Ep 27: Empathy in Medicine: Dr. Mike's Approach to Chronic Pain & Kratom17 May 202400:38:52

In this episode of Kratom Stories, Madalyn talks to Dr. Mike, a primary care provider who also treats chronic pain and happens to be a pain patient himself. He's gained an impressive following on TikTok for his candid discussions about pain management and patient advocacy. Dr. Mike shares his personal experience with chronic pain and how it transformed his approach to treating others. He sheds light on the challenges patients face, including dismissive medical professionals and limited access to effective pain relief options, particularly opioid medications. He's even written a brand new book, You Are More, that helps patients advocate for their health.

Discovering Kratom through his online community, Dr. Mike reveals his positive experience with the plant, advocating for responsible use and sourcing from quality vendors. While he encourages the exploration of Kratom as a potential alternative for pain management, he advises against mixing it with prescribed pain medications. He stresses the need for medical professionals to be better informed about Kratom so they can educate their patients and provide alternative solutions for pain relief, especially as access to opioid medications becomes increasingly restricted.

Ep 16: From Addiction to Innovation: The Blate Papes Journey with Harrison Cohen01 Mar 202400:45:02

Harrison Cohen, CEO and co-founder of Blate Co., the makers of Blate Papes, shares his transformative journey from battling opioid addiction and body image issues to discovering and utilizing Kratom as a pivotal tool in his recovery. Harrison's story illuminates his early interest in health and fitness, leading him down a path of substance exploration and eventually toward Kratom. This botanical offered him a sustainable alternative to Subutex. His detailed account not only sheds light on his personal struggles and recovery but also emphasizes Kratom's role as a beneficial ally in overcoming addiction, underscoring the plant's potential when used responsibly.

Harrison's entrepreneurial spirit led him to create Blate Papes, an innovative product designed to improve the Kratom consumption experience plus it can be used with other supplement powders and oils. Originating from his dissatisfaction with existing methods of Kratom intake, such as the uncomfortable taste associated with powder and health concerns with traditional parachuting techniques, Blate Papes emerged as a safer, more efficient alternative. This edible film allows for a mess-free, tasteless, and direct method of consuming Kratom powder, marking a significant advancement in the product offerings within the Kratom community. Harrison's journey from addict to innovator not only highlights the challenges faced by many in similar struggles but also showcases the creative solutions that can arise from personal adversity, contributing positively to the broader conversation on Kratom's place in society.

Ep 41: Finding Relief: Lora Romney's Journey with Trigeminal Neuralgia and Kratom30 Aug 202400:53:14

Utah resident Lora Romney shares her inspiring journey with Kratom. Diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia, one of the most painful conditions known to humans, she endured years of misdiagnosis and countless medications before finding relief with Kratom. After exhausting all conventional treatments, including surgery and pain management, Lora was hesitant to try Kratom, but the encouragement of a friend convinced her to give it a shot. The results were transformative. She experienced significant pain reduction, allowing her to dramatically decrease her opioid reliance and regain control over her life.

Lora's journey led her to become an advocate for Kratom. She actively supported the passage of Utah's medical cannabis initiative, even though she doesn't use it herself. This experience gave her the courage to dive into Kratom advocacy, bringing her personal story and knowledge of Kratom to legislative hearings and helping to raise awareness and understanding of the plant's impact on her life. Lora emphasizes the importance of education and normalization, encouraging others to be active in the Kratom community and share their stories. Her message resonates deeply with anyone struggling with chronic pain, addiction, or anxiety, highlighting Kratom's role as a tool for regaining control and improving quality of life.

Ep 12: The Kratom Guy Mike Overstreet: Unveiling a Path from Pain & Addiction to Advocacy02 Feb 202400:51:05

In this installment of Kratom Stories, I sit down with Mike Overstreet, popularly known as The Kratom Guy. He opens up about his transition from a harrowing battle with opioid dependency to finding solace and pain relief in Kratom. Sharing a universally resonant struggle of managing chronic pain post a wrestling injury, Mike's personal narrative portrays Kratom as a beacon of hope, not just for him, but many others trapped in the throes of addiction and the debilitating side effects of traditional pain medication.

