189. "More protein, less sugar... no cravings!": Lori
25 Aug 2024
00:41:09
When Lori was growing up in Los Angeles, she loved all cookies, deserts, and ice cream. Every week when she got her allowance, she spent it on candy and ice cream.
Before she knew it she was getting chubby, she says. And she reached 200lbs and started suffering from depression.
Her mom tried to help her to lose weight and baked her Atkin’s low carb bread, and Lori was able to get her weight down to about 150lbs.
But Lori's weight loss battle had just begun, and her weight yo-yo'd. Like many of us, she was told not to eat fat, but sugar was okay to eat. So she continued to struggle with her weight, and got up to 225lbs in her mid 30s.
Lori was desperate. After much reading and research, she discovered keto and never looked back. By cutting sugar and wheat and eating more protein and healthy fats, Lori lost 100 lbs and has kept it off.
At 61 years old, she says she feels better than in her 20s! As a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner, Lori's mission is to serve and educate women over 50 to be empowered to choose health for natural weight loss.

179. "The diet culture made my sugar addiction worse": Siobhan
16 Jun 2024
00:37:25
From early childhood, Siobhan remembers sneaking cookies before anyone else woke up in the morning. Even as a toddler, she was never able to eat sugar in moderation. Once she hit puberty, this addiction caused her to gain weight and so she started dieting, which led to a diet/binge cycle that lasted decades.
After college, Siobhan struggled more and more with weight control and grew increasingly more frustrated around food.
She tried every diet, workout method, therapist, alternative modality and vitamin/supplement regimen known... but NOTHING worked.
It was when Siobhan found out about about food addiction that she finally decided to abstain from all sugar and all flour to really overcome her addiction.
Although she was terrified at the idea, she committed to doing it for one year, beginning in January of 2018.
In Part 1 of our chat together, listen to how Siobhan reached that initial goal, and why she has continued to commit to living a sugar-free, flour-free lifestyle for life.

088. "Now sugar is non-negotiable for me": Scott
18 Sep 2022
00:42:16
Sugar was a reward during Scott's childhood. And as a result, Scott was overweight as a child, and his mother put him on all kinds of diets. He felt like a disappointment at weigh-ins. It was a struggle to keep his weight down most of his life.
As he grew up, his mental framework was that sugar was a treat... it was fun and enjoyable and decadent.
But he also wondered: Why is something that tastes so good also so bad for me?
Plus he saw that sugar's in everything. It felt very confusing.
Then he made an important switch. Sugar became non-negotiable. And yoga became an integral part of his life.
Listen to Scott's inspiring story of how he made the switch to a whole foods diet and a mindful approach to his food, his yoga practice, and his life.

087. "Cutting sugar made me stop craving it": Gabrielle
11 Sep 2022
00:44:19
Gabrielle had leukemia as a very young child. But it wasn't until her 20s that she started to realize what some of the long term effects of chemotherapy were.
Gabrielle tells how during her younger years, her lack of knowledge about nutrition did her a disservice. Up to her her mid 20s, she'd been following the classic American diet. And she started having weight issues, even though she exercised a lot. It turns out that studies are showing that a lot of young children who had cancer are more likely to be obese.
Gabrielle says that she followed terrible dietary advice. For example, she was consuming a high amount of dairy... including drinking large amounts of milk. And she often ate ice cream. And cheese. For Gabrielle and her brother, dairy gave them physical symptoms. So she cut milk, gradually... and after about 3 months she stopped craving it. For Gabrielle, gradually replacing dairy products (and other types of foods) means she can moderate them now.
Once she was in her mid 20s, she started to learn more about functional nutrition, and adopted a more holistic approach to her health. She recognizes that the sugary foods she was hooked on as a child were the hardest to cut as an adult. But she learned to cut certain foods (and behaviours) that weren't benefitting her. 086. "Now I enjoy cooking with real, whole foods": Annie
04 Sep 2022
00:42:35
Annie chose to be vegetarian early on in her life, but unfortunately she ate a lot of processed grains rather than fruit and vegetables. She admits that she didn't really know what to focus on at that time.
"My body never felt great and my mind never really felt great", Annie told me.
It took several years of figuring out which way of eating worked for her. She tried several diets, including the keto diet which is heavy on fats and meat, with very little sugar.
Living in Wisconsin, Annie gradually became involved in local food systems, farming, and gardening. Her focus shifted to foods that could be grown and sourced locally, which naturally led to a more plant-based diet (although it still includes some meat).
Annie's learning about what makes her body feel good - and whole foods are a big part of that. And during the pandemic, like many people, Annie found that cooking at home became a bigger part of her life. But a lot of online recipes are buried in pop-ups and ads and long text, which made it frustrating to use them.
So Annie created https://recip.ly/, which is the first ad-free subscription-based recipe platform that is equitable to small creators. Bloggers and recipe developers submit their content to the platform, and get paid on a per-view basis of their recipe. Users can access unlimited recipes with zero distractions, ads, or popups on a subscription basis.
Listen to Annie's inspiring story of cutting sugar naturally through adopting a whole foods diet, and how you can use https://recip.ly/ to get all the recipes you need!

