| The Thing (1982) | 04 Apr 2023 | 01:29:06 | |
When a mysterious dog stumbles upon an American military base camp, a group of scientists will soon find out that this canine is no ordinary dog, it will soon become the thing they will all fear the most. John Carpenter's 1982 classic, The Thing, is a sci-fi horror thriller whodunnit that was ahead of its time upon its initial release; being maligned as a gorefest without substance, it has now become a Mount Rushmore horror film masterpiece that continues to age like fine wine. If you haven't seen the film, run, don't walk to see this unforgettable gem. As always, we thank our supporters and we hope you enjoyed the film along with our discussion.

| They Live (1988) | 17 Mar 2023 | 01:29:06 | |
After stumbling into a new town while looking for work, John Nada discovers an underground resistance hellbent on waking the general public from their slumber induced by insidious forces who control mass media and government entities. Their secret weapon? Sunglasses that filter out subliminal messages and illusions fed through television, advertisements, and more than you could possibly imagine.
Filled with an uncanny amount of prescience that foretold the rise of hyperconsumerism, police militarization, authoritarianism, far-reaching oligarchies, corporate greed, class warfare, collective lethargy, and unyielding zealotry, John Carpenter’s “They Live" was ultimately considered a commercial failure at the time of its release. Eventually it became a cult phenomenon, where people often know many of its hooks but have never taken the bait.
We are here to tell you that this film is an overlooked masterpiece that sparks important questions, encourages public discourse, and urges viewers to question the ideologies and worldviews that make up their reality.
Disclaimer: A sizable portion of this episode is missing because our recording became corrupted halfway through. Was foul play involved? | Gattaca (1997) Ft. Chris Valenzuela | 22 Dec 2022 | 01:20:55
When hyper-specialization and scientific hubris combined to create a new standard for genetic sequencing in human DNA, it birthed the next stage in the evolution of class warfare. Regardless of one's credentials, experience, and effort, their trajectory in life is now determined, dictated, and tracked entirely by their genetic makeup. Those birthed under natural conditions are discriminated against and labeled "in-valid" by society due to their organic abnormalities and reduced lifespan.
Vincent Freeman, an in-valid, works as a janitor at a local space program named Gattaca. Due to his weak heart, he will never be admitted to the program and will remain earthbound until the day he dies. He decides to go against his fate by purchasing the genetic makeup of a near-perfect individual named Jerome Morrow. Vincent poses as Jerome and infiltrates Gattaca to become one step closer to leaving behind his genetic shackles on Earth.

| Cure (1997) | 11 Oct 2022 | 01:42:05 | |
A string of murders begin piling up in Tokyo, as each killing is tied through an X mark on each victim's body. While the killer is caught each time, they seem to have no recollection or purpose. Detective Takabe and psychologist Sakuma are tasked to investigate, however, the connections and clues they rack up only continue to add more dread and frustration. Kiyoshi Kurosawa's breakout psychological horror feature in Cure marked a significant upwards trajectory in Japanese horror in the late 90's and early 2000's. | August in the Water (1995) | 10 Aug 2022 | 01:47:43
When two meteorites simultaneously land in the mountains near the town of Fukuoka, a strange set of cosmic events unfold amidst a deadly endemic brought on by drought, where the organs of townsfolk are petrified – causing them to drop dead at a moment's notice. Izumi, a teenage diving prodigy, transfers to a local high school, where she quickly earns the adoration of classmates and the infatuation of two boys, Mao and Ukiya.
What follows is a hallucinogenic and dreamlike exploration into the unseen universe that envelops us all in the guise of a coming-of-age film, weaving and connecting the various dots that make up our existence. With a score resembling the depths of Atlantis and metaphysical imagery to match, Gakuryū Ishii delivers a meditative and transcendental experience unlike no other.

