Il nuovo capo di stato maggiore germanico, il generale Von Falkenhayn, si rende conto che dovendo combattere su due fronti, se vuole avere una qualche possibilità di successo, deve annientare una spina nel fianco dimenticata ad Anversa alcune settimane prima... Mentre la flotta ottomana e quella russa si contendono il Mar Nero, Enver Pascià guida una grande offensiva sul Caucaso, destinata però ad avere una fine catastrofica. Sul fronte occidentale invece, i Tedeschi e gli Alleati sono allo stremo, e nonostante ciò combattono ad oltranza. Perfino degli Italiani si uniscono ai combattimenti. Mentre su tutta la linea si continua a combattere, in alcuni settori del fronte le armi tacciono, almeno il giorno di Natale. La grande ritirata degli Alleati sul fronte occidentale è nel pieno. Le forze francesi, duramente sconfitte durante la battaglia delle frontiere, trovano la forza di rispondere all'avanzata germanica, combattendo disperate azioni di retroguardia. In Lorena, il principe di Baviera prova a calcare la mano sulla 2a armata francese di Castelnau, ma viene fermato in quella che di fatto è la prima grande sconfitta dei Tedeschi sul fronte occidentale. Nel frattempo, a Parigi, il governo si accorge che la capitale è completamente scoperta di fronte all'avanzata dell'ala destra germanica. Il piano messo a punto da Hoffman, Ludendorff e Von Hindenburg è pronto a partire. Nel corso di cinque giorni di battaglia, Tedeschi e Russi si affronteranno in una delle più grandi e decisive battaglie della Prima Guerra Mondiale. Sebbene a livello di numero di uomini impiegati lo scontro fu più piccolo rispetto alla battaglia delle frontiere, il tributo in sangue e distruzione pagato dallo sconfitto fu in proporzione quattro volte maggiore alla media di un singolo scontro del fronte occidentale.
