WALL52: The police officer who facilitates with flair feat. Suzanne Rose26 Dec 202200:39:41

My guest is Suzanne Rose and she is a Sergeant of the Queensland Police Service, having joined in 1998. She was poached by a spotter in recent years, and landed the perfect role for her personality, running professional development workshops for police training facilitators. This includes her favourite signature three-day facilitation skills workshop - 'Facilitate with Flair'.

Watch our conversation on YouTube.

Her role has led her to study the craft of facilitation beyond her organisation, and to learn what is best practice based on research from around the world, including studies from the fields of neuroscience and educational psychology.

We talk more about her Facilitate with Flair experience and how she navigates the mindset of "doing things differently" when working in an organisation which is hierarchical, and where things are done a certain way.

Suzanne is committed to transforming aspects of police organisational culture around training. She hopes to reduce the mortality rate with the cause of death being PowerPoint, and actively inspires facilitators to be brave enough to try more engaging and fun ways to deliver their sessions - even the heavy, dry and serious policing topics.

Suzanne is a full-time working mum who lives in Brisbane on acreage in koala habitat, with her husband and their two young daughters, a Labrador, pet chicken, and an abundance of wallabies, possums, rainbow lorikeets and kookaburras around their property. She spends any spare time making fun memories with her girls, and can't wait to take them on adventures through far-away lands abroad where nothing is taken for granted.

WALL41: Getting the best out of conferences, without burning yourself out (Two by Tuesday)10 Oct 202200:08:38

FOMO can hit you when you're at a conference, summit, or event. So, how do you manage getting all there is out of attending, without burning yourself out?

Watch the YouTube Explainer video.

I'm creating and sharing this following 4-days at an Alan Weiss event in Brisbane. I made some decisions during the week and a few of my friends were like, "Oh, why did you decide to do that? How are you playing this conference?"

I think you really need a balance of all four quadrants in today's matrix  to have a really invigorating conference experience without burning yourself out.

The two elements are:
- Managing your time (free time/scheduled)
- Managing your energy (in/out)

What are your tips for getting the best out of events and conferences?

WALL40: Solving the Part-time Puzzle with Belinda Morgan03 Oct 202200:35:45

How do we open that conversation around the benefits of working part-time in a world where hustle culture remains king in most lands?

Watch our conversation on YouTube!

The biggest assumption people have when it comes to part-time work in senior roles is that they cannot do it, and even if they can, they just shouldn’t. Overwork is being glorified and people think everyone should literally work hard, as if the whole place would fall apart if someone starts working part-time.

But today’s guest has seen it firsthand, how highly damaging it is to people’s well-being, productivity, and results when only the business’ profit is the one being prioritized. So in this episode, we hope you join us as we dive into the benefits of a work that’s both flexible and fulfilling, giving you autonomy and freedom while taking action on your purpose in life.

Belinda Morgan is the author of the book, “Solving the Part-time Puzzle: How to Decrease Your Hours, Increase Your Impact, and Thrive in Your Part-time Role”. She is a leadership and flexible work coach for professionals who know there is more to work and life but aren’t sure how to get the balance right.

It has always been important to Belinda to do interesting and meaningful work, and to do it with a degree of freedom. Her current goal is to help other leaders find their perfect combination of freedom and fulfillment, as she’s already seen and experienced it first hand how big of a positive difference it is when you find work that is both flexible and fulfilling.

In this conversation, you’ll hear Belinda discuss:

  • How to ask or pitch the idea of working part-time
  • The benefit for business if you are working part-time, especially the societal benefit of having more freedom in life
  • Why Belinda and I love autonomy and freedom as part of our day
  • How she had her concept of a book and got it out to market very quickly

WALL38: Host Your Own 2-Hour Cocktail Party with Nick Gray21 Sep 202200:41:40

Who doesn’t love a good cocktail party?

Watch our conversation on Youtube!

I love going to events and meeting new people but gosh, sometimes I feel like I’m not even keeping up the great relationships with the amazing people I already know! Cue this book: The 2-Hour Cocktail Party by Nick Gray.

After reading the first chapter, I set a date for my cocktail party and luckily, the day after, I debrief it in this conversation with the author of the book Nick Gray.

Nick Gray moved to New York City with few friends and less-than-stellar social skills. But Nick craved new relationships and exciting opportunities. He started hosting non-traditional parties—a move that opened doors he could never have imagined.

Today, after hosting hundreds of 2-hour parties, he counts business owners, artists, and inspiring teachers among a circle of friends that helped him launch a multi-million dollar company called Museum Hack. Featured in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, Nick has been called a host of "culturally significant parties" by New York Magazine.

See his best-rated photos online at www.NickGray.net or @NickGrayNews on Instagram and Twitter, email him directly to hello@nickgray.net, or see his party tips on How to Host a Party: www.party.pro

In this conversation, you'll hear Nick discuss:

  • How Nick started his career and founded the Museum Hack
  • His book, "The 2-Hour Cocktail Party: How to build big relationships with small gatherings."
  • The value of hosting 2-hour cocktail parties

Listen to this, grab his book and start hosting your own cocktail parties!

WALL36: Building a Distinct, Durable and Differentiated Business with Stephen Shapiro07 Sep 202200:35:19

What is the purpose of your organization? Why does it exist?

Watch our conversation on YouTube!

I'm not sure about you but sometimes I will say that I want and need change, but more often than not, what ends up happening is we run away from it, afraid of the risks it might bring to our life and/or business.  Hey, that's normal! We're wired towards survival.

But as our guest today says, past success isn’t really a great predictor of future success but a great predictor of future failure. That's why we need to value innovation.

Stephen Shapiro cultivates innovation by showing leaders and their teams how to approach, tackle, and solve their business challenges. The first innovation opportunity Stephen spotted was the opportunity to innovate within his own life.

He left Accenture after publishing his first book, “24/7 Innovation”, to become a full-time innovation speaker and advisor to clients around the world. Stephen continues to work with transforming businesses to improve innovation practices through customized keynotes, speeches, advisory engagements, and other services. He has a degree from Cornell University in Industrial Engineering and is based out of Orlando, Florida.

