  • How mental health affects leadership and brand alignment
  • The importance of consistency for building a strong marketing presence
  • Using AI and technology to enhance small business marketing

Claire Milligan: How Private Equity Drives Efficiency and Strategic Leadership05 Nov 202400:27:26

About Claire Milligan:

Whether she’s helping businesses transform their cloud spending or hitting the slopes as a ski patroller, Claire Milligan thrives on distilling complex problems down to their core issues — and turning these pragmatic findings into groundbreaking solutions. Through a journey spanning marketing, UX, and leadership roles at tech companies like Tallie and SpringAhead, she’s meticulously constructed a diverse skill set built upon hands-on expertise and an unrelenting thirst for knowledge. Now, as the CEO of startup Aimably, she’s applying her unique superpowers to help businesses grow by spending smarter and dramatically reducing their cloud costs.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Claire Milligan discuss:

  • Private equity’s role in transforming and growing companies
  • The expanding financial responsibilities of CTOs
  • Cost reduction and financial efficiency in software companies
  • Leadership continuity through acquisitions and turnover
  • Aligning operations with long-term financial objectives

Key Takeaways:

  • Private equity helps companies transition from good to great by rigorously assessing core operations, eliminating inefficiencies, and focusing on mission-driven growth.
  • Successful CTOs in private equity contexts must adopt a financial mindset, overseeing budgets, cost management, and return on investment for technology spending.
  • Evaluating every role within a team based on adaptability and alignment with evolving business priorities is essential for CTOs managing acquisitions.
  • Companies preparing for potential acquisition can benefit from acting as though they are selling, which enhances operational efficiency and scalability.
  • Cloud infrastructure spending can significantly impact profitability, so companies should regularly audit and optimize their cloud costs.

"The whole goal of private equity is to take a good company and make it great by examining everything as an opportunity to stop, reset, re-evaluate, and make sure you’re not wasting time or resources on things that aren’t core to your values or mission, driving much more success out of the same core architecture.” — Claire Milligan

  • Creating learning organizations
  • The importance of failure in learning
  • Fostering a learning culture
  • Aligning learning with organizational strategy
  • The concept of Learning Time Off (LTO)

Key Takeaways:

  • Learning organizations need to provide employees with both time and space to engage in training and coaching during work hours.
  • While failure can be a valuable learning tool, it must be managed differently depending on the industry, such as in marketing versus surgery.
  • Learning programs should be customized based on feedback from new hires and aligned with leadership's vision and goals.
  • A baseline recommendation for LTO is two to three hours every other week for employees to focus on learning activities.

Miriam Meima: The New Wave Of Leadership13 Dec 202200:36:29

Miriam Meima has been a coach & facilitator for over twenty years, dedicating her life to studying the overlap between business and psychology. Miriam has coached founders and executives at hundreds of companies, including a dozen $1B+. She often partners with companies from Series B all the way through going public. She works 1:1 with senior leaders, facilitates team offsites, and develops customized leadership development journeys for leaders at all levels. Her specialty is in helping people unlock the next level of performance while maximizing authenticity.

Miriam’s credentials include an MA in Organizational & Management Development and a BA in Business & Psychology. She is a Master Certified Coach with the International Coaching Federation, a Fellow at the Harvard Institute of Coaching, and a member of Forbes Coaches Council.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Miriam Meima discuss:

  • What’s the difference between therapy and coaching?
  • The gift of things shutting down around us
  • Relationship between competence and intuition
  • Accepting yourself and relaxing into your wisdom

Key Takeaways:

  • Therapy is standing in the present and looking backward while coaching is about standing in the present and looking forwards. The two have different vantage points and different intentions.
  • When things shut down, we were forced to look in the mirror and think about who are the people that matter and what are the experiences that matter. We had the opportunity individually and collectively to reset.
  • Being competent is what unlocks your ability to trust yourself and therefore allows you to be drawn to a certain direction through your intuition.
  • A lot of challenge at all ages for humans comes from feeling like we have to prove ourselves - the breeding grounds for insecurity. If we allow ourselves to feel accepted, we could trust ourselves more and relax into our wisdom.

"If we can all become students of ourselves we’ll start to notice we feel pulled in certain places, and that's usually tuition at work." —  Miriam Meima

Michele Sammons is an inspirational author, intuitive teacher, and highly-attuned guide who works with clients worldwide helping them transform their lives.

As an empath and intuitive, Michele’s light-hearted, joyful approach embraces people right where they are on their spiritual path and gently guides them to personal clarity and understanding. She is passionate about working with Spirit to uplift others while spreading love and joy along the way.

Michele’s work is featured in Authority Magazine, Thrive Global, and Well Defined.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Michele Sammons discuss:

  • People’s innate ability to be intuitive
  • Intuitive brainstorming
  • Intuition is the path
  • Nurturing intuition

Key Takeaways:

  • We are all born naturally intuitive but as we grow older, the tendency is that we lose connection to it and get trained out of our natural ability.
  • People have different ways of tapping into their intuition, but your ability to be intuitive is not limited by space. Through intention and giving yourself permission, you can let your creativity and ideas flow.
  • Intuition is a delivery mechanism, it’s the path in which you can receive guidance.
  • Get quiet and spend some time in silence. Check in with yourself and pay attention to your emotions and your body. Find a calm, centered, neutral space so that you can tap into your higher self.

"Spend some time in silence. That's when our intuition has room to grow and show itself. Let the outer world dim its lights a little bit so we can turn to the inner world." —  Michele Sammons

Donna Loughlin: How Visionaries Create Followers29 Nov 202200:38:56

Donna Loughlin is the Founder of LMGPR and known for her work with futurists and innovators.  She has launched more than 500 companies, taking them from stealth to market leaders since forming her agency in 2002.

She is also the host of BeforeItHappened, a leading narrative podcast featuring visionaries and the moments, events, and realizations that inspired them to change our lives for the better.

Donna excels in the realm of storytelling and uses those skills to propel new companies into the mainstream.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Donna Loughlin discuss:

  • How robots could improve working conditions
  • Listening will never be obsolete
  • Opening ourselves up to change
  • How to be more innovative

Key Takeaways:

  • Robots are not taking our jobs but there are jobs that robots are very willing to take, jobs that are either too tedious or too dangerous for human beings.
  • You can never take the human factor out of industry and life. Only people have the ability to listen, understand, and have empathy for others. Making decisions and other cognitive functions are other examples.
  • We need to have more gratitude and less attitude. Be open to change and to conversations especially when there are differences in opinions.
  • Surround yourself with talented people. Ask questions and learn from others. Know your talents and apply them.

"Robots can perform tasks and can do some miraculous things. But they can't replace our cognitive thinking, human engagement, and interaction." —  Donna Loughlin

Sybil Ackerman-Munson: Create Your Financial Legacy and Do Your Good22 Nov 202200:31:59

Sybil Ackerman-Munson is a nonprofit professional and foundation advisor. She founded Do Your Good, an LLC dedicated to helping individuals and businesses make lasting, meaningful contributions to the world. In September, she will be launching her Crack the Code Course, step-by-step lessons on how to build a philanthropic life.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Sybil Ackerman-Munson discuss:

  • How you could do more harm than good without due diligence
  • For-profit business concepts that are useful for nonprofit managers
  • Preventing burn out in the nonprofit space
  • Adjusting your pitch according to the kind of donor

Key Takeaways:

  • Being an effective giver will take certain due diligence, especially if you have a lot to give. Giving without knowing the community and the reputation of a nonprofit can do more harm than good.
  • Nonprofit founders generally start companies to do good, but to sustain their organization, they need to have studied how to operate a for-profit business and how to collaborate with others.
  • The motivation for everyone ultimately is to do good, but the good can only be sustained if those who initiate and manage that change is properly incentivized. It’s not wrong for nonprofit workers to earn more.
  • There are three kinds of donors. First is the sustainer donor, they are the ones that love your group and will fund you year after year. Second is the campaigner donor, somebody who cares about a specific cause. The third is the launcher donor and they want to fill in the gaps.

"You, as a nonprofit, need to know the kind of donor you're talking to. In my over a decade of experience, I've found that there's three distinct types of donors. And if you talk to the one wrong, you're not going to even get in the door." —  Sybil Ackerman-Munson

Danielle Mulvey: Never Settle15 Nov 202200:37:00

Danielle Mulvey is a former flight attendant-turned-entrepreneur who has cracked the code on recruiting, hiring, and retaining what she refers to as “5-Star Employees”.

Never one to settle for average, Danielle has scaled her several companies to over $50 million in annual revenue while spending less than 10 hours each week overseeing their operations.

Danielle’s own team of trusted 5-Star Employees provides her with the freedom to spend the rest of her workweek guiding other entrepreneurs through podcasting, workshops, and community curating.

