🌓 0. The start of something daunting08 Dec 202400:07:30

In this first-ever episode, I’m walking along the Gold Coast, soaking in the waves and sunshine, and hitting record to share a raw, unfiltered idea that’s both thrilling and daunting: a daily podcast.

Here’s what’s in this episode:

  • The question that sparked this daily podcast journey: "What’s your thing for 2025?"
  • Why ā€œLet’s take this outsideā€ is more than a tagline—it’s a mindset.
  • The challenge of committing to podcasting five days a week (and resisting the urge to negotiate with myself).
  • How this podcast will be scrappy, unscripted, and free of overthinking (and editing).
  • Inspiration from Jenny Blake’s daily podcast streak and how simplicity makes it work.
  • My next steps: figuring out the tech (Hello Audio, I’m looking at you!) to make this as frictionless as possible.

This podcast is all about sharing what’s on my mind in real-time—raw thoughts, behind-the-scenes moments, and a peek into life and work outside the box. No fancy production, just genuine connection.

I’d love to hear what you think! Hit me up on social media or stay tuned for a contact link in future episodes.

Wish me luck as I dive into this new adventure—one episode at a time. Let’s see where this takes us!

P.S. If you’re thinking about starting something daunting, maybe this episode is the nudge you need!

🌓 1. What's your misogi?31 Dec 202400:11:55

Leanne Hughes kicks off her daily podcast series, committing to 365 episodes in 2025.

In the inaugural episode, she expresses gratitude to listeners and invites them to share their thoughts and questions.

Inspired by the concept of Misogi, a Japanese ritual for purification and renewal, Hughes embarks on this podcasting challenge as her own Misogi for 2025.

She shares insights from Jesse Itzler's discussion on the My First Million podcast, also highlighting the importance of thrilling, important, and daunting goals that Michael Bungay Stanier shares in his book, How to Begin.

Hughes shares personal reflections on her fears and motivations, emphasising the significance of authentic content over AI-generated material.

She outlines her plan for the podcast schedule and encourages listeners to consider their own transformative challenges for the new year.

Inspired by Jesse Itzler's approach, she emphasises the importance of physical and mental decluttering.

🌓 9. Stop walking around the block to get next door feat. Steph Clarke08 Jan 202500:09:07

Today, we unpack the curious habit we all share: creating our own overwhelm. From decision-making dramas to overcomplicating simple tasks, it’s something we’re all guilty of—yes, even you!

Through relatable stories (including a dog park chat, Seth Godin's "yak shaving" metaphor, and Steph Clarke’s reflections), we explor how we often overthink, layer unnecessary complexities, and, in doing so, stall our progress.

Som fun links:

Steph Clarke's work

Seth Godin's blog article; Don't Shave That Yak!

Key takeaways for you to reflect on:

  1. Start with the big question: Do you really want to do this? Yes or no. Everything else flows from that clarity.
  2. Keep it simple: Instead of planning 10 steps ahead, ask, What’s the easiest way to take the next step?
  3. Ask better questions: Tim Ferriss’ mantraā€”ā€œWhat would this look like if it was easy?ā€ā€”is a refreshing one (when you're knee-deep in yak shaving)!

🌓 8. The two-ticket connection strategy07 Jan 202500:06:02

Today, I want to share an insightful idea that stuck with me from a Christmas lunch in 2023, hosted by my friend Kate Peardon.

At this gathering, I chatted with Nicole Dyson, an inspiring figure in education and innovation.

She suggested a brilliant strategy for enhancing relationships: whenever you're interested in an event, just buy two tickets and decide who to invite later.

This proactive approach can really help in making those catch-ups happen, whether it's a concert, stand-up comedy, or a show. It even adds an element of spontaneity and adventure into your social life.

For 2025, consider adopting this strategy—buy two tickets in advance and figure out your guest afterwards.

And remember, it's perfectly fine to go solo sometimes too!

This tip from Nicole has been a game-changer for me, and I hope it brings more joy and connection into your life as well. Speak to you tomorrow!

