Rising Star: ESPN's Kristen Shilton on Nick Robertson and Leafs Season Preview02 Oct 202400:35:29

We are now just over a week away from the Leafs opener on October 9th. Before we get there though the Leafs have some decisions to make and we’re going to get into all that and more in this episode!

We get the show rolling with a discussion about the upcoming NHL season, focusing on the league's recent rule changes. Then we have a special Preseason edition of the Ladies Talkin' Leafs Highlight Reel where we give kudos to the Coach and note some key improvements on specialty teams and on the back end.

Then for the Third Period, we welcome a special guest, ESPN's Kristen Shilton, as she shares her insights on player development, particularly Nick Robertson's potential impact on the team, as well as her predictions for the Leafs season ahead, and what she misses most about the Leafs beat.

Right now the Buds are enjoying a little bit of bonding time in Bracebridge Ontario before they come back to finish off the Preseason schedule against Detroit. This week will no doubt end with some key questions answered, as the team makes their final cuts to reveal their 2024/25 roster. No matter what the ultimate tweaks are, success will come down to the performance of those with the most familiar faces, once again full of potential and promise. Can't wait! Go Leafs Go!

Welcome Coach Berube! The Ladies Give Their FANalysis of the New Hire and Explore What's Next for the Maple Leafs22 May 202400:48:42

The Leafs have a new head coach and we’re going to give our thoughts on the hiring of Craig Berube and what’s next on the to-do list for GM Brad Treliving!

We start off this episode, looking at Craig Berube, the former player, and coach, as well as the potential changes that may come under his leadership. To that end we explore a couple of trade possibilities involving players that may no longer fit the new mold like Timothy Liljegren, Nick Robertson and possibly also Mitch Marner.

For the Third Period we revisit an interview with Damien Cox, who emphasizes the difference between fan expectations and the business side of success. We also touch on the impact of new CEO Keith Pelley and his focus on stability and unity within MLSE. Overall, our conversation highlights the need for the Leafs to make strategic moves to improve the team, laying the ground work to finally get the Buds over the hump en route to the ultimate goal of winning the Stanley Cup.

The wheels are already in motion, with likely much more to come and we'll be keeping you posted all summer long. Be sure to follow and subscribe so that you don't miss an episode! We'll be back to our regular schedule with our next show on June 5th. 'Till then Go Leafs Go!

No Season Like the Off Season08 Oct 202000:47:53

The falling leaves, and brisk air of October normally signals the start of a new NHL season. This year, as we know, is unlike any other. Instead of getting ready for the games to begin, we said goodbye to last Season—awarding the Stanley Cup barely a week ago.

Fortunately, the Off Season brings the potential for its own fireworks, which means we’ll have lots of off ice action to look forward to. First up, the NHL Entry draft. We’ll recap what Dubas and Co. did in the first round, which happened mere moments ago. Then, we’ll have an update on new signings, additions to the coaching staff and give our impressions of what may come with free agency. To wrap we have exciting podcast updates to share. Bundle up, and settle in. We’re in for one heck of an Off Season!

Happy Anniversary!02 Sep 202000:45:39

Happy Anniversary to us! Officially it’s on September 5th so, we are a few days early, but we need to keep things organized for our listeners--who are most important--and publish on our normal release day, the first Wednesday of the month.

In this special episode, we'll give our thoughts on the Kapanen deal.

We'll also take a longer look at some of the media availability comments after the qualifier and beyond, from Shanahan and Dubas, and discuss the direction we'd like to see the team go in terms of roster construction and moves. Dubbie ain't done yet!

In addition, we take a snapshot of our current player contracts (UFA, RFA and International), so LeafsNation can all keep tabs together on who may stay and who may go.

And finally, our BIG Anniversary Contest Announcement. Be sure to listen to the end to find out if you are our Winner!!

Post Mortem of a Pandemic Qualifier13 Aug 202000:31:49

As the season goes, so the Qualifying Round goes. The Ladies left off last time--after the high of game 2, not knowing what to expect or what was to come. No one could've anticipated the miraculous high and the gut wrenching lows that were games 3,4 and 5. No shows, crazy comebacks and questionable choices, we deconstruct it all, and offer a little solace too, as we hunker down for yet another inordinately long off season.

League Update, Leafs News and an Inside Scoop03 Jun 202000:47:26

Still sheltering at home, and waiting for hockey, but with the turn of the calendar comes a light at the end of a very, very long tunnel—sort of. May’s close brought some news and details for the NHL return to play, and while things are mostly quiet in Leafland, there’s still work ongoing to improve our team. A Big Year for Women in the Game, Leaf Talk and the Survey Says...06 May 202000:47:15

Full on isolation mode with no NHL hockey for almost 8 weeks. No worries, because Chris and Syl have so much to talk about!  More and more women are getting high profile roles in hockey.  In the past 9 months we've seen the hiring of the first female GM of a professional men's hockey team, the hiring of the first female pro-scout for an NHL team and the first female referees/officials working the NHL Rookie Tournament.  Of course, we also have some Leaf talk with our thoughts on the signings of Barabanov and a couple of AHL depth players, contract talk with Zach Hyman and Freddie Andersen, and a review of a Leafs Fan Survey by James Mirtle of The Athletic.  We give you our answers and debate some of the more interesting survey questions.  With no games in sight for a while, we hope we can fill some of the void, and lift a bit of the boredom many of us fans are feeling.

