443: Philip Hinchcliffe discusses the inside of the TARDIS11 Sep 202400:32:03
We've had a few weeks' rest and recuperation but we're now back with a rare pleasure: former Doctor Who producer Philip Hinchcliffe (1974-1977)!

There is a bit of a story behind this one. Back in 2018, Gareth Kavanagh invited James McLean and Christian Cawley to do some live podcasting and panel interviews at the VworpCon event, held at the PrintWorks in Manchester.

Philip Hinchcliffe was supposed to be one of several guests on a panel discussing the TARDIS and its evolution throughout Doctor Who's history, but on the day the dice didn't roll quite as planned.

As a result, James ended up with just Philip Hinchcliffe, along with a few technical challenges. However, thanks to AI audio fixes and judicious editing by Christian, we've ended up with quite an interesting - and rare - chat with Philip, who gives some quite unique answers and stories on a topic that he doesn't usually get drawn on.

Enjoy!

442: How Doctor Who events have evolved over the decades21 Aug 202400:31:27
Over the past few years, we've had the chance to attend all manner of Doctor Who events. It's fair to say that the whole world of conventions and interactive experiences has evolved considerably.

From Dimensions 2005 to VworpCon in 2018, and The Crash of the Elysium to Escape Hunt: A Dalek Awakens, we've been very fortunate to have attended a whole host of different events. They have covered different sizes of venues, different types of guests, and offered a wealth of differing experiences.

This week, Christian Cawley and James McLean discuss how Doctor Who events have evolved over the decades. We also discuss A Dalek Awakens, an escape room experience in Norwich, which James was fortunate enough to visit recently.

Well, there is only one way to find out. (Actually two, but unless you're prepared to track down James and Magnus and ask them face-to-face, listening to this podcast is your best option.)

Christian Cawley, James McLean, and Gareth Kavanagh take a look through the space-time visualizer at Doctor Who movies that were never made. Listen in for our thoughts on:
  • The Chase/Keys of Marinus
  • Doctor Who Meets Scratchman
  • Doctor Who and the Krikkitmen
  • Paramount's Michael Jackson-starring Doctor Who movie
  • Last of the Time Lords

  • Sony leak movie plans
And, as seems to be the regular pattern these days, some thoughts about where Doctor Who as we now know it can go next. Could an MCU-style cinematic Doctor Who-verse be the future?

In a special one-off return for a chat podcast, Doctor Who cosplayer Brian A. Terranova tells Christian Cawley about the research into his remarkable history of the RTD era sonic screwdriver, available to download as a free PDF.

We can't possibly discuss everything about the PDF in this little box of text, but suffice to say Brian has been researching the device for over a decade, collecting replicas, analyzing photos and screen caps, and learning as much as possible about it.

The end result is the PDF download, free to anyone, which we discuss in our latest podcast.

After all, Disney didn't have a hand in Caravan of Courage, did they?

Yes, it had a talking frog, and no, we didn't hate it. Well, not totally. But what could have got on the nerves of a particular member of the podKast team?

Could it be the Graham Williams era feel of the conclusion? Or the despicable act of the girl's father?

Or is it Sharon D Clarke's Sheffield "accent"?

Go on, have a guess!

311: Why You Should Be Watching Doctor Who on Twitch.tv06 Jun 201800:51:07

An incredible new phenomenon within the world of Doctor Who has occurred. Fans around the planet are watching the show online via free streaming service Twitch.tv. Known more widely as a platform for esports streaming, the Amazon-owned service, more colloquially known simply as Twitch, is streaming Doctor Who's first 26 years, from 100,000 BC to episode 4 of Survival. Fans can simply visit the site and start watching!

Better still, this streaming service offers live text chat. What this adds to old episodes of Doctor Who that you've seen again and again is the benefit of new eyes, of youth. Many of the current viewers are millennials, largely fans of the modern show. They have their own interpretations, different frames of reference, and most importantly, no knowledge of the flaming that the early years of the show received throughout the 1980s and 90s.

In this week's podKast, Christian Cawley and James McLean watch episodes one and two of The Enemy of the World, and discuss just why everyone should be watching Doctor Who on Twitch.
