Teaching Yoga with Intention with Judith Hanson Lasater11 Oct 202100:48:06

Judith Hanson Lasater is back on the show today for the 3rd time. We chat about her 2 very significant milestones. Her newest book, “Teaching Yoga with Intention - The Essential Guide to Skillful Hands-On Assists and Verbal Communication”. She also completed 50 years of teaching yoga this July & I ask her what it's like to teach for half a century. Her evolution through this journey.

Teaching yoga with intention is a book that is for both - the yoga teacher and the yoga student. Judith addresses the importance of communication for yoga teachers. Especially communicating using the system of non-violent communication. (I had previously interviewed her about this. Listen to episode 31) & the importance of mutuality & empathy in communication.

Her book also highlights adjustments, power dynamics, difficult conversations & hands-on adjustments.

My favorite part of the book is the final section about how to become an educated student. This is a key part of the conversation that's missing in mainstream yoga. We can all use reminders of how to be a better yoga student!

Judith also shares a special 30% off coupon code for her new book in this episode. You can listen anywhere you stream your podcasts or just head to the link in my bio!

The Origins of Yoga and Its Passage Through Time with Prasad Rangnekar23 Aug 202101:04:28

As yoga teachers, knowing the origins of yoga & its passage through time is very significant. In fact, I would argue that's it's required if one teaches any aspect of yoga. Knowing this correctly is not only important but has deep cultural implications if misinterpreted.

I’ve been on the lookout for the “perfect” guest for this one. Someone who could take into account the many subtle nuances & layers that a conversation about the origins of yoga warrants.

To follow its passage through time with clarity & draw a timeline is no small feat. On the Let’s Talk Yoga podcast today, Prasad Ragnekar walks you through the origins of yoga & its passage through time with ease, clarity & humor.

Here are just a few highlights to give you a glimpse into this wonderful conversation that is a must listen if you teach yoga or love yoga in some capacity.

  • How did yoga originate?
  • What was the original goal of yoga?
  • Why the goal post of yoga has shifted?
  • What do we mean by yoga during the Vedic times? How do the Upanishads tie into this?
  • What about Patanjali’s yoga?
  • What is Hatha yoga?
  • Simplifying the link between the Vedas, Upanishads & Bhagawad Geeta.
  • The impact of British colonization on yoga
  • Do labels like classical yoga, pre-classical yoga, modern yoga etc make sense?
  • Differences between learning from a teacher versus a book

🙌🏼 And literally SO MUCH MORE…That it's not easy to squeeze into the highlights. If you've ever wanted to understand the history, origins & passage of yoga this is your podcast!

Prasad has been studying yoga since the age of 9 with over 36 years of study & sadhana. He has taught in over 18 countries & has a wonderful Youtube channel with over 350 video resources for yoga teachers.

When I started this podcast, I made a commitment to highlighting Indian yoga teacher voices as there is so much richness that is often lost in the modern yoga world. When I can bring you yoga teachers like this, it truly makes my heart full.

If you love this episode, please screenshot it, tag Prasad and me & tell us your favorite part.

The Sanskrit Channel - in conversation a Sanskrit linguist & content creator Udaya Shreyas09 Aug 202100:58:50

Do you know there’s a Sanskrit channel on YouTube that’s phenomenal?

Whether you think Sanskrit is a dead language or you’re intrigued by it. Today’s episode is fire. I’m chatting with Udaya Shreyas. A Sanskrit linguist, & the director & (much loved) host of THE SANSKRIT CHANNEL on YouTube.

We chat about the birth of his channel. Why he fell in love with Sanskrit & how he gave up a promising career at Google to become a professional YouTuber.

I also quiz Uday about some of the most popularly asked questions about Sanskrit. Like…

  • What are the origins of Sanskrit?
  • Why is Sanskrit the language of the gods?
  • What did the British rule do to Sanskrit?
  • What’s the right pronunciation of Sanskrit?
  • Significance of pronunciation in Sanskrit
  • Reasons why Sanskrit is not “mainstream”
  • Stories about the origin of the Sanskrit language
  • Why yoga sutras are interpreted in different ways
  • How do you study Sanskrit if interested?

