Why LGBTQ+ People Feel Exhausted: Masking, Code Switching & The “Game of Belonging09 Apr 202600:26:39

Send us a message

Welcome back to Let's Be Perfectly Queer Podcast, your go to LGBT Australian podcast for all things queer.

In this episode Archie sits down with wellness coach and licensed social worker Devin Scott to unpack something so many LGBTQ+ people experience, but rarely talk about: the exhaustion of masking, code switching, and trying to “belong.”

With Devin we unpack what it really means to play the “game of belonging”… and why even when you “win,” it can still feel like something’s missing.

If you’ve ever felt exhausted from being “on,” struggled to feel seen even when your life looks successful, or questioned who you really are underneath it all, this conversation is for you.

We explore:

  •  Why masking and code switching are survival tools for LGBTQ+ people
  •  The mental health impact of long-term masking (burnout 👀)
  •  Queer perfectionism and the pressure to “fit” everywhere
  •  How shame shows up and why it’s not always the enemy
  •  The difference between being accepted and actually being seen
  •  Where to start if you’re realising you’ve been “playing the game”

Because the truth is a lot of us were never taught how to exist as ourselves safely.

So we adapted. We performed. We survived.

🎧 Listen now and ask yourself… are you being yourself, or just playing the game of belonging? And until next time, stay perfectly queer!

Did Shakespeare Have a Secret Gay Lover? Queer Clues & The Fair Youth26 Mar 202600:29:36

Send us a message

Welcome back to Let's Be Perfectly Queer Podcast, your go to LGBT Australian podcast for all things queer.

This week, we’re diving into one of the biggest literary debates of all time: was William Shakespeare gay… or at least queer?

From secret lovers to “queer-coded” sonnets, we unpack the theory that Shakespeare may have had romantic or sexual relationships with men, particularly the mysterious “Fair Youth” featured in 126 of his sonnets.

We explore:

  • The Fair Youth and who he might have been
  • Shakespeare’s sonnets and their surprisingly queer themes
  • The dramatic portrait theory (involving vandalism and possible heartbreak)
  • Queer themes in plays like Twelfth Night and The Merchant of Venice
  • Why we can’t label historical figures the way we do today

We also touch on:

Are we uncovering hidden queer history  or projecting modern identities onto the past?

Because while we may never know Shakespeare’s sexuality for sure, one thing is clear: his work is filled with passion, desire, gender fluidity, and relationships that don’t fit neatly into boxes.

Whether you’re a Shakespeare fan, a queer history nerd, or just here for the drama, this episode is packed with fascinating insights, chaotic theories, and a little bit of queer speculation.

🎧 Listen now and decide for yourself, did Shakespeare have a secret gay lover?... and until next time, stay perfectly queer!

Queer and A, LGBTQ+ News & Lesbian Space Princess18 Sep 202500:27:28

Send us a message

Welcome to Let's Be Perfectly Queer Podcast, your go to LGBT Australian podcast for all things queer.

This week's we're back with one of our favourite segments "Queer and A". This is where we dive into Reddit's "Ask LGBT" threads to answer questions in the good old reddit way.

In this episode, we're tackling a range of topics:

  • Queer Allyship: Can a straight, cisgender guy paint his nails with a rainbow for Pride without it being cultural appropriation? We weigh in, sharing our thoughts and some of the top Reddit comments on the subject.
  • Family Dynamics: A trans woman asks for advice on dealing with her sister, who uses her kids as an excuse for her transphobic behavior. We discuss setting boundaries with family and the importance of not "making yourself smaller to appease her".
  • Internalised Homophobia: A 17-year-old girl struggling with her own internalized homophobia asks for advice and resources to become "more of an ally to myself".
  • Toxic Relationships: We get real about a bisexual woman's dilemma: her boyfriend is "a little homophobic," using slurs and making her feel uncomfortable

We also share some important news about a new report from LGBTQ rights group, OutRight International, revealing that politicians worldwide used anti-LGBTQ rhetoric in their campaigns last year. We reflect on the progress our community has made despite the current political climate, noting that LGBTQ people have more support and organizations now than ever before.

We also give you our opinion on "Lesbian Space Princess" currently playing in Luna Cinemas across Australia.

🎧 Grab your headphones and join us as we step into a world where Reddit questions help us feel less alone… and until next time, stay perfectly queer!

Send us a message

Welcome to Let's Be Perfectly Queer Podcast, your go to LGBT Australian podcast for all things queer.

This week, we’re diving into a hidden piece of queer history Casa Susanna.