🌓 6. Your not-to-do-list05 Jan 202500:11:12

In this episode, Leanne Hughes dives into the concept of a 'not-to-do list,' an activity inspired by Tim Ferris that helps outline tasks and commitments you want to avoid in the future.

Leanne walks you through setting up this list using your calendar, noting which activities sparked joy and which ones didn't.

She shares personal reflections about how her list evolved over the years and how blocking time around major commitments has enhanced her productivity and work-life balance.

Key takeaways include the importance of intentional planning, setting recovery periods, and the benefits of recurring 'deep work' periods.

Leanne encourages you to evaluate your past year's engagements and make deliberate choices that align with your goals for the upcoming year, stressing the value of this exercise in providing clarity and focus.

Nir shares his career trajectory, from founding tech companies to exploring behavioural design, leading to his seminal work on building healthy habits with 'Hooked.'

He introduces 'timeboxing' as a strategy to align our schedule with our values and make purposeful use of our time. He also discusses workplace culture, the importance of planning personal activities, and the concept of 'traction' versus 'distraction.'

Key takeaways for listeners include understanding the roots of distraction, employing tactics like a distraction tracker, and fostering personal integrity by committing to one's schedule.

🌓157. Chat coming in hot05 Jun 202500:08:02

I just wrapped up a webinar for a long-time client — an organisation that delivers live, critical, and completely anonymous support via webinars.

That’s right. No faces. No names. Just silence... and a flurry of comments in the chat.

So how do you respond when the comments start rolling in — especially when the stakes are high and the people on the other side might be feeling overwhelmed, unseen, or unheard?

Today, I share the 4 archetypes I’ve created to explain the choices we have when responding to chat — in real-time, whether you're on a livestream, hosting a masterclass, or even navigating in-person Q&A.

šŸŒ€ The Fog – You miss the moment

šŸ‘€ The Birdwatcher – You see it, let it fly

šŸ‘‚ The Listener – You acknowledge, but don’t fix

šŸ—ŗ The Guide – You go there, with intention

We also talk:

  • When verbatim responses can be powerful
  • The risk of paraphrasing (and how to check in)
  • Why sometimes, the most generous thing is to not engage
  • How time and engagement form a decision-making matrix when you’re live

If you ever find yourself juggling incoming comments with a tight run sheet, this one’s for you.

Let me know which archetype you default to — and if you’ve found any hacks for managing emotional or high-stakes chat in live sessions.

Speak tomorrow!

🌓156. Clarity isn't found, it's chosen04 Jun 202500:05:36

Today's episode is all about clarity—what it gives you, and where it can trip you up.

I reflect on something powerful I heard on The Diary of a CEO with Jimmy Fallon. He shared his obsession with getting on Saturday Night Live—how he wrote it in his journal, non-negotiable, and pursued it with singular focus. That kind of energy? That’s clarity.

Right now, I’m getting that same type of clarity from my Everest Base Camp + Lobuche Peak goal. I didn’t have a weighted vest a few months ago, but now it’s part of the toolkit. Why? Because the what is set—and the how is starting to fall into place.

šŸ’„ The insight I want to share with you today?

We often get caught up in the how before we’ve decided on the what. And that’s what kills momentum.

If I had started asking ā€œhowā€ too soon, I would’ve talked myself out of this trek: no hiking experience, no elevation training, no love for leg day. But I set the what, and that decision has mobilized everything else.

So today’s encouragement is simple:

Stop asking ā€œhowā€ too soon. Get clear on what you want.

The how will come. Trust yourself to figure it out.

šŸŽ’Bonus tangent: I also rave about my new weighted vest (so many pockets!) and mention the hilarious Jimmy Fallon/Nicole Kidman clip, which you must watch if you need a mood boost. I’ll link it in the show notes.

Thanks for sticking with me through the puffing and panting—see you tomorrow!

🌓147. Mash-ups26 May 202500:05:51

Today’s episode is inspired by a night out under the stars at Brisbane’s Riverstage, where I saw Train live (highly recommend, by the way!). It got me thinking — not just about great music, but about mashups. Remixes. Genre-bending. And how we can apply that same creativity to our work.

