Episode 8: Answering a listener question: How can the Keto diet help with skin health? 29 Aug 201700:56:53

Today we are talking about your skin health and does the Ketogenic diet help you get better skin?  We are going to talk about nutrients, vitamins, fats, carbs, processed foods, oils and how they all affect your skin health. How about what you put on your skin?  How do you wash your skin?  Do you wear makeup? How many chemicals do you expose your skin to? Do you know that your skin has it's own microbiome?  Did you know that the PH level of your skin is super important?  Listen today and let's get this figured out together.

My tip of the day is explaining the benefits of DRY BRUSHING. Have you heard of it?  Do you do it? Do you do it correctly?  It's an excellent thing to do for your skin for sure, but did you also know that it is super good for your immune system and even your digestion?

Episode 4: Solo episode where Jessica talks all about hormone health!08 Aug 201700:38:41

In this episode we talk all about hormonal health and how diet plays such a huge role in how our endocrine system functions. We discuss how our sex hormones, adrenals and "flight or fight" system are all intertwined so we can understand how they affect each other.

Though Jessica focuses primarily on women and women's hormones in this episode it is certainly something that men could beenfit from understanding, as well. (And look for a men focused hormonal health episode in the future!

Recorded while getting some much needed R&R at Norris Lake in Tennessee where I was working on taking care of my adrenals and para-sympathetic nervous system so that I can avoid that chronic cortisol state of being!  And don't forget to get out there and make yourself some vitmain D - you'll thank me later for it.

Episode 3: Nutrition basics, Macronutrients and why they matter.01 Aug 201700:29:19

Today Jessica and co-host Derek dish on macronutrient info and how working with the Keto WOE helps you to optimize our bodies and their usage of these 3 macros: fat, protien and carbohydrates.  Why does low fat and low carb not work. Why are all carbohydrates treated the same by your body?  What happens when we listen to bad advice to eat too much protien. What...no "heart healthy whole grains" needed?  That's right!

Your body will literally make all the carbs that we need if we don't take enough in and we certainly do not need to ever eat carbs in the form of grains and sugar.

We briefly touch on fasting, Intermitent Fasting and Apoptosis. Why do you want that?

Tip of the Day: ever tried Cyrotherapy?  Jessica loves this cold treatment.  After a month of trying it she has really noticed the effects.

Thanks for listening and don't miss the next episode where we are going to talk about the much requested hormone health topic!

Don't forget to check out Jessica's nutrional coaching info at www.jessicatye.com or email her directly at jessica@jessicatye.com.  She is available to coach anyone around the country and can work with you in a variety of ways of eating including Paleo, Keto and Fasting. She will be happy to work with you at a pace you are comfortable with.

Episode 1: Welcome to Keto Lifestyle! 25 Jul 201700:21:40

Looking for how to start a new healthier lifestyle?  Interested in moving away from the Standard American Diet? Are you feeling tired of being tired and just want to get your health and vitality back? Well, that is exactly what we hope to help you achieve on this brand new podcast!  While we will focus primarliy on the Ketogenic lifestyle and way of eating, I also plan to give you lots of info on just eating real whole foods and how Paleo is also a really great way for many to get their life and health back.  In this very first episode you will get a quick introduction to me, Jessica Tye, and my husband, Derek, who is cohosting with me on this episode and probably a few more in the future.

We touch on describing the Paleo diet, eating "real food" and Ketogenic diet.

Are there things you want to hear about in the future? Certain guests you would like us to have on?  Please shoot us an email and let me know! jessica@jessicatye.com

How am I qualified to work with you on your nutrition?  I have literally done about every diet out there. I have been vegan, vegetarian, paleo, low carb/low fat....Ive done about every cleanse you can imagine and royally messed up myself along the way. What started me on the right path? In my 30's I was sitting in front of my OB/GYN doctor complaining about how tired I was and how I just seemd to have this stubborn 15lbs I couldn't shed since giving birth to my youngest son nearly 10 years earlier. I always felt bloated and my periods were just getting worse every year. When we got the results back from my blood work she sat me down and told me that I was on my way to type 2 diabetes, had high cholestorol, was anemic and was very very low in vitamin D.

