The Art of the Sponsorship: Bridging the Gap Between Racing and ROI with JP Moery05 Jan 202600:31:57

Send us a text

Think you know sponsorships? Think again. In this episode, Bill Snow welcomes JP Moery to the Atomic Auto Sports Studio to peel back the curtain on high-level motorsports partnerships. From his roots in the Washington D.C. business community to managing sponsorships at the IndyCar level with A.J. Foyt Racing, JP shares why true "activation" is about more than just slapping a decal on a quarter panel.

JP explains how to shift your mindset from "asking for money" to "solving business problems," the power of viral moments (like Santino Ferrucci’s legendary podium beer chug), and why your closest circle of influence is your best prospecting ground. Whether you are a grassroots racer or aiming for the pros, this episode is a masterclass in business development, professional networking, and maintaining the positive mindset needed to stay on the gas.

No Rig? No Problem. Getting to the Grid Anyway04 Aug 202500:26:32

Send us a text

In this episode of Late to Grid, we sit down with Jack Butler—a rising star in grassroots motorsports. What started with video games and weekend karting sessions has transformed into real-world racing experience in Champ Car, open-wheel training at the Lucas Oil School of Racing, and competing in 14-hour endurance events at Daytona. Did we mention Jack just graduated high school?

We explore how Jack turned virtual laps into real seat time, the role sim racing played in building racecraft, and what it’s like to juggle college prep while hunting for apexes. Jack shares the importance of mentorship, making the most of limited seat time, and his future aspirations to race in IMSA.

Whether you're new to motorsports or chasing your next podium, Jack’s journey is a masterclass in starting young, staying humble, and showing up prepared.

Bill's Builds: The Neon, RX-7, and the Miata - Are any of them on track?05 Sep 202200:14:16

Every so often I'll record an episode to give you updates on my cars.  Mostly I do this to help insomniacs fall asleep.  Wait, I should be working on the RX-7 and not recording this episode!

Anyway, I thought I'd record a quick episode to update everyone on the three cars that seem to occupy my time right now; ACR Neon, RX-7, Miata.

Here's the video of picking up the RX-7 shell.   YouTube video of bringing home the RX-7 Shell

Crossover Episode: Garage Heros in Training Podcast with Bill & Vicki Fischer21 Aug 202201:21:06

Send us a text

Bill talks with Bill & Vicki Fischer from the Garage Heros in Training podcast.  The GHiT podcast aligns with what I am trying to do with the Late To Grid podcast, help more drivers get on track and get better with their driving. Basically, grow our sport!

There's so much great stuff shared in this episode.  We cover how they got started,  their 2022 season, and hear a funny story about driving an unlicensed race car on the street.

The best quote from the show is "If we wanted to win this race we would have brought different drivers."  While this will make you chuckle, it speaks to the fact that most of us are here to have fun, get better and be with friends.

Carter Pease - Round 3 Racing - From Karting to Formula Cars to WRL Endurance Racing12 Aug 202200:48:02

Send us a text

Carter Pease from Round 3 Racing joins Bill to talk about his motorsports progression from karting to racing Porsches in the World Racing League.

Carter shares some great advice about working hard to get where you want to be, networking and punctuality.  After moving through different classes of karting he attended the Lucas Oil School of Racing where he finished second in the shootout which earned him a funding to cover 50% of a season in the Lucas Oil Formula Race Series where he finished 5th in the points championship.

Through networking and an introduction to Brad McCall, he found himself a ride with Round 3 Racing.  Carter and his teammates had quick success in their first season in WRL.

Carter recommended reading The Go Giver.

I'm still here!

In this episode I provide some updates the the Neon, the RX-7 and racing.

Plus, let's have a replay of this great discussion I have with Mike Puskar from Carbotech Brakes.  When I attend track days the two questions I get asked most often involve tires and brakes.  Many driver's overlook the importance of proper brakes - specifically, high temp brake fluid and proper track pads.

At our recent Motorsports Expo, tires was the most popular topic discussed so I thought it was a good idea to have Mike Kubiak on to talk about track day and race day tires.

Mike spent six years as a tire engineer and now works for a friction (brakes) company.  He is a successful Time Trial racer and had our attendees on the edge of their seat at the Expo.

We cover everything from how to select tires to tire storage.  We talk about getting the most from your tires, tire pressures, and how to read your tires.

Mike and I also discuss his 2022 season.

Send us a text

In this episode of Late to Grid, we sit down with Dexter Shreve, who shares the story of finally chasing down his motorsports dream—starting with a Track Night in America event…in his daily driver Toyota Camry.