085. You can't fail at your life after sugar!
28 Aug 2022
00:20:59
I know a thing or two about failing - I've been a teacher for 30 years! But I'm not talking about passing or failing exams here.
This episode is about the feeling of failure many of us have had in the past, about our weight especially. And I blame the diet industry for manufacturing this fear of failure!
It was only when I stopped eating sugar in July 2015 that I was able to step out of this pass-fail mentality. And I created my own reality!
Fear of failure is natural when we risk doing something new - that's what learning is all about. But if we let go of an all-or-nothing perfectionist approach, and accept that the learning process (and life in general!) is IMperfect... then there is no failure!
"You can't fail - you can only learn". That's the message in this episode!

081. “For me, less sugar and fasting are forms of self-care": Michelle
31 Jul 2022
00:42:54
When Michelle was in her 30s, she got gestational diabetes when she was pregnant with her second child. She had to change her diet and she felt restricted, so after she had the baby and was told that she could eat "normally" again, she went bonkers! She would buy dozens of candy bars, eat them, and hide the wrappers. She felt so ashamed.
At 5 feet 3 inches Michelle reached 200lbs. She felt heavy, physically and mentally. She felt lost. She had pain and flare-ups in her neck and back, migraines... it was hard. And she says that the sugar and processed foods she was consuming made every day more difficult.
Michelle was never allowed sugar as a child by her "health nut" mother (her words), so she felt deprived. She feels today that it's a difficult balancing act between feelings of deprivation and dependency.
When her youngest child was about 2.5, Michelle was using calorie cutting and exercise to lose weight, but it wasn't really working. After her wellness appointment with her doctor, she made a decision to do something different.
She overheard somebody talking about intermittent fasting (IF). It sounded crazy to her! But then she did some research about it and discovered Gin Stephen's books. On January 24, 2020, Michelle started intermittent fasting. She started with a 14-hour fasting time, which was amazing because she'd been used to snacking all the time. After about 3 months, she was clean fasting 18 hours a day. In this episode, Michelle tells how her life and her health were transformed by IF.
Now Michelle enjoys non-food ways to practice self-care, including intermittent fasting.

178. : "How I got rid of my stress, fatigue, and inflammation": Claire
09 Jun 2024
00:35:27
Claire grew up in New England with European parents. She enjoyed a whole foods diet and loved fresh seasonal foods, including fruit, vegetables, and cheeses.
Processed foods didn't hold much attraction for her. She grew up loving to cook. So she didn't eat foods with added sugars.
So she didn't feel like she was missing out.
But with the stress from her job and the breakdown of her marriage, Claire suffered from debilitating adrenal fatigue. She was in her early 40s.
After many appointments with doctors, she went to see a naturopath who recommended she cut foods that include dairy, soy, and gluten to reduce her inflammation. Cutting sugar was a given.
But Claire was confused about what she could eat. She didn't feel supported. So it was hard to stick to these changes, because she didn't understand the information she was given.
It was only when Claire got the right kinds of tests that she was able to get to the root cause of her fatigue and inflammation. And she decided to educate herself and to help others.

078. "Cutting sugar helped with my IBS, SIBO, and auto-immune issues": Phoebe
10 Jul 2022
00:41:24
Phoebe Lapine knows all about irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)... and sugar!
Phoebe is the author of SIBO Made Simple, which is a must-read not just for those suffering from unwanted GI symptoms, but anyone looking to improve their gut health without sacrificing delicious food.
In this episode, Phoebe talks about her health issues, including the auto-immune disease Hashimoto's thyroiditis and its symptoms. It caused her to have a horrible skin rash, fatigue, unhealthy weight loss, disturbed digestion... Eventually she went to see a holistic practitioner and started to do an elimination diet, starting with one month excluding gluten, caffeine, alcohol... and added sugars.
After 10 years of chronic issues, Phoebe's symptoms improved dramatically. Her liver healed, her skin cleared up, her inflammation went down which meant that her auto-immune issues improved. Amazing!
Phoebe tells her inspiring story in this episode and in her book The Wellness Project.

077: "I felt like I couldn't survive much longer": Jan
03 Jul 2022
00:49:37
Jan Steele found out that she's celiac early on in life.
The transition to a gluten free diet was done by her mother because Jan was a child. Because she grew up with celiac disease, and because of the immediate physical reaction she had whenever she did eat gluten, her gluten-free habits became second nature.
When pregnancy and the exhaustion of having small children made her auto-immune issues flare up again, Jan became motivated to look after herself as a mother so that she could be there for her children.
She started with the GAPS diet (Gut and Psychology Syndrome), and the fog started to lift. As she started to feel better, she felt more motivated. She focused on real, whole foods.
De facto, she also eliminated sugar.
Everything started to get better, especially less inflammation. Listen to the inspiring story of how Jan educated herself and turned her health around.
Today, as a Nutritional therapy Consultant, Jan helps people learn to harness the power of real food, to feel better. Jan's B&B is in the beautiful Cévenne mountains, near Montpellier (France). She hosts people for holidays, allowing them to discover this beautiful region while, at the same time, ensuring that their food restrictions and sensitivities are respected to a T.