How was this possible? Okay, I knew I had a sweet tooth, but I hadn't been drinking soda regularly in years. Ate occasional treats at parties, special events and holidays and liked a bit of ice cream a few times a week, but I wasn't the candy bar eating, soda sucking, Twinkie loving person I thought you had to be to be running headlong into Type 2 Diabetes.....boy did I so misunderstand how the body worked. And for the record, so did my doctor at least when it came to nutrition.  She also suggested that I cut out red meat since my cholestorol was high. I was a VEGAN at this time and had been for nearly 2 years! She put me on a very high dose of Vitamin D and an iron supplement (wasn't red meat supposed to supply me with that?).

I knew that day I had to make some changes. Even though I didn't know much about health and nutrition (even though I thought I did at the time) I knew enough that this didn't make any sense based on what I knew I was eating and NOT eating. I had seen my dad recently be diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, I had watched my mother in law lose 2 husbands to ill health at an early age and like most of you I knew lots more people (seemingly younger and younger all the time) that were sick and dealing with chronic issues and diseases.  My oldest son was also dealing with lots of health issues and had been since birth so I just launched myself into researching nutrition and health.  I began learning about the then fairly new way of eating called "Paleo" and the whole "real food" movement.  I began working with a Functional Medicine Practioner shortly there after and began turning around my health.   My husband jumped on board and we were off to changing our family!  In the process we found out that my oldest son high a gluten sensitivity and was suffering greatly from that. My youngest daughter also is gluten sensitive and can't have dairy.  Watching our children begin to thrive was amazing and gave me the steam to keep learning.

Early in 2017 I took the "leap" into the Ketogenic way of eating. All of the things that had been continuing to plague me even with all the positive nutrition changes I had made started to clear up once I sent Keto.  My adult acne cleared up - I had struggled years with really bad cystic type acne. My intestinal issues and distress went away. Brain fog is all but gone (remember I have 5 kiddos so that's a miracle in itsself ;)! My energy has shot through the roof. I sleep way better than I ever have before and I have lost several dress sizes. Long gone are the heavy and hard periods and the bloat!

I am super passionate about helping others to make changes in their lives and the lives of their families and am super excited to share things I learn on this podcast.

**In this episode I talk about "Oil Pulling" near the end of the podcast (around the 18:00 minute mark) and I completely forgot to finish up by telling you how to end the Oil pulling session. Im sorry!  So here you go:

After swishing it around 20 minutes or so (start with 5-10 minutes if you need to and work up to 20 minutes) you can spit it into the trash can (don't spit it down the sink. The oil can gunk up your pipes). Then rinse your mouth with warm water and spit that out. You can brush as normal if you want. I typically just put water on my tooth brush and brush like that for a minute.  If you try this out and notice great results I would love to hear about them.  Please email me, message me on Facebook, etc. I love hearing how things worked for people. I haven't met anyone yet that did oil pulling and didn't see results - give it a week :)

Thanks for listening!

Matt Gallant is the CEO of BiOptimizers and has a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology. He’s been a strength and conditioning coach for multiple pro-athletes, a self-defense instructor, and has over 10 years experience formulating supplements. Fun fact: Matt’s been playing guitar and keyboards for over 19 years… and recorded a hard rock CD when he was young and angry.

BiOptimizers started in 2004.  Wade and Matt had been friends for years and bonded over their passion for health and fitness.  They were both some of the top personal trainers at World’s Gym downtown Vancouver.

Matt Gallant was also a successful online entrepreneur and he felt that Wade Lightheart was very marketable due to his unique credentials and story. Wade was a 3X natural bodybuilding champion and did it as a vegetarian.

So, they launched their first product together in January of 2004 called “Freaky Big Naturally”.  It was an instant hit amongst bodybuilders.

They proceeded to launch several groundbreaking products in 2005-2006 including:

  • Masszymes
  • Organic hemp protein (a full decade before “plant protein” became a hot seller)
  • Several fitness programs

Over the years, Wade and Matt’s passion for bodybuilding diminished and their passion for helping others achieve a biologically optimized state of health increased.