In addition to running her companies and assisting other entrepreneurs, Danielle is the Chief Curator of The ALL IN Company Community, which strategically advises other entrepreneurs on attracting and hiring 5-Star Employees. She has been developing, testing, and sharing these ideas for more than 10 years now, with a staggering 90% success rate! Danielle attributes this success to her undeniable gift to identify and nurture 5-Star Employees. She knows in order to succeed, leaders need to get comfortable with the uncomfortable and go all in on their employees, who will reciprocate and go all in on the company.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Danielle Mulvey discuss:

  • Casting a wide net
  • Hiring based on alignment
  • Why is it important to be aligned
  • The difference between limber and flexible

Key Takeaways:

  • One out of seven candidates is a potential five-star employee. The key is to cast a wide net, attracting as many candidates as possible and getting out of the box with your recruitment strategies.
  • Hire people who are aligned with your true core values. That’s the foundation of any business. If people aren’t aligned, the relationship will not last.
  • If you don’t love what you’re doing, you’ll go to work and be in pain the whole day through. This is a great cause for inefficiency in the workplace, people can’t go into flow and they’ll probably tap out  after three hours at work.
  • If you’re an employer, you’re looking for limber people, not flexible people. A limber person is someone who’s amenable to change, not rigid, someone who can go with the flow and do what’s asked of them.

"When you're working with like-minded people who have the same core values, I mean, that's where the magic happens.." —  Danielle Mulvey

Tim O'Neal: 30th Anniversary: Lessons Learned from Excellence in Leadership Award Winner08 Nov 202200:20:43

With nearly three decades of experience working in the thrift industry, Tim O’Neal has spent the past 18 years focused on the vision of ending poverty through the power of work.

When O’Neal was brought on with Goodwill of Central Arizona, the organization was in serious financial trouble and at risk of having its membership removed by Goodwill Industries International. O’Neal’s arrival marked a turning point in the 70-year history of the organization, and his leadership was instrumental in keeping the organization running by increasing retail operations by 3000 percent during his tenure as the Vice President of Retail Operations (1999 – 2007).

O’Neal brought a distinct level of professionalism to the retail side of the organization, a characteristic that quickly spread throughout the organization. O’Neal values the time and effort of his employees above all else. He knows the successful reach of Goodwill of Central and Northern Arizona’s mission is due to the hard work and innovation all employees exhibit every day. O’Neal recognizes talent and feels it is important for the organization to cultivate leadership at all levels. He is most proud of the transparency the nonprofit presents, as well as the workplace culture that regularly earns top marks on “Best Places to Work” rankings.

Goodwill’s founder, Edgar Helms, envisioned providing people in need with the skills and opportunities that lead to self-sufficiency by providing a hand-up, not a handout. O’Neal believes wholeheartedly in carrying out this mission to better the lives of everyone in our state. He knows the best way to bring a positive impact to Arizona is to work together, collaborate, and cultivate partnerships with community members, organizations, and leaders.

Tim O’Neal is proud of his employees and proud of the positive impact Goodwill of Central and Northern Arizona leaves on the local community.

O’Neal holds a Certificate in Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit Management from the Harvard Business School Executive Education program. O’Neal graduated in June 2010 from Goodwill Industries International’s Executive Leadership Development program, which drives excellence, strategic planning, and personal development skills for top executives in the industry.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Tim O'Neal discuss:

  • Creating impact through servant leadership
  • The purpose is community
  • Taking care of your team
  • Communication and transparency

Key Takeaways:

  • We have different job titles, but nobody's more important than the next person. Take care of your people and they’ll take care of everything else.
  • The purpose is community, taking care of your fellow humans. No matter what people think, you and I can make a difference and that’s why it matters.
  • As a leader, make sure that your organization has enough resources to weather any kind of storm that comes up. Be careful about the decisions you’re making today. Keep in mind that you have a responsibility to care for your team when tougher times arrive.
  • Why wouldn’t you want to communicate and be transparent? It saves you the hassle of having to relay messages over and over to make sure that everybody’s on the same page.

Bryan Clayton: You Get the Culture You Deserve01 Nov 202200:28:19

Bryan has been in the lawn care industry his entire working life starting with mowing neighbor’s lawns in high school to ultimately founding Peach Tree Inc, a market-leading landscape company in the southeast, and growing the firm to over 125 employees. In 2013 he navigated the successful acquisition of Peach Tree to Landscapes USA a national provider of commercial landscape services. The inspiration for GreenPal is born out of the frustration Bryan observed while operating the landscape business, and how difficult it is for homeowners to find, schedule, and pay a reliable small lawn care professional. Bryan is in charge of GreenPal’s strategic direction and growth to become the platform that powers the lawn care industry.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Bryan Clayton discuss:

  • How culture can be an advantage
  • Leaders are responsible for the culture
  • How you could fix a bad culture
  • Building a culture vs cultivating a culture

Key Takeaways:

  • People choose companies based on how they feel and one of the things that affect how they feel about the company is its culture.
  • If you’re a leader in a space, then you are primarily responsible for the office culture. You get what you give out, your people reflect how you are and how you treat them. If going to work feels like a chain around your neck, guess how your team members feel.
  • If you want to fix your culture, focus on doing small things consistently and build up from there. Learn to genuinely care about the people in your company, know their names, and be sincerely curious about their lives and how they are doing.
  • Building a culture in your company is less like being a construction worker and more like being a gardener. The culture of your company needs constant tending, it’s not a project that has an endpoint - it’s a living thing that needs continuous nourishment and growth.

"As the CEO, chief, boss, or whatever you call yourself, you get exactly the culture that you deserve.  You hired these people, you brought them on to the mission with you, and believe it or not, they are reflecting your level of enthusiasm." —  Bryan Clayton

Josh Fonger: Getting Consistent Results25 Oct 202200:27:49

Josh is an international business consultant, coach, and speaker. He has the unique experience of personally helping hundreds of businesses grow simply using the WTS Method. His specialty is taking stressed-out entrepreneurs from working "in" their business to working "on" their business using systems so that profit and freedom can become a consistent mechanical reality.

Josh has personally consulted or coached over 1000 business owners from more than 100 industries, from small startup businesses to $500M enterprises.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Josh Fonger discuss:

  • Taking a step back
  • Documenting your work
  • Empowering your team
  • Getting consistent results

Key Takeaways:

  • If you step back and document all the problems that happen on a consistent basis, you could be better prepared to face them instead of just reacting each time.
  • Write down your whole day, track everything all through out for at least two days. It’s going to be tedious, but it will open your eyes and allow you to be able to recognize the recurring problems and inefficiencies.
  • If you’re a manager, you’ve got to delegate the tasks properly. You need to have full documentation and clarity on the instructions on how to do the task correctly from start to finish. By doing this, you could also empower your team so that they know exactly what to do.
  • The only way to get consistent and controlled results is to fully document the instructions for a task. Doing this doesn’t only bring clarity to what the team member is supposed to do but it also helps them know what is expected of them.

"If you develop and then document the systems that make up what you do, what your team does, eventually, those problems aren't gonna be happening anymore because you're gonna be cutting out variability, you're gonna be cutting out waste in terms of time and materials." —  Josh Fonger

Tony Child: Success On Purpose18 Oct 202200:32:39

Tony Child is the Founder and Owner of Elevated Worldwide, whose mission is to elevate businesses worldwide through the daily process of creating habits that produce desired results. He focuses on helping companies reach their goals while implementing positive change in the lives of their employees with time-tested and research-based processes. Tony has mentored executives, high-performing entrepreneurs, and Olympic athletes. Aside from his active guidance, through his book “VisionShift: A 10-Week Program to Transforming Your Life, Company and Industry So You Can Have, Do and Give More”, Tony continues making a great impact on leaders’ lives.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Tony Child discuss:

  • How mindset makes a huge difference
  • Bringing awareness into our programming
  • The disadvantage of living an unconscious life
  • Shifting from “not enough” to “more than enough”

Key Takeaways:

  • If you change the way you see things then the things you see will change. Changing your thoughts from negative or neutral to positive can change results dramatically.
  • Bring the unconscious out into the conscious mind. Through therapy, coaching, journaling, and looking at the beliefs you hold about life, you’ll be able to see what is essentially your “programming” and rewrite it as necessary.
  • If we don’t make ourselves aware of our own internal programming, we will have the disadvantage of being controlled and limited by it subconsciously.
  • Most people are programmed to see life from a lens of “not enough”. Confirmation bias sets in and we see evidence of what we already believe is true. Shift your lens from “not enough” to “more than enough”. One way to make progress in this is by practicing gratitude.

"We've got to rewrite some things because your beliefs right now - it’s not programmed to take you there." —  Tony Child

Steven Gaffney: Getting The Unsaid Said11 Oct 202200:36:40

Steven Gaffney is a leading expert on creating Consistently High Achieving Organizations (CHAO)™ including high-achieving teams, honest communication, and change leadership. Steven has worked in more than 25 different industries and market segments for over 25 years. He uses cross-discipline solutions and best practices from other industry sectors to bring fresh, innovative, and consistently successful approaches to his clients. He works directly with top leaders from Fortune 500 companies, associations, and the U.S. government and military; he is also an author, speaker, and trusted advisor.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Steven Gaffney discuss:

  • Honest communication in the workplace
  • Providing an environment of emotional safety
  • Encouraging people to be more candid
  • Giving negative feedback

Key Takeaways:

  • The biggest problem in communication is not in what people say but it's actually in what they don't say to each other or what they leave out.
  • There’s a difference between being told that you are in a safe place and feeling that you are in a safe place. People want to tell the truth, so it's important we provide an environment of emotional safety.
  • Create emotional safety. If you’re a leader in your organization, you must initiate and promote speaking candidly. Also, reward honesty. Encourage people to be more honest and give and receive feedback.
  • When you give honest negative feedback, be ready also to give an actionable step that’s measurable and within a time frame. Ask them how you could help them complete their task and establish accountability.

