That question has been answered, scripted, refined, rehearsed and repeated by tens of millions people in the last century. The answer seems to evolve as careers change, marital status changes, political seasons change, and the library of business cards with the same name tries to keep up with the resume and LinkedIn profile. 

Just be careful to not allow the story creep to impact at the deeper level when not welcome. The story creep will throw out ancient comfort zone stories and corrupt current endeavors. The story creep will also confuse and corrupt - reducing your human-beingness to merely human-doingness.

One of the saddest things I see in society is the number of people suffering from their own comfort. Gary Brecka says “Aging is the relentless pursuit of comfort.” I coach leaders, trainers, speakers and many other coaches who are baffled by this human phenomena.

It is truly painful to see someone so close to a breakthrough who just won’t take the next step. As a coach or mentor, I can only take you so far.

If you are desperate for transformation there is a price to pay to get to the next level. At some point the pain of staying the same must become a price you’re unwilling to pay. Sadly, that price usually comes as a bill of negative consequence.

WEEDS GROW STRONGER WHILE THE GRASS IS DORMANT. HOW DO YOU APPLY THIS METAPHOR TO THE PANDEMIC? Every fall the beautifully manicured lawns of St Augustine grass begin the process of “shutting down for winter.” The grass goes dormant, turns brown, stalls its growth and spreading process in wait for the spring. Meanwhile, all the weeds in the universe seem to migrate to the well watered, healthy soil of the lawn. Surely, weeds can and will grow anywhere!! They grow in the cracks in the sidewalk, the arid desserts, the middle of the road given half a chance. As you apply this truth to the metaphorical areas of your life, ask yourself questions like this: “Did anyone teach me to lie and deceive my parents when I was a toddler?” “Do I have to pursue distractions and random useless thoughts, or do they simply appear against my will?” “Are all of my activities and efforts focused with intention on the goals and dreams I have decided on?” “Do I allow boredom to conquer my desire to live a healthy life?” “Do I cultivate, nourish, irrigate, defend and guard my thoughts and activities like I would a lush but delicate lawn?” “Do I allow ‘weed like’ notions, activities and distractions to rule my time, talent, treasure and attention?” While the world of business activity is dormant due to this global pandemic, don’t allow the weeds to take over. Business will resume. Work will be available. Relationships will be reignited. However, JUST LIKE THE DORMANT LAWN they will all be suffering from an infestation of weeds! Don’t allow the presence of weeds to starve everything you have worked for up to now. Don’t set the grass afire to destroy the weeds. Be prepared to pull the weeds by hand if you must. Get a firm grip and pull them up by the roots!! #STORYPOWER AND PAPER TIGERS: - WHY WOULD A STORY TELLER INVOLVE PAPER TIGERS? - WHAT IS THE BENEFIT OF A PAPER TIGER? - CAN YOU GIVE ME AN ILLUSTRATION OF HOW A COMMUNICATOR MIGHT USE A PAPER TIGER? (Listen to the audio) Paper tigers are tools for rhetoric, tools for persuasion, tools for control. A good leader or communicator will have more effective, IMHO more ethical tools. A weak or intentionally misleading communicator or leader relies on the use of paper tigers to “puff up” the veracity and validity of their argument. Action they want or need you to take, behavior they need you to conform to, ideas they need to you carry forward, movements they need you to buy into, all of these are reinforced with a solidly constructed paper tiger. Like any other ruse, camouflage, misdirection or boogeyman, the more convincing the threat, the greater the harm, the bigger the lie, the more likely the masses will believe it and buy in. It is a strange psychological phenomenon! That’s what makes a well constructed paper tiger so dangerous. From a distance, it looks real! The light is just right. The sounds are perfectly in tune. The expectations of the threat so well articulated, even if the tiger never moves... WE ALL JUMP with just the right nudge. THAT’S THE REAL DANGER! ——- OVER REACTION. When people are so tense with emotion that a sneeze will set them off into an anxiety attack or a panicked mob like response, those triggers are no different than yelling FIRE in a crowded theater. High strung, gullible, misled humans are a dangerous lot. (Add a touch of frequency disruption and you can turn a cluster of chai tea sipping soccer moms into a herd of raging wildebeests.) #STORYPOWER will teach about the paper tiger effect and other tools of rhetorical communication like it. WHAT IS A PAPER TIGER?! WHAT MAKES THEM SO DANGEROUS?! Watch the video #leadingleaderspodcast 4-9-20 The danger of the paper tiger is the loss of perspective, the conjured emotions, the manufactured fear, the intentional manipulation and the nefarious activity going just out of view. The real risk is the danger lurking behind the tiger. Remember the inflatable tanks used during WW2? If not, do some homework! They changed the course of a WORLD WAR!! The ability to mislead, deceive, distract and redirect is a powerful tool for pushing an agenda, waging war and furthering a campaign of any