  • Spiritual warfare, progressivism, and the return of paganism in the West.
  • What Richard Dawkins got wrong and why he's regretting it.

Time to Drop "Church"?23 Aug 202401:10:17

Rev with a difference Jamie Franklin talks about the big issues of church and state. This time: the Church of England seems to think that we need to drop the word "church", to stay "relevant". Is this strategy theological coherent and will it work to reach the younger generations?
The Rev'd Dr Bernard Randall's case continues to cast an awful light on the senior leadership of the CofE as top KC says that the Archbishop of Canterbury exceeding his power by blocking Randall from appealing against his bishop, Debby Lane.
And controversial cleric Brett Murphy is kicked out of the Free Church of England. Is there anywhere that faithful priests can go where they will not be persecuted?
That plus your emails and a question on the relationship of Freemasonry and Christianity.

Trash the Tories?21 Jun 202401:17:00

Revs with a difference Jamie Franklin and Daniel French sit down to talk about the biggest issue in church and state. This time:

  • The UK Election continues in much the same way as Tories slip behind Reform in some polls. Are we now voting for the next opposition?
  • Reform UK's "contract" with the British people.
  • Rishi Sunak says he is not in principle opposed to euthanasia.
  • The trouble with "Political Christianity" and our thoughts about "hoping" that Christianity might be true.

All that and much much more as ever.

Why Machines Will Never Rule the World - With Dr Jobst Landgrebe and Professor Barry Smith30 Nov 202201:19:48

Church of England vicar Jamie Franklin sits down with eminent thinkers Jobst Landgrebe and Barry Smith to discuss the pair's recent book 'Why Machines Will Never Rule the World'. Contrary to the bombastic predictions of Elon Musk and Klaus Shwab, there will never come a day when human beings create an artificial intelligence that is equal or superior to themselves. We can all relax on that front because such an endeavour is a mathematical impossibility. In this conversation, we explore Landgrebe and Smith's argument in detail whilst touching on the true nature of human intelligence, free will, the extent to which emotion has a physical basis, demonic possession, mankind's need for religion even in a secular context and the definition and implication of complex systems for viruses and climate change. Strap yourselves in because this one goes deep.

Armbands at Dawn25 Nov 202201:16:11

Church of England vicars Daniel French, Thomas Pelham and Jamie Franklin sit down to talk about the most important issues in church and society. This week we begin with some reflection upon the two "beasts" of Revelation 13 and how the imagery of persecution, faith and endurance is relevant to Christians in the twenty-first century, especially pertaining to persecuted Christians in nations such as Qatar, Iran, Tunisia and Morocco who are represented at this year's football World Cup. From the serious to the silly, we discuss whether the Church of England was correct to issue guidance saying that churches should not schedule their carol services for the same time as the World Cup final and we take in the somewhat questionable claim that elite western footballers have been silenced because they were threatened with yellow cards if they wore rainbow armbands out on the field. (All will be explained.) What does the moral and philosophical incoherence on display by footballers, journalists and western institutions reveal to us about ourselves and how can the Christian faith speak to this confusion? In Twits on Twitter, it can be no other than FIFA president Gianni Infantino's bizarre soliloquy, in which, in order to justify the questionable decision to stage the World Cup in Qatar, he claims that he "feels" like he is various things such as a Qatari, a gay person, disabled and a migrant worker. We didn't understand either.
In Question the Rev, questions about Bible translations, ex-NHS staff becoming lay preachers and whether or not the country should be officially Christian or secular from a political perspective. All that and more or course in this week's episode of Irreverend: Faith and Current Affairs!

Clown Church18 Nov 202201:40:22

Church of England vicars Daniel French, Thomas Pelham and Jamie Franklin sit down to tackle the most pertinent stories. This week: COP27 crisis talk continues as the Archbishop of Canterbury says that the world is (still) close to the point of no return whilst the ex-archbish, Rowan Williams, leads a delegation of "faith" leaders up a hill proclaiming ten new commandments for climate repentance. Meanwhile, the Diocese of Ely have asked academics at the University of Cambridge to tell them how to make money out of their church buildings and the University have responded by telling them to turn them into literal circuses. Also, in wider news, it turns out that the scientific study into a church choir Covid-19 "super spreader" event that was used not only to ban singing in church but to restrict indoor gatherings more generally was - you guessed it - based on flimsy evidence. Colour us shocked to the core in this week's offering of Irreverend: Faith and Current Affairs!