Geoff has been in the experience industry for 40+ years, and as a creative leader has worked on everything from the opening ceremonies for the Rio 2007 Pan American Games to the grand opening of Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi, the world's largest indoor theme park, in 2018.

Before starting Creative Principals, he worked as Executive Creative Director at The Brand Experience, where he led a talented team of writers, designers, videographers, programmers, producers, and multi-media experts who delivered award-winning brand experiences for Fortune 500 companies, including Honeywell, Lockheed Martin, and IBM.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Geoff Thatcher discuss:

  • The intersection of creativity and leadership for transformative outcomes.
  • Overcoming the challenges of getting teams to adopt and implement creative visions.
  • Identifying individual strengths and weaknesses within teams to promote creativity.
  • Client engagement in the creative process and managing expectations for novel ideas.
  • The transformative impact of AI tools on creative processes including design and concept illustration.

Key Takeaways:

  • The fusion of innovation and visionary guidance is crucial for actualizing creative ideas, illustrating that leadership is as much about nurturing others' ideas as it is about having them.
  • A fertile ground for innovation and collaborative success is created when each team member's unique talents and 'allowable weaknesses' are acknowledged.
  • Involving clients and team members in the genesis of an idea fosters a sense of ownership and eases the adoption process.
  • Artificial intelligence is reshaping the landscape of creativity, as Dean Newlund and Geoff Thatcher explore tools like Mid Journey, DALL-E, and Suno, recognizing their dual role as enablers and disruptors in the artistic realm.
  • As brought to life by the collaborative production of an AI-composed song, embracing the synergy between human ingenuity and artificial intelligence blossoms into extraordinary and pioneering creations.

Stacey Brown Randall: Generating Referrals Naturally Without Manipulation or Asking04 Oct 202200:29:56

Stacey Brown Randall is the multiple award-winning author of Generating Business Referrals Without Asking, host of the Roadmap to Grow Your Business podcast and national speaker.

Stacey teaches business owners how to generate referrals naturally… without manipulating, incentivizing or even asking.

She has been featured in national publications like Entrepreneur magazine, Investor Business Daily, Forbes, and more.

She received her Master’s in Organizational Communication and is married with three kids.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Stacey Brown Randall discuss:

  • Understanding that referrals aren’t about you
  • Being genuine and practicing gratitude
  • Creating a good client experience
  • Going into a prospecting meeting with the right mindset

Key Takeaways:

  • The first step to getting more referrals is to understand how referrals even happen. Referrals aren’t about you, it’s about the referral source. If they understand the problem a person is facing and they know that you can solve it, they’ll refer the person to you.
  • Be genuine and always put the heart of the relationship first and foremost. Also, you must always remember to express gratitude when somebody refers you. Send a handwritten thank you note, not an email or a text message that can easily be forgotten or buried in their inbox.
  • Work on the experience that you give to your client. Don’t ask for direct referral, instead, give them a referable experience. Do good work and work on the relationship.
  • Have the right mindset when going into a meeting. There’s a big difference between the mindset of “I want this person to hire me” and “I want this person to adore me, help me, and refer me.”

"Until you can impact how they feel about you. You certainly can't direct how they think about you." —  Stacey Brown Randall

Lisa Morton: Turning Adversity into Focused Purpose27 Sep 202200:43:08

Lisa Morton is the CEO and founder of Roland Dransfield, one of the most established communications agencies in Manchester, England. For the last 24 years, Lisa has worked to forge meaningful, lasting business relationships that create both business growth and social impact alongside her team of award-winning strategists, journalists, creatives, digital, and social media specialists. Now with a London office and a partnership with an LA-based

agency, of which the founder is a former Roland Dransfield team member, Lisa is continuing to expand Roland Dransfield and explore new paths for growth.

Lisa’s commitment to purpose-driven work is exemplified by Roland Dransfield’s “We Built This City” podcast, a podcast series that hears from Mancunians, born, bred, and adopted, who put their heart into Greater Manchester. The podcast has been nominated for Best Business Podcast by the prestigious British Podcast Awards and celebrates stories of determination, loyalty, and diversity across culture, arts, politics, sport, music, and business. Roland Dransfield’s other recent award wins include PR & Marketing Agency of the Year, Marketing Personality of the Year (Downtown in Business), Best PR/Social Agency Campaign (MPA), Small PR Agency of the Year (MPA), PR Agency of the Year (MPA) and Best PR Agency (The Talk of Manchester). They are currently shortlisted for Prolific North Best PR Agency and Best Digital Campaign and Best Social Impact Award 2020 (Downtown in Business), among others.

25 years ago, it became apparent to Lisa that the only way to work somewhere that had suitable goals and values as an enterprise was to start it herself. Almost immediately, her talent for creating relationships became apparent when Manchester suffered a devastating bombing. Lisa got involved heavily in rebuilding the city centre and over the years has played a large part in helping to regenerate neglected parts of the city centre to create the new key “pillar” neighborhoods that make up the city. As a result, Lisa has been at the forefront of the response to crises in her community, and her commitment to social impact in the business community has driven her to help others to do the same.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Lisa Morton discuss:

  • How crisis reveals our identity and creates progress
  • Organizations that stay and get stronger together
  • Adding value during adversities
  • Working with others who are aligned with your values

Key Takeaways:

  • Adversity can create a lot of beauty and positive progress. It is where our true identity is tested. We can only know who we really are or who our team members are when we go through a crisis.
  • Organizations that figured out who they were, what their purpose was, and what their values were are those that stayed together and got stronger.
  • Companies that add value during adversities will be remembered. Companies that don’t add value during adversities will also be remembered.
  • People will be able to work more effectively and happily when they work with others who are aligned with their own values and purpose. Ideally, organizations must choose clients that are aligned with their values and purpose.

"Plant trees you’ll never see. Leave a legacy out of respect for those who follow." —  Lisa Morton

He is the author of SEO Strategy & Skills, a college textbook through Stukent. • Why transparency is important
  • Owning your mistakes
  • Practicing transparency in hiring
  • Focusing more on the value you give

Key Takeaways:

  • People won’t feel bought into something if they don’t know what the something is 100%. Make sure that there’s transparency in the organization with your team and with your clients.
  • Whenever you mess up or something doesn’t go well, it’s important to own it. Be honest, be genuine, and be sincere. You don’t have to make such a big show about it, but you have to be vulnerable and admit what you did wrong internally and if necessary, externally as well.
  • A good practice when hiring is to ask the person if they could talk about stories of them working with other people. If they could talk about it, then it’s a really good sign. If you still feel uncomfortable, ask for more points of reference.
  • Focus on being the best and having the most value to give, not just on being SEO-noticeable. Because if you are the number one result, but the information you give is basic and bland, eventually, the stats are going to catch up and your true search rank will show.

"If you're afraid of your competitors taking your business, then you're not doing as good as them and you need to step up your game. Because in the digital marketing world, especially in SEO, your job is to be number one. Nobody goes to page two of Google. You've got to be so competitive that the competition comes to you." —  Steve Wiideman

Rachel Richter: How To Create Greater Alignment with Yourself, Team, and Organizations13 Sep 202200:58:30

Rachel Richter is the Founder and Managing Partner of INLIGN, the premier alignment coaching and advisory practice for teams and organizations seeking to rectify misalignment and enable optimal functioning. Rachel describes alignment as “culture in action.” Out of further demand, she also founded align&thrive, the alignment coaching practice for individuals with the purpose of making thriving attainable personally and professionally.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Rachel Richter discuss:

  • What alignment means
  • Scaling alignment from the individual
  • Rooting out the cause of misalignment
  • The connection between alignment and intuition

Key Takeaways:

  • We intuitively understand to a certain extent what alignment means since we can feel it when we are not in alignment. There is alignment when actions accurately reflect priorities and intentions.
  • Organizational alignment scales from the individual. Each one must see if they align with themselves while creating space between themselves and their role.
  • If you are a leader in your organization and you can see a serious lack of alignment, then you need to seek out where the source of misalignment is. Each part of your organizational structure must be incentivized to work towards the same thing.
  • Bringing more resurgence to alignment will bring more resurgence to intention and intuition and all these will maximize business performance and overall success.

"We don't come to a place of seeing each other and being able to collaborate if we don't have the same or mutually beneficial intentions." —  Rachel Richter

Ryan Margolin: Five Timeless Principles for Growing Yourself and Your Business06 Sep 202200:42:20

Ryan Margolin, the CEO of Professional Hair Labs, set out on a journey to help create the world's leading product in cosmetic bonding when his mother was poisoned by the harmful chemicals in the hair adhesive products commonly used in the industry. Inspired to keep the same thing from happening to anybody else, his family dove into the research and created their first hair care product free of harmful substances. Now, nearly 20 years later, Ryan is an international business leader and an entrepreneur who works in more than 15 different countries.

There, he helps create sustainable services and products in industries full of subpar and even harmful options.

