| Cat Newman, Limejump – 59 | 15 Jul 2020 | 00:45:16 | |
That the cleantech industry is so dynamic is one of its biggest appeals, and its biggest challenges. At Hyperion our goal is to help the world’s best cleantech companies find the talent to achieve their goals and ambitions, and to help founders towards their desired exit. I interviewed LImejump founder, and former CEO Erik Nygard on a previous episode, at the time Hyperion were supporting him to hire a COO. That process went well, and Cat Newman was hired into the role, so well in fact that she has recently been promoted to CEO as Erik moves on to new pastures, after their acquisition by Shell. It was great to talk to Cat about the challenges of moving from corporate to start-ups, about building structure and process for growth, about diversity and so much more. I hope you enjoy the episode.About Catherine NewmanCatherine joined Limejump in February 2020, initially to run the Commercial and Trading teams as COO. In July 2020, Catherine moved into the role of CEO with plans to drive the company’s growth towards becoming the largest transformational player in the global renewable market. Previous to Limejump, Catherine spent 11 years at Gazprom Marketing and Trading. During this time Catherine was in a variety of roles – most noteworthy being COO of Trading and Director of Global IT and Delivery – she also chaired the operating committee. Prior to this, Catherine worked at BP. Even though Catherine has worked in the energy trading space for over 20 years, her career started in bioinformatics at Pfizer – she also spent time enjoying the dotcom bubble. This initial career choice followed her BSc (Hons) in Genetics and MSc in Bioinformatics in 1998, both from the University of Manchester. After the dotcom bubble burst, Catherine moved into energy consultancy where she spent time at most of the major energy players across Europe. In her spare time Catherine enjoys family life, keeping fit, gardening and cooking. She is a mental health first aider and is a strong advocate for keeping ‘the balance’ right in life. | Juraj Ulehla, Voltia – Episode 54 | 27 May 2020 | 00:38:29
After last week’s episode we return to the ground but stay with eMobility. Last mile deliveries have never been more needed, as we’re currently so reliant on home deliveries. It’s also fair to say cities, mayors and citizens are quite liking the clean air and lack of both air and noise pollution, I can only expect the successes of Voltia and others in this space will continue. That said, when I first spoke to Juraj some time ago, it was his entrepreneurial story that stood, out. We discuss both in this episode.About Juraj UlehlaJuraj Ulehla, a former investment banker who specialized in risk management when working for international banks, is the Co-Founder and CEO of Voltia. He holds a PhD from the University of Economics Bratislava. Prior to leading Voltia, Juraj focused on solar power plant development and was instrumental in building up Voltia’s predecessor Greenway Operator (GWO), together with his co-founder and co-investor Peter Badik, who heads Voltia’s sister company Greenway Infrastructure (GWI).About VoltiaVoltia is a European e-mobility specialist based in Bratislava, Slovakia. Launched in 2015, with the mission to help make commercial e-mobility effective and affordable, it supports OEMs by broadening the usability of their mass-market electric LCV models. Voltia’s approach is to add value in terms of application-specific re-design for different purposes. It provides development know-how, vehicle structure engineering, prototyping, production set-up, and sales & marketing support. It has clients in 11 European countries. More than 500 Voltia e-vans already operate successfully in large urban environments, such as London, Paris, Nice, Dortmund, Tallinn or Bratislava.Social linksJuraj Ulehla on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jurajulehla/Voltia Website: https://www.voltia.com/Voltia on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/voltia/Voltia on Twitter: https://twitter.com/Voltia_comEPISODE LINKSEmissions free deliveries in London using the Voltia electric van https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGrQjyZ_1sMSteve Jobs: The Exclusive Biography Paperback https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B005J3IEZQ/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0Alibaba: The House That Jack Ma Built https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0124PP3AA/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0Contact via the website, or Twitter. | Val Miftakhov, ZeroAvia - Episode 53 | 13 May 2020 | 00:40:37
