The Secret Is Out: The 19kg Theta Velomobile Shatters World Records!
06 Apr 2026
01:50:02
In this episode of the Laidback Bike Report, we go behind the scenes of one of the most exciting and secretive recent developments in the recumbent world: The Theta Velomobile. For months, a small team of 4 scientists and engineers in Germany worked in total silence, even hiding their Strava data to keep their project a secret from the "nosy folks" on the German Velomobile Forum. They decided to move beyond modifying existing designs like the DFXL to start with a completely clean slate. The result is a 19kg racing machine that didn't just meet expectations—it dominated. In its public debut at Aldenhoven, the Theta shattered the long-standing 4,000m world record and went on to set a new 24-hour relay record with an average speed of 64 km/h. In this interview, one of the designers-Julian Kraft-discusses:
-Lightweight Engineering: How the team achieved a race-ready weight of just 19kg. -The "Secret" Strategy: Why they kept the project hidden until the very last moment. -World-Class Testing: The transition from digital CFD simulations to real-world track testing and world record attempts. -Daily Utility vs. Racing: Why the Theta was designed not just for the track, but for day-to-day commuting and travel.
Whether you are interested in high-end aerodynamics, lightweight carbon fiber construction, or the thrill of world-record HPV racing, you won't want to miss this deep dive into the Theta Project.

Aerocoupe-Advanced Trike Design from the 1980's w Jeff Wills
09 Mar 2026
01:20:57
Step back in time to the "virtual free-for-all" of the early 1980s American recumbent revolution! In this episode we sit down with industry veteran Jeff Wills to uncover the forgotten history of the Aerocoupe—a pioneering human-powered trike born out of the Southern California HPV racing scene. Jeff shares incredible stories from the 1980 Speed Championships at Ontario Motor Speedway, where garage-built "missiles" and "streamliners" first challenged the traditional bicycle establishment. In this interview, you’ll discover:
The "No Rules" Era: How the IHPVA rose as a reaction to strict conventional racing associations.
Engineering the Aerocoupe: How Jeff and designer Mark Murphy used moped hubs, awning fabric, and sailplane-inspired chrome tubing to build a trike from scratch.
Lessons in "Dangerous" Design: Jeff gets candid about the "exciting" frame flex and "tank steering" that defined early prototypes.
The Legacy: A look at how these early experiments provided the DNA for the high-performance trikes we ride today.
In our second segment we interview the Spezi 2026 team. This year the world's largest recumbent bicycling event takes place in Freiburg, Germany. We'll find out all the details and highlights of this exciting event which we'll be attending in April.

From Vancouver, British Columbia we take a close look at the Veemo. This reasonably priced light electric vehicle is now backed by the large mobility company Envo who promise to bring this rider and climate friendly transportation to North America and the world. They are in it for the long haul.
Spezi 2025 is almost here so we sit down with the promoters to see what to expect this year at the world's largest recumbent event.
Our Swiss pal David Brandenberger is getting ready to continue his worldwide tour on the Solatrike. This trike and solar powered trailer rig has already been more than halfway around the world and is currently in Canada. David tells us about his amazing past travels and lets us in on his plans to continue his journey south this spring.

Adaptive Adventures Tour and New Trike Motor from the UK!
10 Mar 2025
01:34:57
Adaptive Adventures is an organization that provides freedom through mobility. They travel around the USA and beyond to serve thousands of disabled adults and children with challenge events in water sports, snow events and cycling. We visited them at their Colorado headquarters in January to learn more about how their recumbent cycling programs benefit people of all ages.
Next we meet Alex Pargeter the founder of Gride Solutions. They are a UK startup providing a new complete motor system for a wide variety of trike brands. They were on a dealer tour of the USA last month and we caught up with them in Gahanna, Ohio at the renowned recumbent shop Bicycle One.
Finally, our own Larry Seidman shares his thoughts on a selection of tire levers he's checked out. He'll evaluate and demonstrate some of them as he tries to keep the bleeding down to a minimum!