Back in the 1950s and ’60s, when living authentically could get you arrested, Susanna Valenti and her wife, Marie Tonell, opened their home to transgender women. It was a safe place for guests where they could live as themselves with no fear and no judgment.

But before we get there, we’re also unpacking what’s been going on in Australian sport with the AFL’s latest homophobic slur scandal. We have a discussion about the culture around men’s sport, and why Mitch Brown coming out as bisexual is such a big deal.

Here’s what we cover in this ep:
🏉 The AFL scandal and how supporters use “sledging” as a Homophobia excuse
🌈 Mitch Brown’s the first AFL player past or present to come out as Bisexual
🏠 The story of Casa Susanna and the people who found sanctuary there

It’s history, sport, and queer resilience all rolled into one episode, plus a few tangents along the way (you know us).

Bisexuality & The Bible with Henry Corrigan10 Jul 202500:43:27

Send us a message

This week, in our LGBT Australian Podcast Let's Be Perfectly Queer:

Can you be bisexual and still believe in God?

In this episode of Let’s Be Perfectly Queer, Archie sits down with bisexual author and poet Henry Corrigan, whose latest queer horror novella Somewhere Quiet, Full of Light has made waves in LGBTQ+ literary circles.

Together, they explore Henry’s journey growing up Catholic, navigating religious ideas, and his decision to read the Bible cover to cover. From confronting outdated beliefs to finding unexpected hope in scripture, Henry shares how his bisexual identity and spiritual path can be intertwined.

In this episode, hear about:

  • Henry’s bestselling queer horror fiction
  • The history behind biblical interpretations of homosexuality
  • How the Bible has evolved through centuries and cultures
  • Misconceptions around Sodom & Gomorrah, Leviticus, and divine wrath
  • Henry's favourite person from the bible.
  • Henry’s powerful call for compassion, accountability, and progress in faith communities
  • How queerness and spirituality can coexist

"...reading the Bible is like talking to an older relative and getting their perspective on things. Some of it's good, some of it's bad. You can't take it as whole cloth. You've got to take it with a grain of salt and choose which teachings, which are the better teachings you want to follow"

Plus: Archie and Henry unpack how queer people are often hurt most by those who claim to act in God’s name and how reclaiming faith can be an act of resistance and radical self-love.

Fair Game: Trans athletes and the future of sports12 Mar 202600:49:56

Send us a message

Welcome back to Let's Be Perfectly Queer Podcast, your go to LGBT Australian podcast for all things queer.

In this powerful episode, we sit down with Dr. Anna Baeth and Ellie Roscher, co-authors of Fair Game: Trans Athletes and the Future of Sports, to unpack one of the most heated debates in the world right now: trans athletes in sport.

Are transgender athletes “taking over” women’s sports?
Are they stealing scholarships and medals?
Is it really about fairness and safety, or is something else going on?

We break down the biggest lies circulating in the media and politics, and look at what the actual research says. Spoiler: trans athletes make up less than 1% of participants, yet hundreds of laws have been proposed to exclude them.

In this episode we explore:

  • The data behind trans athlete participation
  • Why the “fairness” argument doesn’t hold up
  • How moral panic is manufactured
  • The role of patriarchy and capitalism in sport
  • Why controlling trans bodies is part of a bigger political agenda
  • How trans athletes can actually help create a better, more inclusive sporting future

We also talk about lived experience, what it feels like to move through sport in a transitioning body, the anxiety around locker rooms, and why movement and play are a human right.

This episode is about more than sport. It’s about bodily autonomy, media misinformation, political fear-mongering, and what happens when we actually listen to trans athletes instead of talking about them.

If you care about transgender rights, women’s sport, LGBTQIA+ inclusion, or the future of athletics, this is a conversation you need to hear.

🎧 Listen in and find out the truth about trans atheletes in sports... and until next time, stay perfectly queer!

History of the Word Queer, Jojo Siwa & Fletcher12 Jun 202500:27:01

Send us a message

This week, in our LGBT Australian Podcast Let's Be Perfectly Queer. We discuss JoJo Siwa and Fletcher. Are they rebranding or retreating?

As both artists make moves that spark conversation, changing names, scrubbing socials, and shifting their public image. We explore what it means to be visibly queer in the spotlight, especially during Pride Month. Is this a personal evolution, or a quiet fade-out at a time when visibility is more important than ever?

Then we rewind the clock with a quick crash course on the history of the word queer. Once used as a slur, queer has been reclaimed as a bold, inclusive identity by many—but not all. We explore its complex journey from insult to empowerment, and why it still sparks strong feelings within our community.