As you’ll know I feel a fair amount of guilt over the amount of flying I typically do. Not an issue at present, but as we discuss on this episode, despite the present situation, aviation is on a fast-upward trend, and has a huge environmental impact. So it was a pleasure to speak to Val Miftakhov to see just how close we are to electric flight, at least on a regional level. It was also interesting to hear his thoughts on hydrogen in transport generally, and why he feels aviation is the area where it can, and does, work. About Val MiftakhovVal Miftakhov is Founder & CEO of ZeroAvia, a company developing the World's first practical zero emission aviation powertrain. Val is an avid helicopter and airplane pilot, and a serial sustainable transportation entrepreneur - his previous company eMotorWerks has developed the World’s leading platform for EV battery aggregation to provide grid services, and was acquired in 2017. Prior to that, Val held a number of senior business and product positions at Google and McKinsey & Company, and was a nuclear researcher at Stanford Linear Accelerator. Val holds a Ph.D. in Physics from Princeton University, Masters in Physics from Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, and was a two-time winner of Russian Nationwide Physics competitions.About ZeroAviaZeroAvia is producing the world’s first practical zero emission aviation powertrain, initially targeting 9-19-passenger airplanes to start replacing dirty jet fuel. Our mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable aviation by giving aircraft customers and airframe manufacturers a zero- emission option that serves the most common airline trips. We do this by designing and producing hydrogen-fueled powertrains for the aviation industry. Currently, we have the largest zero emission aircraft in the world flying today using no fossil fuels.Social linksVal Miftakhov on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/vmiftakhov/ZeroAvia Website: https://www.zeroavia.com/ ZeroAvia on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/zeroavia/ZeroAvia on Twitter: https://twitter.com/ZeroAviaEPISODE LINKSA New Opportunity For Hydrogen is Aviation https://aeronauticsonline.com/a-new-opportunity-for-hydrogen-is-aviation/ZeroAvia’s Hydrogen-Fueled Powertrain for Zero-Emission Aircraft https://www.azocleantech.com/article.aspx?ArticleID=1006ZeroAvia Announces £2.7m UK Government Grant for the Development of Zero Emission Aviation https://www.intelligent-energy.com/news-and-events/company-news/2019/09/18/zeroavia-announces-27m-uk-government-grant-for-the-development-of-zero-emission-aviation/Follow us online, write a review (please) or subscribeI'm very keen to hear feedback on the podcast and my guests, and to hear your suggestions for future guests or topics. I’d been very keen to have a conversation on the podcast with Doug Campbell, CEO of Solid Power for some time, solid state batteries being another big leap in battery evolution. I hope you enjoy the conversation.About Doug CampbellDoug Campbell is the CEO and co-founder of Solid Power. He established the company as a spin-out business of the University of Colorado Boulder in 2012 and has led the company through its early development phase into its current phase of achieving the first step of production scale. He has been instrumental in establishing the company’s strategy of focusing on rapid product development with follow-on iterations toward meeting customer requirements. To this end, he has been instrumental in the company’s customer and partner outreach as evidenced by the large collection of customers and strategic investors Solid Power has assembled that includes BMW, Hyundai Motor Corporation, Samsung, Solvay and Sanoh among several others.Mr. Campbell is a startup veteran with nearly 20 years of experience in hardware-based new technology developments in the markets of energy storage, aerospace and defense. | Liam Berryman, Nelumbo – Episode 47 | 11 Mar 2020 | 00:45:18
What’s it all about? As you will hear on the podcast I was introduced to Liam Berryman via a mutual friend and previous podcast guest, Michael Hopkins. I’m so excited about some of the unseen (literally) technologies that are playing such an important role in the fight against the climate crisis. Nanotechnologies are one such area, and this is what we explore on this podcast. I hope you enjoy the episode.About Liam BerrymanLiam is CEO and Co-Founder at Nelumbo, a company making physical products resistant to the elements, higher performance, and environmentally sustainable by creatively applying nanostructured materials. As CEO, Liam has led Nelumbo from garage start-up to an emerging company solving major problems for top tier clients. Nelumbo has received greater than $17M in private funding, is developing multiple products that provide breakthrough results for customers and the climate and is forging a defining culture to enable continued excellence in materials innovation and commercialization. Liam is also a personal advisor and mentor to select CEOs building big, unique ventures. He supports areas including deep technology and climate spaces, market analysis and financial