Back in 2020, the mid-pandemic, Stephen really helped me figure out what to do next with my business. I heard him chat with Jenny Blake on the Pivot Podcast and he talked about innovation as staying relevant. I think with all the constant changes in our world, it’s so important to consider how you can and your business remain relevant, and that is through the process of innovation. Tune in as Stephen dives into the details today.

In this conversation, you’ll hear Stephen discuss:

  • What is it that makes your business distinct, what is it that you offer, and how is that durable so that it will stand the test of time and others can’t copy it
  • His sixth book, “Invisible Solutions
  • What we actually really think about creativity in terms of our subconscious
  • How far do you consult when it comes to innovation and getting solutions
  • Focusing on great questions instead of rushing to solutions

WALL35: How responsive is your business? Two by Tuesday with Leanne Hughes29 Aug 202200:09:13

We all know that change is accelerating, everyday. Yet, most companies stick to the traditional ways of creating their business strategy that takes weeks, if not months to formulate, then by the time it's released, it's already obsolete!

In this week's Two by Tuesday, I share the Sentient Strategy® approach. I'm certified to deliver Sentient Strategy® by Alan Weiss, and I've found it a super refreshing, rapid response type way to help companies formulate their strategy.

In this episode, I share the two key components and provide examples to help you identify where you, or your business may sit.

WALL34: Describing and Defining Company Culture with Shane Hatton22 Aug 202200:34:28

What does it mean to truly have the character of a leader? Is culture really something we can influence in an organization?

Watch our conversation on YouTube!

We all have that experience wherein we’ve been on the receiving end of connecting with someone who didn’t really value the conversation that we’re having. That’s the most devaluing feeling, just as our guest today says.

So join us in this episode as he shares what he’s learned upon writing a book about culture, on why being present is important for a remarkable leader, and how he lives his life as a charismatic introvert.

Shane Hatton is an author, trainer, coach, and speaker who is passionate about developing remarkable leaders and cultures. He works with organizations to close the leadership gap between mid and senior level leaders.

Aside from being the author of the books “Let’s Talk Culture – The Conversations You Need to Create the Team You Want” and “Lead The Room – Communicate a Message That Counts in Moments That Matter”, Shane is also a Gallup Certified Strengths Coach, a member of the Forbes Global Coaches Council, and is the Founder of the People Leaders Network.

I met Shane on the Clubhouse app, where we had various conversations around various topics, but it was when I attended his book launch earlier this year in Sydney that we finally got to meet in real life.

In this conversation, you’ll hear Shane discuss:

  • His book, “Let’s Talk Culture – The Conversations You Need to Create the Team You Want
  • The insights of culture
  • Practical things leaders can do to build and reinforce their culture
  • His personal insights on how he handles his energy
  • How he manages the contrast of being the person in front of the room and while also thriving behind the scenes
  • Coach Chris Bennett and the Nike running app
  • Rapid Round

WALL33: Reducing the risk of getting ghosted (Two by Tuesday)15 Aug 202200:09:55

Okay, before we even kick off: Most of the time, ghosting isn’t about you. Stop taking it personally. I know I have absent-mindedly ghosted other people and it's 100% something I'm working on right now, which is why I've produced today's episode.

You also can't control what others do, so in this Two by Tuesday, I break down what you can do to influence and reduce the risk of ghosting happening to you.

On the Y axis, we're looking at value (expect v offer)
On the X axis, we're looking at your relationship status (known v unknown)

WALL32: Leanne Hughes on Waffles & Whisky12 Aug 202200:37:33

Earlier this week, I jumped in the car and visited a studio in Brisbane to record a YouTube livestream, for my friend Gerald Pauschmann's YouTube Channel, Waffles & Whiskey.

Gerald has been live-streaming for 158 days! I've taken excerpts of the conversation and popped them on the podcast, as we cover topics on leaving your job, starting a business, validation,  dreaming up your vision, and so much more.

It's just cool being part of a live-stream experience and seeing how Gerald embraces his community.

WALL50: Life is to be Enjoyed, Not Endured: A Leadership Conversation with Clifford Morgan12 Dec 202200:41:46

Good leaders are made; they are not born. What does it take to be one?

Watch our conversation on YouTube!

Leadership is a very critical role in any organization, and oftentimes the success or failure of one depends largely on the kind of leadership that it has. This is why it is essential that leaders in the modern marketplace be equipped with good and effective coaching skills to develop people and lead more effectively.

The popular rhetoric related to coaching tries to teach leaders to be executive coaches; in contrast to that, our guest today believes that coaching is an essential skill that you can bring in handy at any given time.

Clifford Morgan promotes enhanced leadership by teaching leaders essential coaching skills that will help them develop their people every single day and therefore become more effective as leaders.

He is an organizational psychologist and leadership expert who served for more than fifteen years in the Royal Australian Air Force. As a coach, Clifford has worked with CEOs, Military Officers, Government Executives, and business and community leaders across a wide variety of industries. Earlier his month, he published his newest book “The Coaching Leader”.

I met Clifford in Brisbane, but I really didn’t have an idea about his backstory until I have read it in his book. But today, he’ll share that story with us as well as some few snippets of what his new book, “The Coaching Leader”, contains.

A lot of community and business leaders out there really has huge potentials. If they could have the right training to acquire the proper coaching skill set that they need, they could unlock their full potential and become even more effective in their organizations. Tune in as Clifford dives into the details today.

In this conversation, you’ll hear Clifford discuss:

  • His experience in Iraq and how it shaped his perspective on work and life
  • His new book, “The Coaching Leader
  • The importance of having and creating fun at work
  • Having clarity in your message

WALL31: Get Lucked! How to Cultivate Serendipity in Your Work with Dr. Christian Busch08 Aug 202200:32:15

Join us today as we learn how to cultivate serendipity so we can live life while creating impact and value day by day.

Watch our conversation on YouTube!

