295. Running a Jewellery Business with a Neurodivergent Brain: What Actually Works with Aileen Carson19 Jan 202600:42:08

In this episode, host Anna Campbell chats with coach and neurodiversity specialist Aileen Carson about what neurodiversity really means, and why so many creative people (including jewellers) might recognise themselves in it.

They talk about conditions like ADHD, autism and dyslexia, and how some people discover they're neurodivergent later in life simply by noticing they think differently, spot patterns others don't, or work in their own unique way.

Aileen shares the many strengths neurodivergent makers often have, like creativity, problem-solving, incredible attention to detail and the ability to hyper-focus at the bench — a huge advantage for jewellery makers.

The conversation also gets practical, with tips for running a business when you're juggling lots of roles. Aileen talks about managing your energy, finding planning systems that actually work for you, using helpful tools and tech, and setting up a work environment that supports your needs rather than drains you.

They also cover something many creatives struggle with: burnout. From taking proper breaks and looking after the basics (food, water, sleep!) to setting boundaries with customers and giving yourself permission to rest, Aileen explains how small changes can make a big difference to your wellbeing and creativity.

To wrap up, Aileen encourages makers to lean into what they're naturally good at, trust their creative brains, and remember that not every hobby has to turn into a business.

About Aileen

Aileen Carson runs a neurodiversity coaching and training business. She works with neurodivergent people, helping them harness their strengths and find strategies to navigate any challenges they're facing in the workplace or in their business. This often involves support with executive function challenges, managing stress and avoiding burnout. She helps people identify what enables them to work at their best and use this knowledge to find working patterns that work with their brain, rather than against it. She also runs neurodiversity training sessions for employers to help them become more inclusive and she speaks about neurodiversity at conferences and events.

7 mins When we feel like we're truly living life we're living at an edge
8 mins We want to avoid the negative more than we want to experience the positive
9 What is your motivation, what is your why?
11 mins Negativity bias and getting stuck in 'what if'
13 mins How do you know when you are in a comfort zone?
14 mins Congratulations are in order. Remember that where you are right now used to be out of your comfort zone. Look back at what you do now that used to be out of your comfort zone and remember that you've done it before and can do it again
16 mins You can be scared and still do the thing
18 mins Our brain creates excuses - I don't have time, I'm too old/young, I don't know enough. Look at where your excuses are
23. How fear manifests itself - the three ps - perfectionism, people pleasing, procrastination
25 Stepping out of our comfort zone is how we learn
31 It doesn't have to be all or nothing, let's build our muscle of consistency
33 Are you taking where you are, what you do etc for granted? This is a sign you are in a comfort zone

35. 1. You don't have to take a big leap, make small changes
37. 2. Try/learn something new
40. 3. Know yourself - how do you stay grounded? What makes you feel safe?
43. 4. You don't have to do this alone
44. 5. We only know what is right for us in hindsight. We can't think our way to knowing, we have to try
45. 6. What is stopping you? Get honest with yourself
45. 7. How can I make a fool of myself? How much time and energy can I waste on this?
47. We worry about wasting time but how much time are you wasting worrying about this and not doing it?
48. How is always the wrong question. The questions to ask is what is exciting me about this? Why?
50. We don't always have to push out of our comfort zone. It can be seasonal - sometimes it's spring, we are growing and thriving. And sometimes it's winter and we need to bed in, to practice what we can already do

283. 7 Benefits of the Rising Cost of Metals to Handmade Jewellers27 Oct 202500:41:34

In this week's episode, Jessica Rose and Anna Campbell explore the unexpected advantages behind the rising costs of silver and gold. While many jewellers worry about affordability and holding stock, Jessica and Anna reveal that these changes can actually strengthen your business and the handmade jewellery industry as a whole.

They discuss seven key benefits, including:
- The increased inherent value of your jewellery - customers now see handmade pieces as not only beautiful but a smart long-term investment.

- A boost in the value of any metal stock you already own - some jewellers have seen their materials rise by around 50%, leading to higher profits when priced correctly.

- Rising prices encourage better pricing confidence and healthier profit margins across the industry, moving away from undercharging.

- More customers are looking to resell, recycle or redesign their old jewellery - creating new opportunities for bespoke services and lasting client relationships.

- Despite higher prices, demand for gold and silver jewellery remains strong, driven by design, desire, and personal connection—not just cost.

- Small independent jewellers now stand out more clearly from high-street brands, as mass-produced copies become harder to make in precious metals.

- Hallmarking gains value, giving customers reassurance and proof of authenticity as they invest in higher-priced pieces.

The episode ends with a powerful reminder: adopting a positive mindset and valuing your role as a maker is key to growth. Now is the time to embrace opportunity, build trust, and create jewellery with confidence.

282. Sand Casting For Jewellers with Iain Sainsbury20 Oct 202500:30:23

In this week's episode of the Jewellers Academy Podcast, Jess is joined by jeweller and tutor Iain Sainsbury to talk all about sand casting for jewellers and how you can do it safely, confidently, and successfully at home.

Iain introduces his brand-new online course in sand casting, available now on pre-sale with 50% off until 6th November 2025. He shares why this ancient metalworking technique, dating back thousands of years, is experiencing a revival. With its low cost of entry, minimal equipment needs, and beautifully rustic results, sand casting allows jewellers to cast their own designs at home without the need to wait on external casters. No two sand cast pieces are ever the same, making every creation uniquely yours.

Jess and Iain dive into practical tips for safer, smarter sand casting at home, including:

  • Safety First: Essential setup for fire safety, ventilation, and personal protection. Why you should avoid bulky gloves, always tie back long hair, and keep a fire extinguisher close by.

  • Getting Hot Enough: Why standard butane torches won't cut it, and what to use instead - from MAP gas torches to oxygen/propane systems for faster, cleaner melts.

  • Building Your Casting Area: How to create a simple heat-containing furnace using soldering boards and ceramic bricks to help your metal flow perfectly.

  • 'Thinking Like Metal': Preparing your mould properly, from vent holes to clean sand and positioning, to ensure the molten metal runs smoothly and fully fills the design.

  • Experiment and Enjoy It: Sand casting is part science, part play. Start small, embrace the imperfections, and enjoy the excitement of seeing metal become something new.

This episode is for you if you're curious about the process of casting your own pieces from home or have experience with it, and want to refine your home set up.

About Kasey

Nunatak is a handmade silver jewellery brand created in one of the most remote and extreme environments on Earth—Antarctica. Founded in 2025 by Kasey during her fourth season on the icy continent, Nunatak began as a creative outlet to keep her hands and mind busy during the long, cold polar winter. What started with a few quiet hours at the workbench in a research station has grown into a deeply personal craft, shaped by experience, resilience, and a love for untamed places. Kasey has been making silver jewellery since 2021, creating pieces both at the edge of the world and back home in Tasmania, Australia, where the wilderness is just as inspiring. With a background in environmental engineering, her work is grounded in a respect for nature's forms, materials, and stories. Each design is handcrafted with intention—simple, strong, and made to last—just like the adventurers who wear them.