From acoustic sets to DJ teases, to a live mashup of KT Tunstall and Razorlight (unexpected and excellent), this whole experience reminded me of something I love: contrast. And how powerful it is to combine unexpected things to create something fresh.

In this episode, I riff on:

  • šŸŽ¶ Why mashups make us pay attention
  • 🧠 The connection between music genres and your business rhythm
  • šŸ’” How you can remix your own workday, methodology, or strategy session
  • šŸ•ŗ Why I think I’m currently operating in ā€œfunk modeā€ (not that kind of funk)
  • šŸ“ø A little crowd-surfing, phone-snapping, ice-breaking concert magic from Train’s Pat Monahan

Prompt for you:

What genre are you playing in your business right now?

And what unexpected element could you mash in to make it more original, engaging — or just more you?

Let me know what you’re remixing — I’d love to hear from you.

Thanks again for tuning in. šŸŽ§

🌓57. Banh mi battles25 Feb 202500:05:00

I talk about my love for Vietnamese food and how visiting a cluster of similar stores showed me that competition isn’t something to fear—it’s an opportunity.

I recount my personal experience at different food spots where I discovered that when businesses are close together, they naturally push each other to improve.

I invite you to think about how this approach can apply to your own work or business. Instead of seeing competition as a threat, I challenge you to consider how it can signal market demand and inspire you to refine your own offerings.

Reflect:

  • How do you see competition influencing your own approach to business or creativity?
  • What small changes could you make to stand out in a crowded market?
  • Which part of my experience at the Magic Mile resonated most with you?

🌓56. Panel Party: Leanne’s secret 4Ps for hosting panel conversations24 Feb 202500:10:18

Today, I share my personal framework that has helped me host engaging and lively panel discussions.

I break it down into four essential parts that I call the 4Ps. By the end of our chat, you’ll see how a bit of preparation and a clear vision can make all the difference.

1. Philosophy

I start by explaining how having a strong vision and clear values sets the tone for your panel. I talk about why balancing diverse viewpoints and keeping the audience’s interests front and centre matters to you and your panelists.

2. Preparation

I dive into the nitty-gritty of doing your homework—researching your topic, getting to know your panelists, and crafting sharp introductions. You’ll hear how I go the extra mile to get familiar with every detail that can enhance your discussion.

3. Pre Briefing

Next, I highlight the importance of connecting with your panelists before the event. I share my approach to setting expectations through a quick email or video, ensuring that everyone’s on the same page before the spotlight hits.

4. Performance

Finally, I take you through what happens on the day. I explain how you can keep the conversation dynamic and engaging, making sure that every moment on stage truly counts.

I hope you enjoy these insights and feel inspired to try out these steps for your own panel events.

Remember, a bit of planning goes a long way in making your panel conversations memorable.

What’s one new idea from this episode that you’re excited to try out?

🌓55. Leanne's (boring) way to manage overwhelm23 Feb 202500:08:48

Hey there! Today's episode is super fresh because I've been actively putting these strategies into practice. I want to share with you my process for dealing with overwhelm, and how I've discovered that treating everything as a project brings amazing clarity.

What Overwhelm Feels Like For Me

You know those moments when you're in the shower, driving, or trying to sleep, and suddenly remember "Oh no, I didn't contact that person!" or "I forgot to respond to that email!"? When these micro-reminders keep popping up, that's my sign that overwhelm is creeping in. When I'm not overwhelmed, I'm typically proactive and on top of things. But when these little reminders start haunting me, it's time to take action.

My Key Strategy: Everything Is A Project

Here's something crucial - I don't separate work and life. Whether it's preparing for a workshop or remembering to get cash for the gardener, it all goes into one system. Why? Because these tasks all use up mental bandwidth, and the second I write them down, I feel better.

My Simple But Effective System

Want to know what works for me? Here's my process:

I use Google Sheets (I've tried Asana, Trello, but this is my favourite). Here's what I do:

  • Create columns for week beginning dates
  • List all my projects in Column A (work commitments, life goals, even my half marathon training)
  • Add at least 5 rows under each project
  • Brain dump every single micro-task, no matter how small
  • Color code and assign tasks to specific weeks
  • Transfer important tasks to my calendar
Why This Works

The magic happens when you get everything out of your head and onto the sheet. Those floating ideas that were consuming your mental RAM? They now have a home. It's like having a trusted system that lets your brain relax.