For those reasons, in 2014 they rebranded to BiOptimizers.  BiOptimizers has one mission: help humans shift from a sick unhealthy condition into a peak biologically optimized state.  Biologically Optimized Health is a state of existence where all of the body’s functions operate in perfect harmony

Our unique health solutions empower you to achieve an optimal state of well-being in the body, mind, and soul.  This allows you to have more energy, feel great and live a better life.

Episode 98: Integrative Health Coach & Author of "No Fricken Weigh! 21 Days to Ditch the Diet & Shed the Weight the Keto Way" Tracee Gluhaich 08 Oct 201900:45:43

More info about my guest:

My name is Tracee Gluhaich and I am an Integrative Health Coach and Personal Trainer in California. My new book. No Fricken Weigh! 21 Days to Ditch the Diet and Shed the Weight the Keto Way hit the stores on May 23rd and was #1 New Release

Nutrition is my passion and I have been a voracious student since 2007. I have been teaching fitness classes at our local YMCA since 2010 and personal training as well. My passion is teaching and inspiring women how to age stronger and ditch the old-fashioned dieting mentality. They can heal their bodies and reach their wellness goals by focusing on nourishing self-care and healthy fat whole foods. Currently, I have two podcasts of my own: Be Well, Be Keto and High Energy Girl.

NO FRICKEN WEIGH! 21 Days to Ditch the dieT; lose weight the keto way BY LOVING YOURSELF TO HEALTH

The first non-diet plan that focuses on healing foods and nourishing self-care. No counting calories or points, we mindfully eat what our bodies need and crowd out the crap. By filling your life with joyful activities and nourishing self-care, the need to stuff our emotions and fill the gaps with food disappears. The focus is on creating a lasting lifestyle change.

The crazy success of No Fricken Weigh proves that there is a demand for diets that are not deprivation based. Women are tired of starting the same program every Monday, only to get side-lined by Friday. And the ketogenic lifestyle is more than the current fad. The health benefits people have experienced, and the science supporting it, has proven its sustainability. Combining these two concepts is a unique way to create a healthier life.

No Fricken Weigh features 21 healing foods with recipes and 21 nourishing self-care practices that the reader can add into her week. It also uncovers false dogma that we believed, that made us fatter, sicker, and unhappy. By following the principles and journaling activities in the book, the reader can fill her life with healthy habits, implement the ketogenic lifestyle, and release the extra weight to achieve true health.

Episode 88: Interview with Fat Fueled Family's Danny & Maura Vega - We talk Carnivore, Fat Fueled Kids and MORE - Part 123 Jul 201900:51:06

Part One of my interview with Maura and Danny Vega!

Danny Vega:

I grew up in Miami, Florida and I have always been interested in nutrition and fitness. Ever since I was a young kid, I wanted to be a “strong man”.

In high school, I was the starting runningback for my football team, and led the county in rushing yards. I then went on to receive my bachelor’s degree from Columbia University in 2004, where I was a member of the football team and a three-time Dean’s List recipient. After college, I pursued my Master’s of Science in Human Performance from the University of Florida, where I worked with the national championship men’s basketball team, along with women’s basketball, tennis, and golf programs. I then went on to become the Strength & Conditioning coordinator for VCU basketball, helping the Rams win the 2007 conference championship and making it to the second round of the NCAA tournament. To read a Richmond Times Dispatch article on my approach, click here.

I have been out of collegiate Strength & Conditioning for almost a decade, but I have continued to compete in sports such as crossfit, powerlifting, half marathons, and now rowing. In June of 2016 I discovered the ketogenic lifestyle and I never looked back. I found so many benefits within a week of switching, that I knew this would be my new way of life. Inflammation and injuries from years of playing on turf and beating myself up with heavy lifting were gone. I regained control over my hunger and found a mental clarity and increase in productivity that I had never experienced before. In August of 2017, after over a year of dipping their toes in the water, our two boys joined us. Desmond, our eldest, felt an immediate increase in energy and improvement in his allergies and asthma. Dean, our youngest, has had astounding improvements in his eczema and mood. Our children are immune to cravings. It has been an amazing thing to see. We thought our kids were “picky” just like most kids supposedly are; keto changed their taste buds and now they crave real, nourishing food like the recipes you will find on this PDF. Best of all, they do not feel restricted in any way!