076. Gentle rant: Are you even listening??
26 Jun 2022
00:31:02
Oh I know you're listening, dear listener!
But this is a gentle rant about the intuitive eating (IE) approach. When I first found out about IE, I was so happy! I thought I'd found "my" people! Intuitive eating is all about rejecting the diet mentality, honouring your hunger, making peace with food, not restricting or obsessing, and not using food to fill your emotional needs.
The IE approach really resonated with me when I first discovered it, so I reached out to several IE experts and invited them to be on my podcast.
Imagine my dismay when every single one of them turned me down.

075. "Fermented foods changed my health and my life!": Donna
19 Jun 2022
00:48:55
Donna Schwenk first discovered the power of fermented foods when she was 41. She had just given birth to her third child prematurely, and in this episode she tells her story of how cultured (fermented) foods changed her life!
Donna tells how her body was shutting down. She had several health issues, including high blood pressure and gestational diabetes that came back as T2 diabetes several months later. She wanted to be healthy and be there to see her daughter grow up.
One day she came across information about kefir. She started making it and she would give her daughter a teaspoon of it every day. In a short time, all her daughter's preemie health issues went away.
Donna was also drinking kefir, and she started feeling so much better! So she started researching it and understanding the trillions of bacteria that live inside us... and sharing what she learned!
In this episode, Donna tells how she started making and consuming more types of cultured foods and drinks, and helping others to create wellness, including her daughter's.

074. Listener request: The marketing and advertising of sugar
12 Jun 2022
00:27:24
This episode comes from a request from a listener who asked me to talk about how advertising from the sugar industry has made us believe that sugar is a good source of energy... a necessary part of our daily diet... natural... an appetite suppressant(!) and a way to lose weight(!!)...
There are the ads from the 50s, 60s and 70s for example, where sugar was marketed as a healthy substance that would curb hunger and provide an energy boost. Of course, we know different now!
Why did sugar and its substitutes even need advertising? Well, one reason was that sugar was rationed during the Second World War, and the sugar industry needed to do something about that type of restriction so that they could get more sales.
Today, we know that sugar is unhealthy and its advertising has been shown to be deceptive. But the sugar industry is now joined by the sweetener industry, especially for keto sweeteners, to convince consumers that their products are pure and healthy... and that we need them in our lives.
And for more guidance, support, and accountability to help you let go of sugar so that your intermittent fasting lifestyle becomes easy and natural, become a member of the After Sugar Club here!

05 Jun 2022
00:58:05
This episode is a recording of a live video I did in May 2022 on the Life After Sugar Facebook page, with my friend Michelle Montone. I know that a lot of parents and grandparents listen to this podcast, and both Michelle and I are moms, so we decided to talk about the challenges of raising kids with less sugar.
You'll get some great insights from our personal experiences, as well as tips for lunches, snacks, phases, desserts, and dealing with "picky" eaters.
We also talk about being role models for our kids (which doesn't include being perfect!).

072: "Intermittent fasting helped me to quit sugar": Lucie
29 May 2022
00:46:06
Lucie found out that she's a Type 1 diabetic when she was 17. That means that the beta cells in her pancreas don't produce insulin. She had to go to the hospital where she was given insulin and told that she was insulin-dependent for the rest of her life. She felt scared and discouraged.
Back when Lucie was diagnosed, the test strips to measure her blood sugars (A1C) weren't as sensitive as they are now. Every quarter she would get her A1C checked and pick up a new prescription.
When she was diagnosed, nobody really talked to Lucy about diet. However, her parents took her to see a naturopathic doctor who advised her to lower her carbs, but it was difficult for her as a 17-year-old to maintain. The list of foods she received was based on the glycemic index (rather than the glycemic load) of specific foods.
She tried all kinds of ways of eating in order to keep her insulin needs stable, but the general message she understood as a Type 1 diabetic was: eat whatever you want, and let the insulin shots cover it. Her health care providers often cited "non-compliance" as a reason for this approach.
Listen to how Lucie became her own walking science experiment and switched to foods that nourish her without spiking her blood sugar. Plus find out how she discovered intermittent fasting and how it changed her life... and helped her cut sugar!

071. 5 mistakes people make when they want to reduce sugar (Pt 2)
22 May 2022
00:21:42
This is Part 2, continued from Episode 70, about the 5 mistakes people make when they want to reduce sugar.
Mistake #3: Replacing sugar with other types of sweeteners, or recreating desserts and similar "treats". It's fine for a transition period, but in the long term it might prevent you from making a real, deep, lasting change.
Mistake #4: Feeding your cravings. I get it: when you're in the middle of having a craving, it can feel so overwhelming! You may feel totally powerless. Your internal mental chatter is SO strong... But it is actually possible to change not just the foods that feed your cravings, but also what you say to yourself when those cravings happen. And the irony is that when you don't feed those cravings, they go away!
Mistake #5: Not taking action. "Oh, I'll start on Monday!"... or "I'm not ready"... "I can do this on my own, I don't need you to help me!"... "I can have a cheat day/meal"...