His journey didn't just end with personal recovery; it propelled him into advocacy, leading to the creation of The Kratom Guy podcast and the Botanical Action Network (BAN), a group dedicated to supporting and advocating for individuals entangled in legal difficulties due to Kratom. He discusses BAN's focus on unjust Kratom-related incarcerations, shedding light on cases like Marshall Price and Shaina Brown to emphasize the draconian response to Kratom in certain legal jurisdictions.

Mike's story is a compelling testament to the value of Kratom in pain management and addiction recovery, provoking discussion on advocacy, legality, and responsible use.

Deborah E, a long-time friend of mine, shares her life-changing experience with Kratom in this episode. Struggling with chronic pain for over a decade, she turned to prescription painkillers like Oxycodone and Gabapentin for relief. However, these medications led to numerous side effects, leaving Deborah in search of a better solution. Upon hearing about Kratom from me, she decided to give it a try and was immediately able to manage her pain and reduce her reliance on prescription medications. Deborah credits Kratom with giving her a new lease on life, allowing her to be more present and effective in her daily activities.

Despite misinformation and stigma surrounding Kratom, she encourages others to do their research and consider it as a natural alternative to prescription painkillers. Deborah's story highlights the potential benefits of Kratom for those struggling with chronic pain. It also sheds light on the importance of finding a trusted vendor and starting with a low dose when trying Kratom for the first time. Overall, Deborah's experience serves as a powerful reminder of the healing potential of natural remedies and the importance of seeking alternative solutions to traditional medication.

Ep 9: From Gaslit to Relief: Kratom's Healing Power with Truther Nurse12 Jan 202400:48:55

In this episode, I invite Kristen Granger, known as Truther Nurse on social media, to discuss the profound impact Kratom has had on her life. Kristen, previously a nurse who experienced debilitating pain, was initially gaslit and misdiagnosed by doctors. Her journey for answers culminated in a lupus and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome diagnosis. Frustrated with heavy medications and their side effects, Kristen turned to Kratom. This natural remedy not only alleviated her pain but also transformed her life, allowing her to be present for her family and live a more fulfilling life.

Kristen advocates for Kratom through social media despite censorship obstacles. Her experience with Kratom has removed her reliance on pharmaceuticals and led her to create content that educates others about this plant. She emphasizes the importance of personal research and the trial-and-error nature of finding the proper dosage. Kristen also shares her seamless use of Blate Papes, which are edible film pouches used for ingesting Kratom, making it a cost-effective and more comfortable consumption method compared to capsules.

Kristen's powerful testimony is one of many that underscore the potential of Kratom as a life-changing substance. Ep 40: Kratom as a Harm Reduction Tool: John Shinholser's Perspective23 Aug 202400:46:59

This episode includes some strong language. If four-letter words aren't your thing, you might want to skip this one. But if you're cool with it, let's dive in.

This week on Kratom Stories, Madalyn Sklar interviews John Shinholser, a leading voice in the recovery community who's experienced a powerful transformation through his own journey with Kratom. For decades, John has dedicated his life to aiding individuals recovering from substance abuse, founding the McShin Foundation, a peer-run recovery community center in Richmond, Virginia. However, his perspective shifted when he started noticing the positive impact Kratom had on individuals in his care, helping them manage various challenges without compromising their recovery.

John shares his eye-opening story of conducting a "survey" with 30 opioid addicts, providing them controlled access to Kratom for a week to assess its effectiveness in aiding detoxification. This bold experiment showcased the plant's potential as a harm reduction strategy, leaving John convinced of its value. He passionately advocates for greater understanding and acceptance of Kratom within the recovery community, battling against misinformation and harmful stereotypes surrounding the plant. He argues that Kratom has the potential to revolutionize recovery by offering a plant-based alternative to traditional treatment methods. Listen to John's insightful perspective on the future of harm reduction and plant-based recovery in this compelling episode.

