Ravers in the Nave08 Dec 202301:33:51

Church of England revs with a difference Daniel French and Jamie Franklin sit down to talk about the most interesting issues in church and state. This time:
- Church of England's Christmas campaign 'Follow the Star' falls flat due to basic typos and theological errors. But what tone could the CofE strike to truly reach the culture?
- Climate Change protestors bravely storm the quire of Chichester Cathedral and interrupt Radio 3 evensong. Is this genuine prophecy or self-important pomposity?
- COP 28 kicks off with 400,000 delegates creating the biggest carbon footprint since the Industrial Revolution began and King Charles making some strange comments about the "indigenous worldview".
- Canterbury Cathedral hosting rave in the nave with obscene lyrics by Eminem is untenable says Gavin Ashenden. His solution? Give the cathedrals back to the Roman Catholic Church!
- And Douglas Murray is indirectly threatened with weird prediction of Islamic gangsters coming to get him.
That and much much more as ever!

Classic Replay: Lord Frost on Covid, Identity Politics, Brexit, Free Speech and More!05 Sep 202502:08:20

If you enjoyed this episode, why not book now to attend the upcoming live interview recording in Winchester with Lord Frost! https://www.eventbrite.com/e/irreverend-live-jamie-franklin-interviews-lord-frost-tickets-1536201733739?aff=oddtdtcreator

Church of England vicars Daniel French, Thomas Pelham and Jamie Franklin are joined by Lord Frost. David Frost had been at the heart of the UK Government and was deeply involved in seminal moments in British history including the Brexit negotiations and the Covid crisis. A deeply principled man, he quit the government over his opposition to further Covid restrictions and said subsequently that he believes that lockdowns are a serious policy error. In this special interview, he addressed in-depth the Covid crisis and the real reasons for the government's response to it, the use of behavioural psychology, the relationship of the government to the UK media, Brexit, the green agenda, free speech and the online harms bill. We also spoke about the Church of England and its failure to take the opportunity to offer hope in the midst of fear. Lord Frost ended this discussion with an exhortation to the Church to remember its true identity and to stop aping secular politicians.
Daniel and Jamie also reflected upon the discussion with Lord Frost and caught up on the notable news for the second week of February 2022: the ending of Covid restrictions in England, the Church of England bishops' plans to alter the nature of the Church by creating bishops for certain issues such as Brexit and Covid, and Justin Welby's comments on the moral imperative to embrace radical collectivism.

Sympathy for the Hamas27 Oct 202301:28:50

For this very special episode, Church of England revs with a difference Thomas Pelham and Jamie Franklin sat down in the same room to catch up on all the talking points in church and state. This time: we review the responses to Hamas' brutal killing of men, women and children on October 7th. The October Declaration says that we should stand by British Jews and condemns antisemitic violence, whilst London's streets are flooded with pro-Palestinian supporters calling for jihad and the cleansing of the land of Israel. Meanwhile, an American poll shows that over half of 16-25 year-olds believe that the October 7th attacks were justified.
In addition, we follow up on the feedback from last week's story about alleged corruption in the highest ranks of the University and Colleges Christian Fellowship (UCCF) and MP Ben Bradshaw seeks to use his political position in order to bring about doctrinal and practical changes in the Church of England's approach to marriage and human sexuality. Will he succeed?

"Please do not do this!" - Trainee Vicars Speak Out20 Oct 202301:36:50

Church of England revs with a difference Daniel French and Jamie Franklin sit down with "orthodox ordinand" Anna Mayo, one of the two leaders of the group of 78 trainee vicars who this week have petitioned the Church of England House of Bishops to desist in their attempts to move the church away from orthodoxy in the areas of marriage and human sexuality. In a wide-ranging conversation, we consider the long-term consequences of the proposed liberalisation of the Church's teaching and practice and we review a recent letter of dissent, signed by twelve bishops, which expresses concern that the proposed course of action is divisive, unorthodox and that it is being pushed through without regard to the obligations of good and proper governance.
After that we select interesting issues from the week: Jamie reviews the unfolding controversy around the University and Colleges Christian Fellowship (UCCF) and Daniel follows up on some Twitter exchanges on Israel that came after the release of the episode last week.

Carnage in Israel13 Oct 202301:42:22

Church of England revs with a difference Daniel French and Jamie Franklin sit down to talk about the big stories in church and state.
Serious geopolitical events are dominating the headlines as Hamas attacks Israel and full-scale war breaks out. We talk about how to orientate ourselves properly to such events from the perspective of Christian discipleship. We also give our view not only on the events themselves but on the disturbing reactions that we are witnessing in Western nations.
Whilst all of this is happening, the Church of England is promoting silent discos and issuing ambiguous statements about the so-called "Prayers of Love and Faith" for the blessing of same-sex couples in churches.
We also review last week's story about the Canadian Parliament's applause for a former member of the SS in light of some correspondence that suggests that there was more to this ostensible mistake than at first might have appeared.

