When You Achieve Legacy Fulfillment 11 Jan 202400:15:52

On this takeaway episode, I discuss the takeaways from the previous episode with Genefa Murphy, Ph.D., CMO of Udemy.

I review the five key pillars of midlife fulfillment and hone in on the pinnacle pillar, legacy fulfillment. I explore the significance of impacting people's lives through lifelong learning as well as mentoring.  I suggest that if you don't have a mentee in your life who is 20 years younger than you, I encourage you to get one. Don't be surprised when you get as much out of the relationship as your mentor does.

I also encourage you to consider your legacy fulfillment goals and I openly share mine;  my aspiration to impact my immediate family, expand the reach of the Midlife Fulfilled podcast, and continue to mentor a younger individual.

I challenge you to define your legacy fulfillment goals, read them to yourself out loud, and review them regularly.

If you haven't defined your legacy fulfillment goals yet, I hope that this episode will inspire you to do so.

Ep 146 The Power of Lifelong Learning and Skills Development in Midlife08 Jan 202400:35:14

Episode 146 features Genefa Murphy Ph.D. Genefa discusses her journey to becoming a chief marketing officer, a role she held at two tech companies before joining Udemy as CMO. Genefa holds a Ph.D. in user acceptance of new technology.

Here are three key discussion points from our conversation.

1. The Power of Learning and Skills Development: Genefa highlights the trend of both technical and personal skills development as well as validation of acquired skills through badging at Udemy, supported by over 200,000 courses and more than 70,000 expert trainers to guide individuals to achieve career aspirations.

2. The Importance of Lifelong Learning: Genefa emphasizes the importance of lifelong learning. Learning new skills, particularly in midlife not only opens new opportunities but also provides confidence and a sense of fulfillment. Udemy's platform makes learning accessible to individuals and organizations.

3. Legacy Focused: After holding many leadership roles in B2B companies with many achievements, Genefa finds much fulfillment in impacting people's lives through accessibility to learning. Ep 145 Build Know, Like, and Trust for Your Midlife Career Reboot | 2 of 201 Jan 202400:19:30

Episode 145 is part 2 of my 2-part series, where I cover the 5 Steps of the Midlife Career Reboot Checklist. Download it below!  👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼

Click or tap here to download the 5 Step Career Reboot Checklist.

I review 5 steps I used to reboot my career twice in the past seven years and I've documented in my reboot workbook and one-page checklist.

Step 1: Get the product right, because YOU are the product!  Know what problem you solve and for whom, then show up on LinkedIn with a profile that shines a spotlight on your unique value proposition.

Step 2: Know THY target market! Who do you want to reach? Know their needs and pain points. Think beyond traditional job titles and embrace a broader approach to network with people who can influence your end goal.

Step 3: Engage relationally.  Build the know, like, and trust factor through consistent engagement, especially on LinkedIn. Be sure you're adding value, showcasing your expertise, and nurturing relationships.

Step 4: After building a relational foundation, it's time to ask for something.  Whether it's a meeting, a call, or a referral, timing is important. Give before asking and be patient.

Step 5: Reflect and refine. As you navigate your career reboot journey, evaluate what's working and what's not. You may need to make adjustments based on your interactions and outcomes.

These steps aren't just for career reboots—they also apply to personal branding and business development.

I'm teaming up with Erika Heald to present a one-hour live event on January 17, 2024, to help you plan your career reboot.

Ep 144 Five Easy Steps to a Midlife Career Reboot | 1 of 225 Dec 202300:18:33

Episode 144 is part 1 of a special 2-part series, where I cover the 5 Steps of the Midlife Career Reboot Checklist. Whether you're seeking a career reboot or looking to enhance your personal brand, this checklist is for you. Download it below!  👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼

Click or tap here to download the 5 Step Career Reboot Checklist.

Part 1 of 2 Key Discussion Points:

1️⃣ You Are The Product: Just as a product manager understands the features and benefits of their product, and what problem it solves, likewise you need to understand your strengths, weaknesses, and the problems you solve AND for whom. Your personal brand really matters!

