• Why did you write “None Greater?”
• Is an attribute of God something God has or something God is?
• What do we lose if we lose the Divine Simplicity of God?
• When we talk about some of these attributes, love for example, how does saying that God is love or that God loves not challenge the doctrine of impassibility? Does God have an emotional life? If not, then how does saying “God loves you” mean anything?
• What do we do with language that seems to communicate that God is passionate?
• Can you give a brief explanation of the doctrine of the eternal functional subordination of the Son and what you think of it?
• Why do you find this view concerning?

Helpful Definitions:

• Divine Simplicity: The incomprehensible God we are speaking of is without parts, His essence is His attributes and His attributes is His essence.
• Pure Actuality: God is so alive and complete and therefore, never has to be changed, acted upon or moved. He is life without measure.
• Passive Potency: We have potential that has to be activated in order to be brought to completion.
• Theistic Mutualism, Theistic Personalism, Mono Polytheism: Describing the God of modern theology in broad strokes. This God is one but not all that different from gods in polytheistic religions. These are gods that might feel comforting to us at first but not that we would worship in the end
• Immutable: From eternity past to eternity future God is unchanging. God is always the same.
• Aseity: God is a se, or has aseity: He is self-existent and self-sufficient.
• Impassibility: God is without passions.
  • Passions: Exist whenever a finite creature is acted upon by, effected by, or even changed by something external to ourself; a change occurs within that moves you.
• Eternal Functional Subordination: The way we should think of the trinity is in terms of roles and relationships of hierarchy, authority, and submission. The Father has greater authority and power than the Son (Still equal in essence). The Holy Spirit is functionally lower still.

• Omnipresence: Everywhere fully present.
• Deism: The belief that God created something and then stepped away from his creation. God is absent and careless about his creation. 
• Pantheism: The belief that God is a 1:1 correlation with His creation. God is powerless because he is his creation.
• Extra Calvinisticum: Teaching that Christ's divine nature cannot be enclosed or imprisoned within a human nature, but remains infinite despite being in union with a finite body.
• Trinitarianism: God eternally exists as one essence in three distinct persons, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, each of whom is fully God, yet there is One God.
• Transubstantiation (Catholicism) - The view of the Lord’s Supper that the conversion of the whole substance of the bread and wine into the whole substance of the body and blood of Christ.  
• Consubstantiation (Lutheranism) - The view of the Lord’s Supper that the substances both of the body and blood of Christ and of the bread and the wine coexist in union with each other. 
• Memorial (Anabaptist) - The view of the Lord’s Supper that the Eucharist is merely symbolic in nature.
• Spiritual Presence (Reformed) - The view of the Lord’s Supper that teaches that in the elements and in the proceedings of communion Christ is spiritually present with his people.
• Omniscience: All things are known effortlessly and instantly.
• Eternal: Not bound by time.

• Communicable Attribute: Things that are true about God, that can also become true of us.
• Infinite: No limit of any kind.
• Omnipotent: All powerful.
• Omniscient: All things are known effortlessly and instantly.
• Revelation: The self-disclosure of God. God Himself is the sole and proper witness to himself.
• General Revelation: God reveals his divine attributes in the world.
• Special Revelation: God reveals who He is in the Word of God incarnate and the Word of God inscripturated.
• Incomprehensible: Not able to be fully understood.
• Apophatic (Negative) Theology: We cannot in language or in knowledge know or rightly articulate the perfect goodness of the nature and character of God. So a more adequate solution than to use words that fail to describe who and what God is, is to use words that describe what he is not.
• Gnosticism: A heresy that plagued the early church. One of the main teachings of Gnosticism was that all physical matter is evil and all spiritual and immaterial things are good. Therefore, the Gnostic view of life was that death would free of us from the physical evil we can’t escape. Gnostics taught that after death, humans left their earthly bodies behind and enjoyed an immortal, spiritual presence with God.

• Eternal Functional Subordination of the Son: A position that subordinates the Son’s divine will to the Father’s divine will.
• Social Trinitarianism: The view that God is only his activity in the world.
• Open Theism: The view that God is subject to some of the creaturely limitations or some of the operations of the world in ways that we are subject to.
• Christocentric Trinitarianism: The very persons of Father, Son, and Spirit are to highlight God the Son; He is the image of the invisible God and the one that the Spirit is supposed to show us.

• We’ve heard (and subsequently forgotten) the title of JT’s dissertation. Jen and Kyle, if you had to write a dissertation, what would it be on?
• My new pastor has grown a lot from his UPC roots, but isn’t quite where I’m at in regards to the trinity. I appreciate that He is looking to the Word and growing, but this is still my biggest concern. He says if NT Wright is a trinitarian, then so is he. I don’t have context to interpret that well. He’s also leery of the word “persons” when speaking of the trinity, but does affirm distinction and oneness. He agrees that Father is not Son, etc, but all three are one God. Can you speak a bit about what I am losing if I agree to disagree here? Is there a major loss in saying ‘three beings, one God’ instead?
• Our pastor views keeping a Sabbath as wise and beneficial, but doesn’t believe it’s necessarily a command we have to keep. Is this true?
• For Kyle, would you be willing to talk about your relationship with foster care? I’d love to hear about your theology surrounding foster care, and how your faith informs how you’ve participated in caring for foster children and/or their families.
• What habits have you guys found to be the most beneficial for your spiritual life and family life?

• @Kyle Worley, I believe you’ve said plant and animal death is amoral (i.e., plant and animal death could occur before the fall because their life and death doesn’t go against God’s created order and will as human death does). Recently, a family member got upset by my choice to eliminate mice from my home via execution instead of relocation. This brought about the discussion of whether plants and animals have souls. I’m curious to hear y’all’s evidence on morality surrounding plants and animals.
• Jen, if you could talk to your 30 year old self, what advice would you give her specifically related to teaching the Bible?
• What do we mean when we say we’re evangelical? Meaning-evangelical as opposed to what?

• Evangelical: From the Greek term euangelion.
  • Bebbington's Quadrilateral:
    1. Belief in the Bible. This is God’s word, it’s authoritative for our life, it’s the story of the world, and we submit ourselves to it.
    2. The cross. The most definitive event in human history, this is where we find our redemption, our reconciliation to God, atonement, justification.
    3. The concept of being born again. The cross and the giving of the Holy Spirit is something that needs to happen. The cross isn’t s concept that is meaningful for you until you have realized I am a sinner in need of redemption, reconciliation, and ultimately regeneration.
    4. Activism. We want to be engaged in our world in biblically meaningful ways to extend God’s cultural mandate or the great commission to the ends of the earth.