- Canadian Parliament honours Nazi who fought against the Russians in the Second World War.
- Laurence Fox, Dan Wooten and Calvin Robinson are all suspended from GB News as the corporate media attempts to take the channel down.
- Suella Braverman's takes tough stances on immigration and multiculturalism and rebuffs Archbishop of Canterbury's attempt to meet with her to discuss concerns over her "rhetoric".
- And Pope Francis makes some interesting comments about same-sex blessings creating significant levels of confusion.

That All Must Be Decarbonised29 Sep 202301:35:13

Church of England revs with a difference Jamie Franklin and Daniel French sit down to talk about the big stories of the week in church and state.
We revisit the Russell Brand saga with particular reference to Caroline Dinenage MP's attempt to have every major platform demonetise and eject Brand. We get Daniel's take on the whole thing and talk about Brand's idiosyncratic form of New Age religiosity.
After that we talk about men who identify as dogs, Rishi Sunak's decision to water down certain green policies, environmentalist Chris Packham's intention to break certain but unspecified laws and the Bishop of Norwich decision to go full-on green fundamentalist as he declares that "decarbonisation must permeate every aspect of our lives".
We look at a Spectator article delving into the issue of what makes churches grow or shrink (hint: if you like the show, the answer is probably what exactly you think it is) and a halt to the proposed conversation therapy ban.
All that and much more as ever on this week's episode!

Toxic Brand?22 Sep 202301:25:31

Church of England revs with a difference Thomas Pelham and Jamie Franklin sit down to talk about the most pressing issues of the day. This time, we consider the allegations made against the actor and comedian Russell Brand. Are these allegations plausible or are they merely a calculated attack on  Brand by a system that would rather he was discredited and destroyed? We also talked about the implications of the sexual revolution in contrast to the Christian understanding of sex within marriage and the insufficiency of consent as an absolute standard for sexual relationships.
In our new section Peak CofE we review Exeter Cathedral's decision to appoint a "Canon Scientist" to further educate the dean and chapter on the dangers posed by climate change.
And we follow up on the tragic and disturbing story of teenager ST who died of a heart attack last week after being told she could not go to Canada to seek life-saving treatment by the NHS and being deemed of not sufficient mental capacity to make decisions about the end of her own life.

The Repaganization of Britain?15 Sep 202301:34:58

Church of England revs with a difference Thomas Pelham, Jamie Franklin and Daniel French get together to review the week's big talking points.
This time: the shocking case of an anonymous girl in an NHS hospital whose life support is going to be turned off against her wishes, Daniel's piece in The Conservative Woman in which he considers a hypothetical future in which the Archbishop of Canterbury resisted the Covid tyranny, Louise Perry says that we are repaganising but doesn't this mean that we should become Christian again?
That, a few emails and a question the rev about young people and higher education these days plus all the usual banter and extras that are always in there somewhere.

Signs of Hope?08 Sep 202301:38:51

Church of England revs with a difference Daniel French and Jamie Franklin sit down to review the big talking points in Church and culture. This week, we catch up with Daniel's thoughts on the liberalisation of the clergy in the CofE, whilst Jamie comes face-to-face with Antifa at the March for Life. On Twitter, pro-life campaigners are being lambasted by liberal vicars, whereas a Tik Tok video espousing the freedom and joy of not having kids, watching box sets and making shakshuka has gone viral. We also review several encouraging emails that we think show encouraging trends in the culture, particularly among young men who are interested in serious forms of Christianity. And we ask (again!) why the central hierarchies of the churches are ignoring these glorious opportunities.
That, a question on the Sabbath, and much much more as always!

Clergy Crack-Ups01 Sep 202301:32:33

Church of England revs with a difference Thomas Pelham and Jamie Franklin sit down to talk about the recent survey in The Times which appears to show that the majority of clergy in the Church of England favour progressive liberalisation in areas such as gay relationships and women's ordination. More than that it also reveals a picture of a worn-out church that is declining and is staffed by overworked and tired-out priests. We consider this survey in-depth as it touches on a number of themes that have been relevant to this podcast throughout.
A total gear-change for Question the Rev as we answer a query about the nation state of Israel and how it relates to the Christian Church.