Dexter walks us through the nerves, the excitement, and the learning curve of getting on track for the first time. From buying his first helmet on the way to the event to pushing his Camry harder than ever before, Dexter’s story proves that you don’t need a race car to get started—you just need to go.

We also talk about vintage racing dreams, balancing family and business ownership with track time, and how even the smallest first step can lead to big things.

Whether you're still “thinking about it” or reminiscing about your first event, Dexter’s story will inspire you to stop waiting and just drive.

The season might be over, but the work is just beginning. Don't let your track, autocross or racecar sit idle this off season. Vinnie Taibi - Autocross, Time Trials, and the Indy SCCA Region30 Mar 202200:50:01

Send us a text

If you want to get into motorsports - this is the episode to listen to!!

Want to learn more about Time Trials events - this is the episode to listen to!

So why listen to this episode?  My guest, Vinnie Taibi, does an awesome job of explaining the progression from volunteer to being an on track racer.   Plus he walks us through what Time Trials event looks like.

Vinnie is the Social Media Director and Time Trials Chair for the Indianapolis Region of the SCCA and is the new Great Lakes Division Time Trial Admin.  Man, he keeps busy!

We talk about how Vinnie got into motorsports which was, of course, influenced by family as it many times is.  We also cover the cars that Vinnie has owned and there's a great Integra story in there too.

We need more people like Vinnie in our sport.  He's not afraid to share and try new ideas. He's generous with his time and he has lots of energy.

One of the best quotes from Vinnie is, "Come from the cars and stay for the people."  This is really what's it about.  It's about having fun with others, building relationships and helping each other get better.

Jimmy Peters from Resolute Motorsports Club joins me on the latest edition of the Late To Grid podcast.

It all started with a 1972 Chevy Nova  that was built for Autocrossing and track days.  Jimmy found a gap in track day offerings and wanted to create something that would fit everyone's schedule.  So now he's building a 500 acre motorsports venue!

Lots of great insights in this episode from how to tackle a big project to how networking helps connect you with people that can help you.

We are super excited for Jimmy and the motorsports community and can't wait to record future episodes at the facility!

Chris Ludwig from LMS-EFI is an ITS Champion and Engine Management Guru26 Feb 202200:53:07

Send us a text

Like many of our guests Chris grew up in a motorsports family.

Chris raced jet skis and has a funny Late To Grid story that he shares.  He made it to the Jet Ski World Finals in 1998! When he was done racing on water he found the SCCA and started racing RX-7s.

In 2004 he started LMS-EFI and has been focused on engine management systems, data loggers, dashes, and complete vehicle wiring.  While his focus is on Mazda and rotary, Chris works on many other makes and models.

He now races an ex-NASCAR car in GTA  and ST2 in NASA.  How fun!  He set a track record at Gingerman in GTA and won a sprint race at Mid-Ohio in the RX-7 that I now own.  He's fast!

What keeps interested in motorsports? Customers become friends.  He likes the people and the smell of race fuel.

He's very thankful that his wife and sons are supportive of his racing and the business.

Dave Lancaster Talks SCCA Enduro, Neohio Updates & His Racing19 Feb 202200:40:55

Send us a text

Dave was our most listened to episode in our first season and he won races after being on the show.  Podcasts work folks!!   Learn more about Dave In Episode #9

Dave had a great 2021 racing in SRF.

  • 2nd in Great Lake Division (SR3)
  • 4th in a major at Mid-Ohio
  • 4th at Grattan
  • Wins at Nelson Ledges

He also raced in AER in the Junk Player Special at Mid-Ohio.

For 2022 Dave is planning to race four endurance races in Champcar and AER with the Junk Player Special team.  His SRF will get the new transmission package that these cars are using and he'll race one or two events at Mid-Ohio.

Dave wanted to talk more about the Neohio Region of the SCCA than his racing.  Typical Dave.

Dave and his program chairs have a full season planned.  They just finished up a big award ceremony. and will be on track in April at Nelson Ledges. The event that has the most interest for the 2022 season is the Enduro at Nelson Ledges.  Way too much to type out - take  a listen and learn more about all the great events happening in 2022.

Dan Schlosser & Eric Vukich - Pro Kart Concepts12 Feb 202200:56:46

Send us a text

Karting is where it starts for many racers so it only makes sense that we have two guests on this episode that are heavily involved in karting in the midwest.

Like many in our sport, family got them involved in motorsports.  At age six Dan started going to the Indy 500 and Eric's dad had a vintage car business and was dragged to Lernerville Speedway.

Dan's worked in the Motorsports industry for over 20 years first as writer, photographer and managing editor for TrackSide Online - an online content service provider working primarily in IndyCar. He also provided PR work for drivers and teams which lead me to a relationship with BeaveRun Motorsports Complex (now Pitt Race), where his kids raced karts.