Frisking for Soup21 Oct 202201:34:07

Join Church of England vicars Daniel French, Thomas Pelham and Jamie Franklin as we discuss the big question of the day. Should the governments of the West not be trying to prevent nuclear war? As the Prime Minister fires her closest ally and hires a CCP-inspired man with a mad stare, what are to we make of the absolute mess that the government has got itself into? In Twits on Twitter, we analyse a video of two young thinkers whose creative use of tomato soup has caused one heck of a stir. And in Question the Rev, we touch on everything from the Rapture to Cathedrals for entry. All that and much much more in this week's episode of Irreverend: Faith and Current Affairs!

Rediscovering Wonder - How and Why the Church Must Re-enchant Itself19 Oct 202200:39:13

In this special episode, the Rev'd Dr Jamie Franklin presents a talk on the subject of disenchantment. How did the world lose its sense of transcendent wonder during the Reformation and Early Modern period? What is it like to live in a "flat" secular age? And what can Christianity and the Church offer to the disenchanted world?
This is a message of hope and a call to action that will encourage church leaders and Christians and that will be of interest to anybody who is seeking to rediscover wonder.

"Replant the traditions..." w/ Dr Yoram Hazony30 Sep 202201:47:59

Church of England vicars Jamie Franklin and Daniel French sat down to chat about the big stories in the news: the Queen's funeral (again), "far-right" evil fascists taking power in Italy, building Benedict Option style communities for the transmission of the faith and what to do when your deanery synod is populated by eco-loons.
Before all that, however, Jamie was privileged to be joined by distinguished political philosopher Dr Yoram Hazony, chair of the Edmund Burke Foundation and author of the new book 'Conservatism: A Rediscovery'. Topics included what is like to live a conservative life, the pitfalls of liberalism and Neo-Marxism, why nationalism is central to the conservative vision, whether or not Dr Hazony is a relativist, the appeal of Jordan Peterson and much much more!

An Opportunity for Spiritual Renewal?23 Sep 202201:15:14

Church of England revs Thomas Pelham and Jamie Franklin sit down to talk about the most significant issues in the culture today. We take a brief foray into the strange world of Canadian education in which a man came to school dressed in enormous comedy breasts and was defended on the grounds of diversity and inclusion, after which we return home to merry England and discuss the spiritual and cultural significance of Elizabeth II's funeral. Is this an opportunity for spiritual renewal within our land or was it "a bit much", as Tom appears to think? In addition, we answer your questions in Question the Rev and that's all for this week's Irreverend: Faith and Current Affairs!

Saint Elizabeth the Confessor16 Sep 202201:34:59

Church of England vicars Daniel French and Jamie Franklin sit down to talk about the death of Queen Elizabeth II and her successor Charles III. We talk from a personal and spiritual perspective about the abiding legacy of the Queen, including her strong personal faith in Christ, and our hopes for Charles' reign. Along the way we address questions around the purpose of monarchy, the decline of society during the reign of Elizabeth II, questionable royal political entanglements and the fraught question of what Elizabeth's posthumous name should be. We've already made out decision.
Our Scripture this week is taken from 2 Timothy 4:6-8: "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."

Thou shalt not dissent09 Sep 202201:43:23

PLEASE NOTE - This episode was recorded before the sad death of Queen Elizabeth II. Our condolences are with Her Majesty's family and all who mourn. We will certainly discuss our great monarch's passing on next week's show. May her soul rest in peace with God after her long years of devoted service.
Church of England reverends Daniel French and Jamie Franklin sit down to talk about the big things in our culture and the church. Today, a discussion on anger and forgiveness for one's enemies, retrospective on Lockdown in the light of the new Frankfurt Declaration (https://frankfurtdeclaration.com ), Liz Truss becomes Prime Minister and "controversial" Roman Catholic Therese Coffey becomes Health Secretary, the Rev'd Dr Bernard Randall looks to his diocese for support after being fired from his post at Trent College for promoting Anglican doctrine - guess what happened next?, will the CofE continue to support the Net Zero agenda when pensioners start freezing in the dark this Winter because of it?, and we revisit the question of whether or not there is a moral way of refusing to pay exorbitant energy bills. That and much much more on this episode of Irreverend: Faith and Current Affairs!