| Southland Tales (2006) | 19 Jul 2023 | 02:02:37 | |
After waking up from a strange dream, famous action star, Boxer Santaros, finds himself struck with amnesia, as he traverses through dystopian Southern California with Ronald Taverner, who is looking for his twin brother Roland, and Krysta Now, former adult actress turned reality tv star and entrepreneur, who are all entangled in a web of conspiracies that involves neo-Marxists, the Patriot Act, a prophetic screenplay, World War III, quantum teleportation, and the end of the world. Richard Kelly's prescient satire came at a time when the world was not ready to look itself in the mirror. Some may say Kelly himself is a prophet from the future, and others may deem him as an overly ambitious filmmaker stricken by naivety and luck. However, with a star-studded cast involving Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Sean William Scott, Justin Timberlake, Mandy Moore, Amy Poehler, and Kevin Smith, Southland Tales may be the most polarizing and divisive film of all time, yet, to Kelly, it was his most proud piece of work. Whether or not you love it, hate it, or feel somewhere in the middle, this film will garner a reaction out of you for better or for worse. Regardless, we hope you enjoyed the discussion and we strongly suggest you check out this underrated gem.

| Memoria (2021) | 07 May 2022 | 01:32:14 | |
While visiting her ill sister in the heart of Bogota, Colombia, a Scottish orchid farmer develops a strange phenomenon where loud banging noises prevent her from getting any sleep at night. Written and directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul, this ethereal film effortlessly suspends itself in the space between wakefulness and slumber.
With a standout performance by Tilda Swinton as Jessica, we follow an outsider into a land that feels both foreign and familiar at once. The pangs of horror, anxiety, and loneliness that we experience alongside her character as she navigates her turbulent inner and external world, find release and room to breathe in this meditative exploration of the senses.

| After Life (1998) | 06 Jul 2023 | 01:26:32 | |
After living out their final moments, a group of strangers arrives at an in-between realm where a group of counselors awaits them. The group receives a final task before they depart for good: they must pick one memory from each of their lives for the counselors to recreate. At the end of the week, each memory will be screened and shared with the audience. Afterward, each visitor will shed their final ties to the world and dissipate into the ether, living out their chosen memory for eternity.
Hirokazu Kore-eeda's 1998 exploration of memory, mortality, and transience offers a heartfelt and offbeat perspective on the arduous task of looking back on one's life at the end of their journey. Perhaps by looking back on the characters' lives, we can find a renewed sense of purpose in our own lives.
We hope you enjoy our discussion and encourage you to seek this film out if you haven't already.

"They said it would be invisible. Like jumping into an invisible current that just carries you away." The conclusion to The OA's story ends here. Or does it? OA concludes her story to the Crestwood Five before being discovered. Consequently, she gets relocated to a hotel where she gives closure to Nancy and Abel, while the boys and BBA put the pieces of her story together in order to get a clearer picture of it all. Meanwhile, OA gets one final premonition that will propel her to do something she's never done. The OA's season one finale, "Invisible Self" was absolutely bone-chilling, as it leaves you shaken to the core. When it nears its end, we can only imagine what goes through everyone's minds: shock, awe, or laughter even. What happens in the final minutes of the show has been undoubtedly met with a polarizing reaction that goes from eerily beautiful to "unfortunate bang" and "imperfect feeling" by some. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, creators Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij do not appear to be phased by the critics. Marling states, "What I feel is that your job as a storyteller just to, in that moment as best as you know how, try to tell a legible story. And each time, hopefully get a little bit better at making it legible, and the response is up to the audience. I feel all responses are fair game. Some of the things that have moved me the most in the world are things that other people have not been moved by at all." Batmanglij has a similar sentiment, "But I think people laughing at it and stuff, that’s good. That’s part of it." He goes on to elaborate that anything unique or otherworldly would cause someone to laugh. He goes on to say, "I think anything truly different, it doesn’t just cause awe, and I think a lot of people feel awe when they see the movements — but probably just as many people feel the giggle inside of them and I think that’s OK. I don’t think there’s any specific way to feel." It's wonderful to know that no matter the reaction people have voiced about the finale and the movements, Brit and Zal are open to any and all criticisms, and they're facing it head on with their heads held high. After the credits roll, we go from questioning and discovering what is reality and what is fiction, and where do we take it from there? Since chapter 1, we've been on a journey to uncover what it really means to find your invisible self. Would you say you've found it, or is this just the beginning? There are so many questions and such few answers, but we're so happy that we've found a following that's willing to go on this journey with us. Thank you to the OA community for all the love, support, and interaction you've given and we hope to do more of this in the near future. We hope you enjoyed our season one finale recap and reaction by @patbermcgill @actuallyrichy and our special guest @_kevincarpio_ . Special shoutout to @joshmull for the support and interactions and @davi.cohen for the lovely clip he's allowed us to use. | Honey Boy (2019) Ft. Brandon Drew | 02 Apr 2022 | 02:05:31
Otis, a former child star caught in a downward spiral, is forced into rehab after a drunk driving incident places his reputation, career, and well-being in peril. Upon entering into the facility, Otis is diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and is court-ordered to undergo treatment to avoid a prison sentence. Facing an unwillingness to confront a fractured past, Otis revisits a painful and bittersweet time in his life to mend a broken relationship with his father.
This touching and heartfelt portrayal of making the inner trek to find acceptance and healing earns its place as a cathartic and beautiful film to experience time and time again. Directed by Alma Har’el and written by Shia LaBeouf, this story captures the essence of forgiveness and seeks to provide an answer toward breaking the cycle of generational trauma.
We are joined by a great friend and guest of the show, Brandon Drew, who also picked this entry for us to review. As always, thank you for listening and we hope you enjoy the discussion.