Ep 1: My Kratom Story: How a Plant Transformed My Pain to Power01 Dec 202300:33:00

Welcome to the first episode of "Kratom Stories" with me, your host, Madalyn Sklar. If you've ever battled chronic pain, you know how tough of a fight it is. For more than a decade, I've been in the trenches of degenerative disc disease, relying heavily on prescription opioids that came with their fair share of issues. From the societal stigmas to the constant worries about changing healthcare policies, it was tough.

In 2019, I was abruptly abandoned by my pain management doctor and that's when I discovered something life-changing: Kratom. Following exhaustive research and collective wisdom from online support groups, I decided to give this botanical a try.

Right away I noticed amazing pain relief. It's like I've been handed my zest for life back, not just putting a band-aid on the pain. Plus, the shift from prescription opioids to Kratom was seamless for me, with no side effects or withdrawal shocks. Looking back, it underscores the power of exploring your options and taking an active role in your healthcare journey.

Ep 35: Finding Freedom with Kratom: Mike Felicetta's Path to Recovery19 Jul 202400:41:46

From social worker to struggling addict, Mike Felicetta's life took a dark turn after a back injury led him down a path of opioid dependence. Years of battling addiction, rehabs, and even resorting to heroin left Mike feeling trapped. However, a chance encounter with someone purchasing Kratom at a gas station sparked a glimmer of hope. Though his initial reliance on extracts threatened to replace one addiction for another, Mike found guidance within the Kratom community. With the help of individuals like Jordan Richard of New Hope Botanicals, he transitioned to whole-leaf powder and discovered a path towards true healing.

Mike's story is a powerful testament to Kratom's potential, but he's also a voice of caution. He stresses the importance of informed, responsible use, steering clear of extracts, and advocating for third-party tested products from reputable vendors. Kratom, for Mike, wasn't a magic eraser that instantly wiped away addiction. Instead, it gave him the breathing room he needed to address the root causes of his struggles, ultimately enabling him to build a fulfilling life and a newfound appreciation for the plant.

Ep 49: Understanding Kratom with Mac Haddow: Science, Politics, and Personal Experience25 Oct 202400:53:27

In this week's episode of Kratom Stories, Madalyn Sklar interviews Mac Haddow, the senior fellow on public policy for the American Kratom Association (AKA), and a Kratom consumer himself. Mac shares his personal journey with Kratom, revealing how it helps manage chronic pain stemming from past injuries. His introduction to Kratom was unexpected—a vendor offered him a sample, and he experienced a calming effect with an energy boost. This personal experience, combined with seeing Kratom's positive effects on Senator Orrin Hatch (who also used Kratom for pain relief), solidified Mac's advocacy for the plant. He details his extensive experience in politics and how this led him to fight for Kratom's legal status, facing opposition—particularly from within the FDA who are seemingly intent on banning it.

Mac details the FDA's biased view of dietary supplements and how the agency's actions threatened to unjustly ban Kratom based on flawed data and the misunderstanding of the plant's benefits. He recounts the intense fight to prevent the 2016 ban, highlighting the passionate outpouring of support from Kratom consumers that ultimately swayed the DEA, and the ongoing challenges Kratom continues to face due to the FDA’s actions. He emphasizes the importance of consumer voices in advocating for the plant, particularly in the face of local bans fueled by misinformation.

Mac shares advice for new Kratom users, stressing the importance of starting with small doses to find what works best for their needs. Recent FDA research has shown that Kratom is well-tolerated at various dosages, which should be reassuring to those considering using it. He underscores that  various user groups—including those seeking energy boosts, mood elevation, and pain relief—all benefit from Kratom. Mac and Madalyn end the show by encouraging listeners to get involved with the American Kratom Association to protect access to this beneficial plant, which has improved the lives of millions.