2 Wheel Bent Comeback with the Italian Designed Slyway!
03 Feb 2025
01:53:38
We've lamented the decline of the 2 wheeled recumbent bike over the last number of years on this webcast. The Cruzbike has been an exception and more recently Dana Lieberman's Bacchetta has reappeared on the scene. Today we talk to Stefano Bonazzoli in Italy where he is now promoting his beautifully designed Slyway Ultra carbon fiber bike. He tells us all about the 3 flexible versions of the bike and its design history. Lastly, Stefano shares his very creative ideas about how to elevate recumbent bikes into the mainstream.
Also joining us is Jason Livingston from Electric Bike Outfitters to talk about the various ways to add e-assist to your trike.
Finally, Wizwheelz CEO Mark Crews has an important announcement about the status of Cycle-Con for 2025.

Armin Ziegler has toured in many places around the world with his recumbent bikes, trikes and velomobiles. This Swiss adventurer has a well regarded collection of travel blogs that have entertained bent riders for many years. As with many velomobile riders he had been stopped by curious police a number of times always ending in a friendly chat and quick return to the road. This past May his Greek velomobile tour ended abruptly with a quite different police encounter. Armin was stopped, arrested and had his velomobile confiscated.
We talk to Armin about his love for bent travel, the stable of recumbents he maintains, and some of the places he's been. Then we delve deeply into his recent ill-fated tour of Greece. He explains what exactly happened, why he thinks he was singled out and the current legal status of his court case.

Steintrikes Go Solar Across the US then Help Vet Climb Mt. Washington!
21 Oct 2024
01:33:09
We have two incredibly inspiring stories that share a connection involving a Steintrike Wild One trike.
First up we talk to John Gunterman. John is a US veteran who was injured in the middle east. He talks about his journey of recovery, how Steintrikes have played a part in it and how he now is dedicated to helping others ride to health. Setting goals is a large part of John's plan and his focus is now on climbing the notoriously difficult Mt. Washington next spring on a Wild One. Where this trike will come from takes us to our second story...
Having set their own personal goal of promoting solar power and sustainability around the world, Megan and Polo created "The Green Journey". This young couple (an American woman and Frenchman) set out from Berkeley, California this summer on two electrified solar powered Steintrikes. They were attempting to become the first solar powered trikes to cross America. Along the way they met amazing people and shared their ideas on how to make the world a better place.

We have two bent riders who take off roading to a more comfortable place. Hezi Yismach is an Israeli bike designer and builder with a penchant for innovation. Richard Ehrlich rides his custom built off road bents where even mountain bikes are challenged. This Canadian adventure rider is even competitive in many of the racing events he enters. We will learn about these amazing guys and then engage our panel in a discussion of bikes, trikes and the future of recumbent off road riding.
The Icarus Cup event is a pure human powered flight event at Manston Airport in Kent, England. Our British Human Powered Club correspondent Barney Harle was there this past June and delivers a fascinating report.
Trident trikes has a new children's trike called the "Half Pint". Owner Tom Flohr was kind enough to ship me a loaner this summer so we could do a review. My grandkids unboxed, assembled and test rode it so we could evaluate it from a kids perspective.

Bents Battle for Sun Trip 2024 Victory-Jack Butler Interview!
08 Jul 2024
01:52:19
A solar panel above and a small electric motor on the wheel of his AZUB Six bike was all the assistance Jack Butler needed to become this year's Sun Trip Champion. The Englishman battled former champ Frances Jean-Marc Dubouloz who rode a WAW velomobile on a fiercely contested route from Lyon, France to the Sahara Desert in Morocco and back. Jack tells us all about his adventure racing history, the two wheeled bent he now loves and the highlights of this year's nip and tuck race to the finish line.

Young Upright Ultra Racer Now Breaking Records on Cruzbike!
16 Feb 2026
01:47:48
What happens when a young upright bike racer makes the switch to recumbents?
In this episode of the Laidback Bike Report, we’re joined by Matthew Lefthand. For Matthew, the transition wasn't just about finding a more comfortable seat—it was about finding a new way to satisfy his competitive drive and improve his longevity on the circuit.
Matthew takes us through his evolution from overweight couch potato to the world of upright bike ultra racing and now to discovering the speed and efficiency of recumbents. We discuss the learning curve of racing in a new position, the gear that keeps him competitive, and how the recumbent community has embraced his racing spirit.
In this interview, we specifically dive into:
How Matthew's professional background in psychology helps him persevere.
His decision to lose weight and get active again.
Why he started biking and his early experiences in ultra racing.
How he was introduced to Cruzbike and its racing culture.
The technical and physical differences between racing upright vs. laid back.
His advice for other competitive cyclists considering the switch.
If you’ve ever wondered if you can still "go fast" after making the move to a recumbent, Matthew’s journey is the perfect proof that the finish line looks just as good from a recumbent seat.