| The OA - Part 1, Chapter 7: Empire of Light | 01 Apr 2022 | 01:21:10 | |
"You know why we, uh why we like to be hugged? The way I see it, it sets a limit on the pain. You know? Puts a perimeter around it." The OA's Chapter 7 episode, "Empire of Light" continues the story all in the present day, as OA receives another terrible dream or possible premonition while dealing with the potential trauma she might've caused to her adoptive parents, Abel and Nancy Johnson, that fateful day she left over 7 years ago. In the mean time, the Crestwood 5 is working on perfecting the movements for interdimensional travel while Steve's horrific actions has finally caught up to him. Although the entirety of "Empire of Light" stays within the present timeline in which we don't get to see what happens to Homer, Renata, Scott, and Rachel, we get an emotionally resonant episode about dealing with our past traumas and how that festers into our current daily lives. The chemistry between Phyllis Smith's BBA and Patrick Gibson's Steve soars here with such tidy and timely humor albeit in a very serious situation. The conclusion to the episode is incredibly chilling because of how high the emotional stakes are, especially considering that this may be the last time we get to hear The OA tell her story. "Tonight, I will finish telling my story. Are you ready?"

| The OA - Part 1, Chapter 6: Forking Paths | 24 Mar 2022 | 00:52:24 | |
"Hush don't you cry
In the next life
She takes me to the water
Don't say a word
And when I ask her
Is she doing alright
She's a rollercoaster
And yeah, she's a fire in the night"
In Part 1, Chapter 6 of The OA's "Forking Paths", we find ourselves in Hap's perspective, as he's in conflict with how he perceives himself among OA and the other captives and the deadly experiments he subjects to them. OA and the others have been practicing the movements and are in search of the fifth movement, while OA, in the present day, explains to the Crestwood Five that the movements will open a tunnel into another dimension, but they must do all five movements together and with perfect feeling. Jason Isaacs spurs a terrific performance in playing a subtle, but menacing antagonist in Hap, who continues to be one of the most compelling onscreen villains of all time. According to IMDB, the episode title, "Forking Paths", is a reference to Jorge Luis Borges' 1941 short story, "The Garden of Forking Paths". We hope you enjoyed this episode's recap and reaction by @patbertmcgill and @actuallyrichy, as we are now officially two episodes away from finishing part one of the series. Thank you again for listening, and continue to keep your front doors open. 🕊️
| The OA - Part 1, Chapter 5: Paradise | 18 Mar 2022 | 01:03:28 | |
In Part 1, Chapter 5 of The OA's Paradise, Hap has a fixation for a new subject in Cuba, reeling in Homer to help him capture her for his experiments while using that opportunity to fracture the relationship between Homer and OA. According to IMDB, the fifth subject, whose name is Renata, means "born again" in Latin languages. This chapter primarily focuses on Homer's journey in Cuba, realizing how much freedom he doesn't yet have despite being let out of his cage. Emory Cohen gives a chilling performance, as he displays levels of anxiety and guilt through his frantic expressions and puppy-dog eyes. And again, Brit Marling as The OA, continues to dazzle with an impassioned performance in the final ten minutes of Paradise. We hope you enjoyed this episode's recap and reaction by @patbertmcgill and @actuallyrichy, as we're closing in on the final third of season 1. | The Pink Cloud (2021) | 17 Mar 2022 | 01:10:12
A mysterious global phenomenon of unusual pink clouds carrying a deadly vapor has blanketed the world, killing anyone who steps outside in seconds. After a one night stand, Giovana and Yago awkwardly find themselves suddenly forced to quarantine in the same home to together due to the abrupt arrival of the murderous fog. As days extend to months then years, Iuli Gerbase’s eerie quarantine sci-fi is littered with a familiarity that sends us back to the pandemic’s darkest days. Written in 2017 and filmed in 2019, it’s worth considering the reception this film would have received if it was released earlier in the pandemic when many were re-visiting prescient pre-coronavirus films. The Pink Cloud may be the most upsettingly familiar one of them all. Accept what it is or go mad trying to battle it.

