| 214 Out of Fresh Podcast Topics Ideas? Do This Instead... | 23 Jul 2024 | 00:07:07 | |
Struggling to keep your podcast fresh? The secret might just be repetition! Discover why revisiting your core topics can boost your authority and keep listeners coming back for more. Ever feel like you're running out of new ideas for your podcast? You're not alone. Many podcasters hit a wall, thinking they need fresh topics all the time. Here’s the kicker: you don’t. It’s not about reinventing the wheel; it’s about reinforcing your message. Most of your listeners haven’t heard every episode. They didn’t start at episode #1 and follow religiously. Even your super-fans don’t remember everything. So, repeating topics isn’t just okay—it’s essential. It reinforces your message, aids comprehension, and solidifies your authority. Imagine explaining a concept multiple times in different ways—using new analogies, fresh takes, or case studies. This repetition helps listeners fully grasp and retain your message. Plus, it establishes you as the go-to expert in your field. And think about this: when people search for solutions online, they look at multiple sources. You want to be that recurring expert who shows up in their search results, not just a one-time hit. Running a business means solving your ideal customer’s problems. You don’t have to constantly innovate new solutions. Stay in your lane, solve that one problem exceptionally well, and keep attracting new listeners. Recycle and revamp your old topics with new insights and perspectives. It’s not about dazzling your audience with novelty every time but ensuring they understand and remember your core messages. | 206 Is a Podcast Award Nomination a Sign of Success? | 02 Apr 2024 | 00:07:44
Congratulations!!! You've been nominated for a podcast award (←that was me last month!). Would you consider yourself a podcasting success? Seems like an easy answer, but it's not. Success in podcasting - especially if you're an entrepreneur - isn't just about accolades or download numbers; it's about leveraging your platform to achieve your business goals. In this episode, we'll explore why chasing big download numbers might not be the best approach for every podcaster. I'll share insights from my own journey and real-life success stories from entrepreneurs who have redefined podcasting success on their terms. Just like preparing a nutritious meal, your podcast should provide value and nourishment to your audience, rather than just focusing on superficial metrics. I also highlight the various ways podcasting can benefit entrepreneurs, from building authority and attracting quality leads to driving sales and boosting search rankings - even with small numbers. It's about creating meaningful connections and making a lasting impact in your niche. This is all especially true if you are podcasting for your business (instead of as a business — if you don't know the difference, I explain it all in episode 75) Now, about that Ambie award nomination for the show I produce and edit, (Big Lash Energy)... it was a stark reminder that while it's nice to be nominated, it is not the end-all-be-all in podcasting success. It was a very nice feather in podcaster Jayna Marie's hat but her picture of success is oh so much bigger than this award! She is on her own path and by the way... she's the real deal! Need some help determining what success looks like for your podcast? Maybe you need some help getting to that success. Let's connect and discuss how we can turn your podcasting dreams into reality. | 205 Podcast Script Tips: How to Improve Your Delivery and Performance | 19 Mar 2024 | 00:06:40
Great scripts can flop or flourish - the difference is in the delivery. And, the secret to a well-delivered script is what you're looking at when you read. In this episode, I'm sharing my top tips for marking up your script to get you the best, most engaging performance possible. This is the art of script delivery and it's a game-changer for any podcaster. Learn how to transform your scripts from dull to dynamic with insider secrets I've gleaned from over 30 years in broadcasting. Whether you're scripting top to tail or just framing your episodes with my Oreo Cookie method (check out episode 10 for more), I'll show you how to deliver like a seasoned pro. First up, let's write like we speak. Forget fancy writing – we're all about authenticity here! Embrace contractions, dropped g's, and misspellings to capture your natural voice. Now, let's talk punctuation. It's not just for grammar nerds – it's your secret weapon for a killer performance. Add extra commas, slashes, and exclamation points to guide your delivery and keep your audience hooked. Anything that catches your eye and reminds you to... take... your... time! Say goodbye to chunky paragraphs and hello to readability! Break up your script into bite-sized chunks to make it easier to digest and deliver. Write out numbers and punctuations to avoid tripping up during your delivery. For example, my script don't have 'visit podcastperformancecoach.com' – it's 'visit podcast performance coach dot com'. Keep it smooth, keep it flowing! Grab a pen and mark up your script like a pro! Underline important words, add exclamation points, arrows – whatever helps you deliver your message with passion and conviction. Can't print your script? No problem! Use digital tools like bolding, italics, and emojis to mark up your script and enhance your delivery. And here's a little trick I learned early on – restart and repeat! After recording your full script, swing right back to the beginning and restart your read without stopping (like in episode 133). It's a surefire way to warm up and get into your flow for a flawless performance that sounds just as good out of the gate as it does on the CTA at the end. Ready to take your podcast to the next level? Implement these tips in your next recording and watch your audience grow. | 202 What's the Most Powerful Way to Start a Podcast Interview? | 06 Feb 2024 | 00:05:41
Don't Blow Your Interview with the First Question! Instead, Captivate Your Audience from the Start In this episode, I want to convince you to NEVER start an episode with a LAME question again becasue it's killing your podcast. Have you ever used these open-ended fluff-questions like, 'How did you get started?' 'Tell us about yourself' and 'What got you into this?' They're generic, bore our listeners, and leave your guest floundering. These open-ended prompts lead to messy answers and uninteresting narratives. Let me break down all of the reasons to skip generic questions in your podcast interviews:
Start with a direct question that delivers immediate value to your listener. Grab their attention with the most important information right away. Remember, you're the host, guide the conversation towards what matters most to the listener. Pro Tip: Ask personal history questions during the pre-interview, then use that knowledge to craft insightful interview questions that showcase your expertise and set your guest up for success. And, don't worry - this approach doesn't mean you can't ask the background questions. You can get their origin story or their background later - once the listener actually cares about them because they've gotten valuable information or ideas. By following these tips, you can:
Remember, interviewing skills are something to be honed over time. Pay attention to the questions you ask, how you respond, and make sure that you represent your listener every step of the way (the conversation is for them, after all). But most importantly, start strong with an intentional question right out of the gate you know is going to deliver value to your listener. Should you put ads in your podcast if the whole point is to increase your authority and drive traffic to your business? Normally, it's a steadfast Heck No from me but I've got one caveat: dynamic ads. In this episode, I explain how dynamic ads can increase your podcast ROI without compromising your message or your brand integrity. Many of my clients have made the switch and it's given me a lot of insight into how to optimize this tool while staying on track with your podcast mission. Here are the best practices that I share (in greater detail) in this episode: 1. Be Intentional: Avoid ads without a purpose. 2. Keep It Short: Engage without interrupting. 3. | 196 How to Benefit the Most from Podcast Guest Exchanges | 14 Nov 2023 | 00:07:14