Eric is a fan of start-ups and has been in karting since 2010.  He's just getting his four year old daughter into a kart and his two sons have raced karts for years.  Eric enjoys being at the track and supports PKC's goal to get more involved in motorsports.

Pro Kart Concepts was born out of a few opportunities.  Pitt Race's continued karting program growth, two new kart tracks being built in Ohio and an opportunity with the OTK brand.

PKC will provide karts sales, set-up, tuning , trackside support, arrive and drives, and consumables.  Coaching will be part of their offering as well.  These services are needed to grow a success karting program.  The goal is to keep their customers on track and out of the garage.

Although we talk about data, karting is simple.  It's all about getting on track, running laps and having fun.

Dan was asked what I want to people to learn from this episode he replied,  "I’d like to let people know that getting in to karting with their family is about making memories together that can’t be replicated. For a fortunate few it may result in a lifetime career but for all it’s a lifetime of memories. "

Michael Ribas, Professional Development Coach & Indy 500 Winning Mechanic06 Feb 202200:56:59

Send us a text

Can you believe that we have an Indy 500 winning race mechanic on the show?  Not only that though - he has an awesome background in motorsports which includes Penske's Indycar and IMSA programs, worked with Mario Andretti and Paul Newman, and graduated from the Jim Russell Racing School.

Michael Ribas gives us some great advice, "Show up,  work hard, and have a good attitude."  He applied that advice each and every day and he went from graduating from racing mechanic school to an exciting career in professional motorsports.

In case you didn't know, I'm a huge Roger Penske fan and Michael shares some insights about Roger's work ethic.

It's not all about hard work though - you have to have the opportunity as well.  Make the most of the opportunity!

We transition from Michael's motorsports background and talk about his coaching program.
More and more people are engaging with coaches whether it's for personal fitness, career growth, personal development, or getting better on the track.

I love this quote he gives, "It's for first time through for all of us."  Think about that.   This is where a coach can help.

Coaching isn't about giving you the answer, it's about helping you find it.

Michael shares a few ideas on steps you can take to set your goals.  What's the goal?   What do you want?  It's OK to think big, but be realistic.

We've all heard that writing down goals is important.  Michael wrote down that he wanted to win the Indianapolis 500.  17 years later he did!

Michael also shares a funny story about the Indycar movie, Driven.

Aaron Quine SCCA Trans Am, IGT Porsche Driver, and a Good Guy29 Jan 202200:48:29

Send us a text

We catch up with Aaron Quine at his race shop and learn more about his racing and motorsports career.  Aaron's story is another great example of how networking, being a professional, and looking for opportunities can pay off.

Like many of our guests, Aaron got the racing bug from his father who raced Corvettes and Aaron grew up at Mid-Ohio and Nelson Ledges.  In fact, his dad gave him some great advice, "Meet as many people as you can.  You help them and they'll help you."

Last year he won the Great Lakes series championship in TA2, started racing in the IGT series and won at Daytona.  It was his first time in a Porsche and went from 7th to 1st in the rain.

Aaron will be racing in SCCA's GT2 series, the IGT series, and SRO in 2022.

Aaron instructs and coaches at the Mid-Ohio School and the Ford Performance Racing School at the Charolette Motor Speedway.

Aaron's Corvette was featured in DEI's PRI Road Show - Here's the burnout!

Looking for race tires?  Check out Stupid Fast Tires.  His shop in Wadsworth can get your tires ready to go, but he also offers trackside services.  44 foot, gooseneck trailer, with four tire machines and four tire balancers.  They can handle it!  Also, he can help with your car's handling.  Aaron helps his clients better understand how tires can help their vehicle's on-track handling and performance.

Aaron shares news that there might be a Camping World NASCAR Truck race in his future.   This is another awesome example of networking.  Good luck Aaron!!

We learn about a scary coaching moment where a student didn't listen and they ended up on the roof.  Yikes!

Plus, check this out, Aaron's so cool that Summit Racing has a special Aaron Quine paint kit you can purchase.

Send us a text

If there's a lesson to be learned here it's, Say yes to any opportunity.

As you'll listen Andrew Rains has had a busy career in motorsports and he's still a young man.  From working at a performance auto shop to flying on a private jet with a Grand Am team as a pit crew member, Andrew has built a foundation for solid career in our sport.

While at Auburn University he was on the Formula SAE team and handled driving duties and was responsible for sponsorships.  This program connected with him his business partner and they realized the need for better and simpler data systems.