We understand that transitioning the family can be challenging, so we hope this blog helps you conveniently transition your entire family to a low carb lifestyle so that you, too, can experience all of the profound benefits we have!

Maura Vega:

I’m Maura Vega, or as many of you know me, Fat Fueled Mom. I grew up in Miami, Florida, and was a dancer for most of my life until I graduated high school. I was classically trained in ballet, jazz, and contemporary. I competed throughout high school winning multiple team and individual awards. I found my love for fitness once I graduated high school and started college. Unfortunately for me (a curvy latin girl), the body type that was in style back then was tall and thin. Being a dancer, there was always focus around the way I looked and I always longed to have that tall and thin figure. I’ve been dieting since high school and it has been quite the battle over the years. Eating disorders and body dysmorphia have plagued me for as long as I can remember. I’ve experimented with vegetarian, paleo, and IIFYM. It wasn’t until I found the ketogenic lifestyle that I was finally able to heal my body and repair my metabolism, as well as my mind and my relationship with food.

I started Keto in June of 2016. After a 2 year battle with Postpartum Depression after the birth of my youngest, I knew I had to make a change. I was eager to get off medications and I knew that the ketogenic lifestyle was my only hope. I have now been keto for almost 2 years and I’m happy to say that not only have my depression symptoms been drastically reduced, my anxiety has also improved, I feel the best I’ve ever felt and it continues to get better. Seeing how impactful this lifestyle can be on our bodies, I decided to help transition my children to this healthy way of life in hopes that it would relieve them of some of the ailments they had. I now eat for health and performance, and I never feel deprived. I haven’t binged or restricted food since I started back in June of 2016.

Our boys have now been keto for a little over 8 months and I’m happy to report that not only has my oldest found relief from his asthma and allergies, but we’ve also witnessed a major improvement in our little one’s mood and eczema. They are still kids, so they have treats at birthday parties and special occasions; we don’t want them to feel left out. However, we have seen how powerful keto is at fixing broken relationships with food. Our oldest rarely is phased by treats he passes by; he truly does not crave them. My little one spit out half of his Halloween candy last year because he didn’t like it. It is absolutely amazing to see these changes in my children, knowing that I’m setting them up for a lifetime of success.

I’m so happy that my family and I have found this amazing way of life. With our Fat Fueled Family blog, we hope to spread our love for keto to other families who have the same goals for their family by making it fun and easy!

We hope you enjoy our content, and we look forward to sharing our family’s journey with all of you!

Episode 84: Interview with "Bio Diet" author David G. Harper, PhD. where we cover diet & lifestyle and how to make lasting changes!25 Jun 201900:50:43

To sign up for my online Keto class that starts tomorrow, Wednesday, June 26, 2019! You still have time - go to www.ThatKetoBlonde.com/classes to get registered. Can't wait to see you there!

Today's interview with Dr. David G. Harper:

For 40 years, we have been slowly eating ourselves to death—and doing so based on outdates guidelines for what constitutes a healthy diet. This low-fat, high-carbohydrate grand experiment has led to epidemic increases in obesity and other chronic conditions, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and Alzheimer’s. Dr. David G. Harper is a health educator, professor, and cancer researcher. His new book, BioDiet: The Scientifically Proven, Ketogenic Way to Lose Weight and Improve Health (Page Two Books, May 7, 2019), offers a new, scientifically validated approach: a low-carbohydrate, high-fat, ketogenic plan that works with the body’s natural processes to improve health and reverse decades of damage caused by our collective carbohydrate addiction.  BioDiet isn’t a “diet” in the usual sense: it’s not a quick fix designed to help shed 10 pounds before beach season. Drawing on his professional experience and the latest research in nutritional science, David explains why BioDiet can result in the significant reduction, and sometimes even the elimination, of chronic disease by:

