The Crime That Shattered Lives

On November 15, 1989, a 15-year-old girl from Peekskill, New York, vanished after school. Her body was discovered two days later, naked and brutally beaten, with clear signs of rape. The community was devastated, and the police were under intense pressure to find the perpetrator. Jeffrey Deskovic, a 16-year-old classmate of the victim, became the prime suspect due to his emotional response to her death. Despite his innocence, he states that the police coerced him into confessing to the crime after hours of intense interrogation. A Confession Coerced

Deskovic’s confession was a result of relentless pressure from law enforcement. Over the course of several interrogations, he was subjected to a polygraph test in a small room, deprived of food, and isolated without legal representation. Exhausted and scared, Deskovic eventually broke down and confessed, despite knowing he was innocent. His alleged confession was the cornerstone of the prosecution’s case, even though DNA evidence from the crime scene did not match his DNA. The Injustice of the Trial

In January 1991, despite the DNA evidence that excluded him as the source of the semen found on the victim, Jeffrey Deskovic was convicted of first-degree rape and second-degree murder. The prosecution argued that the semen belonged to a consensual partner and that Deskovic killed the victim in a fit of jealousy. The jury believed the coerced confession over the scientific evidence, leading to his wrongful conviction.

Exoneration Through DNA

In 2006, the Innocence Project took on Deskovic’s case, re-examining the DNA evidence with advanced technology. The results pointed to to Steven Cunningham, a convicted murderer already serving time for another crime. On September 20, 2006, Deskovic was released from prison, and his conviction was overturned. The nightmare was finally over, but the scars of his wrongful imprisonment would last a lifetime. Alan Painter, his brother, shares his poignant account of the murder and its profound impact on him, their entire family, and the local community. Chief of Police Ralph Arthur Painter, who served with the Rainier Police Department in Oregon, met an untimely end on January 5, 2011. The tragic incident transpired as Chief Painter responded to a local car stereo shop on Rock Crest Street, where a man was attempting to abscond with a vehicle that didn't belong to him. Upon making contact with the suspect, a struggle ensued, resulting in the assailant disarming Chief Painter and fatally shooting him. Following this violent encounter, the man engaged in an exchange of gunfire with responding officers before being wounded and apprehended.

In March 2019, the perpetrator entered a guilty plea to aggravated murder and was subsequently sentenced to life in prison.

On April 13th, 2019, the subject's half-brother fatally shot Deputy Sheriff Justin DeRosier with the Cowlitz County Sheriff's Office near Kalama, Washington. Murder of Police Chief, Killer's Plea Deal. Brother's Story. 

Chief Painter had served with the Rainier Police Department for 25 years. He is survived by his wife and seven children.

George Filenko, the Police Chief of Round Lake Park, Illinois, retired on February 18, 2021, culminating his 37-year career in law enforcement. He had assumed the role of chief in Round Lake Park in August 1999 and played an instrumental part in the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force for 11 years, eventually becoming its commander for six years. George Filenko's journey in law enforcement began with part-time work as Hainesville's police chief and eventually led him to become a part-time officer in Round Lake Park. He attended the Suburban Law Enforcement Academy at the College of DuPage, climbing through the ranks to achieve the position of chief.

State law mandates that police officers retire by age 65, leading to Chief Filenko's retirement. Throughout his career, he was involved in several high-profile cases, including the investigation into the suicide of a Fox Lake police Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz, the prosecution of day care worker Melissa Calusinski in a homicide case, and the examination of the murder of Rhoni Reuter, the girlfriend of former Chicago Bears defensive back Shaun Gayle. One particularly memorable case for Chief Filenko was the 2013 murder of 5-month-old Joshua Summeries in Zion, where the baby's body was never located. Demetries Thorpe of Zion received a 30-year prison sentence for the crime in 2014.

It all unfolded when a 911 call came in, reporting a heated argument between a Montana resident and his spouse. The caller's distressing words revealed that the suspect was armed, possessing two handguns and a rifle.

Upon arriving at the scene, Lieutenant John O'Brien was met with a harrowing showdown. As he approached the front door, a rapid exchange of gunfire erupted between him and the armed suspect. In those tense moments, Lieutenant O'Brien experienced a profound sense of tunnel vision, where time seemed to stretch infinitely. Following his Air Force tenure, Michael found a new home with the Walnut Creek Police Department, serving in various capacities, including Patrol Officer, Driver Training Instructor (EVOC), Field Training Officer (FTO), SIU Detective, Undercover CA DOJ Narcotic Task Force Agent (Contra Costa County), Public Information Officer (PIO), and Patrol Sergeant. In 2014, he received the Walnut Creek PD Distinguished Service Medal for his courageous and life-saving actions during a Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting in 2012.

As the Agent in Charge of SOD, Mr. Maltz played a pivotal role in developing and implementing DOJ's and the Department of Homeland Security's nationwide de-confliction program. He was instrumental in coordinating multi-agency efforts that led to the capture of Sinaloa Cartel Kingpin El Chapo Guzman, an accomplishment that earned him appearances on CBS 60 Minutes, NBC, and CNN. Mr. Maltz also formally established the Counter Narco-Terrorism Operations Center (CNTOC) in January 2007, facilitating narco-terrorism operations, including the identification of a trade-based money laundering scheme supporting Hezbollah. This work resulted in a subsequent U.S. Treasury Patriot Act 311 action, leading to a $150 million seizure as part of the Hezbollah drug and money laundering initiative named Project Cassandra.