The Life of Brain29 Aug 202501:25:56

Church of England revs with a difference Daniel French, Thomas Pelham and Jamie Franklin sit down to talk about the biggest stories in church and state. This time:

  • Creation-tide liturgy approved by the Church of England: but is this simply more climate change propaganda?
  • Classical Christian school King Alfred's forced to close due to Labour's tax raid on private education.
  • Angela Rayner accused of hypocrisy as she purchases second (or third) home in Hove.
  • And CofE Nine O' Clock Service leader Chris Brain convicted of multiple offences as we look back on one of the weirdest chapters in recent Church of England history.

All that, a bit of question the rev and much more as ever.

Skip Church and Pray for the Lionesses25 Aug 202301:08:05

Church of England revs with a difference Thomas Pelham and Jamie Franklin sit down to talk about the major events of this week.
Amongst other things, we discussed the Church's somewhat questionable response to the Sunday scheduling of the Women's World Cup final: Is it really the right message to tell people that it's fine to skip church to watch it? And what are the wider implications of using women's football as a vehicle of social change?
A former scientific advisor to the government says that the falling birth rare in the UK are a good thing. And the revolving door between government and Big Pharma as former government scientific advisor Jonathan Van Tam takes a senior role at Moderna.
That, a Question the Rev on Bible study guides, and emails on an Orthodox perspective on just war and Sainsbury's selling occult magazines.

Regime Change with Prof. Patrick Deneen22 Aug 202301:00:06

Liberalism has failed and its quasi-religious commitments are becoming more and more obvious to those affected by its deficiencies. There may come a time in the near future when liberalism's discontents rise up and demand a truly revolutionary change of regime.
The Rev'd Dr Jamie Franklin sits down with Professor of Political Science at the University of Notre Dame and author of Why Liberalism Failed and the new work Regime Change: Towards a PostLiberal Future Patrick Deneen for a discussion on the failings of liberalism and the prospect of a complete overturning of the liberal order to be replaced by a postliberal regime that orders society according to a common religious vision of the good.
We very much hope you enjoy this most crucial conversation. Full timings of topics discussed are detailed below,

Stained Glass Covid18 Aug 202301:10:06

Church of England revs with a difference Thomas Pelham and Jamie Franklin sit down to talk about the big stories of the week and many other things.
This time: Outraged by the undemocratic ULEZ tax, so called ULEZ "blade-runners" take to the streets to vandalise cameras with tree loppers. We ask if such actions can be justified from a Christian perspective. And a Church in Cambridgeshire has become the first in the UK to depict scenes from the Covid-19 crisis in stained glass. Is this a celebration of the government and church's response to what happened or is there a more nuanced element to it?
In addition, we deal with a Question the Rev on just war provoked by the experience of inter-railing around Europe, discover some new reviews and finally (perhaps) decide upon what our sign-off will be. All that and much much more as ever!

Hancock on the Barbie Bandwagon11 Aug 202301:09:37

The latest episode from CofE revs with a difference Jamie Franklin and Daniel French. It's the Summer and what can that mean but that celebrities and politicians are virtue-signalling about what films they are watching at the cinema? This time it's non other than...Matt Hancock lip-syncing to a song from the new feminist smash-hit Barbie.
In other news, Gary Lineker receives "standing ovation" in Marks & Spencer for his brave political activism and we review an interesting article from the Church Times on the question of "The Church's Core" business.
We also get to a couple of emails: one helping us to understand the true meaning of the "trans" prefix and the other on a case for responsible Christian stewardship of the environment in distinction to the catastrophist climate change hyperbole.

Church of England rev with a difference Jamie Franklin sat down with author Laura Dodsworth to discuss themes arising from her new book Free Your Mind: The New World of Manipulation and How To Resist It.
In a wide-ranging conversation, we spoke about brainwashing by the government and in education, the infantilisation of the UK population during COVID, how fear is used as a tool of control, how to help people wake up, what self-individuation is and how to do it, behavioural psychology and MINDSPACE, the weaponisation of climate change as a means of population management, whether or not brainwashing is a left or a right phenomenon, going to church and whether or not all vicars are agents of manipulation (including me!).

"Your comments will not stand!" with debanked vicar Richard Fothergill04 Aug 202301:39:31

Special guest the Rev'd Richard Fothergill joined revs with a difference Jamie Franklin and Daniel French for the second half of this episode to discuss his recent experience of being debanked by the Yorkshire Building Society for his shockingly prejudicial comments about transgenderism. But our conversation was more wide-ranging, taking in Richard's experience in starting the international movement which goes by the name of The Filling Station (https://thefillingstation.org/) in response to the weakness of many local churches and the general spiritual darkness of the surrounding culture.
In the first half of the episode, Daniel and Jamie discussed Psalm 2 and the nations raging against Christ, the Costa Coffee transgenderism debacle and the spiritual implications of the outrageous level of inheritance tax that we are forced to pay in this country. We also covered a Question the Rev on the legitimacy or not of the NRSV translation of Scripture.