| The OA - Part 1, Chapter 4: Away | 10 Mar 2022 | 00:55:08 | |
"To exist is to survive unfair choices." In part 1, chapter 4's The OA "Away", we are given more details as to what's going on during Hap's experiments, OA returns from her second NDE and makes a difficult choice that will steer the group's purpose in a new direction, while Homer is determined to recount the deadly experiments being done to him. According to KPCC's The Frame, in an interview with Zal Batmanglij and Brit Marling, Batmanglij explains the incredibly real drowning sequences, "that's a real apparatus that we designed. That's not CG. That's real. So Brit really held her breath." He continues by saying, "I think we watch movies and stories on TV and we think that these things are completely fictions, but they're not. The actors have to really go through a lot of these emotional spaces to experience them." Brit Marling adds, "I think also there's something about this story that felt like, in order to touch the heights and the light that it wanted to touch, you have to go with this young woman who has survived a great deal and touch the very center of the dark with her." We're finally at the halfway point of part 1, and we hope you enjoyed this episode's recap and reaction by @patbertmcgill and @actuallyrichy. Thank you again for listening, and continue to keep your front doors open. 🕊️
| The OA - Part 1, Chapter 3: Champion | 03 Mar 2022 | 00:53:40 | |
In Part 1, Chapter 3's "Champion", OA finds herself imprisoned against her will by Hap, alongside three others in Homer, Rachel, and Scott. However, during her captivity, Hap shows OA a vulnerability that is not usually expressed towards the others, and OA uses this to her advantage to plot an escape. Meanwhile, in the present day, OA is pressed by a journalist to disclose the details of her captivity, much to her chagrin. The way we heal and move forward from our own trauma is a life-long process that not many understand how to endure. Not many understand that it may take weeks, months, years, or even lifetimes to heal from it. It takes massive courage to be vulnerable to someone, and it takes a certain level of sensitivity to express that. "Vulnerability is not winning or losing; it's having the courage to show up and be seen when we have no control over the outcome. Vulnerability is not weakness; it's our greatest measure of courage." – Brené Brown We hope you enjoyed this episode's recap and reaction by @patbertmcgill and @actuallyrichy. | Chan Is Missing (1982) | 27 Feb 2022 | 01:40:07
In the heart of early 1980's San Francisco lie a strong Asian and Asian American populous that make up just 22%, while a specific portion of the population is Chinese at 12%, according to the Bay Area Census. However, in Wayne Wang's directorial feature in Chan Is Missing (1982), Jo, played endearingly by Wood Moy, represents the uphill battle that Asian Americans faced when it came to visibility and recognition that has plagued them for over a century. Along with his nephew, Steve, played by the charismatic Marc Hayashi, they go on a strange and mundane journey through the depths of San Francisco to find a missing Chan Hung and their $4000, while finding out what it truly means to be an Asian American in a country that refuses to acknowledge who they are. Wang's debut feature is a timely poignant classic that shares its humor through animated facial expressions and sharp dialogue delivered brilliantly by its ensemble cast. For anyone who's ever felt like an outsider peering through the looking glass, this film touches deeply on an underrepresented perspective that is surely to enrich one's point of view. | The OA - Part 1, Chapter 2: New Colossus | 24 Feb 2022 | 00:40:45
In Part 1, Chapter 2's "New Colossus", we continue to recap OA's story as she recounts her childhood and arrival to America before a chance encounter with the man that will twist her fate forever. Standout performances from Brit Marling and Zoey Todorovsky as Nina/Prairie remain a highwater mark for "New Colossus" as well as Jason Isaacs as the mysteriously enigmatic Dr. Hunter Aloysius Percy. As the story slowly unravels, we get closer to the answers we seek, in addition to more questions about Prairie/OA's whereabouts for the past seven years. Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame, With conquering limbs astride from land to land; Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame. “Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” The poem, "The New Colossus", by Emma Lazarus, is recited by famous American poet himself, Yusef Komunyakaa, a Pulitzer prize winner in 1994 for his work in poetry, also lent his incredible voicework for this beautiful scene. We hope you enjoyed this episode's recap and reaction by @patbertmcgill and @actuallyrichy. Thank you again for listening, and continue to keep your front doors open. 🕊️