In this episode of Irreverend, hosted by Rev Jamie Franklin, we look at football as social engineering, including political messaging in the recent women's Euros final and the decision by Premier League clubs only to "take the knee" at specific important moments during the upcoming season. We also review recents comments by Liz Truss to the effect that if she becomes Prime Minister she will not implement any more lockdowns. Further to this, we assess Jeremy Corbyn's opining that more should be done to bring about peace in Ukraine - is this as shocking and revolutionary as some are taking it to be? Election Shake Up07 Jun 202401:09:35

Church of England revs with a difference Tom Pelham and Jamie Franklin sit down to talk about the biggest events in church and state. This week:

  • Cathedral watch as St Alban's tries out an inflatable obstacle course.
  • The General Election gets a shake up (quite literally) as Nigel Farage re-enters the fray as Reform UK leader.
  • And Trump is convicted in controversial circumstances. (Aren't they always?)

That and much, much more as ever!

This week's Irreverend sees Church of England vicars Tom Pelham, Jamie Franklin and Daniel French sit down to talk about the madness of the modern world. What are we to make of the two remaining candidates for the Prime Minister of Britain? Should gender non-affirming nurseries be closed down for refusing to affirm the chosen gender of four-years olds? How is the ten-yearly gathering of Anglican bishops in Canterbury going at the moment? (Not well.) And should faithful Christians consider going off-grid in response to an increasingly hostile society?
We consider these questions and much more in this week's episode of Irreverend: Faith and Current Affairs!

Welcome to Irreverend: Faith and Current Affairs! CofE vicars Tom Pelham and Jamie Franklin talk about the news from a spiritual perspective and offer some hints and tips on how to navigate the modern world with your soul in tact.
This week: is it the thermocalypse or just some sunny days? Rev Jamie shares some thoughts from Psalm 19 about the gift of the sun and how the diverse weather patterns of the world speak of God's creativity and wisdom. The Guardian has a different view, of course, we are all going to die in flames and we should be terrified - https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/jul/18/britain-hothouse-extreme-weather?CMP=share_btn_tw.
In an unexpected move, Prince Harry has thrown his hat into the ring by flying in a private jet to an exclusive United Nations conference, opining his way to sanctimony by simultaneously raising the climate alarm and insulting the Supreme Court of his adopted nation.
In church news, voices in the Church of England continue to attempt to define what a woman is and the American Episcopal Church comes very close to condemning crisis centres whilst affirming abortion up to birth.
We close out with some Question the Revs on walking out of church during woke sermons, silent prayer and personal favourite Scriptures.

In this week's episode, Church of England vicars Daniel French and Jamie Franklin sat down to discuss an embarrassing week for the Lawn Tennis Association as Wimbledon was won by a Russian woman and an unvaccinated man. (Imagine how much better he'd be if he'd had the vax!)
We also talked about climate fascism in the Netherlands as head robber-baron Mark Rutte attempts to steal large tracts of farmland and slaughter a third of Dutch cattle.
The Church of England is struggling to define the word 'woman'. Can these two men of the cloth provide any insight?
We finish with some interesting email correspondence and the resurrection of Question the Rev concerning whether owners will be reunited with their pets in the hereafter.

Church of England vicars Tom Pelham and Jamie Franklin are back. We reflect on the arrival of Jamie's fourth child and note how deeply indoctrinated we all must be to so easily assign its gender immediately after birth. In the news, events will almost certainly overtake us as Boris Johnson's premiership is surely over. We talk from a biblical perspective on the virtues of integrity and honesty and the folly of lies and deceit. In Church news, the CofE is apparently borrowing money in order to pay for its environmental agenda...is this a prudent Christian investment in the future or self-destructive virtue-signalling on an inconceivable scale? We also read an insightful email from a military expert on the situation in Ukraine. Listeners will perhaps not be too surprised to hear that the situation is slightly more nuanced that the corporate media are leading us to expect.