Are Changes Really Coming to the Maple Leafs? LTL Insider Mike Augello Says We'll See15 May 202401:04:18

It’s just over a week since the Leafs lost Game 7 to the Boston Bruins.  A very familiar outcome, and we knew there would be a lot of news coming out of this playoff exit and so here we are with an extra episode!

In this bonus Third Period instalment, we welcome back LTL Insider Mike Augello to discuss the Leafs latest playoff exit, and the fallout, as we head into another early off-season. We get his thoughts on everything from the end of season player comments, including Mitch Marner's remarks, to an analysis of Sheldon Keefe's firing as head coach, as well as debate potential replacements.

The conversation then shifts to the Maple Leafs' post season media availability featuring Keith Pelley, Brendan Shanahan, and Brad Treliving, and together we wonder whether changes are finally coming to the team, and we look at the possibility of trading one of the core and whether its time for a new captain. One things for sure, MLSE has got to get the coaching decision right! We wrap up our chat with Mike by getting his thoughts on the the remaining NHL playoff series and who he is watching, as well as get his final Stanley Cup picks.

While there is lots of apprehension here in Leaf Land, there is still a Toronto hockey club having great success in the Playoffs. Yes, the PWHL playoffs are still ongoing and Toronto has a chance to head to the final! We're so excited to see what a TO PWHL title will bring to the city!

One final personal note, we mentioned during our show that we were invited on CBC radio this past week to discuss Keefe's dismissal and give our post playoff reaction. It was a great experience that would never have come our way without our listeners, and we thank you for helping make us a source for Leafs content! The interview can be found in our show notes.

Another reminder that we'll be moving back to our regular schedule, and heading back to the patio soon, where we'll be chilling and bringing you Leafs news all summer long. This could be a busy time for Leafs' Fans and we'll be here to keep the conversation going throughout the off-season. Go Leafs Go!

Gone Too Soon, Another Maple Leafs Postmortem: Will There Be Any Survivors?08 May 202400:58:19

In an all too familiar turn of events, another season is over too soon and it’s going to be another interesting summer for the Toronto Maple Leafs!

For this Maple Leafs postmortem we reprise our Good, the Bad and the Ugly segment, and open by discussing how well the Leafs' defense performed as a whole, despite lacking big-name players. and how rookie Matthew Knies stood out with his tenacity and scoring.  The team's home ice record however was a disappointment, with a lack of success at Scotiabank Arena, and the power play was a major weakness, with a lack of goals and missed opportunities. Unfortunately, results like this also yield some ugly moments, so we touch on the coaches' controversial post-game comments, with Sheldon Keefe suggesting that opposing teams set the team up to beat themselves and Jim Montgomery's comments about seeking advice from other coaches, namely Mike Babcock!

Despite the disappointment, there were still standout performances. In a special edition of the LTL Playoff Highlight Reel, the Ladies revel in special moments from our rookie bulldog Matthew Knies, Auston Matthews' standout performance in Game 2, showing his skill and leadership, and William Nylander, continuing to demonstrate his playoff prowess.

For the Third Period, with changes surely coming within the Toronto Maple Leafs organization, we discuss the future of the coaching staff and front office, upcoming free agents - who is staying and who may be going, as well as the possibility of passing the captaincy to Auston Matthews.

To wrap we share comments from a couple of members of our Facebook community that really sum up how we are all feeling in the wake of this most recent playoff exit. Truer words were never spoken!

It's back to our regular schedule, unless there is some big news from Leaf Land. They are the gift that keeps on giving, so whatever happens we'll have you covered. Till then, Go Leafs Go, now and forever!

Can the Leafs Turn Things Around in Game 2? LTL Insider Mike Augello Weighs In22 Apr 202400:53:04

Welcome to the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs!  Unfortunately, for the Leafs it has started with a game one loss to the Bruins but it’s only the first game of a 7 game series. One game, and as usual some hockey people are already saying the series is over.

For this episode we welcome back LTL Insider Mike Augello to discuss the Toronto Maple Leafs' performance in the playoffs so far, specifically in their opening game loss to the Boston Bruins. Mike brings you all his criticisms and concerns surrounding the Leafs, including those surrounding their goaltending, lack of scoring, undisciplined play, and coaching. We also touch on the importance of players stepping up in the playoffs and the need for the team to play to their strengths and stick to their roles. We wrap things up with a discussion on who should start in Game 2 and whether Willy will be back, as his absence left a big hole in the the lineup and had a huge impact on the result of game 1.

Leafs Nation, while we all felt that all too familiar sinking feeling in the pit of our stomach's after game 1, we also know we have been here before and that a bounce back in game 2 can bring us a completely different set of emotions. Here's to hoping that when we chat next our Buds are back on the winning side of things. GO Leafs GO!