TBH I’ve been wanting to talk to Uday for a long time. Having dabbled in YouTube myself briefly it's no small feat what he has achieved as a digital content creator. I can’t wait for you to tune in, hear his story. And as soon as you do finish the episode…make sure you do these two things…

Yamas & Niyamas – The missing Link (Part 2) with Savira Gupta27 Jul 202100:51:01

Savira Gupta is back with Part 2 of the Yamas & Niyamas. If you haven't heard part 1. Check out episode 47 before listening to this one.

If you ask anyone who’s raised in the culture of yoga. They’ll tell you they learned these aspects since childhood. Their first teachers being their mothers, grandmothers, school teachers, elders, spiritual lessons & so on… but most westerners overlook the first two limbs of yoga.

Your yamas & niyamas can be your best friends on your yoga journey. As well as your greatest teachers.  This is why most people often fear, neglect, or overlook them.

They can be nurturing, soothing and at the same time make you accountable in yoga and how you live within a society.

Yet, I find myself bewildered when people say these 2 limbs belong in the trash.

But I choose to spend my time, & energy on yoga & people who share authentic yoga for modern living.

Savira Gupta is such a teacher & human being. She's back with Part 2 of our Yamas & Niyamas on the show today. You loved Part 1 so much. Part 2 is the perfect follow-up.  Brew up your chai or cold coffee, turn up the volume & join us for this one.

3 Important Questions Yoga Teachers Ask All The Time24 May 202100:22:03

Answering 3 very important questions that every yoga teacher asks at some point... Especially right after graduating a teacher training & entering the very real world of teaching yoga. Most yoga teachers feel alone, lost & unsure of how to navigate this new world.

  1. How to draw the line between self-practice & yoga class prep as a yoga teacher?
  2. Should you only teach what you can physically do?
  3. What parts of yoga are open to interpretation? I see a lot of "yoga is whatever you want it to be"

These are just some of the things we discuss in my monthly mentorship club called the Mindful Yoga Teachers Club. If you'd like to ask your own questions & you're craving to be a part of a mentorship club like this... you're welcome to join anytime.

We meet once a month & it's just $17/month to participate. Cancel anytime. All calls are recorded & shared. So come even if you can't join live.

Understanding Post-Lineage Yoga with Theodora Wildcroft26 Apr 202100:50:44

Talking about post-lineage yoga today on the Let’s Talk Yoga Podcast with Theodora Wildcroft.

Lineage in yoga has always fascinated & frustrated me at the same time. So when I discovered Theo’s book on Post-Lineage yoga I knew I excited, curious & but also cautious. Excited & curious because lineages have played an important part in yoga’s transmission for centuries. Cautious because while having a reformist attitude is important, there’s a fine line between doing what’s right by yoga & doing what one thinks is right.

Theo’s book was refreshing & reminded me that we need to make more space for these kind of researches in modern yoga conversations. We chat about her book in details today…Here are some highlights…

  • What is post lineage yoga
  • How to identify if we’re part of a lineage or a style of yoga
  • What’s going on in post lineage yoga
  • Do women gravitate towards this practice more
  • The different audiences in yoga conferences & festivals
  • The future of post lineage yoga
  • Role of standardization
  • The role of social media & cancel culture

Role of Body Image and Feminism in Yoga with Melanie Klein20 Apr 202101:05:03

Growing up in India, I noticed a culture of body shaming, an obsession with thinness, & fair skin being the ideal standard to be considered beautiful. While my own household luckily never endorsed any of this. Body image hit me like a rock when I became a professional Bollywood dancer at the Shiamak Dance company.

Often if not always we were shamed, bullied, insulted, ridiculed & threatened with consequences if we didn’t remain or become thin. It is then as a young woman, I developed an unhealthy relationship with my own body image. It was also a big reason why a practice like yoga resonated with me SO STRONGLY.