We get into:

  • Jojo Siwa & Chris Hughes
  • Fletcher's rebranding in Pride month
  • Why some platforms flagged our podcast title
  • The difference between reclaiming and erasing
  • How queer creates space without forcing a label
  • Why some still avoid the word—and why that matters

This one’s part pop culture, part personal, and all queer.

Who Were the Lesbian Avengers – And Why They Still Matter15 May 202500:39:00

Send us a message

Ever heard of the Lesbian Avengers? No, they don’t fight aliens (though honestly, we’d watch that), but they do fight for queer rights!

In this episode, we’re throwing it back to the radical roots of queer activism and shining a spotlight on the Lesbian Avengers – a group that didn’t just talk about change, they ate fire to demand it (literally).

We’re talking bold and brilliantly queer protests, and how groups like the Lesbian Avengers and Dykes on Bikes paved the way for the visibility and rights we have today. But don’t worry, it’s not all history class – we’re discussing our takes on what’s happening right now too.

Here’s what we cover in this ep:

  • The state of trans rights in the UK
  • How growing up queer in small towns hits different – and how community helps
  • Celebrity allies like Robert De Niro
  • The legacy of groups like the Lesbian Avengers and how their unapologetic activism changed the game
  • The Stan Original Series The Invisible Boys

Demystifying Transgender Experiences: A Candid Discussion with Wendy Cole01 May 202500:41:41

Send us a message

Hey Let's Be Perfectly Queer Fam! – Archie and Katie here! This week, we’re chatting with the amazing Wendy Cole, a transition mentor and coach who’s been making her mark in the trans community. Wendy takes us on a journey through her experience of transitioning in 2015, and we dive deep into how far we've come and how much work still needs to be done for trans folks, especially when it comes to support.

In this episode, Wendy opens up about:

  • The lack of support she faced when she transitioned and what the underground trans experience used to look like
  • Why gender identity and sexual orientation are hardwired in our brains, and how society often gets it wrong
  • The UK Supreme Court’s controversial stance on biological sex and what that means for trans rights
  • How Wendy is changing perspectives by bridging the gap between cisgender and transgender people through open conversations

Plus, we touch on some seriously important topics, like the importance of unity within the LGBTQ+ community, the challenges trans women face, and why it’s so crucial to educate cisgender people.

We get real about the struggles, but also the strength and resilience that come from embracing who we truly are. Wendy’s story is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to be yourself and to start living your truth, no matter how hard it seems.

🎧 Tune in to this thought-provoking conversation and let’s keep building a world of love, acceptance, and understanding. Catch us wherever you get your podcasts!

Until next time, we hope we’ve been perfectly queer,

Queer Time: Why LGBTQ+ Lives Don’t Follow Society’s Timeline17 Apr 202500:43:34

Send us a message

We’re diving into the concept of queer time — how LGBTQ+ folks often live outside traditional timelines. From transitioning and relationships to work and family, we talk non-linear journeys, pop culture icons, and why you’re not behind — you’re just on your own path.

Hey Let's Be Perfectly Queer Fam! – Archie and Katie here! This week, we’re diving headfirst into the concept of queer time — a term that might sound academic, but trust us, it’s something we’ve all felt.

Ever looked around and thought, “Why does everyone else seem further ahead in life?” Whether it’s transitioning later in life, coming out after 30, or skipping traditional milestones like marriage and kids, queer folks often walk a different path. And that’s not just okay — it’s powerful.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • Why queer timelines don’t follow society’s rules
  • Transitioning and how it reshapes your life milestones
  • Missing or delaying things like sex ed, first relationships, or starting a family
  • What feminism has to do with all this
  • The emotional impact of feeling “behind”
  • And how to embrace your own unique, non-linear timeline

We also get a little geeky (Doctor Who fans, we see you 👀), share pop culture moments from Elliot Page to Kristen Stewart, and shout out icons like Jack Halberstam, Cher, Ian McKellen and more who’ve lived their queer truth on their own terms.

Whether you’re just starting to explore your identity or you’ve been out for decades, this episode is a reminder: you’re not late — you’re on queer time.

We love hearing from you — share your own #QueerTime story with us on socials!

Until next time we hope that we have been Perfectly queer,

Hey, Let's Be Perfectly Queer fam! This week, we’re diving deep into a topic that affects so many in our community—our relationships with food, body image, and the toxic grip of diet culture.

We’re joined by Claire, a passionate dietitian and eating disorder clinician (who is also Queer!), to unpack how queerness intersects with body expectations, weight stigma, and the never-ending pressure to fit into societal norms. Signs we were Queer as Kids20 Mar 202500:33:29

Send us a message

Hey there, our wonderful Let's Be Perfectly Queer family! In this episode we’re diving into the subtle (and not-so-subtle) childhood moments that hinted at our queerness long before we had the words to describe it.

