Reinventing Journalism with Richie McGinniss29 Mar 202501:16:41
Journalism today is rapidly changing. The days of traditional media with emotional manipulation are coming to an end. Leading the way is Richie McGinniss as he and his Pigeon Press team blazes the road forward with in the moment, boots on the ground, transparent news reporting. He is a fearless new breed of journalist. Plunging into both the Black Lives Matter and MAGA demonstrations, Richie not only reveals the unvarnished truth of events that impacting the world but also giving you raw perspective missing in mainstream news reports.

Now, McGinniss is stepping back from the mayhem and sharing his experiences in his new book due out in November, RIOT DIET, that brings readers knee-deep into the chaos he covered first-hand and provides deep insights into how the media and politicians distort the demonstrations for their own ends.

In today's interview Richie retells the stories and first hand account of the protest in Kenosha, Wisconsin, where he narrowly avoided a bullet fired by Kyle Rittenhouse, then desperately tried to save the life of one of Rittenhouse’s shooting victims. He recounts what he saw during the January 6th protests and the fallout afterwards and his time covering the clash between guards and Proud Boys in Seattle’s Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ) during the Black Lives Matter movement.
Armed with only cellphones, McGinniss and his squad use the power of internet video to place viewers directly among the demonstrators and police. The videos were posted to Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram, which provided Richie with a firsthand understanding of how their algorithms work.

His recordings received tens of millions of views after Kenosha when he interviewed Kyle Rittenhouse 13 min before the shooting and on January 6, when he spoke with a man smoking a doobie under the Capitol Rotunda. These reports were aggregated by nearly every major national and international news outlet.

In his new book RIOT DIET, Richie hopscotches from the Memorial Day riots in front of the White House after the death of George Floyd, to the clash of guards and Proud Boys in Seattle’s Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ), to a face-off between the umbrella gang and the NYPD in New York City’s protest in front of City Hall, to Portland’s teargas-soaked tangles between federal officers and demonstrators, and finally to the smoldering commercial districts and the deadly shootings in Kenosha.

More than just a thrilling tale of tear gas, fire, and destruction, join us in today's conversation to hear about how these news stories not only impact our lives, but also how we as 'consumers' of the news can find new and fresh ways to get more accurate and relevant news right from the scene of these world changing events.

Sustainable Clothing with Kris Cody14 Mar 202400:45:13
Kris Cody is the founder of Paka Apparel with a dream of changing the way people play outdoors and the clothing that makes it possible.

Kris launched Paka in 2017 and brought alpaca sweaters to the public through the brands’ first Kickstarter – Paka exceeded its goal of $20,000 in under 24 hours and raised more than $350,000 in 30 days. From that inception, Paka has now created a line of washable alpaca apparel and ethical performance outerwear, along with Paka's tried and true sweaters, hoodies and socks.

What makes his approach to business stand out is his effort to localize Paka’s supply chain: all of Paka’s alpaca fiber is sourced from free-roaming herds in Peru, 90% of products are manufactured in the country, and over 100 Quechua women weavers are employed (at 4x the living wage in Peru) to craft hand-woven Inca ID’s that appear on all Paka apparel. Paka donates 1% of revenue to Peruvian Hearts, an NGO encouraging the education and empowerment of young women in Peru, to support their PakaScholars program.

Last year, Paka launched Traceable Alpaca, which allows customers to see the coordinates in Peru where the fiber of their Paka sweater was sourced. All hand-woven sweaters are signed by their creator – an effort to connect the craftswomen and consumer. Paka has balanced maintaining a community-driven attitude while developing industry-changing innovation in natural fiber.

In today's conversation we dive deep into the Paka Story, Kris's unique entrepreneural journey, the power of sustainable clothing, how to have a successful Kickstarter Campaign, and how clothing can help live a outdoor lifestyle.

Rethinking Productivity with Tim Campos20 Dec 201901:05:54
If you truly want to solve a problem, solve the pain that it causes. When the pain is being felt by the executive at Facebook, then you know it's a problem that others face too. As the CIO of Facebook, Tim Campos was tasked with solving the pain the team was experiencing through the management of calendars, productivity, and the dreaded meeting. Tim took the lessons to build Woven. Woven is helping individuals and companies take back their calendars and start spending time on what matters most to them.

In today's episode, we chat about productivity, technology and community, the culture driving Facebook, rethinking time, problem-solving, and much more.

About Tim Campos
As the former Chief Information Officer at Facebook, Tim Campos doubled
overall productivity to $1.8 million per employee - making it the most
productive company in the world. Now, as CEO of Woven, he's taking those
lessons to reimagine how people use their calendar, so they can spend time
on what matters most to them.

