Jim created No Money Motorsports - A site with the primary goal to get folks on track, as much as possible, by spending as little money as possible. He started autocrossing in 2007, started track days by volunteering with NASA in 2012 and moved up the HPDE ranks in his Daily Driver Miata. He's in his 5th year racing Spec Miata with NASA Northeast.
Dave (Episode 16) created a website, HPDEjunkie, the most inclusive and most current listing of HPDE / Track Days and Open Track events for North America.
We discuss their cars, how they built them, and get their advice on set ups and more.
Setting tire pressures, alignments, and suspension settings all get discussed. Dave's tire pressure tip - use white marker to highlight the tiny triangles on the shoulder of your tires to see if you are going past that point. If you are, increase the tire pressure. If you aren't close to the triangles, reduce the tire pressure.
Where to go for Miata advice and parts? Talk with other Miata drivers at a track day and see who's running well. Talk with them and see where they source their parts.
If you race your Miata be sure to check out the Mazda Motorsports website for .

We sit down with Reed Kryder from Kryder Racing and boy did we learn a lot! What a background!
Reed's a former IMSA and SCCA driver who now coaches aspiring racers and owns Kyder Racing which provides car set up services, offers an arrive and drive program, and builds cars for customers.
We talk about Reed getting his old GTU car back on track for a vintage race, Reed's background at Goodyear, and get his insights into better driving. Reed is responsible for the Test & Tune events at Nelson Ledges Road Course which offers a street car day and race car day each month.
Reed's advice on getting better? Work to get consistent and identify where your issues are (braking, knowing the apex, driving line, etc). He also suggests running 4-6 laps, make adjustments and repeat. Plus, he shares so much more! Check your tires after a session - which are hotter? Hotter tires are the ones that are sliding on the track.
Reed says, a lot of racing is passion - what's your passion? Go and do that.

I grabbed a few of the competitors and the event coordinators to get a recap of the Neohio SCCA Time Attack event at Nelson Ledges Road Course on October 17, 2021.

He's a Honda guy who started with a street car, joined SCCA, sold lots of his possessions, found a truck & trailer for $2500 and went to Summit Point and got his license.
He's a road racing driver in the SCCA Majors/ Super Tour/ Runoffs. Sits on the Steel Cities Region Board of Directors- Outreach Committee. Coyote is a Track Night in America Novice Coach and Pitt Race HPDE Coach.
In 2018 (first year of racing) was regional champ at Summit Point.
Coyote's been Rookie of the Year in two regions and in 2019 raced his first majors. Plus he qualified for Runoffs in 2019. He was top 9 in the Northeast in 2019.
2020 was kinda a mess, like it was for everyone.
2021 was off to a better start after a win at Summit Point. Pocono was a DNF and then a 3rd place. Racing at Pitt also had a DNF and at Watkins Glen had a tire blow out that resulted in a concussion and a lot of side damage.
He was actually finishing the car repairs at Indy during Runoffs.
2021 Runoffs had its up and downs. During the qualifying sessions he was getting faster until the camshaft broke. Bummer! However, after finding a head and 10 hours of work he was back, ready to go. He was the only FWD. After going off in T4 he picked up gravel which made its way into the timing belt area and game over. He was moving through the field too - going from 24th to 16th.
Coyote's advice to those that want to get into motorsports - just do it!
When it comes to resources Coyote recommends finding people who are winning in your same make and model car. Ask them what they are doing. What parts, what set up, etc.
Has Coyote bee late to grid? The answer is yes and listen to find out where and when.