070: 5 mistakes people make when they want to reduce sugar (Pt 1)
15 May 2022
00:21:41
In my experience, a lot of people make some or all of these 5 mistakes when they want to reduce sugar.
In this episode, I talk about the first 2 mistakes:
1. Not respecting your natural personality. Here's the thing: If you respect who you are and how you already live your life, cutting sugar can be far more sustainable. You don't have to be like anyone else, and others don't need to be like you. And you certainly don't need to be like me!
2. Giving sugar a meaning. Sugar is an inanimate object. It doesn't have a personality, it doesn't have a moral value. It's not "good" or "bad" and it doesn't want to do you any harm or any good. We give it a meaning, and therefore we also have the power to change what it represents for us.

177. "Now I can find comfort without sugar": Susannah
02 Jun 2024
00:36:47
Susannah grew up with a typical North American diet. Sugar was part of that diet, and sweets were a very big part of her family's everyday life.
Susannah's mother would serve ice cream every night after dinner, and every weekend she would bake something like a cake, cookies, or a pie.
Sugar is a part of daily life, she says, and nobody thought about it.
Many years later, when her mother was in a care home with Alzheimer's, Susannah discovered that Alzheimer's is sometimes misdiagnosed Lyme disease. When she consulted for achy joints and brain fog, Susannah found out that she had Lyme disease.
So her doctor recommended she stop eating all grains, all gluten, and all sugar to reduce inflammation in her body. Which meant cutting out her favourite comfort foods.
And what Susannah had to learn next was how to find comfort from other sources. Now Susannah uses hypnotherapy and self-hypnosis to help others reduce anxiety without needing sugar.

069: "Now I'm free from pain and inflammation": Kate
08 May 2022
00:42:23
When Kate's brother passed away in his 40s from cancer, Kate felt so powerless. The acute stress triggered a physical response in her body, and her work and lifestyle made it worse. She was eating more and more processed foods... and of course, sugar!
Her joint pain, swelling and brain fog got so bad that she went to see her doctor. He sent her for some tests, but the symptoms continued.
So Kate decided to do some research herself. She discovered the auto-immune protocol (AIP), which removes potentially inflammatory foods such as grains, dairy and legumes. And sugar of course, which is one of the most inflammatory foods.
Within days, Kate started to feel better: her joints stopped aching, her swelling went down, and her brain fog cleared. It was amazing! She felt much better... but she also had to re-learn how to cook with non-inflammatory ingredients. So she started to create new recipes and now she's a Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, a Certified AIP Coach, a Certified Gluten Practitioner, a trained Chef and a cookbook author.

As a busy professional in New York, Alison followed all the healthy eating advice: she was vegetarian, ate lots of smoothie bowls and salads (all takeout!)... but she was still suffering from all kinds of symptoms and health issues. In her mid-20s, she felt like her life was crashing down on her.
She was on medication for PCOS, her hair was falling out, she had dermatitis and food sensitivities, her hormones were a wreck and her periods were painful, her digestion was terrible... That was the wake-up call for Alison.
She could no longer normalize all her symptoms. She had to do something.
Listen to how Alison took action to address not just her symptoms, but their root cause. It wasn't a smooth journey, but it did push her to change her career and become a holistic nutritionist so that she could help her family, herself, and others. She invested in her health and was able to finally heal.

When I first cut sugar and flour back in 2015, I was given a list of whole foods to help me. I realized that I didn't really know what "whole foods" were, and that my whole definition of "food" needed to change. So I started reading. I read dozens of books. Not just about sugar, but about how the food industry has got us consumers believing that their manufactured and engineered "products" are food... and that food can only be "fun" if it has sugar in it!
In this episode, I share author Robb Wolf's "food matrix" where he gives a simple way of creating hundreds (even thousands!) of combinations with unprocessed proteins, fats, vegetables, and herbs and spices.
I use his approach to make my family meals, so that I never run out of ideas. When I took sweet and starchy foods off my plate in 2015, the strangest thing happened: I realized that I wasn't getting hungry as often. That's why intermittent fasting came easily and naturally for me.
I hope this episode helps to inspire you that real foods are anything but "boring" or repetitive, and that eating yummy nutritious meals fits perfectly with an intermittent fasting lifestyle.