Podcast guest exchanges can be a powerful marketing strategy — when done right. You've probably heard about the benefits of exchanging guest appearances, but let's face it, it's not always smooth sailing. In this episode, I guide you through the intricacies so you can optimize guest exchange opportunities, without wasting your precious time. So, what exactly is a podcast guest exchange? It's when you invite someone to your show, and they reciprocate by inviting you to be on their show. It's a mutual sharing of audiences. But beware, not all exchanges are a match made in heaven. Here are a few mismatches to watch out for. Mismatch Flag #1: Ensure your guest exchange brings value to your audience. Your audience is your currency, so don't jeopardize their trust by featuring someone who doesn't have something of value to offer them. Mismatch Flag #2: Consider if the other show's audience aligns with your content. It's a two-way street – make sure you can provide value to their audience, as well. Mismatch Flag #3: Evaluate the quality and size of the other podcast. Yes, this is a tiny bit of podcast snobbery but if you don't have all the time in the world then this is important. A significant audience gap or a mismatch in niche and quality could impact the success of the exchange. If there aren't any mismatch flags then here are a few more tips to get the most out of the guest exchange. Before you dive in, define your goals. Are you looking to grow your audience, leverage someone else's authority, or align with a specific niche? Knowing your objectives will help you assess each offer strategically. Remember, not every proposed exchange has to be reciprocal. If it doesn't align with your goals, it's okay to decline. Be clear on expectations, especially around promotion, to ensure a fair and balanced collaboration. And here's a pro tip: clarity in communication, including email correspondence, is key. Whether you're pitching or receiving requests, setting expectations upfront ensures a successful exchange. The key to satisfying guest swapping is going in with open wide eyes, having a clear goal, and a discerning mindset. Your podcast is your brand, and you don't want to compromise it just to get on more shows. You don't have to say yes to every opportunity; prioritize quality over quantity. If you found this tip valuable, hit that follow or subscribe button. It lets me know you're serious about podcasting. And if you're podcasting for your business or considering starting one, check out my coaching packages to kickstart or revamp your show. | 195 Your Podcast's Critical First Impression (and How to Nail It) | 31 Oct 2023 | 00:07:38
Will your listener's first impression of your podcast also be their last? You only get one chance for a first impression. **The Listener's Journey: It Starts Before They Press Play** Your listener's journey kicks off long before they even hit that play button. They're on a quest, seeking an expert or a solution to their specific problem. They're turning to platforms like Google, YouTube, and, of course, podcasts. It's the same way most of my clients find their way to me when they're ready to launch a show or make their existing podcast even better. Your potential audience is out there, searching for content that can address the very challenges your business solves. The question is, will they find you? **The Gift of a New Perspective - My Listener Journey** I recently celebrated my 50th birthday and decided it was time for a health checkup. High cholesterol runs in my family, and I was determined to explore alternatives before resorting to medication. So, I did what any curious person would do – I started my research journey. I'm sharing my firsthand experience navigating the world of cholesterol experts through various podcasts, both individual episodes and longer-running series. **The Good, the Bad, and the AI-Generated** My search revealed a spectrum of podcast options. As I explored, I couldn't help but put myself in the shoes of a listener actively searching for a podcast. Some of these podcasts turned out to be AI-generated, even AI-hosted. Frankly, they were quite underwhelming. From robots defining cholesterol to incoherent synthetic voices, it was far from the quality content I was seeking. There were also human-hosted podcasts that promised more episodes but ended up as one-off endeavors, leaving me with a sense of disappointment and frustration. A bad first impression is often the last impression. **Long-Lasting Shows: Titles Tell the Tale** I decided to give longer-lasting podcasts a chance, sifting through their episode titles and descriptions. What I discovered was that these elements revealed a lot about the show's stance on medication, hidden agendas, and their overall approach. This process solidified the concepts I've discussed on this podcast about the listener's journey. **The Listener Journey is Not Linear** The key takeaway here is that podcast listeners don't follow a linear path. They won't necessarily start with episode one and work their way through sequentially. Until they get to know, like, and trust you, they'll cherry-pick content based on their immediate interests. This is why your podcast library should be a treasure trove of valuable, relevant content that caters to their needs and establishes you as the go-to authority for solving their problems. **Step into Your Listener's Shoes** As a podcaster, you can harness the power of my experiences as a listener embarking on a quest to solve a new problem. The key is to put yourself in your listener's shoes. Imagine the circumstances that trigger their search for your expertise. What keywords are they entering into their search bar on Google, Bing, or their favorite podcast platform? The ultimate goal: be discoverable, the first step to winning over your audience. **Master That First Impression** Once your potential listener finds you, it's essential to make a strong first impression. Consider the artwork, the podcast's description, and the episode titles. Do they accurately represent what you have to offer? Does your podcast library feel cohesive and demonstrate your expertise? Remember, you might not get a second chance to make a lasting impression. **Respect Their Time and Don't Sound Like Junk** When your listener presses play, it's make or break time. As a listener, I'm not only assessing the content but also the audio quality. More importantly, I'm looking for hosts who respect my time. Podcast listeners have certain standards, and they expect you to deliver valuable content efficiently. **Would You Pass My Test?** Here's a challenge for you – test your discoverability and evaluate the effectiveness of your first impression. Put yourself in your listener's shoes, especially when they're triggered to seek out your expertise. Can they find you? What do they see when they discover your podcast? How does your content sound, and is it engaging enough to hold their attention? **Elevate Your Podcasting Game** Understanding the listener's journey and the significance of first impressions is paramount in the world of podcasting. By embracing these principles, you can create content that positions you at the top of the search results and keeps your audience coming back for more. If you find that your podcast needs a tune-up to improve its discoverability and first impression, I'm here to help. | 194 5 Mistakes Podcasters Make with Their Microphone (and How to Fix Them) | 17 Oct 2023 | 00:09:08
I have 5 key tips on how you master your microphone and make your show sound even better. Sorry if this bruises your ego but they're probably multitasking while listening to your podcast. They could be doing household chores, walking the dog, or commuting. If they have to strain to hear what you're saying, your podcast instantly becomes annoying. Was that your goal? No, no it wasn't. So, let's stop annoying your listener and give them the sound quality they deserve! In this episode, I break down the top 5 mistakes podcasters make with their microphones and, most importantly, how to correct them. Mistake number 1: Using wireless mics. I'll tell you upfront; it's a no-go for professional podcasting. But you don't need to break the bank on a fancy microphone. All we're aiming for is clean and clear audio quality, and an $80 Dynamic USB mic does the job. Dynamic mics are more forgiving and perfect for podcasting. I recommend starting with a Samson QU2 or the Audio-Technica ATR 2100. The key is that they are wired into your recording device. Mistake number 2: Using your microphone incorrectly. Different microphones require different techniques. You must know what kind of mic you have and how to use it. Mic placement is critical, so much, it was my FIRST EPISODE and you can find more information on this in my YouTube videos. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuQxy7shV3Y https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0W7B7kxQdmc Mistake number 3: Not using a pop filter. Those plosives and breathiness can be real show-stoppers. Think about your listeners using earbuds or noise-canceling headphones; every 'P' you pop feels like a punch to the ear. Invest in a pop screen or a foam muff for your microphone, or better yet, get both! Mistake number 4: not paying attention to your microphone settings. If you ignore this, you might end up recording with the laptop's onboard mic, and that's brutal. Test, for the love of podcast gods, test! Here's how a pen can help: https://podcastperformancecoach.com/124-three-reasons-great-podcasters-want-to-have-a-pen-handy/ Mistake number 5: Not being mic-aware. You don't want to drift away from the mic as you record. Pay attention to your microphone's placement. Know where the mic is in relation to your mouth. Check out episode 166 for more: https://podcastperformancecoach.com/166-how-to-avoid-the-annoying-podcast-mic-fade/ And remember, these 5 mistakes apply to your guests too. It's YOUR job to make sure they know how to use their microphones correctly. Listen to how they sound, test, and guide them before hitting the record button. If they drift off or start to sound off, pause the interview and fix it. Don't make your listeners choose between annoyance and not listening. Do your listeners a favor and care about their listening experience. It will make you sound better and increase the chances that they become fans and customers. Your authority and credibility are on the line. So, make sure you use the right microphone, learn how to use it correctly, including using a pop screen, test it every time, and stay mic-aware. Make sure your guests adhere to the same standards. There's no excuse for putting your listener in a position where they have to decide between not listening or being annoyed by your poor audio quality. If you feel like your show could sound better but you're not sure what needs to be addressed, I can help in less than 15 minutes. I could probably troubleshoot your issue in 15 seconds. But I'll give you the full 15 minutes or more when you take me up on my FREE podcast Coaching call. Let's get you sounding like a pro. Get on my Calendar: https://calendly.com/timwohlberg