Gabe Gutierrez attended a Cleveland Grand Prix with his brother and was hooked on racing and knew he had to get behind the wheel. Juan Pablo Montoya was influential to him as well. His wife purchased him a Stock Car Experience and we was hooked (an he blames her to this day)!
He started out doing lots of track days and he shares the story of leaving a wet Mid Ohio track day before the event was over. He's taken vehicles to more than 10 racetracks in 7 different states around the country. He's participated in multiple endurance races including the 24 hours at Nelson Ledges. Gabe's taken every opportunity to learn as much as he can and introduce people to the sport.
Gabe's hosted track days through his company, GANAR racing and found the experience to be fun and rewarding. He shares the story about helping get a new Porsche driver on track and that's what it's all about - sharing our sport and helping others.
When we were recording this Gabe was getting ready for NASA at Autobahn - we'll have to follow up and see how he did.
After we finished recorded he texted me and realized he didn't discuss finding a track mentor. This is a great point! If you want to get better find a mentor. They can help with advise, support and share their experiences. This will help in a big way!
Here's some great advice from Gabe: Preparation is key for success. Having the car ready before the event weekend is really big and will allow for a “relax” weekend where time is spent driving instead of working on the car. I have a checklist of things to do before the event and during the event (after each session). I recently created a maintenance log to allow me to look back and be able to know exactly when I did something to the car.
Preparing the car is extremely important but it is also as important to prepare yourself. I make sure I have what I need during the weekend to be relaxed and stress free (ice, water, food, clothes, sunscreen, hat, etc.) I like to look at the weather at the tracks location to help me prepare for the weekend but take extra clothes just in case. Planning on resting is also very important to me specially during long trips, I plan my stops ahead of time and I know where I am going to park to sleep/rest.
Gabe is the king of checklists and documents! He recommends having a checklist for the car, the trailer, and the truck. He has a post season checklist and uses a spreadsheet for all maintenance items on his vehicles. He even pre-plans his stops along the route to the track. Might be the most organized guy we've had on!
During our recording he shared some additional advice:
Follow an HPDE progression path, like NASA's
Seat time is key
Keep the car stock as long as you can
Slow down, learn and hit your marks - you'll get faster
What are Gabe's ideas on getting to grid? He wants to be early. It helps him mentally prepare. He uses an alarm to remind him when to leave for grid.
Gabe recommends the following resources: Facebook Groups (your type of car, the groups you run with, etc.) Connect with companies involved with your model vehicle Start learning how cars work (

We could have talked with Mike for hours! Braking is such an important topic and Mike provides some great insights into what drivers and racers need to know about how to get great braking performance.
Mike started racing in 1982 and raced in the Playboy Escort series, he has two class wins in the Longest Day at Nelson Ledges Road Course and won the Kryder Cup.
Carbotech Brakes was born out of necessity. A Corvette racer needed better braking options and started developing a friction material in his garage to give him the brakes he needed. In 2006 Mike and his family bought the company and they have never looked back.
Carbotech's customer support is second to none. Mike and his team are always answering questions and on many race weekends he's at the track helping clients. They can even make one-off sets of pads based on what you need.
We talk about brake fade, bleeding brakes, torquing lug nuts, lubricating contact points and so much more.
This is a must listen episode!

Time Trials and Time Attack are hot topics these days so let's have another Time Trials racer on the show.
In this episode we have Mike Kubiak who is a third generation Corvette racer who truly grew up at Nelson Ledges Road Course. At 12 years old he'd hop on the track after a race weekend and drive a manual transmission Camaro at 30 MPH!
Mike drives a 2003 Z06 in the Sport 2 Class in SCCA Time Trials events. The car is mostly stock.
When Mike's not at the track he's working for Bridgestone developing tires for the OEs.
Mike shares some good advice including: Watch YouTube videos prior to going to a new track - it's a great way to learn. Nut & Bolt your car between events Mentally run through the laps while sitting on grid
Here's what Mike brings to the track: Bring a canopy for shade Bring extra fuel Extra tires Water & Gatorade Tools (not a full box, but a good set to get most things done)
If you are new to track days or Time Trials here's Mike's advice: Get good brake pads and good brake fluid Remove all items from your interior Visual inspection A good helmet Leave the car alone - learn to drive and learn the tracks
Mike uses the Track Addict app and uses it with video to better understand where he can improve.
We also discuss the negative aspects to modding your car - which can put you into another class. Be thoughtful in your selection of modifications.