With the help of Ryan’s expertise in effectively taking concepts and formulating strategies for success in multiple different industries, as well as his flexibility, clarity, and dedication to putting people first, Professional Hair Labs has expanded its manufacturing tenfold, grown to become one of the 500 fastest-growing companies in the US over the last 5 years, and has sold more than $50 million in product globally.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Ryan Margolin discuss:

  • Setting aside ego
  • Encouraging open communication
  • The difference is in the mindset
  • Controlling the fire

Key Takeaways:

  • If you truly want the business to succeed and grow, then egos must be set aside. People need to be able to drop the veil and look at themselves in the mirror to figure out how they could help the company best.
  • Encourage people to speak their thoughts openly. Set up open lines of communication between the organization’s members and executives.
  • Consider hiring a person with a good mindset. A person who may be less qualified than another but has a stronger and hungrier kind of mindset will be a better asset to your company than others. You don’t want to have that type of person slipping off your fingers.
  • Fear is like fire. You can step back and just watch it burn everything down. Or you could control the fire and not be afraid of it.

"It really comes down to mindset. It’s the difference between are you just gonna stay in the same place or are you gonna truly achieve what you know you can and realize your full potential." —  Ryan Margolin

Mike Maynard: How Can I Know If My Marketing Campaign Will Work?30 Aug 202200:39:44

Mike is the Managing Director/CEO of the Napier Group, a $7M PR and marketing agency for B2B technology companies. He is a self-confessed geek who loves talking about technology. He believes that combining the measurement, accountability, and innovation that he learned as an engineer with a passion for communicating internationally means Napier can help clients achieve their marketing goals sooner.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Mike Maynard discuss:

  • Why marketing is becoming more important
  • The difference between sales and marketing
  • Bridging the gaps between different departments
  • Marketing to your ideal customer

Key Takeaways:

  • Marketing is becoming more important because it’s responsible for the majority of the process the customer goes to. Sales get involved at the end to close the deal.
  • Sales are personal. Marketing focuses on audiences - individuals grouped together. Sales are one-to-one, and marketing is one-to-many.
  • You have to learn to work together with other departments. Stop sitting in your own silo, engage the other group and try to talk their language.
  • Picture your ideal customer and market to them. If any marketing tool or action doesn’t fit or won’t be received typically by your ideal customer, then don’t do it.

"The worst that you could do is to just start marketing. What you need to do is to make sure that what you’re gonna do is going to reach the right people and that it’s gonna be effective." —  Mike Maynard

Heenle Turner: 2 Simple Rules To Recruiting Your Dream Team!23 Aug 202200:23:26

Heenle is a certified HR Professional with a passion for helping businesses succeed. Heenle has provided HR consulting services to more than 200 businesses varying in size and industry.

Heenle's experience in sales, customer service, and people management has uniquely positioned her to partner with entrepreneurs and business leaders to recruit and retain a team of their own five-star employees.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Heenle Turner discuss:

  • Tailor-fitting your questions to find the best candidates
  • Recruiting for the best interest of the business owner
  • Dealing with candidates that ghost the interviewer
  • The qualities of a five-star employee

Key Takeaways:

  • You have to be intentional and specific with what you want from a candidate. Start with outlining what it is exactly you want or expect from a person first before creating specific and targeted questions according to that.
  • To come up with the right questions, know the intentions of the owner and what exactly is the need they want to fill in the company related to that role.
  • Candidates who decide not to show up for their interview are not a loss for the company. You probably don’t want a person with a lack of professionalism working for you anyway.
  • Look for a candidate whose core values align with the company’s, then see if they possess qualities of a five-star employee such as being supportive, collaborative, and proactive. Being able to complete their tasks, achieve their goals, provide quantifiable results for you, and more.

"What I challenge business owners to think about is time and efficiency, if you give everybody a shot, if you don’t have standards, if you don’t find the right people the first time then you’ll realize in a few weeks that they’re not the right fit, the people in your organization who are five star employees are gonna be picking up the slack for the new people… you’ll find yourself replacing them anyway." —  Heenle Turner

Yvan has helped companies of all sizes with their online advertising, technology integration, diversity recruiting efforts, and overall recruiting strategies. He has also had the pleasure of placing executives and emerging leaders into some of the most recognized companies.

He received his BS from the University of Cincinnati, his MBA from Thomas More University, received his Leadership Training from Harvard Business School, and his D&I Certification from eCornell.

Yvan lives in Cincinnati, OH with his wife and 3 kids and is a Parishioner at Guardian Angels Church in the community of Anderson. He is active in nonprofits and enjoys coaching youth sports. He is currently a Thomas More University Alumni Board Member.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Yvan Demosthenes discuss:

  • How to get better at attracting ideal interviewees
  • Developing an internal referral system
  • The consequence of not working on your culture
  • Looking for individuals with transferable skills

Key Takeaways:

  • Transparency and truthfulness are great ways to attract job seekers to your company. Be detailed and exact about the job description, not only of the requirements of the job but the attitude you want in a team member and what culture they’re coming into if they come into your company.
  • Who knows better what’s gonna fit within your company than your own employees? A robust internal referral program is a must in order to get quality candidates.
  • Developing and working on culture has to be as important as the short-term financial goals that keep your lights on. If you don’t prioritize it, it will make things worse either now or down the road.
  • There are not enough people to go around, you’re competing with others for the same person. Look for individuals with transferable skills.

Rabi Gupta: Balance Data and Intuition to Build the Best Relationships09 Aug 202200:34:06

Rabi Gupta is a serial entrepreneur who has worked alongside his current founding team for 10+ years. Throughout his career, Rabi and his team have worked on AI, Recommendation engines, social platforms, and enterprise software. His first startup iDubba/iCouchapp was a “TV show recommendations + social engagement” app that had 2M+ monthly active users at the time it got acquired. After that Rabi took a bold step moving to Silicon Valley to start a new company. While being there Rabi realized the importance of “relationship building” using gifts but got frustrated by the lack of technological innovation in the space. So he and his team used their prior experience to come up with the idea of using AI to solve the problem. That’s how EvaBot was born. Today EvaBot serves more than 1000 businesses including Fortune 50 companies and brands like Zendesk, Silicon Valley Bank, and Cigna to name a few.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Rabi Gupta discuss:

  • Utilizing technology to improve relationships
  • Hyperpersonal conversations and how they happen
  • Turning a lukewarm lead warmer through gifts
  • The best way you can give a gift

Key Takeaways:

  • Technology is becoming more and more like an appendage, an extension of a person’s self and it can aid in relationship building if we use it with that intent.
  • When people believe they are talking to computers or machines, they tend to be more open and share more data. This is called hyperpersonal conversation.
  • Giving personalized gifts is one of the best ways to boost your relationship with another person. It’s one of the fastest ways to turn a lukewarm lead warmer.
  • A good gift is one that is unexpected and is something that they’ve wanted all along. Giving the perfect gift is all about finding the balance between those two factors.

"It’s called hyperpersonal conversations. When humans talk to computers or machines, they are more open and they share more data." —  Rabi Gupta

Marc Reifenrath: How to Make Your Company’s Culture Your Secret Sauce02 Aug 202200:33:52

Marc Reifenrath is the co-founder and CEO of Spinutech. Spinutech has grown from a University Dorm start-up over 20 years ago to a multinational digital agency with 150+ team members across the U.S. In that capacity, he understands firsthand how critical a company’s culture is to achieving and maintaining success.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Marc Reifenrath discuss:

  • Networking is worth your time
  • Confidence could be the difference
  • Finding competitive team players
  • Creating collisions in the online workplace

Key Takeaways:

  • Networking events are worth your time. Getting the support of many different people that have different specialties is the best way to grow your business.
  • Confidence could be the difference between a sale and a rejection. People want to know that what you’re saying is going to happen as good as you’re saying if not better.
  • You want somebody who’s confident, competent, and competitive in your team but you want that person to be able to use that competitive energy to benefit the whole team and the whole organization, not just themselves.
  • In the online space, you need to be intentional in creating collisions between people. Leaders need to be more personal, and show their sincerity by really letting somebody say how they are.

"We were saying the same things, but it was being heard differently because we’re saying it differently. That confidence, that’s what people buy a lot of the time." —  Marc Reifenrath

Mandi Graziano: Introducing Business Bedside Manner to Impact Your Business and Life27 Jul 202200:30:20

Mandi will solve your company’s sales problems, quickly. Through her one-on-one or group coaching, she has a track record for increasing sales & the speed of closing deals. She curates creative closing tactics, inspires clever ways of finding new business, teaches more effective time management & educates the best ways to listen to the voice of the customer. She is your company's fun & creative secret weapon. Her 23 years of experience in leadership roles in sales, management, business, and hospitality give her a unique edge to help your company thrive. Most importantly, Mandi uses humor, fun, and stories to motivate you or your team to make your business better.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Mandi Graziano discuss:

  • What makes a salesperson great
  • Utilizing technology to socialize
  • Having a quick response time
  • Looking into pink flags

Key Takeaways:

  • A good salesperson has passion for their product or service, knowledge of their product and service, and is a good listener.
  • Technology doesn’t have to separate us. We can use it to our advantage to connect with people in meaningful ways that we couldn’t have otherwise.
  • If you can get responses back better than your competitors, you’ll probably win. One thing that could help you have a faster response time is by making sure that you have product knowledge.
  • Don’t ignore pink flags. Acknowledge them and plan for them before they turn into a red flag. Listen to your gut feeling.

