Bringing Toronto's transit, music, and cursed McDonalds to SXSW | Interview with BOXCUTTER Director Reza Dahya

samedi 8 mars 2025Duration 20:25

If The Weeknd and Drake can make it from Toronto, why can’t Rome?

BOXCUTTER reframes what Canadian greatness looks like for the next generation, filling a gap in Canadian film and setting the bar for Toronto storytelling. Through one day in the life of aspiring musician Rome, we see the true character of the city, the community that shapes it, and the threats of gentrification on the next generation of artists. Director Reza Dahya chats about translating Toronto’s textures for the big screen, letting community believe in you, and why deep cut references like the infamous Queen and Spadina McDonalds matter.

The IT-GIRL trend of 2025? Embracing MESS. | Meet Siaja (played by Anna Lambe) on CBC's NORTH OF NORTH

Season 1 · Episode 1

mardi 14 janvier 2025Duration 28:45

This episode is available to stream in 4K on YouTube

Is the internet in its messy era?

Take a look at the Billboard charts. DENIAL IS A RIVER by Doechii and MESSY by Lola Young are the biggest songs in the world, with lyrics about feeling like a walking contradiction and the plights of growing up in 2025.

It’s hitting different. Even IT-girls like Kylie Jenner, Issa Rae, and Sophia Ritchie are stamping their approval on with lip-syncs, viral dances and open mics.

Maybe we’re finally embracing the truth: behind every meticulously curated Instagram photo dump is a messy life. It’s raw, real, and worth celebrating.

That’s why I fell in love with CBC’s new smash-hit comedy NORTH OF NORTH, starring Anna Lambe (The Grizzlies, True Detective: Night Country) who plays a girl who is every girl:

“Siaja [is] a young Inuk woman who dreams of reinventing herself in her tiny Arctic community of Ice Cove, a town where everybody knows your business. After a spontaneous — and extremely public — exit from her marriage, Siaja finds herself navigating the unpredictable, and often hilarious, highs and lows that come with relationships, motherhood, a new job, and finding your way.”

CBC

A list of Siaja moments that made me go “yeah, that’s me” while watching the first two episodes:

* Trying not to cry parking your car while someone hot is watching

* Scream-singing Alanis Morisette in the car on the way to work

* Driving by your ex’s place to try and get your stuff back after a messy breakup

* Asking your friends if they think you’re a loser (spoiler: they don’t think that, they love you)

This list barely scratches the surface of relatable moments NORTH OF NORTH serves up, but they’re the moments I can give you without spoiling that moment in episode one*.

Enjoy this conversation with Anna Lambe. I’ll see you next time on LATE NIGHT SCROLLING

ProducerLiz

*The shock from THAT MOMENT rewired my brain to only be able to think about that moment for WEEKS after attending the premiere. After you watch, PLEASE come back to the comments and let me know if it shook you to your core, too.

Season 1 · Episode 6

jeudi 27 mars 2025Duration 44:16

Welcome back to a special edition episode of Late Night Scrolling!

Canadian Screen Award season is upon us with hundreds of nominations dropping this morning, and I break it all down for you (and have a few breakdowns in the process) in this episode:

* We deep dive into the snubs and heartbreaks, the nominations that made me cry and cheer, and the A-listers who should be booking flights to Toronto (looking at you, Jeremy Strong! You have a shot being nominated without Kieran around!)

* Our friends from now 4x Canadian Screen Award nominated digital show EVERYBODY’S MEG stop by to react to their nominations and talk about Season 2 about to go into production.

* We also talk about importance of supporting mid-budget Canadian projects (SIDELINED, I’m looking at you!) and the recurring patterns of top-nominated shows getting cancelled (Run the Burbs, yall deserved better).

Let me know what nominations you want to hear more about over the coming weeks!

I’ll be back next week to recap JUNOs weekend — make sure you watch the awards this weekend so we can debrief together next week!

Is STUTTERING the best Canadian Pop song ever?

Season 1 · Episode 5

mardi 25 mars 2025Duration 28:27

In 2025, this song is coming back with a vengeance as an example of the thread that connects Canadian pop culture together.

I’m of course, talking about Stuttering by Fefe Dobson.

Is this the best pop song in Canadian history? I certainly think there’s an argument to be made for it. So in this week’s episode, let’s dive into why Stuttering might be the best representation of Canadian pop culture — our relationships with apologies, each other, and our elbows-up energy to the world.

Enjoy this episode — and make sure to share it with friends!

Also — we’re in the Top 10 Entertainment News podcasts in Canada — WHAT?! — all because of YALL following on Apple Podcasts. THANK YOU for supporting this podcast and being part of the corner of the internet that cares a hell of a lot about Canadian pop culture.

SHARP CORNER interview with Nova Scotia icon Wayne Burns

Season 1 · Episode 9

samedi 26 avril 2025Duration 38:28

Welcome back to Late Night Scrolling!

Icon of stage and screen Wayne Burns joins me this week to, first and foremost, celebrate Aries season. The first time we met in person was at TIFF, at the premiere of SHARP CORNER which is now coming to theatres May 9. In this episode you’ll hear all about our crazy worlds-colliding red carpet moment, but you can watch it here

When I tell you Wayne is iconic, I mean Wayne is iconic. Two of his projects made waves at Canadian film fest, his new short EEL in post production, and film FAST LOVE soon to announce Toronto premieres and of course, SHARP CORNER.

We got real about how our Nova Scotian roots inform our work as producers and our province’s cinematic language — and no matter where you’re from, I think you’ll find the conversation cathartic. Everyone knows their hometown better than its misconceptions and headlines, and the beauty of film is that it captures those nuances and preserves them in time so we never forget what we’ve gone through. I loved this conversation and I know you will too!

Wayne’s gofundme for EEL is still live, you can check it out here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/eel-short-film-fundraiser?attribution_id=sl:95db8035-b10a-4fd8-863b-1dca4f2fb5a5&lang=en_US&utm_campaign=fp_sharesheet&utm_content=amp13_t1-amp14_c&utm_medium=customer&utm_source=copy_link and check out all of Wayne’s work at wayneburns.ca (we love a Canadian website domain!)

May is around the corner, and yall… we’re taking this show on the road. That’s right — we’re heading back to Toronto at the end of the month to meet up with friends and cook up some very special interviews ahead of the Canadian Screen Awards. I can’t wait for you to see what we’re cooking, get ready to EAT this month!

We’ll see you back next week!

* An argument in favour of giving Jack Quaid and Chad Michael Murray Canadian citizenship

* Stories from the red carpet we’ve NEVER shared on the internet

* Exposing our longstanding crushes on Jay Baruchel, and Becca using her theme park expertise (literally) to expllain how his voice came to be in the How to Train Your Dragon theme parks

Becca aka the FilmTripper is such an original creator, with a twist on pop culture that I SO respect and admire. She’s the real deal, and I know if you don’t already know her you’ll adore her as much as I do by the end of this episode!
