Ep. 94, Your Leadership’s Hidden GPS: Values, Joyosity™ Summer Sips
Season 2
mercredi 18 juin 2025 • Duration 08:52
In this mini-episode, Jenn and Shelby reflects on the conversation with former Nike executive Kenx Black, who brings serious depth to the idea of values — not as brand buzzwords, but as the way you move through the world.
From design to decision-making, Ken reminds us that personal values don’t stay put—they follow you through every role, every pivot, every big “what’s next.”
Whether you're building a team or choosing clients, knowing your values helps you say “yes” with purpose and “no” without guilt.
Key TakeawayYour values aren’t just about how you see the world. They’re how you want the world to see *you*.

Season 2
mercredi 11 juin 2025 • Duration 10:56
You’re already creating culture.
Yes, even if it’s just you and your cat.
Culture isn’t some corporate memo or office ping-pong table. It’s how you flow together. In this episode, Jenn and Shelby revisits the conversation with leadership expert Moe Carrick to explore what culture actually means, why it exists even in teams of one, and how hiring for “fit” might be holding you back.
Key TakeawayThe question isn’t if you have culture — it’s what kind you’re creating, and if it supports the way you want to work and lead.

Ep. 83 Why Serious Leaders Fail (And What to Do Instead)
Season 2
mercredi 2 avril 2025 • Duration 22:09
Seriousness about destroyed me in 2nd grade. And unfortunately, it’s likely your path to failure as a full-grown adult human.
SO MANY messages about “professionalism” and “be serious.” It’s not shocking then that many leaders fall victim to the ideas that seriousness, discipline, and relentless productivity are the keys to success. But research — and real-world experience — prove otherwise. In this episode, Jenn Whitmer breaks down the hidden cost of “serious leadership” and why joy, play, and connection create stronger, more effective teams.
If this sounds delightful (and maybe untrue) tune in to learn:
- Why “seriousness equals success” is killing you and your team.
- The true cost of joyless leadership (Meaning burnout, disengagement, and turnover.)
- What leaders and businesses get wrong about joy (and it’s just a joy juke that breaks trust)
- The hidden trap of being the “smushed leader” and how to escape it
- Two questions to ask your team and your leader to you don’t have to be the only responsible adult in the room.
Doing this alone sucks. So grab one of the Joyosity™ Intensive slots for Q2 before they’re gone.

Ep. 78 ICYMI Half-Play or Full-Play: Joy and Productivity at Work
Season 2
mercredi 26 février 2025 • Duration 32:53
You don’t get to decide what feels like play for someone else. I see this all the time in team building exercises or team happy hours, the leaders walk away from it thinking, “Yes, we rocked that!” only to later find out others on the team felt drained or annoyed by the whole event. That’s where knowing your team members’ play styles really helps.
In this conversation, Shelby and I discussed how play shows up at work (and home) and how being able to fully engage boosts productivity and joy. We talked about those “forced fun” events, how employers can make their everyday work more playful and how allowing toxic behavior can ruin the whole thing.
This months focus on play was timely. With never ending snow days, lots of tense feelings on social media, and even some shift in my personal life and business… reminding me that play and boundaries go hand in hand helped me navigate forward. Tune in and let me know what stood out to you. I’d love to hear what your play style is and how it shows up at work.
Here’s what we talked about:
02:50 Half play vs full play
07:22 Play should be a choice
08:50 Making mistakes exciting and invited into work
15:30 Why respecting other play styles boosts productivity
20:35 How rules and roles influence success

Ep. 77 Tackling Toxic Work Environments with Play and Psychological Safety With Jeff Harry
Season 2
mercredi 19 février 2025 • Duration 32:12
We didn’t leave bullies behind in the 7th grade. That person will appear in any group of people where the leader allows it.
And it’s the worst. Especially when the bully is the manager.
A Workforce Institute study showed that your direct manager impacts your mental health more than your spouse, doctor, or therapist! So we need to deal with the bullies and unsafe (and even toxic) behavior. And play can be part of that solution.
Jeff Harry has made it his mission to prove that play can make workplaces more enjoyable and productive. He’s seen firsthand how workplaces struggle when they leave out joy. In this episode, Jeff and I recounted how Ted Lasso uses play to align with his team (of course we had to talk about him!). We spoke about what defines play and how being in flow can increase productivity by a significant amount. And we also dove into what to do about toxic behavior in the workplace.
Jeff and I both shared some questions to ask yourself so you can uncover what your play personality and values are and how to incorporate them in your work. We also nerd out a bit on how every innovative workplace product has its roots in curiosity and a willingness to embrace mistakes.
If you’re curious about unlocking your team’s zone of genius or simply tired of the dreaded Sunday scaries, this episode is here to help you find joy and innovation at work. When you’re at play you’re truly you and we need more people in this world who come alive with the work that they do.
Here’s what we talked about:
03:11 Why addressing toxic behavior is crucial for creating a safe work environment
05:15 How psychological safety impacts creativity and innovation
06:34 What defines play and why is it productive
12:52 Tips for reducing time-wasting activities at work

17:41 How to identify your play values to boost job satisfaction
