H A P P Y  I N X S  D A Y!       H A P P Y   B I R T H D A Y   T I M!

In todays “feature episode” we celebrate the important milestone that is INXS’ 47th birthday and as such, Bee and I countdown the most pivotal 47 moments, achievements and accomplishments since 1977; with a heavy emphasis on songs, albums, video clips, awards and live gigs, amidst other memorable successes.

Counting down from 47 to 1, mone and Bee's list's  contrasted heavily in the beginning, phases with a mutual appreciation society naturally occurring as we approached the top 5 pivotal moments and successes.

So as we come off last week’s episode whereby we acknowledged the birthdays of Jon and Tim Farriss, we aim to not “bore you and get to the chorus” by booting our news, fan engagement and wrap sections to the kerb by getting straight into our list with passion, purpose and pace!

We also, look forward to having 5 patrons join us next episode to extend the INXS birthday acknowledgments, either their very own pivotal moments and INXS successes, that resonated with them.

Releasing this episode on our 4th Anniversary; we are beyond excited to have a special and featured guest on today’s episode of INXS: Access all Areas. Jon Lamoreaux from The Hustle Podcast, based in Denver Colorado has created over 470 episodes of fantastic music deep dive content over the last 9 years to critical acclaim.

The original driving inspiration behind Haydn creating this INXS podcast with Bee, Jon’s musical passion, love of Australian/New Zealand artists and fantastic dulcet tones has resulted in nearly a million downloads since its inception creating hours upon hours of interesting content that has brought listening pleasure to thousands.

Today we join forces to discuss the DNA of the Australasian music scene and how a band like INXS were able to take the mantle from iconic “live acts” that preceded them such as The Angels, AC/DC, Cold Chisel, Dragon, Midnight Oil and Split Enz to name just a few. What was this notion called “grit” that permeated all of these acts to perform to such truly high levels and meant the public/concert goers were given blistering, raw and pulsating performances up close and personal every time.

We talk about INXS’ place in history, their Rock n Roll Hall of Fame prospects plus what musically they meant to an ardent fan such as Jon. Filled with fantastic anecdotes, references, opinions and passion, this unique episode is one we are proud to share with you and trust you’ll love it as much as we do.

From the outset, big thanks to all of the well-wishers who made episode 100 such a beautiful experience for Bee, the team, and me. Today, we are fortunate to delve deeper with the inimitable Darren Jones, whose access, anecdotes, and involvement with INXS have few peers. 

 

We get to hear about Garry Gary Beers’ fantastic Mangrove Studios which was state-of-the-art for its time and gave back to the Australian musicians such as Silverchair, Courtney Barnett, and Sarah Blasko. Darren also shares a rare moment in Adelaide when Andrew Farriss allegedly “lost the plot” with rare anger on display.

Bee and I proudly celebrate episode 100 of INXS: Access All Areas with an episode jam-packed with familiar voices expressing their heartfelt thanks and thoughts amidst a cavalcade of anecdotes. We especially deep dive with one of INXS’ true heroes, Darren Jones, who was a true pioneer in the website space in the late 1990s, collating and distributing news and content at a global level.  

Destined to be a future honorary patron, Darren has generously donated rare content such as the Dekadance material for our competitions. He also opens up in detail but with total respect about his dealings and friendships with each band member, particularly during the period after Michael’s passing,  when the band’s direction was cloudy.

   

With marvelous production and archival audio by my Co-host Bee, this episode’s two weeks of planning and recording promises to be a “do not miss a moment” as we pay tribute with a modern-day perspective to what is great and fantastic about INXS.

Episode 99: O Canada INXS Love   Much like Australia, Canada is a country of true beauty and vast landscapes. Similar to INXS’ homeland, Canada was and still is a marketplace where rabid support and loyalty to the INXS catalogue remains to this day.   

In episode 99, INXS: Access All Areas pays tribute to both band and Canadian fans for their mutual love for one another as myself and Bee, dive deep into all successes and experiences that created such joint love. Singles chart success, touring, recording and interviews are all discussed and acknowledged with thoroughness and thought. 

 

Canada may have been a slightly slower burn initially for INXS, but it’s the country where the band has had their highest amount of number one singles even exceeding their homeland. 