Jay Steinfeld: How to Disrupt Others Before They Disrupt You19 Jul 202200:36:07

Jay is the founder and former CEO of Blinds.com, the world’s largest online window coverings retailer, acquired by The Home Depot in 2014. Jay remained as its CEO and later joined The Home Depot Online Leadership Team. After stepping away from these roles in early 2020, he began teaching entrepreneurship at Rice University’s Jones Graduate School of Business and has increased his involvement on numerous private company boards and serves as a director of the public company, Masonite.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Jay Steinfeld discuss:

  • The counter productiveness of generosity
  • Caring for your people genuinely
  • Being serious about your culture
  • Tips for creating startup businesses

Key Takeaways:

  • A lot of people think that what you need to do to succeed in business is to spend as little as possible and give away as little as you can get away with and you’ll get more money. However, the opposite is true. If you give more, you’ll get more.
  • Not every person wants to dedicate their whole life to one company. People have dreams, aspirations, and goals of their own. When you start making people feel that you genuinely care about them, they’ll start trusting you more.
  • You have to communicate to your team that embodying the culture and values of the organization is the most important thing. Be serious about culture, and hold people to your expectations.
  • It’s better to be prepared yet humble enough to know that there is a lot that you don’t know. When experimenting, try the small and fast ideas that have any potential rather than big ideas that would take a lot of time to execute.

"It’s better to give as much as you can away because you’ll actually get people more loyal, more satisfied, and that goes with not just your customers - it’s especially true with your employees." —  Jay Steinfeld

Rick West: Tips For Aspiring Entrepreneurs12 Jul 202200:38:45

Rick West is the CEO and Co-Founder of Field Agent, a global Work-On-Demand Platform.

Before starting Field Agent, Rick worked 16 years with Procter & Gamble in various assignments in the United States, Hong Kong, and Bangkok. Since leaving P&G, he has been a start-up Entrepreneur for 19 years.

Rick has co-founded multiple start-ups, including the Northstar Partnering Group, CORE4 Research, JOYN, and most recently Field Agent. He is a mentor and speaker within the entrepreneurial community and an active board member. He is also a member of the global Endeavor Entrepreneur network. Rick is an 8 wing 7 and has a BBA in Personnel and Industrial Relations with a minor in Economics from the University of Kentucky.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Rick West discuss:

  • Creating a solution
  • From corporate to entrepreneur
  • Creative people in the corporate space
  • Testing your idea

Key Takeaways:

  • Explore different innovative ways in which you can provide a service that not many companies currently do.
  • Some mindset shifts are needed when shifting from the corporate world to the entrepreneurial world. One of the most important ones is that in the entrepreneurial world, you need somebody’s help in order to succeed.
  • Someone creative will find it hard to stay in the corporate space. If you’re one of those people that have an entrepreneurial spirit, you’ll have to decide if you are able to pursue your idea now or after you retire.
  • Before you launch your business idea, you need to test it against the opinion of complete strangers. If a complete stranger isn’t willing to buy it, then you’re selling an idea and not a solution.

"Even if you find a great problem to solve, you are only as good as you invoice and collect. If you can’t invoice and collect, you’re just working on an expensive hobby. If you can find a problem to solve and you can get a complete stranger to pay you - oh my goodness - who cares what it looks like!" —  Rick West

Richard White: Optimizing Impact through Zoom05 Jul 202200:31:32

Richard White is founder and CEO of Fathom.video, a free app that records, transcribes & highlights your calls so you can focus on the conversation instead of taking notes.

Fathom was a part of the Y-Combinator W21 batch, is one of only 50 Zoom App Launch Partners, and is one of a small handful of companies Zoom has invested in directly via their Zoom Apps Fund.

Prior to Fathom, Richard founded UserVoice, one of the leading platforms that technology companies, from startups to the Fortune 500, use for managing customer feedback and making strategic product decisions. UserVoice was notable for being the company that originally invented the Feedback tabs shown on the side of millions of websites around the world today.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Richard White discuss:

  • The difference with remote office culture
  • Sharing information asynchronously
  • How virtual meetings can be better
  • Solving the problem by taking notes

Key Takeaways:

  • People think that office culture can be translated easily into remote office culture, but the truth is that they are two different animals. What will work for one will not work as well on the other.
  • Find asynchronous ways to share information. Meetings are generally more taxing than reading an email at your own pace. Asynchronous is a lot more efficient and easier.
  • Technology will soon catch up and virtual meetings will get better than in-person meetings. Still, even now, there are a lot of advantages to virtual meetings - for example, the time saved from not having to commute and the energy saved from not having to leave for work.
  • Taking notes sometimes causes you to miss out on something else that’s interesting that you’d like to take notes on. You can record the whole meeting, but you’d have to sift through hours of footage after. Marking/timestamping parts in the meeting you’d like to get back to will help you to be more present in the meeting while at the same time, going back to those interesting stuff when the meeting is done.

"When the video is on, it’s more mentally taxing because everyone’s worrying about how they look. Turn off video - give people permission to not pay attention." —  Richard White

Tom Tonkin: The Way We Think About Change Management is Dead Wrong28 Jun 202200:38:48

Tom is an executive in Professional Services and Software Sales with over 25 years of business and technology experience. He is currently serving as Senior Principal, Change Management and Transformation, Thought Leadership, and Advisory Services.

Tom spent a significant part of his career at Oracle Corporation, 19 years to be exact. He was the Senior Director of the Sales Performance Group in Oracle’s Global Sales Academy. He has also served in various leadership roles at Oracle in both Sales and Consulting, across midsize and enterprise customers, in North America and globally.

He holds a Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership from Regent University (Virginia Beach, VA) and a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership, with honors, with a focus on Leadership and Management from Regis University (Denver, CO). Tom has also received multiple business certifications and is an award-winning researcher and author.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Tom Tonkin discuss:

  • Leveling the playing field
  • Sitting in the discomfort of the unknown
  • Trusting your convictions
  • Boldness contains fear

Key Takeaways:

  • When somebody from the lower hierarchy contradicts or speaks an idea that isn’t aligned with someone from the upper hierarchy, it tends to create a lot of discomfort. It’s essential for good leaders to hear people out and ask questions, no matter what their position is.
  • Give yourself and your team the opportunity to sit in the discomfort of brainstorming in the unknown, of figuring out something that’s beyond what they know and are comfortable with.
  • Guarantee your work. Be bold and trust your convictions no matter how you got there, whether through data or intuition.
  • Boldness always contains fear and just making the difference of being bold won’t guarantee that all your ideas will take off. Still, you’ve got to keep trying.

"Everyone will get this feeling of ‘what have I done that has lasted or has made a difference?’ Somewhere along your career, you're gonna want to point back to something. " —  Tom Tonkin

Heather Fortner: Why Finance Needs Psychology to be Successful21 Jun 202200:34:16

As CEO, Heather leans into her passion for listening – to the SignatureFD team, its clients, and the industry – to create and implement the organization’s vision and mission to impact the lives of 10,000 families.

Practicing a “coach with empathy” leadership style, Heather leverages her unique ability to harmonize people’s passions and talents to build teams and lead organizations that deliver excellent and inspiring client experiences.

Prior to joining SignatureFD in February of 2003, Heather was senior operations supervisor at a trust company, managing all portfolio and security operations. She also worked for an investment management firm in Marietta, Georgia, as a financial associate.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Heather Fortner discuss:

  • What it takes to live a Net Worthwhile life
  • Shifting your mindset about money
  • Internal baggage on financial discussions
  • Developing financial literacy while young

Key Takeaways:

  • Living a Net Worthwhile life means aligning your wealth in service to what you consider worthwhile in life.
  • Working on investing in what's worthwhile in your life starts with an internal mindshift. You have to trust the financial planning experts, because if you don’t learn to let go you’ll be stuck.
  • A lot of people carry a lot of baggage and a lot of fear around the discussion of money. This fear often causes people to become stuck. It takes some skill to have financial conversations. Letting go of those fears and baggage starts with identifying and discussing them.
  • Financial literacy should start young. We need to catch them while they are young before they are able to make any big decisions that would cost them huge consequences so that they’ll grow up as financially healthy and responsible adults.

"We are able to meet people where they’re at, help them on the journey to identifying those things that are worthwhile to them but then we also have this beautiful, technical expertise to help them align all of their wealth to the service of those things they find worthwhile. The overlap of those two things is what we call ‘Net Worthwhile’." —  Heather Fortner

Alejandra Slatapolsky: How To Scale A Business WHILE Building Long Term Relationships.14 Jun 202200:39:58

Alejandra Slatapolsky is a communications and marketing leader with over 20 years of experience in B2B financial services, fintech, and technology. She has helped dozens of companies expand their businesses and create awareness through thought leadership strategies. She has designed and implemented successful communication strategies drawing from a background in marketing, strategic event planning, journalism, public relations, digital strategies, and education.