The indoor karting craze has taken the US by storm and in this episode we talk with Lee Boss from Boss Pro-Karting.
As a lifelong racer, hot rodder, and car guy thanks to his dad, Lee climbed the racing ranks for about 15 years, took a bit of a hiatus, and then started BOSS Pro-Karting with his cousin Brad.
Look at his racing resume!
1993 - Started racing go-karts at 5 yrs, Fremont Raceway Park 1996 - 1999: 3 national World Karting Association Championships and 8 divisional titles 2000: Moved to SKUSA Shifter Karts - 2nd Nationally 2001 - 2002: 2 track championships in 305 Sprint Cars at Sandusky Speedway 2003: Moved up to Super Modifieds, 3rd in MSA Championship 2004: Auto Value Sprint Series 410 sprints - lost my ride while leading points near end of season! Limited USAC Sprint Schedule (asphalt) 2005-2006: Full USAC Sprint Car schedule (dirt and asphalt). 2006: Graduated high school and hung up the helmet for college and a boring job after the '06 season and a trashed dirt car.
About Boss Pro-Karting:
"We are drivers. We believe in exhilaration through acceleration. We believe adrenaline trumps practicality, and that the edge of our comfort zone is where we learn the most. We believe that in this day of congestion and commuting, we are not alone in our longing for the freedom to run wide open, pushing the limits of grip and skill. It’s not about taking things to the extreme with abandoned disregard, but pushing beyond the comfortable deliberately, often, and with purpose."
That's our mission statement at BOSS Pro-Karting, while a bit dramatic, it's how we see things. It's hard NOT to have fun in a go-kart, and we absolutely do a lot of that. We can cater to anyone or any group at any experience level, and introducing people with zero racing experience to the fun of driving is one of our favorite things about BPK. For those that want to go hard though, that's where we stand out. Our standards are high for a racing experience, and everything from the track surface, kart choice, barrier system, setup, and more were designed for us to enjoy every lap as much as our customers.
Over the past few years we've expanded our corporate event and party options, added an outdoor track extension in the summer, brought in junior karts for ages 8 to 13 that are still wicked fast, and while we were shut down for COVID we built some cages and added Axe Throwing to our lineup. We're thrilled to still be here after 2020 and have some rather large plans for the future of BOSS Pro-Karting.

What the guys are up to: Bill shares an updated plan for being on track. The RX-7s might take a back seat to the Miata. Wait, neither of those have a back seat. Weird.
John asks about the E46 wagon that Bill's working on at the shop and John is still updating the kitchen.

Hey there! It's been two weeks, but we have another episode for you and it doesn't get any more grassroots than Jim Morris from Fauxrarri Motorsports.
Jim is a Marine Corps veteran (thank you!!!), husband, father, works full time at JE Pistons, just bought a house with a huge pole barn and is building a race car. Does he even sleep?
We talk about Jim's plans for the Fiero race car and his team. He shares advise for anyone thinking about racing in a series like ChampCar and NASA. Stay in touch with the team on the Facebook Page.
Bill updates the progress on his truck and maybe progress on the RX-7?
John shares a disgusting story about his house remodel project - good thing you can't smell through a podcast. LOL
Note: This one had a couple of swear words so we marked it explicit.

In this episode we talk with Mark Basso, Founder of Autobahn Country Club in Joliet IL.
As you'll hear Mark always enjoyed sports that required a helmet and developed an idea that allowed car enthusiasts to enjoy their passion while including their families in the events and outings.
Did you know that Joilet was the third site they worked with to get this concept off the ground? Talk about pushing forward on your goal and not letting "no" deter you!!
We also talk about how a few members have grown from racing karts to now driving in IMSA events. Pretty cool!
Bill and John don't really have any car project updates, but Bill talks about a very interesting find one of his techs had while performing an oil change.

