Episode 64 - Hyperfixations & Heartfelt Goodbyes18 Jul 202501:09:08

Call to Action: Help support the podcast via Patreon

Dan sits down with his daughter Eloise for a wide-ranging, heartfelt, and occasionally chaotic conversation that spans pop culture, music, neurodivergence, and the state of the world.

Dan calls Different Journeys CEO Mel Spencer with some really special news.

Dan and Eloise take a deep dive into the social media phenomenon The Basement Yard, unpacking why it’s so addictive and what it says about humor. Dan even writes his own slam poetry! Eloise shares updates on her friend’s band — which Dan is recording — and we reflect on the joy of making original music, even when the band talks a lot between takes.

Then we spiral into our shared hyper fixation: the TV show House. From Hugh Laurie’s brilliance to the show’s messy ethics, we explore why it still grips us years later.

Dan opens up about his lifelong love of Brian Wilson, whose recent passing has left a deep mark. He shares a personal musical tribute piece at the end of the episode — a moment of reflection, gratitude, and musical reverence.

We also get fired up about the complacency we see in today’s world. Where’s the rage? Where’s the accountability? We talk about the need for education, awareness, and action, especially around social justice and neurodivergence.

And finally, we share some listener-submitted Autistic Moments — those beautifully honest, funny, and insightful snapshots of neurodivergent life that remind us why this podcast exists.

Episode 36 - Autism and anxiety08 Nov 202301:06:06

Bianca and Dan have been absent for a few weeks and Chartreuse has something to say about that. Which leads us to this episode's topic. Anxiety. On a previous episode the listeners got to experience Bianca going through a tough stretch with her anxiety, and while she soldiered on it was clear the wounds were still new.  But with time and perspective (and perhaps a little medication) she is ready to discuss that experience with us. We also get to hear from some of the Party Poopers and how they cope when their anxiety gets a bit too much.

Episode 34 - Make Autism great again?19 Sep 202301:06:13

On this episode we dispel the idea that we need to return to better days. For an autistic person this is not a sensible or likely solution. We read a brilliant article from Kristy Forbes and look at common issues that autistic people experience when trying to just get life done.

We have another excellent review by Party Pooper Sonja on attending a concert as an autistic person.

Episode 29 - Autism and body dysmorphia25 Jul 202301:10:54

This episode proves to be a difficult challenge for Dan as he opens up about his body dysmorphia.  Dan, always the resilient chap, drops his guard and invites listeners to share his difficult journey from shame to revelation and hopefully acceptance. Please note this episode deals with eating disorders and may be triggering for some.

The episode also has its lighter moments, such as Bianca's shock at discovering her happiness bubble has been popped. She reflects on how her comfort and solace has been compromised with reality. Listeners will gain insight into how she copes with daily struggles and embraces the joy that autism brings to her life. Also has Bianca set up some kind of meth lab? Thats what the Chemist thought!

Also enjoy our regular segments such as Text Fuck Ups, Recommendation and Autistic Moments. And PLEASE for the love of Cod help Dan with his Facebook messages issues. Please send feedback.

Episode 18 - A powerful interview with an Autistic friend26 Mar 202301:23:44

This episode Dan interviews his friend and old workmate Shirl. It is an incredibly moving, candid and funny discussion that so many people will be able to associate with.  Shirl was diagnosed Autistic four years ago, around the same time as Dan, and shows another side to the diagnosis fallout. This was not an easy discussion for Shirl however the bigger priority was to share just how difficult it has been for us later diagnosed people, particularly in childhood and young adulthood.

We have a killer Autistic Moment and yet another new segment called Neurodivergent Digest, not to forget our Recommendations. Speaking of you can find Kristy Forbes on Facebook here.
Let it be known that the drumbeats in the podcast are Dan's first public performance on the drums.
For those not in the know the Harold audio relates to the TV show Neighbours.

Here is the excerpt mentioned by Dan -
Carl Sagans - The demon haunted world - 1995

“I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time -- when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness...

The dumbing down of American is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30 second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance”

― Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark

Episode 15 - Am I not Autistic enough25 Feb 202300:59:11

Like many other late diagnosed adults, we have to put up with verbal (and nonverbal) accusations of not actually being autistic, and we are up to here with it.