Whether we admit it or not, most of us fear the unexpected. It scares us, for we have no idea on what’s about to come. It makes us feel disorganized as if we’re straying away from our plan. But things that come out of nowhere can also be an inflection point to something great, to something interesting. See every situation as a growth opportunity and you’ll experience serendipity as you live.

Today, we’re joined by Dr. Christian Busch, the author of the book “The Serendipity Mindset: The Art and Science of Creating Good Luck”. He’s the Director of Global Economy Program at New York University’s Center for Global Affairs where he teaches on purpose-driven leadership, impact, entrepreneurship, innovation, and emerging markets.

He is a visiting fellow at the London School of Economics, and the Co-Founder of Leaders on Purpose, an organization convening high-impact leaders, as well as the Sandbox Network, a global community of young innovators active in over 20 countries. Previously, Dr. Christian served on the faculty of the LSE Department of Management and as the Inaugural Deputy Director of the LSE Innovation Center.

He’s been featured on many TEDx Talks. I recently watched one of the TEDx Talks he was in, and it was so fantastic; I’ve decided to invite him here. Join me as we learn from what Christian has to share today.

In this conversation, you’ll hear Dr. Christian discuss:

  • What it actually means to cultivate a serendipity mindset
  • The difference between blind luck and smart luck
  • The fear of missing out
  • The contrast between planning and being open to opportunities
  • The dynamics between being an introvert and an extrovert

WALL30: Are you a Thought Breeder or a Thought Bleeder?01 Aug 202200:12:03

There's so much content available, but what are we actually doing with it?

Today's episode is created for you, but it's also an important reminder for me. I'm addicted to listening, reading and learning new things, it's like an endless search for a silver bullet.

How though, do we absorbing information and all of this cool stuff that’s online take action on it?  and actually taking action on it.  How do we draw that line between I'm consuming all this information, but what am I actually doing with it?

We are bombarded every single day by webinars to join, new books to read, new podcast episodes to listen to, new conference to attend. It’s inspiring! It can also get dangerous when we confuse consuming with creating - that’s when consumption can stall your progress.

That's what I'm exploring today, using the power of a two-by-two matrix.

Right now, where are you on this matrix: A Thought Breeder, a Thought Bleeder, a Thought Leader, or a Thought Reader? Let me know!

WALL29: Your employee engagement surveys are leading to divorce. Here’s what to do instead with Leanne Hughes25 Jul 202200:12:53

Two weeks ago, I posted a mini rant on LinkedIn. A ton of people commented and also messaged me privately afterwards, with their experiences with employee engagement surveys.

I’ve expanded on the thoughts here in this article and also share some alternatives on what you can do, instead.

I'm curious, what's your experience been with these type of surveys? Let me know in the comments.

Here's what I heard publicly:

  • “These employee engagement surveys always seem such tick box exercises, it's hard to get passionate about them. I also dislike the fact that they have to be anonymous. They should offer anonymity as an option but sometimes it's also nice to receive direct feedback based on my responses (both positive and constructive) and definitely to see actions based on my responses. What's the point in me making honest comments otherwise?” Jack Wilkinson
  • “The feedback survey one is particularly galling and falls under "we should do these things to try and keep the staff happy, but we can't change anything, maybe we should have a pizza party, that makes staff happy right?”- Derek Van Tonder
  • “Seen it all” - Mike Oskam

I’ve expanded on the thoughts here in this podcast episode and also share some alternatives on what you can do, instead.

WALL28: Redefining what it means to "add value" in your relationships (Two by Tuesday)18 Jul 202200:10:23

So many experts and thought leaders tell me that I must "add value" in my relationships. What does this actually mean?

Watch the YouTube walkthrough here.

I think there's an incorrect assumption that "adding value" means sharing content, wisdom and advice.

In this 10min episode, I share the other factor we need to consider to really add value in our interactions.

Enjoy the listen! I'd love to hear how you add value, and what this phrase means to you?

WALL 27: Getting Unstuck and Driving Sustainable Ambition in your Work and Life with Kathy Oneto13 Jul 202200:33:31

On last week’s episode of Two by Tuesday, we talked about the 2x2 matrix of competence and joy with regards to our work. The top left of that box – the trap quadrant – says a lot about us, being highly competent in something, but that something doesn’t give us the joy that we need in life.

So today, I invited someone who can help us out if we’re stuck in doing a lot of work in that trap area. Join us today as we learn to live with more fulfillment, joy, and ease while still being ambitious.

Watch our conversation on YouTube!

What are your ambitions in life?

More often than not, when we reach our 40s, we start to go through this transition wherein our ambitions change. Some find it hard to navigate this, given that the culture of our workplace doesn’t change as we are, but to cut the dissatisfaction, we need to embrace the change that’s happening within.

But the question is how? How do we allow ourselves to fully step into life and work in the way that we want while also sustaining ourselves in the long run?

Discover the answer to that question as we dive into this episode with Kathy.

Kathy Oneto is an executive and leadership coach, a career strategist, and a strategy and marketing professional. She hosts the podcast called Sustainable Ambition. Also, she is the founder and chief strategist at The Agency Oneto.

Kathy’s mission is to help leaders and professionals get in touch with their personal aspirations and ambitions to find their own success and find more ease, so that they can make an impact and realize their full potential. Her strength is working with ambitious individuals who want both fulfilling professional and personal lives and help them be great leaders

In this conversation, you’ll hear Kathy and I discuss:

  • How we achieve sustainable ambition
  • How we focus on the things that matter most to us and do it in a way where we feel like the work that we’re doing is actually something that matters
  • Her insights on the adult development and growth journey as we get older
  • How to navigate our shifting priorities in life as well as work
  • How she takes action on an idea
  • What to pay attention to if you’re trying to navigate a transition
  • How to plan for periods in our lives that last for around 12-18 months

WALL26: If your in-house mentoring program is failing, maybe you need to try this instead.11 Jul 202200:10:25

You’ve launched a mentoring program in your business. Congrats! Through the first few months of check-ins, you discover that your pairings are meeting together.

Then, after three months, you notice the enthusiasm has waned a little. Meetings become less frequent. Business priorities take over.