2️⃣ Know Thy Target Market: Be very intentional about defining your target audience. Understand what they care about, their struggles, what they read, and events they attend, and know where you fit in addressing their needs. It's not about being all things to all people, but the right thing to the right audience.

In part 2 of this 2-part series, I'll cover the importance of reaching out and engaging relationally with your target audience, getting the meeting, and tweaking your plan for sustained success.

Related to this, I'm teaming up with Erika Heald to present a one-hour live event on January 17, 2024, to help you plan your career reboot in the new year.

Engaged Employees Drive Higher Performance through Purpose and Fulfillment01 Sep 202500:24:26

This episode features Myriam Vidalon, SVP of Culture & Workforce Transformation and Chief Diversity Officer at NielsenIQ.  We discussed how NIQ is embedding purpose into their culture, resulting in fulfilled, engaged teams with strong performance.

🗝️ Three key takeaways:

1️⃣ DEI is evolving, not disappearing. Performative DEI, where organizations just “check boxes,” is out. What matters now is authentically embedding diversity, equity, and inclusion into the fabric of company culture, driving real purpose and belonging.

2️⃣ Fulfillment is a performance strategy. When employees feel that their work is connected to a larger mission, engagement, and ultimately, performance, soar. NielsenIQ’s “Leading with Purpose” workshop is a great example of how helping teams discover their “why” fuels higher results.

3️⃣ Well-being is business-critical. Fulfillment and personal well-being are deeply intertwined. Leaders who prioritize these elements see better engagement, healthier workplaces, and measurable improvements in business performance.

Main takeaway:
When leaders embrace fulfillment as a core part of their strategy, not just a buzzword, they create engaged, high-performing teams ready for the future of work.

How is your organization embedding fulfillment and purpose into everyday work?

This episode is brought to you by the HR Leadership & Wellness Summit in Atlanta, GA, October 12-14.

Ep 141 Building a Legacy with Your Unique Skills and Talents14 Dec 202300:15:32

Welcome to my takeaway from episode 140, my conversation with Jan Ditchfield. Here is a recap of the three key discussion points from my conversation with Jan.

1️⃣ Uncover Your Unique Difference
2️⃣ Embrace the "boring" aspects of business
3️⃣ Legacy Fulfillment

If your unique talent is something that truly excites you, seek to channel your gift in your career, in a business, or in a volunteer role. If using your unique gift in a serving capacity is your preference, you do NOT have to apologize for this!

Jan’s point - which I wholeheartedly embrace - is to seek legacy fulfillment. As Jan points out, I talk about seeking to be 80% fulfilled. What I mean by this is that we have five main pillars over 40. They are health, fitness, career, relationships, and legacy. Jan says that most of her clients, who are women entrepreneurs, are empty in the legacy bucket. If you are fulfilled in four out of the five buckets, you’re 80% fulfilled and you’re doing great!

The other key discussion point from my conversation with Jan Ditchfield on episode 140 is to embrace the messy middle of systems and processes. I encourage you to think of this both literally and metaphorically.

My challenge to you is this…Do you know your unique gift, skill, talent, or expertise? If you do, are you leaning into it for legacy fulfillment? If you aren’t, do you have people in your life who can help you understand your unique gift so that you can lean into it? And, when you lean into it, are you willing to embrace the messy middle as necessary to make you better?

Ep 140 Realize Fulfillment by Channeling Your Expertise for a New Career After 4011 Dec 202300:32:40

On episode 140 I welcome Jan Ditchfield. Jan spent 20 years working in the nonprofit sector where she was responsible for producing over $20M in revenue. She is an award-winning fundraiser and now channels her expertise to help others grow their businesses, particularly online businesses, with customized advice and strategies. Jan also hosts the No BS Business School podcast, where she shares highly actionable tips to build and sell programs and services.

Following are three key discussion points from our conversation.

1. Uncover Your Unique Difference: Whether as an entrepreneur or in a corporate role, identify what makes you uniquely different and excel in that. It could be your expertise in systems, processes, marketing, sales conversations, or any other skills that make your heart race. Embrace your uniqueness and allow it to lead you to success.