065. "I thought my problem was food, but in fact it was sugar": Alicia
10 Apr 2022
00:50:55
From a young age, food had always seduced Alicia. As an example, she remembers in the 80s looking forward to going out to a Chinese restaurant. She would fantasize all day about the food, then devour everything in sight until she felt sick.
Now she realizes that it was specifically sugar that led her to overconsume.
As a sporty child and teenager, Alicia began training as a competitive swimmer. She was able to eat vast quantities of food because she needed so much fuel. But this also perpetuated her unhealthy behaviour around food and led to overeating.
When she was 17, Alicia decided to take a break from competitive swimming and concentrate on her studies... and that's when she says she "ran into trouble". She realized that she didn't know how to moderate her food intake. It was almost like a drug to her.
Listen to Alicia's inspiring story about how she became so much more aware of her real hunger and satiety signals, her compulsive behaviour around food (like bingeing), and how she changed her relationship with certain types of food (including sugar). You can find Alicia here: http://www.aliciamking.com

064. Listener question: What about monk fruit and stevia?
03 Apr 2022
00:15:08
A listener recently asked me to talk about sweeteners, specifically monk fruit and stevia.
Disclaimer: I don't use either of these sweeteners... but this isn't about me! ;-)
In this episode I talk about my take on these two sweeteners. I invite you to ask yourself these questions (with no judgement, just gentle curiosity):
why am I choosing products that are sweeter than sugar?
why am I looking for sweet tastes?
what is my relationship with sweet tastes?
what other tastes can I learn to enjoy?
what is my behaviour like around sweeteners and sweet foods?
can you imagine what freedom from sugar (or sweeteners) could feel like for you?
is there any sweetness that you feel is missing in your life?
There are no wrong answers!
Plus you have my full permission to choose whatever you want to eat, including sweeteners. (P.S. It's not up to me to give you permission for anything!)

063. "If it's good for Netta, I'll give it a try": Marcia (my mum!)
27 Mar 2022
00:40:19
Today's episode is a tribute to my lovely mum, Marcia, especially as it's Mother's Day in the UK (March 27, 2022).
My mum's in her mid-70s and she tells how in 2015 when I first told her that I'd cut sugar and flour and how great I was feeling, it piqued her interest to try it too!
She'd been struggling with several health issues, and even though she recognized that eating less sugar made sense, the idea of cutting flour-based foods like bread, pastries and muesli was amazing to her. She says that she thought she was healthy, but she didn't feel it in her body.
So she asked me to send her some info, which I did and which she read. And then she decided to give it a try!
Listen to my mum's amazing discoveries and transformation in her health when she cut sugar and "stodge" (bread, pasta, pastries, rice, puddings). Not only did her digestion improve, but she had more energy and she never felt hungry. She lost the extra pounds that were making her uncomfortable, learned to navigate her way gracefully in social situations and on trips, and generally felt better!
Even if we live thousands of miles apart, "Life After Sugar" has brought us closer. My mum helps me with the tech side of my website too. Visit it here: https://aftersugarclub.com/

062. "I feel better in my 40s than I did in my 20s": Dr. Diane
20 Mar 2022
00:40:05
Dr. Diane Mueller is a functional doctor. She's passionate about helping others restore their health and passion for life. Just like many of her patients, Dr. Diane struggled with chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, migraines, extreme digestive dysfunction and chronic pain for many years. Conventional medicine, for her, was not enough.
In this episode, Dr. Diane tells how she was lucky enough in naturopathic medical school to learn about the science of the long-term harmful effects of sugar. In her own life, in 9th grade her running coach influenced her to notice that she performed much better when she wasn't consuming sugar, especially in athletics.
For years, she felt that nobody took her symptoms seriously because her lab tests came back normal. She decided to study naturopathic medicine in order to figure out why she was feeling so bad. She wanted to learn what is going on when our lab tests are normal but we still feel extremely ill. Listen to her inspiring story and to how she's helping her patients now.
Dr. Diane's journey to heal herself lead her to complete two doctorate degrees in holistic health care. She has a Doctorate degree in Naturopathic Medicine as well as a Doctorate degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. In addition, she is certified in functional medicine.

061. "I wanted to make food that could heal me": Chef AJ
13 Mar 2022
00:40:02
Chef AJ considers sugar was a drug for her. For the first 43 years of her life, she says that she was addicted to sugar and caffeine. She needed sugar to function.
But in general, the medical profession doesn't really recognize sugar addiction, so her need for massive amounts of sugar was left unchecked.
Not only was she overweight, but she also developed signs of pre-colon cancer. As a vegan, this wasn't being caused by animal products... but by the fact that she wasn't eating FOOD. When she got her diagnosis at the age of 43, she realized just how serious her addiction to this cheap, available and socially accepted this sugar "drug" is.
Listen to Chef AJ's inspiring story of how she went from not even being able to get out of bed and needing her sugar "fix" to finding freedom from her addictive behaviour.