• reducing inflammation in the blood vessels, which causes heart disease; • lowering and stabilizing the high blood-glucose levels responsible for diabetes;  • reducing inflammation in the brain that contributes to Alzheimer’s disease; and   • reducing the glucose and insulin that promote the growth of cancer cells.    “Dr. Harper explains, in simple terms, the complex biological mechanisms involved in chronic disease and how diet change can have a profound healing effect.” — Jay Wortman, MD  DR. DAVID G. HARPER is an associate professor of kinesiology at the University of the Fraser Valley and a visiting scientist at the BC Cancer Research Center, Terry Fox Laboratory. He holds a PhD from the University of British Columbia and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in comparative physiology at the University of Cambridge. He is on the scientific advisory board of the Canadian Clinicians for Therapeutic Nutrition and is a member of the Institute for Personalized Therapeutic Nutrition.   Thank you for listening!   www.JessicaTye.com

Jessica answers a listener question:

Chad says;

"Hi Jessica. I'm a fourty year old man and I just started listening to your podcast. I love it. You provide such great information and stories. Thank you! I have a question that I haven't been able to find a direct answer for. I'm about three weeks into keto. I am also trying to do intermittent fasting plus exercise. I use the Carb Manager app to setup my macros and track my eating. The problem I'm running into is that I find it very hard to meet my macros especially with intermittent fasting. It’s a lot of fat and calories. Is this a problem, especially since I'm exercising? I’d also love to replace belly fat with more muscle so I’m not just looking to lose weight but rather lose belly fat and gain muscle. Is this even possible with Keto and intermittent fasting? I just can’t stuff so much food into my body in a small window of time."

Thank you for your question Chad - this was a great one!

Episode 82: Interview with "Guy Gone Keto" author and Steviva brands founder, Thom King where we talk all things Keto & micro-biome! 11 Jun 201901:04:26

Thom King

Hear first podcast interview with Thom and Jessica in episode #51 of the Keto Lifestyle Podcast.

Thom King founded Steviva Brands, now Icon Foods, in 1999 when his passion for food and his concern about the explosion of metabolic diseases united in a mission of providing consumers healthy alternatives to sugar.  His work is responsible for food manufacturers creating products that contain 50% - 90% fewer sugars by replacing sugar and high fructose corn syrup in their products!  In recent years, his passion for food and optimal health have intersected with his embrace of a ketogenic (low carb, high fat) diet. Thom’s latest project is a line of ketogenic condiments intended to help more people successfully adopt a healthier lifestyle (and they are SO good!).

The classic definition of success (lots of money) is not what inspires and motivates Thom.  His philosophy is “you aren’t doing well unless you’re also doing some good”. Thom’s first book, Guy Gone Keto, was released May 9, 2018.

  11. MCT oil – my favorite is Bulletproof brand’s “Brain Octane” great in everything from coffee to salads
  12. “Whisps” brand cheese crisps – you can add them to salads or soups in place of crackers or croutons or just each them as a snack if you need some crunch or something to dip in your guacamole. SO good!
  13. Red Rush 360 Red Light therapy system – for everything from reducing cortisol to speeding workout recovery time, 10-15 minutes a day in front of this baby can do wonders for your overall health and lifestyle.
  14. Defender Shield cell phone case – decrease the mitochondria destroying EMFs coming from your phone and help to keep them from wrecking your hormones
  15. Zevia naturally flavored sparkling waters sweetened with stevia – includes familiar flavors like “root beer”, “ginger ale”, “grape”, “cola”, Dr. Zevia and more! If you are having a hard time giving up soda – make the switch to these.

Episode 80: 7 Days to Starting your new Keto Lifestyle! Just one change a day can have you starting keto the "right" way for lasting results! 21 May 201900:37:16

7 Days to beginning your new keto lifestyle – Just add one change a day and have a whole week of new lifestyle changes in places at the end of the week and you are ready to dive into your new Keto lifestyle!

Day 1: Take Measurements and “Before” pics!