Sex Strike01 Jul 202201:47:15

The three revs are back in conversation. In this week's episode Thomas Pelham, Daniel French and Jamie Franklin discuss the latest and most salient news items from a Christian perspective. Beginning with a reflection on Romans 1, we move on to ask whether the Prime Minister was right to say that only women can have penises, review the strange DIY Covid video sick-note made by a clearly not too unwell Jeremy Vine and renewed calls to plunge the country back into a series of draconian coronavirus "measures", talk about the striking down of Roe v. Wade in the US and the resultant calls by feminists in New York State for a sex strike to teach men a lesson, demands by high-ranking officials in the British Army for full-scale war with Russia and the innovative liturgical decision by the Diocese of Oxford to encourage new converts to pledge to safeguard the integrity of creation upon the occasion of their baptisms. We also read an email from the mother of a daughter struggling with transgender issues. All of that and much much more in this week's episode!

Febrile Times 24 Jun 202201:29:09

Revs Jamie Franklin and Thomas Pelham are back discussing news and current events from a Christian perspective. This week: Gary Lineker: ethnic minority or pasty-faced white man? You decide. Also in the news, Jordan Peterson savages the sacrifice of children on the altar of a brutal far-left ideology (ouch!), academic Tim Hayward is investigated by the British government for tweeting that there are two sides to the story of the Ukraine-Russia war and the Federal Drug Administration approves vaccines for six month old babies. We also answer a question about giving to your parish church. All that and much, much more including cultural commentary, films, television and Tom Pelham's in-depth review of his trip to an industrial museum in this week's episode of Irreverend!
Our Scripture this week is taken from Psalm 46: 'God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.' A good thing to remember in febrile times.

Hungary Four - England Kneel17 Jun 202201:30:32

Rev Tom Pelham is back joining regular host Rev Jamie Franklin. In an episode packed full of spiritually enlightened cultural wisdom, we ask why the English football team has become so terrible (maybe because they have stopped caring about football and now imagine that the sport is a vehicle for the transmission of their "values"?) and why Hollywood seems so unilaterally incapable of making entertaining films (with the notable exception of Tom Cruise's latest blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick). We talk Matt Walsh's recent documentary What is a Woman? and discuss recent church news including: Justin Welby and various bishops slam the government's plans to send illegal immigrants abroad to seek a better life in Rwanda (but, whoops, they put their public letter on an online newspaper that has a paywall so nobody can read it!) and Pope Francis saying some surprisingly sensible things about Ukraine. In other news, the technocrats want to ban smoking for everybody except octogenarians and Cineworld finds itself caught in the middle of an internecine battle for supremacy between Sunni and Shia Muslims.
We also talk the plausibility of many of the outlandish claims made by transhumanists, talk about how to live meaningfully in a "post-democratic" situation and much much more!
Our Scripture this week is taken from Psalm 131 and raises the question as to whether or not we would find our lives a lot more peaceful if we just stop concerning ourselves with all this stuff.

Artificial Wombs and Climate Missionaries10 Jun 202201:41:42

Church of England vicars Daniel French and Jamie Franklin get together to offer a spiritual perspective on current events, this week taking our Scriptural reflection from Genesis 1:28-30: man and woman created by God after his own image. In this bumper edition, we range through renewables, energy bills and green "technology", the political philosophy of the England Football team, Star Wars and sci-fi going woke, the jubilee, no confidence in Boris and Nadine Dorris' savage attack on Jeremy Hunt, transhumanism and the metaverse, the Archbishop of Canterbury and Prince Andrew, the terrible massacre of Christians in Nigeria and the question of whether or not climate activists are missionaries (they're not). We hope you enjoy this episode of Irreverend: Faith and Current Affairs and, if you do, please don't forget to subscribe and share!