Pro Tips
  • Batch similar tasks (like recording pre-session videos)
  • Break down big projects into tiny, manageable tasks
  • Use your calendar as your commitment device
  • Give yourself fake deadlines and treat them as real
  • Don't judge tasks as too small - if it's taking up mental space, write it down
Let's Connect!

I'd love to hear your strategies for managing overwhelm. Send me a voice note on social media or email me What works for you? How do you handle those overwhelming moments?

Remember, sometimes the simplest systems are the most effective. This method might not work for everyone, but it's been a game-changer for me. Try it out and let me know how it goes!

Catch you in tomorrow's episode!

🌓52. AI, podcasting and relevance feat. Ronsley Vaz20 Feb 202500:23:57

You won’t believe what ChatGPT admitted when I asked it about its biggest fear. The answer? Irrelevance. And honestly, that hit home.

If you’ve ever wondered how to stay relevant in a world moving at lightning speed—especially with AI shaking things up—this episode is for you. I’m joined by my good friend Ronsley Vaz, the reason I started my podcast in the first place. He’s the founder of We Are Podcast and now runs Amplify AI, where he helps people like you and me leverage AI without losing our human edge.

We cover a ton of ground in this conversation, including:

šŸ”„ The crazy AI tools that are making content creation faster and smarter

šŸ”„ How Ronsley automated an entire workshop experience using AI

šŸ”„ The compression pants method (yes, really) for managing meetings

šŸ”„ Why AI isn’t replacing your expertise—but it can help you scale it

šŸ”„ The biggest mistakes people make when using AI for content

šŸ”„ A behind-the-scenes look at how I’m using AI to run a daily podcast (without losing my mind)

Plus, we dive into what it really takes to stand out when AI is making content easier than ever to produce. The game has changed, but the best voices will still rise to the top.

So if you’re thinking, Will AI make me irrelevant? or How do I actually use this stuff to my advantage?—this episode is packed with insights you can use right away.

🌓50. The labels that lock us in: What I learned seeing poet-philosopher David Whyte live18 Feb 202500:08:22

Over the weekend, I had the incredible experience of seeing poet-philosopher David Whyte live in Byron Bay. His words didn’t just land—they cut straight to the core. In this episode, I share some of his most profound passages, including a powerful take on branding and identity that shook me.

David Whyte challenges the way we see ourselves, reminding us that branding—something so many of us chase—can actually trap us. He describes it as an external mark of ownership, something that confines us rather than setting us free. And honestly? That hit hard.

I also reflect on:

✨ The tension between visibility and vulnerability—how being seen means being open to both connection and criticism.

✨ A poem called "Just Beyond Yourself," which offers a beautiful reminder about growth, letting go, and stepping into the unknown.

✨ How this experience made me rethink the evolving nature of my own brand—and what it means to show up as your real self.

This episode is for you if you’ve ever felt boxed in by your own success, a label, or an expectation—whether it’s a personal brand, a job title, or even just how others see you.

šŸŽ§ Tune in, reflect, and let me know—what part of this resonated with you?

🌓146. The rise of vibe marketing and the fall of LinkedIn?25 May 202500:06:23

Happy Monday! Today I’m riffing on a recent episode of Greg Isenberg’s Startup Ideas podcast that had my brain buzzing. I love how freely Greg and his guests share what they’re experimenting with—this time, it was all about using AI agents to automate ā€œvibe marketing.ā€

Basically, it’s like this: You prompt an agent to research top-performing content, write posts in your voice (as a conversion copywriter, no less!), and publish across platforms like LinkedIn or X… completely hands-off. Sounds wild, right?

While I’m intrigued by the idea (and I’ll be testing it this week), I’m also skeptical—especially when I think about how LinkedIn is feeling lately. Honestly? It’s been a slurry of soulless AI content. Automated comments. Robotic replies. And while it has been the best platform for my brand, I’m spending less and less time there.

Instead, I’m gravitating towards Substack. It just feels more real, more human. Like there’s still you behind the words.