This may not be something you want to do, but this can be so super helpful in the beginning of a health or weight loss journey. Whether you are looking to “get healthier”, lose weight or gain muscle, measuring your progress is super helpful. Don’t rely on the scale whose numbers can be super deceiving as it can’t tell you when you have lost fat, but gained muscle (muscle weighs more) so you can be disappointed in a number that ultimately means nothing.

Measure your bust/chest, waist, hips and take pictures. Weigh yourself if you must, but do not judge your new lifestyle by that number.

Day 2: Start a Journal!

Journal every night or every morning, but just make sure you’re journaling.  This is a great place to keep your measurements, write down how you feel each day, keep track of what you are grateful for (so you can focus on that when things get tough because it always does when you are trying to make big changes!), write down what you ate and how it seemed to be affecting you, etc.

Day 3: No more sweets!

Cut out all sugars, artificial or natural sweeteners, cookies, candies, sugar sweetened drinks, fruit juices, all fruits, alcohol including wine, gums and mints. Getting these out of your life will help you be successful in your new lifestyle.  I often advise clients that they can add some of these back in moderation, but when starting Keto and helping your body become adapted it is best to quit them all cold turkey!

Day 4: Drink more H2O!

Ideally you will drink ½ your body weight in ounces daily (if you weight 150lbs drink 75 ounces daily).  However, do not exceed 128oz per day. If you drink coffee or tea then you will need to drink 1.5x that amount of ounces in addition to your normal daily ounces count. Often our cravings and “hunger” is simply caused due to thirst.  Make sure to head that off by drinking at least the amount you need every day. And if a craving does hit that is a good time to drink some water. Having a hard time remembering when to drink? Place a color hair band or rubber band (loose fitting of course!) on your wrist for every 8oz glass that you need to consume every day. Remove a band when you have consumed that glass. When you get to the end of the day your wrist should be bare – if it isn’t then you know you need to drink up!

Day 5: Get good Sleep!

This is a super important step that is so often overlooked. Did you know that if you are overly tired you will have a very hard time making the right dietary choices? It is a fact that when we are sleep deprived our brains will tell us to get quick fuel in the form of glucose and that is exactly what you are trying NOT to do. Sleep deprivation can also cause us to have naturally elevated levels of glucose which will cause elevated insulin production and ultimately lead to reduced levels of ketones.  Try going to bed around the same time every night and getting up around the same time every morning (within and hour). This will help to set your circadian rhythm and will begin to make it easier for you to fall asleep and to wake in the morning.

Day 6: Start tracking your macros!

The general guidelines to get you into ketosis effectively is 70/25/5 – that’s 70% fat, 25% protein and 5% carbs.  Keep in mind that this is not exactly the same for everyone, but it is a good place to start so at least you have a starting place. To track you want to download an app that will calculate your macros based on what you type in as your meals. I like “Carb Manager”, but there are many. Download a couple and decide what you like best.  The idea is to make sure you accurately track everything you eat into the program so you can see where you need to tweak your intake to achieve the “right” numbers. Keep in mind that without my “Day 7” tip you will have no way to know if what you are tracking is working to get you into and keep you in ketosis!

Day 7: Test your ketone levels!

How can you know that you are in ketosis unless you test? You can’t!  This is where many people mess up. They think they are doing everything “right”. They have read that you eat a certain ratio of macros, that you eat a certain amount of fats and that you do intermittent fasting and so as long as you do those things according to what you read on the internet, then you MUST be in ketosis, but that is just Flat. Out. Wrong.   What worked or is working for all those people telling you how to do it on the internet may or may not work for you. And this is not telling you to use the urine strips to test – don’t!  I am not going to get into all the reasons they don’t work especially long term, but just know that they don’t. I prefer blood testing over anything. There are different devices on the market that work like a glucometer (many function to measure glucose, as well, using a different strip) and any of them is fine. Just find one, learn how to use it and start testing.  What numbers are you looking for?  Really anything above .5mml means you are producing ketones. Striving to get closer to 1.0-2.0mml may be better, but I know some individuals that never get above 1.0mml lose weight, have health issue resolve and feel great so just find what works for you.  Once you know what “being in ketosis” feels like and you have confirmed it with the meter then I would just test every now and then to make sure what you are doing is still working. Our bodies are constantly changing and we will need to change up what we are doing from time to time to optimize our results.