Happy 100th! Sizing Up the Leafs' Playoff Prospects with Damien Cox and Mark Osborne17 Apr 202401:00:13

We're celebrating our 100th episode! Joining us to discuss the Leafs and the upcoming NHL playoffs are  journalist and author Damien Cox and former Leaf and current Pro Scout for the NHL's LA Kings, Mark Osborne.

Damien Cox, a media and broadcasting veteran, shares his thoughts on Auston Matthews' historic season, the Leafs' defense, Sheldon Keefe's coaching, and the potential impact Keith Pelley may have as the new CEO of MLSE. Then, in our conversation with Mark Osborne, we chat about what its like playing with record-breaking teammates, the role of a shutdown line, the pressure of playing in Toronto, and his experience as a pro scout with the LA Kings. He shares insights from his time as a player, his perspective on the media, and the importance of the best players performing in the playoffs.

We're so happy to be able to bring you the insights of these two savvy pros! With Damien Cox's extensive knowledge of the Leafs and the Canadian sports media landscape, and Mark Osborne's vast experience in hockey on and off the ice, it was truly a treat to get their perspectives on the Leafs' season and what the team may need to do to see success in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The countdown is now on, and this years playoff journey will begin in earnest on April 20th. As Damien said, it will either be heartbreak or euphoria! Like all of Leafs Nation, we're hoping for a lot more of the latter this time around. Go Leafs Go!

Takeaways

Auston Matthews is having a historic season and is the most prolific offensive player in the history of the Leafs franchise.
The Leafs' defense is a concern going into the playoffs, but the team's success will ultimately depend on their ability to score goals.
There is debate about whether Sheldon Keefe is the right coach for the Leafs, but the decision ultimately lies with MLSE.
The new CEO of MLSE, Keith Pelley, may have an impact on the business side of the organization, particularly in negotiations with the NHL for a new TV deal. Playing with record-breaking players is both routine and special, as it showcases the unique abilities and skills of these individuals.
The role of a shutdown line in today's NHL has evolved, with teams now expecting their third line to contribute offensively as well as defensively. Playing in Toronto comes with added pressure due to the media scrutiny and the high expectations of the fan base.
As a pro scout, Osborne's job involves evaluating players for trades and free agency, and his input is valued by the LA Kings' management team.
Osborne appreciates the growth of women's hockey and the increased coverage of the sport in the media.

LTL Quick Hits Volume 1: Who Wants the Leafs in Round 1 of the NHL Playoffs?16 Apr 202400:08:44

Welcome to our 1st volume of LTL Quick Hits!

In this bonus episode, we discuss the upcoming NHL playoffs and who would prefer to play the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round. When we last spoke with Rachel Doerrie, we asked her to weigh in on the potential matchups between the Leafs, the Boston Bruins, and the Florida Panthers. In this excerpt, Rachel explains why Boston would probably want to take on the Buds and we definitely agree! With the  Bruins historical dominance over the Leafs and the mental advantage they hold, no doubt they would be licking their chops. We also discuss the Panthers' strong offensive weapons and the goaltending factor. One thing is for sure, at some point the Leafs' playoff hopes will need to go through Boston. Beating the Bruins could be just the thing to galvanize the Leafs and relieve them of the mental burden they've been carrying. After that anything goes! Go Leafs Go!

Leafs Missing Mitch and Rachel Doerrie Says Stop Messing with the D!20 Mar 202401:02:06

Its inevitable that when the annual St. Paddy's Day game rolls around, our thoughts drift to the history of the team we love, and this year is no exception, so we begin the show remembering Pat Burns.

In this episode, the Good the Bad and the Ugly returns and we spotlight the performances of Ilya Samsonov and Pontus Holmberg, critique of Sheldon Keefe's coaching decisions, as well as express our concerns about the penalty kill.

Then for the Third Period we welcome Rachel Doerrie to help us analyze the Leafs' performance at the trade deadline. We discuss various topics related to the Leafs' moves, including the impact of not having a second-round pick, the goaltending situation for the playoffs, and the evaluation of Timothy Liljegren. And she pulls no punches with respect to her thoughts on Keefe's adjustments in the wake of Mitch Marner's injury! She is a wealth of knowledge and we appreciated her expert analysis and had fun getting to know her a bit better. To wrap up we preview the upcoming games and discuss the team's playoff positioning.

Lots still to iron out before the playoffs begin. Go Leafs Go!

Takeaways

The Toronto St. Pat's hockey team holds a special place in the hearts of Leafs fans.
Reaching 200 subscribers on YouTube is a significant milestone for the show.
Ilya Samsonov has been performing exceptionally well for the Leafs.
Sheldon Keefe's coaching decisions have been a topic of discussion and critique.
The Leafs' penalty kill needs improvement.
The Leafs' performance at the trade deadline was disappointing. Not having a second-round pick may have hurt the Leafs at the trade deadline, but the value of draft picks is often overestimated by other teams.
The Leafs should consider a rotation between their goaltenders in the playoffs to keep them fresh and maximize their performance.
Timothy Liljegren has shown promise and should be given more opportunities to prove himself.
While analytics and data analysis are important, it's also important to enjoy watching the game and not get too caught up in the numbers.
The Leafs' upcoming games and playoff positioning will be crucial in determining their success in the postseason.