2. Embrace the "boring" aspects of business—systems, processes, and workflows. Slowing down to be strategic, and enjoying the process of creating repeatable processes are essential for growing any business, including in a corporate role.

3. Legacy Fulfillment: Whether you desire to create a legacy as an entrepreneur or in a corporate career, seek fulfillment in your legacy bucket. Discover what excites you, and what makes your heart race when you talk about it, and leverage that excitement to craft a legacy that fulfills you.

Tune in to hear Jan explain why the "messy middle" is so beautiful!

Ep 139 Navigate Your Life Advice through Values Driven Decision Making07 Dec 202300:12:46

Welcome to my takeaway from episode 138, my conversation with Jenn Herman. Here is a recap of the three key discussion points from my conversation with Jenn.

1️⃣ Pursuing Fulfillment: Jenn has a full-time job, a full-time business and she is a single mom. Jenn has a passion for impacting and empowering women, advocating for their success in their careers.

2️⃣ Personal Growth and Support: Jenn discussed the immense value of mutual support and collaboration, by having a supportive network, such as a mastermind group, or a coach to provide feedback, challenge, and encouragement in business and in life.

3️⃣ Finding Balance: Jenn emphasized the significance of giving yourself grace and making choices that align with your personal fulfillment and joy.

It’s easy to be convinced that the guidance you’re getting from a friend, spouse, or coach is in your best interest. And, they probably have good intentions.

But, ultimately, it’s up to you to know what is good for you. Whatever it is in your life that you’re feeling pressure to do according to someone else’s advice, stop, pause and reflect on your values.

There is nothing wrong with someone who cares about you to challenge you. What you and I need to consider is the pace.

My challenge to you.
Are you allowing the advice of others to push you at a pace that causes you an inordinate amount of stress, or in some other way comes at a big price that you may regret? Check your values before you go through with it.

Don’t give up on this project, provided that it’s good for you. But, give yourself the grace - as Jenn says - to do it at the pace that works for you. It’s your life. It’s your fulfillment at stake. Don’t let anyone dictate to you how to achieve this fulfillment.

Ep 137 Midlife is Full of Tradeoffs on Your Journey to Joy and Fulfillment30 Nov 202300:13:12

Welcome to my takeaway from episode 136, my conversation with Sheree Clark. Here is a recap of the three key discussion points from my conversation with Sheree.

1️⃣ Courage is necessary to thrive in midlife.
2️⃣ Regrets can be valuable learning opportunities.
3️⃣ It's not about settling but compromising.

Life is full of trade-offs. If I had a dollar for every time I’ve said this, I’d have a lot of dollars just from saying this.

The truth is as we progress through our midlife seasons, we encounter more and more circumstances where compromise is simply a reality. The compromises are tradeoffs that have some meaning and purpose.

The more we progress through our midlife seasons, the more tradeoffs we end up accepting. These are compromises we willingly make for a specific reason.

So, my challenge to you is, you guessed it, what change have I reminded you of that you should consider making in your life as a trade-off that will take courage, and will give you joy or fulfillment?

Ep 136 Finding Your Courage to Thrive in the Second Half of Your Life 27 Nov 202300:29:20

On episode 136 I'm joined by Sheree Clark, a Midlife Courage Coach who calls her practice Fork in the Road.  Sheree says she became a courage coach because she believes “it takes guts to live the second half of your life for you when you’ve lived the first half for everyone else.”

The three key discussion points of our conversation are:

1️⃣ Courage is necessary to thrive in midlife. Breaking free from the expectations of others and finding the courage to live the life that brings you joy and fulfillment is essential to living your second half of life.

2️⃣ Regrets can be valuable learning opportunities. By examining your regrets, you can uncover patterns and gain insight into your decision-making processes. Regrets can teach you valuable lessons that can shape your future actions and choices.

3️⃣ It's not about settling but compromising. Rather than viewing something as settling, think of it as compromising. Life is full of trade-offs, and sometimes the compromise you make is necessary to achieve your goals and find balance in your life.

Sheree is clear to point out that midlife can be a challenging and difficult time because there is no clear playbook. It requires courage to break away from societal expectations and roles.