Revs with a difference Tom Pelham and Jamie Franklin are back bringing up all the big stories. Today, talking about "faith leaders", including Rowan Williams, backing Sadiq Khan's ULEZ tax raid on car owners, the Church of England's questionable ethical policy around financial investment, particularly concerning the areas of pornography, guns and stem-cell research, and a reverend is debanked: could we be next?

Is Pride a Sin? 21 Jul 202301:44:03

Rev with a difference Jamie Franklin sits down to review the most pressing issues in church and society. This week:
- Net Zero mania in the CofE as affirmation of environmental activism is added to confirmation ritual.
- CofE spokesman defends teaching of critical race theory in CofE school classrooms.
- Tory councillor King Lawal is cancelled for saying on Twitter that pride is a sin.
- Pro-life activists say they were banned from worshipping at York Minster.
- Controversy as friends of Mike Pilavachi tweet in his support.
That and a couple of Question the Revs with questions about Holy Communion and baptism. Our Scripture this week is Romans 8:9-22.

Is God the "Father" Sexist?14 Jul 202301:27:04

Join CofE revs with a difference Jamie, Tom and Daniel for a discussion of all the recent news in Church and society. This week:
- Was the Archbishop of York right to describe language about God being a father as "problematic" and "patriarchal"?
- The Archbishop of Canterbury says that universities should have their funding cut if "trans" people are insulted.
- Westminster Abbey holds a service of worship in praise of the NHS on its 75th anniversary.
- And the Creed is rewritten by an American Church so that it sounds somewhat more progressive. Hear the revs reaction to "The Sparkle Creed".
In broader news, the revs respond to recent developments around the Covid enquiry and Matt Hancock's claim that there should have been harder and better lockdowns and to the recent unorthodox winner of Miss Netherlands.
Question the Rev is about the Devil's motivation in tempting Jesus. An email of the week concerns a listener's disciplinary process at work for posting ostensibly discriminatory things on social media. And there is much much more as always!

- English cricket is condemned as bastion of racism and discrimination.
- An apparent coup in Russia fizzles out before it has begun.
- The Titan submarine implodes in its bid to explore the remains of the Titanic.
- Robert F Kennedy speaks to Joe Rogan and appears to be winning the political argument in the US.
- An encouraging email of the week and a surprising attempt on the part of Tom to defend the Archbishop of Canterbury from a listener's criticism.

Repentance Required06 Jun 202301:16:20

Church of England vicars with a difference Thomas Pelham and Jamie Franklin sit down to give a spiritual perspective on the big events of the day. This week, after an absence on the show, Tom gives his own inimitable take on the coronation of King Charles III, we review a Daily Telegraph headline article that tells us that the lockdowns were an enormous, disastrous mistake (about three years too late), and we talk about Laura Dodsworth's recent Substack article in which she shares her desire to go back to church but finds difficulty with the wokeness and lack of spirituality on display in local CofE outlets. We ask why the Church of England hierarchy continues to promote the alternative green religion of Net Zero and engages so little with traditional Christian themes of sin, repentance, forgiveness and eternal life. Maybe it's time for us to try a different approach?
Question the Rev asks us to consider the significance of a pride flag on the set of The Chosen and a fourteen year-old convert sends us an email to ask for advice about growing in the faith in the midst of a hostile world. That and much more as always!

Natcon, Satanism and the BBC26 May 202301:48:02

Church of England vicars with a difference, Jamie Franklin and Daniel French, are back giving a spiritual perspective on the events of our age.
Daniel's been at the National Conservatism conference, which, according to the corporate media, is a far-right fascist convention. Was Daniel goose-stepping from seminar-to-seminar or was the reality a far more prosaic affair? We review some of the online hate, including Matt Hancock's physical discomfort at being exposed to a mildly conservative take on the purpose of marriage.
We also spoke about the BBC's decision to go full-on Satanist and write a lengthy article in praise of the cult of the Dark Lord. We talked at length about the dangers of engaging in Satan worship and the diabolical practices attended to it and why saying that you don't believe in Satan doesn't make it any better.
We answer an email from an adult convert seeking advice on how to prepare for confirmation and talk about much much more besides in this weeks' episode!