Leafs Prospects: Ready or Not? Nick Barden Weighs in on Who Might Make the Leap!04 Sep 202400:48:59

Welcome to the final Patio Season episode of the Ladies Talkin’ Leafs offseason with another year in the books for our show!

We are celebrating an incredible season and the 5th Anniversary of this Podcast, doing what we love, talkin' Leafs with all of you! In this episode we're going to take a listen down memory lane as we run a very special Anniversary edition of the LTL Highlight Reel, featuring our most popular episodes from each of the past 5 seasons. Then, with training camp just around the corner and many holes yet to fill, we welcome Nick Barden, contributor to The Hockey News Toronto, to discuss the top prospects in the Leafs organization and get his thoughts on who he thinks could make the Leap to the big club. He also gives us his insights into the recent hiring of Steve Sullivan as an assistant coach for the Marlies and what he feels are the biggest question marks the Leafs still have going into the upcoming season.

It's been another incredible year for us here on Ladies Talkin' Leafs and we have so much to be grateful for! We want to thank all the amazing guests that took time out of their busy schedules to come on our show to talk Leafs with us. A special shout out, of course goes to our LTL Insider Mike Augello, who joins us throughout the NHL season and always delivers with his keen Leafs insights! Our final thank you and immense gratitude goes to you, our listeners, viewers and followers. Without you, our show would not be possible. We never could have imagined at the outset that we would be heading into a 6th season. You've made our dreams come true!

Next stop NHL pre-season, and even more exciting content to come throughout the 2024-25 season. Go Leafs Go!

How Do You Really Feel About the DOPS? and Talkin' Trade Deadlines Past and Present21 Feb 202400:54:28

Time has flown by since our last episode and as always we have a lot to get into. The NHL standings are very tight and the Leafs right now sit 3rd in the Atlantic only three points ahead of the Lightning, but with 3 games in hand. We kick off the show with a bit of levity, sharing some fun social media posts. Then, we’re back to our regular programming, with the Good, the Bad and the Ugly, where we highlight the performances of Jake McCabe and Max Domi. We also take a look at the Leafs' struggles against bottom six teams and the inconsistent play of Pontus Holmberg, as well as express our frustration with the NHL Department of Player Safety.

Next we showcase the standout performances of Ilya Samsonov, Bobby McMahon, and Auston Matthews with the LTL Highlight Reel. Then, in the Third Period, we discuss potential trade options for the Leafs leading up to the NHL trade deadline, and take a stroll down memory lane reviewing some past trade deadline deals, featuring Yannick Perreault and Owen Nolan. We wrap up with a quick look ahead at the schedule. The games are going to be coming fast and furious, and trade deadline talk will be front and centre. We’ll keep you up to date with all the news and takes leading up to the deadline and beyond! Go Leafs Go!

Takeaways

The Leafs' performance against bottom six teams has been a concern and has cost them important points in the standings.

Jake McCabe and Max Domi have been standout players for the Leafs, with McCabe showing his toughness and leadership, and Domi ramping up his game in preparation for the playoffs.

The NHL Department of Player Safety's inconsistent decisions and harsh punishments have frustrated fans and players alike.

Ilya Samsonov, Bobby McMahon, and Auston Matthews have been key contributors to the Leafs' success, with Matthews putting up record-breaking numbers.

The Leafs may consider making trades before the NHL trade deadline to address their needs for a right-shot defenseman and a bottom six forward. The Toronto Maple Leafs should target a defenseman, such as Alexander Carrier, from the Nashville Predators in a potential trade.

Past trade deadline deals for the Leafs, such as the Yannick Perreault trade and the Owen Nolan trade, have not always worked out well.

Secondary scoring is a key need for the Leafs.

Fans should engage with the show and support it through ratings, reviews, and donations.

The Ladies Welcome Sara Orlesky to Talk Leafs vs Jets24 Jan 202401:18:52

This Leafs team is taking us through an emotional roller coaster and they are in a tough stretch of games right now playing 8 games in 13 nights and so far it hasn’t been great! In this episode we start the show with some Leaf Talk, and our conversation covers the team's recent struggles, concerns about coach Sheldon Keefe, and issues with specialty teams, the PK in particular.

Then, for our Third Period segment, in anticipation of this week's home and home with the Winnipeg Jets, we welcome Jets Host and Producer Sara Orlesky to break it all down. She shares her impressions of what has made the Jets so successful so far this season, and why it should stick this year. As well we discuss the pseudo-rivalry between the Leafs and the Jets, the upcoming NHL All-Star Game, and her work in creating a connection between fans and the team through the documentary features she is producing. Finally, we discuss the best and worst aspects of a Winnipeg winter. Surprisingly, despite the cold temps, the good seems to outweigh the bad in this sunny city!