The New Face of European Velomobiles in America-Northland Velo!
14 Apr 2024
01:35:40
Buying a European velomobile in America has been fraught with poor selection/availability, shipping disasters and minimal expert guidance. Ben Parke has worked very hard over the last year to change all that with his new Minnesota dealership called Northland Velo. Ben's close business connection with Romanian based Velomobile World is bringing a wide range of models to his customers at discounted prices. We talk to Ben about the "shipping container load" quantities he is bringing in which he hopes will finally allow for scaling this business to new levels.
The world's largest recumbent show is returning to Germany soon and so is the Laidback Bike Report. We sit down with Franz, Gabriel and Florian (the Spezi producers) for a peek at the planned program and exciting new changes they have planned for this year.
This event only got its start a few years ago but the Pacific Trike Fest is returning to Portland, Oregon in June. Recumbent PDX is the force behind this fun gathering and Mel Birge joins us on the road riding his own Catrike to tell us all the amazing details.

Catrike Factory Tour Event 2024-Trikes Made in the USA!
11 Mar 2024
01:36:36
Florida in February is not a bad place to visit! When general manager Mark Egeland invited us to tour the factory floor of Catrike in Orlando last fall at Cycle-Con we jumped at the opportunity. Tray and I were given free range to roam the facility and interview anyone we wished. This was during their "Factory Event" so we got to see lots of Catrike owners and hear from Founder Paulo Camasmie as well. We follow the progress a new trike would take right down the production line from welding to painting to packaging and interview the team at their individual stations along the way. I think you'll find the process fascinating.
The Big Honkin' Trike Rally was becoming an annual pilgrimage for bent riders across the country when the powers that be threw a liability wrench into the organizer's plans this year. Not to be beaten, they pivoted to a more open source approach and turned this into an informal BBQ and ride format along the Withlacootchee trail in Inverness, Florida this year. We attended the BBQ, met many of the trikers and interviewed Gay Ormiston Bradford who has been involved from the start.
If you're looking for advice on unraveling the many trike choices available both electric and not-look no further! Andrew and Gary from Trailside Trike in Floral City, Florida show us 10 models they rolled out behind the bike shop right along the trail. You'll get their expert opinion on the pros and cons of various Catrike, Greenspeed, Terratrike, Trident and AZUB units for your consideration.

Velomobile World Factory Tour/Cruzbike Museum and More!-Larry Oslund
05 Feb 2024
01:34:21
Larry Oslund joins us from his Hilton Head headquarters to talk about his recent trip to Romania and his video tour of the Velomobile World factory. He takes us all around the facility then shows us a close up view as his personal Bülk is being built on the floor. Larry is now a Velomobile World dealer and is offering velos along side Cruzbikes for test rides and sales. Another of Larry's passions is ultra racing. We talk about his personal accomplishments and his new forays into resurrecting failed races around the country starting with Sebring and Calvin's Challenge. Last year Larry built a massive addition to his house to make room for the Cruzeum. This large structure over his garage now houses over 30 historical Cruzbikes and Cruzbike paraphernalia. We have a look at this new room as we talk to Cruzbike founders Maria and Jim Parker who join Larry for our final chat segment.

Velomtek Now in USA and Carbontrike Back in Business!
08 Jan 2024
02:07:16
Manufactured in Montreal the VT1 velomobile from Velomtek is in production and is now available to buyers in the USA. CEO Francois Garneau gives us a close up look at this amazing vehicle then shares the details of their process for purchasing via pickup or delivery.
Lars Viebke started Carbontrike in Sweden years ago before entering into a collaboration with Bacchetta in 2018. Fast forward past Bacchetta's sale and split up into bike and trike business, covid complications and visa nightmares and today Lars is back up and running in Florida. He brings us up to date on this exquisite carbon fiber trike and his plan for sales and development in the future.
The Florida Senior Games were held in December and bents were very well represented in the biking category. Our own Larry Seidman brings us his report on the riders and results from the competition in the Sunshine State.