Gender Outlaw03 Jun 202201:17:44

Church of England vicars Daniel and Jamie Franklin get together to offer a spiritual perspective on current events, this week taking our Scriptural reflection from 2 Corinthians 11:12-15: the apostle Paul's observation that Satan masquerades as an angel of light and what that can tell us about geopolitical events and the godless humanitarian philosophy that underlies some of them. To that end, we speak about the World Economic Forum gathering in Davos and the technocratic elite's plan for a global government that will hold national governments to account. We discuss the striking parallels between the thought and philosophy of Davos and that of the Soviet communist regime. We also touch briefly on the multiple parties that were happening in Number 10 Downing Street and what they reveal to us about the beliefs of those who implement the lockdown laws. Also in Whitehall, things are looking very woke as the official line is that staff must recognise more than 100 genders and join gender non-conforming book clubs. We receive an email from a lefty listener and exchange some tedious observations about the weather. All in a day's work on Irreverend: Faith and Current Affairs!

The KKK at Prayer27 May 202201:37:52

In this episode of Irreverend, Church of England vicars Thomas Pelham and Jamie Franklin get together to offer a spiritual perspective on current events, this week taking our Scriptural reflection from 1 Timothy 2:-14: Paul's teaching that we should pray that governments allow us to live godly lives. In current events: we look at the new Schools Bill which threatens to change the relationship of the family to the state and destroy the basis for home education, a new study showing the devastating effect of lockdowns on toddlers, monkeypox and what that's all about, what football does when a black Muslim won't wear a rainbow flag on his shirt, Ricky Gervais' controversial comments about transgender people, Calvin Robinson's shunning by the CofE who he failed to recognise as the KKK at prayer, and much more! We attempt to give a spiritual perspective on all of this on this week's Irreverend: Faith and Current Affairs!

Tory Wets: General Election Announcement Special31 May 202400:57:24

Church of England revs with a difference Thomas Pelham and Jamie Franklin sit down to talk about the biggest issues in church and state. This time:

  • General elections announcement special: military service, quadruple lock for pensioners, who will we vote for, and "symbolism happens".
  • The cosmic insignificance of humans?
  • Atheist musicians in the church.

All that and much, much more as always!

The Schools Bill Must Die22 May 202200:52:04

In this special episode, Rev'd Jamie Franklin is joined by Wendy Charles-Warner, chair of Education Otherwise, and home educator and freedom fighter Amie Miles to talk about The Schools Bill. The Schools Bill was recently announced in The Queen's Speech and is a horrendously drafted piece of legislation that would destroy the basis for home education in this country. It is an unnecessary assault on the capacity of parents to make decisions for their own families and could in time lead to even more drastic intrusion by the state into parents' relationships with their children. It constitutes yet another area in which the state is arrogating to itself the responsibility and authority to interfere in the private lives of British citizens.
Our two guests in this episode are highly informed of these new developments and outline the deeply problematic elements of this new bill and how we all can play a part in making sure that it is killed in the Houses of Parliament before it goes any further. Please share this episode as widely as possible on your social media and with anybody at all who you think might be interested in this development.

Conjecture and Criticism with Nick Hudson21 May 202201:00:32

Nick Hudson is the chairman of PANDA (Pandemic Data and Analytics) (https://www.pandata.org), a group of multidisciplinary professionals who perceived the global reaction to Covid, and lockdown in particular, as overwrought and damaging to the point of causing a great tear in the fabric of society. PANDA stands for open debate and real science and challenges every aspect of the globalist "new normal" and its assault on individual dignity and liberty.
Nick himself is a former actuary and current private equity investor. He is a deep thinker across a range of philosophical and scientific subjects and describes himself as a Christian with "a low metaphysical conviction".
In a wide-ranging conversation, Jamie Franklin spoke with Nick about initial responses to the Covid-19 situation, the relationship between facts, data and narratives, the WHO pandemic preparedness treaty, the evils of centralised solutions to complex problems, the decline of Christianity and emergent globalist secularism and the importance of a creating a society that can develop through an environment of conjecture and criticism.