 

Additionally, from Vancouver to Quebec and everything in between, INXS constantly toured and supported the rabid fans' thirst for live concert touring with loyalty and gusto. 

 

So, as we prepare for Episode 100 next week, narrow your focus to this special episode that’s also dedicated to our Podcast patrons from Canada, namely Vern, Jamie, Geneviève, Heidi, Sandrine, Maïté, and Leon.

    It’s with a heavy heart that the world mourns the loss of Australia’s answer to Michael Jordan or Babe Ruth. Cricketer Shane Keith Warne (passed away on Friday, March 4th from a sudden heart attack at the age of only 52 in Thailand where he was holidaying at the time).    With 708 wickets in the difficult art of leg-spin bowling, Shane managed to make the long-forgotten art of leg-spin bowling sexy again... so much so that Elton John and Mick Jagger wanted to be him and Ed Sheeran, Roger Federer, Tiger Woods and Coldplay’s Chris Martin adored his skill and friendship.    Bold, brash, and proudly bogan (Google it), Shane lived a colorful life on and off the field, where he regularly mixed with the “big end of town and celebrities”. His love and respect for INXS and Michael Hutchence was well known and they mixed regularly when both the band and team were touring in the same city.    So, for the portion of Access All Areas of fans unfamiliar with him (particularly North America), we pay tribute in song with INXS tracks that serve as a soundtrack to his life and the perennial love we have for him in our hearts!    This episode also features an interview with Tim Farriss, paying his tribute to Shane.   R.I.P Shane. With the final INXS track in Song Week upon us, we culminate with Never Tear Us Apart, a track that has grown from a beautiful ballad to truly iconic status. Ensuring a fourth consecutive top 10 from album KICK, Never Tear Us Apart is an alternative sounding Fats Domino-inspired waltz transformed into a beautiful, lush orchestral masterpiece.

 

Soaring the charts globally, this ballad never wastes a note, lyric, or moment, and still, 35 years later produces spine tingles and heart flutters. Whether it’s Michael’s evocative lyrics and vocals or the sublime instrumentation by the band, this song truly comes to life in the city of Prague with Richard Lowenstein’s award-winning video.

 

Covered by numerous artists since its release including Joe Cocker, Tom Jones, Natalie Imbruglia, and The Teskey Brothers, N.T.U.A. has transcended its origins with it now being the match day theme song for Port Adelaide Football Club, Michael’s funeral song, and the titular name of the band’s award-winning miniseries in 2014.

Episode 96: INXS Song Deep Dive: Need You Tonight   The crowning Billboard chart performance of INXS’ career stateside, Need You Tonight in January 1988 soared to the top of the charts. The lead single off the album KICK, with this song the pressure and eyes of the world were waiting to see what INXS would come up with.   INXS was not to be outdone and not to disappoint. Need you Tonight captivated the ears, eyes and dance floors around the globe with its sexy and sensual vocals and instrumentation proving an irresistible impulse.   With another groundbreaking video clip by Richard Lowenstein somewhat inspired by the staggering 3D album artwork by Nick Egan, fans truly experienced “an all sum of its parts” moment in time where INXS infiltrated the cultural zeitgeist.   Covered many times over the last 35 years by artists as diverse as Justin Timberlake, Bonnie Raitt, Liv Tyler and Dua Lipa, Need you Tonight’s greatness is stamped in history as a true pivotal INXS moment.   Enjoy! Well, folks, we are up and running in “Song Week” as we deep dive into the third groundbreaking and pivotal song that proved to be a shapeshifter for INXS. Today it’s 1985’s “What you Need” from the album Listen like Thieves.   A song that nearly never came to fruition if not for both Chris Thomas’ insistent ask for “one more song” with the hit-making scope and the band’s preparedness to polish up an old demo. With little time, Michael and Andrew came up with the lyrics, the band rehearsed and recorded, then it was added to the final pressed disc/album—all in 48 hours!   Talk about pressure! Hitting number 2 in Australia on its debut week, What You Need was surprisingly released as the second single in the USA, where it climbed to number 5 on the Billboard Charts.