I also talk about:

  • How these AI workflows could help with book research and market positioning
  • Whether books still hold their magic (spoiler: they kind of do)
  • Why building an audience still matters—even if you have an AI army
  • How I’m thinking about testing ideas on different platforms, and staying true to my voice

It’s a bit of a brain-dump episode, but hey—that’s what Leanne on Demand is all about.

Let me know what you think. Would you hand your content over to the bots?

—Leanne

🌓44. How to (legally) make $$$ off someone else’s idea 12 Feb 202500:07:17

Not all great business ideas start from scratch—some of the smartest entrepreneurs simply bolt onto existing products and services to create something even better.

Think about Jibbitz (the Crocs charms that sold for $10M) or the countless AirPods cases and accessories that piggyback off Apple’s products.

In this episode, I explore the power of piggyback innovation (also called derivative innovation), sharing examples of people who’ve turned small, complementary ideas into massive businesses. From my own Apple AirTag keyring gift to the genius of a Melbourne hotel using Uber Eats to elevate its guest experience, we’ll uncover how small tweaks can lead to big wins.

Could your next big idea already be sitting inside a product you use daily?

What You’ll Learn in This Episode:

āœ… How a stay-at-home mum turned Crocs charms into a $10M business

āœ… Why innovation isn’t always about creating something new—but improving what already exists

āœ… Examples of everyday products and services that have spawned billion-dollar bolt-on businesses

āœ… A surprising Amazon discovery that made me rethink my own product strategy

āœ… How a boutique hotel in Melbourne piggybacked off Uber Eats to enhance customer experience

Listener Prompts:

šŸ”¹ What’s a product you use every day that could be improved with a simple add-on?

šŸ”¹ Can you think of a trend or product that lacks a secondary market—but should have one?

šŸ”¹ What’s something you’ve hacked together for yourself that others might pay for?

This 46 page book proposal word doc has just sat on my desktop since 2022... today's the day I share it with you!

As I revisit some of its core concepts, I reflect on why it didn't materialise and what might still be relevant today.

The proposed book, tentatively titled 'Discoverability' or 'Charismatic Change', aims to revolutionise change management by promoting swift, effective, and charismatic change rather than traditional, slow approaches.

I'll share a few key chapters and ideas, such as why 'Change Succeeds Only When People Change Too' and the importance of 'Working in Public'. T

his episode encourages you to examine your own dormant goals and think about what might deserve a second look.

What you'll learn:

  • How a bold, unconventional CEO shaped a 25-year-old's entire approach to business and creativity

  • Wanting to break free from analysis paralysis

This is just part one of my story about John Webb, a leader who handed me the keys to both a Porsche and my professional growth.

Whether you're a leader yourself or aspiring to make an impact, these lessons might just change how you approach your next big idea.

I'd love to hear about the leaders who've transformed your own journey.

We often talk about confidence, success, and reaching our full potential, but there's a hidden force that quietly undermines all of that: low self-esteem.

In this Talk the Walk livestream, Alan Weiss and I explore the unspoken impact low self-esteem has on your career, relationships, and personal growth.Ā

We'll explore how this silent saboteur shows up in everyday decisions, keeps you playing small, and robs you of opportunities you might not even realise you're missing.

But it’s not all doom and gloom!

🌓38. Confirmation culture06 Feb 202500:05:31

Let me introduce a new concept I coined - 'confirmation culture.'

We'll delve into the rise of this phenomenon, comparing it to the well-known cancel culture, though it's quite different at its core.

You’ll hear about my personal experiences with excessive appointment confirmations, and how this mirrors the rise of 'ghosting' in our society.

I'll also share insights on how confirmation culture impacts everything from job applications to business operations, and propose solutions like smarter tech automations.

You’ll relate if you’ve ever been swamped by automated texts or emails, and we’ll explore how we can balance reliability and efficiency.

🌓145. Ditch the default feat. Dr Maike Neuhaus (Weekend Rewind)24 May 202500:34:23

On today's Weekend Rewind, I'm joined by good friend, psychologist and self-leadership expert, Dr. Maike Neuhaus.