To wrap we take a look ahead to the games coming up post All Star Break, and get ready for the unofficial second half of the NHL season. Final reminder to vote for Ladies Talkin' Leafs in the category of Best Hockey Podcast: Ice and Field, for the Sports Podcast Awards! Voting closes January 28th. We thank you kindly. Go Leafs Go!

Does Nylander Deserve the Deal? : LTL Insider Mike Augello Weighs In10 Jan 202401:03:42

Happy 2024 everyone!  A New Year, and for the Leafs they have started 2024 in pretty good shape, going 3 and 0 on their California road trip! Auston Matthews had a December to remember, and we’ve started the year with plenty of Nylander buzz, while also being in the midst of a full on All Star voting frenzy on X!

This episode sees the return of our regular segments, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, and the Ladies Talkin’ Leafs Highlight reel. We’re back on track after a Post Global Series hiccup, with mostly good news to report, but there’s still some work to be done, notably on the power play, particularly if the Leafs plan on making any inroads in the standings.

We celebrate 2 debuts on the Highlight reel this episode, as a new fan favourite and emergency back stop join the ranks. Of course the top spot is once again occupied by a familiar player that is continuing to re-write the Leafs record books.

Then, for the Third Period, we welcome back our Ladies Talkin’ Leafs Insider, Mike Augello. It seems all roads lead to William Nylander these days, so who better to weigh in on the merits of Nylander’s new deal than Mike! Of course, we also took this opportunity to pick his brain on a few other players, as well as his thoughts on how to make the All Star Game more meaningful for the Players. His idea most definitely will shock some!

Finally, a quick reminder that there is still time to vote for our show in the Best Hockey Podcast: Ice and Field category, of the Sports Podcast Awards! Voting is open until January 28th, and we so badly want to represent you, our listeners in this category! You can find the link below in our show notes.

While we’re still kinda in the dog days, we can feel excitement just around the corner! Once the All Star game is behind us, it will be all business all the time. Playing in a tight Atlantic Division, with a much more condensed schedule, will leave little room for error. In the meantime, were looking forward to celebrating and showcasing our hometown in front of Leafs Nation and NHL fans throughout the Globe! Go Leafs Go!

Maple Leafs Shine on the Global Stage and Meet NHL Breakaway, the Future of Hockey Collectibles06 Dec 202301:07:46

We're baack! We are so excited to tell you about our trip to Stockholm, and what it was like being behind the scenes at the NHL Global Series! There were so many highlights, from mixing with the players and media members, witnessing touching fan interactions, and the splendour that is Stockholm. Each of us had moments we will never forget.

Next, its the return of the Good the Bad and the Ugly, and we pick up where we left off, giving kudos to Morgan Rielly and finally give Tyler Bertuzzi his due, as well as point some criticism coach Sheldon Keefe's way, and discuss our frustration with all the too many men on the ice penalties.

Then, with the delicious staple Swedish Meatball as our inspiration, we created a fun segment called 'Maple Leaf Meatballs' where we match different meatball flavours with Maple Leafs players! Check it out to see if you agree with our picks!

We conclude this episode with a fascinating interview with Travis Howe and Laith Murad of NHL Breakaway on the future of sports collectibles, and wrap things up with a preview of upcoming games. The Leafs definitely have some tough match ups ahead, including a measuring stick match up vs the Rangers.

Its definitely good to be home, but forever grateful for the NHL Global Series experience! Now its time to turn our attention to remainder of the season and what it holds for the Leafs. Some great stories are emerging and we're excited to see how it all plays out. Go Leafs Go!

We'll be there to bring you all the news and highlights from a fans point of view and as a wrap we'll be holding our first ever livestream on YouTube Sunday November 19th at 3 PM Eastern, 12 noon for our listeners in the West. Feel like we need to pinch ourselves and we are beyond excited to represent Leafs Nation in Stockholm!

Before we get there though we still have business to attend to here at home. We begin this episode with a bit of Leaf Talk, reviewing the week that was. It was an interesting one, with lots of ups and downs, player movement, rumours and innuendo, culminating with perhaps Leafs most complete game, a win versus the Canucks.

Then, for our Third Period segment we welcome Jackie Redmond, host on the NHL Network and the NHL on TNT, as well as backstage host for WWE Monday Night Raw. An avid Leaf Fan, we discussed how she feels about the team 15 games in, her thoughts on Sheldon Keefe, and how the new guys are fitting in. We also, talked a bit about her surprise teams in the NHL so far, her career in Sports Media, and touch on some of her favourite things in our For the Fans Q&A.

This show was a great way to wrap things up before heading out on the road with our Leafs! Be sure to subscribe and follow so you don't miss any of our reports, and of course tune in for our Road Trip Wrap Up on YouTube Sunday at 3 PM ET. Interestingly GO Leafs GO is the same in Swedish!