He's also a tenured professional coach and racer with wheel to wheel experience in the Pirelli World Challenge series (2015 -2017) and he raced a stock car for a year.  Andrew has taken the APEX Pro technology beyond motorsports to offer custom engineering and technology development services for entrepreneurs and companies with needs in the connected device space (Internet of Things) - see Moxieint link below.

Andrew also has worked at the Porsche Track Experience at Barber Motorsports Park and still offers coaching to drivers looking to get better.

The APRX Pro offers a free app for your iPhone and there's the APEX Pro Unit that provides better GPS data and gives real time, visual feedback.  There's an OBDII unit as well.

Andrew talks about getting stuck at the Canadian border while having his truck and trailer searched, selling a bunch of assets to buy the remains of the Grand Am team only to sell the cars a year later and then build a Honda Accord.  We also talk about coaching and how using a coach can save you money in the long run.

Setting tire pressures, alignments, and suspension settings all get discussed.  Dave's tire pressure tip - use white marker to highlight the tiny triangles on the shoulder of your tires to see if you are going past that point.  If you are, increase the tire pressure.  If you aren't close to the triangles, reduce the tire pressure.

Where to go for Miata advice and parts?  Talk with other Miata drivers at a track day and see who's running well.  Talk with them and see where they source their parts.

If you race your Miata be sure to check out the Mazda Motorsports website for .

Late To Grid: E27 - Reed Kryder Former IMSA & SCCA Racer - Driver Coach & Race Shop Owner23 Oct 202100:49:20

Send us a text

We sit down with Reed Kryder from Kryder Racing and boy did we learn a lot!  What a background!

Reed's a former IMSA and SCCA driver who now coaches aspiring racers and owns Kyder Racing which provides car set up services, offers an arrive and drive program, and builds cars for customers.

We talk about Reed getting his old GTU car back on track for a vintage race, Reed's background at Goodyear, and get his insights into better driving.  Reed is responsible for the Test & Tune events at Nelson Ledges Road Course which offers a street car day and race car day each month.

Reed's advice on getting better?
Work to get consistent and identify where your issues are (braking, knowing the apex, driving line, etc).  He also suggests running 4-6 laps, make adjustments and repeat.  Plus, he shares so much more!  Check your tires after a session - which are hotter?  Hotter tires are the ones that are sliding on the track.

Reed says, a lot of racing is passion - what's your passion?  Go and do that.

Late To Grid: E25 - Coyote Black - SCCA EP Racer & Passionate Motorsports Guy16 Oct 202100:58:46

Send us a text

Coyote was on the cover of Sports Car Magazine!

He's a Honda guy who started with a street car, joined SCCA, sold lots of his possessions, found a truck & trailer for $2500 and went to Summit Point and got his license.

He's a road racing driver in the SCCA Majors/ Super Tour/ Runoffs.  Sits on the Steel Cities Region Board of Directors- Outreach Committee.  Coyote is a Track Night in America Novice Coach and Pitt Race HPDE Coach.

In 2018 (first year of racing) was regional champ at Summit Point.

Coyote's been Rookie of the Year in two regions and in 2019 raced his first majors.  Plus he qualified for Runoffs in 2019.  He was top 9 in the Northeast in 2019.

2020 was kinda a mess, like it was for everyone.

2021 was off to a better start after a win at Summit Point.  Pocono was a DNF and then a 3rd place.  Racing at Pitt also had a DNF and at Watkins Glen had a tire blow out that resulted in a concussion and a lot of side damage.

He was actually finishing the car repairs at Indy during Runoffs.

2021 Runoffs had its up and downs.  During the qualifying sessions he was getting faster until the camshaft broke.  Bummer!  However, after finding a head and 10 hours of work he was back, ready to go.  He was the only FWD.  After going off in T4 he picked up gravel which made its way into the timing belt area and game over.  He was moving through the field too - going from 24th to 16th.

Coyote's advice to those that want to get into motorsports - just do it!

When it comes to resources Coyote recommends finding people who are winning in your same make and model car.  Ask them what they are doing.  What parts, what set up, etc.

Has Coyote bee late to grid?  The answer is yes and listen to find out where and when.

Late To Grid: E24 - Gabe Gutierrez - NASA AIX Driver & Advice Guru07 Oct 202100:53:59

Send us a text

What an advice filled episode!

Gabe Gutierrez attended a Cleveland Grand Prix with his brother and was hooked on racing and knew he had to get behind the wheel.  Juan Pablo Montoya was influential to him as well.  His wife purchased him a Stock Car Experience and we was hooked (an he blames her to this day)!

