Domestic Abuse and Professional Responsibility: A Leadership Conversation
Season 5 · Episode 15
mercredi 25 mars 2026 • Duration 21:16
In this episode of LAWsome, we are discussing one of the most important topics we've ever covered on the podcast: domestic abuse. This issue is much more common than people think, even in high achievers, community leaders, and successful individuals. Co-hosts Tanner Jones and Matt Smyers sit down with the Founder and CEO of Lee Consultants, Amanda Lee, to speak about the responsibility leaders have in creating a safe environment where the topic can be discussed.
Amanda Lee was a trial attorney for 20 years, working in various areas, including organizations and non-profits that dealt with sexual abuse. For over a decade, while she built her career and became the successful woman she is today, she was a victim of domestic abuse. After she left that situation, she realized there was a large gap in not only knowledge but also resources for successful women in her situation. She built Lee Consultants to help others in similar situations.
Amanda shares information and actionable steps to take in helping raise awareness in the workplace, and offers resources to help. Tune in to this episode of LAWsome to learn why domestic abuse can be difficult to notice in legal professionals, how to better understand how you can help successful individuals who may be experiencing it, and how to challenge the narrative and stigmas associated with it.

Tweetables and Quotes:
"While you learn many things in law school and have a very large body of knowledge to draw from, that doesn't always translate into confidence presenting in front of others. Skills really targeting voice, body, mind and anxiety management are not usually a part of a law school education."@consultwebs
"Oftentimes when we ignore physiological and emotional emotions such as anxiety, it ends up getting louder and stronger." @consultwebs
"What happens when we're nervous? Well, we tend to shrink in on ourselves. What happens when we're at ease and confidence? Well, we tend to be more open. We tend to stand taller, have our arms by our sides rather than crossed. All of these things can convey a lot of confidence to our audience." @consultwebs
"We tend to place so much value on the content of our communication that we forget about how much we're communicating nonverbally." @consultwebs
"If someone wants to hire us, it's in our best benefit if we can appear calm, collected, confident, at ease." @consultwebs
"When it comes to persuasion it's not just about the argument itself and the content. It's the feeling of showmanship, being able to command attention via physical presence. And again, this doesn't have to be something you're born with. This is something that we can work on and it can grow." @consultwebs

Tweetables and Quotes:
"You hear it no matter what they want to say, is they [lawyers] want to move backwards. They want to go back to the way things were, and really that doesn't help [a firm's growth]. Most people don't want to go back." @consultwebs
"I'm really concerned that a lot of lawyers and firms are going to wanna go back and just do things the old way. But there have been improvement, we [lawyers] don't have to go to court for everything. There are certain things that are better in person but routine procedural things and a lot of those didn't need to be and I hope that judges don't wanna regress as well." @consultwebs
""Ethically, you need to be digitized. You know people hear paperless and get nervous but it's a digitized office - everything's scanned." @consultwebs
"The challenge behind [opting for tech] is always the culture. But when they get the 'aha' moment and go, 'wow, this is how it helps me' and when they see that and it could be something in a mundane process where you prevent deadlines from being missed. That makes an enormous difference." @consultwebs
"If you can automate a process and you save 10 seconds and you do that process 6X a day you are saving 250 minutes a year in time just on that process so you're saving 4 hours just because you've made it a little more efficient." @consultwebs
"Lawyers need to be acutely aware of cybersecurity issues because they are large targets, even if you're a small firm because you have information as a lawyer that people want. You have people's names, dates of birth, social security numbers, medical records, that type of information." @consultwebs
"[Adopting new technology] can be scary but at the same point, that doesn't mean it's impossible. It means you have to learn something new. You don't wanna go to a doctor who won't do MRIs because they weren't around when the doctor was in med school. Lawyers aren't really any different in that sense." @consultwebs

Tweetables and Quotes:
"Thinking back to the early 1990s, the practice of law was a male-dominated field. We had some female associates but we had no female partners at the time and thinking back even to the way that we used to dress to try to fit in with the men, we'd wear masculine jackets and even sometimes those horrible ties that we used to wear back in the 1990s." @consultwebs
"As the legal industry's recognition of the value of diversity has increased and evolved over I'd say in the last 30 years a similar recognition as to the importance of diverse leadership and women leadership in the organization has developed." @consultwebs
"Women [in law] get pulled into so many different directions, and we can get stretched thin. And right or wrong, there are certain notions that are grounded in history and also just in practice about what men tend to do in the home and in the family and what women tend to do in the home and in the family." @consultwebs
""And then the third thing that comes to my mind is really more of a barrier that I would say women tend to place on themselves and that is that women, in my opinion, often tend to be our harshest critics." @consultwebs
"Another thing about having a diverse team is that we better represent the interests of our clients through having that team together, because we're a trial firm. It's all litigation and so we are advocates for our clients before judges and juries and when you look at our clients, and our judges, and our juries, they're diverse." @consultwebs

Tweetables and Quotes:
"How can you accomplish the objective for your clients? Creativity is the best way to do it." @consultwebs
"Being in trial is like being a showman and you can be a showman when you're prepared." @consultwebs
"I also mentor other lawyers [outside the office] by doing seminars and the best advice that I can give is: preparation. I keep stressing preparation. You have to do everything to the best of your ability. Also you need to be creative - you have to think outside of the box." @consultwebs
"The biggest change in my life: changing to learn how to prepare. Fully and totally prepared, and be willing to do whatever it takes. Don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today because tomorrow some other thing may come up and now you don't have the time to do the full best job you can." @consultwebs
"If you're not preparing to win, you're preparing to fail." @consultwebs
""Get out, don't just stay in your office. If there's an event in your local community, get out there, meet people, pass out cards. You have to be a good lawyer to win a case but you gotta get the case before you can win it so you gotta get out there and let your name be known." @consultwebs