If you’re in this situation, don’t be alarmed. It’s what I prescribe as Mentor Fade. It’s completely normal.

So, what can you do instead? In this sharp, 10 min episode, I share a cool approach to creating more friendtor relationships in your business (thanks to Jenny Blake for sharing that awesome word on her Pivot podcast).

Today's question is what type of work tasks should you stop/start as part of your work day?

Watch this walk-through on YouTube.

Let's talk about the two important elements.

I think they are:

  • Competence (low vs high) and
  • Joy (low vs high)

Which quadrant demands most of your time during a work week?

WALL23: How to recall quotes, stories and examples in the moment (not in the shower later that evening): Two by Tuesday20 Jun 202200:13:27

Something I've deliberately tried to improve over the last couple of years is improving my ability to connect quotes, stories and examples in the moment.

It started when I was hosting my first podcast, and wanted to connect my guest's responses with something they had said earlier, or with something relating to their career, or to push the conversation in a new direction.

It's a handy skill when you facilitate workshops as well - having that ability to connect participants' responses to the content, or with what someone else said earlier that day.

In this week's Two by Tuesday, I share four ways I've improved at this skill but believe me, I can do better!

How do you recall information in the moment?

WALL 22: "No Risk, No Reward" with Tongan Flag Bearer, Pita Taufatofua15 Jun 202201:10:06

All of us here have our own dreams that we want to pursue, but due to the fear that’s holding us back, most of the time, we don’t really put an effort into moving.

That’s why in today’s episode, I’ve invited someone who’s gone from being a nobody to becoming bigger and better. Join me as I interview the ‘shirtless’ flag bearer.

Watch our conversation on YouTube!

How do you live and succeed in a life that is centered on doing things that you truly love?

Most people start their goals so high that they immediately fall into darkness when things don’t turn out fine. There are people who are too afraid to take action because of the limiting belief they have inside. Some people tend to give up when things get ‘too’ hard. But remember, each day is a reset, and every day, you’re given the blessing to try again.

Your conviction is your armor. Wear it and fight your demons.

Pita Taufatofua is a Tongan athlete in taekwondo and cross-country skiing. He has represented these sports three times across summer and winter Olympics.

He is the founder of TongaStrong, and has a passion in helping provide opportunities for the youth of the Pacific. He is also a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for the Pacific, and is a Team Samsung Galaxy athlete who lives in Brisbane Australia.

Pita and I met back in high school. I love how he is a person who is just so funny and intelligent, but is also so giving and down-to-earth at the same time. It’s just amazing to see the level of growth and influence that he has had just since we’re leaving high school.

In this conversation, you’ll hear Pita discuss:

  • What happened on that night of his first Rio Olympics that changed his life in an exponential way
  • His approach to working out and creating discipline
  • His ability to be fearless
  • The process he goes by as he puts effort to achieve his goals
  • A skill everyone needs to master
  • The idea of failing happy in relation to his kayaking experience

WALL49: The paid subscriptions I'm stopping, starting and continuing in 2023 (Two by Tuesday)05 Dec 202200:13:28

When you think about paid subscriptions, it's really a question around  what does your future hold?

Today on the show it's not really a question I'm exploring, but I'm sharing something behind the scenes of what paid subscriptions I'm m stopping, continuing or starting,  as a result of a recent subscription audit I ran on myself.

With the SaaS (Software as a Service) f business model, we get sucked into paying a monthly fee. And then I don't know about you, but sometimes then I look at my bank account or read my email and the subscription is ticked over again and I think, am I actually using this?

I think December is a great time of the year to re-evaluate what you're paying for and make a decision on whether you keep it, or it goes.

So I think as a good exercise, it's definitely worth going through that.

Enjoy the listen!

WALL20: Live Life Like You’re Flying with Ryan Soh30 May 202200:33:54

As we focus on travel tips for this month’s episodes, I’ve decided to invite someone whose life revolves around traveling the world and exploring its wonders. Today’s guest will share his story on how he’s able to work and live large as he breathes the beauty of the places he goes to.

 Watch our conversation on YouTube!

Living your day-to-day in a country where there’s nothing else to do but to work every minute, I bet that your heart will shout to be freed, for that isn’t the life you want to live. There’ll always be this calling for traveling, for going to places and falling in love with it as a whole, ‘till you realize that it’s time for you to move forward and go to where your heart leads.

But the question is how do we really follow that voice in our head and leave the life we’ve lived for years?

The corporate world and all its madness was a life he wanted to escape from, and so, he did. Join us in this episode and learn from his story.

Even when he felt desperate to escape the rat race as he migrated to Australia in 2013, Ryan Soh – originally from Singapore – considers this as the best decision he’s ever made. It’s how his journey to travel the world began. It’s how he was able to fly, eat, and stay as he forgets the worries of life.

As a firm believer in “journey, not the destination”, Ryan explores the world to create videos, talking about detailed planes, trains, food, and hotel reviews. Through his YouTube channel, Ryan So Fly, Ryan helps you see the world through his eyes.

I discovered what Ryan does through the Frequent Flyers Australia FB Group. I usually just read stuff and hit like when I visit every day, but when I saw Ryan’s post, I immediately subscribed to his YouTube channel as I really loved watching his travel vlogs. I love how he has embraced a sense of truth and freshness in his footage while providing great detail about the places that he visits. And to top all that, Ryan has a really cool sense of humor but is actually so down-to-earth!

In this conversation, you'll hear Ryan discuss:

  • Ryan’s work and live large story: On deciding to leave Singapore
  • What it’s like to be a content creator and travel vlogger
  • Ryan Soh’s favorite airline
  • National culture and how that impacts your experience as a guest

WALL19: Should you set an Out of Office when you go travelling? (Two by Tuesday)23 May 202200:09:24

What do you think? Should you set an out of office when you go travelling?

On Instagram Stories last week, I ran a poll asking if you set an Out of Office (OOO) when you go travelling.

80% of you said "Yes Leanne. Set one!"

However, on my latest trip, I didn't set the Out of Office.