The Ladies Welcome Olympian Cheryl Pounder to Talk Leafs, Sens and the PWHL08 Nov 202301:01:28

Welcome to a bonus episode of the show!  Not because we want to talk about the Leafs losing streak, which is up to 4 games now after the loss to the Sabres. But, because we have great guest coming up in our 3rd Period segment!

Before we get to our guest, we of course have some Leaf talk, and we look into the 3 games vs the Kings, Bruins and Sabres. While we managed to get a couple of points from these losses, we know that a lot has to improve with our depth scoring, defensive play and penalty kill for this team to ultimately have success. With a few games left before they head to Stockholm, we're hoping they start to turn things around. What better way to start than with a win over Tampa?

For our 3rd Period segment we have a very special guest and are excited to have 2-time Gold Medalist for our Canadian women’s hockey team and now a broadcaster with TSN, Cheryl Pounder! Cheryl joined us to talk about the Leafs, the Senators, and the new PWHL that is starting up in January 2024! Cheryl had some amazing insights into why the Leafs' newcomers may be struggling to find their footing, and it was truly a gift to hear her speak so passionately about the inaugural season for the PWHL and the amazing talent that we'll get to watch in the league beginning in January.

One final note, we are excited to announce that our humble little show has been granted NHL Media Access for the NHL Global Series, we we'll be bringing the event to you Leafs Nation! From the practices, games, and the interactive activities of the Global Fan Tour, we'll cover it all from the Fans perspective! You never know who we might bump into! Follow and subscribe so you don't miss anything. GO Leafs GO!

October Triumph: Mike Augello Joins the Ladies to Talk About the Maple Leafs' Stellar Start01 Nov 202300:53:29

October is in the rearview mirror, and the Leafs have just returned from a stellar road trip, going 3-1-1 and are 5-2 and 1 to start the season! A much improved record when compared to the slow start a year ago. On the cusp on a new month, November could be a wildcard, with a trip overseas, something the Leafs haven’t done in a long time, and never during the regular season.

To kick things off, in "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly” we take a look at the road trip that was and sing the praises of a couple of our veteran leaders, as well as delve into the challenges on the Penalty Kill. We also lament a trend that we do not want to see make a come-back as our ugly.

In the The Ladies Talkin’ Leafs Highlight Reel we feature standout performances from Matthew Knies, William Nylander, and Morgan Rielly. These 3 gave us multiple plays to celebrate this month. Tune in to see if your favourites made the cut!

Then, we are happy to have our Insider, Mike Augello back on the show for The Third Period to give us his exclusive insights into the Leafs' start to the season.

To wrap up, we preview the upcoming Leafs schedule, including a 5-game home stand and the much-anticipated NHL Global Series in Sweden from November 15th to the 19th. We’ll be heading to Stockholm next month, so be sure to subscribe to our YouTube and socials @LTL1917 so you don’t miss any of our road trip reports!

November can be a pivotal month in the NHL calendar, with American Thanksgiving being the unofficial benchmark fuelling or dashing teams' hopes for making the playoffs. A strong start can go a long way toward securing another invitation to the spring dance. Looking forward to a November to remember. Go Leafs Go!

LTL Quick Hits Volume 4: The Toronto Maple Leafs Welcome a New Captain16 Aug 202400:25:18

The Leafs gave us some big news to talk about in naming Auston Matthews the 26th captain of the team! All things being equal, we don't think MLSE could've executed the move any better and by most accounts the official reveal was received positively by players and Leafs Nation alike. John Tavares handled the transition with grace and we are certain will continue to be a valuable presence in the dressing room. The appointment of Matthews as captain begins a new chapter and will help bridge the generational divide within the team.

The press conference was filled with touching moments, including Tavares' support for Matthews and his kids wearing Matthews jerseys. Moving forward, we are sure JT will thrive without the added pressure of being captain, and we expect Matthews to grow into the role and show even more leadership on and off the ice. One thing is certain, the honour of wearing the C for the Toronto Maple Leafs is not lost on AM34! Our lasting impression will definitely be the image of him beaming with pride as the announcement was made and he was presented with his new jersey.

Welcome to the Matthews era! Go Leafs Go!

Preseason Vibes: Evaluating the D, Joe Bowen's Return, and The Sun Survey Says!04 Oct 202300:41:32

Can you believe it, it's just 11 days until the regular season kicks off, and the anticipation for the Leafs' home opener is off the charts! The preseason is well underway, and the Leafs are holding a middling record of 3 wins and 3 losses. Plus, we've got 2 more games to go, with the final two preseason clashes with the Red Wings.

Speaking of things to look forward to, how great is it that the legendary Joe Bowen is back in the booth, calling the shots for the Leafs alongside Jim Ralph? It adds a level of comfort and excitement knowing that we’ll be hearing their familiar call on TSN Radio and The Fan. Leafs hockey would not be the same without these 2 in the booth!

As we get into the heart of the show, it's time to talk about the Leafs defense and goaltending. While the pairings may seem set in stone, we'll share our insights on the performance on the back end in the preseason games so far and give our thoughts on how we think Treliving and Keefe may deploy the D-corps and goaltenders during the regular season.