magnitude. Narcissists use paper tigers better than anyone! But governments and large, uncontrollable entities such as drug cartels, the mafia, big tobacco, big pharma and so on have used the same tactics to bend the will of the people for decades. The difference is, there is a certain level of trust embedded in the media at large which makes the tool of communication a paper tiger on its own - whether knowing co-conspirators of useful idiots, you be the judge. When politics, money, power, control and long range plans are at stake, we humans are merely pawns in the game. Be vigilant. Be observant. Ask probing questions. Get uncomfortable with the incredible efforts to make you “comfortable.” Don’t be gullible. Be informed. Don’t be fearful. Be bold. Do not trade liberty for security. When you do, you lose both. ARE YOU AWARE? AWARENESS IS THE KEY TO TRANSFORMATION! “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!!” This is a redneck philosophy which carries a ton of basic common sense. The balance against this philosophy is the idea of incremental improvement other wise known as consistent personal growth. The challenge for the “don’t fix it crowd” is the threat of never improving, growing or addressing the issues which don’t appear broke. The challenge for the”constant improvement crowd” is the threat of perpetual tweaking and the shiny object syndrome. These practices often lead to constant change but not allowing a process to play itself out and prove or disprove the success of the modification. There really are cures which are worse than the illness they address. The are paper tiger slayers who are significantly more dangers than the paper tiger!! There are certain events in your life which may choose not to recall because they are too painful. There are other memories you wish you could recall, but the details are too fuzzy or vague. There are other memories which commonly come to mind based on someone’s voice, a sound in traffic, or a specific sight. When a good storyteller uses properly placed emotive application of sights, and sounds they can invite you into a moment you haven’t considered in decades. They can also allow you to imagine a moment you have not yet experienced with such intense emotion you will have the sense it is a moment relived. ECHO CHAMBER? SOUNDING BOARD? BRAIN STORM? MASTERMIND? It’s pretty amazing how many people express loud, brash, passionate even vehement opinions which they have never really pondered to the full extent. They have never asked the simple questions like, “How did I come to that conclusion?” “Do I believe this because I have evidence or experience to verify this notion?” “Do I believe and repeat this because someone I admire or respect says it frequently?” “If this idea or opinion is valid and true, what else must also be true?” “If all those things are true, what changes are needed or are imminent in my life? If you have not taken time to ask yourself these questions, you may have strong opinions, but you don’t know why. You are at risk of living in an echo chamber. It is neither a safe place to be nor a wise place to be. You need to get a mentor, join a mastermind, brainstorm with people you disagree with, or at minimum seek out a sounding board who is bold enough and intellectual enough to challenge your ideas. Make sure any of the people pass the minimum requirements of: 1. They GENUINELY care about you and your best interest. 2. They are committed to your growth MORE than winning you over or winning an argument, CAUTION: Some people “offer themselves” in these capacities ONLY TO PROVE you wrong and how smart they are. Depending on the purpose of your conversation, the nature of your ideas, and the affinity to relationship, some of these mentors could be engaged at NO COST TO YOU . PERSPECTIVE. PERSPECTIVE CHANGES. PERSPECTIVE CHANGES EVERYTHING When we change how we look at things, the things we look at seem to change as well. Dr. Caroline Leaf calls it the Multiple Perspective Advantage. So far as we are able to understand, it is a phenomenon of human psychological make up, meaningfully no other animals are capable of this exercise. Simply put, we have the unique ability to mentally remove ourselves from a situation or circumstance to observe and consider the same event from another perspective, EVEN AS IT IS HAPPENING TO US. This distinctly human advantage is a powerful way for us to cope with trauma, with atrocities, with devastation and remain calm and analytical. This MPA is as natural as breathing. It is available to every human soul on Earth. It is also skill which can be taught, practiced and mastered by those disciplined enough to do so. Just like a high performing athlete, a Navy Seal, an Olympic Swimmer or a Tibetan Monk who learns to master their breathing for performance, health and clarity, anyone can learn to master their MPA. If you find yourself suffering with anxiety, depression, anger, frustration, defeat, a victim mindset, what you want is a NEW SET OF CIRCUMSTANCES. What you need is a NEW PERSPECTIVE! STRESS AND PRESSURE LEAD TO BAD DECISIONS. Values will offset the stress!! Decisions made under pressure are often decisions made with little evaluation of the long term consequences. Most humans will succumb to the “fight or flight” emotions, hormones and biochemicals in the brain and body. These instincts generally push us to make decisions which solve