planning, fundraising, clarifying story, public speaking, strategic deal structuring, and building growth teams.Liam is a proud member of the Young President’s Organization (YPO), the Thiel Fellowship, and Forbes 30 under 30 for Energy. He has been a featured speaker at a variety of energy and climate conferences, including: Cleantech Forum, European Venture Fair, NREL Industry Growth Forum, Energy & Impact Symposium, Cleantech Open, Verge, Hive, National Investment Banking Association (NIBA), SinBerBEST, and the Cleantech University Prize.About NelumboNelumbo is democratizing the use of nanostructure to solve problems for people and the planet. When a surface is nanostructured, it can be used to create game-changing benefits like ships that never corrode, planes that don’t have problems with ice, machines that are permanently clean, air conditioners that don’t leak refrigerant, and production processes that use far less energy and resources, but this outstanding capability is not regularly used in products today. To change this, we have created the first technology that is able to apply relatively precise nanostructures to surfaces in a low cost, scalable, and environmentally sustainable manner. We focus today on products such as air conditioners / refrigerators and textiles, which represent an aggregate opportunity greater than $200 billion dollars and 500 million tons of mitigated carbon equivalent emissions per year. We are continuously expanding how our platform changes products and lives with new partnerships that push forward the adoption of nanostructure as a powerful tool to solve pain points for products and the planet. | Charlotta Holmquist, Blixt – Episode 45 | 29 Jan 2020 | 00:44:32
I first saw Charlotta pitch Blixt at Ecosummit and was subsequently introduced via my friends at BayWa Ventures. I loved her enthusiasm, and I take my hat off to anyone that has founded, exited and founded companies on many occasions. I’m sure you’ll be inspired by her story. About our guestCharlotta has been an entrepreneur for 20 years and active in several roles setting up businesses in various sectors from e-Commerce to gaming and later deep tech in transformative energy. She loves entrepreneurship for the opportunity to constantly learn and navigate through challenges and opportunities. As a seasoned serial entrepreneur Charlotta started learning about the climate crisis and strongly felt she must use her accumulated experience to try to make a difference.Blixt was founded in 2018 with the goal of bringing grid-edge data intelligence to the energy supply market through the introduction of digital circuit breaker technology.Mechanical circuit breakers have been the gatekeepers of household electricity supply for around 150 years, but our digital alternative will be a game changer for the future of electricity management. Software is appearing in all aspects of every industry today, and it just doesn’t make sense to have an analogue, mechanical device in something so central as the entry point for electricity in a home. The solid state circuit breaker is a response to emerging trends in global energy markets and aims to satisfy growing demand for “grid-edge intelligence” from both consumers and power network infrastructure. Blixt is so far the most ambitious challenge I have ever taken on. On the other hand, our innovations spark for an entirely new energy paradigm. On Women’s Day 2019 Charlotta was awarded “No 1 Female Entrepreneur of the Year Globally” by the UK rating institute Earlymetrics which was of course a great honor.About BlixtBlixt is the first and only company to develop miniature, solid state circuit breakers for the residential market. | Dr Pete Armstrong, Mixergy – Episode 44 | 22 Jan 2020 | 00:43:57
I first met Pete Armstrong as he was pitching at the Ecosummit event in Berlin in 2018 and last year. The scale of the impact possible in transforming our heating and water storage systems in our homes blew my mind. I’ve always been so involved in the ‘electrification of everything’, so I’ve watched since with interest. Mixergy were also mentioned in a recent podcast episode with Robert Trezona of IP Group, one of their early (and follow on) investors. So I thought I’d invite Dr Pete Armstrong to join us.About our guestDr Pete Armstrong is CEO and co-founder of Mixergy, an Oxford University spin-out company which has brought to market a unique hot water tank. Pete completed his PhD on intelligent hot water tanks at Oxford Uni with fellow student and co-founder Ren Kang, before going on to win a Technical Innovation award within the 2013 Shell Eco-Marathon electric car competition, and a prize in a Climate KiC venture competition, which was the genesis of Mixergy in 2014. Mixergy has since received investment from IP Group, Oxford Science Innovation, Centrica Innovations and Foresight Williams to grow and develop the business. About MixergyMixergy has developed an intelligent