| 193 5 Content Hacks So You Never Run Out of Podcast Episode Topics | 03 Oct 2023 | 00:07:18 | |
Have you ever thought 'I'm going to run out of podcast topics!'? Maybe it's kept you from launching a podcast? Ideas-endurance is a real concern. But, if you think you could only come up with 20 topics, hit play! In this episode, I share how to transform those initial 20 topics into a limitless fountain of on-brand, purposeful content. The goal? Making your podcast a major marketing powerhouse. Here's the thing: If you're using your podcast to build authority, you don't need 200 diverse topics. In fact, you shouldn't. It's tempting to showcase the vastness of your knowledge, but that doesn't serve your listeners or business. If you want to be the authority on a topic and the solution to someone's problem then dive deep into what your audience seeks. Want to keep things fresh while consistently delivering on your core competency? Here's my approach: 1. Analogies: Like how Geraldine Carter used a Rubik's Cube to explain a core concept, refreshing analogies make old content feel new. Hit play to learn more. 2. Real-world examples: Share client stories or case studies. They're powerful and breathe new life into your main messages. 3. Perspective shift: Rotate your idea, and inspect it from different angles, even from the misunderstood viewpoints. 4. Lists: Break down ideas into list formats; each list item can be a new episode! Oh, and so can the list itself. And, the list items can also have lists. And so on, and so on... 5. Conversations: Invite guests to share their perspectives. Your client's experiences can also rejuvenate ideas shared in past episodes. Your podcast shouldn't be about constantly sharing new topics. It's about revisiting core ones with a fresh take. Your message stays consistent, and every new listener gets a chance to engage with your core insights. Remember, for some, it might take multiple episodes to truly grasp your message. When they do, they'll realize how invaluable your insights are. Don't fret about constantly innovating topics. Revamp and revitalize your core ones. Your audience will appreciate it, and your business will flourish. | 191 Top 5 Productivity Tips You Should be Doing Right Now with Your Podcast | 05 Sep 2023 | 00:07:04
Suddenly, your podcast has turned into a time-sucking monster. Let's tackle the common woe with my top 5 podcast productivity tips. Finding efficiencies and production hacks comes up from time to time with our clients so it was no surprise when one of them (who recently ushered a tiny human into the world) as for some tips. Juggling everything with her business, parenthood, and podcasting was suddenly feeling like too much but there was no way she was giving up her best lead generator. The solution? Amping up efficiency. Here's the good news — don't need to be sleep-deprived from baby duties to benefit from a sleeker production process.
Here are my top 5 tips for improving podcast productivity:
1. Plan More and Better Our first stop on the journey to podcasting efficiency: planning ahead like a seasoned pro. I've got a gem for you – a 90-day content calendar. Imagine having a roadmap for your podcasting escapade, knowing precisely what lies ahead and when. This isn't just about rescuing time from the clutches of chaos; it's about tapping into a wellspring of creative energy. When you're not grappling with last-minute decisions, your creative juices flow effortlessly, like a river surging after a spring rain. 2. Embrace The AI Revolution Ah, AI – the contemporary magician of efficiency. Embrace AI as your trusty sidekick. This technological marvel isn't just for whipping up recipes with your pantry staples (though it's surprisingly good at that). AI can propel your podcasting game to unparalleled heights. Use AI to brainstorm topic ideas, craft script outlines, suggest interview questions, and even handle post-production tasks like show notes, transcripts, and social media content. Can you tell if this was AI-generated? For a deep dive into this AI wonderland, don't miss episodes 175, 176, and the AI-hosted episode in between. 3. Unleash Your Inner Producer It's time to channel the producer's mindset. It all starts with pre-interview preparation. The time invested here translates into time saved during the interview and editing. During interviews, start a clock when you hit record then, armed with a trusty pen and paper, jot down notes – what to keep, feature, chop — this will streamline your editing process. Even for solo shows, this rule still holds – production notes are your best way to track pickups, best takes, and even promotional snippets. Doing this will save you a mountain of time during editing and promotion. 4. Have Systems, Dammit. Life is simply more beautiful with systems in place. I could do a whole episode on this topic alone. (Interested? Let me know!) But for now, here's a sneak peek. The crown jewel of systems is your file management. Every file has to have a home. Create a folder system that houses each show, its assets, and all recorded elements, each episode basking in its well-organized haven. And don't underestimate time blocking; it's not just for the corporate realm. Block out your schedule, set deadlines for pivotal production components, and establish a hub for seamless team communication. And don't forget templates! Whether it's your production blueprint, episode outlines, show notes, or even email and social media templates – they're the secret to saving time and maintaining consistency. 5. Master the Art of Batch Recording Imagine if you could get the savings of a Costco spree, and apply it to your podcast production time. That's the power of bulk, baby. In the podcast world, it's called batch recording. When you're not operating from a permanent studio, this technique is pure gold. Record multiple interviews or solo shows in a single session. Here's a pro tip: sync this strategy with batching other production elements like script outlines, research, or email outreach. Your vocal stamina might be the only limit, but you'll soon find your groove. That One Shortcut That's a No-Go Now, let's talk about a contentious shortcut: AI-driven editing. I'm not on board with this one. AI-edited content often feels robotic, with every breath and natural pause scrubbed away. Real people breathe, they hesitate, they say 'um' and 'ah.' If you're considering AI for the heavy lifting, that's fine – as long as you or your editor fine-tune the results. After investing so much time and effort into your show, the last thing you want is for your listeners to question your authenticity. Whether it's a newborn or just life in general that's sucking up your time - efficiency is your trusty ally. Apply these tips: craft your plan, welcome AI, embrace your inner producer, build solid systems, and wield the art of batch recording. And don't forget – maintain your authenticity by keeping those edits human. Hungry for more? Eager to unlock my treasure trove of templates and time-saving systems? You're in luck! We cover all of this in both of our coaching programs – the Concept to Casting Podcast Launch Program and the Podcast Tune-Up. Intrigued? Snag your free 15-minute coaching session with me. | 190 Should You Start A Podcast for Your Personal Brand | 22 Aug 2023 | 00:06:16
If you've got a personal brand, having a podcast is like adding rocket fuel to your brand's growth. But hold on, even if you're rocking a podcast already, there's gold in this episode for you too. Freelancers and service-based businesses, you're not left out – dive in, because I'm about to reveal the ultimate ways a podcast can transform your brand's destiny. First things first, let's set the stage. When I say "personal brand," I'm talking about that business driven by the magnetic force of one person – that's you! Your expertise, your flair, your values – they're the foundation of your business. Let's break it down. A solid personal brand means: 1. Being Remarkable: You're known for something that sets you apart. 2. Radiating Personality: Your charm resonates and sticks. 3. Staying On-Point: Your message is consistent across the board. 4. Putting Skills on Display: You're the go-to authority in your niche. 5. Building Bonds: You're cultivating loyal relationships with your ideal customers. Podcasting? Oh, it's the ace up your sleeve that nails all these goals and more.