Sheree shares her own personal journey of leaving her advertising agency after 25 years to create space for new possibilities that bring her joy.

As a midlife courage coach, Sheree specializes in helping others identify the areas of their life where courage is needed to face and embrace changes to make in midlife to live the second half of life for you.

Tune into this episode to gain insight into your own courageous midlife journey on your own path to living the second half of your life for you.

Ep 135 Age Diversity in the Workplace is Good for Employers and Employees23 Nov 202300:14:41

Welcome to my takeaway from episode 134, my conversation with Maureen Wiley Clough.

Happy Thanksgiving if you're seeing this on November 23, 2023, in the U.S. I am very thankful to you for listening to the Midlife Fulfilled podcast!

Here is a recap of the three key discussion points from my conversation with Maureen Wiley Clough on ep 134.

1️⃣ Age diversity in the workplace contributes to innovation and better outcomes.
2️⃣ The tech industry, in particular, has a bias towards youth.
3️⃣ Awareness is the first step towards change.

As with any movement, awareness is always the first step. According to PwC, only 8 percent of organizations include age as a part of their D&I strategies.

The benefits of an age-diverse workplace are obvious. There are many examples of this.

What if SHRM created a Hall of Shame that lists companies with the worst age diversity records? No leader will want to be on this list.

Imagine if LinkedIn offered a digital badge that allows anyone to display “I support age diversity in the workplace.”

My takeaway and challenge to you is building awareness of age diversity as an economic imperative is the way to abolish age discrimination in the workplace.

Do you have examples of age diversity in the workplace that you can share as success stories? If you do, post about them on LinkedIn calling attention to age diversity as well as the successful outcome.

Ep 134 Winning the Battle Against Age Discrimination in the Workplace20 Nov 202300:32:38

On episode 134 Maureen Wiley Clough joins me for an eye-opening conversation about the reality of age discrimination in the workplace. Maureen was called a "dino" in the workplace at age 37. This was a wake-up call for Maureen.

Here are 3 key discussion points from our conversation:

1️⃣ Age diversity in the workplace contributes to innovation and better outcomes. A wide range of ages and experiences brings different perspectives and ideas to the table. It's an economic imperative for companies to embrace age diversity and create an inclusive environment.

2️⃣ The tech industry in particular, along with the corporate world, has a bias towards youth. Many young startups tend to hire and surround themselves with a predominantly young workforce. This devalues the experience and wisdom that older employees can bring. Companies should actively seek to include older workers and benefit from their wealth of knowledge.

3️⃣ Awareness is the first step towards change. By openly discussing age bias and discrimination, we can create a supportive community for those who have experienced it and work towards finding solutions. Let's celebrate getting older, challenge ageism, and improve the representation of all age groups in the tech industry and beyond.

Studies mentioned by Maureen.

Ep 133 How Collaboration Can Lead to Profound Impact in Your Life16 Nov 202300:15:07

This is my takeaway episode from my conversation with renowned Kenyan Pediatrician, Dr. Juliana Otieno on episode 132.

Here are 3 key discussion points from our conversation:

1️⃣ The Value of Education: Dr. Otieno's story highlights the transformative power of education for girls in her community in Kenya. Secondary education plays a vital role in shaping their future by offering them opportunities to thrive economically and in other ways.

2️⃣ Giving Back: Dr. Otieno has always been driven by a strong desire to give back to her community. Through her Rusalia Resource Foundation, she is providing high school education to economically disadvantaged girls in Kenya, breaking the cycle of poverty and empowering them to create positive change.

3️⃣ Power of Collaboration: By sharing her vision with her cohort at the Inspired Leadership Initiative program at Notre Dame, Dr. Otieno not only gained valuable assistance but also multiplied the impact of her foundation.

My challenge to you is don't go it alone. Collaboration can amplify your impact, whether in pursuing your legacy fulfillment or any aspect of your midlife journey.

Relationship Skills You Never Learned but Desperately Need25 Aug 202500:30:40

This week, we're featuring Adele Currin, a relationship and communication coach, for a transformative conversation about the real skills we need for thriving, fulfilling relationships. Adele opens up about her own journey through the ups and downs of marriage, and how those experiences inspired her to help others navigate their own relationship challenges.

