Let's Talk: GMG The Gay Sisters Tribute Show16 Jul 202400:41:03

The Gay Sisters of Chicago, Illinois became the top selling singing artists for Savoy Records In 1951, Geraldine, Evelyn and Mildred Gay went from local gospel sensations in Chicago’s Church of God in Christ community to national stardom with the release of the hit single, “God Will Take Care of You”.   They travelled the world sharing their style of Gospel Music.  Because of their release “God Will Take Care of You” it became a top seller of 1 Million copies; which is the equivalent of a Platinum Album these days.  That was unheard of in the 1950’s. •The Gay family, after moving to Chicago, IL were members and attended Elder Lucy Smith’s All Nations Pentecostal Church on the West Side.  Elder Lucy Smith was a Pentecostal pastor and faith healer and the grandmother of Little Lucy Smith (Pianist for the Roberta Martin Singers.)  The All-Nations Pentecostal church had over 3, 000 members with a weekly radio broadcast affording the Gay Sisters access to reach people all over the Midwest. •The Gay Sisters appeared with Mahalia Jackson at Carnegie Hall, recorded several sides/singles for Savoy Records during the 1950’s and, along with their brother Donald “Preacher” Gay, in the 1960’s for Rush Records Checker Records, Faith Records, and other labels. •Most recently, (2014) Geraldine Gay and her brother Donald Gay teamed for projects released by The Sirens Records. Almost to the end, Geraldine could sit down and play gospel piano in a style that combined the kinetic energy of Arizona Dranes with the whispering jazz of Thomas Dorsey & Erroll Garner. She was a magician at the keys.

Let's Talk: GMG History of Malaco Records26 Jan 202200:31:36

This episode tells a bit of Malaco Record Label's history and it's significance in the genre of Black Gospel Music.  The company started in the 1960's focused on The Southern soul sounds featuring artists who were generating a crowd that did not necessarily hit the top radio stations or fan base.  Many of the early artists were soul singers and blues singers it wasn't until Misty Blue came out and hit the charts hard then garnering the attention of this small town independent record label.  As a matter of fact that one song is said to prevent the label from going into bankruptcy.

In the 1970's the owners decided to lean into the Black gospel genere signing several quartet groups to their label, however the label's largest signing choir did not come on until the mid to late 1980's and became the label's largest selling group to date.  And that group was none other than The Mississippi Mass Choir (Organized by the Late Frank Williams of The Williams Brothers).

James C. James C. Chambers was the organizer and founder of the Ecclesiastes Community Choir; in 1988 he organized and was founder of the ECC Music Workshop (a week long seminar) culminating with the Music Workshop Choir at the end to have a recording session.  In 1990 the choir's name was changed to The Chicago Mass Choir and released their first album in 1991.

Let's Talk: GMG ECC MUSIC WORKSHOP 198812 Oct 202100:47:35
ECC MUSIC WORKSHOP was a vision James C. Chambers had to unite choirs, singers, groups, directors, song writers and musicians across Chicago, Illinois.  In 1988 that vision went into action.  At the first Workshop there were over 200 delegates who attended and participated.  The vision James had was to have contributions from around the city and to conduct various classes, trainings and collaborations.  On this show there are excerpts of the first workshop culmination.  Since the choir had rehearsals each evening following the classes and trainings the decision was to organize material to record.  Although the 1988 Mass Choir was recorded, the recording did not get released as anticipated. There was exceptional music submitted by songwriters to name a few , William Hamilton, Lonnie Hunter, Bishop J.C. White (of Connecticut), Amaaris Palmore, Abe Cooke, Brenda Joyce Moore.  The musical staff was phenomenal which included Mark Taylor, Anthony Harmon, David Brock, Tyrone Dickerson, Bryant Jones, Cameron Jarmon, Wayne Barnett, Leslie Sanders, Carlos Patterson, William Hamilton.  The directorial staff included James C. Chambers, Bryant Jones, Steven "Puff" Jones, Lonnie Hunter, Abe Cooke & Brenda Joyce Moore. If you have any questions or comments about this episode, please send an email: letstalk2gmg@gmail.com