Aussie Mark Doble read on BROL that some American velonauts were planning on being the first to cross Australia in a velomobile. This got his competitive and patriotic juices flowing and he thought "Screw you Yanks you'll not be the first to do this in my country!!" So the planning began for an epic crossing of the continent "down under" in the Australian built Rotovelo.
Next, our own Tray Bourgoyne and wife Lisa have been working hard on an in depth review of the just released new trike from HP Velotechnik known as the Delta Tx. You'll see it on the trail, on the road and in Tray's workshop. He details all the features and specs to let us know why this e-assisted trike might be best suited for you.

Tig Cross has been working on the Electrom for almost 8 years. Now in limited production he hopes to one day make his dream of a 2 wheeled light electric recumbent come true. He believes this bike has advantages that will make it a true "car replacement" option in the future.
Our own Larry Seidman participated in two senior games events last month. He was excited to see some other recumbent riders at the Huntsman Senior Games in Utah and the Nevada Senior Games as well. He tells us about the events, venues and the racers involved making it clear that more of us should join in the fun.
Sports Director Denny Voorhees is back with a report on a couple of interesting endurance races including the Natchez Trace 444. Our pal Larry Oslund features prominently in this report along with a few other bent racers.

Graham Browne's long career in digital design has included work with Jaguar, Dyson and Bentley. In the last few years his thoughts and efforts have turned to more low cost zero emission projects. By 2020 he had formed Northern Light Motors and developed a prototype light electric vehicle which has now gone into production in northern England. His intended market is more aimed at a cool and compelling car replacement than a screamingly fast racing machine. We talk to Graham about his company and ideas and then to our UK correspondent Barney Harle. Barney travelled to NLM headquarters, test rode the velo and regales us with his review.
Next up is a look at the German Varitrike. This unusual arm and leg powered front wheel drive trike showed up at Cycle-Con 2023 with owner Dave McHenry. We show you his fun demo in the parking lot followed by a more in depth interview with Varibike CEO Martin Kraiss.
Lastly, from our LBR Review Team, Nina Paley had a chance to ride the e-assisted Ti-Fly X 26. She assembled then tested the trike both on and off road around her central Illinois location. You will be entertained as well as educated by this wonderful segment.

Harpia Velomobile: Speed, Style, and Engineering with Brazilian Designer Paulo!
12 Jan 2026
01:24:51
What does it take to design a world-class velomobile from the ground up? From Brazil, we talk to the designer himself, Paulo, to discuss the engineering, aerodynamics, and passion behind the Harpia. We go from the initial sketches to the open road and do a dive deep into the build process. Finally, we examine the challenges of velomobile production in South America and what's next for this incredible machine.
Catrike just changed the game for mixed-terrain riders. We interview the experts at Bicycle One in Gahanna, Ohio to see how the All Road stacks up against the competition. Don't miss this breakdown of features, how to add e-assist and ride quality.

Bentrider (formerly known as Bentrider Online) is now new and improved thanks to new owner Kurt Reynolds. Having previous experience on nuclear submarines and now working for Microsoft he just might have what it takes to take this well loved recumbent message board to the next level. Kurt talks to us about buying the website from our old pal Bryan Ball, what he's done to improve the board and gives us a bit of a tutorial so we can all make the most of our experience.
Next up is a young German velonaut who overcame a ridiculous number of obstacles to ride and finish this year's TransAm Bike Race from Oregon to Virginia. Fortunately for us he decided to then turn around and head west in his prototype Milan RS to race at Battle Mountain, Nevada. On his way he stopped here in Ohio for a couple of days so I took advantage and did an extended interview with this impressive young rider/builder.
Lastly, we present an update on the Mississippi River Tour of our good pal Jon Hodkin aka Innertuba. My wife and I journeyed west to the Illinois/Iowa border and the Quad Cities area to catch up with him. He has been playing and riding his trike/trailer rig all the way up the river from Louisiana since March. We learn about the charitable work he's doing along the way, hear about his concerts and watch him lead a trike entourage over a bridge on the great river itself.