| Back to Back: Possibly in Michigan (1983) // Impostors (1979) Ft. Benz Doctolero | 19 Feb 2022 | 02:58:33 | |
Welcome to the first installment of our "Back to Back" series, where we pair a short film with a feature-length to build a one-of-a-kind discussion surrounding the juxtaposition and exploration of two distinct narratives. In this episode, our guest is a local filmmaker and friend of the podcast, Benz Doctolero. Benz picked both movies that we discussed: one being a short viral internet sensation, and the other being a near-impossible find.
We start with a short horror musical, Possibly in Michigan, directed by American video artist Cecelia Condit. First released in 1983, it has since gained both a resurgence in popularity and achieved cult status among the video art, experimental, and feminist communities after being made available online for mass audiences to discover.
Eerie and emanating from what feels like an alternate universe, this transgressive short film lures the viewer in with its macabre operatic tale of two women followed in a shopping mall by a masked killer named Arthur, where the pursuer becomes the pursued. What ensues is a shocking and desensitized commentary on violence in hyperconsumerist America in the 1980s.
Following the short, we discuss, Impostors, an eccentric anti-realism mystery/comedy feature from 1979 directed by a legend in American underground/independent cinema, Mark Rappaport. The film centers on a pair of depraved magicians who may or may not be twins in pursuit of Egyptian jewels, along with an obsessive audience member who becomes infatuated with the magicians' assistant. The swirling and ever-shifting dynamics between the characters only help to solidify its knack for the bizarre.
As it stands now, the film has become near-impossible to find, and we hope to shed light on one of the many movies that go missing year after year until another fortunate soul stumbles upon it only to keep the light of it alive for just a bit longer.
As always, thank you for listening and we hope you enjoy the discussion.

| The OA - Part 1, Chapter 1: Homecoming | 16 Feb 2022 | 00:41:25 | |
Hey Le Film listeners! We’ve decided to try something new where we recap and breakdown a television series we’re currently watching. In this episode, @patbertmcgill and @actuallyrichy go over episode 1 of Netflix’s The OA (2016). After 7 years of her mysterious disappearance, Prairie Johnson suddenly returns to her community with a newfound purpose and strange abilities. Before her disappearance, she was blind, and upon her return she can now see. However, she refuses to tell her story to anyone except for the 5 strangers with whom she recruits for a peculiar mission. According to IMDB, the introduction credits to The OA’s pilot episode “Homecoming” don’t appear until 57 minutes and 13 seconds, making it auspiciously one of the longest, if not, the longest intro for a television series ever. The OA not only stars Brit Marling as the titular character, she also co-wrote, co-created, and executively produced the show. With her, Zal Batminglij co-wrote, co-created, and executively produced while directing all 8 episodes of part I. We hope those who are familiar and unfamiliar to Netflix's mind-bending series stay tuned, as we continue to recap, react, and give our thoughts. Thank you for listening, and keep your front doors open. 🕊️ Where to watch: Netflix (Streaming) Instagram: @lefilmpodcast Twitter: @lefilmpod Send us questions, comments, feedback, and tv/film recommendations at: lefilmpodcast@gmail.com