Two weeks after Tim started as CIO of Facebook in 2010, Mark Zuckerberg
summoned him to his office for an urgent meeting. Once there, he met with
Zuckerberg’s Executive Assistant, who lambasted the company’s internal
calendar app and urged Tim to fix it. From that moment, Tim set to work
designing creative tools that would help Facebook employees easily find
optimal times and places to meet. It was so successful that it helped Tim
double Facebook’s productivity from $900,000 to $1.8 million per employee
over his tenure — five times more than most tech companies.

Tim’s experience managing productivity for the entire Facebook workforce
helped him realize that traditional calendars are broken. In 2016, he left
Facebook to co-found Woven, an intelligent calendar that helps busy
professionals maximize their most valuable asset - time.

Reinventing the Barbershop with The Bolinders12 Dec 201900:50:14
There are certain industries that have a 'legacy' going back hundreds of years. The barbershop is one of those industries. There is a certain expectation of makes up the typical barbershop and in many ways, it has defined an expectation from pop culture. What happens when you rethink the status quo and create a new model or picture of what could be a new model for the barbershop?

This is what Steve and Sarah Bolinder have done. And it all started with an idea and sketches...and a gentle push from Sarah for Steve to go into the unknown and create a new picture of the perfect barbershop. This has led to success beyond what they could imagine. This has reimagined the model for their customers, employees, and themselves. Not only has their own barbershop flourished, but others now seek them out to start their own 'Chop Barbershops' through franchises.

In today's show, we talk about rethinking established industries, turning dreams into businesses, overcoming the pains of growth, and creating a vision that invites others into the story.

About Steve & Sarah Bolinder
In 2015, Steve and Sarah Bolinder finally agreed it was time to open the doors to a shop they had dreamed of owning for over fifteen years; a barbershop for all humanity with great music, beer, and a “come on in” kind of vibe. Before opening, Steve met with his good friend and fellow barber Danny Rainey to invite him and his wife Katie to help give life to their dream. By 2018, their little shop had grown to three and signed its’ first franchise deal.

Before deciding to make the franchise leap, the owners sat down to really look at what had caused such tremendous growth in such a short amount of time, and what they discovered was that the culture of Chop surrounded four key values that had developed under their noses as they worked on the dream they loved.

Rethinking Video Ads with Zack Slingsby30 Oct 201900:37:29
Everyone is creating content. There are vloggers, podcasters, bloggers, social media influencers, and authors creating content every day. They are saturating platforms with a unique point of view, stories, and sometimes not so great content. With the ease of creating content you can get your story and passion stories told, but how do you stand out when there is so much noise?

Today's guest Zachary Slingsby is helping individuals and brands create better videos and video ads. The kind of content that goes 'viral' and is shared around the world. In this episode, he shares how you can find the right message for your audience and start standing out with both ads and everyday posts. We also dive deep into the craft of storytelling.

About Zachary SlingsbyZachary Slingsby is the founder and creative director of Human Factor Media, a New York-based creative production agency that believes brands should make videos people actually want to watch. Zack’s background is not in digital or film but in creative and technical writing. He graduated Fordham University as an English major, got a Master of Fine Arts from the New School, and his work has appeared in The Brooklyn Rail, Second Hand Stories, Into the Void, JuxtaProse, JumbelBook, Glimmertrain and some other publications, and he has a finished novel he expects to see on bookshelves soon. He is also the host of the forthcoming web-series and podcast, "Why Aren't You Famous?" (Debut, Fall 2019)

Human Factor Media is a collection of literary, comic and film talents trying to displace digital ads with branded videos of true entertainment value. Our digital team then uses the best modern media strategies to find the right audience at the right time and in the right place. We think there is clear evidence that society has become exhausted by self-promotional brand strategies and that buckets of money are wasted in the endeavor every minute. We’d like American commerce to give art a chance. We think the powers that be will be pleasantly surprised by the market’s reaction.

The Dirty Business of Laundry with Rechelle Balanzat13 Sep 201900:36:16
The business of laundry is steeped in tradition. What happens when you approach an old philosophy of business by integrating new technology solutions? This is the question that Rechelle Balanzat set out to answer. For her, the way laundry and dry-cleaning services worked felt outdated. It was inconvenient, slow, and frustrating for customers to use. If Uber and Lyft could reinvent taxi services, why couldn't she use that same tech approach to solve the pain of laundry and dry-cleaning? That's when she launched Juliette. Soon she found out that the tech issue was only a part of the issue. This led her down the road of reinvention of the entire industry. In today's episode Rechelle shares the unexpected journey of a promising tech company into something more, we talk about how humanity is key to leadership, and how you can scale your own business when you experience obstacles and failure.

More about Rechelle Balanzat
After graduating from Fordham University with honors in philosophy, Rechelle worked as a junior controller for Kohlberg Capital Corporation, a publicly traded business development company, for 3 years. Finding the work unfulfilling, she left to continue her Italian studies in Florence then travelled through Budapest, Vienna and Prague for inspiration. Upon returning to NYC, Rechelle moved to the creative industry to work for Stellarhead, a visual storytelling agency. She signed on Stonehenge, a luxury NYC real estate developer with a portfolio estimated at $2.2 billion, as her first client.