We are on the road in Brno, Czech Republic and Prievaly, Slovakia where we tour the Katanga facility and Composite Products in one day. At Katanga we get a look at the CAD designs of their upcoming light electric vehicle called the VM45, building the WAW velomobile and Pony 4 quad in the workshop and a peek at the Velove cargo platform they collaborate on. Hijinks ensue when Tray and I hop on the quads for a test ride.
Then it's on to Slovakia where Alan from Composite Products gets us up close and personal to their fiberglass, Kevlar and carbon fiber process all taking place in an old firehouse.
HP Velotechnik hinted at a new trike while we were at Spezi this year. Now they've officially announced the DeltaTX a real departure from the tadpole trikes they have long been known for. Heiko Truppel, their marketing director takes us through the story behind this new product and we take a close look at the trike itself.
Finally, we have a profile of a very highly regarded and unusual trike shop in Portland, Oregon known as Recumbent PDX. Husband and wife owners Mel Birge and Janet Morgan take us on a test ride and talk about the shop, its crew and the philosophy behind their Catrike Megastore.

In this episode, we're joined by Ron Thompson, Jon Hodkin, and the guys from Wolf and Wolf to discuss the G4 Racer, the Innertuba project, Spezi 2023, and the latest Recumbent.news.
Ron Thompson is a recumbent bicycle engineer/designer who believes a low profile arm power assisted front wheel drive bike can transform human powered racing. His G4 Racer headlines a line of two wheeled bents he intends to bring to market.
Jon Hodkin is bringing his Innertuba project back to America this spring with an ambitious trike and tuba trailer tour up the entire length of the Mississippi River. He has found a friend in recumbent advocate Nick White who is helping him find gigs with school bands and professional bands all along the way. With logistical help from Pat Franz of TerraCycle and Dave Hendricks from Connecticut Yankee Pedaller this is shaping up to be an epic journey.
The guys from Wolf and Wolf are now in charge of Spezi, the highly regarded "special bike" event. They talk about all the changes and what you need to know if you plan to attend this celebration of bikes, trikes, velomobiles and all sorts of innovation on wheels.
Honza will also join us with all the latest Recumbent.news of the month.
This is a must-watch episode for anyone interested in recumbent bicycles, human powered racing, or innovative transportation.
Tadhole Trike-Improbable Vehicle of a Veteran's Dream
06 Mar 2023
02:00:58
South African Border War veteran Stan Potgieter suffered severe injuries both physical and psychological in the 1980s. He has struggled ever since to regain the promise of a healthy and settled life. Stan talks to us about his continuing attempts to overcome PTSD as well as leg and back problems. He is now doing so by riding a custom trike derived from a friend's idea for a motorized golf trike called the Tadhole. Stan is dreaming big as he hopes to join in a ride with veterans in America from coast to coast raising awareness of veterans issues everywhere.
Travels by Trike's Sylvia Halpern is back with us to lay out the details of her impending solo trike ride across the USA with a newly updated Myrtle. She is joined by Heiko Truppel from HP Velotechnik in Germany to talk about their support for her including a new frame for Myrtle. We'll find out how you can follow her intrepid journey and even join her ride when she comes to your town.
Terracycle has long been known and loved as a quality supplier of accessories for recumbent bikes and trikes. Pat Franz has been the face and is the founder of the company since the mid 90s. He recently announced his retirement and the transition of the company's leadership to the younger but well experienced crew members Quintin Pruett and Caz Covert-Keefe. We sit down with all three of them and talk about the past, present and future of this venerable organization.

Our panel includes Doug Davis (bent shop owner/electrical engineer) with a primer on how batteries work, Jay Townley (bicycle industry journalist and regulatory expert) on fire stats and regulation and Steve Hansen (Bike Lawyer) on best insurance and legal choices for bent riders.
We also have a profile of Zach Kaplan owner of the California recumbent shop that bears his name. Zach has over 100 double century rides under his belt and has an interesting and deep history with bents going back to the 90s.