Why Podcasting is Your Brand's Bestie 1. Master of Expertise and Authority: Your podcast is your megaphone for expertise. It's where you shine, flaunting your knowledge and cementing your authority. 2. Unleash Consistency and Authenticity: Your podcast is your arena. It's where you show up, be yourself, and passionately tackle topics you love. Your audience connects with your authenticity. 3. Forge Personal Connections: Podcasting is intimate. Listeners tune in, often one-on-one. Your passion ignites a connection, and familiarity breeds liking, trust, and loyalty. That? It's a goldmine for leads and sales. 4. Harmony with Your Brand: But here's the kicker – your podcast has to jive with your brand's core. If it's not echoing your expertise, authority, or true personality, it won't propel your brand – it might even hold it back.
Podcasting is a Marathon, Not a Sprint. You're in it for the long game. Podcasting is no quick win; it's about building relationships and enduring connections. That's why consistency is key.
Existing Podcasters, This One's for You Too If you're already podcasting with a personal brand, don't rest on your laurels. Take a deep dive into your podcast's impact. Is it driving your brand? Or is it lagging behind? Remember, podcasting is just one gear in the marketing machine. The veterans still in the game? They're here because they stuck with it and it's working. | 189 The 3 Parts of a Powerful Podcast Call to Action | 08 Aug 2023 | 00:06:33
You want action? You better ask for action. And you better ask right! I'm talking about the keys to dropping an effective call to action in your podcast. You know, it's surprising how often I come across podcasters who either skip or mess up the call to action in their shows. So, let's fix that! I've talked about the importance of the Call to Action before but today, I'm arming you with the tools you need to make your CTAs more effective. There are three critical components to include in every CTA: Why, What, and How. First up is the "Why." Don't underestimate the power of this part. If you want your listeners to take action, you must tell them why. What's in it for them? Remember, it's not about you; it's about what benefits they'll get. If they understand the value they'll gain, they're more likely to act. Next comes the "What." Never assume your audience knows what action to take. Be crystal clear about the specific action you want them to perform – whether it's visiting your website, subscribing, downloading, or anything else. And finally, we have the "How." This is about going the extra mile to explain precisely how to take that action. A simple "download" won't cut it. Be detailed and make sure they know the exact steps to follow. When you provide clarity, your listeners will feel taken care of, and that's what we all want, right? Now, here's a little secret: your call to action isn't always about sales. Sure, it could be, but it doesn't have to be every time. Match your CTA to the content of your episode, and you'll see better results. Context is key! | 188 Shut Up and Listen - Podcaster Interview Best Practices | 25 Jul 2023 | 00:06:01
If you interview people on your podcast you need to constantly be improving your podcast interview skills. In this episode, I dive into the art of interviewing, which goes beyond asking good questions. It's about creating engaging conversations and extracting valuable insights from your guests. So, get ready to make your podcast unmissable with these 5 essential tips to become a better interviewer. Tip #1 - an interviewer's greatest skill is to know when to be quiet and actively listen. Yes, having prepared questions is important, but true magic happens when you listen attentively to your guest's responses. Lean in, get curious, and ask follow-up questions, challenge your guest, or ask for examples and stories to uncover those golden nuggets of wisdom. Now, let's talk about interrupting. Tip #2 is to avoid excessive interruptions. While some interruptions can be compelling, too much of it can annoy your guest and frustrate your listeners. Find the right balance to maintain a smooth flow of conversation. Moving on to Tip #3 - always represent your listener. Think about what your audience might be curious about or need clarification on, and don't hesitate to ask those questions. Your listeners will appreciate your thoughtfulness and feel engaged throughout the episode. Here's a reminder for Tip # 4 - editing is your friend. Knowing that you can edit the conversation later allows you to relax during the interview. If a guest goes off-topic, no worries, you can cut it out. Just be cautious not to over-edit, as you still want the conversation to feel natural and authentic. Last but not least, Tip #5 - embrace the power of silence. Pauses in the conversation can add comedic, emotional, or dramatic impact. They pull your listeners in and keep them engaged. Don't be afraid of a little dead air; it can work wonders. By mastering these interviewing best practices, you'll create a more powerful listening experience and turn your audience into loyal fans who can't wait to share your show with others. | 187 The 1 Thing 90% of Podcasters Don't Do That Hurts Their Podcast Authority | 11 Jul 2023 | 00:06:50
There's one key practice that I've noticed the majority of podcasters neglect. It's something that puts them at risk of wasting time, sounding like amateurs, and subjecting their listeners to sub-par audio. Can you guess what it is? Testing. Yes, testing your microphone and system before you hit that record button. It might seem obvious, but you'd be surprised how many podcasters skip this step. And the result? Terrible audio that could've easily been avoided. Believe me, I've had countless clients who complain about their audio sounding bad. And you know what my first question to them is? "Did you test?" It's a question they hate because the answer is almost always "no." Podcasters often get complacent. Their system worked fine yesterday, last week, an hour ago, so they assume it'll work just fine again. But it's only when they listen back to their recordings that they realize their audio quality is poor. And let me tell you, poor audio hurts your show and your credibility. Imagine being a master chef, passionately creating a culinary masterpiece. You carefully select the freshest ingredients, measure with precision, and artfully combine flavors. But wait! There's just one problem—you never tasted the dish. Neglecting to test your mic and system is like being that oblivious chef, serving dishes without knowing if they're perfectly seasoned or a disastrous mess. Now, for all you ambitious podcasters out there using podcasting as a recipe for business success or establishing yourself as the ultimate flavor connoisseur in your niche, this is for you. When your audio quality leaves a bitter taste in your listeners' ears, it's not exactly a recipe for authority. So, what does a test look like? Good news—it only takes 90 seconds. Heck, it can even take just 30 seconds! Here's what I do (hit play to get more details on each step):
1. Fire up my system and check my settings. 2. Tap my microphone to ensure it's the correct one being recorded. I always wear my big headphones for this, and I recommend you use wired headphones too, not earpods or Bluetooth ones. 3. If I had guests on the show, I would check their microphone levels and make sure they were using the correct mic by doing the tap test. 4. Hit record on my device or platform and record a short test. 5. Listen to that test with headphones! This step ensures I'm solid and not guessing. I pay attention to background noise, crackling on the line, or anything else that might distract my listener. 6. If I need to make any fixes or adjustments, I troubleshoot until it sounds right.