ONLY what seems to be the immediate threat or danger. First responders, pilots, athletes, professional fighters and medical professionals all train to respond in such intense situations so that their reflexive response will be based more on training than reacting in a crisis. Relationally speaking, we should all establish our own core values and practice/ rehearse/ train ourselves to respond with those value based decisions under any circumstances. WHEN FEAR AND PAIN COLLIDE THE RESULT IS A RELATIONSHIP TIME BOMB WAITING TO GO OFF... Speculations are, more people will suffer financial loss in this season of COVID19, than will suffer the loss of their health or the loss of a loved one. When we consider the ripple effect and the long term impact of income loss, job loss and opportunity loss, the fear and pain of these losses can look like repossessions, foreclosures, divorce and even homelessness. Most counselors and coaches can tell you anger is a dangerous thing to add to the mix of an already heart rending and frustrating season. They can also tell you ANGER IS THE RESULT OF FEAR MIXED WITH PAIN. ​ The fear of loss and the pain of loss can become seething anger and uncontrollable rage silently resting beneath the surface. WHAT PART OF YOUR STORY MATTERS? TO YOUR CUSTOMERS? TO YOUR TEAM? TO YOU? Only the part you tell? Only the part others tell? Only the part that makes them act? Ie: to buy, to buy in or to comply? Many people have a specific part of their story they dwell upon. They want to hide certain aspects of their story and highlight other aspects. They want to tell the part of the story which makes them seem like the the hero while withholding all the parts which reveal their flaws, their mistakes, their weaknesses - their humanity. Surely, there are parts of your story which hold no positive “marketing impact.” Their are parts of your story which would make you vulnerable to adverse actions or opinions legally, politically or socially. Their are parts of your story which bring internal shame, humiliation and frustration. So what good are they? Should you ever use them? Your story is informing you what you think about you second by second. Those stories you fight so hard to conceal from public scrutiny are informing your mood, your relationships, your attitude every single day. WHAT STORY DO YOU TELL ABOUT THOSE CLOSEST TO YOU? In everyday conversation we find reasons to talk about people who occupy our mental real estate. People who come to mind on a regular basis make an impact in who we are. Our chatting with others will reveal much about those closest to us in the same way it reveals much about us. It is through this reasoning we can learn about people and their friends and enemies most by listening. But the real questions for you to consider have more to do with how you treat your friends and loved ones when they’re not around. Is it honoring? Is it hurtful? Is it truthful? “TRUST TAKES YEARS TO ESTABLISH AND SECONDS TO DESTROY” HOW LONG DOES DISTRUST LAST? ​ From companies who have been embezzled, spouses who have been betrayed, children who have been abused to citizens who have been misled destroying trust only takes moments. Years of employment, years of marriage, years of peace, would all seem like indicators everything is OK. But the moment a lie comes to light everything changes. The first time the news breaks of corruption in a political campaign, of the misuse of funds by a school administration or the abusive tactics of law enforcement there becomes a sense of distrust. Now every choice, every decision, every announcement is questioned for cause, intent, suspicious outcomes and the questions linger. It’s not like the scenes change allows each decision to stand alone either, it happens that each choice is measured now against the known violation of trust and considered only through that lense. How then do we rebuild that trust? What measures need to be taken to demonstrate trust worthiness? How do we learn to trust again? These questions are the subject of many books and Ted Talks so I will encourage you to invest some time in researching them if you find yourself on the outside of the proverbial circle of trust or the trust tree. I do want to caution as a leader of any level, trust is a currency you cannot afford to squander. It is harder to amass than bitcoin and easier to lose than bets on a roulette wheel. Guard your trust!! Integrity is a hard thing to regain!! DO YOU PROJECT YOUR LIMITING BELIEFS ON THE PEOPLE YOU LEAD? We all have beliefs systems. All of us. Every human being has a belief system or perhaps more than one. We have developed them through the course of our life and either proven them to be “true based on experience” or at least repeated them so often we believe them to be true even if we have never actually experienced them. Most of these beliefs were formed in us by observation of the environment we grew up in. Most of these beliefs - wrong or right - were cemented in our memories and inner judgments before age 10. Most of these beliefs drive our behavior well into adulthood impacting relationships, career and education. Most of these beliefs will impact the way we lead, who we choose as friends, who we choose as business associates and who we trust. Most of these beliefs are based on a decision we made when we were so young we could not possibly have had all the facts. Most of these