Maike and I always go deep when we chat (usually over long lunches), so this episode feels like a peek behind the scenes of one of those meaty convos—except this time, you get to join us!

Maike specialises in helping people flourish—not just ā€œfixing what’s broken,ā€ but creating a life that’s rich in purpose, agency, and impact. We dig into the big stuff: why some people thrive while others stay stuck, how to tell if you’re burnt out or just blasĆ©, what flourishing really means, and why sometimes the bravest thing you can do is

say no.

We also talk about:

  • Her Self-Leadership 2.0 model (it’s šŸ”„: self-knowledge, self-goal-setting, and self-regulation)
  • Why positive psychology matters more than ever—and why it still isn’t being taught widely
  • Redefining meaning beyond your job (your ā€œwhyā€ doesn’t have to live at work)
  • Cognitive dissonance, procrastination, and the sneaky ways we talk ourselves out of what we want
  • Her plans to slow-travel the world with her family (yes, she walks the talk!)
  • The myth of waiting until retirement to live the life you want

This episode is a permission slip to rethink how you live, work, and define success. It's inspiring, grounding, and—if you're anything like me—you’ll probably want to grab a pen and paper after this one.

Maike also shares:

  • The book that shaped her worldview
  • A quote that calls out the insanity of how we approach mental health
  • Why the best productivity app might be... no app at all

Let me know what hits home for you—just hit reply or tag me @leannehughes on LinkedIn or IG.

🌓37. No Pong, no worries: A customer love story feat. co-founder Chris Caley05 Feb 202500:12:33

Ā love this product SO MUCH that I had to find out more behind the brand and business… cue this conversation!

In this episode, I chat with Chris Caley, co-founder of No Pong, about their natural deodorant success story.Ā

Chris shares how the company started from a surf trip in Java, Indonesia, where he first tried his wife Melanie's homemade deodorant.Ā

What began as a back-of-napkin business idea has now grown into a successful 10-year-old company with 21 employees.

Here's what we chat about:

  • The origin story of No Pong, starting with Melanie (a midwife and women's health advocate) making natural products at home
  • How the business idea was conceived during a surf trip in Indonesia
  • The company's strong focus on customer love as their primary value
  • Their approach to implementing and living company values
  • Inspiring customer stories, including early detection of health issues
  • No Pong's distribution through online channels, supermarkets, and over 1,000 independent health food stores

Links Mentioned:

Honestly, try it out, you will LOVE it.

Quote: "We consider our values higher than the law. If anyone did something and they were able to go, 'Hey, Chris, I did that because of customer love,' we would all go 'awesome.'" - Chris Caley

🌓 36. Escaping the Hesitation Station04 Feb 202500:07:52

Today, I want to talk about a concept I shared last year called the "Hesitation Station" - a place we all know too well. It's that metaphorical waiting room where ideas get stuck and potential goes unrealised

Imagine a dark, dreary station with trains coming and going, but you have no idea which direction they're heading. There are no vending machines, everything's running behind schedule. This station can exist for a few minutes, months, or even years. And the longer you stay, the harder it becomes to move.

Why we get stuck1. Fear of Failure

I've realised that one of the biggest reasons we get stuck is the fear of failure. It's safer to hold back, to not give something a try. We feed our ego by avoiding potential disappointment. But I've learned that it's more painful to not take the risk than to face potential judgment.

2. Over-Planning

We want to plan everything, to make sure outcomes are certain before we even start. But life doesn't work that way. The best insights come when you actually put your ideas out into the world, when you test them beyond your own thoughts.

3. Searching for the Perfect "Why"

I love strategy, but sometimes we overthink it. You don't need to have every single detail figured out. Nothing is permanent. In this digital age, you can put an offer out there, try it out, and learn from the validation you receive.

My personal journey

Take my daily podcast, for example. Two years ago, I met Eddie Quan who inspired this daily content approach. I initially rejected the idea, but here I am now. There's something cathartic about sharing your message daily.

How to Get Off the Hesitation StationSimple Steps
  • Socialise your ideas outside of your head
  • Start small and imperfect
  • Just give it a go

I recently spoke with my friend Sophia about her idea to start a live stream about football. My advice? Just do it. Even if it's an unlisted YouTube video, the experience of going live changes everything.