060. "My fasts got easier the less sugar I ate": Emily
06 Mar 2022
00:31:44
Emily Harveaux's childhood was filled with sugar and sweet treats. From a very young age, she associated comfort and warmth with candy (like most of us!).
Over her lifetime Emily says that she has run the gamut of sizes as well as her relationship with food and disordered eating. Sugar was definitely part of it.
Her weight has fluctuated a lot: as much as 300lbs at one point. Now she's about 150lbs.
She always thought that sugar would always be part of her life. But it's only in the last couple of years that she has come to the realization that maybe she's done with sugar.
4 years ago, Emily discovered intermittent fasting. It helped her get her head straight about food. And it helped her understand which foods were better for her body. For her, fasting is listening. She learned to listen to her body and her real needs. She also discovered that the less sugar she ate, the easier fasting became.
And she discovered that a more meat-based (carnivore) diet, including no sugar, made her feel the best.

176. How to spot hidden sugar in cereal
26 May 2024
00:13:16
In this short episode, you'll get some consumer tips for how to spot hidden sugar in cereal.
For example:
Beware of health claims on the packaging!
Read the list of ingredients before you look at the Nutrition Facts table.
Watch out for the serving amount.
The amount of total carbohydrates does not always tell the whole story (find out why in this episode!).

059: "Now with fasting and real foods, I have an off switch!": Allison
27 Feb 2022
01:00:12
Allison would eat to cope with all her emotions. Primarily highly processed foods made from flour and sugar (bread was her thing!), especially crunchy and salty. By the time she was in her 20s, she was morbidly obese. She tried and tried to control her weight, but she never really made the connection that it was because of certain types of foods (sugar + flour). She had a gastric bypass and lost some weight, but after a while it started creeping back up again. When Allison discovered intermittent fasting, she thought she had to eat keto (which doesn't suit her). But then when she did some more research, she discovered that clean fasting was the key for her. So she stopped diet soda and sweeteners cold turkey, and then fasting and weight loss became much easier. The last frontier was when she cut processed foods and started eating real, whole foods. That's when she could feel herself getting full and she finally found the "off switch" for her eating behaviour. Find Allison here: https://yourifcoach.com/

058: "I just couldn't stop, I was so ashamed": Zippi
20 Feb 2022
00:40:44
Zippi says that she was born with a "fatal attraction" to sugar. No amount of sugar was enough for her. When she moved to Israel and became a nurse, she knew all the theory and the caloric value of different foods. So, as a nurse, the problem wasn't the knowledge. She knew what to do. The problem was applying that knowledge. She felt so ashamed, like something was seriously wrong with her, because she wanted to eat healthy, she wanted to lose weight, but she was doing exactly the opposite. It harmed her self-esteem and her self-image. When Zippi realized that she was addicted to food - more specifically junk food - it was like a light went on. With the help of a 12-step program, Zippi got the type of support and help she needed. For the first time in her life she started abstaining from sugar a white flour. Her recovery had started. She started losing weight without feeling like she was on a diet. With her experience and knowledge, she researched the science behind food addiction and became a food addiction counsellor. Now Zippi helps food addicts in Israel who eat kosher with her science-based educational program. Find Zippi here: https://www.facebook.com/zippilivneh/

057. Valentine's edition: So you think you LOVE sugar?
13 Feb 2022
00:30:39
Do you love sugar?
I certainly used to! Sugar in all its forms: chocolate, desserts, ice cream, cookies, as well as bread and pasta.
But then when I stopped eating sugar, I realized that... well, maybe it wasn't really love!
In this special Valentine's edition, I encourage you to question whether the relationship you have with sugar is really "love". Maybe it is. Or maybe you do what I used to do, and you USE sugar for all sorts of reasons: to soothe your emotions, as a stress reliever, as a coping mechanism, as a way to celebrate...
Is it really love when what you love is actually hurting you?
That's what this episode is all about. I hope you love it. :-)

056: "Sugar brought out my negative emotions": Paula
06 Feb 2022
00:33:49
Paula Yolles grew up like most people: eating sugar. Sugar was part of her daily life.
Throughout her childhood and into adulthood and parenthood, she had stomach aches, and she was constipated, with gas and bloating. Plus she put on weight, even though her family ate relatively healthy.
After an emotional divorce, Paula needed a change. But she never intended to stop eating sugar. (Who does?!)
Slowly, gradually, she changed her way of eating and started doing the emotional work that she needed to do to reconnect with herself. Cutting sugar was part of that reconnection, and it helped Paula stop spinning and giving in to the negative mind chatter which was affecting her self-esteem.
Whenever she'd slip, she would quickly notice the effect sugar had on her energy, her mood, her anger, and her relationships.
In this episode, Paula tells how she created a new relationship with her food... and herself.

055. "Just get started": 1 year later
30 Jan 2022
00:44:21
On January 31, 2021 I hit "publish" and the Life After Sugar podcast was born!
In this 1st birthday edition, I'm talking about the highlights over the last year with my special guest Dan Greef from the UK Low Carb podcast.
As we were recording this podcast, it got me thinking: Making a podcast, or reducing / cutting sugar, as with anything in life, requires one thing of us:
Just get started!
It may be easier said than done (which is why I'm here - to help you take action)... You may need help and guidance (which is why I created the 6-week Life After Sugar Program and our monthly membership the After Sugar Club)... but nothing changes if nothing changes... as testified by the guests on the podcast over the last 12 months.
And getting started is the only way to move forward!
Thank you for listening over the past year, and for all the positive reviews and messages. Here's to many more happy years of Life After Sugar!