Ms. Slatapolsky is currently the Co-Founder of Scalto, a creative consultancy focused on helping companies become truly scalable, from a branding and communications perspective.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Alejandra Slatapolsky discuss:

  • Ways on how you could find your passion
  • How important personal branding is for interviewees
  • Finding your audience in the right place
  • The difference between connections and relationship

Key Takeaways:

  • Figure out your message, your passion, or your “why”. A good way to find it is to ask yourself what makes you tick or what makes you angry.
  • Your personal branding as an interviewee is important. A resume is in essence a document of showing who you are, what you got, and how you want to be perceived. Present yourself and present your passion.
  • Reaching out to your ideal audience is a matter of finding the right forum or the right place to share your brand and your message. Each forum has a specific subculture that you have to explore in order to communicate effectively.
  • There’s a big difference between connection and relationship. Technology has made creating connections a lot easier but it isn’t a good substitute for solid, real-world relationships.

Elena Paweta: Be A Better Presenter By Following Ted-Talk Tips07 Jun 202200:35:13

Dr. Elena Paweta is an executive communication coach, speaker, TEDx organizer, and university professor. She conducts courses, trainings, and workshops on effective communication and business presentations internationally. Dr. Elena is a TEDx speaker and has played a big role in organizing TEDx and TEDxWomen conferences in Poland for the last 8 years. She is also a marathon runner and mother of 2 daughters. Her clients are among others: KPMG, PwC, Bosch, Deloitte, Bridgestone, GE Healthcare, Nestle, Santander Bank, Goldman Sachs, and AstraZeneca.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Elena Paweta discuss:

  • Two types of confidence
  • Reducing self-consciousness
  • Creating a balance in your story
  • Being aware of your patterns

Key Takeaways:

  • The outer confidence is much easier to work on, practice good posture, gestures, eye contact, and voice projection. Inner confidence is more about your mindset but building outer confidence can contribute to building your inner confidence.
  • Focus on the value that the audience could get from your message and how it could change their life. Doing this will help you keep the focus out from yourself, it will make you feel less self-conscious.
  • Create a balance of inspiration and information in your speech. Make sure to always include facts in your message, along with your personal story.
  • If you want to improve as a speaker you have to be aware of the patterns you do that hinder you from being the most effective speaker you can be.
  • Ask somebody you trust to point out your blind spots and contemplate on their feedback.

"We need to not only show how confident we are but we also have to feel this confidence." —  Elena Paweta

Dr. Rajesh Kumar: Doing Business Globally: How To Develop Cross-Cultural Skills As A Leader31 May 202200:35:01

Dr. Kumar is a consultant and a retired business academic specializing in global business. He has an undergraduate and a Master’s Degree in Economics from the University of Delhi, an MBA from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in International Business from the Stern School of Business at New York University. He is also a Certified Global Dexterity Trainer.

Originally from India, Dr. Kumar has lived and worked in the United States, France, Finland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Denmark, and the United Kingdom. He has taught at Penn State, Ohio State, Babson College, and Menlo College in the United States, the University of Nottingham in the U.K., and the University of Aarhus in Denmark, among others.

Dr. Kumar specializes in the art of doing business across cultural boundaries. As companies go global they must deal with suppliers, customers, and even employees coming from different cultural backgrounds. This impacts all facets of business operations ranging from how you negotiate business deals to how you motivate employees and manage them.

Dr. Kumar has led training programs for global companies on Doing Business in India, Negotiating Cross-Culturally, and Managing Strategic Partnerships. Global Strategic Advisory, of which Dr. Kumar is the principal, offers training programs to companies seeking to enhance their global presence. Dr. Kumar is also part of the Partner-Alliances Collective, a group of professionals involved in managing alliances.

Dr. Kumar has a passion for reading, spirituality, and wine tasting. His global experience adds to his vast knowledge, in which he has many fascinating stories to tell.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Dr. Rajesh Kumar discuss:

  • How your culture defines you
  • Immersing yourself in a culture
  • Giving value to both the process and the result
  • The limits of social media interaction

Key Takeaways:

  • Culture sets you out, it defines who you are - it creates that demarcation between you and the other.
  • Simply traveling or passing by isn’t enough to understand a culture, you have to immerse yourself in it and internalize it.
  • Something individualistic societies can learn from eastern, collectivist cultures is giving as much value to the process as one does the result. This in turn also prioritizes the relationship more than the transaction.
  • Social media is great for creating connections and conveying information to a lot of people at the same time. However, the best way to develop relationships still lies in spending time together face to face.

"[On negotiation] Of course there’s a transaction, but it is much more than that. You really need to spend a lot of time in terms of… developing a relationship, becoming comfortable with each other." — Dr. Rajesh Kumar

He has bootstrapped companies he founded to millions ($MM) in ARR and has raised venture capital to build out teams to refine product features and user experiences, and to execute go-to-market (GTM) strategies.

Today, his company works with amazing entrepreneurs that are looking to make a major impact within their industry. SaaS Partners helps clients with everything from business ideation to product/service development to building scalable marketing strategies and everything in between.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Patrick Parker discuss:

  • Allowing your people to fail
  • Being clear and being accountable
  • How to be consumer-centric
  • Building a personal brand

Key Takeaways:

  • Encourage people to fail. Give people the opportunity to experiment and try new things. Give them room to fail because through that failure they'll be able to create fresh ideas and learn new things.
  • Communicate the company’s values clearly and hold yourself to those standards and values. Then, hold your staff accountable to those values as well. Be clear and be the example.
  • For a business to be successful, you have to have a clearly-defined customer profile. You have to go deep on the pain points they’re having.
  • If you want to build a personal brand, the key is in your visibility and consistency. You have to put yourself out there, make yourself discoverable, find out how people find you, and invest in that. You also have to cut out content consistently.

"Without accountability, everything falls apart. Without visibility and without clearly communicating and articulating what those values are, might as well not have them." — Patrick Parker

Andrea Edwards: Having the Courage to Trust your Intuition17 May 202200:34:35

Andrea T. Edwards, CSP, The Digital Conversationalist, is a globally award-winning B2B communications professional, who works with the world’s largest companies on the transformation needed to maximize business growth in our digital future. A change agent, provocateur, author, passionate communicator, and social leader. Andrea is all about helping businesses understand how they can empower employees to delight customers, grow personal career opportunities, and build brand success.

Andrea’s book – Uncommon Courage – is a deeper reflection on life, plus an invitation to courage, so we can tackle the biggest issues the world is facing, together. Her first book ‘18 Steps to an All-Star LinkedIn Profile’ is on two Book Authority listings as the ‘100 Best LinkedIn Books of All Time’ and ‘22 Best New LinkedIn eBooks To Read In 2021 and 2022.’

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Andrea Edwards discuss:

  • Trusting your intuition
  • What happens when we ignore intuition
  • Focusing on the solution
  • Hearing your own voice again

Key Takeaways:

  • It’s important to pay attention to your intuition and to trust it. There is a sweet spot where intuition and data meet, but that opportunity doesn’t always present itself.
  • Ignoring intuition is ignoring a level of intelligence that’s needed in this world. Intuition is a sensory faculty that sees, hears, and understands data that isn’t easily uncovered by ordinary means.
  • We live in a world that’s saturated with many different kinds of fears. We should be able to listen to that fear but instead of feeling doomed, focus on how we could change what we need to in order to make things better.
  • Find silence in your life. Turn off everything, and put the noise of the world out of your head so that you’ll be able to hear your own voice again. This is where intuition starts and this is how you’ll be able to cultivate it.

Nick Morgan: Being Heard in a Virtual World10 May 202200:36:42

About Dr. Nick Morgan: He is one of America’s top communication theorists and coaches. He is a passionate teacher committed to helping people find clarity in their thinking and ideas and then delivering them with panache.  Fortune 50 companies have commissioned him to write for many CEOs and presidents.  He has coached people to give Congressional testimony, appear on the Today Show, and deliver unforgettable TED talks.  He has worked widely with political and educational leaders.  And he has himself spoken, led conferences, and moderated panels at venues around the world.  His latest book, on virtual communication, is Can You Hear Me? published by Harvard in 2018.

Nick’s methods, which are well-known for challenging conventional thinking, have been published worldwide.  His acclaimed book on public speaking, Working the Room:  How to Move People to Action through audience-centered Speaking, was published by Harvard in 2003 and reprinted in paperback in 2005 as Give Your Speech, Change the World:  How to Move Your Audience to Action.  His book on authentic communications, Trust Me, was published by Jossey-Bass in January 2009.   His book on brain science and communication, Power Cues, was published by Harvard in 2014.

Nick served as editor of the Harvard Management Communication Letter from 1998 – 2003.  In addition, he has written hundreds of articles for local and national publications.  Nick is a former Fellow at the Center for Public Leadership at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.    After earning his PhD. in literature and rhetoric, Nick spent several years teaching Shakespeare and Public Speaking at the University of Virginia, Lehigh University, and Princeton University.  He first started writing speeches for Virginia Governor Charles S. Robb and found his own communications consulting organization, Public Words, in 1997.    Nick attributes his success to his honest and direct approach that challenges even the most confident orators to rethink how they communicate.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Nick Morgan discuss:

  • Blindspots in communication
  • Some tips on dealing with nerves
  • Overcoming limitations in virtual communications
  • Delegating tasks during a meeting

Key Takeaways:

  • Our fear response when communicating is a primordial instinct that is not relevant in our current day anymore. The tribe will not leave you to die to apex predators if you say something the wrong way anymore.
  • Redefine nervousness into a feeling of fun, thrill, or excitement - like lining up for a rollercoaster ride.
  • Virtual communications mess with our senses, and that affects our ability to communicate well and understand others. To combat this, play with the space a bit, use more hand gestures and try not to look at the screen that shows your face.
  • Delegate an MC to keep track of and encourage audience participation in the meeting. It has to be someone other than the speaker, and it would be too much to handle for one person.