🗝️ Three key takeaways:

1️⃣ Emotional Regulation is Foundational: Learning how to identify, sit with, and manage our emotions is the first step to healthier interactions. Without emotional regulation, issues like resentment and anger can quickly build a wall between partners.

2️⃣ Personal Responsibility Changes Everything: Adele emphasized the importance of looking inward—not just at what the other person is doing “wrong,” but at our own habits, reactions, and opportunities for growth. Taking ownership is a skill that can transform relationship dynamics.

3️⃣ Communication is Multifaceted: It’s more than just speaking your mind. True communication means listening with empathy, expressing your needs clearly and without blame, and checking for understanding. Developing these habits (not just learning the concepts!) is key to real change.

Main takeaway: Mastering relationships requires the same commitment to practice and skill-building as any area of life. With focused effort on emotional maturity, responsibility, and communication, we can create stronger, more resilient partnerships.

Ep 132 A Legacy of Leadership and Philanthropy Inspired by ILI Fellows | ILI 5 of 513 Nov 202300:35:18

On this episode, I had the privilege of interviewing retired pediatrician, Dr. Juliana Otieno in part 5 of 5 of the immersive storytelling series with the Inspired Leadership Initiative (ILI) at the University of Notre Dame.

From her childhood on a Kenyan sugarcane farm to her inspiring journey in medicine and education, Dr. Otieno's life story is as captivating as it is impactful. She shares her passion as an advocate for education for girls in Kenya, her involvement in the ILI program at Notre Dame, and how it influenced her founding of the Rusalia Resource Foundation to enable girls from economically disadvantaged families in Kenya to get a high school education.

Dr. Otieno served as the only pediatrician in a regional hospital in Kenya, ensuring proper care for children despite significant challenges related to healthcare access. Her commitment to giving back to her community is heroic.

She also became the CEO of that same hospital in Kenya, taking on immense responsibility to ensure the well-being of children in the community.

Her involvement in the ILI program at Notre Dame allowed her to connect with a diverse cohort, attend classes, and share her own story with others.

Through the ILI program, Dr. Otieno was inspired to start the Rusalia Resource Foundation. The foundation now supports 30 children and aims to increase that number to 36.

Dr. Otieno has received tremendous support from the ILI community in the U.S., helping with registration and fundraising. The foundation's impact is truly a testament to the power of collaboration and shared vision.

Dr. Otieno's story illustrates the incredible impact one person can have when driven by a deep sense of purpose and commitment to being a force for good. Her work continues to be a source of inspiration to many around the world.

When you listen to this episode you will appreciate how her story exemplifies the impact of the ILI program on one person's devotion to leadership and legacy.

Ep 131 Why Legacy Fulfillment Should be Your Top Priority in Midlife 09 Nov 202300:12:19

In this takeaway episode, I explain why my recent experience at the Inspire Leadership Initiative (ILI) annual speaker series event at the University of Notre Dame left such a lasting impression on me as I ponder my own legacy fulfillment. And, I offer you a challenge on this topic I urge you to consider.

Here are 3 key discussion points from episode 130:

1️⃣ A Strong Sense of Community: The ILI program fosters an incredible sense of community among its participants. It was inspiring to witness the deep connections and rapport among the fellows and alumni. They truly become a family, and that support continues long after the program ends.

2️⃣ Life Transformation: The ILI program goes beyond career guidance. Participants experience a profound transformation in mind, body, and spirit. They gain clarity and purpose not just for their careers but for their entire next chapter in life.

3️⃣ Being a Force for Good: The University of Notre Dame's motto, "a force for good," resonates throughout the ILI program. Everyone involved is driven to make a positive impact in the world. This mindset becomes the guiding North Star for the entire community.

Tune in to this episode to discover how I came to realize that legacy fulfillment can be the ultimate midlife pillar for us in midlife. I suggest that it is analogous to self-actualization in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.

I submit that legacy fulfillment is immutable – nothing or no one can take it away from you.

My challenge to you is to ask yourself where are you in your legacy fulfillment journey?