Recumbent bikes and trikes are quite different from their upright brethren and so often require unique add-ons. Filling this need since the mid 90s has been the Dutch company Radical Design. We talk to owner Kyra Ottens and product designer Roman Schaffroth to discuss the history, products and how those amazing bags are designed and manufactured.
As the northern hemisphere plunges headlong into the winter season we thought it was the perfect time to have a look at best practices for bent riding in cold weather. Who better to help us than former Hostel Shoppe mechanic Scott Christopherson? Scott still lives in northern Wisconsin and tells us how he prepares for triking in snow and ice.
Denny updates us on some cancelled ultra races and shares a couple more bent friendly ones that are coming up. Honza joins us with the latest recumbent news and we have a sad viewer submission where you can help a family with a no longer needed child's hand trike.

Ever since the UCI banned recumbents from their races the controversy about the fastest bike configuration has raged. Ron Thompson is a mechanical engineer who has devoted considerable time working on this issue. He has designed, built and raced the Generation 4 (G4) recumbent bike. This work has encouraged him to conduct a scientific speed trial of 10 bike configurations both bent and upright to determine what can be learned about their inherent benefits and drawbacks.
I was contacted by Jared Parseghian about his company Parbikes. They sell side-by-side recumbent tandem quadricycles. He invited my wife and me up to Toledo, Ohio for a look and a quick test ride on a beautiful autumn morning. We are veteran bent tandem riders but this was our first time pedaling right next to one another.
Nina Paley was our guest at the LBR booth at Cycle-Con 2022. She took advantage by test riding everything she could get seat time on. Denny Voorhees grabbed a trike and our 360 camera to accompany her on Friday afternoon. Nina gives us her thoughts about riding the Carver Ti-Glide, Steintrike Wild One and the HASE Kettwiesel.
Lastly, we have a viewer submission from Shawn Greener a US military vet. We see excerpts of his YouTube video from the Honor the Warriors annual ride in Charlotte, NC.
This year is the 25th Anniversary of one of the most highly respected recumbent manufacturers in the world. This past autumn AZUB Recumbents held a successful celebration event in the Czech Republic right in their home city, Uhersky Brod. Since the excitement has by now calmed down we thought it was a perfect time to sit down with the founders. CEO Aleš Zemánek shares some great stories of the origin of the company, its guiding philosophy, the challenges they experienced over the years and where they are headed today. Joined by marketing director Honza Galla, we also hear his take on everything including some wild stories and experiences. After the interview Aleš and Honza will be with us live to respond to your questions and comments along with special guest Matt Galat of Ja Yoe fame!

Can InnerTuba pull off his most ambitious tour to date? Our pal Jon Hodkin has been planning to ride the length of the Mississippi south to north since his last American tour. That was his triumphant ride across Iowa during RAGBRAI in 2019. We catch up with Jon in Cornwall, England at the ICE Trike facility and chat with he and ICE's Patrick Selwood about the tour, ICE's support for him and the kit he will use to accomplish his goals.
Next we have the co-directors of the World Human Powered Speed Challenge Al and Alice Krause talking all about the details of the upcoming race at Battle Mountain. We learn about the history, rules, track, timing, launch and catch of the event. We also find out about those famous hats given as trophies.
Heiko Truppel from HP Velotechnik shows us their latest electric version of their two wheeled bent known as the Speedmachine. He also shows us the electric updates recently added to the Scorpion and Gekko trikes.
Larry Seidman interviews Paralyzed Veteran of America rider Paul Kilgore about an off-roading race in Crested Butte, Colorado last month. The ADAPTIVE MOUNTAIN BIKING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP is a grueling 3 day event with many trikers and hand cyclists having overcome many obstacles before and after the days of racing.
Honza shares the recumbent news with us including the death of the legendary Mike Burrows.

Battle Mountain Nevada's World Human Powered Speed Challenge attracts bike designers worldwide every year. These creative builder/racers bring their best designs to this 5 mile section of desert road vying for speeds of 70, 80 or even 90 miles per hour. We look in on one of these teams in the UK working on their "Seventy-seven" project. Russell Bridge and Barney Harle lay out the history and progress of their bullet shaped streamliner which they hope to race to glory at this event. Tray and I will update their story when we see them in person at Battle Mountain next month!
Next it's on to Orlando, Florida where we meet up with George. He has made some amazing coroplast bodies for his ICE Adventure and HPV Scorpion trikes. He'll explain the how and why of his years long obsession with these artistic plastic fairings. Then Nina shows off her latest bent acquisition: a laidback gravel grinder!
Honza will join us for the bent news and we'll finish up with a patriotic parade in our Viewer Submission segment.