Some periods of hesitation are okay. As I discussed with Dr. Maike Neuhaus, sometimes it's good to be in a period of stability, even if it's uncertain. Not every idea needs to be pursued immediately.

What's the simplest way you can start sharing your idea? It's okay if you don't pursue it fully. The important thing is to make your work public, to take that first step.

Remember the quote from Alan Weiss: "We need to stop walking around the block to get next door." How can you jump that fence and leave the Hesitation Station?

I'll be sharing more insights about this throughout the year. If you have specific questions, feel free to reach out.

Thanks for listening, and I'll speak to you tomorrow.

🌓 35 Agitating change: Innovation in corporate learning feat. Liz Heathwood03 Feb 202500:13:37

Had a fantastic chat in the Brisbane Botanical Gardens with Liz Heathwood, a global Principal Advisor for learning experience at Rio Tinto who's passionate about disrupting traditional leadership development.

With native birds as our backdrop, we dove into the future of learning and development.

In this episode, we explore:

  • Why traditional leadership development programs often stay stuck in the past
  • How Rio Tinto approaches learning across diverse global locations (including voice recordings in Africa!)
  • The power of "activation" and creative ways to capture attention in the busy corporate world
  • Why PowerPoint slides need to die (and what to use instead)
  • The importance of building relationships across global teams
  • Tips for building your professional brand on LinkedIn while working in a corporate role

Key insights:

  • Focus on co-creation rather than the traditional "big reveal" approach
  • Tap into existing channels rather than creating new ones
  • Consider different learning modes for different audiences (especially those without computer access)
  • Keep "agitating in little ways" to drive change in organisations

Mentioned in this episode:

  • Siobhan McHale's "Insider's Guide to Culture Change"
  • Chad Littlefield's perspective on room experience
  • Jenny Blake's concept of "friendtoring"
  • Nick Shackleton Jones' "resources not courses" approach

Recording location: Brisbane Botanical Gardens 🌿 (with some chatty native birds in the background!)

🌓 34. Nicheless02 Feb 202500:10:38

Just worked on my latest podcast episode about niching in business - a topic that came up during a great chat with Sophia and Jade in the Corporate Box Coaching sesh on Friday.

In this episode, I break down:

  • Why the "you must have a niche" advice isn't one-size-fits-all
  • How I used hyper-niching with my "2 Hour Workshop Blueprint" book while maintaining broader business focus
  • The concept of being your own niche (like my personal brand at leannehughes.com)
  • My 90/10 split between B2B work (leadership teams, conferences, learning design) and B2C offerings
  • Why passion often follows competency rather than the other way around

Key takeaways: Think of yourself as the umbrella brand with content pillars underneath.

When monetising, you can hyper-niche to solve specific problems while maintaining creative freedom in your overall brand.

Mentioned in this episode:

Recording location: On a foresty track with kangaroos and wildlife in the background! 🦘

Bringing you this weekend rewind, based on a conversation I had with Alex and Scott during Corporate Box Coaching on Friday.

In this episode, I'm joyfully bringing you a conversation with the author of the book ā€œBelonging: The Ancient Code of Togethernessā€, Owen Eastwood.

Btw, you can watch the YouTube conversation here.

Have you been in work situations where you might have started in a company and you just didn’t feel like you belonged, which then led to a lot of stress and tension? Join us as we learn how to create a sense of belonging with the Belonging author, Owen Eastwood.

Owen draws on his own Maori ancestry and weaves together insights from our evolutionary story and our collective wisdom as he helps people create a sense of belonging, especially in workplaces. Owen shines a light on where these powerful ideas are applied around the world in high performing settings, encompassing sports, business, the arts, and military.

In this conversation, you’ll hear Owen and I discuss:

  • His book, ā€œBelonging: The Ancient Code of Togethernessā€
  • What the concept of Whakapapa is all about

🌓 30. Big ideas + bubbles, feat. Dr Maike Neuhaus and Petra Zink29 Jan 202500:10:54

Look, as a solo business owner, I spend heaps of time in my own head—and I enjoy it! But here’s the thing: nothing speeds up clarity and fresh thinking like being around people who just get it.