Watch this week's Two by Tuesday and you'll hear me explain why.

You probably have your own preference. I find it helps to determine the intentionality behind your trip, and I share those considerations in this week's minisode.

WALL18: 35 Travel Hacks to Help You Hit the Tarmac Running16 May 202200:36:40

After being stuck in our homes due to the sudden hit of the pandemic, people are now traveling as much as they could, wanting to celebrate that they’re now able to take in outdoor air. And yes, even I have been traveling a lot these days. It’s now time for my #revengetravel!

Going to places brings me a lot of joy. Flying to explore the world is one of the things I breathe for. But recently, I noticed lots of hectic lineups at the airport, with people having a hard time as they go on board. So today, I’m here with you to share some travel hacks that will make your travel experience easier and better than before. Bon voyage, folks!

35 Travel Tips:

1. Steph Taylor from StephTaylor.co’s travel tip is to download the TripIt app to see a compilation of your itinerary and travel details.

2. When booking economy flights, Steph Taylor advises you to book aisle seats that have an empty seat beside them.

3. Leanne Hughes tells you to continue checking the Qantas app until boarding.

4. Andy Storch’s travel tip is for you to be intentional with the time you spend in the plane. Do something that will make you better.

5. Leanne Hughes reminds you to download your favourite podcast, audiobook, and/or Spotify playlist before flying.

6. Liz Barber says do not plan to do work on the flight and just read, watch, or write to track ideas instead.

7. Derek Van Tonder’s travel tip is to print out all your travel documents, especially your COVID 19 vaccination certificates, and keep a colored copy of your passport and driving license.

8. Leanne Hughes, in relation to Derek’s tip, shares her practice of putting all of your printed documents in a display folder and have things arranged in order of events.

9. Tim Ferguson is from Audience and his tip is to travel by train.

10. Cathryn Lloyd from Maverick Minds says to fly less and fly better. Travel business class, get access to a lounge, turn off the internet, rest, chill, write, and drink lots of water, not alcohol.

WALL17: What tool should you use to ramp up the engagement in your virtual meeting (Two by Tuesday)09 May 202200:13:21

In today's Two by Tuesday I answer a question I get a lot: What virtual tool could I use to ramp up the engagement in my virtual event?

Watch this episode's walk-through video on YouTube.

Firstly - purpose we know is the most critical element. That aside, what else is important to consider?

In this episode I think two key considerations are your group size and accessibility requirements.

What I find is often: The simpler, the better/ Don't go too crazy. Don't think you need to ham up your workshops with all these tech tools, just because you want to impress people, it really has to connect to that purpose.

Let me know in the comments: What your favourite tech tool is for your virtual events?

WALL16: Transforming New Customers into Loyal Champions with Donna Weber04 May 202200:39:32

As ironic as it is, there are still companies nowadays that are so focused on getting new clients while overlooking why onboarding is a must in business. In today’s episode, my guest discusses the power onboarding holds in converting your customers to life-long clients as she gives a peak on the six-step process she goes by as she dives into practice.

Watch our conversation on YouTube!

Today, I invited a good friend to educate us about the importance of having people understand what they’ve purchased and in what sense it would help them, as well as your business.

I met Donna in February when I flew all the way to Las Vegas to attend a workshop run by Alan Weiss. Back then, Donna came over to introduce herself, but I recognized her first by her voice and not her face. I’ve been listening to her book Onboarding Matters on Audible! Getting to know Donna and being able to spend days with her in Las Vegas was undoubtedly a fantastic experience.

In this conversation, you'll hear Donna discuss:

  • Tips on where to focus your time and energy as a consultant
  • How to deliver value to your clients upfront
  • What onboarding looks like for your business
  • Energy hacks when you need to work with only three hours of sleep

WALL15: Starting the Day with a Question and Ending with a Solution with Rajendra Zore27 Apr 202200:45:18
I’ve heard many inspiring stories of people succeeding in life after hitting the rock bottom, not minding how hard it’s going to be, knowing that there is no other way but up. My guest today shares a motivational story of how giving back, working with what he has available, and thinking about how he can do better every day, helped him succeed, get back on his feet, and Work and Live Large.

Watch our conversation on YouTube!

When you are at the bottom, feeling helpless - you are left with two choices: to give up or get going. The question is: What can you do when you are completely starting from scratch? My guest today shares an extraordinary journey on how he managed to build a business after borrowing a laptop for one hour a day.

Rajendra considers himself an accidental entrepreneur who went on creating tech ventures and now proudly walks as a Serial Entrepreneur. He has been building businesses from scratch since 2012 and to date has founded & closely affiliated with three separate successful tech startups – all of which serve a global market.

For the better part of his entrepreneurial journey, Raj has been doing most of the things alone. That is where this whole idea of exploring the new buzzword ‘Solopreneurship’ came into mind. To explore the solopreneurship, he started Host My Blog in 2015 & served hundreds of bloggers with various technical services. He has since been enjoying his role as a WordPress Consultant.

In 2019, there was a WordPress event in Brisbane with several streams of speakers, I had major FOMO when my brother Randall went to a stream that I wasn't in. He told me I should've gone to the room where he was in after the breakout address concluded. I dashed to see if I could meet the speaker, who happened to be Rajendra. We spoke for a few minutes, and I've been following him on Twitter since that moment.

In this conversation, you'll hear Rajendra discuss:

  • The difference between an intellectual and product business
  • Being in the rock-bottom and successfully overcoming it
  • What “giving back” actually means
  • Why being a generalist can be good
  • The importance of being intentional and patience
  • The essence of thinking “how can I be a better person?”

WALL14: How can you inspire change in your business? Two by Tuesday with Leanne Hughes25 Apr 202200:09:53

How can you get buy-in for your change initiatives and ideas? Well, this might be controversial but I suggest you don't. Don't try to get buy-ins, instead, attract pre-orders instead. How do you do that? I share my ideas in this week's Two by Tuesday.

The two elements I unpack are Vision and the Journey.