Good luck and thank you for listening!

Episode 79: When your doctor tells you that your "Cholesterol is high" on your ketogenic diet and what all those numbers really mean!01 May 201900:49:47

In this episode Jessica responds to listeners questions about being told that their cholesterol numbers are high while they are on a keto diet and specifically addresses a client who is concerned about their most recent test scores.

How do you know what all those numbers mean and how to talk with your doctor when you feel amazing, but they are telling you that you need to stop eating meat, fat and cholesterol?!

Here is a quick reference range for your basic lipid panel:

(provided by Dr. Sinatra - 40 years as a cardiologists and author of The Cholesterol Myth)

  • HDL cholesterol levels: 40–90 mg/dL for women; 35–90 mg/dL for men
  • LDL cholesterol level: 80–130 mg/dL
  • Triglyceride level: 50–100 mg/dL

Episode 78: "Good" & "Bad" foods in your Keto Lifestyle via a listener question PLUS how to fuel your child/teen athlete with nutrient dense low carb WHOLE FOODS! 16 Apr 201901:00:05

Jessica addresses this email that came in from a listener:

"Dear Jessica, Good morning. I am sitting here in my living room this morning crying in my coffee. I feel like I am out of control with my diet. I have been low carb for 3.5 years and lost 63 pounds (I started at 216.) I have since gained about 8 pounds and I can’t get it off. I am 46 years old and I am majorly stressing over my food choices. Confession... I have had at least one bad meal a week since thanksgiving. I know that’s what my problem is but I can’t get it under control. I do great during the week and fail on the weekends. I try to IF but I literally get sick a lot of times if I try to stretch to 16 hours. When I do good, I have bacon and eggs for breakfast, no snacks and lunch is usually a pc of chicken or a ground beef patty with added butter and a veggie. Dinner is usually a salad with spring mix, a little tomato, Parmesan, roasted pecans, 1 tablespoon of olive oil and two tablespoons of marzetti all natural ranch dressing. I am done for the day after dinner. What can I do to get back on and stay in track? This a lifestyle not a fad diet. I can’t afford to hire a private coach so I am at this alone. I don’t know of any low carb doctors or dieticians in my area so I have no one to turn to. I don’t do social media so that knocks out any help there. I am scared to trust just anyone. I listen to your podcast so I turned to you once again. "

PLUS we address teen/child athlete nutrition and lifestyle choices and how we, as parents, can help influence them in the most healthful ways possible.

Finally, below is the calculations for BMR, as discussed. If you would prefer to not do these calculations and have our FitScan scanner do it for you don't hesitate to schedule your appointment. If you are working on make changes to your physique through diet and lifestyle this is THE way to track your progress and know exactly how much you really should be eating to get the results you want!

You can schedule here at a discount just for being a listener of this podcast! Type the code "KETO LIFESTYLE" into the "notes" section when you book your scan: https://go.oncehub.com/Fit3DScan

To Manually Calculate BMR:

BMR/RMR – energy required to maintain body systems and control body temperature at rest (Harris-Benedict Equation)

Males: BMR = 66.5 + (13.75 x weight/kg) + (5.0 x height/cm) – (6.76 x age/years)

Females: BMR = 655.1 + (9.56 x weight/kg) + (1.85 x height/cm) – (4.68 x age/years)

Ex: 18 year old female weighs 55kg and is 175 cm tall

655.1+(525.8)+(323.75)-(84.24)=1420.41 (1420 calories)

But THEN you need to figure out your TER (total Energy requirement) based on PALs……….

Physical activity levels (PALs)

Little to no exercise: TER = BMR × 1.2 Light exercise (1–3 days per week): TER = BMR × 1.375 Moderate exercise (3–5 days per week): TER = BMR × 1.55 Heavy exercise (6–7 days per week): TER = BMR × 1.725 Very heavy exercise (twice per day, extra heavy workouts): TER = BMR × 1.9

Same 18 y/o female trains 6 days a week:

TER= 1420 x 1.725 = 2449.5 calories per day