Strategic Engagement in the Public Square with Ryan Christopher20 May 202201:09:07

CofE vicar Jamie Franklin sits down with director of Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) UK, Ryan Christopher, to talk about the global assault on liberty and what Christians and all people of good will can do to push back against it. Ryan goes into detail about the implications on the Online Safety Bill and the Conversion Therapy Bill and why it is essential that as many Christians as possible becomes politically engaged as quickly as possible.
This is a vital episode to listen to if you are in any way concerned about the erosion of Christian liberty in the UK and liberty more generally in the Anglosphere. An absolutely vital conversation.

The Church's Response to Roe v. Wade, The WHO Global Pandemic Treaty, Bill Gates New Tome and More!13 May 202201:30:43

In this episode of Irreverend, Church of England vicars Daniel French and Jamie Franklin get together to offer a spiritual perspective on current events, this week taking our Scriptural reflection from 2 Corinthians 5:21: Christ's righteousness given to those who trust in him in exchange for our sinfulness. In current events: we look at different responses to the leaked draft implying that Roe v. Wade will be overturned and discuss the various criticisms that have been levelled at pro-life people and the Christian Church; the Global Pandemic Treaty which has been signed by Prime Minister Boris Johnson and appears to hand a huge amount of sovereign power to the World Health Organisation, whose biggest funder is none other than Bill Gates. Speaking of Gates, he has a new book out in which he recommends that if there is a new pandemic we should do more of the same but only faster and harder. We attempt to give a spiritual perspective on this and more on this week's Irreverend: Faith and Current Affairs!

Experts, Utopia, Globalism and the Kingdom of God - Conversation with Joe Boot06 May 202201:36:44

For this week's episode, Church of England vicar Jamie Franklin was joined by The Rev'd Dr Joseph Boot to talk about issues arising from his new book Ruler of Kings: Towards a Christian Vision of Government . We talked about the cult of the expert, our propensity in the wake of the rejection of a Christian culture to deify the state and to thereby attempt to create a globalist utopian on the earth, and a Christian view of government which includes institutions possessing their own integrity and the right to exist independently of the state. We also spoke about the role of the law of God in society and how we might conceive of a Christian culture that eschews the putative neutrality of the secular realm.

"The Gospel is Divisive" - Special Interview with Calvin Robinson23 Apr 202200:42:41

Until recently journalist and cultural commentator Calvin Robinson was training to be a priest in the Church of England. Although initially the Church of England hierarchy had agreed that Calvin would pursue ordained ministry alongside his public engagement, he was unceremoniously dropped from the training process after two years and told he would not be being ordained. He was told that his opinions were divisive and controversial. Calvin, however, believes that the decision to drop him is reflective of the monochromatic wokeness and social progressivism of the Church of England hierarchy and that he has been cancelled for being an orthodox Christian with politically conservative views. In this special episode, Reverend Daniel French gives Calvin the opportunity to tell the story.

Classic Replay - "We are exiles in this world" w/ Rod Dreher22 Apr 202202:00:44

We're on a post-Easter holiday this week, so journey back in time with us to November last year when we were just beginning our walk through the book of Revelation, Durham Cathedral was closing its doors to the infectious hordes of unvaccinated worshippers and Australia and Austria were attempting to outdo one another in competitive vaccine tyranny. In the second half of the episode, we were privileged to be joined by Rod Dreher who spoke to us about western's cultures significant drift away from Christianity and the implications for soft totalitarian political takeover and technocratic digital control. The answer to all of this? Orthodox Christian of course. Enjoy!

Podcast Extra - The Ideological Challenge of Science07 Apr 202200:33:43

In this special episode, Church of England vicar Jamie Franklin reproduces a talk given recently at an event in Cambridge on "The Ideological Challenge of Science".
In this talk I argue that Western culture is permeated by a naturalistic and mechanistic way of experiencing the world, that this worldview is based on a number of unprovable assumptions and is at base superstitious, that there is an inevitable and disastrous connection between this worldview and our ethical practices, that the Church was complicit in this outlook in its response to Covid-19 and that, in order to restore the Church to faithfulness, we need to find our way back to a supernatural expression of Christian belief and practice.