WALL 13: Not finding work fulfilling? You can change that with Dr. Maike Neuhaus18 Apr 202200:39:25

I’ve heard of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and didn’t realise there was a third type of motivation until today’s conversation!

Watch our conversation on YouTube!

In order to be completely mentally healthy, we need a lot more. And basically what we need is something called flourishing. Let’s learn more about it and understand what it means to flourish and thrive so in return, we can live valuable, meaningful lives. We all have the potential to flourish, listen in to hear how.

Dr. Maike Neuhaus a self-proclaimed self-leadership and flourishing fanatic. From a young age, she has been fascinated with the fact that some people seem to thrive in life, while others get in their own way.

I met Dr. Maike when we both attended a Team Management Systems (TMS) accreditation program. She walked into class with a leather jacket, a motorbike helmet, and was questioning study validity, and I was like, “Who is this cool person?” We kept in touch over email, Maike and her family moved to Europe but since she’s been back, we’ve been having conversations, like we had today, in person, in cool places, and it’s one of my favorite things to do.

In this conversation, you'll hear Dr. Maike discuss:

  • How do we take care of our emotional wellbeing
  • The role of self-actualization in the social wellbeing
  • The difference between surviving and thriving
  • The power of definitions, particularly related to burnout and languishing
  • The three key elements of her self-leadership 2.0 model
  • Integrated motivation (it’s not intrinsic or extrinsic)
  • Your purpose and how it doesn’t have to be linked to your job

How can you THRIVE in the first 90 days of your new job? (Two by Tuesday)11 Apr 202200:11:21

You’ve started a new role, how can you thrive in the first 90 days?

Watch me break it down in these week's Two by Tuesday.

I believe it comes down to these two elements:
- Frequency of conversations (High vs Low)

As you watch this video, reflect on where you’ve been when you’ve started in a new job? I’ve certainly worked across all four of these domains!

WALL48: Don’t walk, RUN (and why tradies make the best leaders) with Tim Guinea28 Nov 202200:59:06

How do we become the effective leader that this world truly needs? What traits do we have to embody in order to pave the way toward positive change?

Putting ourselves on the receiving end of our own actions helps us rethink the way we’re doing things. We got to be able to take a risk, and not be afraid of it. As our guest today says, if you believe you can do the job, knock your socks off and go for it!

Today’s guest is all-round legend Tim Guinea. He is a family man and the Founder and Managing Director of Autonomy & Asset Management Group. With more than 15 years’ experience across the mining and resources industry, he is an experienced professional with specialist knowledge across all areas of Asset Management.

Tim has worked for, and with, world class mining houses and service providers including Anglo American, Fortescue, Downer EDI and Thiess, starting his career as a Drill Fitter in exploration, to leading teams of professionals to deliver world class outcomes safely, efficiently and on-time across multiple states. He is known for his leadership style and operational expertise, which has seen him improve culture and ultimately the business' performance.

Outside of business, Tim loves to spend quality time with his family and has 3 children, soon to be 4 early next year. He loves all things outdoors, especially sport, and since retiring from Rugby League has found a passion in Triathlons.

I met Tim when I was still working at my old company, Thiess; however, I didn’t know about his upbringing on a farm, especially on how that dramatically impacted his work ethic and attitude. So tune in and grab your pen, folks, for in this episode, it’ll all make sense.

In this conversation, you’ll hear Tim discuss:

  • Skills shortage in Australia and what Tim and his company are thinking about in terms of doing differently when it comes to attracting people
  • How Tim’s farming upbringing helped nurture his resilience as an apprentice, a tradie, supervisor, and now a business owner
  • What it felt like becoming a 28-year-old first-time supervisor and leading a crew that were mostly older than him (some double his age)
  • Why tradies make great leaders (transferable skills of communicating, seeing the bigger picture, common sense, and pragmatism)

WALL11: Matthew Stewart shares how you can add a page to your book of life04 Apr 202200:57:15

You know how you have those friends from a while ago, and you mainly stay in contact with them by occasionally seeing what they're up to on social media?

I've been friends with today's guest since 2008, and when I glance at his socials, I'm pretty amazed to see him taking groups mountain biking around Nepal, on the Kokoda track in Papua New Guinea, and running marathons in NYC.

At an early age, Matt had some profound experiences that taught him how powerful they are at bringing perspective and clarity to life. Wanting to help businesses and individuals dream big and have their own experiences, Matt become uniquely qualified as a Physiotherapist and Chiropractor.

He is the CEO of The Custodian Way which owns a group of companies that all share one common mission which is: " To create a global movement and deliver 30 Million Impact Moments every year by the year 2030".

The Custodian Way owns these brands:

  1. PEAK Sport And Spine Centre
  2. Employ Health Aust and NZ
  3. Experience Not Felt Possible

Matt also sits on the Board of the 4ASDKids Charity.

In this conversation, you'll hear how Matt:

  • Casts away constraint to dream big
  • Creates non-traditional ways of working (including pragmatic, overhauled approaches for recruitment and remuneration)
  • Lives his values through daily decisions
  • Acknowledges the power of language to dismiss social constructs

WALL10: How can you get time with someone (who has no time)? Two by Tuesday28 Mar 202200:11:55

You want to get time in the diary with someone but you're unable to access them, why is that?

Listen, or watch me break it down in these week's Two by Tuesday (Youtube)

I believe it comes down to these two elements:
- Interest (Their Interest vs Self Interest)
- Relationship (Known vs Unknown)

As you listen in who is the person you're targeting? What can you increase in order to get that time in the diary?

WALL09: Do you pass the free time Fiji test (Two by Tuesday with Leanne Hughes)21 Mar 202200:11:54

The Fiji Test: If you, or any of your team members were to get whisked off to a three-week surprise vacation, with no devices and no ability to give notice, could the rest of the team seamlessly step in and take over the role?

To celebrate the release of Jenny Blake's new book, Free Time: Lose the Busywork, Love Your Business, I've dedicated this Two by Tuesday to mapping out what the Free Time process looks like, based on two elements (Time vs Reward)... yes, I sneakily borrowed the idea from the famous Effort: Reward ratio!