After this quick run-through, I can record with confidence. My show's quality is not at risk, and I know my audience will enjoy a great-sounding show without any effort on their part. Now, you might be thinking, "Do I really need to test every single time?" The answer is no, but let me remind you why audio testing is crucial. Bad audio is one of the biggest turn-offs for podcast listeners, and they have countless choices when it comes to what they put in their ears. So, don't give them a reason to abandon your show. A simple test every time ensures consistency and efficiency, making your podcast an authority-building machine. If you've ever wished your show could sound as good as other top podcasts, I'm here to help. I'll listen to just ten seconds of your show and give you three or more actionable tips to enhance your audio quality. The best part? It's free, and I'll even offer you a full 15 minutes to discuss them with me. Don't put your authority at risk. The quality of your audio speaks volumes about the quality of your work. Let me be your extra set of ears and help you take your podcast to the next level. Join me in this episode as we delve into the importance of testing and how it can transform your podcasting game. What if the key to monetizing your podcast wasn't actually within the podcast itself? It's not a riddle, well, it's sort of a riddle but I reveal the answer in this episode. Many entrepreneurs with podcasts understand that their shows are powerful tools for driving sales in their businesses. But there's an even more potent strategy that goes hand in hand with your podcast. I'm talking about the often underestimated power of email marketing. Combining the marketing power of your podcast and your email list is a winning formula that will take your success to the next level. But why should you embrace email marketing? Now, I won't give away all the valuable insights I have in store for you, but I'll share a glimpse of what's to come. From building your email list from day one, to segmenting your subscribers for personalized content delivery, I've got you covered. Craft irresistible subject lines and maintain consistency with your email schedule – these are just a taste of the tips I'll be sharing. And, we'll dive into how you can use your email list as a covert way to learn more about your listener and build a show that will be irresistible to them. But remember, this is just scratching the surface. By harnessing the potential of email marketing, you'll witness a significant increase in your podcast downloads, revenue, and client loyalty. So, hit play and find out how your email list can fuel your podcast and podcast can fuel your email so that you've got plenty of fuel to skyrocket your sales. | 185 Why Your Podcast Guest Intros Suck (Steal this Pro Guest Intro Format) | 13 Jun 2023 | 00:07:33
In this episode, I share the very simple podcast guest intro format that I learned from 30+ years in radio and 10 years in podcasting. Click play - Your listeners will thank you. Here's what's not in the perfect guest intro — aka the most heinous crimes committed against guest intros. First, reading your guest's bio from their website—lazy and unimpressive. Don't waste my time with all of their accomplishments if they don't have anything to do with why I showed up as a listener. Second, mispronouncing their name and not bothering to edit it out—ouch, that's a big no-no. Lastly, the ultimate offense: asking your guest to "tell us about yourself." Remember, it's not a question, and it's not what great hosts do! As a podcast host, it's your job to do your homework, curate the information for your listener, make sure it's all accurate, and then connect the dots for your listener so they have enough context to keep listening. All the rest, can be covered (if needed) in the interview. So, follow the simple format I give you for an expert podcast guest intro and get on with it. Your listeners deserve better. And, be sure to listen until the very end for a reminder of the tip I shared in episode 148 that will change the way you record your podcast guest intro and make it even better! Now, the key to serving your listener with great podcast guest intros is to know who your listener is, why you're having that specific guest on your show, and what you're show is really all about. If these aren't super clear for you then you need a bit more of my help. Grab a spot on my calendar and take advantage of a free 15-minute podcast coaching call with me (link below). | 184 5 Reasons to Podcast for Your Business (Pick One) | 30 May 2023 | 00:07:33
If you're podcasting for your business, you need to have a reason. Without a clear reason behind your podcast, you'll miss out on the incredible benefits it can bring to both your listeners and your business. In this episode, I reveal the 5 most common reasons why entrepreneurs choose podcasting as a marketing tool. Not only that, but I also explain how understanding your purpose should shape your role as a podcaster. Brace yourself, because it might mean making a few adjustments to better support your main objective (aka the next step you want your listener to take). So, let's jump right into those 5 reasons and discover how they can transform your podcast and your business. Reason #1 - Grow Your Community: Podcasts have a remarkable power to bring like-minded people together. As a business owner or entrepreneur, using a podcast to build a community in your niche can be a game-changer. Imagine creating a space where your listeners can connect with each other and with you, just like a vibrant Facebook Group or a dedicated community on platforms like Mighty Networks, Substack, Slack, Skool, Discord, Whatsapp, or Kajabi. You can even nurture a community through your email list. This reason for podcasting is all about fostering connections and building awareness and trust. Reason #2 - Generate Leads: Think of your podcast as a fantastic top-of-funnel strategy. If you're in it for this reason then your podcast needs to be a powerful tool that drives discovery and encourages listeners to move forward in your marketing funnel. that might look like downloading your lead magnet, scheduling discovery calls, or even visiting a page that allows you to retarget them with ads. A podcast can generate valuable leads for your business if you are intentional with your content and strategy. Just remember, if you choose this as your reason for podcasting, make sure you have a proven funnel in place to make the most of this opportunity. Reason #3 - Build Authority: Do you want to be seen as the go-to expert in your field? Are you eager to establish yourself as the real deal? Having a podcast is like a credibility booster, allowing you to showcase your expertise and stand out in your niche. This reason for podcasting is especially powerful for coaches, course creators, service providers, thought leaders, and innovators. It's a fantastic way to build trust and credibility, particularly if you have higher-priced products or services or if you're looking to sell a book or grow your speaking business. Reason #4 - Make Sales: Believe it or not, you can sell directly from your podcast! However, it's crucial to tread carefully. There's a fine line between genuinely serving your listeners and turning your show into an infomercial. If your business offers solutions for urgent issues or has lower-priced products that don't require extensive trust or loyalty, this reason for podcasting could work wonders for you. Reason #5 - New Revenue Stream: There are a lot of entrepreneurs who gravitate toward this reason for podcasting because who doesn't want another revenue stream? In this case, instead of using your podcast solely as a marketing tool, you have to think of it as a business in and of itself. To monetize your podcast, you need to grow your audience to a significant enough size to attract sponsors and advertisers who want to reach your loyal listeners. In other words, you're selling your audience instead of selling to your audience, and that changes your strategy and content. Beware, few entrepreneurs can pull off having it both ways - having a podcast for their business and as a business. Listen to episode #173 for more: https://podcastperformancecoach.com/173-how-to-make-money-from-podcasting/ Out of these five reasons, which one resonates with you? I know it's tempting to choose them all, but let me warn you. Trying to do it all will only lead to confusion and a less effective podcast. Your listeners want you to take care of them, provide a clear path forward, and honor the unspoken arrangement you made when they subscribed. Avoid the trap of a scattered approach that leaves them feeling deceived. When you're crystal clear on your reason for podcasting, you can show up consistently and effectively. Your purpose will determine your podcast's style, frequency, format and content. And when that clarity shines through, your listeners will show up and subscribe for all the right reasons. | 183 The Top Reasons You Should Get Your Podcast on YouTube (Now!) | 16 May 2023 | 00:06:12