Ep 130 Revealing Life Transformations at Notre Dame's Inspire Leadership Initiative06 Nov 202300:20:11

On episode 130, I recap my recent experience where I had the incredible opportunity to attend the Inspire Leadership Initiative Summit at the University of Notre Dame, and it was truly an inspiring event.

Further below there is a link to a blog post explaining my recap in more detail. Here are three key highlights from my visit:

1️⃣ Strong Sense of Community: The ILI program fosters a tight-knit community among its participants. It was amazing to see the deep connections and support among the current fellows and alumni. They truly become a family, continuing to stay in touch long after completing the program.

2️⃣ Life Transformation: The ILI program goes beyond helping individuals figure out their next career chapter. The participants experience a profound transformation in mind, body, and spirit. Many find clarity and purpose for not just their careers, but their next chapter in life.

3️⃣ Being a Force for Good: Notre Dame's motto, "A force for good," resonates throughout the ILI program. The attendees, from staff to faculty to alumni, are driven to make a positive impact in the world. This mindset is truly the institution's North Star.

Ep 129 Finding Purpose and Fulfillment by Using Your God-Given Talents02 Nov 202300:14:14

In this takeaway episode, I discuss the power of using your God-given talents from my conversation with Tim Washer on episode 128. Here are three key discussion points and my summary takeaway.

1️⃣ Making a connection: Tim explains how a simple moment of humor can lead to meaningful relationships and build trust.

2️⃣ The power of laughter: It's not just about entertainment; laughter can be a powerful tool for building trust and creating positive connections.

3️⃣ Finding purpose: Tim overcame resistance and fear to find his true calling, combining comedy and communication for a fulfilling career.

Tim shared his experience stemming from a devotional that asked him to identify his spiritual gift. His response to the question was making people laugh, ie comedy. The follow-up question is on a score of 1 to 10, how would he grade himself on how good of a steward he was using this spiritual gift? This question really shook Tim. He had no choice but to score himself zero.

This reminded me of the story, known as the Parable of the Talents. 📖 In this parable from the Bible, Jesus tells a story that teaches a valuable lesson about using our talents wisely. The message is clear: faithfully using your talents is expected and rewarded, while neglecting or burying them is not acceptable.

Whether or not you're a Bible reader, the lesson still applies. We all have natural-born talents, and it's our responsibility to use them for good and make the most of our abilities.

So, my challenge to you is this: On a scale of 1 to 10, how well are you using your God-given talents? It's a question that Tim asked himself and that I asked myself too. I share my answer on this takeaway.

It's never too late to step into your calling and find fulfillment using our God-given talents.

Ep 127 Personal Development is Misunderstood Possibly to Your Detriment 26 Oct 202300:13:07

Welcome to episode 127, a takeaway episode from my conversation with Dr. Richard Mitchell on episode 126 about the power of personal development.  Three key points we discussed are:

1️⃣ Finding Fulfillment in Career Transitions
2️⃣ The Impact of Burnout on Your Personal Life
3️⃣ Pursuing Personal Development

I am convinced that personal development is not an option, especially as we navigate through our midlife seasons.  But, personal development is misunderstood. I think many people don’t really understand the meaning of personal development.

When we invest in our personal development, we’re investing in the legacy we will leave. It doesn’t have to be through a charity. It could be just in the way you treat others through a new lens as a result of self-discovery, in a personal development experience.

My Challenge to You

If you’re dealing with a lack of growth in your life, give yourself permission to explore personal development. Don’t allow some ill-conceived stigma to prevent you from taking a step to find a resource to help you on your personal development journey. You’ll be glad you did, and I can assure you those whom you impact through your growth will also be glad you took that action step.

Ep 125 Finding Midlife Mastery through The Joy of Having Fun 19 Oct 202300:14:44

Welcome to episode 125, a takeaway episode for my conversation with Heather Nawrocki on episode 124.  Three key points we discussed are:

1️⃣ Social connection is good for you.
2️⃣ Fun is for everyone at any age.
3️⃣ Fun across the 5 pillars of midlife.

I am all about helping you aim for the most fulfillment you can achieve across the five pillars of midlife: health, fitness, career, relationships, and legacy.