beliefs are expressed in the conversations we have with friends and strangers. Most of these beliefs create the stories we tell. WORD CHOICE IS A POWERFUL PROGRAMMING TOOL FOR STORY TELLERS AND WORLD LEADERS. From racial slurs to politically motivated character assassinations, some words have been given meaning for the sole purpose of manipulation. I once had a man ask “What right do you have to criminalize an article of clothing?” Alone, the question is an interesting choice of words. The idea on the other hand would conjure some odd imagery. Think fast. What clothing have you known to be outlawed or criminalized? While your imagination is churning on things like the swastika, the hooded sheets of the kkk, the nearly nothing of some beach goers - does the hooded sweatshirt come to mind? How about the sleeveless undershirt unaffectionately known as a “wife beater”? When society allows hitherto unknown meanings and interpretations to be applied to words as generations change, the meaning of history is rewritten as well. Another more blatant example is the use of words like “holocaust”, “concentration camp” and “death camp”. All of these have a definitive historical meaning. The use of these terms for political persuasion is not only journalistic malpractice, intellectual dishonesty and potential hate speech it is the worst form of manipulation backed by a wicked intent to rewrite or reframe history. Gender fluidity? Poly amorous? Right wing hate groups? Muslim Terrorist? Islamaphobia? These phrases did not exist one generation ago. But they have been etched in the minds of young people with specific meaning and attached significant emotion through repeated uses in the media. These words now carry a specific vibrational resonance. They are an energized frequency which impacts hearts and minds whenever they are spoken. #StoryPower Master Class specifically and intentionally teaches story crafting exercises which examine word choice from the perspective of responsibility as a communicator not merely the effect resulting in desired persuasion. TWO MYTHS ABOUT STORY TELLING FOR EVERYDAY PEOPLE. There are millions of people who talk about the power of story telling to “close the deal”, as an elevator pitch, or even as a primary form of teaching. There are also millions who see their own life’s story as a premise for a book, movie or screen play. While there is great validity in using story telling as an art form or even as a primary means of communication I believe there are at least two myths about story telling which most people ignore at their peril. By peril I mean, they may spend hours or even years crafting a story to deliver from stage or other means only to face the first of these two myths and realize their time has been in vain. Or they may tell their story in such a way as to “reveal all,” expose certain wrongs, gain an upper hand and run headlong into the second of these two myths. StoryPower intentionally teaches story selection and story crafting as a very targeted form of communication. This process focuses on who is hearing and receiving the story and the long term impact such stories may have on them. Well selected, well crafted, well told stories can be life changing. BABIES AND LEADERS SHARE THE SAME FEAR!! AT SOME POINT THEY MIGHT SHARE A GREATER DANGER THAN WHAT THEY FEAR! ​ Babies have a fear of falling. It’s why they gasp for breath when a parent is Holding them and moves too suddenly. The fear of falling they say is the only natural born fear in human beings. Leaders also have a healthy fear of falling. They fear losing their status, their influence, their position, career or title. It makes sense. No one wants to work so hard for so long and see it all slip away. HOWEVER - The one danger babies and leaders both must face is the hubris which masks the fear of falling! When a toddler loses that sense of fear they take unlikely risks. When they carry that fearlessness forward into adolescence or young adulthood they do crazy things like street racing, challenging peers to life threatening tasks and they truly believe “IT WON’T HAPPEN TO ME!” When leaders approach their leadership role with the same level of hubris possessed by teen boys or young men, the same danger arises. They become convinced “IT CAN’T HAPPEN TO ME!” Toddlers in discovery mode and leaders who are proving themselves both need someone close at hand who is objective enough to see the risks clearly, recognize the potential threats and potential harm which could be done and have to trusted position to SPEAK UP! When young adventurous children do not heed the admonishment of their parents SCARS ABOUND! When young leaders with the same hubris based courage do not heed the admonishment of their advisors HEARTBREAK ABOUNDS! Along with lost opportunity, lost money, lost time and possibly lost freedom. WHAT IS A REAL MAN? It is truly sad to say but we could ask that question of 1000 different people over the last three generations and not get one solidified or unified and consistent answer. I am not sure there has been an answer to that question which pleases everyone for centuries or more. Some would say a professional athlete is the model of a “real man”. Someone who works hard and plays hard. Someone driven by on the field success and outward expressions of testosterone. Someone who is Intense, extroverted, in control and powerful. Others would say a “real man” is financially successful and who provides for his family better than the previous generation provided for him. Someone who is educated and street smart. Someone who knows the ways of the world so to speak and knows how to win at all costs. Others would say a “real man” knows how to stand his ground. Someone who knows what he believes and never backs down from it. Someone always running to the defense and aid of others at all cost even the peril of his own life. Someone tough, gruff, filled with grit and vigor. A soldier, a firefighter or a cop might fall in this category of man. So would a gang leader, a drug lord or a pimp. Some would say a “real man” is a sexy lover. A man who has women falling at his feet over his chiseled features and smooth way. Seduction is his game and he always wins. Finally, some would say a “real man” is a gentlemen. Quiet, humble, emotionally sensitive mark his nature and his demeanor. He never offends anyone. He never stirs up trouble or controversy. He is always humble and kind. Gentle as a butterfly. Now you can see why young boys are struggling to become men. NO ONE KNOWS WHAT ONE IS!! With all the talk of TOXIC MASCULINITY - it would do society well to first properly define MASCULINITY. If we don’t know what a real man is, how can we identify the counterfeit? COME ON. CHIME IN. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO DECIDE SOMETHING ISN’T WORKING AND MOVE ON? One of the marks of a solid leader is the ability to make decisions. - Rapidly - Decisively - Risk Aware RAPIDLY There was an old phrase which came up frequently when I played billiards competitively. “Think long. Think wrong.” Basically it was a reminder that at this level, you have enough insight, wisdom, experience and intuition to make a decision. It is not always the case that more data will change your decision. If you have been here before you should be confident enough to trust your gut. DECISIVELY “A double minded man is like a wave of the sea - tossed about by every other idea.” Leaders need to know that a decision is a decision. Next should follow action, commitment and results. There should be no need to re-decide, second guess or ask for further opinion after the decision is made. RISK AWARE “There is safety in numbers. There is wisdom in a multitude of counselors.” Making a big decision with large implications and ramifications should not be taken lightly. Ask for guidance, seek counsel, weigh the cost vs benefits and know the projected outcome before you decide. The longer you have been in the role you are making a decision about, the more of those deciding factors are already second nature. So count the cost, then decide and act. More opportunities slip by without a decision to act on them than are lost any other way. Sure, you may get it wrong from time to time. You may need to course correct and redouble your efforts. KINDNESS. COMPASSION. EMPATHY. Are these the make up of the new work force? Or THE BUZZ WORDS of an unachievable dream? Kindness is something we learned in kindergarten. Kindness is something we learned from Thumper’s mother in the Bambi movie. Kindness is the bedrock of most human relationships. Kindness demands selflessness, focus on others and attention to emotional needs of others. Kindness sometimes requires hard work on the part of those giving it. The work force demands focus on your job and the task at hand. The work force demands work ethic - show up early or on time, stay late, work hard, keep your nose to the grind stone. The work force demands high standards, hard expectations and severe consequences for missing them. The work force can be a dog eat dog world. How then do we propose a focus on others which will be kind, compassionate and beyond ourselves? How do we DO KINDNESS in a rough scrabble world of competition and struggle to get ahead? How do we exhibit kindness as leaders when the intensely focused and driven people seem be the greatest achievers? SELF CARE MATTERS. Do you have a mental maintenance agreement? Most people buy a warranty when they buy a new car. An after market maintenance agreement will cover repairs to save you the out of pocket costs of certain repairs. The same with expensive electronics, appliances and even jewelry. If it’s a big investment, you need to make the additional investment to make sure it is cover in order to keep it working in TOP CONDITION. Clint Fuqua offers a similar “maintenance plan” for your body/ your physical health. What do you do for your mental well being? ​ Do you have a plan? Do you have a coach, a mentor or someone to who you can vent and reflect? In a healthy marriage, that person may be your spouse. If your marriage is a “victim” of your daily stresses you need someone else. In fact, depending on your lifestyle, your profession, your underlying medical conditions you may need more than one person. In my life, I have different pastors, fellow coaches, personal mentors, and a few professional counselors. All of these people have been given authority by me to speak directly into my life to tell me when the see something or hear something which might need more attention and intentional focus. They also have the right to call me out in the way of accountability. All of them listen closely when I have concerns, fears, stressors in my life to help identify not only the symptoms of the issue but to help ferret out the cause.