As you listen in, think about your business, or work. Which quadrant are you in?

WALL08: How to create the perfect employee onboarding experience (Two by Tuesday)14 Mar 202200:11:23

What does it take to create the perfect onboarding experience?

Too often, companies get swept away with hours upon hours of online module content, yet they miss a key second element: The Unofficial stuff! That sense of connection, of belonging to a business.

In today's Two by Tuesday, I talk about both the Official and Unofficial aspects you need to consider when mapping out your employee onboarding experience.

Listen in, or watch the video

Reflect on your last role, which quadrant did that onboarding experience fit into?

WALL07: How do you build credibility (Two by Tuesday)07 Mar 202200:11:45

One question I often get from people in service-based businesses is "How do I build awareness, and credibility of the work that I do?"

Watch me explain this 2 x 2 concept over on YouTube.

In my Booked Out Facilitator framework, I talk about three key things: Your content, your connection and your craft.

However, to answer this question, I believe you have to be great at both the Craft (What you do) and your Content (How you share your ideas).

In today's Two by Tuesday, I encourage you to map yourself on this quadrant, and listen to the ideas that I share, to help you get up to Prime Time!

WALL06: Two Friends Reflect on Shane Warne: The Aussie Cricketer Who Lived Large with James Carpenter and Leanne Hughes05 Mar 202200:25:06

I wasn’t expecting to bring you this episode today but I woke up this morning to the news that Australian cricketing legend, Shane Warne died overnight at the age of 52.

Hey, you can also watch this conversation on YouTube.

If I had to select anyone to be the face of the message behind the premise of this show (Work and Live Large), it would be Shane Warne.

So, who better to reflect on the life of Warnie, than spin-bowler and cricketing tragic, James Carpenter (JC).

When I lived in Broome, WA - James and I would often talk about Warnie and how much we loved him.  So, today was a good opportunity to hop on a Zoom call to share our thoughts and reflections on the impact of Warnie's life on us.

What I loved most about Warnie was his ability to live large, to play it fearlessly. To be okay with making mistakes.

No one else did it better.

Vale Shane Warne.

WALL05: Steve Bleistein - Stop defending disruption, be the disruptor01 Mar 202200:28:35

"Disruption is not something you defend against, it’s something you should instigate" - Steve Bleistein, Relansa.

"Work and Live Large" - what does that phrase mean to you?

Today, let's focus on the "Work Large" element. Instead of defending against  disruption, you'll hear a call to be bold and decisive.

I think the word "Disruption" certainly conjures up negative elements and it can get a bad wrap. Today I'm sharing with you a behind the scenes, firestyle type chat with Steve Bleistein.

Steve and I are in a growth cycle consultant group together. Every time he says something, it provokes a reaction, a reflection, or a new idea from me. So, what perfect opportunity to dig into his ideas by recording our chat in sharing it with you!

What I learnt from this conversation is that we all have the ability within ourselves to be a disruptor - to make a decision, and be bold in our execution.

About today's guest

Steven Bleistein, CEO and founder of Relansa, Inc., and author of Rapid Organizational Change is one of those rare international experts who bridges Western and Japanese business thinking. Fluent in Japanese and French,

Steve has attracted clients from businesses such as Adidas, Michelin, AIG Group and Barilla. Working with leaders and their teams, Steve helps both Japanese and international companies create their own new realities.

Prior to Relansa, Steve represented the Balanced Scorecard Institute in Japan. Steve helped companies achieve new heights with his expertise in strategy and strategy management, and is one of only two non-Japanese ever to speak at Japan’s Balanced Scorecard Society annual conference. The other non-Japanese was Professor Robert Kaplan of Harvard University himself, inventor of the Balanced Scorecard.

Steve serves as Vice Chair of the Independent Business Committee of the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan, where he takes an active role in supporting entrepreneurial and leadership capabilities inside Japanese companies. He runs the popular “Conversation With” luncheon series where he leads an on-stage conversation with a local business leader guest.

In addition, Steve serves on the board of Tsukuba International School, supporting the school’s leadership on the path toward full International Baccalaureate certification.

Prior to returning to Japan in 2009, Steve drove innovation on a multi-million dollar project at Australia’s premier government IT innovation think-tank NICTA, forging collaborative relationships with Japanese IT giants. In addition, Steve assisted Japan’s Cabinet Office on issues related to e-government strategy, and organized joint meetings between Japanese Government and Australian Commonwealth officials.

Steve holds a PhD in computer science and an International MBA. He is a U.S. citizen by birth, and an Australian citizen by naturalization. A recent convert to avid sportsman, you will frequently find Steve in the early morning hours wh

WALL04: When should you communicate change? (Two by Tuesday)28 Feb 202200:10:38

In this Two by Tuesday episode I explore the question, "When is the best time to communicate change" using a 2 x 2 matrix.

Often when you’re going through change, or leading change within a company, it’s the timing and way you communicate that seems to have a bigger impact on people, over the actual change.

"So much of life is not about whether you're good or bad, or right or wrong, or can afford or not afford - it's just about timing." - A. A. Gill, 'Uncle Dysfunctional'

I consider two things when it comes to communicating change in this episode:
- Certainty of the change (x axis)
- Perception of the impact (positive or negative)

Enjoy the listen! Or, watch my explanation on YouTube.

WALL03: Habits and my love/hate relationship with streaks23 Feb 202200:15:22

This is a surprise solo minisode that I felt compelled to record, after seeing that Apple Podcast assumes that my show goes out every day.

I love the challenge of a habit streak.
I also sometimes hate a habit streak.

Why is that?

Well, a few reasons that I'll share on today's show. My most recently example is getting to a 98 day streak on my Peloton app, only to lose it when I visited the USA recently.

It's hard to get back on the bike when you lose a streak.

But I found a way of doing that - that involved some cool, asynchronous community time.

The Encore - I think it's a neat way of creating behaviour change that hasn't been exploited enough in our work and our lives.

I share my thoughts on The Encore in this episode.

Enjoy!