Coronation Malarkey12 May 202301:42:09

Church of England revs with a difference Jamie Franklin and Daniel French sit down to talk about the week's top stories. This time:

- David Starkey once again courts controversy by saying that Prime Minister is "not properly grounded in our culture".
- Fraser Myers and Andrew Bridgen face off on GB News over the safe and effective treatment and related issues. Who won the debate?

Is the Countryside Racist?05 May 202301:36:52

Church of England vicars Jamie Franklin, Thomas Pelham and Daniel French get together to talk about the big stories in culture and the church:
- Is nature racist? We give a comprehensive answer to this perennial question as Black2Nature seek to "take back" the countryside.
- It's been 55 years since the abortion act and over 10,000,000 abortions have been carried out in the United Kingdom since then.
- Women's cycling is the latest sport to be ruined by transgender ideology as Austin Killips wins the Tour of the Gila.
- The Church of England families report says that all families must be supported regardless of their makeup and that single people should be supported as well. So that's everyone then?
- Evangelical superstar vicar Mike Pilavachi is accused of inappropriate and damaging behaviour by a number of young men.
That, an email about how we should disagree with each other more, and many other things besides!

Revenge of the Establishment28 Apr 202301:33:03

Church of England vicars Tom Pelham and Jamie Franklin get together to discuss this week's topic stories and talking points:
- Should there be ducks in baptismal fonts? You decide.
- Revenge of the Cathedral as Tucker Carlson is out at Fox News.
- Diane Abbott seems to have the lost the plot in racism gaffe debacle. Is she the victim of a cancel culture that she has helped to flourish in these days?
- GAFCON, an organisation representing 85% of the world's Anglicans, have met and decided to formally reject the leadership of the Archbishop of Canterbury over his support of gay blessings. We discuss.

Orange Insanity21 Apr 202301:37:23

Church of England revs with a difference Jamie Franklin and Daniel French get together to talk about the big and often disturbing stories of the day from a spiritual perspective. This week:
- Just Stop Oil protestor resembles religious fanatic as snooker championship is well and truly interrupted by orange paint.
- Green activist takes his own life because he felt so depressed and hopeless about the apocalypse constantly predicted in climate change narrative.
- The government plans to use your mobile phone to frighten and control you: are you ready for them to interrupt St George's Day by issuing a test alert?
- Junior doctors walk out on their patients demanding a 35% pay increase, whilst co-chair of the BMA goes on holiday.
That, some thoughts about the Archbishop of Canterbury's Easter sermon in which he couldn't help but mention the Church's £100 million woke reparation fund for historic ties to slavery, your questions answered in Question the Rev and much much more.

Feminism Against Progress with Mary Harrington14 Apr 202301:17:32

Church of England rev Jamie Franklin sits down with author and public intellectual Mary Harrington to talk about Mary's new book Feminism Against Progress. Describing herself as a "reactionary feminist" Mary argues that the the direction feminism has taken in more recent years has benefitted nobody except a small group of elite women and that we need to recover the concept of interdependence between men and women. She is a subtle yet outspoken critic of post-humanist thought and the application of the concept of freedom to the human body both in terms of the denial of sex differences and in the reconstruction of the human body along the lines suggested by transgender ideologues.
In a wide-ranging conversation, we spoke about the reality of hierarchy and power and how these can be turned for good, the difference between a feminism of freedom and a feminism of interdependence, how we can reconceive the concept of freedom in the context of marriage and family life, the role that Christianity can play in such a reconception, feminism after liberalism, the place of men and the danger of post-Christian patriarchy, internet mentorship and real world relationships, and the question of abortion for reactionary feminism.

Inclusive Language for Vicars24 Mar 202301:33:06

Church of England revs Jamie Franklin and Daniel French get together to put things to rights, talking all the big themes of the week. This time:
 - We ask "Is Daniel as inclusive as the Oxfam Inclusive Language guide?" (Spoiler: he's definitely not)
- MP Ben Bradshaw attempts a parliamentary takeover of the Church of England by forcing a change in the doctrine of marriage through political means.
- German Roman Catholic bishops go rogue and announce full gay marriage come what may from the Vatican.
- In other Vatican news, the universalistic Abrahamic Family House has now opened in the UAE. Fully endorsed by Pope Francis who apparently signed a document saying that the existence of other religions is an expression of the will of God.
- Dutch farmers trash WEF stooge Mark Rutte in shock election result.
- Christian lecturer sacked by Methodist theological college for "homosexuality is invading the church" tweet.
- Email of the Week which details persecution of Ukrainian Orthodox Church by Ukrainian government.
And, after Daniel had to go, Jamie goes on a lengthy peroration about the importance of taking responsibility for your actions, inspired by his take on the manager of Tottenham Hotspur's behaviour this week.