054. From almost blind to no more diabetes meds: Gord
23 Jan 2022
00:41:08
Before January 2021, Gord Isman used food to alleviate stress, isolation, and tough emotions. He would turn to food to find solace.
Over the course of the pandemic, Gord says he started to get lazy with his eating, and would turn to pizza, Chinese food, sweets, soda, and late-night snacking. And of course, he started to gain weight.
On January 18 2021, Gord had to be taken to the hospital in an emergency. He thought that his recent rapid weight loss was a good thing. But he was also not sleeping well because he had dry mouth. He was having to go to the bathroom every 30 minutes. He just wasn't feeling right.
And then he started to lose his vision.
After blood tests and scans at the hospital, Gord was told that he was considered DKA status, in other words, in diabetic ketoacidosis. He was close to a diabetic coma and could have died.
Listen to Gord's courageous and inspiring story of how he turned his health around and is now diabetes free and medication free!

053. "I wanted to get to the heart of my problem with sugar": Debbie
16 Jan 2022
00:53:49
This week's episode is a sneak peek into our regular support calls, which I call "check-in calls". These calls allows participants to share their challenges, their wins and their aha! moments and get all the empathetic support, encouragement and accountability they need. This is where we have real, personal interactions in a safe environment.
We go way deeper than just talking about food and sugar.
Debbie joined the Life After Sugar Program after she'd tried keto, and she knew that she had to get to the heart of her problem with sugar. With her permission, I'm sharing one of her big wins during this call.
Veronica also shares her experience with mindless snacking and becoming more mindful and aware.
And Ellen shares about what attracted her to the program, even though she already has a science background. Spolier alert: it was all the info about gut health and the microbiome. She was also looking to change her habits and to her surprise, she discovered what made her cravings disappear!
If the Life After Sugar Program sounds like a good fit for you, go here. If you would like to join the monthly After Sugar Club, go here.

052. "The benefits go far beyond weight loss": Laura
09 Jan 2022
00:32:31
Laura Bonicelli grew up with Italian food in Minnesota. With home-cooked meals and surrounded by a close community, she became a chef. She created a meal delivery service to bring fresh, organic meals to people.
Her business allowed her to learn about all kinds of different needs and eating habits, and this led her to develop a meal plan for weight loss. After she closed her own restaurant, she opened her cooking club in order to teach people home cooking.
Laura realized that her own diet had become carb-based, with too much cheese and the addition of sneaky sugars. She gained about 50lbs, she had joint pain, and other niggling health issues.
So she came up with a formula for herself. Apart from the food, mindfulness is a big part of it. As a food lover, Laura is also a "moderator" who can work with portion control.
Once she changed her diet, aside from weight loss, Laura experienced so many benefits: her joint pain went away, her hair became much healthier, her skin improved, her gastro-intestinal problems stopped, her stress was lower, she could wear the clothes she used to 20 years ago, and she became all-round happier.
Listen to how Laura is helping others discover the benefits of a whole foods diet.

051. "I just can't have sugar in the house": Jen
02 Jan 2022
00:49:16
Dr. Jen Unwin is a clinical psychologist and a self-confessed lifelong carbohydrate addict. She's the author of Fork in the Road.
In this episode, she tells her own personal story about her addiction to sugar and all processed carbs. From her early childhood, through her teens and into adulthood, Jen had a love-hate relationship with food, especially sugar. Her mother was always on a diet and Jen herself started dieting at about age 16. She tried all the fad diets - all of them!
That set off an up-and-down cycle with her weight. She followed the popular advice to eat "everything in moderation", not realizing that she has the sort of brain that can't moderate certain foods (ie: refined carbs like sugar and flour).
This went on until her early 40s, when she stumbled across a book called "Escape The Diet Trap", which was basically about low carb eating.
Jen tells how her whole world changed after that, and how she now helps people who suffer with food addiction. As a medical professional, she understands food and sugar addiction because she's been there.
After working for over 30 years in the NHS, Jen now spends her time researching, campaigning and writing about sugar addiction. She is a founding member of the Public Health Collaboration, a UK charity campaigning for better public health advice.

050. "You can heal yourself with food": Vikki
26 Dec 2021
00:48:45
Vikki Jones is a former competitive athlete. She moved from the UK to the US in the 1980s and excelled in the pentathlon. She had a coach for every sport she did, as well as being supported by the US Olympic Committee.
In this episode, Vikki tells how as an athlete, she wasn't taught how to eat. Because she was so active, she would pick herself up with sugar to get quick energy. She would "carb load" before any sporting event.
When she retired from professional sports, she realized that her education in nutrition was missing, so she started to study it. In her Master's degree in human nutrition in the 90s, she was taught that fat is bad and that artificial sweeteners were better than sugar.
Only years later did Vikki read more about fats and sugars. She tells about how her own education evolved, how she started questioning what she was taught, and how she is able to help others now.
She has come to the conclusion that food is medicine, because we all need good nutrition, not just as professional athletes. Vikki also tells about her experience with long Covid, from which she still suffers today, but how looking after her own nutrition and keeping sugar to a minimum has helped her.