I think you should aim to have fun in each of these five pillars. If that sounds a little strange or maybe out of reach, I want to give you something to think about.

Each of these five pillars takes intention.

It takes intention to be mindful of your health.
It takes intention to be devoted to a fitness routine.
It takes intention to have a meaningful career.
It takes intention to have meaningful and healthy relationships.
It takes intention to plan to leave your legacy in this world.

What if we intentionally aimed to integrate at least some sort of fun into each pillar? What would that look like? Even though I can’t suggest a one size fits all approach, on this takeaway episode I take a stab at what this could look like.

Tune in and discover the possibilities of your own personal approach to integrating fun into each of the five pillars of midlife.

This week I feature Heather Nawrocki, Vice President of Fun and Fulfillment at AARP on the importance of social connection by having fun in your midlife journey. Here are three key discussion points from our conversation.

1️⃣ Social connection is good for you! Research shows that having fun enables connecting with people and it's good for your health, longevity, happiness, and a sense of contentment. No matter how you make social connections, fun plays a vital role in living our best lives as we age.

2️⃣ Fun across the 5 pillars of midlife. Fun isn't limited to just one aspect of our lives. It can touch the key pillars of midlife, including health, fitness, career, relationships, and legacy. From exercising together to volunteering, fun can touch all these areas and bring fulfillment into your life in midlife.

3️⃣ Fun is for everyone at any age. Contrary to popular belief, fun is not just for children. Ep 123 Unlocking Career Fulfillment through Volunteer Service12 Oct 202300:12:54

Welcome to episode 123, a takeaway episode sparked by my conversation with David Goad on episode 122.

🌟 Key Discussion Points from Episode 122
Embracing Transitions: David navigated three corporate layoffs and transitions, dealing with emotions ranging from fear to anger to discovering a new opportunity.

Recognizing Your Talents: A chorus of "You missed your calling" led David to recognize his intrinsic talents in speaking, coaching, and entertaining.

Learning from Mistakes: The corporate world is full of challenges, providing a treasure trove of invaluable lessons and opportunities for growth.

Pursuing Volunteer Service and Business in Separate Lanes: David demonstrated how immersing yourself in volunteer service can rejuvenate your spirit.

🎯 My Key Takeaway
When you devote time and energy to a cause that you believe in, it gives you a sense of purpose. Volunteer service provides a return to you in some way that you usually don't expect.

In my own journey, serving as the chairperson for a local high school’s Business Academy brought me returns through experiential gains in leadership, planning, delegation, conflict resolution, and spokespersonship. This experience spilled into my professional life, unexpectedly enriching it.

💡 My Challenge to You
If an opportunity to serve has knocked on your door, have you welcomed it or shied away, potentially missing a valuable, opportunity? Volunteer service may not deliver a paycheck, but it offers a sense of fulfillment, purpose, and joy derived from making a difference.

If you’re already committed to a volunteer service role, kudos to you! Maybe, this episode could be the nudge for someone in your circle to step onto their own path of volunteer service.

Finding Your Purpose & Redefining Success for a Life Fulfilled18 Aug 202501:12:33

This is a group episode featuring nine individuals who share authentic perspectives about the meaning of fulfillment in their lives. Host Bernie Borges emphasizes that fulfillment is deeper than happiness, connected to achievement or purpose, and "nearly always immutable."

🗝️ Three key takeaways:

1️⃣ Redefining Success and Fulfillment for Personal Well-being: Several participants shared transformative journeys where they shifted their definition of success from external validations like titles, promotions, or societal expectations to more intrinsic values. Nishat Jones left corporate America after 25 years to find freedom, prioritizing time with family, energy, and control, now saying "yes to purpose and no to burnout". Shanté Smith-Daniels redefined success as peace of mind, moving away from a life that felt "automated" by checking all the "successful woman" boxes, to one where her business framework is "people, profits, peace of mind." Dr. Eboni L. Truss shared her "unbecoming movement," realizing that doing "everything right" for external approval didn't bring wholeness, leading her to get honest about shedding expectations and returning to who she was truly meant to be.

