To build muscle: 1.5-1.7g per kg of body weight

Welcome back to Let's Talk Health with Mairi.  In this week's episode, we are focusing on increasing food in your diet instead of limiting food to promote wellbeing.

We are told constantly to reduce salt, sugar, and saturated fat and limit/avoid these foods. The human body and mind do not thrive under deprivation and usually, this technique doesn't work for promoting health. I want to encourage you to increase different foods in your diet, before considering taking them away.

Welcome back to Let's Talk Health with Mairi! Today I have a very VERY special podcast. One year of Let's Talk Health with Mairi! Fifty episodes! I can't believe it. I wanted to do something special for this podcast. It means a lot to me that I have reached a year and that it has grown exponentially since the start.

Every single one of you who has listened to the podcast is special to me and that is why I wanted to include some of you in this special podcast.

The meaning of health is different for everyone, and I wanted to showcase the beauty of that today. I want you to remember that being "healthy" is by your definition. There is no clinical definition of health and there is a reason for that - health is what you make it, health is how you feel it. I hope you can see that today, from the many people kind enough to share their personal meaning of health.

No matter how many scientific studies there are it will never invalidate your personal opinion of what healthy means to you. I encourage you to find your very own meaning of health and prioritize that forever. Use this podcast for a starting point or refinement of your definition.

Welcome back to Let's Talk Health with Mairi! Hello everyone, it feels like forever since I have sat down and chatted with you all. I hope you have enjoyed the festivities and had an amazing Christmas and New Year!

I am back from my break and feeling better than ever! Today, I am talking about New Year's Resolutions, how to make goals that stick, and how to make 2022 your year. These past couple of years have been hard for everyone. It's time to take life and make it yours today and every day. The new year is a perfect time to start your goals and really make a difference in your life for YOU.

I love this time of year, a fresh start and time to reevaluate your goals and hone in on what you want and what you don't want. On Hogmanay, I brought in the bells sober, with loved ones after a productive day. I prepared for the new year focusing on my goals and reflecting on 2021 with yoga, mediation, journaling, and cleaning!

I hope you get everything and more out of 2022. Let's get you started on the life you love today!

The 12 Steps for Healthy Sleep (for your reference - screenshot or copy to help you with your sleep): 

1. Stick to a sleep schedule.  Go to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time every day. We have a hard time adjusting to different sleep times and this can impair your sleep. 

2. Exercise is amazing but not before bed or late in the day. It is important to get at least 30 minutes of exercise every day but no later than 2-3 hours before bed. 

3. Avoid caffeine and nicotine. These substances are stimulants and will impair your sleep.

4. Avoid alcohol or drink in moderation and not before bed. This can result in lighter sleep and less REM sleep.

5. Avoid large meals or beverages before bed. This can interfere with sleep and cause frequent waking throughout the night. 

6. If possible, avoid medications that delay or disrupt sleep. Speak to your doctor. 

7. Don't take naps after 3 pm. Naps are great but not before 3 pm as it may disrupt your sleep later on.

8. Relax before bed. 

9. Take a hot bath. This can help reduce your body temperature which is necessary for sleep.

10. Dark bedroom, cool bedroom and a gadget free bedroom. 

11. The right sunlight exposure. Daylight is essential to healthy sleep. Get plenty of daylight during the day. When the sun goes down limit light exposure, especially LED powered lights. Listen to podcast for more tips.