West Point Veteran Caleb Cline Trikes to 10 World Records!
13 Jun 2022
02:18:56
Caleb Cline was hurt leading his Army unit in a training exercise. We feel privileged to sit down with him to talk about his long road back to mental and physical health. That road included riding his trike to 10 new world records last April. Next we check in with our old pal AD Carson, founder of Recycled Recumbents. AD tells us about his show room rehab projects, the state of 2 wheeled bents, advice to families for disposal of your bents from the estate and his latest tour. Then we move on to Tray Bourgoyne's workshop where he shows us how to clean bike parts with ultrasound and some trike wheel maintenance. Larry Ploetz returns this month to inform us on best practices for velomobile touring and upkeep. We'll finish off with sports news on the significant bent participation in the recent National Senior Games. Plus a bonus video from Honza and Matt Galat announcing the new collaboration between AZUB and the Ja Yoe Nation YouTube channel.

New North American Velomobile Manufacturer-Velomtek!
02 May 2022
02:07:49
1) With the factory established and production team hired Francois Garneau shares the story of Velomtek. Production of this reasonably priced velomobile is underway in Quebec and plans are to expand sales to the USA and, eventually, Europe.
2) Tray Bourgoyne takes us step by step on his installation of a Tongsheng TSDZ2 electric assist motor on his HP Velotechnik Scorpion. If you have wondered about what is involved in such a DIY project your answers are in Tray's garage!
3) Remember that amazing Doug Davis velo chase down video we featured last month (https://youtu.be/LXitJ_ljC5A)? That was Peruvian national women's champion Alessandra Dávila Rodriguez. Doug checks in with her in Peru and gets her thoughts on racing behind and in velomobiles and riding recumbents in general.
4) Nina Paley is back with the amazing tale of her beloved Frosty (the Mango velomobile) who recently underwent some mechanical intensive care in Wisconsin. Larry Ploetz was the fixer and he explains what he did to bring Frosty back to life.
4) We finish with a tribute to Ken Poindexter (founder of Bentrider Nation) who recently lost his battle with cancer.

We explore the exciting world of wind powered land racers with bent rider Mark Harris. He has raced his land boats for over 30 years and witnessed competitive speeds over 120 mph. Next we're joined by recumbent seat craftsman BJ Strass. He shows us the equipment and techniques he uses to repair and upgrade your old bent seats. Finally, professor Craig Cornelius returns to discuss how bents have been configured and designed in the past and where they may go in the future. Honza and Denny report the news and sports as always.

Triker Kidnapped/Held Captive for 20 Months-Nicola Chiacchio
11 Jan 2022
02:10:06
Nicola dreamed of touring Africa since he was a little boy in Italy. In 2018 he began touring near the western coast on his wide tired AZUB trike and trailer. Along the way he met amazing and generous people who gave him food and shelter. Then in early 2019 he ignored the warnings of local officials and rode off on the road to Timbuktu. Then next thing he knew he was looking at automatic weapons pointed at his face. He was blindfolded and abducted via motorcycle. Thus began his nearly 2 year captivity ordeal. We learn about it all and find out how this experience has changed him.
Next we talk to Daniele Gonano from France. I met him a few years ago at a German Spezi event. He was displaying his solar powered tilting trike at the "Inventors Tent". Daniele is a veteran of the 6500 mile annual Sun Trip tour which includes riders of solar powered e-bikes riding across Europe and Asia. We'll hear about all that and his latest project-a tilting velomobile.
Of course we'll have our news director Honza Galla with the latest in recumbent activities, our Review Team member Tim Segard has a look at the HP Velotechnik Streetmachine bicycle and Peter Stull will share his thoughts about the historic Pharobike Low Fat low racer by Dan Duchaine.

Wally Swarchuk took 16 years to design and build his dream . This retired geography teacher from Canada began with no skills or experience in building bikes. He taught himself to weld and experimented with many prototypes before coming up with his current Tilt4orce Velocar. We hear his incredible story and then have our old friend Dr. Craig Cornelius evaluate this project using his many years of experience building his own tilting trikes.
Finally, our own bent triathlete Larry Seidman gives us a report from the 2025 Senior Games held near Des Moines, Iowa last summer.