This episode is a little different. I recorded it straight after a strategy session with my friends Petra Zink and Dr Maike Neuhaus.

We meet up every 40–50 days in what’s become a bit of a ritual. It’s two hours of weird Post-it notes, provocative questions, and brainstorming, followed by two hours of good food and bubbles.

In today’s unedited (well, mostly unedited) conversation, we talk about:

  • The power of having a group of people who challenge your thinking and celebrate your wins.
  • Why psychological safety is a game-changer for breakthrough moments.
  • How to embrace controversial, edgy ideas in your content (spoiler: playing it safe gets you nowhere).
  • Why sometimes you just need to ride the wave of uncertainty and let things unfold.
  • We also dive into what it means to curate your own friendship groups, why LinkedIn feels a bit vanilla, and how sharing just 10% of the bold, authentic ideas we explore in private could completely change the game.

Final takeaway: Be surrounded by people who challenge you, celebrate you, and help you reach your peak. Cheers to that—and enjoy the episode!

šŸŽ™ļø Let me know your thoughts! What inspires you, and who challenges you to think bigger?

🌓144. Innovate to stay alive feat. Stephen Shapiro (Weekend Rewind)23 May 202500:32:03

Hey! Thanks for tuning in to this weekend’s rewind. This conversation was recorded a few years ago, but wow—has it aged well. Today’s guest is the brilliant Stephen Shapiro, an innovation expert who's spent decades helping organisations grow by asking better questions and solving the right problems.

Stephen shares how he went from optimising processes (aka, shrinking companies) at Accenture to building one of their fastest-growing innovation practices—scaling from 0 to 20,000 people in nine months. šŸ”„

We dive into:

  • Why innovation isn’t about ideas—and what it’s really about instead
  • How companies misuse the word ā€œinnovationā€ (and what to do instead)
  • The difference between differentiation and mission statements (and why it matters)
  • Why mob-sourcing (hello, Boaty McBoatface) is not innovation
  • The underrated power of problem formulation over problem-solving
  • How your brain reacts to the word ā€œcreativityā€ (spoiler: it’s not all good)
  • And what Stephen’s doing now to stay relevant and reimagine his next chapter

There’s so much in here—from laughter to learning to one of the best explanations I’ve heard about why asking better questions is the key to progress. Oh, and yes, he’s also playing the saxophone these days.

🌓 27. Do something off-brand26 Jan 202500:06:49

In today’s episode of Leanne on Demand, we’re shaking things up—starting with my coffee order. While being predictable and ā€œon brandā€ has its perks (hello, efficiency!), it can also make life feel a bit... well, boring. That’s why I’m challenging myself—and you—to step outside the usual routine and try something a little off brand.

We explore how making small, low-risk changes—whether it’s switching up your coffee, saying no without justification, or wearing a bold accessory—can help you discover new sides of yourself, spark fresh ideas, and keep life interesting.

Tune in to hear:

  • Why going 10% off brand is the sweet spot for growth
  • My story of choosing a long-tail boat in Thailand (yes, it was slightly terrifying!)
  • Practical, everyday ways to step outside your comfort zone

If you’ve been stuck in autopilot, this episode is your nudge to mix it up. Try something different, surprise yourself, and maybe even surprise the people around you. Let’s keep life interesting—one small shift at a time.

In today's Weekend Rewind, I talk to Julian Treasure. Julian is a sought-after and top-rated international sound and communication expert. He is a gripping speaker with 5 TED talks online which have been viewed around 40 million times. Julian’s speech ā€˜How to speak so people want to listen’ is my favourite TED speech. It’s also in the top-10 of most watched TED speeches of all time, with over 65 million views,

However, when I was doing more research on Julian’s work, I also realised the emphasis that he puts on listening. Not hearing, but listening. We spend a good chunk of this conversation discussing how to do that effectively.

  • The significance of Conscious Listening
  • How stance and posture affects your voice when delivering a speech
  • Tips and tricks on breathing and voice exercises

  • Strategies on how to control the pace of your voice