On the podcast today, I chat with Melanie Klein about body image, feminism & yoga. I can’t think of a better expert to have this conversation with. She’s a professor of sociology, & women’s study. A thought leader, an empowerment coach, author & co-founder of Yoga & Body Image coalition

Tune in if you’ve been keen to understand this topic more! Tune in if you’re a yoga teacher who gets questions about weight loss often. Tune in if you think you need to be thin to do yoga. Tune in so you can have a healthier relationship with yourself & more…

Some episode highlights…

  • How Melanie became such a thought leader in the yoga world
  • How Melanie’s body image evolved and enhanced over time with her yoga practice
  • Resisting the system of oppression and educating ourselves
  • How do we as women take control of our own narrative?
  • Where are we today in the yoga world in terms of representation of body image
  • Tokenism for POC yoga teachers
  • How Melanie interprets yoga
  • What does it mean to be a feminist in the yoga world today?
  • How do men & male yoga teachers get involved in the conversation about feminism?
  • Melanie shares the first time she heard the term yoga body
  • The woman who have impacted Melanie’s life

Re-thinking Your Asana Practice with Rocky Heron22 Mar 202100:49:22

I chat with one of my go-to yoga teachers today, Rocky Heron. I found Rocky right after the pandemic hit in 2020. I instantly gravitated towards his approach to asana & movement. I found his classes to be well-structured, playful, mindful & authentic. Even before the podcast was born, I knew I’d have him on someday to chat about his approach.

Critical thinking is an inseparable part of yoga. Moreso nowadays. Even in our asana.  The physical practice has become the doorway through which millions find their way to yoga nowadays. While it is by no means is the all of yoga. Rocky humor my asana-related questions.

Throughout this interview, you’ll notice he takes my simple questions and spins the answers into a thoughtful, structured, compassionate way while acknowledging how the physical realm of experience is hard to contain with this or that questions. Every person is different. Every experience is unique.

We explore questions like…

  •  What is an effective asana practice?
  • Is there anything problematic in the way we move in yoga?
  • What should yoga teachers do other than yoga?
  • Role of regressions & progressions when applied thoughtfully
  • The role of Yoga Drills
  • Yoga Sequencing

And much more…Rocky is a featured teacher on Yoga International & a host of other platforms. Having dabbled in almost every style of yoga, Rocky has developed an uncanny wisdom to teaching yoga. He has a keen sense of anatomy & alignment that he leverages often in his classes. Having taught all over the world, Rocky is also a musician as well as a yoga teacher.

Savira’s sessions are created from her own experiences and journey in life where she combines the key principles of compassion, non-judgment, self-reflection, and humor and with perspective. Non-violent Communication for Yoga Teachers with Judith Hanson Lasater01 Mar 202100:46:47

Communication is central to our life. As yoga teachers, we communicate constantly through our words, actions & bodies. Yoga philosophy often shows us how to communicate compassionately. But in today's world of social media & cancel culture it can be very challenging. There's a gap between silent & spoken communication. The 'tone' of how we communicate seems to be getting increasingly hostile online & the yoga world isn't immune to this.

On the show today, I chat with repeat guest, Judith Hanson Lasater about all things non-violent communication. With 50 years of teaching experience, Judith needs no introduction to people in the yoga world. I had the pleasure of chatting with her about her book, "What we say matters, practicing non-violent communication" co-authored with her husband, Ike Lasater.

In this interview, we keep a specific focus on NVC for yoga teachers. As a student of NVC &  yoga, Judith packs a lot of wisdom about the art of nonviolent communication with grace & humility.

Episode Highlights...

  • What is non-violent communication?
  • Is NVC more significant for yoga teachers?
  • NVC is not for others but for us
  • How to engage with empathy?
  • Who is NVC for?
  • Where does violence start in communication?
  • Cancel culture in the yoga world
  • Should we respond to cancel culture in the yoga world?
  • NVC exercise live on the podcast about cancel culture
  • What are we giving our presence to? Why it matters?
  • How to ground ourselves & act from empathy
  • Difference between feeling & judgments
  • Clarity of intension
  • Updates about Judith's latest book

Whether you teach yoga or not, you will get a lot out of this episode. Hit play if you're keen on learning to communicate clearly & compassionately.