"All virtual relationships degrade over time; you need to have face-to-face meetings with business folks you have long-term relationships with." —  Nick Morgan.

Dean Newlund: Why Companies Don’t Learn From Failure.03 May 202200:17:27

Dean Newlund is the founder and CEO of Mission Facilitators International, a boutique training and development firm based out of Phoenix, Arizona, with the sole purpose of helping organizations become more connected to their purpose and their people.

Today, Mission Facilitators is a respected company, having worked with scores of Fortune 500 companies, nonprofits, educational institutions, and family-owned companies nationally and in 19 countries. Grounded in age-old wisdom, modern-day learning models, neuroscience, business acumen, and organizational development, their approach has helped companies increase sales, and engagement, create high-performing teams, and cultivate leaders.

He has trained and facilitated teams in China, the UK, South America, the Middle East, India, Eastern Europe, and Indonesia. For years he had a weekly column on leadership at the Arizona Republic Newspaper. He’s authored dozens of articles and white papers and has presented on the TEDx stage in Bend, Oregon, in 2019. And he also has a popular podcast called The Business of Intuition.

Dean is grounded in these beliefs: that when we understand our purpose, acknowledge our truth, honor our intuition and forge real connections with others, we all have the power to transform our lives and the workplace. As each person cultivates new mindsets and new skills, the fabric of our society is gradually repaired.

In this episode, Dean Newlund discussed the three challenges in:

  • Creating a roadmap
  • Focusing on the purpose
  • Effective communication

Key Takeaways:

  • We miss opportunities and risks by developing only part of the business instead of seeing it as an interdependent whole. Employees don’t see how they add value to the organization. Lastly, we tend to address the symptom and not the root cause.
  • We need a roadmap that aligns the individual to the team, from the team to the end-user, to the customer. If we have that spine, that connectivity, we now know that our work is valued by others and we see the benefit of our efforts to something greater than ourselves. We also can start to uncover where the symptoms are and find the root source.
  • We need to focus on the individual, team, organizational purpose, and service. We need to be doing quality metrics, and cutting costs, we need to also keep closely connected to the reason why we’re here in the first place. What is our purpose? What is the product of our product? Why are we doing what we’re doing?
  • We need to be able to say what we know in a way that we can hear it and we need an upstream tool that can help us answer fundamental questions that are vital for all the major aspects of the employee, leadership, team, and organizational development.
  • Find Dean’s diagram for organizational value alignment here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1srP1Pm5BiKklHRfYwNctpUcVRenA0D4Y/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=116511858661867461136&rtpof=true&sd=true

Andrew Bartlow: How To “Be More Strategic”26 Apr 202200:43:03

Andrew Bartlow has 25 years of Human Resources and Talent Management experience at organizations across a wide spectrum of sizes, maturity stages, and industries.

He is the co-author of “Scaling for Success: People Priorities for High Growth Organizations,” has a master’s degree from the top program in his field, and has been CECP, SPHR, Six Sigma, and executive coaching certified.

Andrew leads Series B Consulting, which helps businesses to articulate their people strategy and accelerate their growth while navigating rapid change. He also founded the People Leader Accelerator, which is the preeminent development program for startup HR leaders.

He’s worked with clients like Masterclass and many others to help them overcome obstacles in a hyper-growth phase. For the first time ever, he wants to share his lessons on podcasts.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Andrew Bartlow discuss:

  • The age of opportunity for Human Resources
  • Hiring people in the current environment
  • Shifting your mindset
  • The roles of an HR professional

Key Takeaways:

  • This is an age of opportunity. Business leaders are demanding an answer from human resources, and this is HR’s opportunity to figure it out and create and deploy workable solutions for the organization.
  • Start with the basics, and have a plan. Determine why somebody would want to work for you and why somebody who already does would want to stay, then, tell that story. Expand your pool as much as you can.
  • The way that HR approaches the work will largely drive how they are perceived by the executive team. How they see themselves affects how the organization will see them. It changes the role when the mindset shifts and the HR aspires to be an executive.
  • The HR can be more than just the organization’s mascot, they can be the person who lets the CEO know how they are received or are affecting the company or an internal management consultant that gives sound advice and provides solutions to organizational challenges.

"Figure out why you’re differentiated - why would somebody come work for you, why would somebody stay. And then tell the story. That’s powerful. Then, you can start fishing - if you have a clear, logical, story to tell." — Andrew Bartlow

Dr. Nilda Perez: Creating a Space for Innovation19 Apr 202200:31:31

Dr. Nilda Perez helps behavioral health organizations to optimize operations and innovate their organization. She positions an organization with high-performing strategies and leading-edge practices.

She has about three decades in behavioral healthcare, as a Clinical Social Worker and in various leadership roles. She also has a Doctorate in Strategic Leadership with a concentration in Strategic Foresight – essential for forecasting and helping you design your desired future.

Dr. Nilda's expertise in operations, optimization, and high performance in behavioral healthcare qualifies her to help organizations. Then she merged that expertise with her knowledge in innovation strategies – the perfect blend for organizational success.

Dr. Nilda had been working with businesses positioning them for innovative success. Yet, she always kept her private practice knowing that this is her calling and her passion. Since the pandemic she has decided to merge both her skills and is helping organizations by infusing innovation into behavioral healthcare. She does this by creating cutting-edge operations and preparing for any upcoming crisis so that organizations can stand apart from the competition in the behavioral healthcare space.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Dr. Nilda Perez discuss:

  • Focusing on what you can control
  • Innovation and creativity
  • Taking care of the caretakers
  • Creating a better system

Key Takeaways:

  • People who focused on the circle that they could control, rather than those that they can’t, tended to do better than most in the pandemic.
  • Innovation and creativity are good tools to combat fear and anxiety.
  • We need to take care of the caretakers. By giving them extra time to heal and rest, we can reduce the amount of burnout that caretakers are experiencing.
  • Creativity makes the world more interesting and colorful. Innovation and creativity are the way towards progress, it is through these tools that we can create better systems.

Gina McAndrew: The Power of Intuition Through Gratitude12 Apr 202200:34:51

Gina McAndrew, CHA, is President and Owner of a training and consulting business and is recognized as a leading resource for employee training and development. She specializes in management, leadership, experiential, and customer service training. Her twenty-five-year-old business has been built on more than thirty years of experience.

She has an unmatched ability to simplify the learning process into easy-to-understand language and concepts which helps to make employee skill enhancement a fun, as well as an enlightening experience. Gina has consistently demonstrated the ability to “walk the talk”.

Through her programs, presentations, products, and book, Gina empowers self-motivation in her clients so they can become their best selves.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Gina McAndrew discuss:

  • Taking the opportunity to pause and think
  • Useful tools and resources for remaining grateful
  • How gratitude helps you survive sadness
  • Expressing gratitude in the workplace

Key Takeaways:

  • The pandemic gave us a lot of bad stuff, but it also allowed us the opportunity to pause and think. The only way to survive and thrive at this current time is to live and breathe gratefulness.
  • EFT or Emotional Freedom Technique is a good tool to use for healing a habit of fear. It involves tapping into specific points in your body to balance your body’s flow of energy.
  • Living gratefully doesn’t mean blinding yourself to the awful realities that exist, it’s about seeing the positive. Don’t deny sadness, acknowledge it and use gratefulness as a tool to survive that sadness.
  • People want to feel like their company or organization cares about them and values them. The best way to do this is to practice consistent expressions of gratitude. Thank your people for coming to work.

"You have to be intuitively connected to be grateful for things. You have to live it in every breath. Live in the moment of being grateful." — Gina McAndrew

Alec Hanson: From Local To Digital And Back Again05 Apr 202200:36:27

Alec Hanson is a contemporary leader within the Mortgage Industry.

Constantly striving to improve, he began his career in origination in 2004 funding over $85M, and was named Rookie of the Year by Scotsman’s Guide.

Every subsequent year Hanson landed on Scotsman’s Top 200 Originator list finishing his best year at $185M.

From there Hanson began coaching and growing a successful branch network in Orange County with his peak year in 2010 funding over $1B at the branch level.

Hanson has received HouseWire’s Rising Star award both in 2017 and 2019 and currently serves as Senior Vice President of Production for loanDepot for the Pacific Southwest Division overseeing approximately $7B in annual production.

A dynamic coach and thought leader Hanson believes in leading and coaching within the trenches of the business, loves leading originators across the country, and is the author of loanDepot’s Modern Lending Playbook.

A strategic and tactical tool designed to equip, train, and evolve the traditional mortgage professionals skill sets into the modern era.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Alec Hanson discuss:

  • The transition to the digital city
  • Present digitally and physically
  • The ICE of social media marketing
  • Being a decent and authentic person

Key Takeaways:

  • The workplace has been less about geography lately. People are moving into the digital space and in it, location stops being a limit. You can be anywhere and still maintain business relationships.
  • Digital interaction doesn’t replace the physical no matter how new the tech is, but it’s necessary that there is some kind of interaction. If you are neither digital nor physical, then that means you’re not there at all. Better yet, be present both physically and digitally.
  • Identify, connect, and engage. Identify which community you’d like to be associated with and make sure you’re connected to them. Don’t send your content into the void, find your audience and engage with them.
  • When posting on the internet, don’t forget to be a decent and authentic human being. Show your product or business in the best light but also talk about yourself - what do you value, what made you want to work in your industry.