Under Mr. Maltz's leadership, the Bi-Lateral Global Investigations Unit within SOD was enhanced, resulting in the prosecution of some of the highest-level criminals globally. Notable achievements included the arrest and conviction of notorious arms trafficker Viktor Bout, arms trafficker and terrorist Monzer Al Kassar (the alleged mastermind behind the Achille Lauro hijacking), the capture and conviction of Haji Juma Khan, a reputed Afghanistan drug kingpin with ties to the Taliban, the capture and conviction of Afghan heroin kingpin Haji Bagcho, and the arrest and conviction of global transnational criminal Paul Le Roux. He served as a spokesperson in Congress and as the lead representative for the DEA for over a decade, particularly on "going dark" issues related to advanced communications and encryption. He was also a member of the DOJ's Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA) briefing team, addressing the complex issues impacting law enforcement. To celebrate, they partied at the Angel Lounge, consuming copious amounts of alcohol and barbiturates, causing multiple noise complaints from neighbors. When Officers Tedesco and Voto arrived to quell the disturbance, they were viciously attacked, and their service weapon was seized. The assailants proceeded to pistol-whip the officers and ultimately shot them to death.

Murder Of Her Police Partner, Police Officer's Nightmare,  In a grim turn of events in the streets of Detroit, Michigan, Police Officer Patrick Prohm's life was brutally taken on January 9, 1996. Little did he know that a routine car stop would thrust him into the midst of a violent crime, ultimately leading to his untimely death. Officer Prohm's nightmare began when he decided to pull over a stolen car, unaware that the occupants were suspects involved in an earlier shooting. In the blink of an eye, shots rang out, and a fatal round found its mark, taking his life and leaving the city in mourning. In the US, someone is sexually assaulted every 98 seconds. Over one-third of women have experienced rape, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner. Most victims of rape and sexual assault are women (91%), with the remaining 9% being men. Women are more likely to be assaulted by someone they know than by a stranger.

Millions of American women have experienced rape, with young women at particular risk. As of 1998, an estimated 17.7 million American women had been victims of attempted or completed rape. Among juvenile victims, 82% are female, and 90% of adult rape victims are female. Women aged 16-19 are four times more likely than the general population to be victims, and college students aged 18-24 are three times more likely to experience sexual violence than their non-college peers. Feeling afraid during and after a traumatic situation is natural. Fear triggers the body's “fight-or-flight” response, helping us avoid or respond to potential threats. People may experience a range of reactions following trauma, and most recover from initial symptoms over time. However, those who continue to struggle may be diagnosed with PTSD.

PTSD can affect anyone, regardless of age. This includes combat veterans, individuals who have experienced or witnessed physical or sexual assault, abuse, accidents, disasters, or other serious events. Those with PTSD may feel stressed or frightened even when they are not in danger.

According to the National Center for PTSD, a program of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, about six out of every 100 people will experience PTSD at some point in their lives. Women are more likely to develop PTSD than men. Certain aspects of the traumatic event and some biological factors, such as genetics, may increase the likelihood of developing PTSD. The Caylee Anthony Case

The story of Casey Anthony and her daughter Caylee has captivated the nation since the toddler was first reported missing in July 2008. The saga began on July 15, 2008, when Cindy Anthony, Casey’s mother, reported to the police that her 2-year-old granddaughter, Caylee, had been missing for a month. This phone call set off a painstaking search for the toddler and an intense investigation into her then-22-year-old mother, Casey. Investigations into Casey’s cell phone, computer, and vehicle revealed internet searches for chloroform and neck-breaking, as well as traces of chloroform and human decomposition in her car trunk. Consequently, Casey was charged with first-degree murder in October 2008. Two months later, Caylee’s skeletal remains were found in a wooded area near the Anthony family home in Florida. Throughout her 2011 trial and since her controversial acquittal, Casey has maintained her innocence, offering inconsistent explanations for Caylee’s death. Initially, she claimed a babysitter kidnapped Caylee, later stating that Caylee accidentally drowned in the family pool. In the 2022 Peacock documentary “Casey Anthony: Where the Truth Lies,” she accused her father, George Anthony, of staging Caylee’s drowning to cover up his alleged sexual abuse of her.

The Pulse Nightclub Shooting

On June 12, 2016, 29-year-old Omar Mateen shot and killed 49 people and wounded 53 others at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, before being fatally shot by Orlando Police officers after a three-hour standoff. In a 9-1-1 call shortly after the shooting began, Mateen pledged allegiance to the Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and cited the U.S. killing of Abu Waheeb in Iraq as the trigger for his actions. He later told a negotiator that his actions were motivated by American-led interventions in Iraq and Syria. The FBI deemed the incident a terrorist attack. Pulse was hosting a "Latin Night," and most victims were Latino. The shooting was the deadliest terrorist attack in the U.S. since the September 11 attacks and the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history until the 2017 Las Vegas shooting. With almost a decade of dedicated service, he had been involved in numerous arrests, most of them drug-related, in some of the city's most perilous areas. Meet Pete Thron, a highly decorated ex-New York City Housing Authority police officer. Pete's life took a tragic turn when he was arrested and charged with stealing $1,700 in cash from a drug purchaser within an apartment during a "buy and bust" operation. The story unfolds in 1982, stemming from what appeared to be a routine DUI traffic stop but ultimately resulted in the fatal shooting of Deputy Town Marshal Hart. What followed was a series of baffling events that continue to raise questions. One of the most perplexing aspects is the mysterious release of the suspect by judicial officials.

A multiyear manhunt ensued as law enforcement agencies, determined to bring the fugitive to justice, tirelessly pursued the elusive killer. The relentless search for the suspect left a lasting impact on all those involved, including David J. Brown.

As David recounts this harrowing journey, he also touches upon the eventual suicide of the suspect, shedding light on the personal devastation that unfolded in his own life. The helicopter unit had been requested to search for two bodies that were supposed to be in the area. The helicopter developed an issue and crashed.