We are excited to have local race promoter Randy Maggio on the podcast for a deeper dive into local racing. Randy and his family own the Painesville Speedway and Lorain Raceway Park - both in northern Ohio. This kid will knock your socks off! 20 years old and hustling each day to make local, oval racing the best it can be.
Randy talks about his family's racing history, what he has planned for 2021 (hint: there's already a full schedule at each venue), and he talks about this crazy thing called the Turkey Leg 150 (which Bill & John have both raced in).
Bill sort of has an update on getting ready to tackle the RX-7s, talks about how his truck is still in the body shop and shares that he hired a handyman to help with some projects at the shop.
John drives his E30 this week and needed a twist tie to fix his throttle. Plus there's some more Jaguar talk, this time on the silver one.
Thanks for listening and taking an interest in growing grassroots racing. The Late To Grid podcast shares the stories and inspiration that help listeners along their motorsports journey.
John talks about Ranger Rover Land Rover wheel fitment and Spec E46 questions. Bill's been slow to start his projects.
Just like in life things can be stuck and John asks about stuck wheels on an E46 wagon and how to get them unstuck. Again, similar to getting unstuck in life... use a little persuasion.
We interview Tim Wadsworth from Track First in Richfield Ohio.
Tim talks about his store and services. He addresses what track enthusiasts need to be doing in the off season to make sure that they are ready for the green flag to drop this season.
Tim was a great guest. If you have questions about safety gear check out Track First. Their support is second to none.

Bill & John head to Autobahn Country Club in early November. John brings his E46 M3 and Bill has his RX-7 which hasn't been on track for 10 years!
The guys share project updates and recap the trip to Autobahn. Unfortunately, Bill gets a ride back to the garages.
Thanks for listening!

Friends since high school, Bill Snow and John Thorne both have careers in the automotive industry and they still play with cars. So why not have a podcast talking about their car projects while interviewing industry insiders?
In Episode 1 Bill and John talk about the name, Late to Grid, and John's team name of procrasti-Racing and how they met in high school. Not only were they both cross country runners, but they both a Z cars. John a 1984 300ZX Turbo and Bill a 1982 280ZX.
The name, Late to Grid? Well, Bill and John are always running late and their track cars are never ready for the event! Hence, they are always late to grid.
What's funny is they don't have the time to record and produce a podcast - so how will this impact their car projects? You'll have to listen to find out. Speaking of funny, John is a stand up comic!
Join these guys are they give podcasting a try.

Compete with those that are better
Don't modify your car
Find a way to record you runs (Go Pro or similar camera)
Just get to an event!
Chip also shares some advice for the more experienced autocrosser.
Chip uses karting to keep the rust from building up in the off season.

Matt Harbert is an automotive technician at Atomic Autosports and Rad Air in Wickliffe. He's also the team lead on the Rad Air Racing team and I finally had him on the podcast.
Matt's full of energy and represents the great part of our sport. I am excited to see people like Matt taking an interest in grassroots racing and contributing to the industry rather than just be in the industry.
Matt shares some great advice...
Don't modify your car crazy
Skip Miata and buy a Corvette
Have fun (many people have told him this)
Get seat time
Change your fluids and look over your car prior to an event
Has Matt been Late To Grid? Very close and there's a big lesson involved.

The new year is almost here and it's time to get your goals in place to make sure that you won't be late to grid.
Why is goal setting so important for racers? We have a lot to do and having goals will help us make decisions that get us to the desired outcome that we have for our racing efforts.
In this episode I walk you through how to set goals and detail out the items that need to be completed to achieve your goals. It might seem like work, but having your goals outlined will help you save time and money. Who knows, it might help you win races too!
I mention the Johnny Miller episode and here's the link.
I review the SMART approach to goal setting...
The goal needs to be
S – Specific
M – Measurable
A – Achievable
R – Relevant
T – Time-Bound
I hope this episode helps you achieve your racing goals!

Johnny Miller is a very accomplished race car driver and he shares so much!
The conversation ranges from Johnny's racing career which started in SCCA autocross to why being relevant is important in your racing career (hint: this helps with getting sponsorships for grassroots racing).
He grew from Autocross to racing professionally in Trans Am, IMSA, and NASCAR.
He's set track records at many tracks, landed great sponsorships, and built a tire business to help grow grassroots racing.
Did you know that the government of New Zealand once paid racers and teams to race in their country? Johnny talks about it.
Johnny shares the idea that racing is a game of details. He's right! Listen in as he talks about this concept. His advice? Set goals - it helps get you where you want to go.
We also talk tires. How to store, where to start with tire pressures, how to choose.

With Camp being so new to racing he shares so many interesting points that can really help our listeners get started in racing.
Camp's advice to those that want to get into racing, network, meet people, get to the track. He also shares this nugget, If you don't try, the answer will always be no. How powerful!
He recommends listening to the more experienced people around you. It will only help you.