You might think of YouTube as that place for videos. This is why you might also think it's no place for an audio-only podcast. But, you're wrong and in this episode, I'm going to explain why you need to rethink YouTube and get your podcast on there, like NOW! As a podcast coach, I often get asked the question, "I'm on Apple Podcasts and Spotify, what else is there?" And while these are definitely the big players in the podcasting world, historically, YouTube is the future. Now, before I dive into this, I want to acknowledge the impact that Apple has had on podcasting. They've been supporting podcasts since 2005, created their own app in 2012, and since 2014, it's been pre-installed on every iPhone. For almost two decades, Apple Podcasts was the dominant place to discover and listen to podcasts. But here's the thing: nearly 75% of people listen to podcasts on their phone, and globally, Android phones represent over 70% of the mobile market. This means that the audience for podcasts is not just limited to those who use Apple products. The third most popular platform for listening to podcasts is Google Podcasts, or should I say, YouTube Music. Google is rumored to be scrapping Google Podcasts altogether and moving them to YouTube Music. Even if we leave the world of speculation and just deal with the facts of today - you can't deny that accessing 80 million premium YouTube users is well worth the effort. Need a few more reasons to get your podcast on YouTube? For starters, YouTube is owned by Google, so having your podcast on YouTube can actually help with your SEO and increase your visibility online. Plus, YouTube is a great platform for building a community around your podcast. You can interact with your listeners in the comments section, create behind-the-scenes videos, and even live-stream your podcast recordings. And let's not forget about monetization. YouTube has a built-in ad program that allows you to make money from your content (once you hit specific milestones). Plus, if you have a large enough following, you can also get sponsored and do brand deals. I can tell you from personal experience that being on YouTube helps you reach potential customers. I've had clients who found me on YouTube. They'd never listened to any of my episodes on a traditional podcast player - it was a relationship started and nurtured entirely on YouTube. "But Coach, I have a face for radio! I don't want to be on camera!" Surprise! You don't have to be on camera. You can simply upload your audio with a static image or create some fun animations to go along with it. All of my episode videos have an animated waveform over my show poster. That's it. Plenty of people listen to YouTube instead of watching it - they treat it like a podcast already! So, if you're not already on YouTube, why limit yourself? You can increase your exposure, access your audience, and potentially monetize your content with minimal effort. Your podcast host likely already has a one-click "publish to YouTube" button, so it's easy to get started. If you're already on YouTube and want to take advantage of the new YouTube/podcast/music world, check out this video for details on how to do that. And if you need help getting started with your podcast or video podcast, we can help. My wife (and business partner) is a video confidence coach, so we've got you covered from all angles. It's time to join the party and get on YouTube. Your potential customers are waiting for you, and the benefits are real. So what are you waiting for? | 182 The 7 Mindset Traps that Kill Podcasts (and How to Avoid Them) | 02 May 2023 | 00:08:44
Tired of people telling you success is all about mindset? Well, too bad because the success of your podcast is 100% on you having the right mindset. If you don't it could kill your podcast way before it's time. In this episode, I share 7 of the common mindset traps I see podcasters deal with plus I share the one antidote for all of them. As a podcaster, you might find yourself in one or more of these traps so you'll want to find out how to avoid them and escape them. Check out how common these mindset traps are - I bet you'll recognize some! As a podcast coach, I've noticed that podcasters often get stuck in the trap of perfectionism, which leads them to re-record stumbles or edit out every "um" or "ah." This is not only unrealistic but can also lead to inauthenticity. Sometimes this is triggered by another mindset trap - comparisons. And the spiral continues if this leads to another mindset trap, expectation. The scarcity mindset, where you feel fiercely competitive with other podcasters and believe that there is not enough to go around, can also kill your motivation to keep going. This mindset trap often goes hand in hand with negative self-talk, another mindset trap. Having a fixed mindset and dealing with imposter syndrome are two more mindset traps. Are you starting to recognize some of these mindset traps? Find out how they show up for podcasters and what you can do about them. It's no wonder so many podcasters give up. If you want to stay out of the podcast graveyard, join me in this episode to learn more about these mindset traps and discover the antidote to all of them. Let's navigate the mental minefield and keep you going strong with your podcast.

| 181 The 6 Steps that Lead to Profitable Podcasting for Your Business | 18 Apr 2023 | 00:07:25 | |
In this episode of Just One Tip from Your Podcast Performance Coach, I have a simple but powerful message for you: If your podcast isn't working - fix it! It's common for entrepreneurs to get excited about creating a podcast, but after launching it, they realize it's a lot of work with not many results. If that's you, don't hang up your mic in shame just yet because all is not lost. I've helped many podcasters tune up their shows and turn them into lead-generating and sales-boosting machines. In this episode, I share the exact 6 steps we walk our clients through to help them achieve podcast success. Here's an overview of what we'll cover: Step 1: Align your podcast to your business goals. Make sure your show supports your business and brand rather than your personal podcast rockstar dreams. Step 2: Find the right audience. Ensure your podcast is attracting the kind of people who might actually become clients or customers. Remember, if you're talking to everyone, you're talking to no one. Step 3: Determine the funnel fit. Know how your podcast fits into your marketing funnels or sales systems. Understand your funnels before you figure out the role of your podcast in those funnels. Step 4: Make changes. After going through the first three steps, make a plan. It might mean a name change, a format change, or a content adjustment, so plan for it and be intentional with it. Step 5: Step up your performance. Learn how to use your mic and take podcasting seriously. Your credibility is on the line, and if you sound like crap, nobody will listen. Step 6: Market your podcast. Shout it from the rooftops! Get the word out about your shiny, retooled podcast if you want it to generate results. Remember, this process won't get done in an hour or even a day. If you want a podcast that serves you, your business, and your potential clients, you need to spend time tuning it up. Get professional help to guide you through the process, make the right adjustments, and drive serious sales with your podcast. Whether your show is not working or it's doing great, these tips can help you take your podcast to the next level. Tune in to this episode of Just the Tip to learn more!

| 180 Unbiased Review of Focusrite Vocaster Two: Do Podcasters Need It? | 04 Apr 2023 | 00:08:32 | |
In this episode I share my honest opinion of the Focusrite Vocaster Two and help you determine if it's the right audio interface for your podcast needs. First, let me clarify that I bought this equipment with my own money and was not given it for free. I was hesitant to buy it because my previous interface, the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, had just stopped working. However, I decided to give Focusrite another shot, and I'm glad I did. The Vocaster Two is an audio interface that you plug your XLR mic into, and then connect to your computer via USB. It's important to note that it's not compatible with USB mics. If you have an XLR mic, want an interface that doesn't require a lot of extra equipment, and like the convenience of the automated 'gain set' feature and EQ enhancement, then this interface is perfect for you. It's also great for co-hosts or in-person guests. However, if you're a solo podcaster or never interview people in person, then you may not need the Vocaster Two. I bought this interface for its two inputs, which is useful when my wife and I coach our clients together and don't want to share a mic. It's also lightweight, making it ideal for podcasting on the go. What I love about the Vocaster Two is its easy-to-read settings, auto-gain and EQ enhancement pre-sets, separate controls for each host or guest, and the ability to use it as your studio console or for video. You can even connect it to your phone for call-in guests. The cons are the learning curve with the software, the lack of notches and numbers on the knobs, and the inability to accommodate a USB mic. However, once you get used to the interface, these cons become less of an issue. Overall, the Vocaster Two is a fantastic podcast tool that's worth its weight in your suitcase. It delivers high-quality audio without complicating your production process or reducing your beach time. Here is the Focusrite Vocaster Two on Amazon. | 179 Stuck in a Podcast Rut? Here's How One Client Got Out | 21 Mar 2023 | 00:07:22