2️⃣ The Power of Authenticity and Self-Relationship: The importance of deep self-reflection and prioritizing one's inner self was a common thread. Sunette Sahlah shared that her most fulfilling relationship is with herself, a realization that came after navigating divorce, her daughter leaving for college, and a career pivot. She took a year-long sabbatical to travel and "found more of me," learning not to "outsource her joy" and to ensure her own cup is full. Loretta Monroe Calvin re-evaluated her legacy after her son expressed a wish that she "didn't work so much," leading her to become more intentional about balancing work with family, health, and faith, making adjustments to ensure her children see her enjoying life.

3️⃣ Intentionality and Impact Across Life's Pillars: Guests demonstrated how living with purpose and intentionality can lead to profound fulfillment, whether in personal health, family life, or professional endeavors. David Medansky, known as "the health guy," stays connected to his purpose by reminding himself that "excellent health can never be owned, it can only be rented," motivating him to help others achieve healthy lifestyles by providing simple, affordable plans and emphasizing consistency. Ivonne Fry highlighted that "we get one shot at this" and "every day is our chance to have an impact," detailing her work with Workforce Development Partners to help high school students find hope and pathways to success, believing one person can significantly influence culture. Brent Pohlman, a CEO, shared his company's success and growth by prioritizing "people first" (over process and technology), building a culture of gratitude and trust, and actively engaging with employees to align leadership with collective purpose.

Ep 121 Creating Joy Drives Purpose and Fulfillment in Midlife05 Oct 202300:15:10

Welcome to episode 121 a takeaway episode from my conversation with Eric Wiechart on episode 120.

Eric and I had a very meaningful conversation about his experience in the Inspired Leadership Initiative (ILI) at the University of Notre Dame. Here are three key discussion points from our conversation:

1️⃣ Embrace Small Businesses
2️⃣ Overcome Transition Challenges
3️⃣ The Power of Cohort

Throughout his career, Eric acquired multiple small businesses/startups and ran them successfully. His most recent business, a glass company was transitioned to his daughter through a seven-year transition plan.

Eric didn’t want another idea for a business, or a job. Eric realized that creating joy for others gives him joy.

But, if you’ve been doing something for decades and you reach a point where you ask yourself, am I creating joy, maybe the answer to that question is not what you want it to be. It wasn’t for Eric Wiechart.

Eric realized that at this stage in his life, creating joy is his purpose. He’s doing it through many activities, not just one. He’s advising and coaching, as well as maintaining a sense of creating joy in all his relationships.

My challenge for you is to ask yourself, what role does creating joy for others play in your midlife fulfillment journey?

Ep 120 A Story of Transition from Business Owner to Leadership Coach | ILI 4 of 502 Oct 202300:32:07

Welcome to episode 120, an immersive storytelling episode about transitioning from business owner to leadership coach brought to you by the Inspired Leadership Initiative (ILI) at the University of Notre Dame.

I had the privilege of speaking with ILI Alum Eric Wiechart whose core career transitioned from working in large companies to owning and growing small businesses. In this journey, he reached a point where he wanted to transition business ownership to the next generation so he could channel his energy to a new purpose in his life, not just his career.

What he discovered as a result of going through the ILI program is a passion for coaching others, which drives joy for Eric. These three discussion points summarize our conversation.

1️⃣ Embrace Small Business: A successful career running and growing small businesses was driven by closeness to customers and the opportunity to create good jobs for people which brought Eric immense fulfillment.

2️⃣ Overcoming Transition Challenges: Transitioning from running a small business to handing it over to the next generation was a 7-year process. By committing to the Inspired Leadership Initiative (ILI) along with the guidance of outside experts, Eric was able to navigate the emotional challenge and find clarity in the midst of this transition.

3️⃣ The Power of Cohort: The ILI program provided Eric with a cohort of like-minded individuals who were also navigating their own transitions. Together, they formed a support system, offering guidance, challenges, and camaraderie. The side-by-side journey and shared experiences helped all of them grow to their next chapter in life with purpose.

When you listen to this conversation with Eric, consider the transition you seek in your own life and how it aligns with your purpose.