But first, big news! Western Australia just announced a $2.25 million funding boost for LGBTQIA+ services. We break down what this means, why it’s crucial, and how it helps bridge funding gaps for queer communities.

Next up, we get personal—talking about disclosure, representation, and the impact of visibility in everyday life. From missed opportunities to moments of growth, we reflect on how representation (or the lack of it) shapes our experiences and helps combat misinformation.

🎮 The Main Event: Childhood Signs of Queerness
✨ Always picking the male characters in PlayStation games? Check.
🔥 Crushing on Kim Possible, Esmeralda, or some very specific animated characters? Double check.
📺 Queer Coding in Media – How films, TV shows, and books influenced our self-discovery.
⚠️ Toxic Tropes vs. Healthy Representation – Why it matters how queerness is portrayed in media.

Every queer journey is unique—so if our experiences don’t match yours, that’s okay! Queerness exists in a vast, beautiful spectrum, and there’s no right or wrong way to be you.

💌 We want to hear from you! DM us or email letsbeperfectlyqueerpod@gmail.com and tell us:

  • What childhood moment made you go, “Ohhh… I was definitely queer”?
  • Which queer-coded character shaped your self-discovery?

Queer Superheroes in Marvel & DC: The Good, The Bad & The Erased06 Mar 202501:01:43

Send us a message

In this episode of Let's Be Perfectly Queer, we’re suiting up to tackle queer representation in the Marvel and DC universes. From Wiccan and America Chavez to Loki and Mystique, we break down who’s repping the LGBTQ+ community in Marvel and DC—and where these mega-franchises still need to do better.

But first, Katie spills all about recent queer events in Perth, including Fringe, Perth Fest, and Craft in the Park hosted by Pride Shed, a cozy monthly gathering where queer folks craft, connect, and, apparently, darn socks (shoutout to Kevin!).

We also tackle some hard-hitting global LGBTQ+ news—like Hungary’s Pride ban and the impact of politics on identity. Plus, we chat about the Australian PM showing up at Mardi Gras and why political support (or lack thereof) matters for the queer community.

It's also Western Australian State Elections so we are reminding everyone to get out and vote!

The Main Event: Queer Superheroes & Villains in Marvel & DC

💥 Wiccan, Agatha, Batwoman, America Chavez, Iceman, Loki, Deadpool & More! – Which characters bring authentic LGBTQ+ stories to the big screen, and who’s getting erased?
🔥 Straight-Washing & Tokenism – When studios downplay or erase queer identities in mainstream films.
🎭 Comic vs. Film Representation – Why are some characters queerer in the comics than in the movies?
💡 Why Representation Matters – The impact of positive queer storytelling in superhero media.

We love hearing from you! 💌 Drop us a DM or email us at letsbeperfectlyqueerpod@gmail.com and let us know:

  • What queer characters deserve more screen time?

We've received some "fan mail" (well, anonymous messages really) after our last episode, where we discussed social transitioning. Shoutout to our mystery listener! We appreciate you sharing your journey and speaking out so bravely. Your voice matters

In this episode, Katie will be reacting to some truly heart-wrenching homophobic comments we stumbled upon on a local brand's social media post. These comments were downright disgusting, and we'll be sharing a few examples (with warning!) to shed light on the ongoing challenges faced by our LGBTQ+ community. Stay tuned for Katie's responses!

We also want to take a moment to remind you about the upcoming Pride events in Perth. Despite the hate and negativity some may express, Pride is a celebration of love, acceptance, and the fight against discrimination. We are proud to promote these events and stand with the LGBTQ+ community.

In addition to our podcast, we have some exciting events on the horizon. On the 17th of November, we'll be joining Fair Day, a vibrant Pride market event with amazing food, products, art exhibitions, and entertainment. Make sure to mark your calendars.

Send us a message

This episode has a warning: there are some mentions of suicide and hate towards the LGBTQIA+ community. Skip forward to 28:10 when you hear the episode warning.

In today's episode, we dive into some news and explore the history of the rainbow flag. But before we get into that, we catch up with each other and discuss recent events like the annual Vic Park Pride fundraising event Perth Barn dance.

Moving on to the news segment, we discuss the Australian government's decision to exclude LGBTQIA questions from the 2026 census, which has faced backlash and criticism from advocates.