175. "Now I feel free from the hold sugar had on me": Danielle
19 May 2024
00:36:06
Danielle's journey with sugar started in childhood. She remembers that sugar was a massive part of her upbringing.
With her family, she always had ice cream after dinner. Sugar was always a treat. They even had a trunk in their house that had little goodie bags with sweet treats for whenever she and her brother were good.
So there was a lot of rewarding with sugar. As a child, Danielle was an extremely picky eater. She ate lots of carbs, like white pasta and rice cakes... which, she says, no doubt really put her on a blood sugar roller coaster at a very young age.
Danielle says that sugar was the coping and addictive mechanisms that had been handed down through her family line. Her mom, she explains, was someone who never felt emotions, and she used food to numb and escape. So Danielle got that pattern from her.
But then in her late twenties, Danielle started looking more deeply into her early childhood traumas and what contributed to the addictive patterning in her brain. And that was the start of an awakening for her.
Listen to Danielle describe her slow 3-year process to finally feel free from the hold sugar had on her.

049. Hormones, menopause, cancer, and sugar: Megan
19 Dec 2021
00:37:39
Megan Lifto is a nurse who's had her own health issues, including having her ovaries removed. She knew that the decrease in estrogen would affect her metabolism, and indeed her weight went up 60lbs, mostly around her belly, even though she was still active.
With the extra weight, she started to have joint pain when she bent down, as well as in her hands. Some hormone therapy (low dose estrogen) helped her lose 10lbs right away.
What does this have to do with sugar?
Well, the hormone fluctuations that Megan was experiencing also brought with them intense sugar cravings. She used ice cream or donuts to calm her pain and give her comfort... but the cravings kept coming. She was experiencing energy crashes and disturbed sleep, and her weight loss stalled.
Listen to Megan's tips for what she did and what you can do if you're suffering from hormonal swings, menopause, cancer or other related health issues.

12 Dec 2021
00:33:28
This is our special holiday edition of the Life After Sugar podcast!
This week I'm talking to Holly Howe, a Fermentation Educator, a cookbook author, photographer, and blogger. Holly's goal is to have sauerkraut fermenting in 100,000 homes... including yours!
If you're anything like I was a few years ago, you may not know much about fermented foods. Maybe you know that yogurt is fermented? Or maybe you've tasted kombucha? That's fermented too. Or sauerkraut? These are all fermented (or cultured) foods and drinks, and are therefore probiotic and good for your gut health.
In this episode, Holly shares her story and gives her recipe for fermented cranberry relish and carrot sticks. Plus I give my recipe for a happy sugar free holiday season!
And in future episodes, Holly and I will continue to demystify the world of fermentation.
Why is gut health so important? And what does sugar have to do with gut health? Listen to find out!
Download my simple guide for getting more energy with less sugar here: https://aftersugarclub.com/energy-guide/ And if you want to learn how to make your own fermented foods and drinks and make your gut happy all year round by reducing sugar, join us in the After Sugar Club here! 047. "Low carb and fasting were real game-changers": Jackie and Louise
05 Dec 2021
00:46:21
Jackie Fletcher and Louise Reynolds are the hosts of the Fabulously Keto podcast.
After starting on her low carb eating journey in May 2017 and then moving to a ketogenic way of eating in January 2018, Jackie discovered a passion for everything low carb and keto.
Jackie tells about her childhood, when she always felt left out and overweight. She tried yo-yo dieting, but she couldn't sustain it. Eventually, in her 40s, she was at her heaviest, she felt like a failure, but she didn't even go to the doctor's because she had no intention of changing what she was eating. Then she listened to the audio version of Gary Taube's book "Why We Get Fat and What To Do About It". And it had a huge impact on her, because that's when she started to understand low carb eating. She changed her diet, adopted keto, then added intermittent fasting. Now she doesn't feel like she's on a diet, even though she's aware that she needs to be mindful of how she relates to her "head hunger", which is really just an emotional want of food, and not real hunger. Her current mantra is "Food does not control me...".
Since late 2015, Louise has used low carb ketogenic way of living to address a number of health issues.
Louise talks about how she used to live with her emotional eating habits and stress in her life. Her tipping point came when she consulted a colleague who was knowledgeable about eating disorders. She'd tried all kinds of diets, and then decided to have weight loss surgery. After a severe motorcycle accident, her mom - who'd discovered low carb - suggested Louise change what she was eating in order to help with her pain and inflammation. It was the science that made sense to Louise. And indeed, she tried a low carb/keto diet, and never looked back.