For our 3rd Period segment, we'll tackle some intriguing questions from a recent Maple Leafs poll conducted by The Toronto Sun. It's always fun to see how our choices compare as well as get a bead on how Leafs Nation is feeling heading into the season.

So, Leafs Nation, buckle up! We've got a fantastic episode lined up with all the Leafs talk you crave. With games that count just around the corner, we couldn't be more excited to be with you for another season talking about the team we all love! Go Leafs Go!

Celebrating 4 years Talkin' Leafs, Getting Primed for Training Camp, and Final Farewells06 Sep 202300:53:23

It’s an extra special show for a couple reasons - there is a lot of Leaf news to talk about and it’s also the 4th anniversary of our show! In this episode, we'll be reflecting on the incredible milestones we've achieved "Talkin' Leafs" with all of you! We wouldn't be here if it weren't for our listeners, so what better way to kick off this show than by paying tribute to you! Its been 4 incredible years, and we look forward to many more talkin' about our favourite team!

Packing up all the patio furniture sadly signals the end of summer, but it also brings excitement and anticipation because it means the NHL season is just around the corner! Brad Treliving, while having a fairly quiet summer, managed to do a couple of tidy pieces of business in August, signing Auston Matthews, and extending Sheldon Keefe. We'll discuss these two deals and how they affect the bigger picture for the team leading into training camp.

In our second segment, we dust off the Ladies Talkin' Leafs Highlight Reel and roll our top 4 show milestones over the past season. A Special shout out to our families for their input. They've been with us every step of the way, so who better to consult than the people who have encouraged us from day one!

Then, in our Third Period segment, we sadly must say goodbye to two special players that we lost in August. We pay tribute to Rodion Amirov and Bob Baun, and then wrap up the show getting you set for the Leafs upcoming season with a review of the schedule.

Life is filled with transitions. And while summer turns to fall, for Leaf fans its a renewed chance to witness greatness. Only a few weeks to go, and we'll have you covered for it all. We'll be back to set the stage September 27th, as we kick of Season 5! Go Leafs Go!

The Maple Leafs' Off-Season Progress: The Ladies Welcome David Alter to the Patio for an Exclusive Chat!02 Aug 202301:06:08

We are well into Patio Season and since our last show the Leafs have made some additions to their coaching and management staff as well as made some decisions with regards to their goaltending. G.M. Brad Treliving added Derek Clancey as an Assistant G.M., Player Personnel, which brings the number of Assistant G.M.’s to 5. With this hire, Treliving rounds out his staff adding a highly experienced team member with a Stanley Cup pedigree and someone he has worked closely with in the past.

With the front office set for the most part, the team got to work with their first order of business–Samsonov’s arbitration case. Going into it, the Leafs and the player were quite far apart, but the Arbitrator ultimately awarded Samsonov with a 1 year, $3.55 million deal. To dissect the goaltending situation as well as the other looming contract negotiations, we are pleased to welcome David Alter, long time Leaf reporter, and veteran of radio and print sports media, to our Third Period segment. If like us you have been trying to understand the why behind some of the Leafs’ moves or non-moves, David is the guy you need to listen to! His thorough research skills and knowledge of the Leafs’ cap will leave with no worries for the remainder of the off-season!

Before we get to David, we take a spin around social media searching for the Leafs/NHL players that seem to be making the most of their summers, as we highlight a few players that seem to be living their best life, and we also congratulate the latest Leaf to tie the knot, in what seems to be Hockey’s favourite off-season activity–Weddings!

While July ended up being a pretty busy month for NHL business, we have a feeling that August will end up being a little quieter, perfect for patio time! When it comes to the Leafs, the conversation never really ends, and we’ll still be chatting throughout the month, and we’ll be back in a month, ready to start ramping up for next season! Until then kick back with us and raise a glass. GO Leafs GO!

In this our first episode of the off-season, we have a ton of ground to cover! We start with a few NHL headlines, then get right into discussing the landmark partnership that was brokered by the Mark Walter Group and Billie Jean King Enterprises, bringing together the PWHPA and the PHF. This is a huge milestone for professional women’s hockey, and we hope a sign of big things to come for the league and its players!

Then, in our Third Period segment, we dive into all the Leafs news coming out of the NHL Draft and the early days of free agency with our LTL Insider Mike Augello. We covered a lot of ground with Mike, from his impressions of Nashville, and his thoughts on Leafs’ first round draft pick Easton Cowan, to what the signing of Bertuzzi might mean for the team’s ability to re-sign William Nylander. Treliving may have gotten off to a slow start on July 1st, but he’s more than made up for that since, signing several players that address some glaring needs. Mike gives us his “insider” perspective on that and more!

A programming note. We’ll be reducing our frequency to monthly over the off-season, publishing on the first Wednesday of the month during the summer. Our next show is scheduled for August 2nd, but of course, if any big news comes down, we’ll have you covered with a bonus episode. There’s no hiatus for the Ladies!