If you're a podcaster who's stuck in a rut or you feel like your traction has hit a plateau, this episode is for you. Also, if you're a podcaster who's never been stuck in a rut - this episode is also for you because it's coming. Mwahhaha. Today’s tip is all about escaping the podcast plateau. If you're feeling stuck and like your show is going nowhere, it's time to do something different. I've noticed that a lot of podcasters who hit a plateau end up thinking they just need to push harder with their calls to action, sell more on the podcast, and ask for more from their listeners. While it's important to help your listeners take the next step, sometimes this approach can come off as pushy and make your audience feel like they're being sold to rather than served. Recently, we helped a client who was in this exact situation. She was about 40 episodes in, and while she had a ton of great information to share, she had hit a plateau and wasn't seeing any growth. She spent the entire show trying to monetize it by selling directly from each episode, but nothing was happening. Through our work with her, we identified five key things that helped her get back on track:
If you're feeling stuck on your podcast plateau, I encourage you to take a step back and look at these five areas. | 178 How to Prepare Your Podcast Guest to get the Best Possible Interview | 07 Mar 2023 | 00:06:13
Are you doing a good job at preparing your podcast guest to give a great interview? If you answer yes because you send them your questions in advance then we need to talk! As a seasoned talk radio expert, I'm here to tell you that this is a sure fire way to zap all of the fun and spontaneity out of the conversation. But fear not, my friends. There are still ways to prepare your guests without ruining the flow of the interview. In this episode, I'm sharing my top tips on how to get your guests in the sweet spot of being perfectly prepared for a killer interview that feels like a natural conversation. First things first, you want your guests to know who they are talking to - your audience! I prescribe to listener-centric podcasting, meaning everything you do on your show is for the benefit of your listeners. So, let your guests know who your audience is and encourage them to aim their information directly at them. Next up, the topic. Help your guest prepare by letting them know which specific part of their expertise you'll be tapping into. Give them a basic outline of the conversation, just enough so they get a sense of the flow. This will help them feel more comfortable and confident in their answers. Lastly, give your guests all the specifics around the recording and what to expect once they connect with you. Be super clear about your tech requirements, because no one wants their guest to show up on their phone talking through a Bluetooth mic as they shop for bags of chips. Let them know how long it will take, and how you run your recording session. Gathering their social channels and other info ahead of time will make things run more smoothly. Note - never hand over the reins of your show by opening the self-promotion floodgates. Preparing your guests for a podcast interview doesn't have to ruin the fun and spontaneity of the conversation. By following the tips I share in this episode, you can get your guests into the sweet spot of being perfectly prepared for a killer interview that feels like a natural conversation. Your guest will feel taken care of, you'll feel more in control of your show, and your audience will get what they came for - great content, well-delivered. | 177 The Most Important Question to Ask About Your Podcast Goals | 21 Feb 2023 | 00:05:10
This might be the most important question for podcast success: to what end? As a podcast coach, I’ve met with hundreds of podcasters and many are stumped when asked about their podcast goals. They often believe the main goal of their podcast is to get more downloads, but I looooove to challenge that thinking by asking what the end result of those downloads is. While downloads matter to some extent, they're just the first step toward achieving bigger, more business-building goals like more website traffic, leads, and sales. By fixating on downloads, podcasters are measuring the wrong metric. In this episode, I help you set better podcast goals that will turn your podcast into a marketing machine for your business. | 221 How to Turn Your Podcast Intro into a Podcast Promise (and Why You Should!) | 29 Oct 2024 | 00:08:19
Are you wasting your first 30 seconds? Is your podcast intro turning people away? Too many podcasters kick off with random chit-chat, life updates, or awkward mic adjustments. Don’t let that be you! You’ve got just half a minute to hook a new listener, and if you don’t, they’re moving on. In this episode, I’m breaking down exactly how to craft an intro that grabs attention and keeps your listeners around for the full episode. We’re talking about creating a powerful Podcast Promise—an intro that lets listeners know exactly what they’re going to get by hitting play. Here’s how to set it up for maximum impact:
The right intro doesn’t just attract the right listeners—it repels the wrong ones. If your content isn’t a match for someone, you want them to know right away so they don’t waste their time (or yours!). A strong podcast promise attracts those who are primed for what you offer, making it easier to turn listeners into loyal fans and even clients. Want to hear an example? I share a powerful podcast promise from one of my clients that perfectly illustrates how a clear intro not only brings in the right audience but also pushes away the wrong one. So, is your podcast intro doing the heavy lifting it should? Use this checklist to put yours to the test:
Put your podcast intro to the test and make sure it’s as strong as it can be. With the right intro, you’ll hook listeners early, build authority, and set your podcast up to serve you, your audience, and your business. Now that you've analyzed your intro, let's have a look at your whole podcast (and find out how to improve your podcast ROI). Grab my free Podcast Audit.

| 176 How Podcasters can Use (Not Abuse) AI without Compromising their Brand’s Authenticity | 07 Feb 2023 | 00:08:20 | |
If you listen to my last episode on AI and Podcasting then you know that we, the human podcast hosts, don’t have much to fear in terms of being usurped by our AI counterparts. At least as long as we keep it authentic and personal. That doesn’t mean we have to turn our back on AI. There are a lot of great AI tools for podcasters that can make your job a lot easier. But, if you use these tools poorly, the could have a really negative effect on your brand and even destroy all of that juicy authority you’ve been building for you and your business. In this episode, I share a few of the tools you might want consider and I include the gremlin-level warnings about how not to use them. And, I also reveal some of the AI tools I’ve been using for a long time (without ruining my brand).
Here are some of the AI tools I use:
It’s probably easiest to go through the process of producing an episode and talk about how AI can help or hurt along the way.
Topic Generation Language modeling and language processing AI like GPT-3 (Chat GPT is a popular free option) can generate a variety of topic ideas for your show. You can also use SEO AI tools to find topics that are in demand and will help your website’s SEO. The caution here is to make sure you don’t lose sight of the intention of your podcast and how it serves your listener. The most SEO friendly topics may be of no interest to your niche. You know your show and your audience better than AI.
Script Development There are so many tools you can use at this level from having AI completely write your script to simply using a voice-to-text AI to capture your thoughts the moment they come up so you can edit the script later. I use Otter.ai to capture my thoughts, it transcribes the recording instantly, and then I have something to start with when it comes to writing my script. Gremlin Warning – If you haven’t already discovered this, you soon will. AI can write your entire script. Do not do this. I repeat. Do. Not. Do. This. Here’s why:
Synthesized Voice Yes, you can get AI to voice over your entire podcast (for example, Revoicer). But, is that why you got into podcasting? Isn’t your show about building trust and authority with your potential clients… how are they going to feel when they find out they’ve been listening to a robot? There is one cool option here…multiple languages. If you’re branching out globally, you could have AI translate and record your script in multiple languages. Just know that there could be mistakes and if you don’t speak the language, you might not catch them. But, your listener will.
Editing and Mixing AI editing has been around for a long time. I’ve never been a fan. It has gotten better but I’m still not a fan. Here’s why – you are editing the text document and it will suggest removing the ums, ahs, stumbles, breaths… basically everything that makes you sound human. If you want to sound like a robot use AI editing. By the way, I’ve had people tell me that they find certain podcasts hard to listen to because it makes them feel uneasy. It’s the AI editing! AI can create and add some really interesting music and sound effects. In my experience, it’s not much of a time saver but it can be fun. Make sure you’re doing it to enhance the episode for your listener not just to have some fun.
Publication and Promotion There are so many AI tools you can use to publish and promote your podcast. AI can give you a hand with an SEO title, it can write your description, help you out with show notes, and even come up with some catchy and visual social media posts. AI can also turn your podcast into a video (either the full episode or a promotional snippet). You can also use it to schedule posts, automate engagement, create and optimize ads, and analyze your promotional efforts. It’s a deep, deep hole, I mean well of possibilities. If you want to tap into AI for promotion, you’ll likely be combining various tools. I keep it pretty simple using Kapwing for promotional videos and I’ve started using ChatGPT for suggesting SEO titles.