He started out doing lots of track days and he shares the story of leaving a wet Mid Ohio track day before the event was over.  He's taken vehicles to more than 10 racetracks in 7 different states around the country. He's participated in multiple endurance races including the 24 hours at Nelson Ledges.  Gabe's  taken every opportunity to learn as much as he can and introduce people to the sport.

Gabe's hosted track days through his company, GANAR racing and found the experience to be fun and rewarding.  He shares the story about helping get a new Porsche driver on track and that's what it's all about - sharing our sport and helping others.

When we were recording this Gabe was getting ready for NASA at Autobahn - we'll have to follow up and see how he did.

After we finished recorded he texted me and realized he didn't discuss finding a track mentor.  This is a great point!  If you want to get better find a mentor.  They can help with advise, support and share their experiences.  This will help in a big way!

Here's some great advice from Gabe:
Preparation is key for success. Having the car ready before the event weekend is really big and will allow for a “relax” weekend where time is spent driving instead of working on the car. I have a checklist of things to do before the event and during the event (after each session). I recently created a maintenance log to allow me to look back and be able to know exactly when I did something to the car.

Preparing the car is extremely important but it is also as important to prepare yourself. I make sure I have what I need during the weekend to be relaxed and stress free (ice, water, food, clothes, sunscreen, hat, etc.) I like to look at the weather at the tracks location to help me prepare for the weekend but take extra clothes just in case. Planning on resting is also very important to me specially during long trips, I plan my stops ahead of time and I know where I am going to park to sleep/rest.

Gabe is the king of checklists and documents!
He recommends having a checklist for the car, the trailer, and the truck.  He has a post season checklist and uses a spreadsheet for all maintenance items on his vehicles.  He even pre-plans his stops along the route to the track.   Might be the most organized guy we've had on!

During our recording he shared some additional advice:

  • Follow an HPDE progression path, like NASA's
  • Seat time is key
  • Keep the car stock as long as you can
  • Slow down, learn and hit your marks - you'll get faster
  • Take breaks while at the track - Fatigue is bad

Gabe suggested listening to our Episode on 7 Tips for Getting Ready For The Track.

What are Gabe's ideas on getting to grid?  He wants to be early.  It helps him mentally prepare.  He uses an alarm to remind him when to leave for grid.

Gabe recommends the following resources:
Facebook Groups (your type of car, the groups you run with, etc.)
Connect with companies involved with your model vehicle
Start learning how cars work (

Late To Grid: E22: Mike Puskar - Carbotech Brakes11 Sep 202100:42:06

Send us a text

We could have talked with Mike for hours!  Braking is such an important topic and Mike provides some great insights into what drivers and racers need to know about how to get great braking performance.

Mike started racing in 1982 and raced in the Playboy Escort series, he has two class wins in the Longest Day at Nelson Ledges Road Course and won the Kryder Cup.

Carbotech Brakes was born out of necessity.  A Corvette racer needed better braking options and started developing a friction material in his garage to give him the brakes he needed.  In 2006 Mike and his family bought the company and they have never looked back.

Carbotech's customer support is second to none.  Mike and his team are always answering questions and on many race weekends he's at the track helping clients.  They can even make one-off sets of pads based on what you need.

We talk about brake fade, bleeding brakes, torquing lug nuts, lubricating contact points and so much more.

This is a must listen episode!

Late To Grid: E21 - Mike Kubiak - SCCA Time Trails Racer 06 Sep 202100:39:37

Send us a text

Time Trials and Time Attack are hot topics these days so let's have another Time Trials racer on the show.

In this episode we have Mike Kubiak who is a third generation Corvette racer who truly grew up at Nelson Ledges Road Course.  At 12 years old he'd hop on the track after a race weekend and drive a manual transmission Camaro at 30 MPH!

Mike drives a 2003 Z06 in the Sport 2 Class in SCCA Time Trials events.  The car is mostly stock.

When Mike's not at the track he's working for Bridgestone developing tires for the OEs.

Mike shares some good advice including:
Watch YouTube videos prior to going to a new track - it's a great way to learn.
Nut & Bolt your car between events
Mentally run through the laps while sitting on grid

Here's what Mike brings to the track:
Bring a canopy for shade
Bring extra fuel
Extra tires
Water & Gatorade
Tools (not a full box, but a good set to get most things done)

If you are new to track days or Time Trials here's Mike's advice:
Get good brake pads and good brake fluid
Remove all items from your interior
Visual inspection
A good helmet
Leave the car alone - learn to drive and learn the tracks

Mike uses the Track Addict app and uses it with video to better understand where he can improve.

We also discuss the negative aspects to modding your car - which can put you into another class.  Be thoughtful in your selection of modifications.