We’re still waiting on the big fish Auston Matthews to sign on the dotted line, and this may be the domino that needs to fall before the Nylander camp commits. While we wait, feel free to pull up a chair, and join our conversation. We’re always happy to welcome you on the Patio. Go Leafs Go!

Welcome to the NHL Offseason: The Cycle of Hope Renews for the Leafs with the Draft and Free Agency on the Horizon21 Jun 202301:04:56

Congrats to the Vegas Golden Knights on winning the Stanley Cup! The hardest trophy to win in all of professional sports, and the most beautiful trophy to boot! And with this begins the 2nd season–the NHL Offseason–beginning with the NHL Awards, followed by the NHL Draft and the start of the free agent signing period July 1st.

Leafs Nation has had much too much time to think since our earlier than desired playoff exit, and we’re sure that, like us, Leaf Fans can’t wait for the drama to begin to unfold, as we watch our 2023-2024 team take shape. What will Brad Treliving do to make his mark? His first move was bringing in Shane Doan as his assistant. In our first segment we discuss this hire, and what we think Doan will bring to the table.

Next, with the front office setting up, particularly with Doan joining the team, our thoughts inevitably drift to Auston Matthews. Can’t hurt to have his childhood idol on the negotiation committee right? Beyond Matthews, there is a lot of work to be done. After AM34 none more important than a contract for Willy! In addition there are key free agents to look at bringing back and/or in, some crafty cap maneuvering, a potential creative buyout or two, and a new contract for Keefe that all need to be done. We take a look at what we think the priorities are and how we think things may pan out.

Then in our Third Period segment, we discuss who the Leafs could be targeting in the upcoming draft and Free Agency! We found some interesting prospects that we hope could fall to the Leafs when they make their selection at 28. Then it's a hard pivot toward free agency as the market opens on July 1st. With 11 spots to fill, the new front office will have the opportunity to make a big impact, maybe for years to come.

No doubt the next couple of weeks will be full of drama and excitement, and emotions will once again swing toward hope for Leafs Nation. With that, its time once again to kick back and contemplate the team’s future as we await the start of next season. Join us on the patio on July 5th as we break it all down! Cheers and Go Leafs Go!

Out with the Old, In with the...?? Exactly What are the Leafs Getting in New Hire Brad Treliving?07 Jun 202301:04:54

Welcome to June!  No shortage of Leaf news to talk about, that’s for sure and we love it! Its been tough to be patient in Leaf Land with so much riding on the off season, and there was no time to waste for Brendan Shanahan and MLSE in hiring Kyle Dubas's successor! On May 31st, Brad Treliving was named the 18th General Manager in Maple Leafs franchise history! While there were several experienced candidate names floating around, the consensus pick by most was Treliving.

In this episode we will look at the Leafs' new hire, and discuss what we think he brings to the table, as well as his most pressing orders of business. To that end, with 10 UFA's looking for contracts and some key RFA's as well, we discuss who we think will be staying or leaving, and what it might take to keep a few key individuals.

Then in the Third Period, with Dubas "turning up" in Pittsburgh at the very moment that MLSE was introducing his replacement, we thought we would weigh in on his new gig and how things shook out since his untimely exit from the Leafs.

Finally, there's still Stanley Cup action happening! The Ladies have got you covered, and we break down our picks for the series as well as Con Smythe winner. Surprisingly there was some debate as to who each of us are backing for the Cup!

While the 2022-23 NHL season is winding down, and the off-season drama is preparing to unfold, we waiting in the wings ready to report! From welcoming new prospects from the draft to the wheeling and dealing of free agency, we'll be running down the top signings and stories, even if we have to do it from the Patio! Stay tuned... Go Leafs Go!

Never a Dull Moment: Mike Augello Joins the Ladies to Dissect the Dramatic Departure of Kyle Dubas and What's Next for the Leafs!24 May 202300:42:05

Some big and surprising news from the Leafs with President Brendan Shanahan announcing in a Friday afternoon press conference, that Kyle Dubas will not be returning as General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

We welcome back to the show our Ladies Talkin’ Leafs Insider Mike Augello to help us make sense of all the chaos! With Mike's help we attempt to dissect the timeline that lead to Dubas's demise. Then we get his perspective on some of the candidates that may be available to take the helm. No doubt there there is no time to waste! With Auston Matthews waiting in the wings, time is of the essence if the club wants to get his signature on the dotted line on July 1st!

This is a make it or break it moment for Shanahan and MLSE, and we'll have to wait to see if his gut instinct pays off. He hired Dubas as a 27 year old, after firing one the highest regarded GM's in league history on a hunch too! We think we can all agree, despite playoff rounds that ended earlier than we all would have liked, for the most part, its been a pretty successful run.

The next few weeks will be very telling, and we hope that we'll know the direction the Leafs' will be going in the next few weeks. We'll be reverting back to our regular twice monthly schedule, but if another bombshell drops we'll have you covered with another bonus episode. In the meantime, we wait. Go Leafs Go!