Is it possible that you're illegally riding that Catrike, Terratrike. or even Cruzbike on the streets of America? It turns out to be a very difficult legal question fraught with insurance and financial implications. Doug Davis chats with legal experts Charlie Thomas, Steve Magas and Steven Hansen about laws excluding some 2, 3 or 4 wheeled bents from riding our roads. It's a real problem and makes touring a potential nightmare. Next is a segment on the best approach to buying and selling a used bent. I talk to Chris Ferguson and Steve Wood who each moderate a popular Facebook classified group for recumbents. They and our own Larry Varney (representing BentRider Online Classifieds) will discuss all the dos and don'ts involved along with our very experienced panel. Also, Larry Varney and I were invited up to Grand Rapids, Michigan where we had two days to put the new Spyder-TerraTrike's speed machine-through its paces. If you had previously thought you'd never hear the words "TerraTrike" and "speed machine" in the same sentence watch on and be amazed. Finally, we'll have Honza and Denny with the Recumbent News and Sports respectively. 00:00:00 Intro 00:00:50 What’s on Today’s Show 00:02:48 Panel Introduction 00:06:20 Sponsor Introduction 00:07:50 Recumbent News in 5 with Honza Galla 00:16:15 Doug Davis-Legal Labyrinth of Riding Recumbent in America 00:21:27 Legal Expert-Steven Hansen 00:40:15 Legal Expert-Charlie Thomas 00:48:54 Legal Expert-Steve Magas 00:58:40 Doug Davis-Summary and what our viewers can do to help 01:15:35 Advice for Buying/Selling your Bent-Ferg FB Recumbent Trikes & Bikes Classified 01:23:30 Best Advice for Buying and Selling your Bent-Steve Wood FB Recumbent Classifieds 01:33:00 Best Advice for Buying and Selling your Bent-Larry Varney BentRider Online 01:43:08 Review Team-TerraTrike Spyder and ATC trikes-Larry Varney 01:55:10 Peter Stull stuffs two Performer trikes and more in a van. 02:00:20 Denny Voorhees-Sports Report 02:03:00 Sponsor Thanks 02:04:40 Coming up next month 02:05:38 Goodbye to panel and crew

Have you ever been rolling so fast on your bent that you imagined pulling back on the handlebars and taking to the skies? Today we talk about just that with our pal Barney Harle from the British Human Power (Flight) Club. He reports on the state of flying using only pedal power from his experience at the Icarus Cup event where competition pushes innovation of these flying machines.
Next we visit with mechanical engineer and author Steve Nurse in Australia. Steve has written a wonderful book called "Cycle Zoo" which is mostly about recumbents and why you should be riding and maybe building your own. We have a few of Steve's books to give away during the webcast so join us live if you can!
For our third featured guest we head back to the UK and meet Alex Baines-Buffery. Alex is just an ordinary guy wanting to build something comfortable and fast for fun and commuting. He'll introduce us to "Frank" a 2 wheeled wooden bent he created and share his thoughts on his results.
From our regular panelists we have segments from Peter Stull folding a Linear bike into a Honda Odyssey and our velo guru Josef Janning shows how he uses a Radical Design trailer with his velomobiles. Honza will be along with the recumbent news of the month as always.

We're excited to have Dr. Craig Cornelius with us to take a wider look at tilting trikes. We've had quite a few tilters on the webcast over the last few months so I've brought in an expert to share an overview/summary of this cutting edge engineering realm. Craig is the Principal Researcher at HPTS (Human Powered Transportation Systems) who has been involved in the design and development of prototype human-power assisted vehicles for commuting and recreation for over 40 years. Our other segments this month include Honza Galla with the news, Peter Stull with his suggestions for the optimum way for transporting your bent, Tim Segard reviewing the Cruzbike S40, and Nina Paley on her recent experience riding an e-assisted Greenspeed Magnum in Michigan. We finish up with lots of Sports. Denny will have Mike Mowett talking about the recent HPRA races in Waterford, Michigan, Larry Seidman talks about bent participation in the Nebraska Senior Games and bring us up to date on upcoming bent friendly events.