After the news segment, we finally delve into the history and significance of the rainbow flag, which was designed by US gay activist Gilbert Baker in 1978. Inspired by the power of symbols like the US flag, Baker wanted a new symbol that represented the LGBTQIA+ community. We discuss the colors and meanings behind each stripe on the original flag and how it gained prominence as the symbol for LGBTQIA+ pride. We also mention other flags such as the Bisexual pride flag and Transgender pride flag.

If you want to dive into the rich history and significance of the rainbow flag, and learn all about the sister flags that represent our diverse community, then hop on board this episode.

Until next time, lovelies, stay perfectly queer

The Female husbands of the 18th and 19th Century12 Feb 202600:32:29

Send us a message

Welcome back to Let's Be Perfectly Queer Podcast, your go to LGBT Australian podcast for all things queer.

In this episode, we dive into a fascinating and often forgotten part of queer history: female husbands of the 18th and 19th centuries. These were people assigned female at birth who lived as men, married women, and built lives that challenged the rigid gender norms of their time.

We explore real historical cases, what the term “female husband” meant in its historical context, and how these stories connect to modern conversations about gender identity, trans history, and queer survival. And what can their lives teach us about how gender has always been more complex than society admits?

This episode unpacks:

  • What “female husbands” were in historical records
  • How people navigated gender and identity before modern labels
  • The risks and consequences they faced
  • How queer and trans history has been recorded (and erased)
  • Why these stories still matter today

If you love queer history, transgender history, and LGBTQIA+ stories that challenge what we think we know about the past, this episode is for you.

Because queer history didn’t start recently, it’s always been here.

🎧 Listen in and find out more about the female husbands... and until next time, stay perfectly queer!

Small Talks: What is IDAHOBIT?16 May 202400:14:39

Send us a message

In this episode of "Let's Be Perfectly Queer," we delve into the significance of International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT). We'll explore its history and its profound connection to the LGBTQIA community, including why the May 17th date is so significant

Despite the strides we've made, discrimination and violence against our community persist. Instances of police violence, non-consensual medical procedures, and the  lack of LGBTQIA+ inclusion in government research highlight the ongoing challenges we face.

It's crucial for us to educate ourselves on diversity, discrimination, and the creation of safe spaces. There are actionable steps we can take to support our community, such as wearing pride pins, advocating for LGBTQIA+ inclusivity in our workplaces, and supporting queer artists and businesses.

Promoting awareness and inclusivity is essential in helping individuals struggling with their identity feel safe and accepted. Let's come together to celebrate IDAHOBIT, share our experiences, and contribute to the collective effort of building a world free from discrimination.

Debunking the National news segment on Detransitioning - Part 109 Nov 202300:42:56

Send us a message

This week on Let’s Be Perfectly Queer Podcast, we debunk and unpack the problematic Channel 7 Spotlight: De-Transitioning. Archie watched the show so you don't have to. In this episode we discuss the misinformation and harm that this media segment has caused.

So, what have we been up to? Well, we recently threw an epic Halloween party that was utterly spook-tacular, and we also cheered on our beloved Matildas during the Asian cup qualifiers. Not only did we witness some mind-blowing games, but we even caught the pre-games action, making it a double dose of pure sports awesomeness.

But hey, it's not only about sports here – it's also Pride month in Australia! There are oodles of fabulous Pride events happening all around, and guess what? We'll be at Fair Day! So, if you're in the area, come on down and say hello. We'd love to meet you!

But that's not all – we stumbled upon an amazing website called Querying the Map. Think of it as a virtual diary where people can pin their locations and share their beautiful stories. We're talking thousands of pins, each representing a unique and heartfelt experience. From proposals on Ferris wheels in Japan to stories of struggle and resilience in Russia, this platform has it all. We delve into some of the intricacies of these stories, discussing the complexity of queer life worldwide.

Navigating our queer identities can be challenging, but Querying the Map offers a beacon of support and validation. Reading these stories can make you feel less alone in your own experiences. Trust us – we've been there. And here's the best part: you can visit the website yourself and find resources in the show notes if you're seeking help. We're here for you, every step of the way.

But hold on – we're not done yet! Our main topic looks at transgender discrimination and the misinformation floating around in our beloved Australia. Brace yourself for a candid critique of a Channel 7 segment that portrayed detransitioners and the transgender community in a flawed light. Together, we'll unravel the complexity and challenges faced by those who choose to detransition, whether it involves reversing physical changes or simply adjusting their social environment.

So, my fabulous friend, if you're craving authentic queer stories, support, and some serious food for thought, this episode is an absolute must-listen. We're here to educate, inspire, and celebrate our community. Don't miss out! Hit that play button now.