hot water tank, which is unlike others on the market. The Mixergy tank operates on an integrated Internet of Things platform and is designed to selectively heat smaller portions of water. As a fleet, Mixergy aims to offer a Demand Side Response (DSR) service to the National Grid, absorbing excess power load and time shifting demand to help balance the grid. This “Internet of Tanks” vision will help to facilitate the generation and utilisation of more renewables nationwide to support a greener future. The Mixergy tank is also a benefit to consumers, saving up to 40% on hot water bills through sophisticated machine learning.GUEST LINKS Mixergy Website- www.mixergy.co.ukMixergy on Linked In: https://www.linkedin.com/company/mixergy-ltd/Mixergy on Twitter: https://twitter.com/MixergyLtd EPISODE LINKSCleantech Mixergy Raises £3.6M - https://www.businesscloud.co.uk/news/cleantech-mixergy-raises-36mMixergy on Fully Charged - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1Z4JCoPAGcMixergy at Ecosummit 2019 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1AL_wDpTVEcChaos: Making a New Science – James Gleick - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaos:_Making_a_New_ScienceFollow us online, write a review (please) or subscribeI'm very keen to hear feedback on the podcast and my guests, and to hear your suggestions for future guests or topics. | Simon Acland, Green Angel Network – Episode 43 | 15 Jan 2020 | 00:49:26
As you will have gathered from this podcast, I live in and love the intersection of clean technology and entrepreneurship. This passion, and my role as CEO at Hyperion Executive Search brings me into contact with so many fascinating people, and I love to hear and share their stories. On recent podcasts I’ve spoken to leads at cleantech VCs, Publicly Listed tech funds and soon Corporate Venturing entities, but today a very import part of the funding ecosystem are Angels and Angel syndicates, and my guest Simon Acland has great insights into this part of the funding community.About our guestSimon Acland is a Founder and Director of Green Angel Syndicate, the only UK Business Angel group focussed on investing in companies that develop products and solutions that help tackle the climate emergency and environmental crisis and aim for a more efficient and sustainable use of global resources. He sits on the Board of Triple Point Income VCT plc, which has invested extensively in renewable energy and vertical farming, and is on the investment panel of the Triple Point Impact EIS Fund which makes green investments. He is a member of the investment committee of the Angel CoFund. He acts as chair or non-exec director of two companies he has backed in the green technology sector – Powervault, a developer and manufacturer of home electricity storage devices, including products which reuse batteries from electric vehicles, and NatureMetrics, a pioneer of environmental DNA sequencing techniques for monitoring biodiversity. Simon is a Non-Executive Director of the Satellite Applications Catapult, and Vice-Chair of Plantlife, the UK’s main wild plant conservation charity.Simon has a successful track record from over thirty years of investing in young technology businesses. For 19 years he was part of the team that built Quester into one of the UK’s most active early stage venture capital investors, and was Managing Director when it was sold in 2007. Since then he has personally been an active Business Angel investor. Many of the businesses that he backed have floated on various Stock Exchanges, and/or been successfully sold. He has lost count of the number of company boards of which he has been a member.Simon spent eight years as a Lambeth Borough Councillor and stood for parliament in 1987 as a candidate for the SDP/Liberal Alliance.Simon’s 2011 book “Angels, Dragons and Vultures – how to tame your investors and not lose your company”, is widely regarded as one of the most useful guides for entrepreneurs to the world of venture capital. His First Crusade historical novels, the Waste Land and the Flowers of Evil, may be of less practical use to the budding entrepreneur.GUEST LINKS HERESimon Acland on Linked In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/simonacland/Green Angel Syndicate on Linked In: https://www.linkedin.com/company/green-angel-syndicate/Green Angel Syndicate on Twitter: https://twitter.com/GAS_Investments EPISODE LINKS HEREAngels, Dragons & Vultures - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1857885511/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0Follow us online, write a review (please) or subscribeI'm very keen to hear feedback on the podcast and my guests, and to hear your suggestions for future guests or topics. | Mike Hopkins, Cleantech investor and CEO – Episode 41 | 04 Dec 2019 | 00:50:05
