Guide to Supplements for Calming 10 Jul 202600:24:37

Hello everyone!

I wanted to do a quick check-in with you all. The newsletter will return to its fortnightly (every 2 weeks) schedule after the podcast goes out next week.

Last week, I thought I would try the video podcast approach, as that is popular with other podcasters.

A video of my podcast is regularly posted on YouTube, so I thought I would try it on Substack as well. Knowing what appeals to the Substack audience helps me create relevant content, and knowing how you like to listen to the podcast is also helpful.

Here is the audio-only version of last week’s podcast.

For future reference, if I move forward with video podcasts, all video podcasts from Substack can be listened to as audio-only. On the left side of the video in the Substack article, there is a camera icon and a headphones icon. Click the headphones icon for audio-only.

Thank you,

Dr. Sally J. Foote 🩺🐾 DVM, CABC-IAABC, LSHC-S, FFE

Your Pet Needs the Same Vet05 Jun 202600:31:53

Welcome to Know Your Pet and Vet!

Over the past 40+ years that I have been in practice, I've been seeing a disturbing trend of pet owners not getting the same veterinarian for care with each visit to the vet. Or at the very least, they aren’t being given a choice of veterinarian and technician. This Roulette Wheel like experience of someone new every time leaves clients feeling like they are just a commodity, another box to be checked off the to-do list of the veterinary staff. Some of my behavior clients have even commented that the veterinary staff is not reading the notes in the record from the previous visit, further dissolving any trust in how much the staff care for this pet.

A relationship centered practice takes the time to schedule clients with the same veterinarian and/or technician to insure continuity. Some practices, no matter what the size, may not value building the veterinarian/client relationship. As a veterinarian, I have experienced both types of practice cultures, and I want to share what it is like for the team, the client, and the pet.

If you have any stories about your relationship with your clients or veterinarian, tell me your story in the Substack or Spotify comment section, or email me at drsallyjfoote@gmail.com

How to Stop Sticker Shock for Veterinary Care 15 May 202600:34:51

Welcome to Know Your Pet and Vet!

In this episode I share with you how to deal with high veterinary bills. Sticker shock over veterinary bills has been an issue for clients for years. Recent articles have talked about why this is a growing issue but not what you can do to manage immediate costs.

After 42 years of practice, I have learned how to help clients approach the cost of care in the moment: when they cannot afford all the tests or medications, but their pet needs help now. Talk to the veterinary team about what your financial limits are, and ask can be done to improve your pet’s health.

If you have had any experiences with high veterinary bills or how your clinic helped your clients, tell me your story in the Substack or Spotify comment section, or email me at drsallyjfoote@gmail.com

Why Your Cat Needs a Special Medication Place 30 Apr 202600:17:40

Welcome to Know Your Pet (and Vet)!

In this episode I share practical steps on how to create a special, safe place to give your cat medication. Having a special and safe medication spot makes the whole process much less stressful on both the pet parent and cat. I also discuss why this is important, and share a nice story at the end to show you how this works (and to show vet staff how to explain to pet parents on how to do this).

If you have any experiences with making a medication spot for your cat at home, tell me your story in Substack or Spotify comment section, or email me at dr.sallyjfoote@gmail.com

Please rate and review to tell me what you think of the show!

Thanks,

Solutions for the Struggle of giving Cats Medication26 Mar 202600:26:38

Welcome to the pilot episode of Know Your Pet and Vet!

In this episode I share with you why giving cats oral medications, like pills and liquids, is so difficult.  It’s not that you can’t do this right - there’s a lot about the sensitivity of holding their head, the taste of the medication, and more that makes it so hard.

One way to decrease medication struggles is using transdermal gels. This is a way that medications can be made into a gel that is absorbed through their skin, so it avoids a lot of the struggle.

I will also explain the 3 things you must set up to have a low-stress cat medication place. Yes, cats can learn to hop up on a counter or get comfy on your lap to get their daily meds. It’s possible once you learn about these 3 steps.

I will also give tips for the veterinary team on how to communicate with the pet owner to determine what is the best way for this pet to get medicated.

I look forward to your comments and please share this episode with all cat lovers and caregivers!

Thanks,

Dr. Sally J. Foote 🩺🐾