The Final Warning! There are so many options it’s tempting to take the easy road and have AI do all the things. But don’t. AI is a great tool but you are still the one responsible for everything that is published on your podcast. So, never rip and read as we used to call it in radio. Don’t accept what AI generates as a finished draft. Re-write content. Re-design social posts. Check everything AI has created for you.
The most important thing is to not lose sight of why you created this podcast in the first place and who you are creating it for (ahem, your listener). You don’t want to take any AI shortcuts that could compromise your integrity, your authority or their trust in you. Want to know how to stand out as a spectacularly human host in the age of AI? Check out my last episode to discover why AI hosts will never replace real, live, human podcasters.

| This Podcast Episode is 100% AI-Generated. Does it Suck? | 31 Jan 2023 | 00:05:14 | |
This is how I generated it. I used: https://chat.openai.com/ . Free to use (at the time of this episode). PROMPT Write a podcast script for an ai generated voice about how podcasts can be 100% ai created and nobody would ever know. tone is a bit sarcastic. Then I added: write it again with more sarcasm.
Next: Write the description that should be published on Apple Podcasts along with this episode, include a note that this episode including this description were 100% Ai-generated. Result: In this episode, we explore the potential future of podcasting where AI takes over the role of human hosts and curates content. Is it possible that AI-generated podcasts will be indistinguishable from human-made ones? We discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this technology and the question of authenticity in podcasting. Tune in to find out more. Note: This episode and its description were 100% AI-generated. (Too short in my opinion). I used https://revoicer.com/ for the voice-over. Basic membership.

| 175 Will Podcasting Survive the AI Invasion? How Human Podcast Hosts Win Every Time | 24 Jan 2023 | 00:06:48 | |
It’s an invasion! AI is going to take all of our jobs! Grab your homestead now while you still can… Okay, so it’s not quite time to panic about how Artificial Intelligence is going to decimate the economy and take all of our jobs. But, it is time for us podcasters to pay attention because AI can help us but it can also hurt us. It’s actually such a big topic that I’m dedicating two episodes (and a bonus episode in between) to it. Stay tuned for part two and AI’s contribution. In this episode we talk about you, the podcast host. Can you be replaced by AI? Absolutely! Robots are coming for your job! AI can write a podcast script and voice it (now with more emotion than ever). You’d be shocked at how far AI scripts and voices have come when you know how to manipulate the input! Shocked! The good news is that there are several ways that AI hosts suck compared to human podcast hosts. First, they are not human. As in, they are not YOU and in my opinion, that’s a big deal. Listeners can get facts from anywhere. They tune in because they want to hear these from you, they want to get to know you. They do that when you share your ideas, your stories and anecdotes, your experiences. That’s how they get to know you. Most of the podcasters that I work with are podcasting to build authority – either for themselves or their brand – which means that THEY are a big part of the secret sauce that makes their podcast valuable. I also work with a handful of podcasters who are podcasting as a business – meaning they are selling ad space on their podcast or attracting sponsors – you guessed it the key ingredient in that secret sauce is also THEM. No robot can replace you because you have a unique personality and you have stories and anecdotes from your lived experience to share. This is where the authenticity comes from. This is what your audience wants. Let’s talk for a quick sec about authenticity – I think this is one of the biggest questions you have to ask yourself if you’re thinking about replacing yourself (or starting a podcast) with an AI generated voice or script. Here’s the question: will your listener be upset when they discover that it’s not a real voice or that you’re presenting ideas and opinions you didn’t come up with yourself? It’s all about trust. An authority building podcast requires the trust of the audience. If they don’t trust you how will they ever believe you or like you (or buy from you)? If you know me at all then you know I’m all about listener-centric podcasting. So ask yourself, who are you serving when you use AI to host or script your podcast? I’m going to go out on a limb here and say it’s not the listener! The trust goes both ways. You have to trust that your listener wants to hear from YOU. And that comes from you engaging with your audience. This is another way that human hosts are better than AI podcast hosts. They can show up and connect with the listener. It’s not just your ideas, stories, and opinions or your ability to connect and engage it’s also your humanity. Your audience can hear your human-ness in your emotions, your inflections, and reactions. This is what draws them in. AI can’t do that. And finally, for all of you that interview guests, you may be thinking that you’re free and clear from being overtake by AI. You’re only partially right. With good production, AI could create a very compelling interview podcast. Here’s where you can shine as a human host - make sure you stay present and engaged. If you read the questions in front of you without reacting to your guest’s answers then you could easily be replaced by an AI host. Be a part of the conversation. Jump on opportunities to be spontaneous. React with your full attention. These are things AI can’t quite yet do. If you’re struggling with being THIS human in your interviews, I can help. Grab your free 15-minute coaching call. So, to recap - if you want to be avoid losing your audience to podcast written and hosted by artificial intengence, then crank up what makes you uniquely you.
If you do these things then you can rest assured that AI is not going to steal your audience. Nobody can replace YOU as long as YOU show up every episode. If you haven’t subscribed yet, make sure you do because in my next episode I’m going to share what AI tools you can and should be using in your podcast production process and which ones you should stay the hell away from! I’ll even reveal what AI tools I use – some of them for years! Plus, I’m dropping a bonus episode that is 100% AI produced… I really hope you don’t like it as much as you like me! | 174 3 Ways Your Podcast Tagline Could be Working Harder for Your Podcast | 10 Jan 2023 | 00:06:44
There’s a little something called the tagline and in this episode, I’m going to help you figure out if your podcast needs one, what you should be including in that tagline, and how to turn it into an important part of your podcast SEO strategy. And, if you already have a tagline - keep reading (or listen to this episode) to make sure it’s as powerful as it can be. First things first… what is a podcast tagline? It’s quite simply an extension of your podcast title. You might think of it as a subtitle because it often follows a colon or a dash. Think, 2001: A Space Odyssey. Or, Morbid: A True Crime Podcast. Your podcast tagline can help your podcast in 3 key ways:
1. Give the title context. You may not think that your title can be miss construed but that’s because you know the context. You know that digging deeper is about academic research but without context it could be about self-help, genealogy, archeology, gardening, building a well… So, use that tagline to clarify your title and give it context.
2. Identify your niche. Your tagline is a great place to let your ideal listener know that this show is for THEM. Add an audience identifier in your tagline like marketing tips for kid-preneurs, or survival guide for moms with kids on the spectrum. You know they’re going to feel like you just tapped them on the shoulder and said right this way when they read that right? By the way, if you haven’t niched your podcast down… listen to episode 93, episode 92, and episode 37.
3. Boost your SEO. Adding keywords to your tagline will massively help people who are looking for a show just like yours actually find your show. A lot of people look for new podcasts using search terms. If they aren’t using your name or your podcast name in the search bar, will they find your show? Add those terms they’re searching in your tagline to give it a fighting chance of being found.
And the best news about updating or adding a podcast tagline? It’s easy! You don’t have to redo your artwork or re-record your intro, you can just change it through your podcast host (like Libsyn, Podbean, or Transistor)
Are You Really Tapping into the Power of the Podcast Tagline? Here’s the big question - does your podcast need a tagline? Ask yourself these three questions:
The answers will tell you if a tagline would help your show get found by more of your ideal listeners. So, what will your new tagline be? Before you dive in, make sure you know who you’re show is for, how it aligns with your business, and why someone would listen. Those things will help you create a super-charged tagline. All of these things are part of our Podcast Tune-up process - getting clarity on your podcast’s purpose and making sure it has a name and tagline that will attract potential customers.