What’s it all about?I first reached out to Mike as I saw the incredible work he was doing as CEO of Ice Energy. As you’ll know, as much as I love traditional battery storage technologies, I also have a passion for thermal storage solutions, and Ice Energy has a great product. I’ve kept in touch as Mike moved on to new ventures, and had the opportunity to meet recently in San Diego at Energy Storage North America. Here we extend that conversation, into some possible controversial territory.About our guestMike Hopkins is CEO of Bakken Midstream (www.bakkenmidstream.com), a company he and his partners launched in late 2018 to develop and own value-added natural gas infrastructure in North Dakota.Prior to launching Bakken Midstream, Mike was the long-serving CEO of Ice Energy (www.ice-energy.com). Ice Energy is the leading provider of thermal energy storage for the electricity grid, with its award-winning Ice Bear system deployed in more than 40 utility service territories. During his tenure as CEO, Mike secured the largest ever thermal energy storage contract, expanded the product line, arranged over $55 million in funding and increased revenue over 700%. Prior to joining Ice Energy, Mike practiced law for 18 years as a partner with Bennett Jones LLP, a preeminent Canadian law firm recognized internationally as a leader in the fields of energy and climate change. He helped his clients successfully develop and finance over $12 billion of natural gas fired power plants in the US, Canada, Australia and the UK. Mike served on the law firm's Executive Committee and led their Utilities, International and Independent Power Groups. Mike left Bennett Jones at the end of 2002 to lead the workout of a private data center developer. After the successful sale of that company, Mike co-founded a geomatics company and assisted several other startups, including Ice Energy which he joined in 2009.Mike is a member of the Committee for Economic Development of the Conference Board, the Board of Chancellors of Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International, and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Canada, and the Board of Directors of OGL Engineering, Nelumbo, Inc and Plus Power, LLC. | Charlie Blair, Gravitricity – Episode 38 | 30 Oct 2019 | 00:47:22
What’s it all about? At Hyperion we love all things energy storage, and we’re always following new companies and technologies that can and will enable the energy transition. I recently met the team from Gravitricity at a trade show I was speaking at, and liked the look of their solution, anything that uses old and established technologies for new and innovative solutions is good as far as we’re concerned, so we asked their MD Charlie Blair to share more.About our guestCharlie joined Gravitricity as a founder shareholder in 2015, having worked with co-founders Peter Fraenkel and Martin Wright while in the Innovation Team at the Carbon Trust. The team has grown since then and he’s been instrumental in developing the strategic relationships with manufacturing partners that will allow the technology to get to market fast. Gravitricity is currently building at 250Kw, 50 tonne, Concept Demonstrator in Leith, Edinburgh. Charlie has a Geography degree from Durham University and an Energy Systems MSc from Imperial College. He was elected a Fellow of the Energy Institute in 2019. Gravitricity is an energy technology company based in Edinburgh developing groundbreaking underground storage. Grid-scale electricity storage spend is projected to grow from around $3 billion per year today to over $50 billion per year by 2040. Gravitricity’s patented technology is based on a simple principle: raising and lowering a heavy weight to store and release energy. The Gravitricity system suspends weights of 500 - 5000 tonnes in a deep shaft by a number of cables, each of which is engaged with a winch capable of lifting its share of the weight. Electrical power is then absorbed or generated by raising or lowering the weight. Gravitricity technology has fast response (<1s), extremely long life, high efficiency and levelised cost of storage almost half that of chemical batteries. The technology will initially be deployed at existing mine-shafts; later on in purpose-sunk shafts exactly where the grid needs storage. What’s it all about?I met Rob and his co-founder Dannan at the Oxford EV summit recently, though they had been on my radar a while. Hardly surprising given there success. In the two years since, the business has grown from the initial 5 cars they launched with in Birmingham, to now being the largest electric vehicle fleet in the UK. A great story of innovation, bootstrapping and fast growth and the changing mobility landscape.About our guestHaving graduated from Warwick University with a masters in Mechanical Engineering, Rob worked for 5 years at Jaguar Land Rover, culminating in managing the Product Strategy & Innovation team within the Corporate Strategy division. Initially taking the concept of an electric vehicle subscription service to JLR’s in-house business incubator, it was quickly recognised that the idea would have significant limitations as a JLR captive company. Rob was given approval to develop the idea outside of JLR and left to form the business in 2017. Since then the business has been growing at an electrifying 40% month on month, to now hold the title as the UK's largest electric vehicle fleet. | Dr. Fabian Lemke, nuventura - 21 | 01 May 2019 | 00:44:35
