Italians Who Fed Omaha is a podcast from La Casa Pizzeria dedicated to preserving the stories of the Italian and Sicilian families who helped shape Omaha’s food culture. Hosted by Tony Vacanti Jr., a fourth-generation pizzaiolo and owner-operator of La Casa Pizzeria, the series explores the people, restaurants, bakeries, recipes and traditions that helped define how Omaha eats. These are stories of immigration and family, Little Italy and neighborhood restaurants, hard work and entrepreneurship, and generations of Omahans gathering around the table. La Casa has been part of Omaha’s restaurant community since 1953. Through Italians Who Fed Omaha, La Casa is helping document and preserve the history of the families and businesses that built Omaha’s Italian food scene, while sharing the stories behind some of the city’s most recognizable food traditions. Season One features conversations with the families and people behind La Sole Mio, Caniglia’s, Orsi’s Italian Bakery, Cascio’s Steakhouse, Rotella’s Italian Bakery and La Casa Pizzeria. Together, their stories trace generations of Omaha food history, from the bakeries and Italian steakhouses of Little Italy to family restaurants and the distinctive pizza traditions that became uniquely Omaha. For the Season One finale of Italians Who Fed Omaha, Tony Vacanti Jr. turns the microphone toward his own family. Tony sits down with his father, Anthony Vacanti Sr., to tell the story of La Casa Pizzeria and the Sicilian-American family tradition behind a pizza that has become distinctly connected to Omaha. The story begins in 1953, when the family converted a house into a pizzeria and began experimenting with a food that was still relatively new to many Omaha diners. There was a time when Italian steakhouses were a defining part of dining in Omaha. Cascio’s Steakhouse is one of the places still carrying that tradition forward. Third-generation owner Alfie Cascio joins Tony Vacanti Jr. to tell the story of the Omaha restaurant that opened in Little Italy in 1946 and became known for Nebraska steaks, Italian food, pasta, sauce and the unmistakable atmosphere of an old-school Omaha steakhouse. Alfie shares what it was like growing up inside Cascio’s, starting with bussing tables and washing dishes before learning the kitchen, cutting meat, running the dining room and eventually taking over the family business. He also revisits one of the most dramatic chapters in Cascio’s history: the 1978 fire that destroyed the restaurant. Orsi’s Bakery: The Little Italy Institution Omaha Refused to Lose

Since 1919, Orsi’s Italian Bakery & Pizzeria has been part of the story of Omaha’s Little Italy. Owner Jimmy Hall joins Tony Vacanti Jr. to share the history of one of Omaha’s oldest Italian bakeries, from immigrant bakers and horse-and-buggy bread deliveries to fresh Italian bread, Sicilian-style pizza and generations of neighborhood customers. Jimmy also tells his own unlikely story. He first started helping around Orsi’s as a child and eventually became the person determined to keep the bakery alive and preserve the traditions he grew up learning. That determination was tested in 1997 when a devastating fire threatened Orsi’s.