WALL46: How to be Yourself and Professional at the Same Time with Mel Kettle14 Nov 202200:37:43

When is it okay for us to call it quits and stop pushing through? How can we embody the real essence of professionalism as we set the boundaries we need as we live?

Watch our conversation on YouTube!

Have you ever sacrificed your precious “me time” to do work for your clients and/or attend a meeting for a job you don’t really love?

More often than not, we tend to say yes to literally everything as we dive into the depths of doing business. Just because we fear what might happen if we refuse, we even sometimes end up losing ourselves.

But as people say, there’s always a time for us to push through and for us to fail fast. It’s of utmost importance that we work on being self-aware so we can work and live large, especially around the things that are really important to us. After all, being a professional isn’t limited to being dressed like a professional. You can still reach great heights, wearing just a simple shirt and pants, as long as you’re in alignment with what you truly want in life.

Mel Kettle is an internationally recognized thought leader on fully connected leaderships and communication. Her clients include leaders, teams, and organizations that want to achieve real connection and sustained engagement.

She is the host of the “This Connected Life” podcast and the author of two books, “The Social Association” published in 2018, and “Fully Connected: Focusing on how great leaders prioritize themselves, reclaim their energy, and find joy”.

Mel is a good friend of mine; I was at her book launch recently in Brisbane, and it was such a great and beautiful night, hearing her talk about boundaries and other related things. I am certain that this episode will be a value-rich experiment between the thoughts we have in mind, so make sure to sit back and relax as we learn more from the ever-so-receptive Mel.

In this conversation, you’ll hear Mel discuss:

  • What it takes to leap into an experiment to back yourself and your decisions
  • How that relates to the self-awareness that you have
  • The story behind her decision to move to the Sunshine Coast and leave the city of Brisbane during COVID, and why she’s so happy that she did it
  • Things about boundaries, especially when it triggers work-life balance concerns
  • The theme around professionalism in work context and how that plays out

WALL 01: What happens in Las Vegas, Leanne shares in this episode21 Feb 202200:28:35

Two weeks ago, I spontaneously hopped on a plane to attend a workshop in Las Vegas, run by the Million Dollar Consultant, Alan Weiss.

The premise behind this podcast has actually EVERYTHING to do with this trip, and the importance of disrupting yourself.

Episode 1 is a combination episode - introducing you to the show (thank you for being here!) and also giving you the behind the scenes glance of my whirlwind trip across the Pacific Ocean.

In this episode, I share:

  • What the new show is about!
  • The reasons behind making the decision to jump on a plane, with 5 days notice
  • Insight into international travel (from an Australian's perspective)
  • Highlights reel of lessons I learnt from Alan (and my peers) while in Las Vegas

Oh by the way, I've convinced Alan to come to Australia. So good! Get in touch if you'd like more details.

Trailer: Why is this worth your time?20 Feb 202200:01:45

Let me guess, if you're anything like me, you:

Are currently reading 5 books at the same time
Have 18 different browser tabs open
Have 1700 emails and notifications to respond to
... and, you already listen to 60 podcasts!

Why do you need another podcast to add to your list?

i’m not here to replace your current listens, I’m here to compliment them.

The goal of the show is that you listen to an episode and think “Oh cool, I’ve got this! I’ll make my move now!”

Here's what I'll share with you on the show:

  • A focus on backing yourself / grabbing opportunities / disrupting yourself / getting out of your own head
  • Social psychology / group psychology (think: Influence, power, resistance, creating a movement, building community)
  • Encouraging people (and businesses) to dream bigger, and to stop projecting the past into the future
  • Word of mouth marketing and evangelism
  • Work and life hacks, based on what i’m thinking, reading and listening
  • Share with you some incredibly cool stories and lessons from people all around the world

I’m your host Leanne Hughes and one thing I’m pretty good at is taking action when things aren’t necessarily ready, and having a win because of that approach (even if "the thing" hasn’t worked, I’m always rewarded when I go for it!).

I'm based in Brisbane, Australia. I’m a consultant who partners with organisations  to create workplace mojo that drives performance.

I also work with consultants, facilitators and trainers on helping them book out their business.

I love working out in the morning, being outside, lazy long lunches, sunsets over the ocean and living a large live.

Tune in and you’ll hear a mix of solo and interview episodes on the weekly, jump on the email list at leannehughes.com/subscribe and you can always connect with me at hello@leannehughes.com

WALL44: Why You Must Read Becoming Myself by Irvin D Yalom31 Oct 202200:17:35

It is just so amazing, having read a book that’s written in such a beautiful and easy way, that it has made me want to end my day early so I can spend time in bed, reading it page by page.

Recently, I’ve purchased Irvin D. Yalom’s book “Becoming Myself: A Psychiatrist’s Memoir” after hearing about it from a friend.

It’s such a book rich in value where he shared his reflections on life and development. As I read, these then led me to think as well, reflecting on the origin of my own self and the meaning of the life I’ve been living.

Not only is this of great help to us as human beings, but also, there’s a lot to learn if you’re working in a group setting. From existentialism to isolation, meaninglessness, mortality, and freedom, Irvin has got it all covered, resulting in this masterpiece.

So I hope you join me today, even though this episode is completely new and unique. Because here is where I’ll speak to share how this book helped me see life from a better perspective, mirroring my work and live large statement.

In this conversation, you’ll hear me discuss:

Conversation moments:

  • (00:00:00) Episode intro
  • (00:00:18) Irvin D. Yalom, his book, and how I got myself a copy
  • (00:02:58) The connection Irvin’s thought process has with the podcast
  • (00:04:27) Short biography of Irvin D. Yalom
  • (00:05:58) Highlight #1: The power of group dynamics
  • (00:08:14) Highlight #2: Irvin’s insight on how each individual has a different inner world
  • (00:10:59) Highlight #3: Irvin writing a summary of a previous meeting then giving that to the group the day before the next meeting
  • (00:13:24) Highlight #4: “The volume of your background music will obscure the true chords of the analysis”
  • (00:14:08) Highlight #5: Alan Willis and his dog, Monty