Rechelle’s next big challenge came when Romio, a technology start-up based in Flatiron asked her to write their entire social media strategy. Within 6 months Rechelle had grown Romio’s online community nationwide to 30 cities and over 1.2 million people, helping secure a round of funding for the promising start-up.

Today Rechelle is ready to take what she’s learned in finance, branding, and technology and use it to disrupt the laundry industry.

How to be a disruptor with Jezzibell Gilmore31 Jul 201900:29:35
Often we are told that we should accept that status quo. The way things are done is the best way to do them. But what happens when you see a different solution or path to reinvent a space. This is what Jezzibell Gilmore is doing with her company Packet Fabric. PacketFabric is changing network services. Today's network infrastructure is much like the electrical grid; it's lagged behind the rest of world, and hasn't kept pace with advancements in technology. Procuring network services to provision simple services to move data from one point to another takes months of work and man power. We're talking months of preparation and operational cost - all to move data from Los Angeles to New York in 65 milliseconds.

Jezzibell was an early stage employee of AboveNet Communications and Akamai Technologies, and previously served as VP of Operations at RoamData, as well as VP of Business Development for GTT. Now she has co-founded Packet Fabric and serves as their SVP Business Development.

About Jonathan Gill
A kid teaches himself how to program computers to analyze audio and make a music portal. That kid goes on to start a record label (votes in the Grammy Awards), goes to business school... then becomes a Technical Architect at a semiconductor company, is a co-inventor on a database security patent, only to return to audio to fix problems in podcasting as an adult. Backtracks takes a long view of understanding the historical progression of advertising and measurement and applies that to podcasting and spoken word audio. All the lesson of Jonathan's past and entire industries are applied to Backtracks. At an early age, he knew his business is culture. Almost everything he has done professionally has a thread of expressing culture and communication through the combination of audio, advertising, analytics, and software.

About Dani Zoldan
An entrepreneur since 19 years old, Dani is most passionate and comfortable when navigating in uncharted waters and have applied that mindset to his numerous business ventures. While in college, he founded the online music company Eargazmic.com. Merging his love of music and computers (we called it computers back then, not technology), he created a website where independent bands and musicians can use the website to promote and sell their music. Each artist had their own web page which consisted of photos, a bio, upcoming tour dates and links to purchase MP3’s. He ended up dropping out of New York University to focus on the business full-time but ultimately closing the business in 2003.

In 2004, when phone carriers starting utilizing voice over internet protocol (VoIP) and routing their traffic over internet lines instead of phone lines, he decided to experiment with that technology and built an IP connection from his apartment closet (that’s closet, as in where you put clothes) to Trinidad & Tobago and successfully was able to make long distance phone calls but paying local (Trinidad) prices. This experiment launched Titan International, which ultimately became a big player in selling wholesale long distance services to phone companies. Verizon, China Telecom, TATA Communications and many phone companies around the world relied on their services.

Not stimulated by the telecom business so much anymore, in 2008 he purchased Stand Up NY, the famous comedy club on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Stand Up NY made its name in the 80’s and 90’s with many of the world’s best comics known to frequent the club including Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Robin Williams, Louis CK and Jon Stewart. Dani purchased the club with one of his best buddy’s Gabe Waldman (also an aspiring comic), hired Steve Lewis, (the infamous New York club operator/designer) and gave Stand Up NY a major makeover. Today, the club is home to many current A-listers including Amy Schumer, Michael Che, Pete Davidson and Judah Friedlander.

In 2013, with his co-founder Jon Fatigate, we created Stand Up NY Labs, a comedy incubator. They successfully launched several hit podcasts including Tuesdays with Stories, Race Wars, The Jtrain podcast and In the Conversation which can can be found on iTunes, Spotify, Google Play and SoundCloud. In 2015, Cadence13, an audio engagement company invested in their company and currently ad-rep their network.

At the end of 2016, Stand Up NY launched Skitish Media which creates short, funny, and shareable video content for brands and media agencies.

In 2018, Dani created Stand Up NY Education in partnership with Teachable and produced its first online course called The Tight Five which consists of a 20 video course curriculum taught by 7 professional comedians. The same year, Dani started LaughPass - the first annual subscription to comedy clubs. LaughPass holders receive unlimited access to comedy shows plus a bunch of amazing perks.

In 2019, Dani launched Podcast Row. The mission is to connect entrepreneurs to their favorite podcasters to help them share their story.

Dani currently reside on the Upper West Side with my wife Billie, an orthodontist and three children - Bradyn, Sydney, Ryder and their cat Lola.