Pranayama is the yogic art of breathing. Ancient yogis knew the power & potential of our breath. They gifted us this wisdom through the practice of pranayama. But in the modern asana dominant world we sometimes don't think of pranayama beyond inhales, exhales & ujjayi breathing.

His research provides evidence for how Pranayama could promote wellbeing in health and disease. He is the Founder/Director of PranaScience Institute and was a speaker at TEDx Charleston 2015. He has published several articles, book chapters, audio albums, and books including “PranaScience: Decoding Yoga Breathing”, and “Mind Your Breathing: A Yogi’s Handbook with 37 Pranayama Exercises”

Tune into this episode if you've ever wondered...

  • What is pranayama?
  • What are the benefits of pranayama
  • How does saliva and pranayama connect
  • Latest Pranayama research
  • Women doing pranayama
  • Pranayama & pregnancy

What is Zero Waste Living & How is it Yoga with Stephanie Lentz08 Feb 202100:59:04

Exploring the connection between zero waste living & yoga on the podcast today!

Like many of you, I’m big on being a conscious consumer, reducing my carbon footprint, living a low waste lifestyle & most importantly, living my yoga in areas of my life off the yoga mat… For me, there’s no point in doing all the yoga if you can’t take it with you - into different areas of your life every day. And to be honest, I’m not perfect at doing this. But it’s a start.  I hope today’s conversation gives you some insight on how you can get to a low waste lifestyle too.

My guest today is Stephanie Lentz, owner of Scoop Market Place, a zero-waste grocery store eliminating the need for disposable packaging & significantly reduces the overall environmental impact of our community.  Stephanie took a particular interest in how her family's daily habits were impacting the planet after she became a mom and decided to make some drastic lifestyle changes.

Today she’s educating others who want to get started on their zero-waste grocery store dreams and much more. I’m really excited to have her chat with us about what it means to live this lifestyle & practical things you could start doing today…with zero fuss and very little effort.

In this conversation, you’ll hear us talk about…

  • How I connect yoga & zero waste living
  • What is a zero-waste lifestyle? Who is it for?
  • Where does one start?
  • Does it cost money to live this way?
  • The reality of recycling
  • Easy ways to cut waste in different areas of your home
  • Mistakes to avoid
  • Adopting the hassle-free approach
  • Understanding what it means to consume mindfully
  • Easy swops for your kitchen
  • Easy swops for cleaning products
  • Women’s menstrual health
  • Oral care swops
  • Zero waste for kids
  • Stephanie’s personal story
  • What low waste living is like in other places?

There’s so much in this conversation. I really hope you listen & share this with others. There are plenty of resources too. We highlight how doing zero waste living imperfectly is better than a few of us trying to do it perfectly.

Body Positive Yoga and Setting a Shame Free New Year’s Resolution with Amber Karnes22 Dec 202000:50:27

Can fat people do yoga? Oftentimes, larger-body people experience hostility in fitness environments. Amber Karnes certainly remembers how nervous she was when she first joined a yoga class. Nevertheless, her body figure and all the constant negative self-talk didn’t stop her and eventually, she got hooked on practicing yoga. She originally started to practice yoga in an effort to change her body but later realized that yoga taught her how to be in her body instead. Now, Amber teaches yoga full time and is an industry thought leader & an inspiration to many.

Get inspired as Amber shares her yoga journey, she talks about how she learned that bigger bodies can also do yoga - not just a cop-out child's pose but also hardcore asana and all other aspects of yoga.

She also shares some tips on setting up a shame-free goal for the New Year's resolution. As well as important language dos & don't for yoga teachers.

I’m truly inspired by her work which is really important, needed & missing in modern yoga culture.