Dr. Fabian Lemke is a co-founder and managing director at nuventura. Together with nuventura, Fabian is working on eliminating SF6 – the most potent greenhouse gas – from the electricity grid. Their innovative switchgear technology simply replaces SF6 with dry air, which not only leads to environmental benefits, but also enables significant performance advantages.A switchgear is an absolutely essential component of an electricity grid. It controls and distributes electrical power flow in the electricity grid network. Existing gas insulated switchgear (GIS) predominantly use sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) – the most potent greenhouse gas in existence - as an electrically insulating medium and often also as a breaking medium. The gas is 23,500 times stronger than CO2 in terms of its global warming potential (1). It also has an extremely long lifetime of 3,200 years (2). Our aim is to eliminate SF6 from the electrical grid while improving the switchgear ‘s performance.Prior to nuventura, Fabian worked for 5 years in the energy sector for McKinsey and 3 years as a founder and CEO of Sanubi. He holds an engineering degree in Reactor Technology from the RWTH Aachen University and a PhD in Engineering from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. | Ramya Swaminathan, Malta Inc - Episode 18 | 10 Apr 2019 | 00:34:57
It was very flattering when a Google Moonshot company, invested in by Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos funded Breakthrough Energy Ventures, called to ask for help to scale their team. I took the opportunity whilst in Boston, MA, meeting the team, to record this episode with CEO Ramya Swaminathan, and to hear what’s it like to have such auspicious origins and investors, and what pressure that brings.About our guestRamya Swaminathan joined Malta from Rye Development, where she was CEO, co-founder and Member of the Board of FFP New Hydro. Under her leadership, Rye Development grew to be the leading developer of new hydropower projects in the United States and its portfolio of development projects, held at its holdco affiliate, FFP New Hydro, advanced from concept through FERC licensing and late stage development financing. She was also responsible for the expansion of Rye’s platform into energy storage, with the addition of two sizable pumped hydro storage development projects in the Pacific Northwest. At Rye Development, Ms. Swaminathan led a multi-disciplinary team, with specialists in engineering and construction, regulatory and environmental aspects, and power marketing. She also led the company through several financing rounds, both at the platform and the project levels.Prior to her work in the hydropower space, Ms. Swaminathan was a public finance banker, most recently as a Director at UBS, where she focused on public power clients and senior managed more than $10 billion in financings. Ms. Swaminathan holds a Master’s in Public Policy from the John F. Kennedy School of Government and a BA in Anthropology from Amherst College. The Malta concept is built upon well-established principles in thermodynamics for a system that stores energy as heat (in molten salt) and as cold (in a chilled liquid). The project was incubated at X, Alphabet’s Moonshot Factory, which applies audacious thinking and radical new technologies to solve the world’s most challenging problems. Based on the research they’d seen, X identified the Malta system as a product that had the potential to unlock a wealth of inexpensive clean energy to address global energy demands.X’s team designed individual system components and evaluated whether the concept could work in the real world at a competitive price-point. The next two years were spent incubating the concept with a focus on derisking the most challenging concepts first. When it became clear that the technology had potential to be commercially viable at grid scale, Malta was formed outside of Alphabet as its own independent company.Ramya Swaminathan on Linked In https://www.linkedin.com/in/ramya-swaminathan-6a52a8b/Malta Inc website https://www.maltainc.com/News stories discussed this week3 things to know about Malta, the Google-incubated and Bill Gates-backed startup https://www.greenbiz.com/article/3-things-know-about-malta-google-incubated-and-bill-gates-backed-startupFollow us online, write a review (please) or subscribeI’m very keen to hear feedback on the podcast and my guests, and to hear your suggestions for future guests or topics.