"...Leveraging video, community technology, social - but I don’t think it necessarily replaces the physical, it just augments the experience. But if you don’t do that at all, then you’re not physical or digital, that’s a huge problem for culture." — Alec Hanson

Jen Hope: The Intersection Of Fitness And Executive Coaching29 Mar 202200:29:05

Jen Hope is a certified DISC workshop facilitator and Leadership Circle, practitioner. With a background as the Vice President of Marketing for multiple high-growth startup companies, Jen uses evidence-based techniques and strategies to help you live into the future you truly desire.

Jen trains and coaches leaders and leadership teams, arming them with the skills they need to develop, grow personally and professionally, and retain their top-tier talent.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Jen Hope discuss:

  • What the pandemic taught us
  • Making movement a part of life
  • Building internal emotional resources
  • Slowing down to listen

Key Takeaways:

  • The pandemic taught us that each one of us is human, even leaders. Moving forward right now means seeking new solutions instead of looking for a reference point in the past.
  • Normalize movement in the workplace. Make it a part of people’s daily life that everyone doesn’t have to sit still on their chairs for their whole shift but each one is driven to move around from the start of our body.
  • Think of self-care as building internal emotional resources. It’s not a luxury, it’s an essential - both for leaders and the people they serve.
  • Slow down and pause to listen. We can’t hear our intuition if we’re running in every direction, going from one thing to the next.

"What I really wanna be mindful of when working with my clients is getting folks other skills… Generative versus reactive approach - drive and ambition, these are gifts. However, if we rely on them as the only two tools that we ever pick up, we’re going to hit places where this feels depleting versus generative." — Jen Hope

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Catherine Mattiske discuss:

  • Learning agility versus job performance
  • Learning agility as the center
  • Making communications more effective
  • What it takes to learn

Key Takeaways:

  • When it comes to potential, learning agility is more important than job performance. With that, learning agility is a good indicator of job performance.
  • Results agility, people’s ability to change, mental agility, intuition, and self-awareness - at the center of all that is learning agility.
  • It’s important to be aware of how you’re communicating with people. It’s possible to intentionally structure your communication in a way where you’re reaching out effectively in a balanced way that touches all archetypes.
  • Learning isn’t that fun. It’s hard work. It takes a lot of intention, a lot of effort, and time - especially if what you’re trying to learn is how to learn. However, learning is very worth it.

"We all have within us, that zone where we are high performing. If you can get into that expert zone, that’s where you can unlock your ability to learn and you can then increase as a result of learning agility." — Catherine Mattiske

Parham Albadvi: Exploring The Intersection Between Purpose and Profit15 Mar 202200:39:00

Parham Albadvi is a trailblazing copywriter and business strategist for conscious businesses. He is the founder of Mocho and Co, a creative and consulting studio serving exclusively conscious businesses and disruptors. Together with his partner, he helps bold business leaders bring new ideas to market and build value through values.

After a stint working for various innovative SAAS companies like Eventbrite, Vidyard, and Aura, he took the plunge to work as a freelance copywriter and business strategist (while traveling the world!). He’s committed to helping businesses of all sizes realize Fred Kofman’s vision of businesses “conscious of inner and outer worlds… taking into account body, mind and spirit in self, culture, and nature.”

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Parham Albadvi discuss:

  • Finding inauthenticity in today’s brands
  • Why brands should stay specialized
  • Creating what people didn’t think they need
  • What is your brand?

Key Takeaways:

  • People either know when a company or a person is not being authentic, or they find out eventually.
  • Brands should stay specialized and focus on what they do best. Don’t be all things to all people.
  • Innovation is all about recognizing the need behind the desire, it’s creating a product or service that people may or may not know they need.
  • A brand is what your audience says you are, not merely what you say you are.

"The number one factor that’s really contributing to the importance of authenticity and branding is due to the fact that the next generation of buyers are becoming more and more value-driven." — Parham Albadvi

Michael Schill: Going Beyond the Pandemic08 Mar 202200:24:58

Michael Schill is a 21st-century entrepreneur who has managed to marry skill sets in business, music, fashion, and professional sports into a one-stop tour de force brand name. Under the tutelage of New York Times Bestselling author and Real Estate mogul Grant Cardone, Michael has earned an Ivy League level of schooling in the Public Relations game from a ground zero perspective. Leveraging his credibility in a multitude of verticals, Michael has been able to demonstrate sustained production and mastery of SAAS sales over a host of platforms using BI Visualization & Data Analysis all while spearheading the nation's premier Sales Team.

Working hand in hand with C-Level Executives and Stakeholders Michael has a proven track record of implementing and executing big-business initiatives that have been able to drive consistent growth in revenue over a large sample size.

Michael Schill is also an Executive Producer & Stakeholder of ‘The Crib Radio Show’ on DASH Radio, an Internet radio platform that reaches over 10 million people monthly. The show, ‘The Crib’, is a vehicle Michael uses to shed light on the Hip Hop/Urban scene by introducing musical acts, social influencers, and industry shakers.

Michael holds a BA in Exercise Science from Florida State University where he had the privilege of playing for their perennial national championship level football program.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Michael Schill discuss:

  • Giving a common goal to your people
  • The success of the company and of the individual
  • Treating members like customers
  • Reaching your success

Key Takeaways:

  • For people to stay, stick together, and move forward united, they must be given a common goal or a common purpose.
  • People don’t come into work to accomplish their bosses’ goals, but to accomplish their own. The challenge then for employers is figuring out how they can tie in the overall success of the organization with the success of the individual.
  • You can’t motivate your people, you need to inspire them to be motivated. In the same way that you strive to meet the needs and desires of your customers, you must also treat your own members the same way.
  • Success is relative to who you are as an individual. Being able to fulfill promises that you’ve made to yourself can already be considered a huge success.

"We all know that it’s not businesses that grow people, it’s people that grow businesses." —  Michael Schill

Steve Fretzin: Developing Relationships And Business In The Era Of Covid01 Mar 202200:35:47

Driven, focused, and passionate about helping attorneys reach their full potential, Steve Fretzin is regarded as the premier coach, skills trainer, and keynote speaker on business development for attorneys.

Over the past 17 years, Steve Fretzin has devoted his career to helping lawyers master the art of business development to achieve their business goals and the peace of mind that comes with developing a successful law practice.

In addition to writing three books on legal marketing and business development, Steve has a highly-rated podcast BE THAT LAWYER and has been featured in the Chicago Tribune, Crain’s, and Entrepreneur.com. He has appeared on NBC News, WGN Radio and has written articles for Attorney at Law Magazine, the National Law Review, the American Bar Association, and the Illinois State Bar Association. You can also find his monthly column in the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Steve Fretzin discuss:

  • Making every day count.
  • Sales-free selling.
  • The best experience for buyers.
  • Developing relationships takes intention.

Key Takeaways:

  • Sometimes, being aware that life is truly fragile and short is what we need to realize how we could live our best life. Don’t wait for a crisis, make every day count starting today.
  • If you’re analytical and a natural problem solver, you might be inclined to solve without listening first. However, the best way to get sales is to listen and make the client feel like they’re being understood and see if your solution would be a fit.
  • The best experience for a buyer is for them to not be sold anything, but for them to buy what they want and what is a fit for what they need.
  • If you want to have interesting points of discussion, a good and simple idea is to research that person and ask questions about the things they put out there.

"Lawyers love to solve problems, fix things, get creative over language - that’s all fine and dandy… the problem is what they’re doing is giving free consulting, what they’re not doing is… ask questions, listen, let them feel understood." — Steve Fretzin

Damion Taylor: Using Data In The Creative Process22 Feb 202200:34:53

Damion has spent the last 15 years applying data and technology to entertainment. Both analytical and creative, he brings a unique skill set to his company, Prometheus Digital Studio, that’s in high demand for brands and media companies such as Warner Bros., NBC Universal, Machinima, Mitu, and New Form. Damion has spent his career observing and understanding the motivations that drive people's actions. After witnessing the Central Park Karen incident and murders of Ahmaud Abery and George Floyd in 2020, he decided to use his company and skills to make a positive impact on the world and created the Professional Confession podcast.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Damion Taylor discuss:

  • Promoting before completing the project
  • Honing your product with your audience
  • Keeping a pulse on who follows you
  • Three things to determine about your company

Key Takeaways:

  • Promote first, even before completing the project, so that you’ll see how big you’re initial core audience is and how excited they are about it. Build conversations around the incoming project.
  • If you promote the project first, you’ll be able to understand the expectations of your audience and you’ll be able to integrate those into the project to hone it into something that your audience wants.
  • Keep a pulse on the type or demographics of the people that follow you. When a new group comes in, you need to understand how you attracted them, see if they fit in your company’s mission, and decide how you’ll address the new group.
  • Determine what your core message is, what makes your product unique, and what will make your audience want to keep coming back. Contemplate on those three things consistently and deliver.

"Bring people along for the ride… It’s kind of building your thousand core fans, allowing you to hone your product to what your people really want." — Damion Taylor
